President Donald Trump arrives to speak at a campaign rally in, Lexington, Ky., Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Photo: Susan Walsh, APLEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump's rally in Kentucky (all times local): 8 p.m. President Donald Trump is praising an ally's call to unmask the intelligence community whistleblower whose complaint served as the catalyst for Democrats' impeachment probe. Speaking at a rally in Kentucky Monday, Trump says GOP Sen. Rand Paul's call for the whistleblower to be publicly named was "excellent." Paul claimed at the rally that the whistleblower's identity is known, adding, "I say to the media, do your job and print his name." U.S. whistleblower laws exist to protect the identities and careers of people who bring forward accusations of wrongdoing by government officials. Lawmakers in both parties have historically backed those protections __ 7:55 p.m. President Donald Trump is calling incumbent Gov. Matt Bevin a "pain" on the eve of Tuesday's Kentucky gubernatorial election, but he says he means it in the nicest way. Addressing a campaign rally Monday in Lexington, Kentucky, Trump said Bevin has frequently prodded him to help court businesses to relocate in his state and bring federal dollars to the state. Trump says, "He's such a pain in the ass, but that's what you want." The Republican Bevin is facing Democratic state Attorney General Andy Beshear in Tuesday's election. The bitter Kentucky contest is being watched closely for early signs of how the increasingly partisan impeachment furor in Washington might affect Trump and other Republican incumbents in 2020. ___ 6:55 p.m. Republican Gov. Matt Bevin gets to bask in the campaign finale he wanted — an election-eve appearance with President Donald Trump just hours before Kentucky voters choose between him and Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear. The Monday evening rally at Rupp Arena in Lexington will reinforce one of Bevin's main themes throughout the bitter gubernatorial campaign — his alliance with Trump, whose popularity eclipses the governor's in the Bluegrass State. Trump tweeted support for Bevin on Monday morning, saying he "has worked really hard & done a GREAT job." Thousands of people, many wearing Trump shirts and hats, gathered inside Rupp Arena hours before the rally. Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:35 PM PST SPRINGFIELD - Making just their third state appearance ever, the Lakota West High School girls soccer team sent chilly Firebird fans home happy from Springfield Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Dublin Coffman in a Division I girls soccer semifinal. Kailyn Dudukovich's second goal of the night was a quick response to the opposing Rocks whose fans were still celebrating a game-tying goal just a few minutes earlier. It was her 48th goal of the season, more than three times as many as most of the Greater Miami Conference top scorers. "It was a great battle, exciting, and I'm just so proud of this team coming as far as we can," Dudukovich said. "We're just enjoying this win. State finals? It's the first time in 20 years." Head coach Brigit Reder, a former Firebird soccer and basketball player, received a congratulatory hug from Lakota West principal Elgin Card and was all smiles. She said she had no doubt they would win. [Support high school sports coverage with a digital subscription: $5 for 3 months] "I feel confident in the girls," Reder said. "We put them in high-intensity environments in training. They've seen games where they've either had to battle back or hold on to a win or gain a win back. They kept their composure, they took care of business and that's what I would expect." Dublin Coffman came in not having lost since early in the season when they fell 1-0 to Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit. With just under 27 minutes left in the first half, Lakota West scored just the third goal on the Rocks in six postseason games when Ohio State commits Sydney Jones and Dudukovich teamed up on a corner kick the GMC scoring leader Dudukovich deposited into the net. That would be the only goal of the half. Coffman had not been shut out since their opening two games of the season. Even though keeper Maddie Prohaska was a thorn in their side most of the game, they finally connected with 14:17 remaining when captain Emma Bartrhel scored off a corner. However, Lakota West has scored a minimum of two goals each game this fall. A little more than three minutes later, Dudukovich struck again with a center ball that Claudia Gibson hit off the crossbar. Dudukovich was there for the follow and the 2-1 lead. A third goal was called back on an offsides call, but it didn't matter. At triple zeroes, the Firebirds were state championship-bound. "We knew we had to get another one and losing just wasn't an option for us," Dudukovich said of the game-winning goal. "Claudia had a great shot and I just followed it up." Like their neighbors at Lakota East, whose boys team plays Wednesday in the state semifinals, a certain Prince song will likely play among Lakota West fans as they haven't made it to the state finals since 1999 when they won it all. Prior to that, they appeared in 1994. "It's cool," Reder said. "We get a chance to do this again 20 years later." This season under Reder, the Firebirds have been infused with a trio of Division I commits who missed their sophomore seasons playing for the Cincinnati Development Academy. They will return to their club team when this season is finished. Ohio State recruits Dudukovich and Jones and Auburn commit Prohaska have led Lakota West to an undefeated year with just two ties (New Albany and Fairfield). Prohaska nearly had her ninth shutout of the season and had several saves that sent Dublin Coffman's fans into convulsions. "That just shows what kind of team we are when we come back and we score again," Prohaska said. "That just shows the grit, the grind, just kind of how the season's gone altogether. I'm just really proud of how everyone worked from the backline to the forwards, even the bench. Everyone that didn't get to play tonight, they were there 100%." The 21-0-2 Firebirds advance to Saturday's state final at MAPFRE Stadium against Anthony Wayne at 7 p.m. Anthony Wayne is also undefeated and beat Medina in Sandusky 1-0. "At this point, only one team comes out of the state undefeated," Dudukovich said. "We're excited about this win and ready to get going on Saturday." Election results: Mississippi, Kentucky, New York City, Virginia | November 2019 elections - Vox.com Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:24 PM PST ![]() Voters in several states are headed to the polls on Tuesday, November 5, to cast votes in elections that could lead to major shifts in power. In both Mississippi's and Kentucky's gubernatorial races, Democrats have the potential to retake the governor's seats, and in Virginia, Democrats could flip the House and Senate. In Kentucky, the governor's race is being cast as a referendum on President Donald Trump; can a Democrat win in a deep-red state one year from a presidential election? And in Mississippi, Attorney General Jim Hood has a good shot at becoming the state's first Democratic governor in 16 years — as long as a Jim Crow-era electoral system doesn't get in his way. Virginia will test whether Republicans can hang onto power in a state that's been trending blue for years. No Republican has won statewide office since 2009, yet they've clung to slim majorities in both chambers of the state assembly. In New York City, residents will vote on whether to double the number of Americans who use a different system — ranked-choice voting — to elect officials. If passed in New York City, it would be a tremendous lift for a growing electoral reform movement that includes Maine; Sante Fe, New Mexico; Oakland, California; and Memphis, Tennessee. The races and questions on ballots this year have the potential to serve as bellwether elections that could indicate how much momentum Democrats have managed to keep since the midterms in 2018, and offer a glimpse of what to expect from the party's performance in 2020. Trump makes pitch for Bevin in Rupp Arena rally - Hoptown Chronicle Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:14 PM PST President Donald Trump lent a hand to Gov. Matt Bevin's reelection effort on Monday, headlining a rally in Lexington hours before Kentuckians head to the polls to weigh in on whether to keep Bevin for another four years. ![]() At the rally, Trump teased Bevin, telling the audience that the Kentucky governor is a "pain" because he is frequently asking the federal government for aid. "I say 'Matt, do I have to do it? Please, please.' But isn't that what you want in a governor? That's what you want," Trump said. "He's such a pain in the ass, but that's what you want." Trump spoke for more than an hour to a packed crowd at Rupp Arena in Lexington and was joined by both of Kentucky's U.S. senators and all five of the state's Republican congressmen. Trump painted Democrats in dark terms, saying they want to "erase our traditions, our culture, our history and our heroes" and claiming the party wants to abolish the Second Amendment. "They want to subjugate you and break you to their will. But Kentucky will never be broken, Kentucky can't be broken. You're too strong and you're too smart," Trump said. Trump stuck to national issues for much of his speech, railing against congressional Democrats for launching an impeachment inquiry into his behavior with the Ukrainian president and making fun of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Trump encouraged Kentuckians to vote, saying if Republicans lose "it sends a bad message." "Here's the story, if you win, they're going to be like 'ho-hum' and if you lose, they're going to say Trump suffered the greatest defeat in the history of the world," Trump said. "You can't let that happen to me." The rally continued Bevin's campaign strategy of tying himself to Trump's popularity in Kentucky after being tagged as one of the most unpopular governors in the country in polls. Bevin spoke nearly two hours before Trump arrived at Rupp Arena, telling the crowd to fight against "evil knocking at the door in this world and in America." "Are we going to let people like Nancy Pelosi and the squad to impeach this president and make a mockery of the political process?" Bevin said. Bevin has been joined by a handful of Trump administration officials and surrogates during his campaign over the past month, including Vice President Mike Pence, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Bevin has developed a bitter rivalry with his opponent in this year's race, Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear. Beshear has used his office to file several lawsuits against Bevin over his use of executive authority, a pension reform bill and an investigation into teachers who called in sick to protest his policies. Republican candidate for Attorney General Daniel Cameron also spoke, encouraging the crowd to boo reporters covering the event. "The liberals who run the newspapers and the Democratic Party in this state cannot stand to see a conservative African American on this stage tonight," Cameron said. Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday. For more information about what's on your ballot, check out our comprehensive voter guide. Kentucky governor election results: Democrat Andy Beshear defeats Republican Matt Bevin - Vox.com Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:04 PM PST ![]() Democrat Andy Beshear has won the Kentucky governor's race, ousting sitting Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, and giving Democrats a big win in a conservative state. It's a major loss for Republicans in a state where they hold supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature, both US Senate seats, and five out of the state's six House seats. Bevin pulled out all the stops to clinch a win; President Donald Trump rallied in Lexington, Kentucky, Monday night ahead of the election to turn out voters. But even that last-ditch effort wasn't enough — a sign that Trump's influence isn't omnipotent. At the end of the day, in the eyes of Kentuckians, Bevin remained an extremely unpopular governor. He threatened to cut Medicaid expansion in the state, which would have likely pushed about 400,000 people off their health insurance. And his time in office was met with statewide protests by Kentucky teachers, after he pushed to cut pensions. Bevin called teachers "ignorant" and "selfish," and said kids were likely exposed to sexual assault because teachers were protesting instead of staying in the classrooms. He eventually apologized for the comment, but not without saying teachers were acting like "thugs." Beshear won on a campaign focused on statewide issues around health care and education. He promised teachers raises and new funding streams for the pension system. He has said he is pro-choice, will protect Medicaid, pushing back against Bevin's proposed Medicaid work requirements. Bevin's defenders say he became a political casualty after attempting to take on some of Kentucky's most pressing and politically difficult issues, like the pension system that has accumulated $43 billion in debt since 2000. But the reality is many Kentuckians instead saw a leader attacking some of the most vulnerable in the state. And Bevin's effort to make the race about Trump — who remains in Kentuckians' good graces — could not mask years of controversial conservative policies. The Beshear win is big for Democrats. But Democratic and Republican strategists alike warn against extrapolating much further. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell may be up for reelection in 2020, but that race is entirely separate from the governor's race Democrats just won. "It certainly doesn't hurt to have party infrastructure going into a federal election cycle, but that race is going to be that race," Matt Erwin, a Kentucky Democratic strategist, said. Kentucky has had a strong history with Democratic governors (one Beshear is actually a part of; his father Steve Beshear was a two-term governor during the Barack Obama years, and expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act). But federally, Kentucky is conservative — and Trumpian. Trump won the state by a whopping 30 points, and his popularity in Kentucky has remained consistently high. While McConnell is unpopular, he's still the clear favorite to win. "Even if you don't love McConnell, he's still a Republican and a very powerful Republican at that," Jessica Taylor, with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, told Vox ahead of the election. Scott Jennings, a Republican strategist and pundit in the state, said while it's "enormously frustrating to lose the governor," Republicans know that this isn't the worst-case scenario for them. "The Republicans have proven we can win and hold federal offices and win and hold the state legislature," Jennings said, noting that the state's legislature is very powerful and that Republicans hold the majority in both chambers. Chelsea and Ajax serve up eight-goal Champions League thriller - CNN International Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:59 PM PST Many were expecting Chelsea and Ajax, two of this season's most exciting young teams in Europe, to serve up a treat at Stamford Bridge, but none would have predicted quite how crazy it would become. Both sides traded what they must have thought were knockout blows throughout the tie, only for the other to haul itself off the canvas -- for Ajax, it came with a helping hand from VAR. When the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the game with the scores tied at 4-4, you were left wondering how it wasn't more. Last season, the Champions League bore witness to some stunning comebacks; Liverpool's famous Anfield turnaround against Barcelona and Tottenham's Houdini act away to Ajax to name the two most memorable. Chelsea's this evening set an early marker for this season that will surely be hard to top. The first half was eventful enough -- in fact, make that the opening four minutes. After Quincy Promes' free-kick was inadvertently diverted into his own goal by Tammy Abraham, Jorginho equalized from the penalty spot just 67 seconds later after Christian Pulisic was clumsily taken down. Before Chelsea had a chance to breathe, Ajax was suddenly 3-1 up. Hakim Ziyech, a silky player many expected to leave Ajax in the summer, was instrumental to both the second and third goals. The first came as Promes nodded home from Ziyech's sublime cross and the second was something of a freak goal. The Moroccan's whipped free-kick cannoned off the far post and hit Kepa Arrizabalaga square in the face before going over the line. When Donny van de Beek put Ajax 4-1 up after an hour Stamford Bridge was almost completely silent. Ajax supporters had been denied tickets to this match by UEFA following crowd trouble during the Dutch club's recent trip to Valencia, and so the corner of this stadium usually reserved for some of Europe's most raucous fans was empty. Those Ajax fans watching on television back in the Netherlands must have been agog as the match descended into brilliant chaos and became one the all-time great Champions League clashes. Just after the hour mark, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta snuck in at the far post to get the faintest of touches onto Tammy Abraham's wayward shot and spark hope of a revival. Eight minutes later, Jorginho scored his second penalty of the match -- but not before referee Gianluca Rocchi took center stage. The Italian official first sent off Daley Blind -- a deserved second yellow for a wild lunge -- then awarded Chelsea a penalty for a handball by Joel Veltman. The decision seemed harsh enough, with the ball taking a huge deflection before hitting Veltman's arm, but Rocchi then proceeded to send the Dutchman off for the perceived infraction. After Jorginho's successful penalty made it 4-3, that left Ajax with 20 minutes to hold for the win with just nine men and neither of its central defenders. It managed to hold on for just another four minutes, as Reece James reacted first after Kurt Zouma's header came off the crossbar, drilling a low shot into the far corner. That goal sparked wild scenes in every corner of Stamford Bridge -- bar the empty one without any Ajax fans -- and there were still 15 minutes left for Chelsea to find a winner that just 10 minutes ago seemed so improbable. Azpilicueta thought he had made himself the unlikeliest of heroes when he hammered home a fantastic half-volley, but it would be VAR that would have the last laugh in west London as Abraham was ruled to have handled in the buildup. Both sides went in search of a late winner and both goalkeepers made fantastic saves to keep the scores level; Andre Onana's stop from Michy Batshuayi was particularly brilliant. Despite being down to nine men, Ajax still pressed and a winner for the Dutch side would have been fitting for such a madcap game. Remarkably, the visitor came desperately close to pulling off an unlikely victory when Kepa saved superbly from Lisandro Martínez. Did Actress Dawn Wells Make Millions from 'Gilligan's Island'? - Snopes.com Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:44 PM PST We now accept as commonplace the notion that actors in popular television shows are set for life financially, as we read about how cast members in hit shows such as "Friends," "Seinfeld," and "The Big Bang Theory" not only were paid upwards of $1 million per episode during those series' initial runs, but then earned millions of dollars more in residuals and royalties from syndication deals, DVD sales, and video streaming. That wasn't always the case, however. The actors from television shows of decades past — shows whose episodes have been continuously rerun countless thousands of times all over the world and are touchstones of popular culture — did not reap any such bounty. Those cast members were typically paid salaries that ranged from modest to pretty good, and they may have received additional payments for the first few airings of episodes in which they appeared, but that was it — they collected little or no residuals when their shows were sold into syndication, and no royalties from a home video market that didn't yet exist. As Eve Plumb, who portrayed Jan Brady on the 1970s sitcom "The Brady Bunch," revealed in 2011: "The biggest misconception is that we're all rich from it, but we are not. We have not been paid for reruns of the show for many, many years. We are not making money off of it at all." The one notable exception to this circumstance, according to legend, is actress Dawn Wells, who played the character of Mary Ann Summers in the 1960s sitcom "Gilligan's Island." Numerous websites such as Mental Floss have offered versions of the following tale about how Wells supposedly parlayed her three seasons on the show into a lifetime of paychecks:
This narrative seems quite improbable on its face. Actors are generally represented by a bevy of various unions, guilds, agents, and lawyers, and the idea that only one person in the whole television industry possessed the savvy to recognize that a contractual entitlement to residuals was a potentially lucrative reward worth pursuing strains credulity. Moreover, the goal of most television producers in that era was to keep their shows going long enough (generally three years) to amass a sufficient number of episodes for syndication deals after those series ended their original network runs, as the syndication market provided the bulk of potential profits. While producers may not have expected their shows to still be airing "40 years later," they certainly hoped their series would enjoy long TV afterlives, and they would not be keen on sharing those revenues with actors who had little bargaining power (nor would they want to set a precedent for other actors to follow). A minor actor in a secondary role who dared to press for a contractual guarantee to perpetual royalties likely would have been curtly informed how quickly and easily she could be replaced. We don't need to speculate on the state of 1960s television to know the answer here, though, because Wells herself has repeatedly stated that this legend is false. In 2014, for example, Wells said during an interview that she was paid a salary roughly equivalent to $50,000 in today's dollars and "never received any residuals":
And in a 2016 interview, she answered the question, "What's one big myth about [Gilligan's Island]?" by asserting that the actors "didn't really get a dime" in residuals:
A 2014 Washington Post obituary of Wells' cast mate Russell Johnson, who played the Professor, also observed that Johnson "resented … that he and other cast members were left out of the bulk of the syndication profits." For what it's worth, the daughter of "Gilligan's Island" creator Sherwood Schwartz disputed the oft-repeated claim that her father realized as much as $90 million from the series:

Virginia's legislative elections a test of anti-Trump fervor - Manistee News Advocate Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:44 PM PST

Photo: Steve Helber, APRICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Democrats gained control of the state Senate on Tuesday, but control of the House was still unknown as officials continued to count votes in key races. The race became an intense slugfest between Republicans and Democrats that tested how voters feel about President Donald Trump and his possible impeachment. Of the four states with legislative elections this year, Virginia is the only one where control of the statehouse was up for grabs. Before the election, Republicans held a slim majority in both chambers, which they have controlled since 2014. Outside groups and political parties test-drove expensive campaigns to win over and motivate voters in a state that was until recently considered a presidential battleground. Groups backed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg alone spent several million dollars. Trump's election three years ago has been largely disastrous for Virginia Republicans in the past two election cycles. Democrats have won every statewide contest, made historic gains in the House of Delegates and picked up three additional congressional seats. Democrats were hoping to take control of the state legislature for the first time in more than two decades and send a message about Trump's unpopularity ahead of next year's presidential contest. T-Mobile catches fire for alleged ring tone scheme - FierceWireless Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:39 PM PST ![]() Local exchange carriers (LECs) have filed a class action lawsuit against T-Mobile related to the carrier's previous practice of inserting false ring tones in certain calls that were placed but not completed to consumers in rural areas. T-Mobile in 2018 agreed to pay a $40 million fine as part of a settlement with the FCC after complaints prompted an investigation that found a pattern of continued issues delivering calls to rural areas, as well as the carrier's practice of injecting false ring tones into "hundreds of millions of calls." However, the proposed class action lawsuit (PDF), filed Friday in an Illinois federal court by Indiana-based Craigville Telephone Company, which does business as AdamsWells Internet Telecom TV, and Minnesota-based Consolidated Telephone Company (CTC), asserts the FCC consent decree did nothing to compensate local carriers for harms from T-Mobile's "deceptive practices," arguing it violated the Communications Act, among others, and seeks a judgement of at least $700 million. As part of its effort to solve lingering issues of rural call completion, the FCC in 2014 prohibited the use of false ring tones, which can confuse a customer into wrongfully believing their call has gone through but that the recipient is not answering. "That is, the calling party believes the phone is ringing at the called party's premises when it is not," the FCC wrote in that order. "An originating or intermediate provider may do this to mask the silence that the caller would otherwise hear during excessive call setup time. As a result, the caller may often hang up, thinking nobody is available to receive the call." The new lawsuit claims rural LECs' businesses were injured by T-Mobile's fake ring tone scheme in multiple ways, including: lost profits, revenues, and opportunities to seek intercarrier compensation, reputational harm by the T-Mobile's customers' false impression that their local rural carrier was responsible for call completion failures, loss of good will with customers, lost time value associated with hours need to investigate and respond to customer complaints, and lost revenue for discounts that needed to be made to retain disgruntled customers. After the FCC settlement, T-Mobile acknowledged its "oversight," which it said was unintentional and fixed in early 2017, according to a statement sent to NPR at the time. The new lawsuit claims a more calculated decision, asserting that "T-Mobile consciously used this illegal practice to mask its intermediate carriers' routine failure to deliver high cost calls routed to rural areas of the United States that created a negative margin for T-Mobile. The use of the fake ring tones deceived customers into believing the calls were reaching their intended destination and thereby shifted blame for those call failures onto local phone companies, particularly rural carriers, even though the calls never even made it to these rural carriers' networks." In addition to T-Mobile, the lawsuit names Chicago-based intermediate provider Inteliqunet, which transported traffic for T-Mobile to other carriers through a 2015 Master Services Agreement. The complaint alleges Inteliquenet was looking to reduce the cost of access charges, which are paid to local phone companies for using their network to terminate calls made by T-Mobile subscribers. To lower costs, the LEC's allege Inteliqunet and T-Mobile actively conspired to "develop strategies to deter or prevent customer from making phone calls for which there are high per-minute costs to complete," including forcing significant volumes of failed calls. The lawsuit also accuses T-Mobile, Inteliquent and "several currently unidentified co-conspirators" of multiple acts of wire fraud and racketeering activity in violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). A T-Mobile spokesperson was not immediately available to respond to request for comment. The new lawsuit comes as the operator awaits a significantly more visible court case to get started. Next month the trial to decide T-Mobile's pending merger with Sprint will kick off, unless a settlement is reached with the more than dozen state AGs suing to block the deal.

Reece James sets new Chelsea record to rescue 4-4 draw vs Ajax - Metro.co.uk Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:04 PM PST ![]() Reece James has made Chelsea history following his goal which rescued a 4-4 draw against Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Frank Lampard's side were staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat as they found themselves 4-1 down to the Dutch champions after 55 minutes. But two red cards for Ajax played a key role in Chelsea's revival as Jorginho's penalty was followed up by James' goal in the 74th minute to salvage a point for the hosts at Stamford Bridge. Cesar Azpilicueta appeared to have won the game for Chelsea but his effort from close range was ruled out by VAR. ![]() James, meanwhile, has become Chelsea's youngest ever scorer in the Champions League at 19 years 332 days old. FCC Apprives T-Mobile/Sprint Merger But 10 State AGs Still Object - NPR Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:59 PM PST ![]() Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure (left) and T-Mobile CEO John Legere on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on April 30, 2018. Richard Drew/AP hide caption The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday released its Oct. 16 order allowing T-Mobile to merge with Sprint in a $26.5 billion deal. The commissioners approved the deal last month on a closed-door, 3-2 party-line vote. The merger was praised by Republican commissioners as a boon for rural America and by Democratic commissioners as a disaster for consumers. The merger still faces a legal challenge by a coalition of state attorneys general. "The Commission found that the transaction will help close the digital divide and advance United States leadership in 5G, the next generation of wireless connectivity," the FCC said in a statement. "Specifically, T-Mobile and Sprint have committed within three years to deploy 5G service to cover 97% of the American people, and within six years to reach 99% of all Americans. This commitment includes deploying 5G service to cover 85% of rural Americans within three years and 90% of rural Americans within six years. Dissenting Democratic commissioners said the promises T-Mobile and Sprint made are not enforceable and that the merger will shrink the number of national providers from four to three, thereby reducing competition overall. "In the short term, this merger will result in the loss of potentially thousands of jobs," wrote Commissioner Geoffrey Starks. "In the long term, it will establish a market of three giant wireless carriers with every incentive to divide up the market, increase prices, and compete only for the most lucrative customers." In the states' lawsuit, lead by New York and California, state attorneys general argue that the merger will reduce competition and lead to increased costs for consumers. Their suit goes to trial in December. The T-Mobile and Sprint merger has been in the works since the Obama administration. But the Justice Department and FCC opposed the deal back in 2014. Regulators under the Trump administration have been more sympathetic. Sprint is owned by the Japanese conglomerate Softbank and T-Mobile is owned by Germany's Deutsche Telekom. Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:53 PM PST A single screengrab — and lack of Facebook reactions — were the likely giveaways. Ljupco / Getty Images A viral Facebook post allegedly written by a bride who canceled her $30,000 crowd-funded wedding and refused to return the money to her friends and family appears to have been a fake post created as a marketing stunt to drive traffic to a new website focused on ~ social media drama ~. On Monday, screenshots claiming to show a bride canceling her $30,000 crowd-funded wedding via Facebook and her family's reactions were uploaded to /r/ChoosingBeggars. In the screenshots, a bride named "Pam" announced that she and her fiancé "Edward" were cancelling their Dec. 1 wedding and not returning the $30,000 in donations they had received from their family and friends. "Don't worry, the money you've donated will not be spent in vain but rather used towards a honeymoon in the coming months," Pam wrote. "After we regain financial stability and hold calm in our hearts after a honeymoon we will announce a new wedding date and re open [sic] our money fund for any further gifts. Weddings are expensive!" Pam goes on to say that she's updating the couple's "gift fund registry on Amazon" for vacation gifts in case anyone wants to purchase anything for their upcoming trip, and reassures her Facebook friends that the new wedding — for which she is clearly expecting more financial contributions — is going to be "a HIT." In a follow-up comment, the original poster shared another screenshot that claimed to be reactions to "Pam's" post. They're about what you'd expect. Although the names of the "commenters" are blurred out, they are identified by their relationship to the bride and groom, for context — although not much context is needed, since everybody commenting is really angry. The post blew up. It is currently the 14th most upvoted post of all time on the /r/ChoosingBeggars subreddit, where it was originally posted. The original poster's comments have thousands of upvotes. The thread was written up by media outlets around the world. Google News People loved it. Really loved it They demanded more content, more drama. And the original poster promised to post an update with more comments from "Pam's" family and friends. Here's where things start to get interesting. Later on Monday, more screenshots of "comments" from "Pam's" post appeared — but not on Reddit. The new images were uploaded onto the website capturedit.club. The homepage banner promised that the site delivered "social media drama." At the time the update post went up, it was the only content on the website. Another interesting thing? The website was brand new. It was created Monday, the same day of the Reddit post. Domain Tools / screenshot The update included 8 new screenshots of the "thread" — these, however, were all stamped with a "capturedit.club" watermark. The originals didn't have this. The update is also written as if the author has no direct connection to "Pam" and her "family." "Immediately after the post's popularity, the Redditor was bombarded with notifications, mostly from people dying to get an update, like this guy. We feel you, Mr. Soup-yCup!" the update read on the website, using this screenshot to show how people were hungry for more drama. But this screenshot may give away more than capturedit.club intended. This is a screengrab of a private Reddit chat request that Soup-yCup sent to the Reddit account that posted the original, viral screenshots about the alleged greedy bride. It's something only the person who made the original, viral Reddit post would see. In other words, someone behind this viral social media marketing website apparently has access to the Reddit account that posted the original, viral thread. These private message requests on Reddit are not public. Only the person who receives the request can see it. Soup-yCup's Reddit history reflects this fact: You can see all of this user's comments on their page, including one comment on the original viral post. But the message in the Captured It update post isn't there. Still, these new and watermarked "updates" from the Saga of Pam were shared to different platforms, particularly Twitter, where they have been retweeted thousands of times. Highlights from the "updated" comment thread include alleged family members vowing to sue for the return of their money. "Pam" also has a nervous breakdown and claims to use money from the fund to pay for her emergency medical bills. These watermarked "updates" made their way back to Reddit, and people there began to get suspicious about whether or not the whole thing was true. One person noticed that there were no reactions, likes, or dislikes in any of the screenshots — which seems a little weird, given the content. Further, there are no GoFundMe pages featuring a "Pam" or "Edward" for the purposes of a wedding. And despite the fact that "Pam" referenced an Amazon wedding registry in her first post, no registry could be located for a Pam / Edward wedding on Dec. 1, or any other date.
According to the submissions page, Captured It will only accept "verifiable and compelling drama from all social media websites," and all screenshots sent in must be uncensored. Also, apparently, there will be a podcast? BuzzFeed News has identified the person behind this website and reached out via multiple channels. Trump invites ASEAN leaders to US meet after skipping summit - International - World - Ahram Online Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:44 PM PST President Donald Trump has invited Southeast Asian leaders to a ``special summit'' in the United States early next year after skipping their ongoing annual summit in Thailand. Robert O'Brien, the national security adviser Trump sent in his stead, included the invitation in a letter from Trump that he read at a U.S.-ASEAN meeting on Monday on the sidelines of the summit of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Monday's meeting with the U.S. would normally would be attended by presidents or prime ministers. In a pointed adherence to diplomatic protocol, seven of 10 Southeast Asian countries sent their foreign ministers instead. Only host Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-cha of Thailand and the prime ministers of Vietnam and Laos joined O'Brien and the foreign ministers sent by other countries. Last year, Trump sent Vice President Mike Pence to the annual ASEAN summit and related meetings. This year, both he and Pence were busy campaigning during the meetings, wrapping up Monday in the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand's capital. Trump's absence from the meetings left plenty of room for China and other regional powers to raise their own profiles. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among the leaders who met with their ASEAN counterparts during the summit. In addition to O'Brien, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross also traveled to Bangkok with a trade mission that is touring the region. Despite the apparent downgrading of the ASEAN gathering by Trump, U.S. businesses and government were seeking to emphasize the American commitment to the region with a privately-led conference attended by about 1,000 business and government officials. There, Ross outlined a slew of figures on trade and investment between the U.S. and what Washington has dubbed the ``Indo-Pacific region.'' ``The Trump administration is extremely engaged in and fully committed to this region,'' Ross told the meeting. In his own comments at the meeting with ASEAN leaders, O'Brien made a swipe at China, saying Beijing ``has used intimidation to try to stop ASEAN nations from exploiting their offshore resources, blocking access to $2.5 trillion in oil and gas reserves alone. These tactics go against the rules of respect, fairness and international law.'' ``The region has no interest in a new imperial era where a big country can rule others on the theory that might makes right. America is helping our ASEAN friends uphold their sovereignty,'' he said. ASEAN members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Together, they comprise a fast-growing regional market of nearly 650 million people. How Rand Paul's Calls to Out the Ukraine Whistleblower Make America Less Safe - GQ Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:44 PM PST ![]() During a Trump campaign rally in Lexington, Kentucky on Monday, the state's junior senator, Rand Paul, stopped by to offer a spirited defense of his party's leader and an unsubtle threat to those he considers enemies. "We also now know the name of the whistleblower," Paul said triumphantly, referring to the intelligence community official who reported on Trump's efforts to coerce Ukraine's president to open a politically-motivated investigation of former vice president Joe Biden. After questioning the whistleblower's motivations and suggesting that he be dragged before Congress as a "material witness" in the matter, the senator pointed directly at the assembled TV cameras. "I say tonight to the media: Do your job and print his name!" Trump, who has asserted a right to "learn everything about" the whistleblower and issued a similar call for their public testimony earlier that day, smirked as he joined in the crowd's applause. "Wow, that was excellent," he said after Paul concluded his performance. "He's a warrior." Within the right-wing media ecosystem, efforts to out the whistleblower have been underway for some time already. Multiple outlets have provided valuable signal boosts to unconfirmed reports identifying an individual who allegedly filed the complaint, digging up old school photos to accompany their stories on the subject. Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill have reportedly invoked the person's name in closed-door impeachment hearings, and circulated a dossier of information about their biography, professional history, and alleged links to Democratic politicians and members of the Deep State. Paul, a self-proclaimed libertarian who made a crusade against warrantless surveillance a key feature of his 2016 presidential campaign, used to be an occasional advocate for strengthening whistleblower protection laws and institutions. When government contractors "see something wrong," he said at a conference in 2014, "they should be able to report it without repercussions." Even today, his web site still contains vestiges of a pro-whistleblower worldview that he apparently held before the Trump era made that worldview politically inconvenient. Last week, he even tweeted to his 2.6 million followers a link that included the name in question, calling it "imperative" that lawmakers subpoena the person and have the chance to interrogate them under oath. What was a fringe movement to out the alleged Ukraine whistleblower has gone mainstream. Shoddy protections for whistleblowers in the United States are neither a new nor a partisan problem. In a 2011 feature for The New Yorker, Jane Mayer profiled the "surprising relentlessness" with which the Obama administration prosecuted leaks, a trend she characterized as at odds with his praise of whistleblowers as "often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government." Two years later, U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden fled the country after publishing thousands of documents describing, among other things, the government's clandestine efforts to spy on other countries and its own citizens. He has since explained that the laws shielding whistleblowers from retaliation were too convoluted for him to trust, and that he felt there were "no proper channels" through which he could report what he knew. For publishing documents that exposed the extent of civilian deaths in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, former U.S. Army soldier Chelsea Manning received a 35-year prison sentence; she served about seven years of it before then-President Obama commuted the balance in 2017. Kentucky's gubernatorial grudge match reverberates for 2020 - Manistee News Advocate Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:14 PM PST

Kentucky's voters are now deciding the political grudge match between Republican Gov. Matt Bevin and Beshear. less Kentucky Attorney General and democratic Gubernatorial candidate Andy Beshear studies his ballot at the Knights of Columbus polling location Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, in Louisville, Ky. Kentucky's voters are now ... more Photo: Bryan Woolston, AP LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky's political grudge match between Republican Gov. Matt Bevin and Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear went to the voters Tuesday, hours after the incumbent governor received a ringing presidential endorsement as he tried to overcome a tenacious challenger bearing a well-known last name. The bitterly fought campaign ended with an election eve splash: a rally headlined by President Donald Trump at Rupp Arena in Lexington meant to give Bevin a last-minute boost. The result could reverberate far beyond Kentucky. The fierce contest was being watched closely for early signs of how the increasingly partisan impeachment furor in Washington might affect Trump and other Republican incumbents in 2020 . Among those with an especially keen interest: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who's on the ballot himself next year in Kentucky. Bevin tried to link himself to Trump's popularity among Kentuckians in ads, tweets and speeches throughout the campaign. It was part of his strategy to nationalize the race and rev up his conservative base. The governor called for a crackdown on illegal immigration and a ban on "sanctuary cities." He denounced the impeachment investigation of Trump. He also stressed his opposition to abortion. Beshear, the son of Kentucky's last Democratic governor, countered with a disciplined campaign style that stressed what he called "kitchen table" issues — education, jobs and health care. He exploited Bevin's combative style, branding the governor as a bully for a running feud with teachers who opposed his efforts to revamp the state's woefully underfunded public pension systems. Bevin lashed out at teachers who used sick days to rally at Kentucky's Capitol. In 2018, Bevin asserted without evidence that an unidentified child who had been left home alone somewhere in the state had been sexually assaulted on a day of mass school closings as teachers rallied. He apologized but doubled down earlier this year by connecting a girl's shooting in Louisville with school closings caused by teacher protests. The rivals offered voters stark differences on a host of issues, many of which — including Trump and abortion — were on voters' minds as they cast ballots Tuesday. In Louisville, 25-year-old Rin Mohan said national politics have motivated people her age to vote. Mohan, who works at a preschool, sees Bevin as a governor who has followed Trump's example and "ruled with fear and division." She said she likes Beshear but would have voted for just about anyone running against Bevin. "I do think that people's frustrations with Matt Bevin exist outside of Donald Trump," she said. "But I think it may have galvanized people who usually feel like they don't have any say in a red state to come out and vote to make their voices feel heard." In Ashland, Donna Barker, a 78-year-old retired teachers assistant, said she voted for Bevin because his background in business allowed him to make tough decisions on pensions, reproductive rights and education. "It's very important that we have a businessman and a good moral man," she said, as she cautioned that "the pensions will probably get him." The election will settle a bitter rivalry that stretched from the statehouse to courtrooms and finally to the campaign. Wielding his authority as the state's top lawyer, Beshear filed a series of lawsuits challenging Bevin's executive actions to make wholesale changes to boards and commissions and sought to block Bevin-backed pension and education initiatives. In the highest-profile case, a Beshear lawsuit led Kentucky's Supreme Court to strike down a Bevin-supported pension law on procedural grounds last year. Bevin ramped up the rivalry by frequently attacking Beshear and his challenger's father in deeply personal terms. Beshear's father, former two-term Gov. Steve Beshear, preceded Bevin in office. Andy Beshear took a shot at Bevin on Tuesday after Trump's visit. "He had to have someone come to town for him, because he knew he couldn't win it on his own merits," Beshear said. Bevin supports charter schools as part of a school-choice agenda. Beshear opposes them, saying they'll divert money from public schools. Bevin is an outspoken abortion opponent. Beshear supports abortion rights but backs "reasonable restrictions," especially on late-term procedures. Beshear wants to legalize casino gambling to raise revenue for underfunded public pension systems. Bevin sees expanded gambling as a "sucker's bet." Bevin wants to require some "able-bodied" Medicaid recipients to get a job, go to school or volunteer to keep their benefits. Beshear vowed to rescind the "waiver," saying it would callously deprive tens of thousands of health coverage. A federal judge blocked the work requirements. Bevin's administration is appealing. Kentucky's secretary of state, Alison Lundergan Grimes, predicted that just 31% of Kentucky's registered voters will go to the polls — at or slightly above turnout in the 2015 governor's election. ___ Associated Press Writers Anthony Izaguirre in Ashland, Claire Galofaro in Louisville and AP freelancer Bryan Woolston contributed to this report. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's Goal Lifts Liverpool Past Racing Genk 2-1 in UCL - Bleacher Report Posted: 05 Nov 2019 04:23 PM PST ![]() Defending champions Liverpool faced a surprisingly stiff test against Belgium's Genk on Tuesday in Champions League Group E play. But after finding themselves knotted at 1-1 apiece at the half, Liverpool emerged as the 2-1 winner. Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tallied for Liverpool, while Mbwana Samatta scored the lone goal for Genk. With the result, Liverpool moved to nine points and atop the Group E table after Napoli's 1-1 draw with Salzburg, while Genk's already dim chances of advancing to the knockout phase were officially put to rest, as they have just one point and remain at the bottom of the group. Liverpool looked like they might run away with this one early, as Wijnaldum poached a goal in the 14th minute after Genk's defenders failed to clear a James Milner low cross. Bleacher Report Live @brlive The Reds continued to press the issue, though they couldn't extend their lead, at least not until Genk found an equalizer. It was Samatta who pulled the underdogs even, as he made an excellent—albeit unmarked—run on a corner and deftly directed his header past Bleacher Report Live @brlive Football on BT Sport @btsportfootball That gave Genk hope heading into the final 45, but Liverpool have become experts at snuffing out such hope. Indeed, just eight minutes into the second frame, Oxlade-Chamberlain continued his excellent run of form, with a scintillating turn-and-finish inside the box to restore Liverpool's advantage. Bleacher Report Live @brlive OptaJoe @OptaJoe Melissa Reddy @MelissaReddy_ Genk had their chances, but the Reds handled their business from there, polishing off a tidy if nervier-than-expected win. James Pearce @JamesPearceLFC Liverpool are now a victory away from guaranteeing themselves a place in the knockout phase, while a draw would all but punch their ticket to the next round. And if Salzburg drops any points at all in their next two matches, Liverpool are through. Granted, the Reds will be looking to win their group, so squeaking into the next round won't be deemed an unacceptable result. But for a side that has lost just once this season in all competitions, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
What's Next? Liverpool have a crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, while Genk are also in domestic action on the same day when they host Gent. "It is an important match, ourselves and Borussia both have four points in the standings. I think that Barcelona has already secured a place in the next round," he said. "We were good at winning at San Siro against Borussia, we know we will meet a strong team tomorrow and one that has proven themselves in the Champions League for many years. "We will have to be very careful, at the same time it is an important step in a warm, electric environment, we know full well what kind of atmosphere their fans can create and for this reason it will be important to play with personality. "We come to play our own game. It is an important step of growth and I think we can do it by facing the games as it should be, playing as we have prepared." He was then asked about Stefano Sensi and whether he could start the match. "He has trained with us three times lately, the first time being on the eve of the Bologna match. He is available, he has recovered. We will make evaluations with the staff to understand how it is best to use him. We will make the evaluations for the good of the team and the player." He was asked if he will deploy a defensive game plan. "Our growth comes from our mentality. If we play a defensive game it is because Borussia has been good at putting us there but our intention is to play the same way at home and away. The six away wins in the league testify that. "We know our strengths and weaknesses, on which we are working to decrease them. Those who expect a totally defensive performance on our part are wrong. It is not what we work for. The strength of our opponents can put us in certain situations. "We will have to be good in times of suffering, that will happen, to be compact and defend well. In the possession phase we know what to do. We come here to take another step, like in Barcelona." "Our idea when we are in possession is to score goals and create chances. We are not a team who can defend and hit teams on the counter as we do not have many quick players. We have trained different situations where we can create opportunities to score goals, our mentality is to hurt our opponent." Next he admitted he is hoping the team's energy levels will not have an impact. "We are coming to the end of another mini-cycle. I keep my fingers crossed because in the other mini-cycle we suffered two defeats in the last two against Barcelona and Juventus, despite playing two good matches. "The Champions League is a stimulant and helps players find energy even when their energy tanks are not so full. We will have to be good at playing our game knowing that we have worked so hard to deal with this type of commitment both from a tactical and a physical point of view." He also shared his views on the racist abuse former Inter striker Mario Balotelli was subjected to over the weekend. "There are some morons that must be punished. We cannot tolerate this. We are in 2019, it is absurd that we have to talk about racism." In conclusion he was asked about the respective conditions of Danilo D'Ambrosio and Kwadwo Asamoah. "They didn't leave, they are not available for tomorrow's game. Roberto Gagliardini remained at home too." The Pros and Cons of the De-aging Effects in ‘The Irishman’ - The Ringer Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:37 AM PST The Pros and Cons of the De-aging Effects in 'The Irishman' - The Ringer ![]() When it comes to the discourse around The Irishman, the exhausting and seemingly never-ending debate surrounding Martin Scorsese and Marvel has distracted us from the things that really matter about this film: Al Pacino's working with Scorsese for (somehow) the first time in his career; the great Joe Pesci's coming out of retirement; and, of course, the movie's highly publicized, highly expensive foray into de-aging VFX. Because The Irishman spans decades, following hitman Frank Sheeran from his service in World War II to his time with the mob and Jimmy Hoffa in the subsequent decades—the film's framing device is an older Sheeran reminiscing about his life from a retirement home—and because the film's leading actors are in their 70s, having capable de-aging tech was an essential component of the project. (Sure, Scorsese could've used young actors or something, but seeing living legends like Robert De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci share the screen again is a huge part of the movie's appeal.) But The Irishman's de-aging VFX also ran the risk of being the film's biggest problem. Since so much of the movie takes place in the past with "younger" versions of the characters, unconvincing de-aging technology could be a huge distraction from the actual storytelling. The film's trailers and production stills didn't inspire much confidence; World War II–era De Niro looked like he came straight from a mid-2000s video game and was gloriously memed into oblivion. Where The Irishman's de-aging landed on the spectrum from Samuel L. Jackson's surprisingly convincing Young Nick Fury in Captain Marvel to the hauntingly soulless expressions of Evil Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy was always going to be important for the film. With de-aging effects already being used to varying degrees in Gemini Man, Terminator: Dark Fate, Captain Marvel, and It: Chapter 2, 2019 has been a watershed year for using the technology onscreen. (Most of the effects have been surprisingly fine—or at the very least, doesn't distract from the viewing experience.) On the whole, The Irishman's de-aging isn't exactly flawless, but it manages not to ruin an otherwise-great Martin Scorsese film. Though, having seen the movie in a theater, I'm curious whether audiences will find the effects better or worse watching it at home—this is how most people will see the film—where it'll be available on Netflix beginning November 27. Having spent more than three hours with my De-aged Italian/Irish Sons, these are the biggest pros and cons you should take into consideration before seeing The Irishman for yourself. Pro: It's Way Better Than Most De-Aging EffortsWhile The Irishman was something Scorsese had hoped to make for years, the director wanted to be sure the de-aging tech was up to the task first. In 2015, he tested the aptitude of de-aging visual effects by having De Niro re-create a scene from Goodfellas; it was good enough that The Irishman went into production two years later. Four years isn't a long time, but when it comes to using visual effects to de-age and/or re-create someone's likeness—remember the bizarre and ethically dubious use of CGI Peter Cushing from Rogue One in 2016?—it might as well be a lifetime. Pacino and Pesci's de-aging stand out as the most effective in the film—for the former, it especially helps that Jimmy Hoffa was in his 60s by the time he mysteriously disappeared. As for Pesci, if we were all willing to accept that he was playing someone in his late 20s in Goodfellas—Pesci was 46 at the time and won a much-deserved Oscar for the performance—I think we can handle 76-year-old Pesci playing someone decades younger yet again. Con: The De-Aging Effect Is Still Uncanny and Takes Time to Get Used ToWhere The Irishman's de-aging occasionally stumbles is, unfortunately, with its lead. De Niro, as Sheeran, looks nowhere near as bad as the trailers and production stills would make him out to be, but there's a certain sheen to De Niro's de-aged face. (The brief World War II moments were, predictably, the worst of the bunch; de-aged De Niro did not look anything like a person in his 20s.) Not helping matters is the fact that De Niro gives a rather subdued performance. Sheeran spends good portions of the film being a quiet observer to mob/union chaos, and De Niro's de-aged face looks weirder when it isn't moving as much. But perhaps worst of all, Pesci's mob boss Russell Bufalino repeatedly refers to Sheeran as "kid," a statement so off-putting it's genuinely distracting the first couple of times it happened. Pesci and De Niro are the same age in real life, and that extended to the de-aging effects for both of their characters. There's never a point when you're convinced that Pesci is playing someone who's Sheeran's senior, or that anyone who isn't an old man in a wheelchair should be calling De Niro "kid." Pro: It Lets the Best Actors on the Planet CookThe effectiveness of The Irishman's VFX could set a strange precedent, where older, popular actors become de-aged for younger roles. (Upon getting a de-aged makeover, De Niro reportedly told effects supervisor Pablo Helman: "You just gave me 30 more years of my career.") On the one hand, the development of de-aging VFX would allow a veteran actor to expand their range—Will Smith did a great job tweaking his affects to play a "younger" him in Gemini Man—but it might come at the expense of opportunities for younger actors who could play the part themselves. Like, imagine if this technology existed when The Godfather: Part II came out—it would be dope to see what a de-aged Marlon Brando would have been able to do, but playing a younger Vito Corleone remains one of the most iconic and celebrated performances of De Niro's superlative career. And yet The Irishman feels like a special exception—if only because of what the project signifies. De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci are practically synonymous with gangster epics; Scorsese's getting the gang back together for [Dominic Torretto voice] one last ride is a thrilling, momentous event. When the de-aging technology allows you to let some of the best actors on the planet cook, you might as well let them while we can still appreciate their talents. Con: The Actors' Performances Are Occasionally HinderedIt's one thing to have an actor's face and body convincingly de-aged; it's another to feel convinced someone is moving around like a younger person. That's an occasional issue in The Irishman that Scorsese had to deal with (and that you will probably notice it a little for yourself). The filmmaker told Sight & Sound magazine that they had to digitally alter De Niro's mouth so that he could "convey a kind of vulnerability and a haplessness." According to Scorsese, the actor couldn't pull the look off without seeming "threatening." (Although, LOL, when, at any age, has Robert De Niro not looked intimidating?) They also needed to reshoot a scene of Pacino-as-Hoffa getting out of his chair because, essentially, it didn't look like he was getting up "like a 49-year-old." (Scorsese joked they got Pacino down to a "62" on the second take, which is the biggest burn the actor's suffered since the release of Jack and Jill.) No amount of technological advancements in de-aging can replace someone moving and feeling like they're younger; extended de-aged performances that require some level of physicality will always look slightly off. When Sheeran assaults a grocery store clerk who hit his young daughter, I never got the impression he was throwing around his weight like a young man—but at the same time, I didn't really mind since it's still really compelling to watch an angry Robert De Niro curb-stomp someone's hand. (If Rotten Tomatoes tries to label this as an Irishman review, please use the above sentence as a pull quote.) The good of The Irishman's de-aging VFX more than outweighs the bad, and while Hollywood probably won't rush to incorporate the tech in every movie starting tomorrow, it still represents a major turning point. Ang Lee used high-frame-rate filmmaking in Gemini Man, and believes that the innovation will be the future of cinema. The future of filmmaking may indeed lie in a creative decision from Gemini Man, but not in the way Lee thought. 2019-11-05 10:40:00Z https://www.theringer.com/movies/2019/11/5/20948617/the-irishman-aging-tech-martin-scorcese-robert-de-niro |
