Siegenthaler's first goal, the second line stays hot and the non Wilson-Reaves rematch - NBCSports.com

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 09:52 PM PST

Raise your hand if you had Jonas Siegenthaler scoring the game-winner on Saturday against the Vegas Golden Knights. Anyone? Believe it or not, the rookie defenseman's first goal of his NHL career was, in fact, the game-winner in the Caps' 5-2 victory over Vegas.

Check out the game recap here.

Observations from the win

No fisticuffs for Wilson and Reaves

This was a feisty game with a lot of pushing and shoving after the whistle. T.J. Oshie got so fed up at one point, he just took down Brayden McNabb. Pretty much everyone was involved...except for Tom Wilson and Ryan Reaves.

Wilson and Reaves said all the right things before the game, diffusing any potential fireworks we could possibly see stemming from last year's late hit that Reaves delivered to Wilson. Even if they wanted to, it would have been hard for them to go after one another considering they were never on the ice at the same time. Wilson and Reaves were both on the ice together for a grand total of 1:46. There was no player on Vegas that Wilson played less against than Reaves.

Even if they had wanted to go after each other, they really did not have the opportunity to do it. That worked out just fine for the Caps who would have lost that trade-off between Wilson and Reaves if they both ended up in the box for fighting.

The second line is red-hot

In the last four games, Wilson has four goals and four assists, Jakub Vrana has five goals and two assists and Evgeny Kuznetsov has one goal and six assists. That line is really clicking right now.

"They're definitely getting some chemistry," Todd Reirden said. "I think they're really reading off one another, I think they're playing a complete game. Not all of it's coming off of offensive zone and rush plays, some of it's coming off of faceoffs, some of it's coming off of playing in D zone first and getting rush opportunities. They have obviously a lot of speed on that line on both wings and obviously Kuzy is an elite skater so they've been able to create a lot of opportunities."

Braden Holtby has rebounded

On Oct. 14, Holtby was pulled in a game against the Colorado Avalanche after giving up three goals on the first three shots he faced. Since then, Holtby has gone 7-0-1 with a .920 save percentage.

Offensive output

The Caps have played 18 games this season and have scored four goals or more in 12 of those games. The Caps consciously gave up goal scorers to focus on defense in the offseason and yet the offense is currently leading the NHL with 4.06 goals per game.

"I was pretty confident we were going to score goals this year," Reirden said. "We made some decisions personnel-wise as an organization that we let a few goals leave our organization and the idea of trying to become a more well rounded, more difficult team to play against, better penalty killing, better two-way play. If you install the right system within that and you have the buy-in from players about what you're trying to accomplish as a team then you're going to have success with the skill level that we have. It's good to see obviously Nick [Backstrom] get a couple today, but you're starting to get contributions from defenseman and the second line has been really hot lately."

That last part there is key. How does the offense keep clicking with a top-heavy top six and virtually no offense from the third line? It's the defense. The contributions from the defense have been absolutely key to the offense clicking and we saw that again on Saturday with Jonas Siegenthaler scoring the game-winner to go along with John Carlson's two assists and Dmitry Orlov's one.

Turning point

In the moment I thought the answer would be Siegenthaler's goal. In a 2-1 game in which neither team could gain control, Siegenthaler's goal seemed like the moment that would break open the game for Washington. Then Garnet Hathaway took a penalty, Vegas scored on the power play and it was a one-goal game again. You knew the game was over though in the third period when Backstrom squeezed one past Marc-Andre Fleury.

Play of the night

Not only did Siegenthaler score his first goal of his NHL career, but he did it on the one-year anniversary of his NHL debut. That deserves a tip of the cap.

Stat of the night

When you pass a legendary player like Scott Stevens, you know you're doing something right.

Quote of the night

Siegenthaler sounding real casual about his first goal:

"I kind of saw the free ice in the middle and I saw [Travis Boyd] turning up. I was like yeah let's jump in there and he saw me."

Fan predictions

The only fight these two had was to see who could downplay their rivalry more.

Reaves was about the only player with no bite for Vegas on Saturday.

Carl Hagelin is a huge part of the power play, but the Caps managed to allow only one goal on four opportunities and a lot of those came at critical moments.

You got the two-goal scorers right thanks to an empty-netter for Backstrom. That feels like the fan prediction equivalent to a backdoor cover.

OK, I guess you'll have to keep predicting it. Someone had the same strategy about a Radko Gudas goal, but they eventually gave up.

Logan Paul vs. KSI 2: Live fight updates, round-by-round-results, highlights - DAZN News US

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 09:21 PM PST

Logan Paul and KSI had colorful banter this entire week, with Paul even giving KSI an impromptu math quiz that culminated in KSI shoving his rival.

During Friday's weigh-in, Paul irked KSI further, copying his opponent's flexing poses.

Well, now the time for talking and (perhaps) posturing is over, as the YouTubers step back into the ring Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and live on DAZN, for their highly anticipated rematch. After fighting to a majority draw in their first bout last summer, Paul and KSI will lose the headgear and don 10-ounce gloves in attempt to try to bring closure to their rivalry.

Throughout the week, Paul and KSI have been clamoring about delivering a knockout.

"If you want to go six rounds, we can go six rounds, but I promise that will not be good for your health." Paul told KSI at the final press conference of the week.

Shannon Briggs, his trainer and former world heavyweight champion, is predicting an emphatic finish.

"It's a different Logan now," Briggs said. "KSI doesn't respect Logan. I think Logan is going to knock him out. He's going to stop him, punish him."

KSI obviously feels very different.

"Last year, I was just all right," KSI said. "Next fight, I'm ending his career. One right hand, and I'm putting Logan to sleep."

The fight is available to watch by signing up on DAZN. You can also follow here for live fight updates, round-by-round results and highlights from the main event.

Logan Paul vs. KSI 2 live updates, round-by-round results

12:12 a.m.: The ref recites the rules and this one is on!

12:10 a.m.: Michael Buffer lets his infamous words rip before introducing Paul and now KSI.

12:05 a.m.: National anthem performances to be followed by fighter introductions and this highly-anticipated rematch will be on and popping. Paul and KSI each tout millions of YouTube subscribers, but none of the masses will be able to help them tonight. The only numbers likely to matter is the number of punches they throw ... and more importantly connect on. After their majority draw last summer, gone is the headgear and on is the 10-ounce gloves. Regardless of who wins in their professional debut tonight, this should be nothing less of an entertaining spectacle. Buckle up!

12:02 a.m.: Rick Ross rhyming in the ring, as KSI, donning a mask and looking like he's super focused, makes his ring walk.

12:00 a.m.: Logan Paul with his back to the cameras, before making his ring walk.

For round-by-round results of the Billy Joe Saunders and Devin Haney fights, click here.

11:46 p.m.: And that's that for Ababiy-Batista, which was a bizarre one-round fight. Ababiy knocked down Batista after hitting him in the back of the head. The referee deducted a point from Ababiy, who had dominated the round. But then, when the bell rang to end the round, Batista kept throwing punches. The referee stepped in, and when Batista tried to throw yet another punch, he was disqualified. And with that, the fight ended. Up next: Logan Paul and KSI.

11:39 p.m.: No, that's not Logan Paul entering the ring, but Nikita "White Chocolate" Ababiy, who's facing Jonathan Batista. This is the last fight before Paul and KSI gets underway.

11:33 p.m.: Devin Haney defends his WBC lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Alfredo Santiago. It wasn't the knockout-performance many expected, but in the post-fight interview Haney said he injured his shoulder.

11:27 p.m.: Before the final round of Haney vs. Santiago, DAZN shows KSI with the gloves on warming up. Paul, meanwhile, is sitting in a chair, gloves not on yet, and looks relaxed.

11:20 p.m.: Another betting update: Expert Rob Perez says while Paul is still the favorite, the line is now down to -295 Paul (previously -334) and at +225 for KSI.

11:14 p.m. We're entering the ninth round of the Haney-Santiago fight. We're nearing KSI-Paul time.

11:02 p.m.: Haney dropped Santiago after an aggressive fifth round. Santiago got out of the round, but will he last much longer?

10:54 p.m.: Justin Bieber is in Logan Paul's locker room before the fight, in prayer with Team Logan.

10:52 p.m.: If you're wondering who's favored in the fight, betting expert Rob Perez says Paul is the favorite (-334), and KSI is the underdog (+250). Meanwhile, earlier in the night on DAZN's countdown show, Ryan Garcia revealed he bet $10,000 on Logan Paul winning.

10:48 p.m.: Are two Pauls in the ring better than one?

10:43 p.m.: And we're underway for the Haney vs. Santiago fight, with Haney defending his WBC lightweight belt.

10:33 p.m.: DAZN just showed an interview with rising star Devin Haney, who's getting ready to fight next, telling the story of how he knocked someone out of his shoes — literally — the first time he sparred in the gym. Haney is expected to be one of the big names in boxing and to put on a show tonight.

10:26 p.m.: Jake Paul says he'll be walking out with Logan Paul when he takes the ring, but he's unsure if Justin Bieber, who's at the arena, will walk out with them.

10:21 p.m.: Saunders took longer than expected to take care of Coceres, and he apologized to the crowd for his performance. Still, Saunders says he's ready to take on the face of boxing, Canelo Alvarez.

10:10 p.m.: Billy Joe Saunders finishes Marcelo Coceres with three knockdowns in the 11th round. The referee has seen enough, and Saunders keeps his WBO supper middleweight belt.

10:01 p.m.: We're about an hour away from KSI and Logan Paul taking the ring. In the meantime, the fighters have arrived, as have the celebrities, and Paul has revealed a U.S.-inspired outfit for the night.

Undercard results

- Joshua Brueckner def. Tyler Smith by unanimous decision

- Diego Pacheco def. Aaron Casper by fourth-round KO

- Ronny Rios def. Hugo Berrio by fourth-round KO

Before the main event begins, you can watch the KSI vs. Logan Paul countdown show:

What time does the Logan Paul vs. KSI 2 main event start?

  • Date: Saturday, Nov. 9
  • Time: 11:30 p.m. ET (approximately)

Late Barella stunner sends Inter back to Serie A summit - The World Game

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 09:21 PM PST

Valerio Verre scored a 19th-minute penalty, his first Verona goal, to give the visitors a surprise lead at San Siro.

Inter piled on the pressure but could not find a breakthrough until Matias Vecino headed in to score for the second straight game with 25 minutes remaining.

And just as it looked like Verona would come away with a point, Barella produced a moment of magic.

The victory moved Inter two points clear of champions Juventus, who will attempt to respond when they host AC Milan in their game in hand on Monday (AEDT).

After Lautaro Martinez headed over a good early chance, Verona took a surprise lead from the spot.

Verre sent Samir Handanovic the wrong way, the penalty awarded after the Inter goalkeeper had brought down Mattia Zaccagni, who was slipped through by Darko Lazovic at the end of a swift counter-attack.

The hosts bombarded the Verona goal from there, as Lukaku stabbed in a low effort that was well saved by Marco Silvestri before the Belgium striker dragged a shot wide from a better opportunity in Inter's next attack.

Marcelo Brozovic clipped the crossbar with a dipping 20-yard strike and defender Alan Empereur frantically cleared off the goal line after Silvestri had partially saved Vecino's shot from a tight angle.

The equaliser arrived for Inter when Vecino got on the end of Valentino Lazaro's cross and planted a header into the bottom corner from six yards.

Silvestri made key saves from Antonio Candreva and Alessandro Bastoni, whose cross-shot in a separate attack somehow went through Lukaku's legs when any contact with the ball was likely to end up in a goal.

Lukaku had another chance to snatch a winner, but could only send a header straight at Silvestri, who was caught off his line after a loose back-pass.

But Barella ensured the home fans would go away happy, cutting inside from the left and curling a magnificent strike into the far corner.

What does it mean? Ideal Inter boost after Dortmund collapse

After a miserable collapse against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday (AEDT) was followed by a rant from Antonio Conte, Inter had their backs against the wall when they fell behind in the first half.

But an impressive response saw them pepper the Verona goal and ensure that, regardless of Juve's result against their city rivals, they will be right in contention after the international break.

Creative class from Inter

Inter racked up 38 shots, with their wide players, creative stars and even their defence providing opportunities galore for the men in attack.

Centre-backs Stefan de Vrij – who found Barella for the winner - and Bastoni made nine chances between them, Lazaro and Cristiano Biraghi were a constant threat out wide, while Martinez was showing his usual all-round ability up top.

Lukaku lax in front of goal

Lukaku came into the game looking to become the first player since 1948 to score 10 goals in his first 12 Serie A appearances, but struggled badly in front of goal as he was unable to achieve the feat, failing to score from eight attempts and unable to get a touch on Bastoni's effort with the match up for grabs at 1-1.

What's next?

Inter will seek a fourth straight league win when they play away to Torino on November 24, while Verona host Fiorentina the following day.

Busquets: Having Messi is a very big advantage - MARCA.com

Busquets celebrates his goal
Busquets celebrates his goal AFP

Sergio Busquets knows exactly how important Lionel Messi is to this Barcelona team.

The Argentine star scored a hat-trick in the Blaugrana's 4-1 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday, including two goals from freekicks.

"We have a very big advantage, he's the best in the world and also the best freekick taker in the world," Busquets told Movistar about Messi.

"He's been improving bit by bit and it was difficult.

"Having him is a very big advantage."

Busquets scored a rare goal to round off Barcelona's victory at the Camp Nou as they regained top spot in LaLiga Santander.

"I hadn't scored in a while, although that's normal," he said.

"The important thing was that the team won. We were struggling in LaLiga Santander and the Champions League and it was important to stay top and go into the international break with calmness."

Ernesto Valverde and his players have come under pressure in recent weeks for their disappointing performances and results.

"We know where we are and, if we don't win, that creates doubts... and even more so if we don't play in the best way," Busquets said.

"It's normal that there's pressure [on us], this is the best club in the world."

Ex-Inter Defender Daniele Adani: "Some Still Don't Understand The Importance Of Inter's Matias Vecino" - SempreInter

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 08:19 PM PST

Former Inter defender Daniele Adani discussed the Nerazzurri's important 2-1 victory over Hellas Verona last night to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.

"The suffering in the second half is improving. A match well done. Vecino as always is one, also in difficulties he reacts, the team is always alive."

"Vecino immediately on the right path who reacted well and was stimulating. The coach's can also be seen in his performances. Conte is the one there. He passes through there to get to today."

"Vecino is an important player for Conte, Spalletti, Tabarez. Important for football. Some still don't understand the importance of Matias Vecino. If you don't miss him when he's not there, the truth is that you feel the weight when he's there."

The Nerazzurri's victory last night put them top of the league table, two points ahead of rivals Juventus. However, if the Bianconeri beat AC Milan tonight they will return to the top of the league table again.

Shea Weber’s 100th power-play goal will be tough to forget - NBCSports.com

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 08:17 PM PST

Here's a sign when an NHL player did something pretty astounding: when even that player is laughing at the result.

Shea Weber couldn't help but do so after scoring his 100th career power-play goal with high style, batting his own rebound out of the air with accuracy and velocity. You can check out video of that goal in the clip above this post's headline, and the NHL also provided an iso shot of Weber the whole time.

You can see him gamely tracking the puck and then scoring:

That wasn't even Weber's lone power-play goal of the night, as he reached PPG 101 later on.

As of this writing, Weber now has 208 career goals, with 101 coming on power plays. Considering his thunderous slapper, it's not surprising that he's so dangerous in man advantage situations — arguably to the point that, at times, teams force the puck to him too often. When you see goals like Weber's 100th PPG, it's easy to understand why some coaches might just shrug their shoulders and say "Just let Shea shoot it."

PITTSBURGH — For the second game in a row the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to come back from a multiple goal deficit to take two points in the standings, erasing a two-goal deficit to pick up a 3-2 shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.

This latest win came with a potentially big cost, however, as Sidney Crosby exited the game early in the third period after a tough shift that saw him get tangled up with Blackhawks' defenseman Erik Gustafsson, and then later block a shot with his foot.

That was his only shift of the period and it is not clear what exactly caused the injury.

The only update Penguins coach Mike Sullivan had after the game was that Crosby was in the process of being evaluated for a "lower-body injury" and that an update is expected on Monday. The Penguins' next game will be on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers.

Crosby is the engine that drives the Penguins' team and he has been his usual dominant self this season in all phases of the game. Losing him would be a pretty significant blow, especially as the team is already playing without No. 1 defenseman Kris Letang and forward Patric Hornqvist.

The season is not even a quarter of the way old and injuries have been a constant issue for the Penguins from the very beginning. At various times they have been without Evgeni Malkin, Alex Galchenyuk, Bryan Rust, Jared McCann, Nick Bjugstad, Brian Dumoulin, Letang, Hornqvist, and now — potentially — Crosby. They have only had their full roster as it was intended to look for a handful of games. They have dominated in those rare instances where they have been fully healthy, they have just not had a chance to see it very often.

Even with the injuries Saturday's win improved the Penguins to 10-6-1 on the season. They are currently on a 4-1-1 run over their past six games. The only regulation loss came on Monday night in Boston when they erased a 3-0 deficit only to lose late in the third period.

Adam Gretz is a writer for Pro Hockey Talk on NBC Sports. Drop him a line at phtblog@nbcsports.com or follow him on Twitter @AGretz.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Mitch Marner will not return to Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers because of an ankle injury.

Marner seemed frustrated while trying to test the ankle, either because he wanted to play through it, or was merely irritated by the tough break … or maybe both. As you can see from the video above and the screencap, it was a very awkward-looking moment.

Here's hoping it looked worse than it really was, as this would be a tough injury for a Maple Leafs team that's felt a bit rudderless at times even with Marner healthy. While their 9-5-3 record heading into Saturday's game against Philly isn't so bad, there have been enough red flags to feel a little restless, especially for fans who bit their nails through the Marner contract drama in the summer.

The Maple Leafs have already dealt with an injury to John Tavares this summer, so this could continue a bumpy start to 2019-20.

This figures to be a tough season for the Ottawa Senators, but there's enough interesting young talent on this team that you can't totally fall asleep against them.

You also might want to time your restroom/fridge trips until intermissions.

If you merely walked away to get a Pop Tart or something, you might have missed two goals in just four seconds during Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. First, Vladislav Namestnikov beat James Reimer for his sixth goal of the season, then Jean-Gabriel Pageau continued a hot streak by getting open and beating Reimer from a dangerous spot just four seconds later.

(It's now the eighth goal of this young season for JGP, who might just establish himself as a part of the Senators core at this pace.)

Enjoy those two goals in the video above, and consider how rare this feat was. Four seconds or less is something even Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie would be impressed by.

As you can see from that above graphic, the Montreal Canadiens have the record by scoring twice in two seconds on Nov. 1, 2018, but that feels a bit like cheating since the second goal happened on an empty net. Still really cool and worth revisiting, though:

Three Stars

1. Jonathan Bernier, Detroit Red Wings. Robby Fabbri was not the only Red Wings player to have a big night in their upset win over the Boston Bruins. Bernier had a huge night making 26 saves — including a highlight reel glove save on David Pastrnak that you will see down below — and recording two assists. He is the first goalie since Tuukka Rask in 2016 to record at least two assists in a single game.

2. Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets. Even with a makeshift defense the Jets are still doing their best to hang around in the Western Conference and picked up a big win on Friday night against Vancouver, beating the Canucks, 4-1. While Kyle Connor had a goal and an assist to help drive the offense, Hellebuyck was the Jets' big star by making 32 saves including a desperation glove save on Bo Horat to help protect the lead late in the third period.

3. Mikko Koskinen, Edmonton Oilers. A clean sweep for goalies when it comes to the stars of the night as Koskinen turned aside all 26 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over the New Jersey Devils. It is his first shutout of the season, improved his record to 6-1-1 in eight appearances, and pushed his save percentage for the season over .920. The goaltending being a pleasant surprise has been a huge part of the Oilers' early success this season.

Other notable performances from Friday

  • Leon Draisaitl extended his current point streak to eight consecutive games when he opened the scoring for Oilers in the first period, scoring on a breakaway for his 14th goal of the season. More on that below, including a look at the goal.
  • Fabbri took advantage of his first opportunity with the Red Wings by scoring two goals. Read more about it here.
  • Nikita Kucherov, Alex Killorn, and Yanni Gourde all scored goals for the Tampa Bay Lightning as they started to regain some of their swagger in a win over the Buffalo Sabres in the Global Series. Read all about that game here.

Highlights of the Night

This is Bernier's highlight reel save on Pastrnak that was mentioned above, by far his best save of the night.

Speaking of great saves, here is Hellebucyk's game-saving stop on Horvat in Winnipeg.

Draisaitl gets behind the Devils' defense and scores his 14th goal of the season, making it look easy.

Blooper of the Night

It was not as costly as the 3-on-0 they gave up in overtime against the St. Louis Blues earlier this week, but the Canucks again literally fell over themselves to set up an easy goal for their opponents. This was an empty-netter by the Jets to put the game away, once somebody decided to actually put the puck in the net.

Factoids

  • Pastrnak is up to 31 points in 16 games, making him just the sixth different Bruins player in the past 25 years to do that. [NHL PR]
  • Draisaitl is the first Oilers player in 20 years to score 14 goals in the team's first 18 games. [NHL PR]
  • The Jets have won nine games in a row against the Canucks. They have outscored them 31-10 in those games. [NHL PR]
  • Fabbri is just the seventh Red Wings player to ever score two goals in his debut with the team. [NHL PR]
  • Sam Reinhart scored both goals for the Sabres in their 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay, making him the third Sabres player to score multiple goals in a game played outside of North America. Yes, two other Sabres (Thomas Vanek and Luke Adam) have done that. [NHL PR]

Scores

Tampa Bay Lightning 3, Buffalo Sabres 2
Detroit Red Wings 4, Boston Bruins 2
Winnipeg Jets 4, Vancouver Canucks 1
Edmonton Oilers 4, New Jersey Devils 0

Singaporean tourists injured in Batam bridge collapse during photo session - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 08:05 PM PST

A wooden bridge at Montigo Resort in Nongsa, Batam, collapsed on Thursday afternoon while some 30 tourists from Singapore were on it for a photo session.

Eighteen of the visitors suffered injuries in the accident, including broken bones after they fell into the sea below, Riau Islands Police reported on Friday.

Riau Islands Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Saptono Erlangga said the supporting beams of one part of the bridge was weak.

"There were 30 people at one point of the bridge, and it collapsed and over a dozen fell," Erlangga said.

Thirteen of the injured were treated at Bhayangkara Police Hospital, while five people who suffered minor injuries were treated at the resort's clinic. Two of the injured had broken bones and were flown to a hospital in Singapore.

"All the injured victims were Singaporean nationals who were on holiday at the resort," Erlangga said.

A total of 120 Singaporeans were in the area at the time.

The police have questioned four people from the resort management in their investigation.

Montigo Resort spokesperson, Purwono, told The Jakarta Post that they could not provide any comment at the moment. "We will send a press release later," he said.

The Straits Times quoted a statement from Singaporean community self-help group Mendaki that 26 of its members were injured in the bridge collapse.

18 Singaporeans injured after bridge collapses at Montigo Resorts in Batam - International Business Times, Singapore Edition

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 07:35 PM PST

Indonesian police confirmed that there were 18 Singaporeans among 26 victims who suffered injuries after a bridge in a Batam hotel collapsed on Thursday afternoon, November 7. As per the reports, 15 of them Singapore citizens were taken to the hospital, while other three people received immediate treatment at the scene in Montigo Resorts Nongsa, north of Batam.

Colonel S. Erlangga, the Riau Islands provincial police spokesman said that "The wooden foundations of the bridge have probably decayed, leading to its collapse." As reported by Detik.com he mentioned that there are two victims among those 15 Singaporeans who suffered from serious injuries. It should be also noted that some of the victims of this tragic incident were taking pictures when the bridge collapsed at around 4 pm on Thursday.

As per a local hospital staff, one of the victims probably had a fractured bone in the right foot and another person suffered a bone fracture in the ribs. Meanwhile. Police started their investigation at the resort and interviewed eyewitnesses. Three employees of the resort are being questioned in relation to the incident at the Barelang Police Criminal Investigation, reported Batam Tribune, including Chief of Security and Manager of Montigo Resort.

It should be mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore was notified about the bridge collapse incident and officers from the Consulate-General in Batam are at the hospital to offer their assistance.

Katana Nelson’s second-half goal moves Hershey field hockey to 3A semifinals - PennLive

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 06:42 PM PST

REIFFTON – Once Katana Nelson controlled a timely pass from teammate Ashley Arnold, a bit of technique and a whole lot of attitude kicked in.

Hershey certainly needed the boost as Nelson's rush and goal early in the second half propelled the Trojans' to another victory inside the PIAA Class 3A tournament.

Nelson's goal past Easton Area keeper Danielle Swallow split a 1-all deadlock and eventually allowed the Trojans to secure a 2-1 triumph over the District 11 runner-up at Don Thomas Stadium.

The Trojans (18-6) spent the final 28 minutes fending off the Red Rovers (20-5), representing the more aggressive side in the initial 30 minutes.

While the early action hardly impressed Hershey coach Bri Price, a pep talk at halftime paid dividends in the tense quarterfinal.

The win set up another showdown with crosstown rival Lower Dauphin for the right to return to the PIAA Championship round. The defending-champion Trojans and Lower Dauphin will meet Tuesday at a site and time to be announced.

"We just weren't playing our game. We weren't playing Hershey hockey," said Price, whose club opened the scoring via Shealyn Tatara's post midway through the first half.

"We were playing very timid and we weren't staying on our marks. They were beating us to the majority of balls and that is why I wasn't happy. That is in our control. Hustle, you can control that. Beating people to the ball, you can control that."

Tatara's goal, off an Ashley Arnold assist, did deliver a lead, but Easton responded quickly to pull even.

Wired after taking out Plymouth-Whitemarsh in Tuesday's opening round – the win signaled Easton's first to the PIAA quarterfinals since 1989 – the Rovers got on the board when senior forward Riley McDonald found the back of the cage with 10:52 left.

Later, McDonald got a good look at Nelson's surge and stickwork right after the break.

"I was just over the 25. Obviously, the ball went by all of us. It wasn't like it got past one person," said McDonald on Arnold's outlet.

"We all had a chance to stop the ball, so it definitely was hard to see that ball go into the goal when all of us were so close to it. But, you have to keep playing."

The Rovers secured the majority of their 10 corners in the final 30 minutes but only managed three shots overall. Hershey keeper Macy Andres made a pair of saves.

Nelson nearly struck again at the 22-mark with another breakaway. Swallow, who stopped four of six shots by Hershey, rushed out of goal to make the save.

Price applauded Hershey's junior class, which includes Nelson, Arnold and Kylie Wall, all key contributors with top talent and Northwestern recruit Maddie Zimmer (ACL) out.

"I think our junior class has really stepped up in that role. They are getting more comfortable with one another now," Price said. "I think we're at a really good place right now."

And one more scrap with Lower Dauphin?

"It's always a battle with them. I think both teams, whenever we play each other, we bring out the best hockey that each team has," said Price. "We're going to get prepared for that game and we're looking forward to it."

Olivia Watson chipped in an assist on McDonald's goal.

"A loss is a loss. I do think the score shows how far we've come this season," McDonald said. "The fact that we made it this far to compete against a team like Hershey. We had a chance to beat them. We didn't, but I think the score reflects how far we've come this season."

Reece James rattled Wilfried Zaha to prove the Chelsea star is not your average teenager - Football.London

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 06:08 PM PST

At just 19 years of age and up against one of the best wingers in the Premier League, it could have been a nervous afternoon for Reece James.

The right-back was starting his very first Premier League match and it was potentially a risky option to leave club captain Cesar Azpilicueta on the bench.

The Spaniard has been a constant presence for the Blues over the past few seasons, and while he struggled at the beginning of the campaign, his form was on the up.

But Frank Lampard hasn't been shy of making the brave decisions, and with Wilfried Zaha lining up on the left of the Crystal Palace, Lampard went for James to face him.

Pace for pace, that was maybe a wise decision. But at 26 and years of league and international experience behind him, would Zaha have too much?

It couldn't have been anything different.

From the very beginning, Zaha knew that he was in for a tough afternoon, with James keeping tracks on him wherever he went.

Video Loading

But this wasn't the performance of a mindless teenager being suckered into the moves of a more intelligent, tricky winger.

There was a method to his tactic, and without the space to play, Zaha, Palace's biggest threat, wasn't even close to making an impact.

In one particular moment in the first half, Zaha looked like he might get away, but James timed a perfect sliding challenge to take the ball away from him.

It was James' intelligence and battling ability that eventually claimed the one-on-one battle with his opponent.

Zaha has the potential to be wound up if things are not going his way. A player who wears his heart on his sleeve, and he is usually the better for that.

But on occasions, you could tell that James was getting under his skin.

The moment that really caught the eye was when James and Zaha went chest-to-chest in the second half.

Zaha wasn't very happy with a James tackle, something that the winger felt should have got a yellow card from referee Mike Dean.

But nothing came from it and James wasn't happy that the Palace man had tried to get him booked. There were a few words exchanged between the two, but in the end it was James who certainly had the upper hand.

The 19-year-old had rattled the winger, a player who is struggling for form right now but, on his day, can be as dangerous as anyone in the league.

"I thought Reece was fantastic against one of the best wingers in the league one-v-one," Lampard said after the 2-0 victory.

"A real threat and on the counter-attack. Reece dealt with most of those situations and he also joined in the attack.

"You can see how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet and his delivery and passing so I was pleased. I trust in Reece and out of all of the younger players who have been getting his chance this year, he has had his injury earlier in the season. He has got fit that little bit later but he has been training at a level and coming on at a level where he deserves his minutes today. He did brilliantly."

So what now? Does Azpilicueta come back in for Manchester City or does James keep his place?

With the attacking threat of City way outweighing that of Palace today, experience might well have to take priority over youthful exuberance.

Azpilicueta, a regular, might well have been shocked by the omission, but Lampard insisted that he would only have been happy to watch the youngster shine.

"It is part of my job [the tough decisions]," Lampard said. "It would be a tougher call if I was speaking to Azpilicueta when he is having a difficult time and I am bringing a kid in to say this is a decision I am making. It is actually a decision where Azpilicueta is playing really well for us.

"He is a leader and a driver but Reece and the way he is playing I thought with the opportunity to give him minutes in a game today was one I had to take. It gives me options going forward. Azpi is such a great personality and character that he is easy to speak to. He feels for the club and wants the best that shows how much I value him now and going forward.

"It might give me some selection problems going forward for sure but I want the best for the team squad for what we can do. It is a nice problem for me going forward."

James was lauded in the Championship last season for his performances, and he has had to wait his turn, after injury, to get his opportunities in the Premier League.

But if this is the benchmark, then it is a very, very bright future indeed.

Batam pier collapse a result of 'overcapacity': Montigo Resorts - CNA

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 05:50 PM PST

BATAM: The incident involving a Batam resort pier which collapsed and injured 26 Singaporeans took place due to "overcapacity", Montigo Resorts said in a statement on Friday (Nov 8).

"This is an unfortunate incident which was a result of overcapacity of 30 pax at a concentrated area of the bridge when the bridge was meant to be a casual transient passage," a statement from the public relations firm for the resort said.

"Findings from the preliminary investigation show that unlike previously reported, the legs and foundation remain intact."

The statement did not say how many people the structure could support.

The pier was serviced this year and undergoes routine checks regularly, the statement said, adding that more checks and a full investigation are ongoing.

"In the meantime, warning signs have been placed near the accident zone," it stated. "Separately, a full repair will be done to ensure that the bridge is even more robust for the safety of guests."

When CNA visited the pier in the resort premises on Friday, it had been cordoned off by yellow police tape, with a resort sign apologising for the inconvenience caused.

The collapsed section was covered with white canvas, while a few wooden planks could be seen in the water.

Business at the resort was going on as usual, with guests seen blowing balloons in preparation for a team building event. Staff said the resort was fully booked for the day.

"The management of Montigo Resorts Nongsa is cooperating with the local authorities and police on the incident," the statement said.

"They apologise for any inconvenience caused and are looking into all the well-being of their guests during this time."

According to the resort statement, more than 30 hotel guests were taking group photos on the structure when it collapsed, after which about 26 fell into "the shallow part of the sea".

"The affected were sent to the hospital by the resort immediately, and were attended to with the necessary medical checks," it said.

"Except for two guests, one who sustained ankle fracture and another who had a rib fracture, the rest were discharged immediately.

"The two injured guests are now discharged after an overnight observation yesterday."

The Singaporeans injured in the incident were employees of self-help group Yayasan MENDAKI.

Every word Frank Lampard said on Chelsea's win, Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic - Football.London

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 05:50 PM PST

Satisfied with the performance?

"Yeah. Every game in the Premier League is hard, particularly against a team as organised as Palace. I thought we started the first half really well. A goal would probably have put us in a really good position. We didn't get it, we allowed the tempo to drop slightly towards the end of the half but when we came out in the second half with the intent that we did and the extra 10% of urgency in our game, we won the game.

"I say comfortably, the two goals were relatively comfortable but there could have probably been more with a bit more end product but it was a nice solid win with a clean sheet."

What does it say about Tammy struggling in the first half and then scoring?

"It says he needs to be better in the first half. I suppose with Tammy in some games, he's a striker and there are games in the PL that will frustrate you because good defenders won't give you much space behind and then maybe not in front because their midfield are in front. It's a problem to solve and as you say he was quite quiet but if you look at any top striker you expect a lot.

"You expect everything: goals, hold-up, run behind, etc. it's not always possible but you need to do it, stay in the game, stay bright and lively and keep trying and keep running, which he did. And he gets his goal, which he takes very clinically, so a great game from Tammy, even if it might not be his best game in the showreel. When you think about tough games and you get the goal that puts you in front to win the gme, that's just as important."

Pulisic, his performances now vindication of the way he was dealt with before?

"I don't think it is vindication, I think it is more that Christian came from another league and didn't have a great break, et cetera. He played some games early on and the pace of the Premier League is tough for anyone to improve in the game. But with Christian I always believed that he has huge talent and will be a big player for us and he has shown that.

"I thought he was first class today. His energy, movement of the ball, slipping past people, moving passed people and the quality of getting in areas again, scoring in and around the six-yard box. I think is a huge thing for any wide player. The only frustration is he comes off with a bit of an injury. He was going to be subbed off before he got his goal, he has got a bit of a hip issue. I am hoping it's not too bad because the way that he is in full flow at the minute is great to see."

Was today more of a learning curve instead of Ajax? To control a game?

"Yeah I think so, we expected that today as well, which is good because we passed that test. We have had a few teams come here and be difficult to break down, Newcastle being one recently. Brighton, these teams, it is a test of not only how can you unlock the door and change a game up with movement, passing or taking people out of the game with the ball at your feet, it is also can you switch on to make sure you don't get the sucker punch.

"A team like Palace are absolutely set up to do something like that, with Zaha and Townsend etc. As an all round game, as much joy as you can get out of the win and the goals you can get joy out of Zouma and Tomori, and the discipline of the midfield in front of them. So I was really delighted with the game management I suppose of a game like today."

Reece James, delighted with his performance against Zaha?

"Yes, I thought Reece was fantastic against one of the best wingers in the league one-v-one. A real threat and on the counter-attack.

He did brilliantly.

Tough to tell Azpilicueta he wasn't starting?

"It is part of my job. It would be a tougher called if I was speaking to Azpilicueta when he is having a difficult time and I am bringing a kid in to say this is a decision I am making.

A great run with six Premier League wins, exceeding expectations?

"I don't know. It is hard with the expectations at the start of the season was belief in the younger players because I felt they deserved a chance but there's always a question mark that you don't know until you see them there.

"There's that first hurdle when you see the bounce when they come in and then they have to sustain that. At the moment they are sustaining with Tammy, Mason, Fikayo and Reece who has just come in there.

"When you look at the younger players they are showing they deserve to be at this level. I am proud of the squad that we have got but I also realise it is just a snapshot in what is the big picture of the long term future here. It is a relative snapshot of the season, we are about a third of the way through and we are in a good position but we know this league can punish you if you drop off.

"So we need to get even better than that. If we want to build something over a long period of time here then we have got so much improvement to do because the gap was too big last year between us and the top two. So we want to close that."

Batam bridge collapse: 26 Singaporeans from MENDAKI injured during company retreat - CNA

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 05:20 PM PST

BATAM: Twenty-six Singaporeans, all employees of self-help group Yayasan MENDAKI, were injured after a wooden pier collapsed at Montigo Resorts on the Indonesian island of Batam, the organisation confirmed on Friday (Nov 8).

The staff members were on a company retreat to discuss work plans for the upcoming year, MENDAKI said.

On Thursday, tourists were taking photos on the 70m-long pier at the resort when the middle section of the pier collapsed. More than 30 people fell into the ocean, Riau police official Erlangga had said.

The injured included the 26 MENDAKI employees, all Singaporean. Earlier reports said that 18 Singaporeans were injured.

"Twenty-four employees had light injuries and were discharged as outpatients. Two employees will seek further medical care in Singapore," MENDAKI said, adding that the next-of-kin of those injured had been contacted.

A spokesperson from Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said earlier on Friday: "We are aware of the incident. Officers from the Consulate-General in Batam are at Bhayangkara Hospital to render consular assistance."

INJURED SINGAPOREANS ON THEIR WAY BACK

At least four Singaporeans who were injured were on a ferry back to Singapore on Friday.

Two of the injured were seen by CNA on stretchers at the departure area of the Nongsapura ferry terminal in Batam. Another two were in wheelchairs. There were also two ambulances outside the terminal.

Ferry terminal staff confirmed that the two on stretchers were Singaporeans injured in the incident, and that they were due to take the 9am (10am Singapore time) ferry back to Singapore's Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

"They were accompanied by doctors," the staff member, who declined to be named, told CNA.

Over the next half an hour, dozens of tourists disembarked from three tour buses - one with a Montigo Resorts logo - and headed straight to the Batam Fast ferry ticket counter.

Among them were a man and a woman in wheelchairs. A representative from Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs greeted them as they disembarked.

"I think we are all okay," one woman in the group told CNA. "It is a shock, of course. When a bridge falls, you will be shocked. Otherwise, we are all okay."

Two other tourists declined to comment. A man who was on his computer seemingly handling administrative tasks said: "We were advised not to speak to the media."

Editor's Note: Initial reports on the incident referred to the collapsed structure as a bridge. This story has been updated to correctly describe it as a pier.
