Huawei Loses Out As Trump And China Agree New ‘Phase One’ Trade Deal - Forbes Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:40 PM PST ![]() LightRocket via Getty Images There has long been speculation that the ongoing blacklisting of Chinese tech giant Huawei might be used as a pawn in the trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing. Now, with a "phase one" deal being put in place, is there likely to be any relief for Huawei as it continues to work around the supply chain restrictions that have been in place since it was added to the Entity List in May? The short answer is no, at least not directly or immediately. And so the longer answer is that it's actually more complicated than that. An initial trade deal agreedThe deal agreed on December 13 looks set to significantly ease tensions between the U.S. and China. At least for now. As reported by the Washington Post, Trump's team "characterized the deal as 'amazing' and 'historic'," while officials in Beijing "held a rare news conference to emphasize this deal was a win for them." The first stage agreement trades U.S. tariff reliefs for China purchasing some $200 billion in U.S. goods alongside an easing of market restrictions for U.S. firms. No immediate relief for HuaweiBut for Huawei there is no direct impact from what has been agreed thus far. The company's inclusion on the Entity List stems from security concerns relating to its alleged links to the Chinese state and the likelihood it will collect intelligence if asked. All of those allegations have been denied, but they remain front and centre in the ongoing U.S. campaign to restrict the Chinese company's business around the world. In truth, though, the company has seen some softening on the restrictions it worries most about in recent weeks. Although the headlines have focused on Huawei's new legal action against the U.S. over the FTC's clampdown on rural U.S. carriers using federal grants to buy Huawei equipment, for Huawei the numbers involved there are modest. For the Chinese tech giant, the real concern is an easing on restrictions impacting the company's smartphone business ahead of 2020 product launches and a softening of the intense campaign to persuade international governments to block its access to their 5G deployments. The U.S. Commerce Department has recently started issuing long-awaited licenses to U.S. companies to restore supplier arrangements with Huawei, and with Microsoft already a beneficiary, all eyes are now on Google. The loss of Google from Huawei's new smartphone models has become the poster-child of the blacklisting, generating significantly more headlines than anything else. As I have commented before, all eyes are now on whether Google will be restored to Huawei's new line-up in time for the launch of the P40 Pro in 2020, which may be announced as soon as Mobile World Congress in February. But it's complicatedAnd so, while there is no direct impact from the initial trade agreement, it will ease tensions enough, Huawei will hope, that the restoration of further suppliers—like Google—where there are no national security concerns becomes more likely. The company has committed to Android for its forthcoming new devices, and does not want to continue to struggle in international markets where consumers expect those devices to come installed with the full suite of Google staples. The coming weeks will be critical for Huawei, as we watch to see whether the company can provide the resolution it needs to its smartphone software line-up for 2020. It will be disappointed to miss out on being a direct beneficiary of the phase one deal, but will also be hopeful that the initial trade deal ushers in some relief in short order. That said, there remains significant political resistance in the U.S. to any easing of restrictions, as evidenced by the reaction to the positive 5G news for Huawei in Germany and Spain and the much more negative news in Norway, as Europe divides into those markets willing to defy U.S. warnings and those that are not. One Million Sold: The Galaxy Fold Phenomenon - TechPP Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:10 PM PST Update: News is coming in that Samsung might not have sold a million units of the Galaxy Fold after all. We are waiting for official confirmation in this regard. That said, even half a million units would be an impressive figure, given the price of the product and its initial travails. Though it would not really be quite in the league of one million. We will keep you updated in this regard. Earlier: It came. That's the story of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The device which many had predicted would kick start a foldable revolution got off to the worst start possible when it was first launched earlier this year. Reviewer after reviewer ripped into the device – some did so literally, peeling off the display itself by mistake because it seemed so flimsy. Nothing seemed to be going right for the foldable display pioneer – it was not well designed, it had a crease down the middle and even its interface took a hammering. In short, it was handed those three letters product managers have nightmares about. DOA. (Dead on Arrival) That should have been the end of the Galaxy Fold. Fast forward to today, however, and the device has sold over a million units. That might not sound too many when one considers the sort of numbers the iPhone and its own cousins, the S10 series have run-up, but then consider the fact that this was a device that was a polished prototype at best. Consider the fact that it came off a truckload of negative coverage. Consider the fact that it was perhaps the least mainstream of all phones released this year. Last but not least: consider the fact that the Galaxy Fold cost almost two thousand dollars. Let's stay with that point for a while now. A million units at around two thousand dollars add up to revenues of two billion dollars. That's in the vicinity of what The Avengers: Infinity War made all over the world with rave reviews, crazy levels of hype, and an array of superstars. Oh, and WITHOUT a first version of the film that crashed and burned! Samsung is becoming an expert at surviving disasters that would have rattled lesser brands. A few years ago, a series of exploding Galaxy Note devices had it on the ropes, but today the Galaxy Note is back to being one of the world's favorite Android flagships. In that case, Samsung had perhaps taken a bit too long to withdraw the faulty device, but in the case of the Fold, it moved swiftly. It not only withdrew the devices but did not try to faff its way out of the crisis. Instead, the brand worked on improving the Fold and fixing some of the errors that had plagued its first edition. Most importantly, it did not try to build any hype around the second coming of the device. When the Galaxy Fold made its second appearance, it, therefore, came almost as a bit of a surprise to some, who had thought that it had been consigned to the tech rubbish dump. What's more, this time there was not much hype. Indeed, if anything, Samsung was careful to play down any extravagant expectations people would have of the device, placing a number of warnings on the device about its use, and exhorting experts to be careful while using it. Unlike the first Fold which had come out with all guns blazing, claiming to change our world, the second almost admitted from the outset that it was a delicate darling and needed careful handling. This cleverly reduced expectations on the one front which was the device's Achilles Heel – its build, which remained on the fragile side. It resulted in most reviewers being more forgiving in general as well. It was not all smooth sailing, though. Some reviewers were miffed that in many cases, the brand also limited the time reviewers would get to spend with the device (sometimes to as little as a couple of days – for the record, most reviewers take 10-14 days to review a high-end device), a move that was seen by some as an attempt to ensure that no reviewer got to know the device too well, but which the brand's executives insisted was because of a paucity of units of a very expensive device. Whatever the truth, the fact is that many did not object to this restriction. All in all, media coverage of the Fold in its second coming was largely favorable – many pundits did not even fuss about the crease down the middle of the device when it was opened. It was treated as a super expensive prototype that was available for sale, rather than as a finished product. Which is perhaps how it should have been treated all along. Samsung's decision to withdraw the Fold from the market the first time around also had another unexpected benefit – it deterred many of its competitors from coming out with their own foldable devices, thus leaving the field relatively open. As a result, the Galaxy Fold did not have any real competition to go up against even when it was re-released a few months after its disastrous debut. Which again resulted in the media being more patient with it. Of course, all this has resulted in more than a million people using the Galaxy Fold today. This is a staggering achievement for a device that not only had a disastrous opening but which even the most positive reviewers have insisted is still not quite the finished product. There were many who had insisted that the product was too expensive and buggy and would not have many takers. But then they had said that about the Moto RAZR and the iPhone too (I was one of them, and have still not got all the egg off my face). It is too early to predict whether the Galaxy Fold will become as iconic a device as those two worthies, or even if it will unleash a future full of foldables. But what we do know is that thanks to some very good engineering, and some even better marketing from Samsung, it has made one of the most amazing comebacks in recent tech history. And put many tech pundits who wrote it off altogether in the category of Jon Snow. They know nothing. Actress Sally Field arrested during climate change protest in DC - TheBlaze Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:47 PM PST ![]() Hollywood star Sally Field, 73, was arrested outside the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., on Friday, as part of fellow actress Jane Fonda's weekly protest against climate change. What are the details?Photos and a video of Field's arrest show the actress appearing to celebrate being zip-tied and led away by U.S. Capitol police, after she marched during the so-called "Fire Drill Fridays" movement while carrying a banner pushing for The Green New Deal. Prior to Field's arrest, she spoke under an umbrella in the rain to a gathering of fellow activists, saying, "I come with my heart and my voice. I am a mother. I am a grandmother. The time is now!" Fox News reported. "We cannot sit back in our comfort zones on our couches, and wonder, 'What can we do?'" Field continued. "We can get out. We can do something in the rain, whatever it takes. I've been learning. I have been trying to learn. I, like everyone else, feel this is such a big problem. How can we ever accomplish anything? But we can!" Field added, "People can transition to a better job, a greener job in a workplace that can support them and their families in more than a living wage." Fonda, for her part, has been arrested several times since October, when she began attending the weekly Friday protests outside the Capitol. However, The Hollywood Reporter noted that after a number of detainments Fonda "had to keep her distance because she faced a longer stay behind bars as her charges kept increasing." Fonda, 81, has been a liberal activist for decades. She earned the nickname "Hanoi Jane" after she posed affectionately for a photo with enemy troops during the Vietnam War while Americans died. In recent years, she has apologized for the image, telling the Frederick News Post in 2015, "It hurts me and it will to my grave that I made a huge, huge mistake that made a lot of people think I was against the soldiers." Anything else?Field isn't the only big name to be arrested in recent months while joining in on Fonda's weekly D.C. demonstrations. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "other stars arrested with her include Ted Danson, Diane Lane, Piper Perabo and Sam Waterson." As the uncertain politics of the effort to remove Trump from office collide with critical year-end legislative deadlines, Washington, for the first time in recent memory, appears intent on demonstrating its capacity to multitask. Lawmakers and White House officials are eager to project the image that they've been focused on anything but the polarizing proceedings that are increasingly consuming their days and nights. Even President Donald Trump, no stranger to unpredictability and drama, could only marvel at the week of Washington whiplash. "This has been a wild week," he said Friday morning as he played host to the president of Paraguay in the Oval Office. On Friday, as the House Judiciary Committee was taking the historic step of passing articles of impeachment against the president. Trump had counter-programming at the ready, announcing new progress on long-delayed negotiations with China to tame an 18-month trade war. "Take note @SpeakerPelosi - this is what real leadership looks like," tweeted White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, highlighting the "phase-one" deal. It was far from the first split-screen moment of the week. In the span of one hour Tuesday, Pelosi held a press conference to announce articles of impeachment against the president — then swiftly walked down the hall to announce a bipartisan deal to fulfill the president's top legislative priority of the year, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade. A day later, as the House Judiciary Committee took up the impeachment articles, the full House passed a compromise defense spending bill that would provide federal employees with 12 weeks of paid parental leave, a priority of the president's daughter. The bill also would bring Trump's long-promised Space Force to life. The incongruous moments reflect the unease on all sides in Washington about how the polarizing impeachment process will play out politically — and the fact that many voters across the country don't view impeachment as a high priority. So Democrats and the White House are going all-out to show they can do their day jobs despite the impeachment drama on TV. Washington is set for more of those moments in the coming week, with the anticipated party-line impeachment vote Wednesday sandwiched between Tuesday's expected passage of a budget bill and Thursday's thumbs-up for the USMCA. For Pelosi, the decision to give the president those victories appeared aimed at trying to protect her caucus against charges — featured prominently in GOP ads aimed at vulnerable Democrats — that their focus on impeachment has distracted from the bread-and-butter issues that voters care about. Democrats maintain that the issues they've made progress on are long-held priorities, like the new parental leave policy for federal employees and stronger labor and environmental protections in the USMCA. "It's not a coincidence that the USMCA agreement was announced the same morning that the articles of impeachment were introduced," said Alex Conant, a Republican strategist and partner at Firehouse Strategies, which has been polling how impeachment is playing in crucial battleground states. "I think congressional Democrats in swing districts want to be able to show their constituents that they've done more than just impeach the president." Conant said he expects to see a concerted effort by moderate Democrats to find areas where they can work with Trump, even while they're impeaching him. "It's counter-intuitive, but impeachment may actually help the president's legislative agenda," he said. Pelosi tied the flurry of legislative activity amid impeachment to the calendar, telling reporters: "It's just that as we get to the end of a session, there have to be some decisions made. The timetable for impeachment is the timetable of the committees and that came to an end with a hearing yesterday." The spurt of bipartisan legislating hasn't necessarily led to any cooling of political tempers. At the White House, Trump aides highlighted what they called a "week of action," aiming to use it as a cudgel against Democrats whom they have accused of doing nothing besides impeachment. Trump's campaign is already planning to include the developments in new ads promoting the president making good on his 2016 campaign promises while Democrats seek his removal. "One can make the argument that President Trump has had the best seven-day run of his presidency despite having two articles of impeachment dropped on him, and that is nothing short of remarkable," said Jason Miller, a staunch supporter of the president who served as communications director of his 2016 campaign. The Trump narrative conveniently leaves out Democrats' significant roles in securing many of the week's achievements. "As we have said since the Do-Nothing Democrats started this kangaroo court, President Donald J. Trump remains focused on the work of the American people, and this week's unprecedented accomplishments prove that," said White House spokesman Judd Deere. Conant said the White House was intent on making the argument that "you shouldn't impeach a president who is doing a good job." Posted: 13 Dec 2019 09:46 PM PST ![]() Last December, 25-year-old Patrick Kaple saw an article with the headline, "An Ohio Man Ate 400 Skyline Chili Coney Dogs This Year and is Somehow Still Alive." This headline inspired Kaple to eat at least twice as many coneys in a year. He settled on trying to eat 1,000 coneys by Dec. 31, 2019. He plans to eat his 1,000th coney on Dec. 15. "I wanted to put to rest the idea that you could die from eating coneys," Kaple said. Kaple grew up in Norwalk, Ohio – a city between Cleveland and Toledo – but ended up graduating from Xavier University, like his dad and brother. "Even though we didn't live in Cincinnati, the Cincinnati heritage was ingrained in me and my family," he said. To complete his goal of eating 1,000 coneys, he has tried to eat at least 80 per month. In a good month, he ate 100. "The Clifton and Oakley Skylines are my two favorites based on service," Kaple said. "Everyone is very friendly." His usual order is 3-4 coneys without onions if he's getting the order to go because he says the onions get weird. Kaple has kept track of his journey on Twitter under the handle @1kconey. He posts pictures of the coneys he eats and uses the account to help him keep track of how many he's had. Even Skyline officials have followed along, sending Kaple swag occasionally for days such as, "National Coney Day." His family and friends have all been supportive, except his girlfriend. "I didn't get her approval before I did it, but she's finally coming around," Kaple said. "As punishment, next year we are running 1,000 miles. Not my choice." Kaple says he has not seen a noticeable physical change, even though he doesn't exercise. Skyline Chili isn't the only Cincinnati Chili that Kaple loves. "Blue Ash Chili is my favorite because of the fried jalapenos. They completely change the flavor profile of a coney," Kaple said. "Pleasant Ridge Chili has some insane menu items, and it's open until 4 a.m. "I'll keep eating coneys after this is over. Not at the rate I have been, but maybe once or twice a week." Kaple estimates that he's spent at least $2,300 at Skyline in the past year. Said Kaple: "It was money well-spent." Posted: 13 Dec 2019 09:31 PM PST Milwaukee has 5G. AT&T announced that Milwaukee was one of its first markets to have a 5G network in a news release Friday. A 5G device and a compatible plan are needed to use 5G service. Everyone else will have to wait. "I'm thrilled that our customers in the Milwaukee area get to be among the first to experience AT&T 5G," Scott VanderSanden, president, AT&T Wisconsin, said in the release. "We plan to rapidly expand our coverage and we're on track to offer nationwide AT&T 5G service in the first half of 2020." AT&T did not release the initial 5G coverage area. A map shows that by February it plans to have 5G capabilities in parts of Milwaukee but not in the heart of downtown. Surrounding communities to the west and north will also gain 5G by February, according to the map. The advanced wireless network is accessed using 5G enabled devices. AT&T said customers with LTE devices in Milwaukee will benefit from upgrades made while adding the 5G network. Dallas-based AT&T has also rolled out 5G in Birmingham, Alabama; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Pittsburgh; Providence, Rhode Island; Rochester, New York; and San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, California. U.S Cellular announced in October it would have 5G coverage available in Milwaukee early next year. Goldman is disappointed in trade deal: Tariff rollback 'smaller than expected' - CNBC Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:10 PM PST ![]() Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump at the G-20 Summit in Osaka on June 29, 2019. Brendan Smialowsi | AFP | Getty Images Amid a slew of headlines and tweets, a long-awaited phase one trade deal between the U.S. and China has finally been agreed upon. However, Goldman Sachs is not so happy about it. As part of the limited deal, the U.S. said it will maintain 25% tariffs on approximately $250 billion of Chinese imports while reducing tariffs on $120 billion in products to 7.5%. The rollback in duties is "smaller than expected," according to Goldman's chief economist Jan Hatzius. "The reduction is only half as large as our baseline assumption," Hatzius said in a note. "There is still some uncertainty regarding the status of this agreement, as it appears once again that some technical and legal details are still in flux." U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the two sides hope to sign the deal in the first week of January in Washington. He also cautioned the Trump administration has not promised a future rollback of tariffs, adding it would be wise to be skeptical on whether China would deliver on certain agreements. The representative also said in a statement Friday the deal addresses "intellectual property, technology transfer, agriculture, financial services, and currency and foreign exchange" and "includes a commitment by China that it will make substantial additional purchases of U.S. goods and services in the coming years." "Neither U.S. nor Chinese officials have been specific about what the reforms are, nor has there been any detail provided regarding the size of Chinese agriculture purchases from the U.S.," Hatzius said. Chinese officials said Beijing will increase agricultural purchases significantly without specifying by how much. Meanwhile, Lighthizer said China pledged to buy a total of $40 billion in agricultural products. Those purchases will be made over a two-year period, according to National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow. While still short on details, many analysts said the deal is positive for stocks as it could boost business confidence and that should spill over to more investment spending and higher corporate profits. — CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed reporting. Earliest known hunting scene uncovered in cave painting - ITV News Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:10 PM PST ![]() A 44,000-year-old cave painting discovered in Indonesia is believed to be the earliest known hunting scene to be uncovered. The image portrays a group of part-human, part-animal figures – therianthropes – hunting large mammals with spears or ropes. The team of archaeologists, led by Griffith University in Australia, who made the find say it sheds new light on the origin of modern human cognition. Published in the Nature journal, their paper describes the ancient painting in a limestone cave on Sulawesi as our oldest known rock art. The figurative depiction of hunters as therianthropes may also be the oldest evidence for our ability to imagine the existence of supernatural beings. Prehistoric cave art provides some of the most direct insight available into the earliest storytelling. The Upper Palaeolithic cave art of Europe – around 21,000 to 14,000 years ago – encompasses the oldest images previously known of humans and animals interacting in recognisable scenes. Professor Maxime Aubert, Associate Professor Adam Brumm and colleagues used Uranium-series analysis to date a 14ft 9in (4.5m) wide rock art panel as at least 44,000 years old. The monochromal paintings appear to show human-like figures hunting six animals – two pigs and four dwarf buffaloes. At least eight small human-like figures with spears or ropes appear with the animals. According to the researchers, both the human-like figures and animals were painted at the same time, in the same artistic style, using the same technique and dark red pigment. They also all show similar states of weathering. The authors suggest the inclusion of therianthropes may indicate that Indonesian cave art involved religious-like thinking about the human-animal connection long before humans first made art in Europe. The researchers were led by Griffith archaeologists Prof Aubert, from the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research (GCSCR) and the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution (Arche), and Associate Prof Brumm, from Arche. Prof Aubert said: "The cave painting from Leang Bulu' Sipong 4 suggests that there was no gradual evolution of Palaeolithic art from simple to complex around 35,000 years ago – at least not in Southeast Asia. "All of the major components of a highly advanced artistic culture were present in Sulawesi by 44,000 years ago, including figurative art, scenes, and therianthropes." Associate Prof Brumm said: "The images of therianthropes at Leang Bulu' Sipong 4 may also represent the earliest evidence for our capacity to conceive of things that do not exist in the natural world, a basic concept that underpins modern religion." T-Mobile tried and failed to merge with Dish years ago, John Legere says - The Verge Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:31 PM PST ![]() T-Mobile wanted to merge with Dish back in 2015, T-Mobile CEO John Legere told a federal court yesterday, but Dish shot the deal down over concerns that T-Mobile would "disintegrate." The details, reported by CNET, confirm stories from 2015 about a potential tie-up between the two companies and explains why the deal never came to be. A merger would have given T-Mobile access to a trove of valuable spectrum that Dish has long held on to, but not yet put to use, along with a satellite TV business. Legere was in court testifying as part of a lawsuit brought by multiple state attorneys general who are attempting to block T-Mobile's merger with Sprint. Lawyers for the attorneys general asked Legere why T-Mobile had to merge with Sprint, a direct rival, as opposed to Dish, which does not currently offer cell service, according to CNET. Legere reportedly said that he had recommended that idea to T-Mobile's board in 2015, with the goal of "un-carriering" Dish's TV business, only to be shot down by Dish. For T-Mobile, there would have been major upsides to the deal. Dish has a large swath of spectrum "roughly the size of Verizon's" that could be used for LTE, Legere is reported as saying. T-Mobile would end up paying $8 billion to acquire similar spectrum two years later in an attempt to put its network on par with AT&T and Verizon. Dish's TV business also would have allowed T-Mobile to diversify and lock in subscribers, much in the way that AT&T and Verizon both offer TV service. But Dish co-founder Charlie Ergen feared T-Mobile's stock was going to drop, falling to $20 from the $25 it was at during the time of discussions, devaluing the acquisition, according to CNET. T-Mobile is currently trading at around $75 per share. The deal fell apart, and Dish stayed out of the wireless market. At least, it has until now: the company has agreed to purchase Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and more from Sprint should be merger be approved. The Department of Justice required those assets to be divested, as well as for agreements to be put in place letting Dish piggyback on T-Mobile's network for a while as part of an agreement to approve the merger. The merger's final hurdle is this trial. Attorneys general from 14 states and the District of Columbia are suing to block the deal over concerns that it would limit competition in the wireless industry. If the merger is approved, Sprint will disappear, and Dish is supposed to attempt to take its place as a major wireless competitor. If the merger is blocked, Dish would have to find a new plan to break into the business. Back in 2017, Legere predicted that Dish's end as an independent company was near. "I'd like to officially declare that Dish will die this year," he said. "By the end of 2017, Dish will not be a standalone entity." Clearly, eyes are on Dish's spectrum holdings. The question is: which company — Dish or some acquirer — will end up using them? Trump impeachment vote: What happens next? - Al Jazeera English Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:10 PM PST A key committee of the United States House of Representatives on Friday approved two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. With the historic vote, the House Judiciary Committee recommended Trump be impeached for obstruction of justice and abuse of power. The articles now go to the full House. As Democrats move forward with impeachment charges, here's what to expect next: 1. When will the full House vote?House Democratic leaders have not announced a day or time for the full House vote, but many expect it to take place next Wednesday. Impeachment in the 435-member House must be approved with a simple majority. It is unclear whether any Democrats, particularly those who are running tight re-election campaigns, will sway from their party. Still, Trump is expected to be impeached. The House would then send the articles of impeachment to the Senate for a trial. 2. What are the articles of impeachment?Articles of impeachment are formal charges. In the case of Trump, the House will consider two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Democrats accuse Trump of pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation the president's political rival and former vice president, Joe Biden, who is also a frontrunner in the 2020 Democratic presidential race. They also charge that the president obstructed their investigation by refusing to comply with subpoenas and directing members of his administration to do the same. The impeachment inquiry, launched in September following a whistle-blower complaint, was centred on a July 25 phone call during which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to open an investigation into Biden and his son, Hunter, who had served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. There has been no evidence of wrongdoing by the Bidens. Trump also wanted Zelenskyy to investigate a debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 US presidential election. At the time of the call, the Trump administration was withholding nearly $400m in Congress-approved military assistance from Ukraine. Citing testimony by current and former US officials, Democrats also accuse Trump of leveraging a White House meeting that Zelenskyy wanted in exchange for the investigations. 3. What does Trump say?Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and labelled the impeachment investigation a "witch-hunt" and "sham". He has called the July 25 phone call "perfect", and said there was not "quid pro quo" (Latin for "this for that"). "How do you get Impeached when you have done NOTHING wrong (a perfect call), have created the best economy in the history of our Country, rebuilt our military, fixed the V.A (Choice!), cut Taxes and Regs, protected your 2nd [Amendment], created Jobs, Jobs, and soooo much more? Crazy!" Trump tweeted on Friday just before the House Judiciary Committee voted on the articles of impeachment. 4. If Trump is impeached, when will the Senate hold a trial?A trial in the Republican-controlled Senate is expected in January. No date has been set, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said this week that if the House votes to impeach the president, a trial would be the Senate's "first order of business". 5. What happens during a Senate trial? The chief justice of the US Supreme Court presides over the trial. Senators consider evidence, hear witnesses and vote to acquit or convict the president. A two-thirds majority vote is required in the 100-member Senate to convict and remove a president from office. A conviction appears unlikely in the case of Trump. The Senate is made up of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the Democrats. At least 20 Republicans would have to vote with all Democrats and the two independents to remove the president. McConnell has indicated that he would like swift proceedings, but the president has said he would not mind a full trial, with testimony from a number of witnesses, including Biden and the whistle-blower, whose complaint led to the impeachment inquiry. On Wednesday, McConnell says he sees two options. "The House managers would come over, make their arguments. The president's lawyers would then respond, and at that point, the Senate has two choices," he said. "It could go down the path of calling witnesses and basically having another trial; or it could decide - and again, 51 members could make that decision - that they have heard enough and believe they know what would happen and could move to vote on the two articles of impeachment sent over to us by the House. Those are the options. No decisions have been made yet." 6. Who would become president if Trump was removed? In the unlikely event that the Senate convicts and removes Trump from office, Vice President Mike Pence would become president and complete Trump's term, which ends on January 20, 2021. European Nations Approve New Goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2050 - Yale Environment 360 Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:16 PM PST European Union leaders have agreed on a "common goal" of net-zero emissions by 2050, setting a major economic transformation, known as the European Green Deal, into motion. All but one of the EU's 28 member states approved the new 2050 target; Poland, which gets 80 percent of its electricity from coal, opted out, saying it will "reach climate neutrality at its own pace." European leaders debated the carbon neutrality goal for 10 hours at a European Council meeting in Brussels this week, The Guardian reported. The Czech Republic and Hungary were also initially against the goal until member states agreed to recognize nuclear energy as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Poland said it would reconsider joining the 2050 target at the council's meeting in June 2020. Member states also pledged to reassess the continent's 2030 climate target, hoping to up it to a 50-percent cut in emissions. "Climate neutrality by 2050 is our common goal," European Council President, Charles Michel, told reporters. "But at the same time it is correct that for one member state, at this stage, it is not possible to commit to implement this objective. It is very important for the European Union [and] the strong message today is we want to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050." The new EU commitment governs roughly 9 percent of global carbon emissions, according to Climate Home News. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed a $111 billion investment fund to help nations transition to a green economy, saying the climate challenge is Europe's "man on the moon moment," Al Jazeera reported. Von der Leyer said she plans to release the details of the new fund in January. The European Investment Bank also said it is aiming to generate $1.1 trillion for new clean energy and climate-based investment from public and private sources. Phase one U.S.-China trade deal: What Cramer and other pros are saying - CNBC Posted: 13 Dec 2019 04:40 PM PST ![]() Not a done deal. That seems to be Wall Street's consensus on the U.S. and China reaching an agreement on "phase one" of a long-awaited trade deal between the world's two largest economies. President Donald Trump also halted the next wave of tariffs that was scheduled to go into effect on Dec. 15 and rolled back some existing duties on Chinese goods. Market professionals largely welcomed the temporary reprieve this initial step towards a broader agreement would bring to the stock market as stocks seek to end the year on a positive note, with the S&P 500 on track for its best year since 2013. Here's what three of them, including CNBC's Jim Cramer, said about the agreement on Friday: Cramer, who hosts "Mad Money," wasn't convinced this meant a full-fledged trade deal was all said and done: "Let's say you're the Chinese and I'm the president. I come in and I say, 'You know what? Here's what I'll offer: I'll cut all the tariffs in half, and I won't do the December tariff.' That was not offered. And yet, in black and white, the paper says it was. That was never offered, and that's what the president is saying. Now, my experience is that when I say something was never offered and the president confirms it, it was never offered. You could say the whole thing's one big 'fake news,' but it's not. So, whatever the Chinese are saying [is] an agreement, it's not a cut in half of the tariffs. Phase rollback? We don't know what the phase is." Jeremy Siegel, Russell E. Palmer professor of finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, said the phase one deal was an end-of-year gift for markets: "Just the fact that there's a delay — we're not going to get those 25% tariffs on Dec. 15 — I think is definitely a plus for the market. It would be a bigger plus if we actually got mutual reduction on tariffs. I could see the market up 10% then. But just the delay, that uncertainty, out of the way in the immediate future I think is certainly good for another 5% on the market for the rest of this year. ... Remember, Trump did say we're very close to a deal. We may not get that reduction in tariffs. It may be contingent on them actually doing something. I do believe that this means we're not going to have that tariff ramp up on the 15th. That's going to be delayed. And I think that just that uncertainty out of the way is a bit of a Christmas present for the market going forward this month." Vincent Reinhart, chief economist and macro strategist at BNY Mellon, said the removal of negative catalysts would help take stocks higher, even as Chinese negotiators may be in a stronger position than investors think: "On the U.S. side of the table, there has been radical transparency, maybe even a little too much talk as the contestants in the White House put out their view, and so we flip just about every day. On the Chinese side, they release what they want to release when they want to release it. That gives them a competitive advantage. Another fact I like to put into the mix ... is when China was granted accession to the WTO back in 2001, it was the fifth-largest economy. It was nestled in between Germany and Italy, not looking too threatening. Now, it's the second-largest economy. It's got a big footprint on the global stage and therefore, it has some heft in negotiations. ... I think the important part about the deal is reversing some things that were bad — increasing tariffs — and taking off the table something that was going to be even worse — another increase in tariffs. So, it's the absence of a bad thing that's good for the outlook." 協力・画像提供:izu(@iz0725)さん 関連記事関連リンクCopyright © ITmedia, Inc. The British pound rose to $1.3470 from $1.3385 late Thursday but then fell back to a much less enthusiastic $1.3403 as results showed the Conservatives winning at least 363 seats in Parliament with 648 out of 650 results declared. The benchmark FTSE 100 jumped 1.5% to 7,381.34, while in Paris the CAC 40 rose 1.1% to 5,947.82. Germany's DAX advanced 1.3% to 13,397.52. U.S. shares also looked set for gains, with the future contracts for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both up 0.4%. The resounding victory for Johnson should clear the way for him to carry out his plan to take the U.K. out of the 28-nation European Union by the end of January. That's a mixed outcome for investors who loathe uncertainty but will be grappling with the repercussions of Brexit for years to come. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq set new highs on Thursday after President Donald Trump said the U.S. was getting close to a "big deal" with China. Traders were also encouraged by a Wall Street Journal report saying Washington has offered to slash existing tariffs and cancel new ones set to kick in on Sunday in exchange for more agricultural purchases and intellectual property protection. Markets have been quick to react to headlines and remarks out of the Trump administration about the 17-month trade war. China's Foreign Ministry did not confirm a deal was almost ready. Officials in Beijing instead highlighted how far apart the two sides still are. "Negotiations must be based on the principles of equality and mutual respect," said a foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, repeating Beijing's long-held position. "The deal must be mutually beneficial, a win-win." Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Wang Yi complained at a separate government-organized forum in Beijing that Washington is unfairly attacking China. "The U.S. side has successively imposed unjustified restrictions and crackdowns on China in economy and trade, science and technology and personnel exchanges," Wang said. "As far as China is concerned, what we are pursuing is our justified rights of development." Uncertainty over trade has been the biggest wildcard for stocks this year, hurting manufacturing around the world and causing U.S. businesses to hold back on making investments. The saving grace for the U.S. economy has been a strong job market and consumer spending. Speculation that the world's two biggest economies could be close to reaching an interim "Phase 1" trade agreement spurred investors on Thursday to move money into technology, industrial and other stock sectors that tend to do well when the economy is growing. On Thursday, the S&P 500 climbed 0.9% to 3,168.57, about 0.5% above its last all-time closing high, on Nov. 27. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.8% to 28,132.05, while the Nasdaq gained 0.7% to 8,717.32. The index, which is heavily weighted with technology stocks, is about 0.1% higher than its record set on Nov. 27. The Russell 2000 index of smaller company stocks climbed 0.8% to 1,644.81. Investors will get a look at new Commerce Department data Friday on U.S. retail sales in November. Economists expect retail sales rose last month. The measure gives more insight into consumer spending, which has been among the brighter spots in the economy helping to push growth. Benchmark crude oil picked up 44 cents to $59.62 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It rose 42 cents to settle at $59.18 a barrel on Thursday. Brent crude oil, the international standard, gained 60 cents to $64.80 a barrel. The dollar rose to 109.64 Japanese yen from 109.32 yen on Thursday. The euro strengthened to $1.1173 from $1.1155.
