Trump says there's light at the end of the tunnel with coronavirus vaccine and treatment research - CNBC

While the coming days in the nation's coronavirus fight look bleak, President Donald Trump gave Americans some reason to hope. "There's tremendous light at the end of the tunnel," he said at a White House press briefing Monday.

"Currently, ten different therapeutic agents are in active trials and some are looking incredibly successful," he said. "But they have to go through a process and it's going to be a quick process based on what the FDA told me." He said another 15 potential treatments are working toward clinical trials, "so they're advancing rapidly."

Trump echoed comments made earlier Monday by World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who said the research to develop vaccines and treatments to fight the coronavirus has "accelerated at incredible speed."

Tedros said more than 70 countries have joined WHO's trial to accelerate research on effective treatments and "about 20 institutions and companies are racing to develop a vaccine."

"The viral genome was mapped in early January and shared globally which enabled tests to be developed and vaccine research to start," Tedros said at a news conference at WHO headquarters in Geneva.

White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week that the first human trial testing a potential vaccine to prevent COVID-19 is "on track" with public distribution still projected in 12 to 18 months, which would be the "ultimate game changer" in the fight against the pandemic.

U.S. health officials have been fast-tracking work with biotech company Moderna to develop a vaccine to prevent COVID-19. They began their first human trials on a potential vaccine March 16.

New York state last month began the first large-scale clinical trial looking at hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for the coronavirus after the Food and Drug Administration fast-tracked the approval process.

Chloroquine has gained a lot of attention after a small study of 36 COVID-19 patients published March 17 in France found that most patients taking the drug cleared the coronavirus from their system a lot faster than the control group. Adding azithromycin, commonly known as a Z-Pak, to the mix "was significantly more efficient for virus elimination," the researchers said. A small study in China also found that combining chloroquine with azithromycin was "found to be more potent than chloroquine."

"Stay inside and let's win this and let's get our country as soon as we can. I think it's going to be sooner than people think. Things are going really well," Trump said.

Cardinal Pell's convictions 'quashed' in shock appeal - Sky News Australia

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 10:56 PM PDT

Cardinal George Pell will walk free from jail after all convictions were today quashed by the High Court of Australia in a shock judgement. The court released a statement explaining the decision which renders Pell's earlier convictions of sexually abusing two choir boys in the 1990s null and void. "Today, the High Court granted special leave to appeal against a decision of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria and unanimously allowed the appeal," the court wrote. "The High Court found that the jury, acting rationally on the whole of the evidence, ought to have entertained a doubt as to the applicant's guilt with respect to each of the offences for which he was convicted, and ordered that the convictions be quashed and that verdicts of acquittal be entered in their place."

Updated at 10 p.m. ET

Australia's High Court has found reasonable doubt that Cardinal George Pell sexually assaulted two boys in the 1990s and has overturned his conviction.

The court acquitted the former Vatican treasurer of the charges, and no retrial will be possible.

Pell, 78, had been serving a six-year prison sentence in the case. The High Court ordered that he be released.

He was convicted of sexually abusing two 13-year-old choirboys at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne.

As an adult, one of them went to the police in 2015 and accused the cardinal of abusing him and the other boy in 1996. The other individual died of a heroin overdose the previous year without reporting abuse.

In a statement after the acquittal, as reported by Reuters, Pell said, "I hold no ill will toward my accuser, I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel; there is certainly hurt and bitterness enough."

Pell was convicted in 2018 and an appellate court upheld those convictions last year.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference's comments on the acquittal recognize that the outcome will be good news for some people and "devastating for others."

"The result today does not change the Church's unwavering commitment to child safety and to a just and compassionate response to survivors and victims of child sexual abuse. The safety of children remains supremely important not only for the bishops, but for the entire Catholic community. Any person with allegations of sexual abuse by Church personnel should go to the police."

Number of new Covid-19 cases in New Zealand drops to 54 in past 24 hours - RNZ

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 08:56 PM PDT

New Zealand has 54 new confirmed and probable cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases to 1160, the Health Ministry has confirmed.

Today's new figure is down from the 67 new cases reported yesterday.

With 65 people recovering in the past day, today is also the first day that recoveries have exceeded new cases in New Zealand, meaning the country's number of current cases has decreased for the first time since the lockdown began.

Speaking at today's media conference, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said 241 people have now recovered from the coronavirus.

He said there are 12 people in hospital - four of them are in ICUs in Wellington, Waitematā, Counties and Southern, and one of them is in a critical condition.

Watch the latest media conference here:

Dr Bloomfield also said 42,826 tests have been undertaken to date, and 2 percent of cases so far had been linked to community transmission.

He said the World Health Organisation (WHO) had updated its advice on the use of masks, particularly in the general population.

"In summary, the WHO does not recommend the use of medical masks by the general public, except in particular circumstances where someone is sick and wearing a mask to protect others, or someone who is caring for a sick person and the mask can help to protect them."

Dr Bloomfield said the Ministry of Health was expecting the number of new cases of Covid-19 to stay level.

He said there were now five more people in the Marist cluster, a larger increase in the Bluff cluster and one more in the Matamata cluster. There were no new clusters, he said.

Dr Bloomfield also gave an update on the number of breaches of the lockdown reported by police.

"There have been 291 breaches of the CDEM Act or the Health Act, 16 people have been prosecuted, 263 warnings and 10 youth referrals."

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also spoken at today's media conference and said the case rates suggested the level four lockdown was working.

"For the moment, we do appear, at this early stage, to be on track."

Yesterday the prime minister made it clear the alert level four Covid-19 lockdown will go for the full four weeks, and she said today it was more important than ever that people stayed home.

"Now is not the time to change any of our behaviours."

She also spoke about the actions of Health Minister David Clark and said while they were wrong, his knowledge and skills were required to take on Covid-19 and this was the only reason he maintained his Health portfolio.

"He must pay the price."

Ardern also gave an update on the Wage Subsidy Scheme - saying it had helped more than 1 million New Zealanders, with $6.6 billion paid out - and said she had written to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson after she heard he had developed Covid-19.

Australian Court Overturns Sex Abuse Conviction of Cardinal George Pell - The New York Times

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 07:26 PM PDT

MELBOURNE, Australia — Australia's highest court on Tuesday overturned the sexual abuse conviction of Cardinal George Pell, the highest-ranking Roman Catholic leader ever found guilty in the church's clergy pedophilia crisis.

Cardinal Pell, 78, who was the Vatican's chief financial officer and an adviser to Pope Francis, was sentenced to six years in prison last March for molesting two 13-year-old boys after Sunday Mass in 1996.

He walked free on Tuesday after a panel of seven judges ruled that the jury ought to have entertained a doubt about his guilt. The judges cited "compounding improbabilities" to conclude that the verdicts on five counts reached in 2018 were "unreasonable or cannot be supported by the evidence."

In a statement, Cardinal Pell reiterated his assertion that he had committed no crimes. "I have consistently maintained my innocence while suffering from a serious injustice," he said. "This has been remedied today with the High Court's unanimous decision."

The verdict, handed down by Chief Justice Susan Kiefel to a largely empty courtroom in Brisbane because of social distancing measures to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, shocked Catholics in Australia and around the world.

Cardinal Pell had receded from the public mind during his time in prison, and with the exception of his die-hard supporters, most Australians had come to accept his guilt as an established fact.

His case had dragged on for years. His first trial ended with a hung jury; his second carried on with a heavy shroud of secrecy as suppression orders limited what could be reported or even scrutinized.

The testimony of the case's most important witness, a former choirboy who had stepped forward with his claims in 2015, was never made public, not even in transcripts. Legal experts said that made it difficult for the public to comprehend the complexity of the case, as well as the High Court's ultimate ruling.

"Most of us didn't know any of the details, and none of us have seen the complainant's testimony," said Jeremy Gans, a Melbourne Law School professor who has been closely following the case.

The cardinal had been convicted on counts related to two separate incidents when he was the archbishop of Melbourne, making him the first bishop to be found guilty in a criminal court for sexually abusing minors, according to BishopAccountability.org, which tracks cases of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy.

The six-year sentence, which fell far short of the 50-year maximum, was closely scrutinized, but held up on its initial appeal, which was based in part on Cardinal Pell's contention that there was not sufficient evidence to support the convictions.

In its judgment on Tuesday, the High Court found that for all five charges, there were many improbabilities that had not been fully considered by the jury. There is "a significant possibility," the judges wrote in summarizing the case, "that an innocent person has been convicted."

The problems started, the decision suggested, with the single accuser. Because a second complainant had died before a trial began, the case was "wholly dependent upon the acceptance of the truthfulness and the reliability" of one man's testimony, the judges wrote.

While the jury found him credible, along with a majority of judges in the Court of Appeal, the High Court sided with a dissenting appeals court judge. That judge said that the jury ought to have had a reasonable doubt about Cardinal Pell's guilt based on testimony from other witnesses who argued that the events described by the accuser did not match the cardinal's regular Sunday routine.

There were other allegations that were not part of the case. In February 2019, a second trial in which Cardinal Pell was accused of touching boys in a swimming pool in Ballarat was canceled because of legal setbacks.

Karen Monument, the sister of one of the men in that case, said her brother and the family were "devastated" that Cardinal Pell would now walk free.

"We sincerely hope that today's decision by the court of Australia does not become a deterrent to survivor victims. It is more important than ever that they continue to speak their truth and hold to account both perpetrators and institutions," the Monument family said in a statement released via Facebook.

Phil Nagle, an advocate for abuse victims from Ballarat, Cardinal Pell's hometown, said that he and others were shocked by the judgment, which engendered further distrust of a court system that they feel has failed to bring many abusers to justice.

We "don't know what to believe anymore," Mr. Nagle said, adding that he remained hopeful that further allegations against Cardinal Pell would come to light, and that he ultimately would be brought to trial again.

"The journey is a long way from being over for Cardinal Pell," he said.

Last week, two other men came forward accusing Cardinal Pell of abusing them in Ballarat during his time as a priest in that diocese.

Rosemary O'Grady, a retired lawyer who took detailed notes at the trials on behalf of several victims' groups, said that the judgment showed the need for abuse survivors to have their own representation in the courtroom.

"The crown case was so abysmal," Ms. O'Grady said of the prosecution's case. "There were times when I was walking up and down with steam coming out my nostrils," she said, adding that the release of Cardinal Pell represented "a bad day for democracy."

Livia Albeck-Ripka reported from Melbourne, Australia, and Damien Cave from Sydney.

Cardinal George Pell to be freed as High Court overturns sex abuse conviction - CNN

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT

The momentous decision, handed down Tuesday by Chief Justice Susan Kiefel, ends a five-year legal battle that started when a man in his 30s approached police alleging Pell had abused him as a child in the mid-1990s.
At the time, Pell was Vatican Treasurer and the highest ranking Catholic official to ever be publicly accused of child sex offenses. Pell strenuously denied the charges, which he dismissed in a 2016 police interview as a "product of fantasy."
In its two-page summary of the ruling, the High Court said that the jury "ought to have entertained a doubt as to the applicant's guilt with respect to each of the offenses for which he was convicted, and ordered that the convictions be quashed and that verdicts of acquittal be entered in their place."
Tuesday's High Court ruling overturns his conviction on one count of sexual penetration of a child and four counts of committing an indecent act with a child. Pell's name will also be removed from Australia's register of child sex offenders.
Very few people were present in the small Brisbane courtroom when the decision was handed down, a stark contrast from previous hearings when critics and supporters formed long queues to get a seat in the courtroom or spillover rooms specially set up to cope with demand.
With state borders closed and social distancing enforced due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was not possible for many people to travel north from Melbourne, where the trials were held, to Brisbane, a two-hour flight away. One child abuse survivor, who has attended most previous hearings, was refused entry on arrival at Brisbane Airport and flown back to Melbourne as part of pandemic control measures
The jury's guilty verdict rested on the evidence of one man who testified that Pell had abused him and a fellow choirboy after mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne one Sunday when Pell was Archbishop. At the time, the boys were 13 years old.
The second man didn't tell anyone about the attack and took his own life in 2014 before the allegations surfaced. Neither man can be named due to Australian laws to protect victims of sexual abuse.
The man claimed that Pell cornered them in the priest's sacristy after Mass one Sunday and forced them to perform sex acts. No one witnessed the alleged attack and there was no physical evidence, just one man's word against another's. The alleged victim's testimony has never been released, but the jury found him so convincing they reached an unanimous guilty verdict.
Pell didn't take the stand during his trial, but his lawyer Robert Richter QC told the court the allegations were so implausible that only a "mad man would attempt to rape boys" at such a time and place.
The High Court ruling, which can't be challenged, will be met with relief by the Vatican, which had pledged to conduct its own investigation into Pell once he had exhausted all avenues of appeal. That will no longer be necessary.
Pell's accuser is yet to respond, but in a statement released last year he said the criminal process had taken him to places that "in my darkest moments, that I feared I would not return from."
Advocates say the decision will deliver a blow to survivors whose faith in the legal system had been restored by the guilty verdict.
Pell was convicted in December 2018 after the second of two trials held in secret to avoid prejudicing a third trial, which the Crown Prosecution opted to abandon before it began.
The first trial ended in a hung jury when the 12 jurors failed to reach a verdict after several days of deliberation
The second trial led to a six-year prison sentence that started on March 13, 2019 when Pell was led by police from court to a waiting prison van.
His legal team took his case to the Victoria Court of Appeals, arguing that there were 13 reasons why there should have been reasonable doubt in the minds of jurors when they returned the five guilty verdicts.
Two of three appeals court judges disagreed. In a ruling handed down on August 21, Chief Justice Anne Ferguson and Justice Chris Maxwell said they found the victim to be a "very compelling witness, (he) was clearly not a liar, was not a fantasist and was a witness of truth."
They said it was possible for the jury to have convicted Pell beyond reasonable doubt. However, Justice Mark Weinberg disagreed. In his dissenting statement, he said he thought the witness "was inclined to embellish aspects of his account."
"Having had regard to the whole of the evidence led at trial, and having deliberated long and hard over this matter, I find myself in the position of having a genuine doubt as to (Pell's) guilt," he said. "My doubt is a doubt which the jury ought also to have had."
Pell spent several months in Melbourne Assessment Prison before being moved to the high security Barwon Prison earlier this year, according to local media reports.
He has spent just over one year in prison, reportedly in solitary confinement due to his age, poor health and for his own safety as a then convicted child sex offender.
The Catholic Church has been plagued by claims of sexual abuse carried out by priests and other senior Catholic officials.
In December, Pope Francis abolished Vatican secrecy rules for cases of sexual abuse, effectively allowing the Catholic Church to share documents and information with civil authorities, and allowing victims to be updated of the status of their cases. It followed a historic summit in February 2019, called by the Pope to examine the church's response to claims of child sexual assault.

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Rick is off the building.

The Spearfish Strong organization has reached its goal of 15 thousand dollars to help individuals affected by COVID-19.

Rick Radliff has been camping on the roof of Heisler's Hardware in Spearfish since Friday at noon.

But he finally came down at 2:15 p.m. on Monday after the group raised $17,065, beating the goal by over two thousand dollars.

The group will use the funds to purchase food and other necessities for the elderly and families in Spearfish.

"People are just so giving right now," Rick Radliff said. "There's people giving right now that shouldn't really be giving. There's people that came by that lost their jobs. But they still wanted to give a little."

Sspearfish Strong says the need for money continues to grow.

Since Thursday, April 2, the group has already spent $3,000 on groceries for the elderly and families.

'Tiger King': Is Joe Exotic a Fraud? Rick Kirkham Said Joseph Maldonado-Passage is Afraid of Tigers - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

'Tiger King': Is Joe Exotic a Fraud? Rick Kirkham Said Joseph Maldonado-Passage is Afraid of Tigers - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic, took the world by storm in the Netflix docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Madness, and MayhemBefore the Netflix show came to be, reality television producer Rick Kirkham sought Maldonado-Passage out because he knew the life of the "Tiger King" would make for good reality television.

In filming his reality series, Kirkham discovered the dark underworld of big cat breeding and selling in the United States — he also learned that Joe Exotic was at the epicenter. Ironically, Kirkham said the "Tiger King" had a fear of big cats.

Joe Exotic is afraid of tigers

Rick Kirkham explained the studio fire

Kirkham was interviewed by Extra TV, where he discussed the mysterious studio fire that caused him to lose hours worth of footage — some of which was incriminating. "Joe Exotic blamed me, he blamed Carole Baskin, he blamed a DJ in Tampa," Kirkham explained.

In discussing what happened leading up to the arson, Kirkham shared: "Two days before the studio fire, he and I got into an argument over the fact that I had a contract with him to make the reality show and he was so upset. He made an immediate departure, said 'I'm gone from the park for a couple of days.'"

Kirkham also said Maldonado-Passage changed the locks on the studio so that he no longer had access, and the next thing he knew, his footage was up in flames. Had the footage been saved, Kirkham said it would have been a lot more violent than the Netflix series was.

Rick Kirkham said Joe Exotic was 'very scared of the tigers'

In the docuseries, Kirkham gives Maldonado-Passage the title of the "Tiger King." Ironically enough, the owner of the G.W. Zoo was terribly afraid of big cats.

During his Extra TV interview, Kirkham admitted that Maldonado-Passage had a certain air about him. He described how "you were lured into this surreal world of Joe Exotic," explaining how, when Maldonado-Passage was in front of a camera, he "acted like he ran the whole world and he wasn't scared of anything."

Then Kirkham dropped a bombshell — Maldonado-Passage was very scared of the tigers. "The ones he'd get in the cages with were either blind or sedated," Kirkham said, adding:

What people don't know — and I have the footage — is that behind that chair was the actual trainer. Those weren't his tigers. Those were someone else's tigers that they could control, and [the trainer] was behind there with a gun and had the tigers chained because Joe was terrified to get in cages with tigers.

According to Kirkham, Maldonado-Passage's career as a big cat fanatic "was all just a facade," adding he was a "very evil guy to the animals and the people" that worked for him.

Today, Maldonado-Passage sits in prison for murder-for-hire as well as violating the Endangered Species Act and the Lacey Act. In total, he will serve 22 years, with three years of supervised release when he gets out.

Entertainers from around the world will come together for a global televised special in support of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, Lady Gaga said during a World Health Organization call Monday.

The singer said the special would take place April 18 and proceeds would go toward funding protective equipment for health-care professionals.

"We are all so very grateful to all of the health-care professionals across the country and the world who are on the front lines during COVID-19," she said on the call.

The event will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert and feature characters from "Sesame Street" as well as a number of musical guests.

The slate of artists includes: Alanis Morissette, Andrea Bocelli, Billie Eilish, Billie Joe Armstrong, Burna Boy, Chris Martin, David Beckham, Eddie Vedder, Elton John, FINNEAS, Idris and Sabrina Elba, J Balvin, John Legend, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban, Kerry Washington, Lang Lang, Lizzo, Maluma, Paul McCartney, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Shah Rukh Khan and Stevie Wonder.

The special will be broadcast live starting at 8 pm ET on ABC, NBC, ViacomCBS Networks and iHeartMedia, as well as on Bell Media networks and platforms in Canada.

Internationally, BBC One will run the program on April 19, with international broadcasters that include beIN Media Group, MultiChoice Group and RTE.

The virtual broadcast will be a multi-hour digital broadcast and will also stream on Alibaba, Amazon Prime Video, Apple, Facebook, Instagram, LiveXLive, Tencent, Tencent Music Entertainment Group, TIDAL, TuneIn, Twitch, Twitter, Yahoo, and YouTube.

"As we honor and support the heroic efforts of community health workers, 'One World: Together at Home' aims to serve as a source of unity and encouragement in the global fight to end COVID-19," Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen, said in a statement. "Through music, entertainment and impact, the global live-cast will celebrate those who risk their own health to safeguard everyone else's."

Smartphone-optimized streaming service Quibi launches today - Android Police

Smartphone-optimized streaming service Quibi launches today - Android Police

We've got Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and myriad other streaming video options. Is there room for another competitor? Hollywood seems to think so, and that's why Quibi is launching today. Quibi focuses on quick episodes optimized for phones, and you can give it a shot for free.

Quibi's selling point is that you can watch the videos in either landscape or portrait orientation thanks to its "sidecar" video format. You can switch back and forth whenever you want, and the episodes are less than 10 minutes long—perfect for all those dang Gen Z-ers with their short attention spans.

The service, which is backed by Hollywood heavyweights like Jeffrey Katzenberg, comes with a 90-day free trial. After that, it'll be $4.99 per month with ads or $7.99 per month with no ads. That ad-supported tier is probably going to be a tough sell. There is a lot of content at launch, so maybe it'll keep you busy in quarantine for a while. Some T-Mobile subscribers can also get a year of Quibi for free.

In this era of social distancing, few celebrities have carved out a social media presence as appealing as those of Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. They're married, so they get to share their isolation — and they've been filling the time with a kindhearted weekly YouTube show they call Some Good News.

As the title suggests, it's a roundup — anchored by Krasinski, with input from special guests — of day-brightening stories about people doing good in the world. The show's second episode, which posted late Sunday, rolls along amiably enough until about midway through, when Krasinski welcomes a 9-year-old named Aubrey.

Inspired by a tweet expressing sadness that Aubrey would have to miss her much-anticipated trip to see Hamilton on Broadway, Krasinski and Blunt inform a star-struck Aubrey that they'll be flying her to see the show once Broadway reopens. But then, given that Blunt starred in Mary Poppins Returns with one Lin-Manuel Miranda, they decide to top themselves.

The moment you can secure a quick break, be sure to strap in for this 17-minute explosion of good-hearted joy, courtesy of the stars of A Quiet Place — and the entire (socially distanced) original cast of Hamilton.

Lady Gaga "Chromatica" Album Cover - Papermag

Lady Gaga "Chromatica" Album Cover - Papermag

Just like the rest of the entertainment industry, Lady Gaga has had to hold off on the release of her much-awaited new album Chromatica because of the coronavirus crisis. But now she's back to teasing her fans about her 2020 release.

The pop superstar dropped her new album cover on Instagram after it leaked online on Saturday. According to Stereogum, the photo was leaked through a Czech Republic online music store, and was posted briefly on Gaga's official website.

On Sunday, she posted three photos, with a simple caption that reads, "#Chromatica 2020." The first picture shows Gaga with her new signature pink hair, dressed in armor, stretched out on the Chromatica logo. The whole image echoes the alien-futuristic theme that we've seen in the "Stupid Love" video.

Gaga also gives a preview of what the physical copies of the record in vinyl and cassette tape forms would look like.

We seriously can't wait to get our hands on the record, but we'll just have to wait because the new release date has yet to be revealed.

On Wednesday, Gaga told Jimmy Fallon in an interview during The Tonight Show home edition that she's going to be making an announcement on Monday, April 6. But it's more likely to be related to COVID-19, as she said during the quick chat.

Still, we're hoping for maybe another single, or to hear about the official album drop date. We'll just have to tune in and see.

「VIVA LA ROCK」ゴールデンウィークの開催を断念、今夏を目指し日程協議中 - ナタリー

「VIVA LA ROCK」

「VIVA LA ROCK」は2014年に初開催され、今年で7回目を迎えるロックフェスティバル。今年は3月5日の段階で76組の出演アーティストが発表されていた。
