Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse safety Andre Cisco, the first true freshman in program history to earn All-America honors, will forego his college eligibility and enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
Cisco, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier this season, announced the news Tuesday evening.
“This is something I’ve been dreaming of since I was 8 years old, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity even under the unfortunate circumstances,” Cisco said in his announcement video.
“I’ve given this school everything I got, and this community gave it back tenfold. I can’t wait to make ya’ll proud.”
Cisco had been pegged as an early draft entry since earning All-America honors as a true freshman in 2018, when he tied for the national lead with seven interceptions.
His knack for takeaways contined throughout his sophomore season and became his calling card throught his career, which abruptly ended moments before his 25th game on Sept. 26 against Georgia Tech when he collided with a teammate during warm-ups and suffered a lower-body injury.
Cisco had surgery earlier Tuesday.
“He doesn’t have any pain or discomfort,” his mother said Tuesday morning before the surgery. “He’s walking. At the end of the day, that’s what I’m happy about.”
Cisco finished his career with 13 career interceptions, tied with Walt Slovenski for fourth in school history.
Before the injury, Cisco was projected to be drafted in the first two days of the NFL draft. He committed to this path knowing he’ll face a rehab process that will cut into his preparation for the draft.
He’s content making that choice.
“At one point, I never thought I’d make it this far,” Cisco said. "The road to this point was not easy, but it was worth it.
“As a New Yorker, ya’ll made a kid’s dream turn to reality and for that, I’m forever grateful. These past three years have been unbelievable. Since the moment I stepped on this campus, it felt like a dream.”
