The reigning Dutch champions went into the clash one point behind PSV and with the chance to regain the summit after recording four wins and a draw in their opening five matches. But while Ajax were favourites to prevail against VVV, who sat 10th in the standings, nobody could have predicted the dominant manner of their victory as the hosts were simply swept away. After a scoreless game went into second-half stoppage time, Schoenfeld scored a pinball goal off a corner kick from the left side that Loons defender Michael Boxall headed from the near post off the far post, directly to Schoenfeld. He had two touches inside the six-yard box to control the ball and then boot it into a open goal just when ie appeared the Loons would get their fifth draw in their last eight games. Instead, they ran off the field just moments later on a night when midfield partners Ozzie Alonso and Jan Gregus returned to the starting 11 and star playmaker Emanuel Reynoso came back as a second-half sub on his way back from testing positive for COVID-19. The victory was the Loons' third on the road this season and their first since March. The Loons played on without injured Hassani Dotson, who proved himself valuable defending the midfield while Alonso was out six weeks because of a hamstring and while Gregus missed a mere two games while he played overseas with Slovakia national team. He missed only two when Heath feared he might miss as many as six in October because of those two games postponed by positive coronavirus testing among his teammates while he was away. Paul Pogba had a good game, and there is hope he can link up well with Cavani this season Pogba's performance here was one of the few positives and the hope is that he and Cavani can create the kind of partnership that he enjoyed with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 2016-17 season. 'It's a nice challenge and a decision to make when you've got good players on the bench,' said Solskjaer. 'All three games this week he [Pogba] has made a positive impact. 'He's been out for a while with coronavirus and maybe I was unfair starting him in a few games but he has done great when he's come on.  The game ended 0-0, with neither team able to find a breakthrough on a very wet pitch 'Edinson has been out for a little while. He's a good presence in the box and he's going to give us a lot. He gives us something different to what we have of course. He has come in and had a great influence on the training ground already, but we know he needs game time to get his sharpness. 'I think we started a little bit slow but if anyone was going to be a winner it was us. We decided to get out of the box to get a foothold in the game, but didn't create too many chances.' The 33-year-old arrived as a free agent on deadline day, having left Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, and has been working towards full fitness after not playing since March when the coronavirus crisis cancelled the Ligue 1 season. Cavani came off the bench in the 58th minute in Saturday's 0-0 draw, entering the fray alongside Paul Pogba, and nearly scored with his very first touch while he provided a more fixed presence inside the box.
