| Three Muslim Americans explain why they're voting for Donald Trump - Middle East Eye Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:08 PM PDT Yes, they exist. Despite everything he's said and done to Muslims, there are a large number of Muslim Americans who support President Donald Trump. Some say it is the economy and lower taxes, others say it the social and conservative values of the Republican Party. Others simply like Trump's charisma. Either way, as 3 November nears, support for Trump among Muslim Americans continues to emerge through cracks and crevices across the country, sometimes in the most unlikely places. There are Pakistanis for Trump, Bangladeshis for Trump, and even if their online presence is in no way meaningful, their impact on the elections may be. Muslims make up about one percent of the US population. And though they are a minute proportion of overall voters, their concentration in a series of battleground states means they could actually swing the vote. "We know that several key swing states are home to higher-than-average Muslim populations and our data shows that American Muslims are registering to vote at the highest level in five years, so the potential exists," Erum Ikramullah, research project manager at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), told Middle East Eye. "American Muslims, like other religious groups in America, are not a monolith. What our data support is that Muslims, like the general public, are not guided by their religiosity, but by their political views and opinions." In early October, an ISPU poll found that while Muslims have repeatedly shown the least enthusiam for Trump, approval of the president's job performance among Muslims increased from 13 percent in 2018 to 16 percent in 2019 and 30 percent in 2020. Ikramullah says their research shows that 14 percent of Muslims polled said Trump would be their candidate of choice for the 2020 election. Meanwhile, according to a survey released in late October by the Arab American Institute (AAI), 59 percent of those who identified as Arab said they were planning to cast their ballot for Joe Biden. Voters surveyed said they viewed Trump as "ineffective in addressing most issues of priority concern to their community". But 35 percent said they would be voting for Trump. Middle East Eye spoke to three Muslim Americans about their vehement support for Trump. We also fact checked their claims. Sajid Tarrar, Maryland"Trump has accomplished a lot in office for America. What he has achieved, his opponent [Joe Biden] could not achieve in 50 years. Trump's biggest achievement was a 3.4 percent unemployment rate, building a wall on the southern border where drugs and gangs are coming from, going after China for intellectual property theft, leaving the Paris Climate Change Accord and withdrawing from NAFTA. "He is reforming American politics and democracy. He has also appointed conservative judges. "The list is huge, versus 50 years of the establishment. "For Muslims, he has also done a lot. His first trip was to Saudi Arabia, he has done so much for the Middle East peace plan, he is an anti-war president. America is prosperous and safe. Muslims are safe and happy here. "On the Muslim ban, it is important to know that most of media coverage in America since 2016 is anti-Trump. This is how they twist [facts]. The Muslim ban was not his ideology. The list was created by Obama. Also the countries on the list had poorly run governments and documentation was hard to verify from those countries, too. "The cages at the [Mexico-US] border were also created by Obama, too. When it comes to asylum seekers, of course those who align with American values and respect American values, are very welcome to come. But Donald Trump's job was to keep America safe. But a lot of people were coming here as asylum seekers but they came with different intentions. They had some terrorist intentions. This has been proven by intelligence. "Trump has also condemned white supremacy many times. In a recent town hall he condemned white supremacy and he asked why the left-wing media, like CNN, would not condemn Antifa and Black Lives Matter (BLM). "On Covid-19, the left wing has tried to politicise it because they have no leadership or agenda. They think if they talk more about Covid-19, he would disappear. But it's the other way around. Look how he came out of hospital and told America not to be afraid of Covid-19 and let us learn how to live with it. The whole world was not ready for Covid-19. And China should be held accountable." Middle East Eye fact check:Presidential nominee Joe Biden has been in public service for 47 years, including eight years as vice-president, but he has never been president, therefore it is unclear what Tarrar means when he accuses Biden of not having achieved anything during his time in government. Tarrar claims that Trump has done a lot for Muslims. However, Trump's history of vilifying Muslims pre-dates his run for the White House. In 2011, he said America had "a Muslim problem". As president he signed the first iteration of the Muslim ban in early 2017, that included a travel ban on persons from seven Muslim-majority countries. He said the goal was to block out "radical Islamic terrorists" and that priority would be granted to Christians. Tarrar insinuated that the Muslim ban was a distortion created by the anti-Trump media. However it was Rudy Giuliani, Trump's lawyer, who was among the first to describe it as a "Muslim ban". Though Giuliani tried to explain the ban was "based on places where there are substantial evidence that people are sending terrorists into our country", he also admitted that Trump had also called it a "Muslim ban". Tarrar also asserted that tougher laws on immigration were an attempt to prevent "terror attacks". However, several reports show that most convicted terrorists were born in the US. Earlier this week, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, concluded that white supremacist groups were responsible for 67 percent of "terrorist plots and attacks" in the first eight months of 2020. Tarrar's point about Trump-engineered "peace deals in the Middle East" is also false, given that the widely touted "deal of the century" between Israel and the Palestinians and the brokered deals between Israel, the UAE and Bahrain fundamentally erase Palestinians from the equation. Tarrar is correct that Obama built the cages at the southern border, but children were not systematically separated from their parents as they were for some time under the Trump administration. Erum Ikramullah, ISPU research project manager, told MEE that research shows Trump supporters in the Muslim community are similar to Trump supporters in the wider general public. "Those who select Trump - whether Muslim or from the general public - are more likely to be white, Republican, to hold the economy as their most important policy priority. Additionally, they are more likely to be opposed to building coalitions with BLM and more likely to favour coalition-building on religious liberty issues and to endorse anti-Muslim tropes." According to ISPU, nearly two-thirds of Muslims (65 percent) express support for activists in their faith community to build coalitions with Black Lives Matter (BLM), compared with 54 percent of Jews, 42 percent of Catholics, 37 percent of Protestants, 30 percent of white Evangelicals, and 44 percent of the general public. Under Trump, more than 220,000 Americans have died from the Covid-19 pandemic, a majority of whom were people of colour and minorities, making Covid-19 a fundamentally legitimate election issue. According to a Pew poll, just 24 percent of Trump supporters think Covid-19 is an important election issue, mirroring the president's approach to the virus. Saba Ahmed, Washington DC"Donald Trump has been a great president for Muslims worldwide. He has ended wars and brought troops home from fighting endless wars in Muslim countries. Drone strikes in Pakistan have been eliminated. His foreign policies have strengthened America and regained our respect in the world. I would like to see him continue to be the president of the United States and make the American economy stronger. "President Trump may not be perfect, but he is not a career politician and I expect him to continue working for the American people and give his best. "It was never a 'Muslim' ban. It actually bans Venezuela and few other non-Muslim countries. It was a national security policy started under the Obama administration to restrict immigration from certain high risk countries. "Every country has the right to know who enters and leaves our country. Law and order must be maintained if we are to have a good checks-and-balances system. Some of his policies which resulted in children being separated from their parents at the border were abhorrent and I strongly oppose them. As for his support for Israel, it is no less than Obama and Biden's approach to Israel. "Trump has emboldened many law-abiding citizens, who have been a silent majority. While there may be a sector of white supremacists, we must actively get involved with the Trump campaign and administration to change such views. "Yes, America has become great again and we hope that the next four years will bring continued prosperity to our great nation. "President Trump is a businessman who understands the tax laws and uses them to his benefit. It is no different than Jeff Bezos [owner of Amazon] or other billionaires paying zero taxes. There will be a smooth transition to the next administration, but we expect him to retain the White House easily this November. "President Trump has been great for Pakistan. His foreign policies are commendable and the fact that he has almost eliminated the US troop presence in South Asia and ended drone strikes is awesome. Many Pakistani Americans support Trump and his efforts for Pakistan. Under Obama, drone strikes killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people every day from 2008–2016. For that reason alone, we are grateful to President Trump for not killing innocent Pakistanis as collateral damage." This interview was edited for clarity and brevity. Middle East Eye fact check:Contrary to Ahmed's claims, Trump did not end American wars in the Middle East nor did he bring home all the troops as he'd promised. There hasn't been a new intervention under his watch, a novelty for American presidents, but as the NYT notes: "Mr Trump has deployed thousands of additional soldiers to the Persian Gulf in response to growing tensions with Iran, which some analysts warn could spill into a hot war if he is re-elected. He has also done little to scale down major American military bases in places like Qatar and Bahrain." Trump has also not ended drone attacks as claimed by Ahmed. The number of US drone strikes in Pakistan has reduced significantly, but elsewhere, in Somalia and Yemen, they have been shrouded in further secrecy. Though Obama was known as the drone president, drone strikes between 2008-2016 did not kill "hundreds of thousands of people" as claimed by Ahmed. According to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, there were 563 drone strikes in Somalia, Pakistan and Yemen during Obama's two terms in office. The Centre for Foreign Relations said Obama had authorised 542 drones strikes that "killed an estimated 3,797 people, including 324 civilians". The Bureau of Investigative Journalism concluded that between 384 and 807 civilians were killed in those countries. In 2019, Trump ended a rule that required US intelligence officials to publish the number of civilians killed in drone strikes outside of war zones. His government also eased restrictions and oversight on the export of drones and gave the military and CIA more authority to conduct strikes. According to Foreign Policy: "Under US President Donald Trump, however, an already opaque and murderous set of rules has become even more widely applied, and ever less accountable." Ahmed says there are many thousands of Muslim Trump supporters around the country, but neither Tarrar, Ahmed, nor the Trump campaign were able to provide MEE with a specific number. Farhana Shifa, Arizona"President Trump is the most pro-life of all presidents. He also signed an executive order [guaranteeing] freedom of religion; he is also responsible for the current peace deal with the Muslim countries with Israel. "He is bringing harmony between Muslims, Christians and Jews and all kinds of religions. So as a Muslim, it is a glorified position being an American, to see my president take care of this. Not only this, there aren't any wars and nor are there any terror attacks. So this means he is capable of taking care of such things. The Democrats tried to show that they care by talking about these issues; even in this election Biden has quoted the Prophet Muhammad, without understanding Islam. "They support abortion and infanticide, after all. "Biden was in politics for 47 years and he never supported immigrants. Now, just to be president, he is saying he cares. To think that everything will be dreamy and flowery when he is president for immigrants is a mistake. I would rather go someone who can do things rather than someone just offers 'hope'. "President Trump, instead, has focused on harmony and security. "People need to understand who is benefiting their faith and their livelihood and not because of what they are hearing in the media. "Trump did make some hurtful comments, but these happened way back, and we got through past that. So his comments as a candidate are redundant. "After he became president, we have seen his actions speak louder than words. "He has enhanced the situation for women, for all women. I think many Muslims prefer the Democrats, because they prefer the handouts that they promise." This interview was edited for clarity and brevity. Middle East Eye fact check:Abortion is a major issue in the US, and for some Muslims, especially Republican supporters, it is no different. Former vice-president Biden has expressed support for a women's choice to have an abortion. While President Trump has espoused opposition to abortion, several observers, including conservatives and pro-life advocates, note he is not particularly committed to the issue, pointing to a mixed record as president. One conservative observer noted that Trump's response to Covid-19, including repeatedly lying to the American public about the Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrated that while "it's entirely fair to call him nominally anti-abortion. It's not credible to call him pro-life. And the distinction matters". Shifa says most of Trump's derogatory comments about Muslims were before his presidency, but Trump has repeatedly vilified Muslims doing his presidency, too. On Biden's record on immigration, Shifa is correct that, under the Obama and Biden administration, three million undocumented people were deported from the US. Biden has since described it as a "big mistake". On Shifa's assertion that Trump has been good for women, most agree that Trump's policies have harmed women in several ways. The Centre for American Progress described his administration as utilising "every tool in its arsenal to chip away at women's health, employment, economic security, and rights overall". For instance, Trump and the White House repeatedly claim they are committed to women's rights, but his administration's decision to defund the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), undermined projects involving family planning and reproductive services in more than 150 countries around the globe. Though it is true that the administration signed an executive order promoting religious freedom, it is also true that, under Trump, hate crimes and vitriol towards undocumented migrants and Muslims, as well as Jews, have seen record highs. | Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:48 PM PDT  "Full House" star Lori Loughlin reported to federal prison on Friday to begin a two-month sentence for her role in the college admissions cheating scandal and, in a coronavirus twist, one of her fellow defendants failed to win early release. Loughlin, 56, reported to the same Dublin, Calif., prison where "Desperate Housewives" actress Felicity Huffman served 11 days last October for her role in the same cheating scandal. Loughlin will be expected to follow the same rules, including a 5 a.m. wake-up call, five inmate roll calls per day and a uniform of a brown T-shirt and khaki pants. Her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, 57, is set to report to prison on Nov. 19 to begin a five-month sentence. In May, the couple admitted to paying $500,000 to Rick Singer and Key Worldwide Foundation to falsely designate their daughters, Isabella Rose Giannulli, 21, and Olivia Jade Giannulli, 20, as University of Southern California crew team recruits, even though neither girl was a rower. Loughlin and her husband even posed them on rowing machines for their admissions applications. Loughlin has "agreed that, during her two month sentence, she will not seek an early release from prison on COVID-related grounds," according to U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling's office. The lawyer for another "Varsity Blues" parent, Elizabeth Henriquez, asked that her seven-month sentence be reduced by seven weeks. But her case manager at the Dublin prison told her that, absent any modification of her sentence, she will be released on Jan. 7 after a 21-day "exit quarantine" to make sure she is COVID-free. "The conditions of this 'exit quarantine' will be analogous to solitary confinement," her lawyer, Aron Katz, said in court papers. "Elizabeth will be allowed out of her tiny cell for only 10 minutes per day, three days per week, to shower and change clothes. … The only difference between these 'exit quarantine' conditions and solitary confinement is that Elizabeth may have a cellmate, which in our opinion is even worse than being alone because it will deprive Elizabeth of any privacy … and make her tiny cell even more physically cramped." Scott Taylor, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Prisons, said all inmates are placed in quarantine for at least 14 days prior to their departure. After the quarantine period, an inmate who tests negative for coronavirus and is asymptomatic is approved for release. If the inmate tests positive or becomes symptomatic, the inmate is placed in medical isolation and is not permitted to be released until medical staff deems the person recovered. "If an inmate has active COVID-19 or is in medical isolation on their release date, or is an immediate release because of statutory or judicial requirements, the institution notifies the local health authorities in the location where the inmate is releasing," Taylor said. While asymptomatic and now in the clear, the positive tests saw Ronaldo denied the chance to face off against Lionel Messi in the Champions League, with the Argentine star ultimately scoring in Barcelona's 2-0 win over Juventus. Prior to his enforced lockdown, Ronaldo had been in fine form for club and country, scoring three goals in his first two Serie A appearances of the new season. Though a situation that would test even the most patient of individuals, the 35-year-old found a way to stay mentally strong and recently hinted that Kaizen philosophy played its part in keeping him positive on social media. What is Kaizen philosophy?Kaizen is the Sino-Japanese word for "improvement" and is widely referenced as a business approach of continuous improvement that involves all aspects of a company. | How China's Xi Jinping blew a golden opportunity with US President Donald Trump - CNN Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:08 PM PDT Trump, less than three months into his first term, had spent his election campaign denouncing the Chinese government for undermining the United States, through a wide trade imbalance and cheap labor. "We can't continue to allow China to rape our country," Trump said in May 2016. But when Trump was standing alongside Xi at Mar-a-Lago the following April, his tone changed dramatically. The two leaders exchanged compliments during a news conference, with Trump describing their relationship as "outstanding." Pictures from the meeting showed the two men sitting side-by-side, smiling broadly, on a golden couch. "It was a great honor to have President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan of China as our guests ... Tremendous goodwill and friendship was formed," Trump tweeted shortly after the visit.  Three years later, and that "outstanding" relationship is a distant memory. Trump no longer talks about his friendship with Xi as relations between the two countries continue to plummet, amid stark divisions over trade, technology, human rights and accusations of Chinese expansionism. As Trump battles for reelection in November's presidential election, experts now say that Xi may have missed a golden opportunity to establish a more beneficial relationship with the US President. In Trump, China found an American leader who seemed focused on transactional politics and trade deals, rather than human rights and Chinese foreign policy, both topics which the ruling Communist Party have been traditionally eager to avoid. It wasn't just their relationship with the US either. More broadly, Trump's isolationist "America First" foreign policy offered Xi a clear opening to assert China's global leadership credentials across a range of key policy areas -- from the climate crisis to free trade. But rather than building up goodwill, China chose to intimidate its global partners and indulge in fierce nationalist rhetoric. And instead of becoming a global power to rival the US, China saw its reputation plunge around the world. How Trump could have helped XiLess than a week before Trump took office in January 2017, Xi took the stage in Davos, Switzerland, at what appeared to be the dawn of a golden era for China and Beijing's international influence. In a speech to the global liberal elite at the World Economic Forum, held in the Swiss Alps, Xi called for countries to shun protectionism in a clear swipe at Trump's "America First" rhetoric. His speech was well received among economic leaders. In his introduction of Xi at Davos, World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab said "the world is looking to China."  Daniel Russel, who was US assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs under President Barack Obama, said that it was Trump's anti-globalist rhetoric as much as Xi's words that made China look like a potential alternative global leader to the US. "At the same time that Xi was hypocritically claiming to be the grand defender of the global system, Trump was attacking it viciously and putting forward a very nationalist jingoistic message. So that magnified the contrasts and widened the gap," said Russel, who is now vice president of international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute. Across a wide range of areas, Trump's policies opened an opportunity for China to take a more leading role in global affairs. Leaving the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in January 2017 opened the door for China to push its own regional trade deal. After Trump ditched the Paris cimate change accords five months later, Xi told a gathering of Communist Party leaders China would be a "torch bearer" on the issue. When Trump began to distance the US from its allies, calling on long-time partners to pay their "fair share" of defense spending, Beijing took the opportunity to move closer to regional powers.  China and Japan planned an exchange of state visits for the first time in a decade, thawing a deep diplomatic freeze which had been in place since a territorial dispute over islands in the East China Sea in 2012. South Korean leader Moon Jae-in announced in June 2017 that the deployment of a controversial US-made missile defense system, heavily opposed by China, would be deferred. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, leader of one of the US's closest allies in Asia, said that he "loved" Xi Jinping. "I think at the start of the Trump administration, China was being seen by the rest of the world as a country which potentially could provide a good steadying role in steering the world though the next turbulent phase in the coming few years," said Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute think tank in London. For Xi, it was a remarkable 12 months. The Chinese government saw its stock rise internationally, built a close relationship with the new US President and had been handed strategic victories on trade, foreign policy and climate change. In short, "the Trump administration was a godsend for the Communist Party of China," said Tsang.  Why it went wrongYet in October 2020, nearly four years after Trump was inaugurated, China's global reputation is at its lowest point in years. Poll numbers released by Pew Research on October 6 found that the Chinese government was viewed negatively in all 14 major countries surveyed, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and the US. In 2002, 65% of US citizens surveyed viewed China favorably -- in 2020 that number is just 22%. A massive 74% view China unfavorably. The coronavirus pandemic, first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, has severely damaged Beijing's reputation as countries struggle to deal with rising caseloads. Government leaders and officials around the world, including Trump, have accused Beijing of mishandling the outbreak by playing down the severity of the virus in the early stage, and allowing it to spread overseas. But even before the outbreak, China was finding its reputation was beginning to dim, especially among Western nations. For years, Australia has been at the forefront of the West's uneasy embrace of China -- a close US ally whose largest trading partner is Beijing. With an unpopular and isolationalist American leader, China had never had a better chance to woo Australia. But when the Australian government introduced legislation in 2018 against foreign interference, Beijing was furious, seeing the legislation as targeted at them. Leaders in Canberra were cut off from Beijing, visas were frozen, valuable exports to China suddenly faced increased customs checks and an Australian writer was charged with spying. In 2017, more than 60% of Australians had a positive view of China, according to Pew. By 2020, it was just 15%. The treatment of Australia wasn't unique, however. Relations between Canada and the US were strained under Trump, who clashed with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over immigration and trade. But instead of moving closer to Trudeau, Beijing plunged relations with Ottawa into a deep freeze. Following the arrest of a top executive and daughter of the founder of the Chinese tech giant Huawei in Canada at the request of the United States in late 2018, two Canadians were detained in China. The two men, entrepreneur Michael Spavor and former diplomat Michael Kovrig, were later charged with spying and handling state secrets. In 2019, China moved to block Canadian canola seed and meat exports, leading to uncertainty among other Canadian businesses operating in China. On the 50th anniversary of Canada beginning diplomatic ties with China on October 14, Trudeau delivered a stern rebuke of Beijing's international diplomacy and human rights record. "We will remain absolutely committed to working with our allies to ensure that China's approach of coercive diplomacy ... is not viewed as a successful tactic by them," he said. In neighboring India, the rise of populist Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 had presented an opportunity for Xi and his government to woo New Delhi, a rising regional power that had long been courted by Washington. In 2018, it seemed like Xi was making headway. The two sides resolved a heated border dispute peacefully and the Chinese leader met with Modi in Wuhan for a two-day informal summit, where the two strongman leaders were pictured sipping tea and strolling through ornate gardens. But two years later, India's relationship with China has nosedived to its lowest point in years. A border dispute between the two nuclear-armed countries in June, where more than 20 Indian soldiers were killed, has pushed New Delhi closer both militarily and diplomatically to Beijing's rivals, the US and Japan. New Delhi has also banned a raft of popular Chinese-owned apps, including video-sharing giant TikTok, in a major blow to China's tech sector. Yinan He, associate professor at Lehigh University's Department of International Relations, said that, over the past three years, when Beijing wasn't actively starting diplomatic fights with other countries it often talked down to or intimidated them. "The behavior of China under Xi Jinping really enraged many other countries," she said. Beijing has also faced growing criticism within the international community over several domestic controversies, including its ongoing crackdown on human rights and dissent, the erosion of civil rights in Hong Kong, and military expansionism in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. In particular, the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in the western Xinjiang region has become a major concern for countries around the world. On October 6, Germany presented a statement to the United Nations on behalf of 39 countries, mostly from Europe and North America, publicly condemning China's actions in Xinjiang, where up to 2 million people, mostly Turkic minorities, are believed to have been placed in detention centers. But in the face of international criticism, the ruling Chinese Communist Party has not relented. In fact, Beijing has moved to embrace a new breed of aggressive diplomacy to combat what it has denounced as unfair and biased attacks on China. Dubbed "wolf warrior diplomacy" after a series of aggressively patriotic Chinese films in which the hero bests US special agents, this emboldened form of diplomacy encourages officials to forcibly denounce any perceived slight to Beijing and the Communist Party. In July 2019, Zhao Lijian, then a counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, began to hit back against the US government on social media over allegations of human rights abuses in China. Zhao accused the US of criticizing China while ignoring its own domestic problems with racism, income inequality and gun violence. Zhao was later promoted, becoming one of three rotating spokespeople for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Though the aggressive behavior has estranged diplomatic partners, Jessica Chen Weiss, associate professor of government at Cornell University, said the real target remains domestic. According to Weiss, the authoritarian nature of China's government means that it can't brook any concession internationally that might seem like weakness at home. To the Communist Party, weakness might spell the end of its time in power. "When push comes to the shove the Chinese government has to first and foremost focus on regime security," said Weiss. Experts say that in recent months there has been discussion within the Chinese government over whether these "wolf warrior" tactics have hurt their country more than they've helped. But for now, with international concerns over its handling of the coronavirus growing louder, any chance of a short-term revival for Beijing's global reputation seems unlikely. Weiss said that, in fact, China's system of government may not actually have ever been up to the challenge of becoming the world's leading superpower, at least not in the model of the US. The Chinese government places as much importance on being feared as being loved, Weiss said, and that severely limits its ability to wield soft power and form close diplomatic relationships. According to Weiss, China is unlikely to take the US' place, no matter how much Trump pulled back on the world stage. "(Beijing wants to ensure) that nobody thinks China can be pushed around, or taken advantage of," she said. "That emphasis on deterrence and intimidating dissent has conveyed Chinese resolve but it undercuts Beijing's efforts to showcase its international image as a benign global leader." Broken bondThis year, Trump has been eager to inflame popular anger against China for its handling of Covid-19 -- at least in part to distract from his administration's own failure to contain the virus domestically. He regularly describes the disease as the "China virus" and has placed a large proportion of the blame for the escalating US epidemic at Beijing's door. Yet despite his regular attacks on China, Trump never attacks Xi personally. On August 11, seemingly more in sorrow than anger, Trump said he used to like Xi, but he didn't "feel the same way now." "I had a very, very good relationship, and I haven't spoken to him in a long time," he told Fox Sports Radio. Xi and Trump are now a long way from where they started three and a half years ago, and in that time Beijing's reputation around the world has suffered. "Anti-China sentiment is at its highest levels in decades ... and Beijing is aware of that," Weiss said. As early as August 2018, Chinese officials in private were voicing their concerns that Xi was mishandling the US relationship and risking a disastrous plunge in bilateral relations. Those voices are only likely to grow louder ahead of the 2022 National People's Congress in China, where Xi would normally be expected to hand over power to a chosen successor. "I suspect that Xi might be facing some internal challenges from people within the Communist Party who are not happy about his heavy-handed style," said He, the Lehigh University China expert.  But whether or not China has taken advantage of the Trump administration's shrunken presence on the world stage, experts said that in the long run, the fundamentals favor Beijing and Xi. Russel said that the US and other leading nations were heavily reliant on China and the massive wealth generated by its economy, making any moves towards a broader decoupling and a return to a Cold War level of separation unlikely. "If you look at it from China's point of view ... are you going to call into question the financial goose that lays the golden egg?" he said. Following football's return after the coronavirus-enforced hiatus last season, Premier League teams - and most other competitions worldwide - were allowed to make five substitutions as a way of dealing with hectic schedules and lack of preparation. However, the Premier League decided to return to three substitutions this season despite FIFA's approval to keep the initial change in place until August 2021, with clubs arguing that bigger squads would be favoured by the rule. Liverpool have picked up a lengthy injury list in the early stages of the campaign, with Virgil van Dijk likely to miss the entire season, while Thiago, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also currently on the treatment table. Klopp feels the Premier League showed a 'lack of leadership' with their decision to cut back on substitutes because of the packed schedules several teams were going to encounter. "It should be [back on the agenda] but I don't think it's possible because of the system," Klopp said. "It doesn't help obviously when Chelsea have injuries, and City and Liverpool and United and Tottenham and Arsenal and Leicester, because that is not enough votes for the rest. "That is the system. I thought it should have been back in in the first place. "For me it is a lack of leadership just to put the question on the table and say: 'So what do you want with that?' It should have been sold – if that's the right word – differently with more information, showing more of what could happen, by [Premier League chief executive] Richard Masters. 그는 "운동했다고 하면 독기있는 걸 알기 때문에 좋게 봐주시는 게 있다. 저도 그런 기대를 저버리지 않게 더 열심히 한다. 운동선수는 끈기 때면 시체다. 항상 자기 자신을 이겨내야하기 때문이다. 물론 막상 연예계에 오니 저보다 잘생기고 예쁘고 연기도 잘하는 친구들이 너무 많다. 이 친구들을 이길 수 있는 방법을 지금도 연구 중이지만, 한 가지는 끈기와 독기다. 악바리처럼 해내려고 하는 것 같다"고 자신감을 보였다. (Courtesy Artis) Artis REIT president/CEO Armin Martens and the trust's management team say allegations by dissident shareholder Sandpiper Group amount to an "American-style smear campaign" and that the trust has consistently outperformed its peers since inception in 2005. The six-page response, published on Artis's website Thursday, refutes a series of claims by Sandpiper in a release made public on Oct. 7. Sandpiper claimed Artis (AX-UN-T) has underperformed for a variety of reasons and was seeking to have five of the trust's seven board members ousted and replaced with a slate of nominees it put forward. One of those existing board members, Victor Thielmann, who had been sitting as an independent, resigned this week. He was not immediately replaced. Sandpiper also objects to Artis REIT's strategy to spin off its retail assets into a separate, new Artis Retail REIT. Artis REIT sought "constructive engagement""We were disappointed that rather than constructively engage with us as we have repeatedly offered to do, (Sandpiper president Samir) Manji has instead been waiting in the wings to publicly launch an American-style smear campaign," said Martens in Thursday's release. "One can only conclude that the decision to launch personal attacks was made in an effort to distract from the fact that their so-called plan lacks any substantive or new ideas." The dispute will come to a head on Feb. 23, 2021 when a special meeting will be held to allow unitholders to elect a new board of trustees. In defending their record, management said Artis has outperformed the S&P/TSX Capped REIT Index with a total unitholder return of 198 per cent since 2005 and has outperformed the REIT index in 10 of the past 15 years. It further states that since the introduction of IFRS accounting in 2011, Artis has grown IFRS NAV per unit at a compound annual growth rate of two per cent to $15.40. Sandpiper said in its release Artis has grown NAV per unit at a rate of 2.9 per cent per year to $16.57. Artis has also undertaken several initiatives during the past few years to improve its performance, including: * its ongoing plan to divest about 1.3 billion in non-core assets; * a significant reduction in its exposure in the challenged Alberta market; * the repurchase of $280 million in units; * and a strategic review a year ago which ended with the plan to spin off its retail assets into a separate REIT. Artis's relationship with MarwestThe Artis release also takes exception to statements by Sandpiper that its board might not have always acted in the best interests of shareholders, due to conflicts of interest in dealings with companies connected to the Martens family, particularly Marwest. It calls the claims a "false and fabricated narrative." "Having reviewed Sandpiper's promotional materials, the false statements, and mischaracterizations show Mr. Manji either does not understand our business or is intentionally trying to mislead unitholders to get their vote," Martens said. "Given that the list of what they got wrong is very long, we feel it is appropriate to clarify certain points related to Marwest Group and Sandpiper's agenda now." Artis management contends it contracts multiple service providers for its properties and that since 2012 68 per cent of its development capital expenditure has gone to companies other than Marwest. It contends Marwest provided "top-tier service" and that fees have been "competitive with market rates." In contrast to Sandpiper's claim, Artis has spent $300 million on services from related parties since 2004, Artis says that figure represents contract values, not fees actually paid. It says since management was internalized in 2012, Marwest received $19.8 million for development and construction projects and $9.8 million for property management and leasing services. Finally, it says all fees paid to "Marwest and related parties" have been disclosed as required by IFRS. Sandpiper an activist shareholderMartens also attacked the timing of the Sandpiper initiative, noting the investor has a history of publicly challenging management at firms in which it invests. "At a time when steady, experienced leadership is needed and expected by unitholders, Mr. Manji is attempting to destabilize Artis and disrupt value-creating initiatives," he said in the release. "I want our investors to know we will not participate in the mud-slinging that Mr. Manji appears comfortable with. Artis will remain focused on the facts, continuing to deliver superior performance, and our plan to further unlock unitholder value." The release claims Manji and Sandpiper "avoided engagement with Artis" during the period prior to Artis' annual general meeting in September. It was just a few weeks after that meeting that Sandpiper made its dissident action public. Management says the board has met just once with Sandppiper, in 2018. "Sandpiper never once voiced opposition to any strategic initiatives, governance policies, nor the relationship with Marwest which it was well aware of from day one. Sandpiper also did not offer any strategic, constructive or new ideas," the release states. Largest unitholder backs SandpiperIt goes on to note Sandpiper has "no track record whatsoever of running a diversified commercial REIT" and that its strategy to create a plan of action after February's special meeting "is not a plan." "After being a unitholder for over 1,000 days and having multiple opportunities to engage with us, Mr. Manji is now saying he needs another 100 days." Martens said in the release. "Something doesn't add up. Let's be clear: Sandpiper has no plan, just a hidden agenda to help themselves." Since publishing its grievances, Sandpiper has earned the backing of Artis's largest shareholder, Jetport Inc. The investor, controlled by the estate of Tim Horton donuts cofounder Ron Joyce, released a letter of support on Oct. 19.
