| ‘The Craft: Legacy’ stars Fullerton trans actress Zoey Luna - Los Angeles Times Posted: 17 Oct 2020 09:48 PM PDT  A casting call from Blumhouse Productions sought a young trans actress last year for its reworking of "The Craft," a 90s cult classic following a coven of teen witches. Zoey Luna unknowingly dressed for the part on an otherwise uneventful day at home. She slipped a lilac corduroy overall dress on top of a red and blue stripped button-up before lacing up a pair of purple Doc Martin boots. Luna completed her outfit by putting on a leather jacket and applying shiny, metallic lipstick when a fleeting but foretelling thought came to mind. "Oh my God, I look like a teen witch," Luna said to herself. "I could totally be in '`The Craft.'" Two weeks later, a casting agent agreed, sending her an invitation to audition for the part of Lourdes, loosely conceptualized as a trans Latina witch booted from her home by a disapproving Catholic mother. A self-taught actress, Luna didn't have an agent at the time. As an outspoken trans rights activist, she did have a longstanding working relationship with GLAAD, an LGBTQ media advocacy group that offered input on the role. And Luna, 19, was no stranger to red carpets. Dante Alencastre's documentary "Raising Zoey" chronicled her transition as a young girl in Downey and premiered at Outfest in 2016. She followed up that project by appearing in the first episode of the HBO's four-part docuseries "15: A Quinceañera Story." By then, Luna already had aspirations of becoming an actress. "I came out of the womb knowing a few things," she says. "I knew I was a girl, and the other was that I was destined to be in front of the camera for the rest of my life." True to her passion, Luna landed a role in Rosario Dawson's short film "Boundless" and an appearance on the season finale of the FX series "Pose." But the Fullerton-based actress's biggest break awaited with Lourdes. After her second audition, Luna watched "The Craft" from beginning to end, something she hadn't done. The original film debuted in 1996, five years before Luna was born. Starring Robin Tunney and Fairuza Balk as coven sisters later pitted against each other in duel of good versus evil, it endures as a cult classic. "Something hit me," Luna recalls, after the viewing. "This is going to be monumental." In September 2019, "The Craft: Legacy" announced its cast, with Cailee Spaeny (Lily), Gideon Adlon (Frankie) and Lovie Simone (Tabby) joining Luna (Lourdes) in rounding out the new quartet of teen witches. Luna signed with Transgender Talent, an O.C.-based management company co-founded by Ann Thomas and Kendra Neuberger, in order to formally accept the role. Her major film debut is poised to be a celebratory moment for the trans community. In its latest annual report, GLAAD found that none of the eight major studios released a film in 2019 with any transgender characters, much less Latinx ones. This year will be different thanks to "The Craft: Legacy" alone when it arrives Oct. 28 to video on demand. "The Craft needed a type of queer energy," says Luna. "I'm really grateful for all the other trans kids that are going to get to see this film." Being the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Luna hopes young Latinas, trans or not, see themselves represented. She definitely sees her reflection in Lourdes, from feeling like an outsider in high school to being estranged from her own mother during auditions. As soon as filming started, the actress already planned her outfit for the red carpet premiere. But with its release coming amid a pandemic, everything's changed. There's always next time — a sense of optimism Luna didn't have when coronavirus started nixing future opportunities. But now things are looking up again. She moved into her first apartment in Fullerton. And thanks to Transgender Talent, her schedule is busy. "They really know how to work with Hollywood," says Luna. "Thomas has been able to get me so many good roles and I have so much coming up soon." But first is "The Craft: Legacy." Will the installment play more like a reboot or a sequel? Alan Shearer praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for changing his Manchester United side for their 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday. The Red Devils boss made five changes to the side that was beaten 6-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur last time out, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Mason Greenwood axed for the victory at St James' Park. Shearer claimed that the Manchester United squad needed freshening up following the dismal defeat a fortnight ago and that Solskjaer should be commended for his man management. United scored late with goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford Shearer picked out United midfielders Fernandes and Juan Mata as the key orchestrators of the victory in the north East. He added: 'Mata and Fernandes were so clever, they just went into the pockets in front of Newcastle's front four. 'If you give those two the right amount of time they will cause problems and they did that. 'They were too good on the ball, they showed a lot of creativity that Newcastle didn't have. Marcus Rashford was excellent as well.' It was a poor performance. Steve Bruce's advice for Harry Maguire was to play his way out of his troubled period. Be a man and front up, said his old Hull boss. Well, the Manchester United captain listened. And that, ultimately, was to Newcastle and Bruce's expense. Maguire's response to a week of scrutiny in which he was sent off for England - on the back of a turbulent summer off the field - was to drag his side level with a clever first-half header, cancelling out Newcastle's second-minute opener.  Harry Maguire scored to put a tough week to bed to give Man Untied a 4-1 win at Newcastle  The United captain headed in a first-half equaliser to guide the Red Devils to victory If only the 27-year-old had been as smart with his head before landing himself in a Greek prison cell in August. But here it was Maguire who got United out of jail with his timely equaliser before playing a telling part in the goal that belatedly put them in front four minutes from the end. It was a shame for him that the majority of the country did not witness his evening of redemption. The greed of pay-per-view saw to that. So for those who did not see the game, here's a brief summary - United won 4-1 but it could have been 14-1. Maguire was excellent, but so, too, were fellow scorers Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer emerged afterwards to announce, 'Our season started today'. Bold words, but anything other than victory against a subservient Newcastle would have led to questions over the manager's future. So let's temper the excitement for now, even if United did create enough chances - 28 shots on goal - to win this several times over.  Bruno Fernandes also shone as Manchester United dominated the game at St James' Park  Maguire (left) has been in poor form for both club and country over the past few weeks Maguire himself twice came close to scoring what could have been the winner at 1-1, and that would have been entirely deserved for a performance that said much about his character. 'It was a great result led by a very inspirational captain,' said Solskjaer. 'It was the right response from him. He was inspirational in the build-up to the game too. I'm very pleased for him.' It would have been a travesty had United not won this, but that looked likely approaching the final five minutes. Then, with Newcastle on the attack, Maguire intercepted and cushioned a header to a team-mate to kickstart a move that was climaxed when Fernandes lifted into the top corner from Rashford's slick pass. The classy finish atoned for an earlier penalty miss, his first in 11 attempts for United.  United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to ace Paul Pogba (above) from the starting line-up Aaron Wan-Bissaka smashed his first for the club in stoppage-time and Rashford skipped clear to add another. 'We were too naive towards the end and I don't think the scoreline was a true reflection of the game,' said Bruce. He was, albeit unintentionally, right. Where he was on the money was in declaring on the eve of the game that Maguire - who he signed for Hull in 2014 - had the required resilience to recover from a torturous few days. Maguire's inclusion was only confirmed an hour before kick-off. Solskjaer had given himself an out by claiming that he returned from England duty with a 'knock'. A knock to his confidence, perhaps. But his selection was a show of faith, for never mind the trauma of his international escapades, Maguire could have been axed for his shambolic showing in the 6-1 home defeat by Spurs a fortnight ago.  United began terribly as Emil Krafth (left)'s cross was diverted into his net by Luke Shaw (right) Solskjaer's response to that humiliation was to make five changes. He dropped Paul Pogba just 24 hours after the club triggered a one-year extension on his contract. That, though, was plainly a move by the hierarchy to protect his value and prevent him leaving on a free. For on the pitch Pogba is doing little to warrant contractual reward. This team-sheet smacked of the boss picking the players he believes he can trust. And that said little for those he left out when, after just 102 seconds, United fell behind. Mercifully for Maguire, he was not among those to whom you could attach blame. But that list did include the usual suspects. Namely Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and David de Gea. Lindelof was turned by Callum Wilson with an alarming ease and Newcastle worked the ball wide to Emil Krafth.  Despite the early setback, United controlled the game with Marcus Rashford (right) impressing  Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow (right) pulled off some super stops to deny the visitors  David De Gea (middle) pulled off a fine stop to stop Callum Wilsom giving the Toon the lead  United won a penalty in the second-half but Karl Darlow was equal to Bruno Fernandes' effort He delivered low but Shaw's unconvincing attempt to block the cross caused the ball to bounce off his out-stretched boot and sail between De Gea and his near post. The goalkeeper did his best impression of wrong-footed, but it looked more like a case of flat-footed on replay. The concession could have marked the onset of another United collapse, but Newcastle are not Tottenham. Instead, the hosts retreated and Maguire flashed home from Mata's corner on 23 minutes. United should have led entering the break but Jamaal Lascelles denied Rashford, the home skipper clearing from the line. And it was the turn of goalkeeper Karl Darlow to thwart the England forward on the stroke of half-time when smuggling a low fizzer around the upright. While that was a fine stop it did not compare to the goal-line claw of De Gea early in the second half. Allan Saint-Maximin dug out a cross from the left and Wilson extended a toe to turn on target from barely three yards out. Somehow, De Gea scooped clear.  Fernandes made amends on 86 minutes to put United in front on the counter attack  Aaron Wan-Bissaka made it 3-1 to Manchester United as the clock hit the 90-minute mark  Rashford (left) added gloss to the scoreline by netting a fourth with the last kick of the game Not to be outdone Darlow then produced a flying save from Fernandes' penalty on 58 minutes after Jamal Lewis had connected with Rashford inside the area, a spot-kick only awarded after VAR intervention. From the resulting corner Maguire headed for the bottom corner - again - only for Shelvey to hack clear. Maguire then took aim for the same spot with a low drive from distance and was unlucky when it licked the base of the post. But Fernandes made no mistake following a devastating counter before Wan-Bissaka and Rashford produced equally uncompromising finishes to cap a much-needed victory, for both Solskjaer and his captain.
