Israel has announced the country will be heading into a two week long lockdown, with the option to extend for another two weeks if the desired drop in cases is not recorded.

The regulations of the lockdown include not travelling more than a kilometer from one's home, as well as restricting visits to other people's houses. All retail is expected to cease, except for delivery services and stores who do not service customers directly. The 'green tourism islands' of the Dead Sea and Eilat will also be closed.

This is the third lockdown Israel will enter since the pandemic hit the country; the first one was imposed in March and the second in late September. It comes as Israel continues to vaccinate people, with more than 150,000 people haveing already received the vaccine since Thursday.

More than 3,136 people have died from COVID-19 in Israel while the number of active cases stands at 28,308.

On Thursday, Israel's pandemic czar, Prof. Nachman Ash, said that a two week lockdown is too short and the public should prepare for a longer period of restrictions.

He estimated that given the vaccine rollout, this will be Israel’s last lockdown, “We are tired of lockdowns, all of us, and I hope that we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and the way out of this pandemic."
