A woman who was hit by a car on the Mexican side of the San Ysidro Port of Entry when the driver sped across the border Tuesday died hours later, Baja California health officials said Wednesday.
The name of the 47-year-old woman, who was in a wheelchair, was not released. She died at a hospital.
The crash also killed the driver, a 27-year-old Orange County man, and injured a 70-year-old man on the Mexican side of the border.
The injured man — he suffered bruises and scratches — was treated at a hospital, then released Tuesday night. Witnesses said the man who was injured and the woman who was killed were vendors.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver — who was a Santa Ana resident — drove across the border at high speed about 2:15 p.m. and ended up crashing into a metal barrier in a lane that had been closed to traffic.
CHP Officer Salvador Castro said it was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
The wrecked car — a Hyundai sedan, Castro said — was in lane No. 28 for hours Tuesday while authorities investigated the crash. At least one lane that appeared to be open before the crash was closed during the investigation.
Juan Gallego, who cleans cars on the Mexican side of the border, lit a candle near the crash site in honor of the driver.
“I wanted to light a candle,” he said. “I didn’t know him, but he’s someone who’s no longer with us. May God forgive him if he took an innocent life.”
