Starting from August 16, on Monday, travellers from two Western Balkan countries – Kosovo and North Macedonia – will be unable to enter the territory of Finland if they aren’t fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with one of the vaccines accepted by the Finnish authorities as proof of immunity for travel.

The decision has been taken last Thursday, on August 12, after the Government of Finland decided to amend entry restrictions on arrivals from outside the EU and Schengen Area, based on the incidence rates.

The decision of August 5, 2021, is amended so that the entry restrictions are returned to the residents of Kosovo in traffic arriving in Finland from Kosovo and to the residents of northern Macedonia in traffic arriving in Finland from northern Macedonia,” the Finnish Ministry of the Interior notes in a press release annoying the new decision.

Both countries have recorded a spike up in the number of COVOID-19 cases recently. While Kosovo, home to 1.873 million residents, has recorded 888 cases in the last 24 hours, North Macedonia, with counts a population of 2.077 million, has recorded 588 cases.

The same clarifies that following the decision, travellers from these two countries who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 can enter only if:

  • They are returning to Finland
  • They are returning to other EU or Schengen Area countries
  • They are transiting
  • Other purposes of entry listed as essential by the Finnish authorities

The move follows a decision taken last week, when Finland reimposed the entry ban on non-vaccinated travellers from Azerbaijan, Japan, Moldova, Serbia, Singapore, and South Korea, which has been effective since Monday.

On the same day, the entry ban on travellers from Ukraine was also put to an end.

Vaccinated travellers coming from these countries should present proof that they have been vaccinated with one of the following vaccines in order to be able to enter the country:

  • Comirnaty Pfizer-BioNTech
  • Spikevax, formerly Moderna
  • Vaxzevria, formerly AstraZeneca
  • Janssen (Johnson & Johnson)
  • BIBP / Sinopharm
  • Covishield
  • CoronaVac
