“Enter Zen from here.” These are the words I say to myself when I am working too long and feeling overwhelmed. I look over to see my adorable cat snoozing next to me and say the words while thinking of the cuddly feeling I have in my heart.
“Enter Zen from here.” These are the words I say to myself when I’m at a concert and feeling a bit claustrophobic being surrounded by too many people and thinking about all the things I should be doing instead of being here. I pause, feel the beats in my chest, and say to myself, “Enter Zen from here.”
Mantras can be powerful, and I’ve gotten to a point where I rely on them quite a bit to achieve my goal of what I call “being the calm.” There are a few other phrases I have put on repeat for a while now, like “just keep swimming” and “those who matter don’t mind.” But the one that’s been my source of serenity lately is “Enter Zen from here.”
I learned about it while reading “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle. He tells the story of a young man who is trying to learn to be present in the moment. I won’t recount the story here as I am not using the phrase the same way it was presented in the book. My takeaway was that there are little passages around us that can lead us out of the noise and into a place of peace. They are all around us, we just have to find them.
The next time you are feeling stressed, agitated, or overwhelmed in a place where you should be enjoying yourself, stop (you might even close your eyes). Listen or feel for the passage (it might be a bird singing, the wind blowing, or your own heart beating), and say, “Enter Zen from here” while trying to hold on to it.
