The Ottawa Senators signed prospect Jake Sanderson to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Sunday. The deal is effective immediately.

The 19-year-old defenseman just finished his second collegiate season with the University of North Dakota, scoring eight goals and racking up 18 assists in just 23 games. The Senators picked Sanderson No. 5 in the 2020 NHL Draft.

"An important cog to our future on defense, Jake is an effortless skater who possesses all the tools to be a complete NHL defenseman," Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorion said in a release. "A mature leader despite his young age, he played big minutes in college with a blend of poise and confidence. While he still has progress to make in overcoming a current injury, we are hopeful of seeing him in our lineup before the end of the season."

Sanderson — who represented the United States as the 2022 Winter Olympics — is "in the midst of recovery from a hand injury," the team said, but could appear in regular-season games for Ottawa within the month.

The Senators are 23-36-6 on the season, sitting at seventh in the Atlantic Division with 52 points.
