NEW ORLEANS --- Rumor has it that in pickup games among the Carolina Basketball family, one thing trumps all on the court: did you or did you not deliver a national championship banner to the Smith Center rafters? The ones that did, they have the upper hand when it comes to any debatable calls.
“A person that really does it is Kenny Williams," Armando Bacot said. "He always comes back to play pickup and let's say a call goes one way or another, the first thing he does is point up to the 2017 banner, so if we get one, he won’t be able to do that anymore. We could do that to a lot of the older guys, too. It’d be great to have that banner up there because that’s bragging rights for all the former players coming back."
Added Caleb Love, “Winning the national championship, I guess you get the luxury of calling not so good calls or getting calls that you aren’t supposed to get. All you have to do is say I've got a banner up. I guess I’m going to be able to use that after we win this.”
For Love, this season has been one of perseverance, with the Tar Heels soaring above the early season criticism.
“It would mean a lot especially with the season we’ve had and the people that doubted us," Love said. "They didn’t think we’d get this far. They didn’t even think we’d get to the tournament. It would be great for me but I feel it would be more great for my teammates and Coach Davis. I want to win it for them.”
Bacot can appreciate the moment, knowing just how exclusive this opportunity is that awaits Carolina in the title game: "It would be amazing. Coach May and Coach Manuel joke with us all the time. They say it’s a club, then it’s a VIP section, then it’s another section that has a door that you have to get through and that’s where the national champions are at. To be a part of that would be amazing.”
If the Tar Heels are the ones cutting down the nets on Monday night, the players on this team would gain entry into one of most elite clubs that Chapel Hill has to offer, etching their name onto the guest list forever. From New Orleans, I’m Taylor Vippolis, for Inside Carolina.
