TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Drivers are now being rerouted to the Nogales Port of Entry following the closure of the Lukeville Port of Entry.
Traffic at the Nogales Port of Entry is pretty busy, but that's considered normal, according to a security officer working there.
The most recent data from the U.S. Department of Transportation reveals that over 3,100 cars crossed through the Lukeville Port in October. However, those drivers will now be redirected.
You can still get to Rocky Point despite the closure of the Lukeville Point of Entry.
Former Tucson Sector Border Chief, Victor Manjarrez, expressed, "You got the travel that goes from Tucson, Phoenix area, southern Arizona to Rocky Point, that's a big deal because that's really inconvenient if Lukeville is shut down; you gotta go through Nogales."
TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — The Lukeville Port of Entry closed Sunday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m. indefinitely.
Drivers heading through the border are now dealing with a detour that adds an extra four hours to their trip. After working in the Border Patrol for 35 years, Victor has never seen the Lukeville Port closed.
"That's a little disheartening because it tells me the crime activity is so high that field officers had no other recourse," said Manjarrez.
Victor also mentioned that the influx of people coming into the Nogales Port of Entry will strain the resources the city of Tucson has for asylum seekers.
"Tucson is going to feel a big brunt of this. They've been welcoming to people that have been distraught, and that's a good sentiment, but it could be detrimental to the services," according to Manjarrez.
There is no word yet on when the Lukeville Port of Entry will reopen.
