The most popular English Wikipedia page of the year was the online encyclopedia’s entry on the ChatGPS artificial intelligence program, which drew nearly 50 million pageviews, the website’s parent company stated Tuesday.
More than 84 billion users read Wikipedia this year, according to the Wikimedia Foundation.
The second-most read entry on 2023 was a rundown of deaths among prominent figures including actor Matthew Perry, statesman Henry Kissinger and football player Dick Butkus. That list, which does well on the site every year, got 42,666,860 pageviews.
Rounding out the top three was the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which was clicked on by more than 38 million people. The match ended with Australia defeating India.
“The most-viewed Wikipedia articles of 2023 tell the story of you and society at large seeking out knowledge about our ever-changing world from the world’s largest encyclopedia,” according to Wikimedia.
The site was launched in January 2001. It describes itself as “a free-content online encyclopedia written and maintained by a community of volunteers, collectively known as Wikipedians.”
