The 'peasant' binge drinker who went global - and what it says about modern China - BBC News Posted: 23 Oct 2019 11:42 PM PDT What do you get when you mix a pint of beer, a can of Pepsi, a huge glass of flaming spirits, and a raw egg? For Liu Shichao - who filmed himself downing the lot in eight seconds - you get 12 million views on Twitter and a worldwide fanbase. And that video wasn't a one-off. In another clip, he smokes a cigarette, ignites six cocktails, and swallows them all (800,000 views on Twitter). In another, he mixes vodka, whisky, red wine, beer - and, of course, the trademark egg - and drinks it like water (a mere 500,000 views). But who is Liu Shichao? What is he doing to his body? And what do his viral videos tell us about China's thirst for alcohol? The beginning of the bingeLiu filmed his first video - seven bottles of lager in 50 seconds - three years ago. "One day I saw a video of people drinking beer," he tells the BBC from China. "I thought, I can do that too." He started posting to the Chinese video-sharing site Kuaishou and gained fans quickly. "The reason my videos are so short is that Kuaishou only allowed one-minute videos," he says. "We needed to drink very fast to finish them within the time limit." At his peak, Liu had 470,000 followers - and received up to 10,000 Yuan a month ($1,400; £1,100) in donations - before Kuaishou shut down his live-streaming account because of the unhealthy content. But in August, one of his Kuaishou videos was shared on Twitter, and, for the first time, Liu went viral outside China. "People were telling me I was popular on Twitter," he says. "I replied: 'What's Twitter?' I had no idea." 'My wife is annoyed'Liu is 33, lives in Hebei (a province near Beijing) and calls himself a "peasant". He doesn't speak English and uses translation software to post online. "At first, I didn't know any social media platforms," he says. "I'm from a rural area." Twitter, like many western sites, is blocked in China, so he accessed it via a Virtual Private Network, which disguises online locations. He gained 60,000 followers in less than six weeks. "The foreign fans are very passionate and fun," he says. "A Turkish man asked for my address so he could send me Turkish beer." His videos still earn him money - his Twitter links to his PayPal account - but they are not (yet) his main income. He earns a living selling meat online, and used to run a restaurant. Most of Liu's supporters are men - "I guess they also love drinking, maybe there is a little sense of jealousy" - but his wife does not share their admiration. "She is annoyed and is worried about my health," he says. "We often argue about this." Is she right to worry?Liu insists he is not an alcoholic. "I never drink when I'm alone," he says. "Those real alcoholic people from northern China will drink alone." He also insists he feels no ill-effects after his stunts. "I can really drink," he says, which is fairly indisputable. He does, however, advise caution. "All the videos are within the scope of ability," he posted this week. "Teenagers are not allowed to imitate." But Dr Sara Kayat, a doctor in London, says - despite his iron constitution - Liu risks passing out, vomiting, and even asphyxiation. There are also long-term dangers, she says. "Binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to mental health problems and liver damage, and are associated with increased blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, and even some cancers." The rise of Chinese binge drinkingAs China has grown richer, so too has its appetite for alcohol. In 2003, according to World Health Organization (WHO) data, 4% of Chinese people had "binge drunk" in the past 30 days. By 2016, that was up to 23%. The figures were particularly stark for men in China - 36% were considered binge drinkers, compared to 7.5% in 2003. Dr Jason Jiang - an alcohol policy expert from La Trobe University in Melbourne, who has written widely about alcohol in China - said Liu is part of a trend. "From my point of view, his drinking behaviour is too dangerous," he says. "And the problem is many young people love his tweets, and this is even more problematic. "I have seen a few other similar posts online from other young people, and they are keen to show their special drinking skills and be proud of it. "Although the effects of excessive drinking on health (cirrhosis of the liver and cancer) may not been seen in the short term, alcohol abuse increases risks for other alcohol-related harms, such as violence, fall and traffic injuries." Getty Alcohol in China
Liu, though, is enjoying his celebrity too much to put down the beer. Or, for that matter, the wine, the spirits, the cigarettes, or the eggs. "Thank you very much for your love and support," he posted this month. "I'm an ordinary person in rural China. I'm very glad to meet you. I'll try my best to send some more wonderful videos later. I love you." And then, with the click of a play button, he mixes beer, rice wine, spirits, a can of Red Bull, and an egg, and downs the lot in eight seconds. Posted: 23 Oct 2019 10:38 PM PDT Hailey Bieber has broken her silence after Selena Gomez seemingly criticised her ex Justin Bieber for settling down with Hailey in a new song. The model posted a screenshot of a song called I'll Kill You on her Instagram story, with no caption included. It suggests it's her way of silencing things between the two after former Disney Channel star Selena made a dig at the loved-up couple. Just a few weeks after high-school sweethearts Hailey and Justin tied the knot, Selena sang about the pain of heartbreak in her new track Lose You To Love Me. Her scathing lyrics were convincingly aimed at her ex boyfriend Justin as he got engaged to Vogue model Hailey just two months after they split. ![]() Selena and Justin were together from 2009 to 2017, and shortly after Selena dated The Weeknd for a brief time. However, the long-time lovers called it quits in March and by July Justin was engaged to his other ex Hailey. Justin and Hailey were married in the September of that year and they got married for a second time in recent months. ![]() The lyrics read: "I gave my all and they all know it / You turned me down, and now it's showing / In two months you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it." Another chorus added: "Cause it wasn't yours / You promised the world / Made her more of a woman / I needed to lose you to find me." ![]() Fans put the feelers out on social media as they claimed Selena was responding to her ex's marriage to Hailey. "Justin hiding from Hailey to listen to Selena's new song #LoseYouToLoveMe." "If Selena wants to write about Justin Bieber, LET HER. She can heal however she needs to and wants to. Everyone deals with their own pain in different ways. Goodbye. #LoseYouToLoveMe." Messi's historic goal helps Barcelona edge Slavia Prague - Yahoo Sports Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:25 PM PDT ![]() Lionel Messi gets past Slavia's David Hovorka (AFP Photo/JOE KLAMAR) Prague (AFP) - Lionel Messi claimed another goal-scoring record as Barcelona edged a spirited Slavia Prague 2-1 on Wednesday to stay top of Champions League Group F. Messi opened the scoring after three minutes, beating Slavia goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar with a low left-footed shot to become the first player ever to score at least once in 15 consecutive Champions League seasons. The 32-year-old Argentinian first robbed midfielder Petr Sevcik outside the Slavia box before an exchange with Arthur put him neatly through the static Slavia defence. Barca earned a second on 57 minutes when Slavia winger Peter Olayinka deflected a Luis Suarez close-range shot from an impossible angle into his own net as the hosts failed to clear Messi's free kick. Olayinka sealed Barca's sixth straight competitive win but deprived Suarez of a goal that would end his four-year drought in away games in European cup competitions. Before that, left-back Jan Boril equalised for Slavia five minutes after half-time, capitalising on a superb pass threaded by Lukas Masopust that found him one-on-one with goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen. Barcelona top Group F with seven points from three games and are three ahead of Inter Milan who beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0. Slavia sit at the bottom with a single point. "The result could have been better, but Slavia took risks, they played very well and made us defend a lot," said Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde. "We started very well, we dominated the game, but we also lost the ball a few times and they threatened -- they really made us suffer because when they struggle, they boost their offence and that's exactly what they did today." He added: "We are at the top of the table and we play the next two games at home. They will show us where we are." Commenting on Messi making history, Valverde said: "It is really an incredible record. I hope Leo will continue to do well." Slavia coach Jindrich Trpisovsky bemoaned Slavia's bad luck with the ugly second goal. "It's a shame to lose with a goal like this," he said. - 'Fantastic game' - Valverde made two changes from last weekend's 3-0 win at Eibar, calling up Nelson Semedo and Gerard Pique to replace Samuel Umtiti and Sergi Roberto, both sidelined with knee injuries. Jaroslav Zeleny almost grabbed a goal for Slavia on 20 minutes after a superb pass from Boril, but his shot bounced off the feet of a diving ter Stegen. At the other end of the pitch, Messi curled a free kick into the Slavia box but Clement Lenglet's poke was too weak to surprise Kolar, while minutes later Suarez blasted the ball over the crossbar. Slavia came close again when Zeleny put through Masopust whose low shot was stopped by ter Stegen, and only seconds later the German keeper had a hard time clearing Olayinka's shot over the crossbar. Kolar then denied Suarez after a fine pass from Messi before kicking out Frenkie de Jong's powerful low attempt from inside the box. Slavia had a third good chance just before half-time, but Lukas Masopust missed narrowly with a low left-footed effort across the goal. "The opening minutes were dreadful, but if I look beyond the first twenty minutes I must say the boys played a fantastic game," said Trpisovsky. After the break, Slavia midfielder Nicolae Stanciu missed narrowly from long range and skipper Tomas Soucek headed over the crossbar. Messi saw two shots cleared by Kolar and failed to finish into a gaping goal, while Suarez's low shot went just wide. Slavia put the visitors under heavy pressure in the closing minutes but the Barcelona defence did a good job blocking all their shots and ter Stegen stopped Olayinka's stoppage-time header on the line. Boeing sees 737 MAX U.S. approval before year-end, shares rise - Reuters Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:10 PM PDT (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Wednesday it still expects U.S. regulatory approval for its grounded 737 MAX in the fourth quarter, sending its shares higher despite a slump in quarterly profit. The world's largest planemaker also said it was cutting production of its flagship Dreamliner, delaying plans to step up output of its money-spinning 737 line, and also delaying the arrival of a successor to its 777 mini-jumbo. These fresh industrial setbacks heaped pressure on a newly rejigged senior management team fighting to repair trust with airline customers and passengers shaken by an eight-month safety ban on its 737 MAX here following two deadly crashes. Boeing did not take fresh charges on top of the estimated $8 billion price tag for the MAX crisis, but warned of pressure on its cash flow until deliveries and production resume at normal levels. The planemaker separately faces a slew of investigations by regulators, U.S. Congress, and the Department of Justice over its development of the 737 MAX, its previously best-selling workhorse for short-haul travel. Despite these risks, Boeing shares were up 0.6% at $339.13 in afternoon trading, as its steady estimate of a 737 MAX return in the fourth quarter appeared to eclipse the downside of the 787 production cut due to a drought of orders from China amid trade tensions, an analyst said. "The 787 cut appears to be mostly tied to China trade negotiations, which at least have the potential to improve over the next 12-months," said Seaport Global analyst Josh Sullivan. On Tuesday, the company ousted the top executive of its crucial commercial airplanes division, Kevin McAllister, in an unexpected management shakeup related to the MAX crisis that senior industry sources say puts Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg squarely in the firing line in the event of further revelations or if the company fails to recover from the MAX crisis. Muilenburg, stripped of his board chairman title earlier this month, is set to testify before U.S. lawmakers over two days in Washington next week. "I anticipate there will be tough questions, challenging questions, a lot of scrutiny," he told analysts and journalists on a conference call. "And frankly, we support the scrutiny on the work that we're doing." REGRETEarlier in the call, Muilenburg expressed regret over instant messages, first published by Reuters on Friday, in which a former Boeing pilot describes erratic simulator behavior of software now linked to both crashes. The 2016 messages, sent months before the aircraft entered service, plunged Boeing into a media firestorm and erased some $14 billion of its market value as the FAA and lawmakers demanded explanations on their content and delayed release. Boeing's timeline of a fourth-quarter MAX return compares to a January target from European regulators, while major U.S. carriers United, Southwest, and American were all drawing up schedules without the MAX until next year. FILE PHOTO: Aerial photos showing Boeing 737 Max airplanes parked at Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington, U.S. October 20, 2019. Picture taken October 20, 2019. REUTERS/Gary He/File Photo Asked about potential delays from overseas regulators which also must approve the MAX's return, Muilenburg said, "it could well be that approvals will vary by jurisdiction." "And again, the regulators will make that decision. Ultimately, it will be their timeline," he said. Muilenburg said the company was making "daily" progress on testing the final software fix for the 737 MAX and developing related training materials, though the FAA said on Tuesday it would need at least several more weeks for review. The company could consider cutting or halting 737 production if regulatory approvals are further delayed, Muilenburg said, though there was no immediate announcement of job cuts. On Wednesday, the U.S. manufacturer reported a 53% drop in quarterly profit and a negative free cash flow of $2.89 billion in the quarter, compared with a positive free cash flow of $4.10 billion a year earlier. Core operating earnings fell to $895 million or $1.45 per share, from $1.89 billion or $3.58 per share, a year earlier. NEW SETBACKSThe MAX crisis, which has consumed the company, has eclipsed work on a potential new mid-market airplane codenamed NMA, and other industrial setbacks broadened pressure on the company's new commercial leadership. On Tuesday, Boeing named veteran executive Stan Deal, who had been running its two-year-old Global Services Division, to the top job at commercial airplanes. Deal's challenge is to get the MAX back into service globally while simultaneously handling new aircraft deliveries and boosting 737 production. That's seen as one of the most formidable logistical challenges in the industry's history. After the 737 MAX safety ban in March, Boeing cut 737 monthly production from 52 aircraft to 42 and halted deliveries, cutting off a key source of cash and hitting margins. Boeing's previous schedule to hit a record manufacturing rate of 57 single-aisle jets per month by June 2020, after incrementally returning to pre-crash levels, was now delayed until late 2020, the company said. Muilenburg also said General Electric (GE.N) was making "good progress" addressing problems with its GE9X engine for the 777X twin-aisle, and the aircraft was still on track for a first flight in early 2020. But Boeing was now targeting early 2021 for the first delivery of the 777X, and sees 3 total 777-program deliveries per month in 2020, verses 3.5 per month in 2019, Muilenburg said. With the 777-8 and 777-9, Boeing aims to maintain its grip on the 'mini-jumbo' market by leap-frogging rival Airbus' (AIR.PA) 365-seat A350-1000 and scooping up fresh orders following the demise of the A380 superjumbo. Citing global trade tensions and a lack of orders from China, America's largest exporter was also reducing the 787 Dreamliner production rate to 12 airplanes per month for approximately two years beginning in late 2020. Boeing faced additional uncertainty over future production rates for its Dreamliner earlier this month from lost business, theoretically putting a hole in production after Boeing increased its build-rate to 14 aircraft per month from 12 at twin U.S. factories. Chargers stumped by league-worst goal-to-go turnovers - OCRegister Posted: 23 Oct 2019 08:11 PM PDT ![]() COSTA MESA — When there's nowhere else to go, the Chargers haven't been able to find the end zone on five particular occasions this season. Five costly and memorable occasions. No team in the NFL has more turnovers in goal-to-go situations. Twenty-six teams have none or one goal-to-go turnover, and 17 teams have a clean record. The Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers are tied for second with three goal-to-go turnovers. The undefeated 49ers can afford such mistakes because they're winning by wide margins. The Chargers, whose five defeats this season have all come by one score, have paid the price for their ill-timed blunders. "We do know the consequences of those (turnovers) have been severe," quarterback Philip Rivers said Wednesday. Four of the five goal-to-go turnovers have come during three losses. If the Chargers scored touchdowns on those drives, they might have entered Week 8 with a record of 5-2. Instead, they're 2-5, and they'll go to Soldier Field with a must-win situation Sunday against the Chicago Bears. The Chargers are well aware of these issues, but have been unable to correct them. In Week 5, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn was criticized for running a failed jet sweep with Austin Ekeler instead of handing it to Melvin Gordon for a one-yard touchdown run before halftime against the Denver Broncos. Last week, Lynn gave it to Gordon at the 1-yard line against the Tennessee Titans. He was stopped twice and fumbled to ball away on the second try, which led to more criticism for Lynn. Perhaps it's not the plays being called. It goes back to Lynn's simplistic answer, the one he's given all season — they must execute better. "I don't think we can go out there and do a drill to help us not turn it over," Rivers said. "Nobody is trying to (turn it over). … I don't know if there is anything that you can say, 'Oh yeah, we got that fixed today.' I think, unfortunately, those things happen." The goal-line mistakes have affected the Chargers' running backs mentally. Ekeler didn't reach with the ball to try to break the plane on his 16-yard catch that was initially ruled a touchdown, then reversed and spotted at the 1-yard line in the final minute against the Titans. He admitted he didn't extend because he has multiple goal-line fumbles this season. Gordon knows not to switch hands with the football in traffic, but he desperately wanted to make the winning-play after a struggling start to the season. He went for the reach and lost the ball before crossing the end zone. "I never do that," Gordon said about switching hands. "I pride myself on not fumbling, especially after my rookie year, and they caught me slipping." Gordon, who had six fumbles in his rookie year, only had one fumble in each of the past two seasons. He already has two in three games this season. "In critical situations, just fall back on your technique and fundamentals," Lynn said about Gordon's costly fumble. "You'll always prevail when you can do that. That was a situation where he should have had two hands on the ball the whole time. He was trying to, I guess maybe reach a little bit and get the ball to the end zone." CHARGERS' FIVE GOAL-TO-GO TURNOVERS1. Rivers' interception to Malik Hooker vs. Indianapolis Colts, Week 1, 4th quarter, 2nd-and-7, 8:39 This one didn't cost the Chargers a victory, but it forced them into overtime. The Colts scored a touchdown on the following drive and had the game-tying 2-point conversion after Hooker's one-handed takeaway in front of wide receiver Keenan Allen. 2. Ekeler's goal-line fumble vs. Detroit Lions, Week 2, 3rd quarter, 1st-and-1, 8:32 Ekeler scored a 1-yard touchdown by jumping over the Lions' defense in the first quarter, so why not do it again? Ekeler lost the football on his second jump, and it came on a drive that had two touchdowns called back by penalty. The Chargers didn't score in the second half and lost 13-10. 3. Ekeler's jet sweep fumble vs. Denver Broncos, Week 5, 2nd quarter, 4th-and-1, 7 seconds Rivers gave a fake handoff to Gordon and tossed it to Ekeler, who ran in front of Gordon. As Ekeler made his way around the left side of the field, he was hit by Kareem Jackson during his extension. Ekeler lost the ball before hitting the pylon and the Chargers entered halftime with a 17-0 deficit before losing 20-13. Rivers defended Ekeler's reach. "Ekeler's (fumble) against Denver, it's fourth down," Rivers said. "There's no time on the clock. You have to reach and try to score that ball. I don't know how that one really even counts (as a goal-to-go turnover)." 4. Rivers' interception to Alexander Johnson vs. Denver Broncos, Week 5, 3rd quarter, 3rd-and-2, 2:14 Rivers couldn't defend this one. He said it was a bad decision on his part. Johnson jumped in front of wide receiver Mike Williams in the end zone to keep the Chargers scoreless and gave the Broncos their third takeaway of the game. A few minutes later, Desmond King had touchdown punt return. If Ekeler and Rivers don't turn it over, the Chargers might have taken the lead after King's run. 5. Gordon's goal-line fumble vs. Tennessee Titans, Week 7, 4th quarter, 2nd-and-1, 19 seconds Gordon was given the ball because he had 28 career rushing touchdowns. He couldn't get No. 29, and he had two tries. He was ruled to have been stopped short of the goal line on first down before his fumble on second. The Chargers lost 23-20. "It was just unfortunate because that young man has scored more touchdowns than anyone on this team, I think in the last three years," Lynn said. "That's what he's made for — those situations right there. Technique and fundamentals right there would have helped him a lot." Four victim families reach a settlement with Boeing after Lion Air plane crash - CNN Posted: 23 Oct 2019 07:18 PM PDT "We represent 46 victim families [in the Lion Air plane crash]. We reached an agreement on four of those cases," said Mark Lindquist of Herrmann Law Group. "Negotiations are ongoing. Our goal are justice for the victims, accountability from Boeing and safer skies for everyone-- whether we get there by settlement or by trial." Lindquist said his firm started the negotiating process with victims who were single and childless and will move on to victims who have spouses and children. He says when victims have a spouse and/or children, "full and fair compensation is going be a larger amount...We have to look out for those children who are going to grow up without with a parent." Lindquist said it's impossible to say how long negotiations will take for the other 42 families. Herrmann Law Group also represents four families in the Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 on board in March. The Ethiopian Airlines aircraft was also a Boeing 737 Max. Earlier Wednesday, the families of victims in the Lion Air crash were told by Indonesian investigators that poor regulatory oversight and the design of Boeing's 737 Max contributed to the fatal disaster. Investigators provided victims' relatives with a summary of their final report on the crash. Peter Pedraza, a spokesman for Boeing (BA), said the company would not comment on the lawsuit directly. "We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all those onboard Lion Air Flight 610," he said. Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:38 PM PDT LOS ANGELES -- Five years ago this week, in the first official statement from Los Angeles' newly-awarded Major League Soccer franchise, Henry Nguyen, the club's managing partner at the time, laid out a vision for something no team in the league had become. "We believe this team can become one of the most outstanding clubs in [MLS] and a globally recognized brand," said Nguyen. Considering the league had just folded Chivas USA after a disastrous 10-year existence sharing a stadium with the LA Galaxy in Carson, a healthy level of skepticism was understandable. Nobody would have blamed Nguyen for being more modest in his stated aspirations, but modesty was never going to be LAFC's style. Since then, the organization has walked the walk. Not only does the team play some of the most attractive, attacking soccer in the league under former United States men's national team manager Bob Bradley, it does so in a beautiful downtown stadium where the in-game atmosphere is as good or better than any other sports team in town. - Stream MLS games LIVE on ESPN+ LAFC set the single-season points record for an expansion team in 2018 and backed it up by turning in the most dominant regular season in league history in their second year. Mexican international Carlos Vela is re-writing the league's record book and leads a team with an exciting mix of diverse young talent, but for all LAFC's near-immediate success, there are two glaring boxes it has yet to check: beat the Galaxy and win a playoff game. Which is why Thursday's first-ever postseason "El Trafico" match (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Banc of California Stadium doesn't feel like just another conference semifinal. The stakes are much bigger than that. These teams aren't just fighting to advance in this postseason; they're fighting for their place in the market. For LAFC, it would be hard for the team to classify the season as a success if it ends with yet another loss to the Galaxy. Conversely, a win would instantly become a seminal moment in club history and keep alive the possibility of finishing the year as the best team in league history. But how did they get here? And how have they climbed so high so quickly? On the day LAFC was formally announced, it hadn't yet settled on colors or unveiled a crest. Los Angeles Football Club was still just a placeholder name and when MLS commissioner Don Garber took the podium at the initial press conference, he wasn't there to introduce a team so much as a concept. "We are here to announce a brand-new strategy for what we in [MLS] hope to achieve in this city," Garber said. Garber and Nguyen were saying the same thing: Los Angeles had untapped potential. Historically, the Galaxy might have been the league's most successful franchise -- they've won a league-best five MLS Cups and have featured some of the world's most recognizable stars in David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic -- but armed with two decades' worth of lessons from trial-and-error across Major League Soccer, a blank slate in the country's most important soccer market really was a special opportunity. For starters, how would they approach the battle in LA? "Great adversaries on the field create great fan interest and great media interest," said Peter Guber, a media executive and the team's executive chairman. "It engages in more people in the sport, engages in more conversation and dialogue. You have to win the hearts and minds of your fans and create that dialogue. So, we have respect for it. "Every movie needs a hero and a villain. Every combination brings drama to it. We're in the drama business and that's part of the drama. Can we compete?" LAFC proved right away there was more than enough interest for a second team in the market. The fledgling franchise has sold out every MLS game it has played at its 22,000-seat home and even though the Galaxy's Ibrahimovic has the league's top-selling jersey, LAFC gear is becoming easy to find out and about around LA. In the "movie" that is the LAFC story, Zlatan has been the unquestioned villain. With eight goals in five head-to-head meetings, he's the main reason the Galaxy is unbeaten in the series (2-0-3). He came off the bench to score two memorable goals in a 4-3 win in the first-ever game between the teams last season and has five goals in two games this year. In the three-plus years leading up to the team's on-field debut in 2018, the club delivered on just about everything it set out to do. Beautiful (and accessible) soccer-specific stadium? Check. Passionate supporter culture? Check. Recognizable star? Vela was viewed as a unicorn in the league office. When Bradley became available after a brief stint as at Swansea City, where he'd become the first American to manage in the English Premier League, LAFC general manager John Thorrington made him his top target. Together, along with assistant general manager Will Kuntz and a staff featuring two full-time scouts in South America, they've built a team with a nice mix of promising international talent and MLS veterans. By any reasonable measure, Year 1 was an overwhelming success as they became just the fifth expansion side to reach the playoffs. "And we were still left bitterly disappointed at the end," said Thorrington. Conceding three goals against the run of play in a 3-2 loss can have that effect, but as discouraging as the first-round loss to Real Salt Lake might have been in 2018, there was no denying the club had laid the groundwork to build a potential juggernaut. There were some roster tweaks needed, but most of the heavy lifting was done. "I think for us, for the most part, the [offseason] language was 'continuity and depth,' said Thorrington. "Having lived through one season, we set this team up to be sustainably competitive. I think last year taught us lessons about where we fell short in our goal of being competitive in the short, medium and long term. And so a lot of it was just getting better: the proverbial freshmen becoming sophomores. So that's a lot of what you see. It's the same guys for the most part." With that as a backdrop, improvement was expected, and again, LAFC raised the bar. It set the single-season record for points (72) and goal differential (+48), and tied the single-season goals record (85). Vela broke the single-season records for both goals (34) and combined goals and assists (49), the latter of which he broke with 10 games remaining on the schedule. He's a sure bet to be named league MVP over Zlatan and Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez, who won the MVP in 2018 and set the record Vela quickly broke. 1:40 El Trafico is nearly here! LA Lakers and LA Clippers fans predict who will win: LAFC or LA Galaxy. On former LAFC teammate Benny Feilhaber's podcast, Vela explained how both he and the team raised their levels of play in Year 2. "Well, I think that first and more important thing is that we know each other now," said Vela. "When you go to a new school, you don't know the rest of the class. To be a good team, you have to spend time training a lot. Know how your teammates likes to play and after that, it's easier for you to know where you have to be, who has the ball, do I make a run or do I wait for another one. It's easy to play like that." There's plenty of credit to go around, but both Vela and left-back Jordan Harvey made a point to mention Ghanaian midfielder Latif Blessing as one of the key, unexpected developments. Last year, Blessing was a change-of-pace winger without much end product, and in the offseason there was some thought internally that maybe he could help the team as a right back. Instead, Blessing transformed into an indispensable part of central midfield alongside Colombian Eduard Atuesta and Canadian international Mark-Anthony Kaye. Blessing, who was on the books for just $110,416 in 2019, was so good early in the season that Designated Player Andre Horta -- set to make nearly $1.3 million this year -- became an unnecessary roster accessory and was sold back to his former club in Portugal. That move opened the door for the acquisition of Uruguayan international Brian Rodriguez, a winger from Peñarol, the same club in Uruguay that produced the team's second-leading scorer, Diego Rossi. "I think that's a credit to the [coaching] staff, recognizing these things, but then there's everything that went into building the roster," said Harvey. "They wanted to bring guys in here that have a level of soccer knowledge and IQ that they could take on these difficult nuances that Bob presents. And I think people are just more comfortable with that in Year 2." When he signed with LAFC as a free agent, Harvey, now in his 13th MLS season, had already been part of two expansion teams (Philadelphia in 2010, Vancouver in 2011). He knew Thorrington from their time together as teammates in Vancouver, and though he didn't know Bradley well, his reputation as one of the greatest American managers of all time was appealing. The same can be said for the LAFC-Galaxy series, which has already grown into arguably the best rivalry in the league. That drama Guber called for in 2014 has been delivered consistently even without the added pressure of competing in the postseason. "Someone said to me, 'How will you ever going compete as the second team in the marketplace?'" said Guber. "I said, 'Well, by becoming the first team instead." That chance has arrived. Former Farrow producer rips NBC: 'We were lied to over and over' | TheHill - The Hill Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:51 AM PDT Former Farrow producer rips NBC: 'We were lied to over and over' | TheHill - The Hill A former NBC News producer who worked with investigative journalist Ronan Farrow is alleging that he was repeatedly lied to about the network's handling of the Pulitzer Prize-winner's reporting of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein and former "Today" show host Matt Lauer "I have no animosity against these people, but it's clear to me that we were lied to over and over, and it's just not right," Rich McHugh told Fox News host Tucker Carlson ADVERTISEMENT "It's the very crux of what they do ... it's their mission is to tell the truth," McHugh added. "And I think they not only lost sight of it, but ... they didn't adhere to their basic principles." The allegation comes after McHugh wrote a scathing article in Vanity Fair pointing the finger specifically at NBC News and MSNBC Chairman Andrew Lack and NBC News President Noah Oppenheim, alleging that the two executives killed Farrow's reporting on the former Hollywood mogul. "[NBC News and MSNBC Chairman Andrew] Lack and Oppenheim were the ones who were lying," McHugh wrote. "They not only personally intervened to shut down our investigation of Weinstein, they even refused to allow me to follow up on our work after Weinstein's history of sexual assault became front-page news," he added. Oppenheim has vigorously pushed back against bombshell accusations made in Farrow's new book, saying the network has "no secrets and nothing to hide." "Matt Lauer's actions were abhorrent, and the anger and sadness he caused continue to this day. As we've said since the moment he was fired, his abuses should never have happened. Ronan Farrow's book takes that undeniable fact and twists it into a lie — alleging we were a 'company with a lot of secrets.' We have no secrets and nothing to hide," Oppenheim wrote in a lengthy memo sent to staff obtained by The Hill earlier this month. NBC News also pushed back on Farrow's claim of multiple settlements to Lauer accusers. "The first time we learned about Matt Lauer's sexual misconduct in the workplace was the night of November 27, 2017 and he was fired in 24 hours. Any suggestion that we knew prior to that evening, paid any 'hush money,' or tried to cover up any aspect of Lauer's appalling behavior is absolutely false," the network said in a statement. The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that NBC renewed Oppenheim's contract months before Farrow's book was published. Farrow won a Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for his reporting in the New Yorker on Weinstein that spurred the #MeToo movement. 2019-10-23 12:05:41Z https://thehill.com/homenews/media/467053-former-farrow-producer-rips-nbc-executives-oppenheim-we-were-lied-to-over-and |

Verizon is giving its customers 12 free months of Disney+ - TechCrunch Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:50 AM PDT Verizon is giving its customers 12 free months of Disney+ - TechCrunch ![]() On November 12 Verizon will begin offering 12 months of Disney+ to all of its new and existing 4gLTE and 5G unlimited wireless customers, the companies said today in a joint statement. It's a great way for Disney to juice its early subscriber numbers and for Verizon to add a tantalizing perk as competition heats up for both streaming media companies and telecoms whose media strategy still seems a little… muddled. While Comcast and AT&T each have their own successful media properties, Verizon (which owns Verizon Media Group, which owns TechCrunch) has seen its fortunes in the media landscape wane as much of the investment thesis behind buying Aol… then Yahoo… then merging them into Oath… then rebranding them as Verizon Media Group… fizzled. Tying itself to Disney+ — even just promotionally — makes good business sense. Through the agreement Verizon customers get access to everything Disney+ has to offer, including the highly anticipated Star Wars television series, "The Mandalorian" and another 25 original films and documentaries. Watch the over three hour-long teaser trailer below for an exhaustive look at every. single. Disney. piece. of. content. coming. to. the. service.
"Giving Verizon customers an unprecedented offer and access to Disney+ on the platform of their choice is yet another example of our commitment to provide the best premium content available through key partnerships on behalf of our customers," said Verizon Chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg, in a statement. "Our work with Disney extends beyond Disney+ as we bring the power of 5G Ultra Wideband technology to the entertainment industry through exciting initiatives with Disney Innovation Studios and in the parks," he added. Here's the deal: At launch, Verizon becomes the exclusive wireless carrier to offer 12 months of Disney+ for itsnew and existing customers. The offer also extends to its new Fios Home Internet and 5G Home Internet customers. Folks can activate their Disney+ subscription and start streaming on devices including game consoles, streaming media players and smart televisions. 2019-10-23 00:22:14Z https://techcrunch.com/2019/10/22/verizon-is-giving-its-customers-12-free-months-of-disney/ |

2019-10-23 05:46:00Z https://natalie.mu/comic/news/352534 |
