Focus on behaviors rather than goals - Red Bluff Daily News Posted: 11 Nov 2019 09:22 PM PST ![]() Goal setting is a typical strategy for change. People imagine an outcome that they want and use the goal like a beacon- drawing them while they navigate the sea toward the goal-shaped shore. The thing is, using sports as an analogy; both the winner and the loser of a sporting match have the same goal. In most cases, both teams are equally prepared to reach their goal but only one team is a victor at a time. Rather than focus on goals, it's better to focus on behaviors. A goal is a by-product of a series of behaviors that compound over time ending in a new and better outcome than was possible before. The small and consistent changes or actions are far more valuable and important than the goal itself. You may have a goal to lose weight. That's awesome, but if you don't take small, consistent action there's very little likelihood you'll reach your goal. Having the goal isn't nearly as important as what you are willing to do to achieve it. It doesn't take any bravery, skill, or remarkable ability to set a goal. It does take all of that and more to walk out the path to the goal. Perhaps you have a goal to get a degree. That is the easiest step of the journey. What matters more than the certificate of completion is the effort and skills developed to meet the requirements. Developing study habits, internalizing data, balancing work and home life will become an integral part of what having the degree means. In the end, you'll have so much more than specialized knowledge in a specific area. You'll have a wide range of skill sets that make you more efficient in all areas of life. The behaviors end up having more value than the goal. In the same way that focusing on the goal won't make it happen, failure to pay attention to the behaviors you need to develop results in quitting when things get hard. If you only focus on the goal, you'll likely be unwilling or unable to do the small things that seem unrelated because they look like a distraction. Taking care of your body, eating right, getting enough rest, doesn't look like part of the end result but they are related. I'd like to encourage you to stop having goals and start focusing on behaviors. You likely have a general idea of what you'd like to see manifest in your life. Start thinking about what the next step is to get there. It's most likely something small. Start something. Stop something. One small thing that leans in towards your goal. Hint – waiting on someone else is never part of the equation. You can do this. You're the only one who can. Oshie OT Goal Wiped Out, Caps Lose to Coyotes in Shootout - The New York Times Posted: 11 Nov 2019 09:22 PM PST ![]() WASHINGTON — Even as T.J. Oshie skated to the bench and figured his overtime goal would be waved off, opposing goaltender Antti Raanta waited for official word. He'd been burned too many times before. A couple of Raanta's Arizona Coyotes teammates left the bench and turned toward their locker room before others screamed the play might've been offside. They returned, as the Capitals remained on the ice and waited until video review wiped out a would-be goal by Oshie that would've extended Washington's winning streak to seven. Instead, the Coyotes picked themselves up from their lowest moment and beat the NHL-leading Capitals 4-3 in a shootout Monday night. "You're thinking as a coach, 'We got a point, but we blew a three-goal lead,'" Arizona's Rick Tocchet said. "You come back from the dead." After blowing a 3-0 lead to let the game slip into overtime, where it looked like Oshie beat them, the Coyotes got shootout goals from Nick Schmaltz and Conor Garland and two more big stops from Raanta to snap their three-game skid. Raanta made 31 saves in regulation and overtime, and was able to keep the puck out against Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov in the shootout to cap a stellar night. Raanta "tried to kind of stay in the moment and just hope that it would be offside" when Oshie's goal 2:16 into overtime was being reviewed. Coyotes players refocused after referee Frederick L'Ecuyer announced no goal and didn't let the roller coaster of emotions derail them. "It's tough when you kind of feel so dejected and then, oh, you've got three more minutes to play," defenseman Jason Demers said. "I think guys did a great job of staying locked in." Washington, which lost for just the second time in 12 games, was on the wrong side of two video reviews. A puck off the skate of Arizona's Christian Fischer 10 seconds into the second period was found to be completely over the goal line while inside Ilya Samsonov's glove, and then Oshie was clearly offside in OT. Coach Todd Reirden couldn't argue either one. "T.J. is pretty on top of things, so he had a strong feeling it was going to be offside," Reirden said. "We still gave ourselves a chance and get to a shootout and continue to grow and get better." Despite two goals from Kuznetsov, Oshie's tying goal — the one that counted — with 1:16 left in regulation and 32 saves from Samsonov, it was a growing moment for the Coyotes. After goals from Clayton Keller, Fischer and Michael Grabner, they blew a 3-0 lead for a second consecutive game and have endured plenty of tough-luck blows early on this season. Getting the benefit of video review in OT was a break the Coyotes felt was a long time coming. "That would have been a tough pill to swallow," Fischer said. "The past three or four games we just can't close it out for whatever reason. ... We got a little luck there." More so than luck, technology was on Arizona's side and Raanta was on his game. Long before OT, the veteran Finn went spread-eagle to deny Jakub Vrana 63 seconds in, made a Grade-A save on Tom Wilson a minute later and slid over to stop Alex Ovechkin from his patented spot on the power play in the third. "I was trying to read the plays," Raanta said. "It was a little bit of luck maybe, but when you're reading the plays, when you're kind of seeing how things are going, you get those pushes and you get those backdoor plays. I think it was just nice to get those saves and help the team to win." NOTES: Washington winger Richard Panik returned after missing 10 games with a right shoulder injury. To make room for Panik, the Capitals sent forward Travis Boyd and defenseman Tyler Lewington to Hershey of the American Hockey League. ... Arizona defenseman Jason Demers returned from a two-game absence with a lower-body injury. ... The Capitals have scored in the second period of every game this season. UP NEXT Coyotes: Visit the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Capitals: At the streaking Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. ___ ___ "Goal" - Google News November 11, 2019 at 08:21PM https://ift.tt/32EPfrl Oshie OT Goal Wiped Out, Caps Lose to Coyotes in Shootout - The New York Times "Goal" - Google News https://ift.tt/35TEe8t Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update
Hong Kong riot police fire tear gas at university campus amid unrest - The Straits Times Posted: 11 Nov 2019 08:40 PM PST HONG KONG (REUTERS, BLOOMBERG) - Hong Kong riot police fired tear gas at City University campus in Kowloon Tong on Tuesday (Nov 12), a day after a protester was shot and a man set on fire in some of the most dramatic unrest to rock the Chinese-ruled city in more than five months. Residents of the Asian financial centre struggled to get to work as territory-wide transport disruptions wreaked commuter havoc and activists planned flash protests. There were chaotic scenes as people thronged metro stations, only to stream out shortly after, clogging footpaths as they queued for buses or alternative transport after some train services were disrupted or suspended. Some roads were closed early in the morning with long traffic jams building during rush hour, a day after some of the worst violence to rock the former British colony. Riot police were deployed at metro stations across the territory, while rail operator MTR Corp urged people to use other forms of transport. "It is very inconvenient for me because I have a few meetings to go to in Central," said a 38-year-old man who gave his name as Rodney and who works as a legal consultant for an international firm. "Hopefully my partners will understand that my city is going through a tough period," he said, adding that he blames Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam for the protests Protesters urged people to gather in the Central business district on Hong Kong Island and the bustling Kowloon tourism and shopping area of Tsim Sha Tsui at noon. Universities and schools cancelled classes, with students, teachers and parents on edge a day after police fired tear gas and students hurled petrol bombs on some campuses. ![]() More than 260 people were arrested on Monday, police said, bringing the total number to more than 3,000 since the protests escalated in June. In a regular briefing on Tuesday morning, Lam said protesters who are trying to "paralyse" the city were extremely selfish and hoped all universities and schools would urge students not to participate in violence. She also praised residents who volunteered to clear roadblocks set up by protesters. She said she respected everyone who went to work despite the difficult conditions. On Monday, Mrs Lam said that the violence roiling the former British colony exceeded protesters' demands for democracy and demonstrators are now the people's enemy. "Violence is not going to give us any solution to the problems that Hong Kong is facing. Our joint priority now as a city is to end the violence and to return Hong Kong to normal as soon as possible," she said. One man was shot by a police officer on Monday during the morning clashes, while another was set on fire by protesters. The man who was set by fire has been identified by the Hong Kong media as Leung Chi-cheung, 57, a construction worker and father of two girls. Reports say he was on the way to a medical examination when he went after protesters who vandalised Ma On Shan MTR station on Monday afternoon. He was subsequently attacked and set on fire. Leung is currently hospitalised and "fighting for his life" with second-degree burns on his chest and arms, media reports said. Police have classified the case as attempted murder. The United States has expressed "grave concern" over the increasingly violent situation in Hong Kong and called for restraint by both security forces and protesters. "The United States is watching the situation in Hong Kong with grave concern," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement. "We condemn violence on all sides, extend our sympathies to victims of violence regardless of their political inclinations, and call for all parties – police and protesters – to exercise restraint," Ortagus said. In a separate statement, Ortagus urged Beijing to honour commitments that "Hong Kong will 'enjoy a high degree of autonomy' and that the people of Hong Kong will enjoy human rights the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly". The flare-up in violence occurred after Hong Kong last week saw its first fatality linked to the protests that began in June against a bill that would've allowed extraditions to mainland China. While the proposal has since been withdrawn, demonstrators have widened their demands to include an independent inquiry into police violence and the ability to nominate and elect their own leaders – both of which Beijing has rejected. An editorial in the state-backed China Daily newspaper condemned the violence on Monday and took aim at the "leniency of Hong Kong judges". "Allowing (protesters) to apply for bail on easy terms and handing down extraordinarily light sentences has also served to encourage inhuman terrorist acts," it said. Jimmy G seemingly imitates Prescott's viral warmup video - NBCSports.com Posted: 11 Nov 2019 08:11 PM PST ![]() 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is the greatest quarterback to go viral on the internet since Dak Prescott. The Cowboys signal-caller caused the internet to have a field day with his pregame warmup routine prior to "Sunday Night Football," when the Dallas Cowboys hosted the Minnesota Vikings. This was the original:
The wonderful people of social media then added background music ranging in everything from "Africa" by Toto to Kenny Loggins' "Footloose." Some Lil Jon made an appearance in there as well. Each one of them were great. But NBC Sports Bay Area's own Jennifer Lee Chan has one that's even better, courtesy of the 49ers QB on Monday night:
Yeah, we know. Great, right? [RELATED: Jimmy G can make big statement vs. Seahawks] Whatever preps him for the "Monday Night Football" game vs. the Seattle Seahawks is fine with 49ers fans everywhere if he keeps playing the way he has. Only Jimmy G can take a viral tweet and make it go even more viral. Related content from TMZ SportsStephen Jackson: We need to protect LaMelo Ball from LaVar The Seattle Seahawks appeared primed to take a halftime lead over the 49ers on Monday night at Levi's Stadium. Until they weren't. 49ers safety Jaquiski Tartt stripped D.K. Metcalf of the football at San Francisco 2-yard line as the Seahawks rookie wide receiver was bound for the end zone with just over a minute remaining in the first half.
Officials initially did not rule a change in possession, but a replay overturned the call on the field. Tartt stepped out of bounds as he tried to strip Metcalf, but he stepped back inbounds to re-establish himself.
[RELATED: Jimmy G seemingly imitates Prescott's viral warmup video] Mike Pereira, a FOX Sports analyst and the NFL's former head of officiating, tweeted that it was the "right decision."
The 49ers ran out the first-half clock after Tartt's forced fumble, nursing a 10-7 lead headed into halftime as they tried to preserve their undefeated record against their NFC West rivals. The 49ers will be without Jimmy Garoppolo's favorite target for the rest of Mpnday night's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who had seamlessly fit in Kyle Shanahan's offense since coming over from the Broncos in an Oct. 22 trade, has been ruled out for the rest of the game with a rib injury.
Sanders racked up two catches for 24 yards before leaving the contest. He was coming off the most productive game by a 49ers wideout in years, racking up seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' win over the Arizona Cardinals last Thursday night. [RELATED: Watch Tartt strip ball from Seahawks, preserve 49ers' lead] 49ers defensive lineman D.J. Jones, who has been playing great as of late, also was ruled out for the game with a groin injury. The U.S. Is Exporting Viral Anti-Vaxxer Content to Brazil - VICE Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:36 PM PST ![]() A U.S. anti-vaccination website that was removed from Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube earlier this year has found a new home for its content: Brazil. U.S. website Natural News accounted for almost one-third of all the misinformation found on social media and other websites targeting people in Brazil, according to a new study from the Brazilian Society of Immunizations and Avaaz, a non-profit human rights activist network. "Of the anti-vaccination misinformation we investigated, which had been debunked by the most relevant fact-checking agencies in Brazil, much of the content was originally produced in the U.S. and has been reposted by Brazilian accounts," says the report, entitled "Is Fake News Making Us Sick?". Natural News is one of the best-known anti-vaccination websites in the U.S., but in June it suffered a significant blow when Facebook removed its account, which had amassed 3 million followers. YouTube and Twitter also removed accounts linked to the website, and Google down-ranked it in search listings back in 2017. But the Avaaz report shows that Natural News and other conspiracy sites continue to spread their anti-vaccination message about the dangers of vaccinations via articles that are translated into Portuguese and shared widely on social media in Brazil, as well as on encrypted-messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Looking at a representative sample of just 30 posts, the researchers at Avaaz found that anti-vaxx disinformation in Brazil had a massive reach. Those 30 online articles and videos were shared on multiple platforms — YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and reposted on other websites — reaching at least 2.4 million views on YouTube. On Facebook, the videos were viewed 23.5 million times and shared 578,000 times. READ: 2020 voters are already being inundated by fake news on Facebook Along with articles originating on Natural News, the researchers also found content from a number of other U.S.-based sites, including GreenMedInfo, VacTruth, Conspiracy Club, and Stop Mandatory Vaccination. Most of the articles have been translated word-for-word from English into Portuguese without mistakes, suggesting this was not an automated process. The researchers also surveyed Brazilians about their attitudes to vaccinations, and found that 13 percent of those interviewed failed to vaccinate themselves or a child under their care. When asked why they didn't vaccinate, 57 percent gave a reason that is factually inaccurate, like the belief that vaccines increase the chances of having serious side effects, or that vaccines are not necessary. The World Health Organization has labeled both those claims as misinformation. READ: About 3 billion social media users are being spied on by their governments Almost 50 percent of people said their main source of information about vaccinations was social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp. The Brazilian market is particularly ripe for exploitation by those spreading misinformation: An Ipsos poll last year found that Brazilians were the most likely to be duped by fake news. The Avaaz report backed up this assertion, finding that 67 percent of Brazilians were willing to believe at least one inaccurate statement about vaccinations. "Brazil is experiencing an epidemic of misinformation about vaccines," Nana Queiroz, Avaaz's campaigner in Brazil, said in the report. "This is not a political problem, it's a personal one and it's risking lives. Big platforms need to recognize anti-vaccination content is viral and contagious — spreading from country to country. That's why they must immediately begin showing corrections to people exposed to vaccination misinformation and help officials to spread reliable content across the globe." Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam calls protesters selfish for 'paralyzing' the city - CNBC Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:25 PM PST ![]() Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam leaves her annual policy address due to disruptions by pro-democracy lawmakers in the Legislative Council on October 16, 2019. Anthony Wallace | AFP | Getty Images Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said Tuesday that the protesters "paralyzing" the city are selfish. Lam added that the city's government is still doing its best to hold a fair, safe, and orderly district council election, scheduled for later this month. She made her comments during a regular media address a day after Hong Kong saw the most violent day since the protests started nearly six months ago. On Monday morning local time, a police officer shot a protester who is now in critical condition. A hospital press officer confirmed to CNBC that the 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound. The police spokesperson said the officer involved in the shooting fired three times. That incident occurred at around 7 a.m. outside the Sai Wan Ho Mass Transit Railway station. In a separate incident, police said "rioters" poured "flammable liquid" on a man and set him on fire. Speaking at an afternoon press conference, Hong Kong police said the incident occurred at the Ma On Shan MTR station and that the man is in critical condition at a hospital. Police said they are investigating the fire attack and made no mention of arrests. Disturbing and graphic videos of those two incidents and other violence circulated widely on social media Monday. Hong Kong — a former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997 — has been crippled by widespread demonstrations since early June. It operates as a semi-autonomous territory under the "one country, two systems" principle — a structure that grants Hong Kong citizens some degree of financial and legal independence from the mainland. What started out as protests against an extradition bill has morphed into broader anti-government demonstrations, including a wider range of demands such as greater democracy and universal suffrage. A majority of the protesters have been young students from university and high schools. Lam said on Tuesday that she hopes universities and schools urge students to not participate in any illegal activities. Most universities in Hong Kong have reportedly suspended classes on Tuesday. On Monday, Reuters reported that Lam said the violence roiling the former British colony exceeded protesters' demands for democracy and demonstrators are now the people's enemy. — CNBC's Ted Kemp and Vivian Kam contributed to this report. AT&T rips T-Mobile's promise to first responders as 'a marketing stunt' - FierceWireless Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:17 PM PST Last week, T-Mobile made some announcements that were either a) nice things to do for low-income families and emergency responders, or b) self-serving maneuvers to convince the attorneys general of several states to drop their lawsuit against the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint. T-Mobile promised that if its merger with Sprint closes, the New T-Mobile would introduce low-cost prepaid wireless plans, provide free broadband access to underserved households with school-age children and provide free 5G service for first responders. AT&T is calling T-Mobile's promise regarding first responders a marketing ploy. In an email to FierceWireless, an AT&T spokesperson said, "We have a deep and genuine commitment to connecting first responders and using technology to enrich education, not marketing stunts contingent on getting something approved. If they believe it's critical to offer free access to these communities they would do it today, no conditions or questions asked." RELATED: T-Mobile ponies up 5G commitments for low income families, first responders But analyst Andrew Seybold, who writes regularly for All Things FirstNet, points out that T-Mobile would not have access to Band 14 spectrum, which is licensed to AT&T for FirstNet, and neither would T-Mobile have access to the hardened and secured core network of FirstNet. FirstNet came about after the events of 911 and Hurricane Katrina when first responders and the general public realized that the country needed some kind of coordinated communications system for emergencies. FirstNet, which is operated by the First Responder Network Authority, allowed parties to bid on building out the dedicated first-responder's network. But AT&T was the only major carrier that bid on the project. It has turned out to be a boon for AT&T, which is leveraging tower climbers to install FirstNet equipment and to also install 5G equipment at the same time. FirstNet was one of the few things Elliott Management congratulated the company about in its scathing letter to AT&T's Board of Directors. RELATED: Elliott trashes AT&T management and its execution in wireless Seybold said, "Today there is one official FirstNet network. It has its own network core, own secure dedicated lines, and everybody who operates on it as a first responder has a black SIM that puts them on the network with priority." The other carriers may not have wanted to work with the federal government when they decided not to bid for the FirstNet project. But now that it's become a winner for AT&T, they may regret their earlier decision and want to find a way to participate. AT&T makes money in two ways from FirstNet. It is allowed to charge first responders a monthly fee to access the network. Secondly, when the Band 14 spectrum is not being fully used for public safety, AT&T has the right to use the spectrum for its commercial customers, said Seybold. "This is vitally important in cities with congestion," he said. In the 25-year contract with the First Responder Network Authority, AT&T has to give back some money from the profits it makes using Band 14 for its commercial customers. Verizon has already tried to get in on some of the first-responder action by offering priority and preemption for first responders on its regular commercial network. T-Mobile is promising to do something similar. "Interestingly, T-Mobile is not offering free laptop or connected device data as part of this offer," writes Roger Entner in an Industry Voices column for FierceWireless. "For any first responder agency this would mean either to pay T-Mobile for all the data coming from laptops in police cars and medical equipment in ambulances or have a multi-carrier option with AT&T's FirstNet or Verizon." So far, the information on T-Mobile's site is pretty sparse in terms of details about its Connecting Heroes service. "I, for one, don't take this offer as being either real or tangible," said Seybold. Under T-Mobile CEO John Legere, the company has certainly gained a reputation as a master marketer. But whether the New T-Mobile will be able to live up to its promises, particularly regarding first responders, is yet to be seen. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Legere is in talks with SoftBank to become the CEO of WeWork. Blocking streets and subway stations has been a common tactic of the anti-government protesters, but recent weeks have been marked by clashes with police, escalating vandalism against government and commercial property, and assaults by both protesters and pro-Beijing supporters. On Monday, a police officer drew his gun during a struggle with protesters, shooting one in the abdomen. In another neighborhood, a person was set on fire after an apparent argument. The Hong Kong hospital authority said both were in critical condition. Video of another incident showed a policeman on a motorcycle riding through a group of protesters in an apparent attempt to disperse them. Police say those events are being investigated but defend the officers' actions as necessary for their own safety. Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam pledged to "spare no effort" to halt the protests in comments likely to fuel speculation that harsher legal and police measures were planned. "I do not want to go into details, but I just want to make it very clear that we will spare no effort in finding ways and means that could end the violence in Hong Kong as soon as possible," Lam told reporters Monday. Lam also again refused to accept the protesters' demands for political concessions. "These rioters' actions have far exceeded their demands, and they are enemies of the people," she said. One of their demands is for the government to stop labeling the demonstrators as rioters, which connotes that even peaceful protest is a criminal activity. Their other unmet demands are for democratic changes in Hong Kong's government, criminal charges to be dropped against protesters and for police actions against the protesters to be independently investigated. Following Lam's comments, confrontations between protesters and police continued into the night, with black-clad demonstrators torching at least one vehicle and blocking an intersection in the Mongkok district that has been the scene of many clashes. A taxi driver was taken away by ambulance with head wounds, although it wasn't immediately clear how he had been injured. In Washington, the U.S. government said it is watching the situation with "grave concern." "?We condemn violence on all sides, extend our sympathies to victims of violence regardless of their political inclinations, and call for all parties — police and protestors — to exercise restraint," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement. She urged the government to address the underlying concerns behind the protests and the protesters to respond to efforts at dialogue. In a widely distributed video of the police-involved shooting Monday morning, an officer shoos away a group of protesters out of an intersection, then drew his gun on a protester who approached him. As the two struggle, another protester in black approaches. The offer fires at the second protester, who falls to the ground. The officer appeared to fire again, but police said only one protester was hit. It was the second police shooting of a protester since the demonstrations began, although police have repeatedly drawn firearms to ward off attacks. Police said they arrested more than 260 people on Monday, raising to 3,560 the number of arrests since the movement erupted in June. Few details were available about the burning incident in the Ma On Shan neighborhood. Video posted online shows the victim arguing with a group of young people before someone douses him with a liquid and strikes a lighter. Police fired tear gas and deployed a water cannon in parts of the city and charged onto the campus of Chinese University, where students were protesting. Online video also showed a policeman on a motorcycle riding through a group of protesters in an apparent attempt to disperse them. The protests initially began over a proposed law that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China, where they could face opaque and politically sensitive trials. Activists saw the bill as another sign of an erosion in Hong Kong's autonomy and civic freedoms, which China promised would be maintained for 50 years under a "one nation, two systems" principle when the former British colony returned to Chinese control in 1997. Lam eventually withdrew the extradition bill but has insisted the violence stop before an further political dialogue can take place. District council elections on Nov. 24 are seen as a measure of public sentiment toward Hong Kong's government. Pro-democracy lawmakers have accused the government of trying to provoke violence to justify canceling or postponing the vote. Australian state declares emergency due to wildfires - New Zimbabwe.com Posted: 11 Nov 2019 06:55 PM PST 11th November 2019 World AP Australia's most populous state declared a state of emergency on Monday due to unprecedented wildfire danger as calls grew for Australia to take more action to counter climate change. New South Wales state Emergency Services Minister David Elliott said residents were facing what "could be the most dangerous bushfire week this nation has ever seen." Fires in the state's northeast have claimed three lives, destroyed more than 150 homes and razed more than 970,000 hectares (3,700 square miles) of forest and farmland since Friday. Doctors and paramedics have treated more than 100 people for fire-related injuries, including 20 firefighters, Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan said. North of New South Wales, wildfires destroyed nine homes on Monday in Queensland state, where air quality plummeted in Brisbane, the state capital, and surrounding cities. Fire conditions are forecast to be worse on Tuesday than they were at the peak of the current fire emergency on Friday. Posted: 11 Nov 2019 06:36 PM PST Riders Alliance / Sofia Newman via Twitter A woman filmed being handcuffed and led away by four cops for selling churros in a New York City subway station on Friday broke down in tears Monday as she recalled New York City Police Department officers taking away her churro cart. The churro vendor, identified only as Elsa, spoke out Monday about the incident that was captured by a bystander in the now-viral video, sparking widespread anger. During a demonstration Monday to protest against the overpolicing of the subway system, Elsa said she had been selling churros for three years at the Broadway Junction station in Brooklyn. Courtesy Riders Alliance Speaking in Spanish, Elsa said that she was "very nervous" during the encounter, which she characterized as aggressive. She said that the officers ignored her pleas not to take away her churro cart with all her merchandise on it. "They took everything from me," Elsa said as she broke down crying. The NYPD said that the woman was not arrested but that she received a summons for being an unlicensed vendor. Police said she had been issued 10 summonses in the past five months for selling food without a license at the same station. The NYPD said the vendor was "briefly handcuffed" and released within minutes after her churro cart had been "vouchered as arrest evidence." Elsa said that the officers took her to a place with no cameras and laughed at her. She said that while officers had issued her tickets before, the interactions had never been this aggressive and the police had never confiscated all her merchandise. Sofia Newman, an actor in New York, recorded the incident on Friday night as four NYPD officers confronted Elsa and surrounded her churro cart. Newman's video of the encounter has been viewed more than 2.6 million times.
When Newman asked the officers why they were apprehending the woman, who was crying, the officer said that it was illegal to sell food inside the subway stations. He said that they had warned the woman "multiple times" but that "she doesn't want to give it up." When Newman asked if the woman could just go outside and keep her cart, the officer said no. Newman said that when Elsa tried to speak to them in Spanish, one of the cops "kept rolling his eyes" and said, "I know you can speak English."
In a statement, the NYPD said that the woman was instructed in English and Spanish that she would be issued a summons and her property would be taken away as evidence. "She refused to cooperate and was briefly handcuffed; officers escorted her into the command where she was uncuffed," the NYPD statement said. "Her property was vouchered as arrest evidence and she was released within minutes." Newman told BuzzFeed News that she had filed a public records request to obtain an incident report from police. She said that she was involved in efforts to help Elsa get her cart back and also planned to start a GoFundMe campaign to help her pay any fines and recover lost wages. Sofia Newman / Twitter Police said that they had "received numerous complaints regarding unlicensed vendors at Broadway Junction due to health concerns and individuals interfering with pedestrian flow." A BuzzFeed News analysis of 311 complaints from 2019 showed that there were three complaints related to unlicensed vending within a block of the Broadway Junction subway station all made between May 1 and 3 of this year (not all complaints related to unlicensed vendors include information about the location of where the complaint was launched). The video prompted many city and state officials to criticize the harassment and criminalization of subway vendors and to question the increased police presence in the city's subway system.
"Why is a woman selling churros getting cuffed?" Stephen Levin, a New York City Council member, tweeted.
"The subway overpolicing we've been watching in recent days shows how cruel & corrosive criminalizing poverty is," tweeted Brad Lander, another city council member.
"The level of enforcement used against this vendor was totally unnecessary and over the top," said Rafael Espinal Jr., a city council member who represents the district where the incident took place.
Scott Stringer, the city's comptroller, said the incident "raises serious questions about the increased police presence in our subways."
Elsa's viral encounter with police is the latest incident that has sparked criticism of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to add 500 additional police officers to the public transit system in an effort to curb fare evasion. Responding to the video, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday, "The facts are she was there multiple times and was told multiple times that's not a place you can be and it's against the law and it's creating congestion and she shouldn't have been there." He said that he had watched the video and that the officers had "comported themselves properly."
"I want us to get to a day where that kind of action is not necessary," de Blasio said. Earlier this month, widely shared videos of two other incidents capturing violent police confrontations with teens on the subway prompted hundreds of people to protest NYPD tactics in Brooklyn.

Smoky start to 'catastrophic' day as conditions deteriorate 'very rapidly' - The Age Posted: 11 Nov 2019 05:50 PM PST Three emergency warnings have been issued for out-of-control bushfires in northern NSW as weather conditions began to deteriorate on Tuesday. Just after midday, the Rural Fire Service issued emergency warnings for bushfires at Hillville near Nabiac, Torrington near Tenterfield, and at Thunderbolts Way in Bretti, west of Taree. "You're talking several hundreds of homes at a time [under threat] in some of these villages," RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said of homes in the path of bushfires. "[Included in these ares are] concentrations of populations as well as more isolated types of developments." Advertisement Meanwhile, residents in the Nowendoc and Mt George area have been told it is "too late to leave" and to "seek shelter as the fire approaches". After a cool and calm morning, the temperature in the CBD hit 33.4 degrees at 12pm, with Penrith reaching 34.5 degrees. Wind gusts up to 56km/h have been recorded in Penrith. An eerie layer of smog covers Kempsey at dawn as much of eastern NSW faces extreme or catastrophic fire conditions.Credit:Nick Moir The RFS is closely monitoring a blaze at Gospers Mountain, north-west of Sydney, that could move east and affect communities at St Albans and Wiseman's Ferry. Residents in Greater Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra are bracing for a "catastrophic" day of fire danger with severe weather conditions threatening to cause bushfire havoc the entire length of the NSW coastline. Sydneysiders are enduring "hazardous" air quality due to smoke haze drifting down from bushfires on the Mid North Coast, where 13 bushfires are at "watch and act" warning level. The mercury is tipped to reach 37 degrees in Sydney with wind gusts up to 80km/h in the west as conditions deteriorate "very rapidly", according to Rural Fire Service Inspector Ben Shepherd. More than 600 schools are closed across NSW, the military is on standby and firefighters across the state are bracing for the worst conditions they have ever seen. Catastrophic fire danger is forecast for Greater Sydney, the Hunter and the Illawarra, where more than six million people live, while a state-wide total fire ban is in place. More than 3000 firefighters are on the ground across the state, supported by 60 aircraft. At 9am there were 52 fires burning with 30 of those uncontained. RFS Commissioner Fitzsimmons painted a bleak picture of the bushfire outlook. "We can expect pretty significant fires to develop. We have already got significant fires burning in the north coast of NSW. A number of those fires are exceeding 100,000 hectares alone. You're talking about a 1000-kilometre fire perimeter," Mr Fitzsimmons said. "Fires that start and take hold will grow and develop extremely quickly. They will burn very aggressively." The weather bureau is forecasting a powerful southerly change to hit about 7pm, which will bring relief through cooler temperatures but also poses a risk because any fires burning near the coast would change direction. More than 100,000 homes in the Sydney basin alone are at risk of destruction based on previous bushfire activity because they lie within 100 metres of bushland. Blue Mountains City Council mayor Mark Greenhill told ABC radio on Monday morning that the mountains felt "kind of eerie". He said he remembered all-too-well the 2013 bushfires in his community which wiped out 200 homes in a single afternoon. "Basically we're waiting and we're prepared. The community has been here before," he said. "The weather conditions now are worse than they were in 2013. We're expecting high temperatures and high winds, on top of the long dry." NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian was briefed at the Rural Fire Service headquarters on Tuesday morning, where she thanked the community for heeding the warning messages. "Every precaution needs to take place today," she said. Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliot said the declared State of Emergency meant "everything that we can do has been done as a government and as agencies". He said it was now up to the community to mitigate risk for their own safety and advised people to use the Fires Near Me app or check online to track fires moving rapidly. Australia on alert as 'catastrophic' fire threat looms - CNN Posted: 11 Nov 2019 05:50 PM PST A "catastrophic" fire risk rating has been issued for Sydney on Tuesday, Australia's largest city -- the highest possible ranking for the country's emergency services. On the official NSW Rural Fire Services website, residents in "catastrophic" fire conditions are told to make a decision about "when you will leave." "Homes are not designed to withstand fires in catastrophic conditions so you should leave early," the website said. ![]() Up until a decade ago, the "catastrophic" fire risk level didn't even exist because the conditions were so rare. It was only after the devastating 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in the state of Victoria, in which 173 people were killed, that the category was introduced. Macquarie University's Mel Taylor, a researcher at the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Center, said a "catastrophic" risk indicated "the worst" possible conditions. "The catastrophic fire danger rating is based on a lot of different measures – temperature, humidity, fuel, wind – being off the scale so that if a fire starts in these conditions, it will travel very quickly and firefighters will not be able to control it," she said. "The only thing they will be able to do is to get people out." ![]() Top stories - Google News November 11, 2019 at 04:18PM https://ift.tt/2X1Ft1g Australia on alert as 'catastrophic' fire threat looms - CNN Top stories - Google News https://ift.tt/2FLTecc Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update
Asia stocks trade cautiously amid US-China trade jitters and unrest in Hong Kong - CNBC Posted: 11 Nov 2019 05:40 PM PST ![]() Stocks in Asia traded cautiously Tuesday morning amid concerns over the state of U.S.-China trade negotiations as well as a recent escalation of violence in ongoing protests in Hong Kong. Japan's Nikkei 225 was slightly higher in early trade while the Topix index declined more than 0.1%. Automaker Nissan Motor's shares slipped around 0.1% ahead of the expected release of its quarterly earnings report on Tuesday. The Kospi in South Korea added 0.32% while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 traded 0.45% lower. Overall, the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index traded fractionally lower. Investors are looking for developments on U.S.-China trade, amid uncertainty over what has been agreed to between the two economic powerhouses. U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he had not agreed to roll back tariffs on China. That conflicted with comments from the Chinese commerce ministry, which said both sides had agreed to cancel existing levies in phases. A U.S. official also said both sides agreed to roll back the tariffs in tranches. Meanwhile, market movements in Hong Kong will also be monitored, after the Hang Seng index plunged more than 2.5% on Monday following an escalation in violence amid unrest in the embattled city. A protester was left in critical condition after being shot by police Monday morning local time. Separately, another man was also in critical condition after he was doused with what police described as "flammable liquid" and set on fire. Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out a record close, adding 10.25 points to 27,691.49. The S&P 500 ended its three-day winning streak, declining 0.2% to 3,087.01. The Nasdaq Composite shed 0.1% to close at 8,464.28. The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was last at 98.2 after seeing levels above 98.3 yesterday. The Japanese yen, widely viewed as a safe-haven currency in times of market uncertainty and turmoil, traded at 109.02 after strengthening from levels around 109.2 yesterday. The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.6848 after slipping from levels around $0.686 in the previous session. What's on tap:

Not even two months after a failed IPO and the ouster of its cofounder CEO, Adam Neumann, WeWork's parent, the We Company, is looking for a new leader. And one of those candidates, according to the Wall Street Journal's Sarah Krouse and Maureen Farrell, is T-Mobile US head John Legere. It'd be a move from one outspoken, long-haired chief executive to another, but the similarities pretty much end there. Whereas Neumann was able to use his vision and eccentric charisma (at least in some eyes) to build a global startup and raise billions from private investors, he was unable to translate that into a style that reassured public investors. Legere, on the other hand, was able to take T-Mobile from its position firmly in fourth place among America's top telecommunications companies and make it the country's fastest growing, since taking over in 2012. He took the company public and invested heavily in its network and revamped its corporate culture, transforming a company known for its bad cell service and customer service alike, into one that not only overtook Sprint but is set to merge with it next year. For the We Company, Legere's skillset may represent a path to brand recuperation and profitability. But ahead of the Sprint merger he not only orchestrated but has fought for for the past two years, it would seem unlikely that Legere would leave for another major challenge in an industry he has no experience in. Neither the We Company nor T-Mobile has responded to the report, but we've gathered some insight into why Legere would even have made it onto We's shortlist. Transforming a company and himselfWhen Legere's headhunter told him in 2011 that there was an interview opportunity to be the CEO of T-Mobile, Legere said he found the idea "laughable and really not something he'd do," Legere told us in 2016. The company seemed hopeless. But he was in a strange time in his life, he said — he had just sold Global Crossing, the telecom company he'd led for 10 years, and gotten divorced in the same month — and the recruiter was his friend, so he decided to give it a shot. He met with René Obermann, the head of T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telekom. He told Obermann there was only one way the company could fail in the United States: "Do exactly what you're doing — nothing." The only way T-Mobile could work, Legere explained, was by overhauling every aspect of its business and distinguishing itself in all ways from market leaders Verizon and AT&T. Obermann liked Legere's attitude and offered him the job, which he took in 2012. In his early days, Legere wrote a manifesto, but it wasn't like the one Neumann wrote for WeWork, proclaiming that its core business of co-working space would "elevate the world's consciousness." Legere's manifesto declared the T-Mobile he was about to build as the "Un-carrier," the one that would highlight all of the reasons why customers would hate their wireless carrier, like hidden fees and unbearable customer service — and do the opposite. It can be hard to imagine now, but Legere used to have slick-back hair and a penchant for suits, Intl he decided that part of his brand turnaround would involve him as the personification of the new T-Mobile. He settled on long hair, a black jacket, and as much branded clothing in the company's magenta hue as possible. To accompany that, he decided to attack his three rivals relentlessly (which sometimes got a bit excessive) and develop a memeable online presence through social media, liberally using promoted posts for silly but attention-grabbing videos like his "Slow Cooker Sunday" cooking show. He had the company invest heavily in its network so that its service could be on par with the market leaders, eliminating its primary weakness, and he took the company public. To help reinvigorate his company's culture and improve customer service, he initiated a stock program for employees and started making all of his corporate presentations available to all employees. He told us that one of his main messages for all of these all-hands presentations was, "Listen, if some of this doesn't make sense to you, what should make sense is the reason I'm telling you — I respect you as an owner and as a partner." Legere also made a section in his calendar book that contains a color-coded list of how many times he's visited each of T-Mobile US's major call centers. As he said in our 2016 interview: "It's not that complicated. I go in, they meet me outside, we take selfies as I stand like a piece of furniture, I tell them about how things are going — but most importantly, I say thank you and help them see that their behavior and their work has driven the culture of the company that's changed the industry and the whole world. It's a bit of a love affair." Like Neumann, Legere built somewhat of a cult of personality around himself, but with Legere it was always part of his mission to bolster his company's core brand, rather than getting into Silicon Valley theatrics for their own sake. An unclear future but clear adviceLast year, Legere announced alongside his former Twitter foe and Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure that T-Mobile was going to take over Sprint, with T-Mobile fully absorbing its rival and accelerating T-Mobile's trajectory ahead of the shift to 5G networks that will likely launch in the early 2020s. Claure left to join Softbank — which now controls WeWork — but Legere buckled down for a long fight with regulators wary of anticompetitive practices. He's won approval from the Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission, and is now weeks away from confronting the final barrier, a group of state attorneys general taking him to court. If the deal finally goes through, it will likely be next year, and part of the deal is that Legere is CEO of the new company. He'll also benefit financially from the merger. All that said, like everything in the WeWork saga, it's hard to predict what will happen next. But whoever ends up leading the We Company has a lot of work cut out. When we spoke with Legere, he told us that he could distill his advice for running a large corporation: "Listen to your employees, listen to your customers, shut the f--- up, and do what they tell you." "Mobile" - Google News November 11, 2019 at 03:14PM https://ift.tt/2X61ko0 WeWork is reportedly in talks with T-Mobile head John Legere to be its CEO. Focus on behaviors rather than goals - Red Bluff Daily News Posted: 11 Nov 2019 05:27 PM PST ![]() Goal setting is a typical strategy for change. Hong Kong crisis escalates as protester shot by police - Al Jazeera English Posted: 11 Nov 2019 05:10 PM PST Hong Kong, China - Hong Kong police opened fire and wounded at least one protester during a fracas that was broadcast live on Facebook, as chaos erupted across the semi-autonomous territory. The incident during rush hour on Monday morning came as the city was still reeling from the death on Friday of a university student from injuries sustained in a fall as police dispersed protesters nearby. "The police assaulted an unarmed citizen with real bullets. This is an open declaration of war from the police," said 28-year-old restaurant owner, Marco Tam. "That's why the people in Hong Kong have such distrust about the police. They are no longer legitimate enforcers of the law as they don't have to account for their action." More:Along with Tam, a few hundred neighbourhood residents were locked in a standoff some 200 metres (656 feet) from the shooting in the harbourfront residential district. "Disband the force, sooner rather than later," they shouted. The group prised loose paving bricks and scattered styrofoam cargo boxes from the vegetable market nearby to build makeshift blockades as they faced off riot police. Earlier, while tackling a protester at a road junction that had been blocked, a traffic police officer fired at a 21-year-old masked man who was approaching. The protester was transferred to a hospital where he is being treated at the intensive care unit after having undergone an operation. In a separate incident, another man was set on fire during what appeared to be a dispute, according to footage posted on social media. In a televised address later on Monday, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the government would "spare no effort" in bringing an end to the months-long protests. "The violence has far exceeded the call for democracy and the demonstrators are now the people's enemy," Lam said in a defiant televised address.
"If there's still any wishful thinking that by escalating violence, the Hong Kong SAR [Special Administrative Region] government will yield to pressure, to satisfy the so-called political demands, I'm making this statement clear and loud here: that will not happen." Months-long protestsSince early June, Hong Kong has been rocked by protests triggered by a bill that would have allowed the extradition of accused individuals to mainland China to stand trial. Although officials formally withdrew the bill two weeks ago, public anger has been driven by their refusal to address protesters' demands for an independent inquiry against alleged police brutality; amnesty for the nearly 600 people charged with offences stemming from the protests; a retraction of police claims that protesters are guilty of rioting; and universal suffrage to elect the full legislature and chief executive. In recent weeks, calls for disbanding, or at least reorganising, the police force have grown out of public anger, with critics alleging indiscriminate and rampant use of force. The use of live rounds on Monday marked the third time over the past five weeks when Hong Kong police deployed lethal weapons against the protesters. "This is going to further escalate the confrontation," Lawrence Ho, a specialist in policing at the Education University of Hong Kong, told Al Jazeera. "De-escalation is a political decision, not a policing decision." How events unfoldedMonday morning started off with calls for mass strikes that saw less-than-widespread support. Some protesters took it upon themselves to block road traffic and sabotage light rail tracks. Moments after the shooting, in another district, a traffic police officer on a motorcycle was captured on amateur video ploughing into protesters laying down barricades on a highway. After many universities cancelled classes by midday, riot police stormed three of the campuses and fired tear gas and made several arrests. In the popular shopping district of Kowloon, at least one water cannon truck was deployed to disperse crowds. At lunchtime, office workers in Central, the heart of the business district, joined protesters congregating at a major junction and shouted: "Revenge, revenge. Five demands, not one less." Many, like Jenny Tse, braved volleys of tear gas unleashed with little protection. "I don't see how the shootings were warranted. Officers rarely even fire directly at hardened criminals," said Tse, 25, as she tucked her surgical mask into the sleeve of her cardigan for fear of being singled out by police enforcing the new ban on face-coverings. The Hong Kong Police Force said in a statement released on Monday afternoon: "Police has strict guidelines and orders regarding the use of firearms … All police officers are required to justify their enforcement actions." However, in a statement, Amnesty InternationalHong Kong said that "these are not policing measures - these are officers out of control with a mindset of retaliation." 'This is madness'Last week's fatality - the first at the scene of police action - has already bolstered calls for an independent inquiry into the case as well as into mounting allegations against police brutality in suppressing the unrest, as many in the protest movement believe the student may have been dodging tear gas or fleeing police pursuit. For months, government officials have urged the public to wait for the findings by the city's Independent Police Complaints Council - expected next month - before passing judgement. But last Friday, a panel of independent overseas experts, appointed by the council and headed by a former British chief inspector of constabulary, concluded that the council "lacks investigative capacity as we would expect in a body seeking to exercise oversight of the police". During an interlude between tear gas volleys in Central, Vikas Kumar, 60, ventured out for a coffee. The shipping executive donned an N95 particulate mask handed out by the guard at his office building but experienced some breathing difficulties. "This is madness," Kumar said. "Both sides need to cool down. Everyone's future is at stake." Hong Kong protests 2019: Protester is shot, and man set on fire - Vox.com Posted: 11 Nov 2019 04:50 PM PST A police officer shot a Hong Kong protester Monday morning, setting off a wave of violent confrontations in the territory where pro-democracy demonstrations have raged for nearly six months. Protesters on Monday had planned for a city-wide strike — intended to bring the city to a standstill — in response to the death of a protester, who fell from a parking garage last week and died. Demonstrators have blamed the police for the 22-year-old's death, as officers were firing tear gas in the area, though the circumstances are still a bit murky. That tragedy was a harbinger of the violence in Hong Kong on Monday, including the shooting of a 21-year-old protester by a police officer. The incident, which was filmed by a Hong Kong-based production company called Cupid Producers, showed a police officer grabbing one protester in an intersection and then brandishing his gun and firing at a different man wearing black, his face obscured by a scarf. In the video (warning: graphic footage), the victim tumbles to the street, and the officer appears to fire a few more shots, based on the audio — though it's not clear in what direction, as the footage gets shaky. The protester is currently in critical condition, according to the Hong Kong Free Press. The shooting of the protester is likely to intensify the unrest in Hong Kong, which is entering its 24th week of sustained demonstrations. The protests began in June over a controversial extradition bill that's since been withdrawn, but the uprising has continued as activists demand accountability for what they see as police abuses during the weeks-long protests and continue to fight to preserve and expand democracy in Hong Kong and resist the influence of China. Hong Kong, a former British colony, has its own government and judiciary under the "one country, two systems" rule, though pro-democracy advocates say China is trying to circumvent this. Monday was also not the first time that a Hong Kong police officer has fired at protesters. But the scene, captured on video, is likely to galvanize the movement that already views the police as overstepping their authority. In a separate area of Hong Kong, a man was set on fire after getting into a confrontation with protesters, also on Monday. A protester dressed in black doused him in a liquid and then put a light to the man, who was then engulfed in flames. The man is also in critical condition, according to the Guardian. These two disturbing incidents fueled increasingly tense protests across the territory on Monday afternoon — and showed just how volatile relations are in the city between pro-democracy activists and those opposed to the movement. Demonstrators descended on streets Monday, including in Hong Kong's central business district, to the police, who responded with tear gas at the crowds. Protesters vandalized transit stops and buses and businesses seen as pro-Beijing. A police officer was captured on video riding a motorcycle and clipping protesters on an otherwise deserted road. (Officials say he's been suspended.) At least 60 people were injured in Monday's turmoil. The unspooling violence puts Hong Kong in uncertain terrain, as China grows increasingly impatient with the unrest, and distrust between the protesters and the Hong Kong authorities has become toxic. Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam — whom protesters see as aligned with Beijing — condemned the violence on Monday, saying that demonstrators were "destroying society." "If there is still any wishful thinking that by escalating violence the government will yield to pressure," Lam said, according to the Guardian, "I am making this clear and loud here. That will not happen." But the political crisis in Hong Kong is becoming more untenable. Aggressive police tactics have inflamed the protesters, which has only escalated the brutality on both sides. Though the government rescinded the extradition bill, it's continued to ignore the other protest demands, including an independent investigation into the police and the chance to elect the city-state's leaders without input or meddling from Beijing. ![]() Chinese President Xi Jinping has given his backing to Lam, who was Beijing's preferred candidate in the last election. But Chinese officials are also urging Hong Kong's government to impose stricter security laws to curb the unrest — although that could just as likely ignite even more furious protests. "The need to safeguard national security and strengthen law enforcement have become prominent issues and urgent tasks facing the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and people from all walks of life," Zhang Xiaoming, the Chinese government official who runs the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, said this weekend, before Monday's protests. Many Hongkongers are looking toward November 24, when Hong Kong is holding its district council elections. Hong Kong has 18 district councils, representing 452 separate constituencies. These elections are semi-democratic; the chief executive can appoint a certain number of people to the councils, but the rest of the seats are up for a vote. This year, pro-democracy lawmakers are going all out to try to contest almost every seat they can that's held by a pro-Beijing lawmaker. But given the backdrop of the chaos in Hong Kong, it's unclear if these elections will go smoothly — or even happen. Last week, Hong Kong authorities arrested seven pro-democracy lawmakers, accusing them of obstructing the debate over the now-withdrawn extradition bill months ago. The pro-democracy advocate argued their arrests were an attempt to put a chilling effect on the local elections, where pro-democracy lawmakers are expected to win big. The Hong Kong government denied that they were doing anything other than upholding the law. But some fear that the Hong Kong government might cancel or postpone the elections, citing the violence in the city. And there has been violence against lawmakers seen as sympathetic to Beijing; one pro-Beijing lawmaker was stabbed on the campaign trail last week by an opponent posing as a supporter. There are still two weeks to go until that vote. As the date approaches, the volatility and anger in Hong Kong has only become more palpable and unpredictable, and the divisions seemingly more intractable than ever. Apple Card being investigated for alleged gender discrimination after viral tweet - WPVI-TV Posted: 11 Nov 2019 04:16 PM PST ![]() A string of viral tweets blasting Apple's new credit card for alleged gender discrimination has led to an investigation from New York's Department of Financial Services. The tech giant's credit card, launched in partnership with Goldman Sachs earlier this year, uses an algorithm to assign credit limits, and many online pointed out it may favor men over women. Goldman Sachs has issued a new statement on the matter. "We have not and never will make decisions based on factors like gender. In fact, we do not know your gender or marital status during the Apple Card application process," the statement reads. "Some of our customers have told us they received lower credit lines than they expected. In many cases, this is because their existing credit cards are supplemental cards under their spouse's primary account -- which may result in the applicant having limited personal credit history. Apple Card's credit decision process is not aware of your marital status at the time of the application." In addiiton, "if you believe that your credit line does not adequately reflect your creditworthiness because you may be in a similar situation, we want to hear from you. Based on additional information that we may request, we will re-evaluate your credit line," Goldman Sachs stated. David Heinemeier Hansson, a Danish software engineer, voiced his frustration late last week after he received a credit limit from the Apple card that was 20 times higher than his wife's, even though they "filed joint tax returns, live in a community-property state, and have been married for a long time," he wrote on Twitter. In a series of tweets that quickly went viral, Hansson wrote that his wife's credit score was higher than his and that Apple Card's customer support blamed their algorithm. "We simply were told, 'This is just how it is and you just have to accept that,'" he told ABC News' "Good Morning America." Scores of people on Twitter responded to Hansson's tweets saying the same thing happened to them -- including Apple's co-founder Steve Wozniak. Wozniak responded to one of Hansson's tweets, writing, "The same thing happened to us," and went on to say that he and his wife have "no separate bank accounts or credit cards or assets of any kind," yet he was given a 10-times higher credit limit on his Apple Card compared to his wife. A Goldman Sachs spokesperson responded to the allegations in an earlier statement Monday saying, "As with any other individual credit card, your application is evaluated independently." "We look at an individual's income and an individuals creditworthiness, which includes factors like personal credit scores, how much debt you have, and how that debt has been managed. Based on these factors, it is possible for two family members to receive significantly different credit decisions," the statement added. "In all cases, we have not and will not make decisions based on factors like gender." Apple did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment and has yet to publicly respond to the claims of gender discrimination. Linda Lacewell, the superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), confirmed the investigation as a result of the viral tweet in a Medium blogpost. "On Saturday morning, I read a Twitter thread from an Apple Card user - tech entrepreneur David Heinemeier Hansson - detailing how his card's credit limit was considerably higher - twenty times - than that of his wife, despite his wife having a higher credit score," Lacewell wrote. "I responded, announcing that the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) would examine whether the algorithm used to make these credit limit decisions violates state laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex." Lacewell added that the "black box" problem is an issue here "in which consumers have little visibility into how a decision is made or why they have been rejected." She called on any consumers who feel they may have been mistreated or discriminated against to share their stories with the New York DFS. Copyright © 2019 ABC News Internet Ventures.
