Netflix, T-Mobile, Alphabet: Stocks That Defined the Week - Wall Street Journal Posted: 16 Nov 2019 12:04 AM PST Netflix Inc. NFLX 1.87% A new drama is spooking investors of Netflix: the launch of Disney+. Walt Disney Co. DIS -1.69% 's new streaming service locked up 10 million subscribers in its first 24 hours despite a glitch that made Disney+ difficult to watch for several hours. The service's aggressive debut Tuesday boosted Disney's shares by 7% the next day and sent Netflix shares down 3.1%. Netflix is still the industry's dominant streamer, with 158 million subscribers. T-Mobile TMUS 1.60% US Inc. Could WeWork be replacing one eccentric leader with another? WeWork has been in talks with T-Mobile Chief Executive John Legere to take over leadership of the troubled office-sharing startup, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. WeWork's parent, formally known as We Co., is searching for a CEO who can stabilize the company following the erratic tenure of co-founder Adam Neumann. Like Mr. Neumann, Mr. Legere is known for his aggressive, unconventional style. The 61-year-old has turned around T-Mobile's operations, luring millions of cellphone customers from larger competitors and initiating the pending Sprint Corp. takeover. T-Mobile shares fell 1.6% Monday. Southwest Airlines Co. LUV 0.28% U.S. regulators recently considered grounding more than three dozen Southwest jets because the airline couldn't show that they met all mandatory safety standards, according to government documents. The Journal reported Monday that the carrier indicated in letters to the Federal Aviation Administration that it previously found dozens of problematic repairs on other planes, done before it bought those aircraft. Senior FAA officials permitted the planes to continue carrying passengers once Southwest agreed to accelerate required inspections. Shares fell 0.7% Tuesday. Alphabet Inc. GOOG 1.79% Alphabet's Google already knows what you read online. Now it is interested in your medical records. The internet search giant is working with one of the U.S.'s largest health-care systems to collect and crunch the detailed personal-health information of millions of people across 21 states, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The initiative, code-named "Project Nightingale," has sparked a federal inquiry and concern from regulators and lawmakers about whether Google and St. Louis-based Ascension are adequately protecting patient data. Ascension, without notifying patients or doctors, has begun sharing with Google personally identifiable information on millions of patients, including names and dates of birth; lab tests; doctor diagnoses; and medication and hospitalization history. Alphabet shares fell 0.8% Monday. Nike Inc. The Everything Store is losing one of its top-selling brands: Nike. The sneaker giant said late Tuesday it would stop selling its clothes and sneakers directly to Amazon.com Inc. as it has decided to focus on its direct business, though it will continue to seek partnerships with other retailers and platforms. The company agreed in 2017 to sell products to Amazon in exchange for stricter policing of counterfeits and restrictions on unsanctioned sales. Nike itself only sold a relatively small amount of goods on the site and mostly offered down-market items, The Journal reported. Nike shares gained 2% Wednesday. Walmart Inc. WMT -1.48% Walmart provided some early holiday cheer for retailers when it released results showing that sales rose in the most recent quarter. The news alleviated some uncertainty about the resilience of the American shopper heading into a crucial year-end period for the retailing industry. E-commerce sales rose 41% in the U.S. bolstered by online grocery orders as Walmart competed with Amazon.com to be the most convenient shopping option for Americans. In the U.S., Walmart now has more than 3,000 locations where customers can drive up to pick up groceries and more than 1,400 locations that offer home delivery from stores. Still, Walmart shares slipped 0.3%. Under Armour Inc. UA 2.63% Former executives of Under Armour said they took aggressive measures to keep a winning streak going for the sportswear company. These executives told The Wall Street Journal they borrowed business from future quarters to mask slowing demand, leaned on retailers to take products early and redirected goods intended for its factory stores to off-price chains to book sales in the final days of a quarter. The goal was to extend a 26-quarter streak of 20% sales growth. The company, whose accounting is now under scrutiny by federal investigators, said it is confident in its accounting practices, revenue recognition and investor disclosures. It said it operated within standard industry practices and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. Shares rose 3.9% Friday. 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Indonesia Coast - The New York Times Posted: 16 Nov 2019 12:03 AM PST JAKARTA, Indonesia — A strong earthquake hit off the Indonesian coast in the Molucca Sea early Friday, prompting a tsunami warning for nearby areas. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the magnitude 7.1 quake was centered in the sea about 140 kilometers (86 miles) northwest of Ternate in North Maluku province. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency said the tsunami warning issued for North Sulawesi and North Maluku was cancelled about two hours after the quake hit. It said a small tsunami of up to 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) occurred in North Maluku's Ternate city about 26 minutes after the strong quake hit, and 10 centimeters (4 inches) in North Sulawesi's Bitung town about 51 minutes after the quake. Authorities have called on residents in North Sulawesi and North Maluku to return to their homes. The national disaster agency said it was still gathering information on any damage that may have been caused by the earthquake. Canada admit early USMNT goal in loss was "worst thing that could have happened" - MLSsoccer.com Posted: 15 Nov 2019 11:03 PM PST ORLANDO, Fla. – Canada's dreams of humbling the US men's national team for a second time in as many months were thrown out the window under two minutes into Friday night's meeting at Exploria Stadium. Jordan Morris finished at the back post following a corner kick, and that set a 4-1 win in motion. It was a gut punch of sorts, according to midfielder Samuel Piette. "That was the worst thing that could have happened to us," said Piette, who plays for the Montreal Impact. "When you concede the first goal, it's always hard mentally and psychologically. That was the worst thing that could have happened to us." Before the encounter, Canada spoke proudly about the potential impact on the program's hopes in the Concacaf Nations League. More pointedly, they reflected on how the result would impact their quest to make the Hexagonal and have a more straightforward path to qualification for the 2022 World Cup. SeatGeek has great deals for future MLS matchesGET TICKETS Official Ticketing Partner of Major League SoccerBut, as has proven to be the case before, the thought of Canada just needing a draw was a death knell. They held the advantage in possession (63.6% to 36.4%) and passes (520 vs. 301), but Canada faced a resurgent American side that had their pride hurt a month ago in Toronto. "I think their approach was different," said Piette. "They all came back and basically played a deep block, and it was hard for us to find the space in behind. They let us have the ball more than the previous game, and I think we managed the ball well. In the final third we couldn't create anything." Morris' early goal put Canada on the back foot. They clawed a goal back in the 72nd minute via Steven Vitoria off a set piece, but that only made it 3-1 before Gyasi Zardes volleyed home to complete his brace. "We came in here to get a result," said head coach John Herdman. "We didn't dump it down, we came in on the front foot, we pressed them for 90 minutes. We controlled the game for periods of time and I think there were a lot of positives. We just weren't clinical. They were very clinical." Qualification in tournaments like the Nations League and World Cup often comes down to away form. But for all the talk of a reinvigorated Canadian program, that old demon again haunted them. "We tried playing a style today which was different from what we did in Toronto, but it felt a bit forced," said Derek Cornelius, who came on for the injured Doneil Henry in the second half. "I think that's what played into their hands in the first half. A lot of what we wanted to do, we tried to force it when it wasn't on and just gave them opportunities from nothing." Posted: 15 Nov 2019 10:07 PM PST Former "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" actress Diane Neal has filed a lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend, magician JB Benn, accusing her former partner of a pattern of abuse that included sexual assault and torturing her pets. In the latest chapter of a two-year legal battle, Neal, 43, said in an amended complaint filed Tuesday that her ex, whom she called a "manipulative and maniacal fraudster," had "defrauded her of millions" and "violently inflicted emotional distress," according to The Daily Beast. Benn, she reportedly said, subjected her to "a campaign of isolation, terror and (physical and sexual) assault, and destroyed her reputation by doing so." Neal and Benn, 44, met while attending a charity event at a Utah ski resort in 2013, and soon after, began dating; within two months, the pair had grown extremely close, with Benn spending an ample amount of time with Neal at her home in New Jersey, but the relationship, which Neal described as "sweet" and "simple," ultimately took a negative — and allegedly, at times, violent — turn. Neal alleged that she once woke up in March 2018 to find that her former partner was sexually assaulting her, penetrating her with his finger, while she slept, and filming it on his phone, according to the outlet. This allegedly took place days after the couple had already parted ways. She also said that a year prior, in August 2017, Benn started an argument with her that culminated in him viciously assaulting her, kicking her hard enough to leave bruises, and then spending the remainder of the night in the driveway, blocking her from leaving the property. These alleged assaults — that always involved kicking, because he did not want to risk injuring his hands — happened more than once, she claimed, and at one point caused "widespread contusions and/or hematomas" on her legs. Neal said that Benn also abused her pets; Neal claimed in her complaint that Benn slit the throat of one of her dogs, a toy poodle, and then placed the blame on her cat. Neal also said that her cat — the same cat that Benn had once "bragged" about bashing in the head — mysteriously disappeared, as did some of the animal's kittens, the outlet reports. Benn is also accused of abusing another one of Neal's dogs, breaking the animal's back and leaving it disabled. In addition to the allegations of abuse, Neal also claimed in her suit that Benn refused to include her name on the title of a house, located in upstate New York, that she says they bought together, according to the outlet. She also alleged that her ex was a thief, and would steal "hundreds of thousands of dollars from her" in the course of their relationship by stealing checks from her and using her credit cards for his own purchases, among other things, she said. Neal filed a suit against her ex in April 2018, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. Neither party, who were contacted by the outlet via their representatives, have responded to requests for comment. Benn has denied Neal's allegations against him, and has attributed her accusations to their "bad breakup," according to The Daily Beast. In January 2019, he specifically addressed her allegation of sexual assault in an affidavit in which he called the claims "completely false and outrageously interposed as a tactic to cloud the fact that, on the merits, [Neal] has no entitlement to the relief she seeks." He went on to accuse his ex of having an "ongoing vendetta against [him]," and lying in order to gain "sympathy" and "support," according to the outlet. Neal and Benn's lengthy legal battle has seen numerous twists and turns. Benn was arrested on April 1 on a misdemeanor stalking charge for allegedly trying to "initiate unwanted contact with Diane Neal via email" twice in the previous month, according to a criminal complaint New York State Police filed in Ulster County and that was obtained by The Daily Beast. Authorities alleged that he drove past Neal's house multiple times in a 15-minute time span and, on another occasion, "[caused] Neal to fear for her life" by going to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office while she was there, according to police. Benn pleaded guilty on Tuesday to disorderly conduct and was ordered to pay $200 in various fines and fees, in addition to adhering to a two year-long order of protection that was granted on Neal's behalf, the outlet reports. United Airlines Extends Boeing 737 MAX Grounding Until March - Simple Flying Posted: 15 Nov 2019 09:43 PM PST United Airlines has joined Southwest and American Airlines in grounding the Boeing 737 until March. The announcement was made as the aircraft's grounding enters its ninth month. In total, all three American carriers will have grounded the aircraft for around a year in total. The Boeing 737 was first grounded back in March following a second fatal crash involving the type in the space of six months. While the FAA and Boeing were initially hesitant to ground the aircraft, President Trump eventually waded in. Boeing is now working on getting a software fix approved on the aircraft. This would allow the aircraft to renter service sometime in January for most carriers. What's the latest from United?United has now removed the Boeing 737 MAX from its schedules until the 4th of March, 2020. This will take the aircraft to a grounding of just under a year. According to The Points Guy, around 3,500 extra flights will be cancelled as a result of the action. This equates to approximately 93 flights per day. This is not the first time that the 737 MAX's reentry has been pushed back. In fact, since the grounding was first announced, it has been slowly pushed back in small steps. Featured Video:No compulsory MAX flightsUnited's CEO, Oscar Munoz is more than aware that the popularity of the 737 MAX has been cut. This could potentially be due to the increasing use age of social media apps within society. What may have previously filled a slot on the 10 O'Clock news, is now right there, in everybody's hands. Earlier in November Mr Munoz told Simple Flying in London that the airline would not force any passengers to fly on the aircraft once it re-enters service. United Airlines will make it absolutely clear to passengers if they will be flying on the MAX. The airline will also let passengers booked on the 737 MAX to rebook for free if they suddenly get cold feet about their flights. In addition to all of the above, Mr Munoz has also pledged to be aboard the very first flight that the company operates with the Boeing 737 MAX. The thinking is that he wouldn't get on the plane if he wasn't convinced that it was safe. The exact timeline of the Boeing 737 MAX's return to service is currently unknown. However, Boeing was recently talking about completing the re-certification in the coming weeks. This would allow the manufacturer to resume deliveries in December, with a view to returning the aircraft to service in January. Simple Flying has contacted United Airlines for comment. Would you fly on United's Boeing 737 MAX? Let us know why or why not in the comments below. Hong Kong protesters have 'the university to themselves' - FRANCE 24 English Posted: 15 Nov 2019 09:23 PM PST Issued on: Modified: As anti-government protests continue in Hong Kong, students and other demonstrators took over major school campuses his week, building barricades on at least five campuses and stockpiling petrol bombs amid four days of the some of the worst violence in decades in the former British colony. Advertising The five-month crisis in Hong Kong entered a new phase on Monday when hardcore protesters embarked on a campaign to "blossom everywhere" across the international financial hub, in a bid to stretch police resources as thinly as possible. At the barricaded Polytechnic University, protesters have been practicing their skills with bows and arrows and petrol bombs in a half-empty swimming pool. "There have been moments where they have battled with police with tear gas, but they've pretty much got the university to themselves now. They've barricaded it on three to four sides," FRANCE 24 correspondent Oliver Farry reports from the campus in Kowloon. The protesters "also even managed to shut down the Cross-Harbour Tunnel crossing, which is right next door to the university and one of the three ways that Hong Kongers can pass from the Kowloon peninsula to Hong Kong Island." While demonstrations earlier tended to be confined to weeknights and weekends, protesters have throughout this work week managed to paralyse parts of city. "Whether it's eventually going to tire the patience of Hong Kongers is another thing," Farry reports. "This is probably something that the government is gambling on because they know that it has been very, very hard so far to alienate the protesters from the public..." With no end to the protests in sight, analysts warn the financial and trading centre potentially faces a longer and deeper slump than during the global financial crisis a decade ago and the SARS epidemic in 2003. According to government data confirmed on Friday, Hong Kong sank into recession for the first time in a decade in the third quarter, weighed down by the increasingly violent protests and an escalating US-China trade war. Rebellious students abandon occupation of Hong Kong campus - Manistee News Advocate Posted: 15 Nov 2019 08:53 PM PST
HONG KONG (AP) — Rebellious students and anti-government protesters abandoned their occupation of at least one major Hong Kong university after a near weeklong siege by police, but some other schools remained under control of demonstrators on Saturday. Major traffic disruptions plagued the city even as schools and universities remain closed in the city of 7.5 million people. Police retook control of suburban Chinese University of Hong Kong after students and protesters left. Authorities said that all northbound lanes of Tolo Highway, which the protesters had blocked, were reopened, and the southbound lanes would follow soon. Police and protesters fought intense running battles at the Chinese University campus Tuesday, which had been transformed into a fortress by hundreds of protesters. The presidents of nine universities issued a joint statement late Friday calling on the government to resolve the political deadlock and restore safety and public order. "No political viewpoint gives a license to damage property, employ physical threats, or use violence against individuals," the statement read in part. "It is regrettable that societal disagreement has led to university campuses becoming major political battlefields, and that the government response has so far not been effective." The anti-government protests are now in their sixth month. One viral Reddit poster explains how the Apple Card fails compared to other cards - MarketWatch Posted: 15 Nov 2019 07:48 PM PST These unsatisfied customers aren't giving the Apple Card much credit — and one writer in the popular discussion forum Reddit Inc. outlined what he describes as some of the most salient problems with the card in a social-media post that has gone viral. The Reddit user, under the name PoliticalGuy2016, delivered a particularly biting critique of Apple's AAPL, +1.19% card in a post entitled, "I've owned the Apple Card for 3 months, this is why it sucks compared to other credit cards." The poster, who identified himself as David and declined to give his last name, told MarketWatch that he vented his frustrations on Reddit before going to bed on Thursday night because he was tired of seeing rave reviews from tech enthusiasts online that overlooked the fact that the Apple Card was "missing the basic functionality" of many other cards. "I woke up and was like, wow — I have a lot of notifications," laughed David, 23, who works in fintech in Washington, D.C. Indeed, his original post had picked up almost 1,200 comments over 12 hours by early Friday afternoon. David's comments come three months after Apple's hotly anticipated laser-etched, titanium card back by Goldman Sachs GS, +0.37% hit the market. Cardholders and analysts have responded with mixed reviews. Early controversies have included: accusing the card's algorithms of discriminating against women; the fact that AppleCard wasn't initially reporting consumer payment information to the credit bureaus; as well as the widely mocked care instructions, which warn that leather wallets and jeans can discolor the sleek card. Still others love showing off the sleek card as a status symbol — especially those reaping 3% cash back on Apple products (under $1,000 anyway) at the Apple Store, as well as retailers and apps like Walgreens WBA, +1.07%, Uber UBER, +3.08%, Uber Eats and T-Mobile TMUS, +1.60%. David's other gripes include the card's "absolutely dismal" 1% cash back reward when using the physical card. (It offers 2% back when using Apple Pay, however.) "Most cards offer between 1.5% and 2%," he writes, citing the Citi CITI, +0.31% Double Cash card in particular, which offers unlimited 2% cash back on everything." An Apple representative wasn't immediately able to respond to an emailed request from MarketWatch on the problems cited by its critics. Read more: Apple's new credit card offers 2% 'daily' cash back — what consumers need to know about it David allows that the 3% cash back on Apple-related purchases is generous, but adds that this often gets beaten by other cards. For example, the Amazon Rewards Visa Card from JPM, +0.72% Chase offers 5% cash back on all Amazon AMZN, -0.86% and Whole Foods purchases, as well as 2% back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores, and 1% back overall. (And it's also a metal card, if you're looking for that cool factor). You also can't add authorized users to the card, he complained. "What kind of 1980s bulls— is this?" he asks. He's learned that he can't make payments on his desktop or laptop computer; payments must be made on the mobile app or speaking with a customer service rep by phone. "I don't know any credit card provider that is so archaic you cannot pay via a web portal," he writes. But for him, the biggest downside is that the card doesn't integrate with budgeting apps such as Mint, which he says is "absolutely ridiculous." Bottom line — he gives the Apple Card four out of 10 stars, admitting the four stars are only because "the flex is nice when you clank it on a table." "I signed up because I'm interested in maximizing rewards, and I wanted the 3% cash back on App Store and Apple Store transactions. And, I thought it looked cool. I wanted to actually hold it, because it is cool — physically," he tells MarketWatch. "But it lacks the basic functionality that almost every other credit card has, he claims. One Apple spokesperson said the Cupertino, Calif., tech giant is working on allowing customers to export data into budgeting apps. Related: Here's everything Apple isn't telling you about its new credit card Still, the early problems have caused some to stop using the newfangled card altogether. "I got the card for clout a few months ago," chimes in another, "but I'm using it less and less, and will eventually stop. The cash back has been terrible." Some complain that the Apple Card "locks" you into Apple's ecosystem because you need Apple Pay to take advantage of the best cash back benefits, which requires having an iPhone. Others have taken issue with the Apple Card's customer service, such as one user who says someone stole their card number, yet a customer service rep reportedly responded with, "that can't happen." And some others cited the "sexist algorithms" that have been making headlines lately — including from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak — that have launched an investigation into how the Apple Card determines credit limits and interest rates for cardholders. Read more: Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak also alleges that the Apple Card discriminated against his wife "I agree with the original poster that 1% cash back with the physical card is below average, and even 2% on most Apple Pay purchases isn't ground-breaking (a few merchants offer 3%)," Ted Rossman, industry analyst at CreditCards.com, told MarketWatch. "Most people would come out ahead by using a card such as Citi Double Cash which offers 2% cash back on all purchases (technically 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay it off). Apple Card's lack of a sign-up bonus is also disappointing for rewards aficionados." "The Apple Card is, at its core (no pun intended), a very basic cash-back card," agreed Sara Rathner, credit cards expert at NerdWallet. It has cool technological bells and whistles, but if what a consumer really wants is a steady stream of cash back without having to debate where to use a card and when, there are other options on the market." But Rossman also noted that "we're probably all guilty of holding Apple Card to a higher standard," so the card could be a victim of the brand's previous success. And he gave the card credit for "doing some nice things around the margins, like improving security by housing the card number, expiration date and card verification value in your phone rather than on the physical card." He recommends it for those with subprime credit, or someone who is new to credit, as "you're unlikely to qualify for a card with better rewards than Apple Card." Indeed, there were also comments on the Reddit thread that support the card. Some say that their Apple Card interest rates are half as much as those on their other cards. Those who use Apple Pay often say they are reaping cash back rewards, and Apple reps have said that more apps and retailers will be part of the 3% Daily Cash club in the future. Jordan Morris has goal, assist in USA’s win over Canada - Sounder At Heart Posted: 15 Nov 2019 07:43 PM PST Fresh off winning MLS Cup, Jordan Morris helped lead the United States to a win over Canada in Concacaf Nations League. His goal and assist in this game gives him three goals and four assists over his past three USMNT appearances. Morris got the USA off to a blazing start, scoring in the 2nd minute. The USA's second goal also came through Morris. After a bit of a rough first touch, Morris recovered to put a perfect left-footed cross on the head of Gyasi Zardes, who would later score again to put the final touches on the 4-1 win. With one more potential game this year, Morris has already had his best year for the Red, White and Blue. Morris' three goals and seven assists more than doubled his career output for the USMNT. He now has eight goals and eight assists in 37 international appearances. Sounders teammate Cristian Roldan did not play in the match. Boeing settles several more lawsuits over Max plane crashes - Manistee News Advocate Posted: 15 Nov 2019 07:03 PM PST DALLAS (AP) — Boeing is settling a few more of the roughly 150 lawsuits filed by families of passengers killed in two crashes of the 737 Max jet. A Seattle law firm said Friday it settled four of the 46 cases it's handling for families of passengers who were on board a Lion Air Max that crashed off the coast of Indonesia in October 2018. On Thursday, a federal judge in Chicago approved settlements of nine other cases involving the same crash. A Boeing spokesman said the company has settled "dozens" of claims. Terms of the settlements were kept confidential at Boeing's insistence, according to lawyers. Chicago-based Boeing has spent about a year making changes to flight software that played a role in the crashes. The company expects Federal Aviation Administration approval in January for a new pilot-training program around the changes, which would let U.S. airlines resume using the plane early next year. The FAA, however, has not laid out a timetable for approving Boeing's changes, and the agency's chief vowed again Friday that the plane won't fly until it's safe. "I know there is a lot of pressure to return this aircraft to service quickly," FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson said Friday in a video for agency employees, "but I want you to know, and I want you to take the time you need and focus solely on safety." According to federal court records, more than 50 lawsuits were filed against Boeing by families of passengers on the Lion Air Max that crashed Oct. 29, 2018, and about 100 lawsuits were filed relating to the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Max on March 10. Boeing Co. is working with a mediator, "and we are pleased to have resolved dozens of claims on terms that we believe fairly compensate the victims' families," Boeing spokesman Peter Pedraza said in a statement. "We remain committed to this mediation process." Boeing didn't disclose the amount of the settlements, but Pedraza said Boeing has paid more than $7 million in separate aid to the families since setting up a special fund two months ago. The company's legal strategy, however, has come under fire by lawmakers and lawyers for the passengers' families. Lawyers for Boeing have said in several court filings that they could seek to move the lawsuits to courts in Indonesia, on grounds that it would be more convenient — most of the victims were Indonesians. Legal experts say judgments in Indonesian courts would likely be smaller. Boeing lawyers have not yet asked the judge to move the cases, but the mere threat of a motion could be helping the company negotiate with victims' families. Alexandra Wisner, a Chicago-area aviation lawyer whose settlements were approved by a federal judge this week, said lawyers like her must consider Boeing's potential defenses — including the ability to send the cases overseas — when negotiating for their clients. She said, however, that it would be overly simple to suggest that Boeing's strategy resulted in lower settlements for her clients. Seattle aviation lawyer Mark Lindquist, whose firm announced four new settlements and has 42 other cases pending against Boeing, said there are strong reasons for keeping the cases in the U.S. "The U.S. has a great interest in the safety of aircraft manufactured in the United States, most of the evidence of Boeing's wrongdoing is here in the U.S., and only a United States court can hold Boeing accountable," he said. Last month, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg told a congressional committee he wasn't aware of the company's legal strategy. That drew a skeptical response by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., chairman of the House Transportation Committee. "You're looking at hundreds of millions, billions of dollars of claims ... and you don't know that that's happening?" DeFazio said. "Congressman, my focus has been on safety," Muilenburg replied. On Friday, DeFazio said he sent several follow-up questions to Muilenburg, including whether Boeing intends to move the Lion Air lawsuits to Indonesia. The settlements that have been publicly announced or revealed in court filings all involve families of passengers on the first Max crash. The families agreed to take part in mediation with Boeing. Lawyers for families of passengers in the second crash, in Ethiopia, have opted instead to seek documents from Boeing. Victims in that crash represented many more nationalities. Wisner, who has clients related to both incidents, said Boeing is open to more second-guessing about the second crash. "What did they know, what did they learn from the first crash, and why didn't they take any action" to ground the plane immediately? she said. United extends grounding of 737 Max fleet to early March - CNBC Posted: 15 Nov 2019 04:48 PM PST United Airlines planes, including a Boeing 737 MAX 9 model, are pictured at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, March 18, 2019. Loren Elliott | Reuters United Airlines is following Southwest and American Airlines in delaying the return of the Boeing 737 Max on its flight schedules into early March. United is pulling the jets off its schedule until March 4, the company said Friday. It expects to cancel approximately 5,100 flights in November and December and roughly 3,468 flights in 2020. "For more than 90 years, the safety of our customers and employees at United has come first, which is why we have cooperated fully with the FAA's independent review of the MAX aircraft, and we won't put our customers and employees on that plane until regulators make their own independent assessment that it is safe to do so," said the airline in a press release. The airline joins Southwest Airlines and American Airlines, which also pushed back their respective return-to-service dates last week. Southwest announced that it will remove all 737 Max planes from its flight schedule through March 6, while American Airlines said it will delay commercial use of the aircraft until March 5. United had previously grounded its fleet of 14 737 Max planes through Jan. 5. Boeing, meanwhile, has continued to suffer from the worldwide grounding of the 737 Max. The manufacturer delivered only 20 commercial jetliners in October, while its net orders for the year fell to 45 in the same month. Boeing came under further pressure in late October after documents surfaced detailing that engineers raised concerns about the 737 Max's faulty MCAS flight-control system before two fatal crashes that killed 346 people, one in October 2018 and one in March. Pending approval by regulators, Boeing said it anticipates resuming 737 Max deliveries as soon as December and could resume commercial service in January. Hong Kong official hurt after being targeted by protesters in London - CNN Posted: 15 Nov 2019 04:38 PM PST According to London Metropolitan Police, a woman was taken to hospital by ambulance after "suffering an injury to her arm." The force told CNN it was investigating an alleged assault and "no arrests had been made at this stage." A video on social media appears to show Cheng surrounded by a crowd as she was walking to a lecture at London's Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). It then shows her suddenly on the ground. The incident comes amid renewed protests in the semi-autonomous Chinese city, which has been gripped by almost six months of anti-government protests originally sparked by an extradition bill with China. As Justice Secretary, Cheng was one of several senior officials, along with Chief Executive Carrie Lam, closely linked to the now-shelved bill. According to Hong Kong public broadcaster RTHK, Cheng was in the UK "on a trip to promote Hong Kong as a venue for dispute resolution." In a statement, Lam "expressed outrage at the attack" on Cheng, saying it was "barbaric and violated the principles of a civilized society." The Chinese Embassy in London claimed Cheng was "besieged and attacked by dozens of anti-China and pro-independence activists." In a statement, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) -- of which Cheng is a former President -- said Cheng was "invited as the first woman and past President to deliver the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' prestigious Alexander Lecture at CIArb's building in London." The institute said that while Cheng was entering the building she "was assaulted by a crowd," adding that "CIArb is committed to peacefully resolving conflict and deplores the use of violence, particularly to a guest to the United Kingdom." In a statement, the UK's Foreign Commonwealth Office said it was "very concerned" and in contact with the Chinese Embassy and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. Protests continued throughout the day in Hong Kong Friday, with thousands of office workers joining lunchtime demonstrations. This week has seen a renewed spate of violent unrest in recent days, following the death of a 22-year-old student who fell near the scene of demonstrations last Friday. Protesters have clashed with riot police at multiple locations, paralyzing much of the territory and forcing citywide school cancellations. Posted: 15 Nov 2019 06:09 AM PST Here Are All The Celebs Who've Spoken Out In Support Of Taylor Swift After She Exposed Scott Borchetta And Scooter Braun Again - BuzzFeed In case you missed it, Taylor Swift has spoken out in denouncement of former record label boss, Scott Borchetta, and his new business partner, Scooter Braun, for the second time in five months.Back in June, Taylor expressed devastation that her former record label, Big Machine, had been sold to Scooter for $300 million, meaning that he would own all of her master recordings "in perpetuity".Since then, Taylor has revealed that she plans to re-record her first six albums when she is legally allowed to do so in November 2020.However, today Taylor has released a lengthy statement claiming that Scott and Scooter are effectively holding her music hostage, preventing her from performing a medley of her hits at this year's AMAs where she's being honoured as Artist of the Decade.Taylor went on to allege that Scott will only grant her permission to use her own music in both the performance and documentary if she agrees to two demands — firstly, she abandon the plan to re-record her masters next year, and secondly, she stop speaking publicly about him and Scooter Braun.Taylor ended her statement with an impassioned plea for other musicians — especially those signed to Scooter's management company — to speak out in support of her, in the hopes the men might change their mind. While none of the list of artists on Scooter's roster — which includes Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato — have so far said anything, here are the celebrities who have spoken up.Taylor's best friend Selena Gomez released a lengthy statement revealing that she felt "sick" and "extremely angry" over the situation.Halsey shared a statement on Instagram Stories in which she suggested Scooter and Scott's alleged actions were a "punishment" and an "attempt to silence" Taylor. And Halsey went on to share another Story of herself singing along to Taylor Swift's "Mean".Taylor's long-time friend Gigi Hadid took to Twitter to tell Scott and Scooter to "do the right thing" and allow Taylor's fans to "celebrate" her music.Ruby Rose reposted Taylor's statement on Instagram alongside a message reading: "This is not OK."Lily Allen said she stood in "solidarity" with Taylor, adding that the music industry is overdue its "own #MeToo movement".Lily went on to defend Taylor against people criticising her for not "reading the small print" of her original record contract, which she signed aged 15."She was 16 or something," Lily added. "Not allowed to drink or have sex, but somehow allowed to sign away her life."Joel Little — producer of four tracks on Taylor's latest album including "ME!" and "You Need To Calm Down" — described the situation as "unbelievable" and "completely messed up".Joseph Kahn — who's directed some of Taylor's most well-known music videos including "Bad Blood" and "Look What You Made Me Do" — branded Scott and Scooter "assholes".He added: "Scooter and Scott sold Carlyle Group on false premise: Taylor would cooperate on them buying her catalogue. She will not."Todrick Hall reposted Taylor's statement on his Instagram Story alongside a message of his own reading: "This makes me soooo angry."Sara Bareilles called the situation an "outrageous abuse of power".Ella Eyre said she was "so mad".Tinashe responded to Taylor's statement directly, writing: "Fuck that. We're with you."She went on to reply to a Taylor Swift fan who thanked her for speaking out by saying that the news had "genuinely" made her "sick to [her] stomach".Country star Jordan Pruitt suggested Scott and Scooter "focus [their sights] on things other than bullying the artist of this century"."#IStandWithTaylorAlways," she added in a second tweet.Queer Eye's Bobby Berk retweeted Taylor's statement alongside an angry emoji and the message: "Not cool at all".Perez Hilton lamented the fact that so few "big name musicians" — including the few indirectly mentioned in her statement — had spoken out in support of Taylor. We'll continue to update this post as more celebrities speak out.2019-11-15 12:12:00Z https://www.buzzfeed.com/elliewoodward/celebs-taylor-swift-scott-borchetta-scooter-braun-drama |

Review: 'The Crown,' Untarnished - NPR Posted: 15 Nov 2019 06:08 AM PST Review: 'The Crown,' Untarnished - NPR Des Willie/Netflix The third season of The Crown drops on Netflix on Sunday, November 17th. "One just has to get on with it." That's Elizabeth II (played by Olivia Colman, taking over from Claire Foy), in the first scene of The Crown's third season. She's addressing her assistants, there, who have just unveiled to her the more-current portrait of the Queen set to replace her younger self on a postage stamp. Except, she isn't really addressing them. She's talking to herself, in the resigned, practical, stiff-upper-lip manner that the series ascribes to her. This is The Crown's Elizabeth — grounded, unflashy, unexpressive, a portrait in thwarted desire and strangled emotion. Colman slips into Foy's sensible brown shoes easily, her large, expressive eyes constantly struggling to keep from betraying her thoughts. But Colman's so good at keeping Elizabeth fully present in any given scene that the roiling going on below her surface politesse becomes as much The Crown's subject as that studied, implacable surface itself. "One just has to get on with it." She's also talking to us, of course. She — and series creator Peter Morgan — are saying, "Yes, we've replaced the cast, but don't worry — we've kept the formula. Relax. We've got this. Pip-pip." That formula, a focus on the burden of privilege, on the misery of the obscenely rich, on the despair occasioned by wielding only purely ceremonial power — call it "heavy hangs the (figure)head that wears the crown" — is a tricky one to pull off. As much as we as a culture adore the soap-opera agonistes of the wealthy and powerful, the world of The Crown is as plain and grounded as Elizabeth herself. Its determination to graft its narrative onto select moments in recent British history means it's not interested in heedless, soapy excess — you won't catch Liz and Princess Margaret (a wild-eyed, more-melancholic-than-baseline Helena Bonham Carter) tossing each other into a lily pond. Though that would — let us stipulate, as fellow reasoned adults — be awesome. But as The Crown's first two seasons showed amply, there is greatly satisfying drama to be mined from the fundamentally undramatic. The Crown season three doubles down on the series' practice of treating the tiniest diplomatic faux pas as something bearing the immediate potential to threaten the Empire to its veddy core. In episode after episode, it's Elizabeth's reaction — or pointed lack of same — to various events of the day (a financial crisis, a mining disaster, nationwide strikes, Prince Charles becoming Prince of Wales, the moon landing, a scandal involving Margaret) that drives the plot. It takes a good deal of maneuvering from Morgan and his writers to embed the British royal family more centrally in these events than they actually were, but it's impossible to begrudge them that fact, because it means we get more of this stellar cast, mooning about for our enjoyment. Whether it's Tobias Menzes' insufferable Prince Philip (taking over jaw-clenching duties from Matt Smith this season) experiencing what he would be loath to call an identity crisis, or the hangdog Prince Charles (embodied, in all his gangly, stoop-shouldered gooniness, by Josh O'Connor, an actor whose protuberant ears must have freed up some of the series' hair-and-makeup budget for more Princess Margaret wigs) longing after young Camilla Shand (Emerald Fennell), there is something sublimely comforting about the whole affair: all those plummy vowels, all those rooms tufted and draped and antimacassar-ed in ways that still somehow manage to seem vaguely industrial, all that gray light filtering through leaded windows, all those Prime Ministers expressing a slowly-dawning respect for Elizabeth's diplomatic acumen and horse-sense, because of course they do. It's a comfort to know — or at least, to convince yourself, aided by the doughty work of some of the best actors on the planet — that the Royals, a class of pampered, protected, egregiously privileged people for whom the term privilege was coined, experience one iota of the everyday existential dread the rest of us do. "Things work themselves out in the end," chirps Elizabeth, in season three's final episode. It's just something she tells herself to allow herself to carry on. One just has to get on with it. Things work themselves out in the end. She says these things, but Colman shows us she doesn't buy them. We don't, either. But as you binge these ten episodes, you ensconce yourself in the hermetic, protective world of The Crown, and in that brief span of hours, you almost believe her. 2019-11-15 12:00:00Z https://www.npr.org/2019/11/15/778814008/the-crown-gets-a-fresh-polish |

Strong quake hits Indonesia sea; tsunami risk reported - Al Jazeera English Posted: 15 Nov 2019 02:20 AM PST A powerful earthquake has hit off the Indonesian coast in the Molucca Sea, creating the risk of tsunami in nearby areas. The US Geological Survey reported the magnitude-7.1 earthquake, which struck early on Friday morning, was centred in the sea about 140 kilometres (86 miles) northwest of Ternate in North Maluku province. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning, urging people to stay away from the coastline. The earthquake awakened residents in some cities in North Sulawesi and North Maluku provinces, causing some to run out in panic to higher places, Kompas TV reported. Rahmat Triyono, a senior official at the agency, which put the earthquake's depth at 73km (45 miles), said the warning was specially issued for the eastern part of North Sulawesi province. "We issued the tsunami warning with an alert that any tsunami is estimated at only at a height of around 50 centimetres (20 inches)," he said. Kompas TV also reported that government officials in North Maluku prepared for a possible evacuation of residents. Some patients at a hospital in North Sulawesi's capital of Manado were evacuated from their rooms. There were no immediate reports of injury or damage, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300km (186 miles) of the epicentre. It reported no tsunami risk for more distant areas.
