Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:58 PM PST TOKYO: Hong Kong is a part of China "no matter what happens", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Monday, with the crisis-hit city's pro-democracy looking set for a crushing victory in community-level elections at the weekend. The results of Sunday's elections in the semi-autonomous city have sent the Beijing-backed government a clear message of public support for the demands of a protest movement that has gripped the territory for months. Counting was still under way following record turnout, but partial results indicated that candidates favouring greater democracy were on course to seize a shock majority of the normally establishment-dominated 18 district councils. ![]() Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (centre) speaks to journalists after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, Japan. - EPA "It's not the final result yet. Let's wait for the final result, OK? However, it is clear that no matter what happens, Hong Kong is a part of China and a special administrative region of China," Wang told reporters after he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. "Any attempt to mess up Hong Kong, or even damage its prosperity and stability, will not succeed." Hong Kong has been rocked by months of pro-democracy protests over concerns that Beijing is chipping away at the financial hub's special rights, which are unheard of in the mainland, including freedom of speech and an independent judiciary.--AFP Top stories - Google News November 24, 2019 at 08:15PM https://ift.tt/35xc9CE Hong Kong part of China 'no matter what happens' in elections: Chinese Foreign Minister - New Straits Times Top stories - Google News https://ift.tt/2FLTecc Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Ajit Pawar visits Fadnavis' house for late night meet - Deccan Herald Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:48 PM PST ![]() After remaining ensconced in his south Mumbai residence throughout Sunday, NCP leader and newly-anointed deputy CM Ajit Pawar met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis late night and held closed-door discussions. Earlier in the day, the supreme court issued notices to the Centre, Maharashtra government, Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar on a plea filed by the Congress-Shiv Sena-NCP combine seeking quashing of the governor's November 23 order inviting the BJP leader to form government. Senior BJP leaders Chandrakant Patil, Vinod Tawade and Girish Mahajan attended the meeting held at the official residence of the chief minister, the party sources said. The apex court directed the Centre to place before it on Monday morning the letters of the governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari inviting Fadnavis and of the BJP leader staking his claim to form the government in the state. A late night tweet from the CMO Maharashtra, however, said the CM and the Deputy CM discussed various measures for rain-hit farmers. "CM @Dev_Fadnavis and DCM @AjitPawarSpeaks today met and discussed on various measures for additional support & assistance to unseasonal rain affected farmers. Tomorrow it will be further discussed with the Chief Secretary & Finance Secretary". In a dramatic turn of events in Maharashtra, President's Rule was lifted on Saturday morning, following which Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were sworn in as chief minister and deputy chief minister, respectively, by the governor. The development came hours after the new alliance of Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress arrived at a consensus that Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will be their chief ministerial candidate. Last-gasp Caicedo goal gives Lazio fifth successive win - Reuters India Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:44 PM PST ![]() REGGIO EMILIA, Italy (Reuters) - Substitute Felipe Caicedo scored a stoppage-time goal as Lazio claimed a fifth successive Serie A win by beating lowly Sassuolo 2-1 away on Sunday. The Ecuadorean, who came on in the 79th minute, exchanged passes with Luis Alberto and held off a challenge from two defenders before turning to beat Andrea Consigli in the 91st minute of a rain-soaked match. The win kept Lazio third in Serie A with 27 points from 13 games, two ahead of neighbours AS Roma and eight behind leaders Juventus. Serie A's leading scorer Ciro Immobile grabbed his 15th league goal of the season to give Lazio the lead in the 34th minute when he ran on to a through ball and scored with a shot which deflected past Consigli. Francesco Caputo equalised for Sassuolo when he turned the ball in at the far post from a corner with the last kick of the first half. "Our first-half performance was excellent and we could have ended it a couple of goals in front," said Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi. "We didn't repeat it in the second half but we knew how to suffer together. We deserved the win." Bologna left it even later as Blerim Dzemaili scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to give them a 2-2 draw at home to Parma. Dejan Kulusevski put Parma ahead with a curling shot in the 17th minute and veteran Rodrigo Palacio headed Bologna level five minutes before halftime. Simone Iacoponi put eighth-placed Parma back in front with a breakaway goal in the 71st minute but Bologna grabbed a point at the death when Dzemaili volleyed home from a corner. Fiorentina's lacklustre season continued with a 1-0 defeat at Verona in a midtable clash as Samuel Di Carmine scored the winner in the 66th minute. The win lifted Verona above Fiorentina to ninth with 18 points. Sampdoria continued their gradual improvement under veteran coach Claudio Ranieri by coming from behind to beat Udinese 2-1. Ilija Nestorovski, who had a third-minute goal disallowed, gave Udinese the lead in the 29th minute after catching Andrea Bertolacci in possession. Manolo Gabbiadini equalised with a free kick in first-half stoppage time and Gaston Ramirez scored the winner from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Fabio Quagliarella after a VAR review. Sampdoria, who were bottom when Ranieri took over, climbed to 16th with 12 points. Fifth-placed Cagliari's match away to Lecce was postponed after torrential rain left the pitch unplayable. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:39 PM PST ![]() Russian winger Valeri Nichushkin can finally relax. The first-year Avalanche player will no longer worry about his goals drought reaching triple digits. Nichushkin scored his first goal in 92 games Saturday night to give the Avs a chance to beat visiting Toronto. His goal early in the third period cut Colorado's deficit to 4-3; the Avs were unable to produce the equalizer and lost 5-3 after the Leafs scored an empty-net goal with one second left. Nichushkin, 24, said his 91-game goals drought has been the "hardest time in my life." His previous goal was with the Dallas Stars on March 4, 2016. "Always tough for forwards to have no goals," he said. "I've had a lot of moments, lot of (opportunities), especially last 10 games. We lose couple of guys and I have more minutes, more chances to score. And it's like, every game is close — close, close, close — and some guys are 'What the (heck)' and say, 'You need to be more lucky.' Finally happened and I hope now I will score often." Nichushkin signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Avs on Aug. 19, a little less than two months after Dallas bought out the $5.9 million he was owed for this season ($2.7 million) and 2020-21 ($3.2 million). Last season, after a two-year stint with CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League, Nichushkin failed to produce a goal, or a penalty, for Dallas in 57 games. He has three points (two assists) and five penalty minutes in 19 games with the Avs. Nichushkin's ice time is bound to decrease in the coming weeks when Colorado gets injured forwards Mikko Rantanen (left ankle), Gabe Landeskog (right ankle), Colin Wilson (lower-body) and Matt Calvert (concussion) back. Reunion. Avs forward Nazem Kadri had two assists and four shots in his first game against the Maple Leafs, with whom he played his first nine NHL seasons. The Avs and Leafs meet again Dec. 4 in Toronto, in Kadri's second game against his former team. "It was odd, for sure. It was weird," Kadri said of his first game against the Leafs. "Had to check down on jersey to make sure I was playing for the right team a couple times. But it was fun." Footnotes. Rookie defenseman Cale Makar has logged career-highs in ice time the last two games. He played 24:41 and 27:45 against Minnesota and Toronto, respectively, and his ice time against the Leafs was the most for an NHL rookie this season. … Former Avs forward Alex Kerfoot of the Maple Leafs will have a hearing with the NHL Player Safety on Monday for his hit on Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson. Kerfoot was assessed a minor penalty for boarding, and Johnson may have been injured on the play. The Avs recalled defenseman Calle Rosen of the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League on Sunday. … Following Saturday's game, forward A.J. Greer was returned to the Eagles — presumably to get playing time. Greer had been with the Avs since Tuesday but has yet to play in the NHL this season. T-Mobile Data Breach: 1M+ Customers At Risk - pymnts.com Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:54 PM PST A recent data breach exposed the personal data of more than 1 million prepaid T-Mobile customers, reports said on Friday (Nov. 22). The information exposed did not include any financial information, social security numbers or password data. The cyber thief got users' names, billing addresses, phone numbers, account numbers and plan information. Data about rates and features are considered customer proprietary network information (CPNI). Under FCC rules, telecommunication firms are required to promptly notify users when there is a breach. In a disclosure to affected customers, T-mobile said there was a data breach affecting prepaid data customers. "Our cybersecurity team discovered and shut down malicious, unauthorized access to some information related to your T-Mobile prepaid wireless account. We promptly reported this to authorities. None of your financial data (including credit card information) or social security numbers were involved, and no passwords were compromised," said the disclosure. A T-Mobile representative told reporters that the incident affected "less than 1.5 percent" of its roughly 75 million users. The representative also stated that the attack was discovered in early November and shut down "immediately." The company did not reveal details about the database, length of exposure time or how it was fixed, reporters said. In August 2018, T-Mobile told customers in a blog post that a cyber-attack exposed the personal information of about 3 percent of its users. Just as in this latest breach, last year's hackers didn't steal financial information, social security numbers or passwords. According to recent research from Kaspersky Lab, the average cost of a data breach is on the rise worldwide. The company found that in 2018, breaches cost a company $1.23 million on average for enterprises. That is 24 percent higher than in 2017. In addition, North America is the most expensive location for an SMB to suffer a data breach compared to all seven regions in the study. SMBs in the U.S. and Canada have the highest recovery cost, at $149,000 on average. ![]() "Mobile" - Google News November 24, 2019 at 06:32PM https://ift.tt/2KLgXMX T-Mobile Data Breach: 1M+ Customers At Risk - pymnts.com "Mobile" - Google News https://ift.tt/2P9t7Cg Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:18 PM PST Boost for pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong as they head for victory after record turnout in elections after six months of violent street protests
Advertisement Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp was headed for a thumping victory in district council elections, local media reported on Monday, a vote widely seen as a referendum on the Beijing-backed government's handling of months of violent political unrest. Counting was still under way following record turnout in Sunday's elections, but results so far indicated that candidates favouring calls for greater democracy were on course to seize a shock majority of the 452 seats contested, media reports said. District councils - which handle community-level concerns such as bus routes and garbage collection - have long been dominated by the pro-Beijing establishment. The pro-democracy camp hopes weakening that grip would send a message to China and Hong Kong's unpopular leader Carrie Lam. Hong Kong has endured months of mass rallies and violent clashes pitting police against protesters who are mobilised by fears that Beijing is whittling away at the semi-autonomous territory's freedoms, which are unique for China. Scroll down for video. ![]() People line up at a polling station to vote in the Hong Kong District Council elections today. The first results should start trickling in before midnight ![]() Government data showed more than 1.9 million people had voted by 3.30 pm, meaning a turnout rate of 47%. Pictured: people look at their mobile phones as they queue up ![]() Riot police stand outside of a polling place in Hong Kong today. A record 1,104 candidates were vying for 452 seats in the elections Their demands include direct popular elections and a probe into alleged police brutality against demonstrators. 'The voice of the public is loud and clear... We hope the government can heed the protesters' demands,' Roy Kwong, a member of Hong Kong's legislature who won a district council seat for the Democratic Party, was quoted as saying by the South China Morning Post. Results from 241 races tabulated early Monday by the newspaper showed 201 pro-democracy candidates winning their races as opposed to just 28 pro-Beijing establishment candidates and 12 independents. Analysts had expected pro-democracy candidates to achieve only minimal gains in the councils. A record 71 percent of the 4.13 million citizens who registered to vote had cast their ballots, according to Hong Kong's election watchdog, far higher than the then-record 47 percent who voted in 2015 council elections. The largely leaderless protest movement started with giant rallies in June against a bill backed by Lam that would have allowed extraditions to China's opaque justice system. ![]() People line up to vote in district council elections in South Horizons in Hong Kong. Many have said the voter numbers showed people's determination ![]() The voting numbers have surpassed the 1.47 million who had voted in the last district elections which happened four years ago The bill was eventually declared 'dead' as public pressure grew, but the anger it unleashed sparked wider calls for democracy, which Lam's government has resisted. China has said the unrest is being fomented by violent foreign-backed criminals. Long queues snaked out of polling stations across the territory of around 7.5 million on Sunday. 'Even though one ballot can only help a little, I still hope it can bring change to society and support street protests in some way,' 19-year-old student Michael Ng, voting for the first time said. The vote is the closest Hong Kongers get to direct representation. The territory's legislature is elected by a mix of popular vote and industry groups stacked with China loyalists, which ensures Beijing's control. But some candidates for next year's legislative elections will be drawn from district councils, and the bodies also will contribute 117 members to the 1,200-strong Beijing-controlled electoral college that chooses the chief executive. Protests died down in the poll run-up after pro-democracy figures urged calm to avoid triggering any delay or suspension of the polls. No major disturbances were reported during voting. Chinese state media ran editorials on Sunday urging Hong Kongers 'to vote to end violence'. ![]() A riot policeman stands as voters line up outside of a polling place in Hong Kong. The elections have become a barometer of public support for anti-government protests now in their sixth month ![]() Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam speaks to the press after casting her vote during the district council elections in Hong Kong today Campaigning was marred by acrimony, with one pro-democracy candidate having his ear bitten off in an attack, while 17 other candidates of all stripes were arrested over protest-related activities. Election authorities also banned leading democracy activist Joshua Wong from running, over his support for Hong Kong 'self-determination'. Government data showed more than 1.9 million people had voted by 3.30 pm, meaning a turnout rate of 47 percent, with seven hours left until polling stations close. This surpasses the 1.47 million who voted in the last district elections four years ago. Police presence was thin. The first results should start trickling in before midnight. Ming Lee, 26, who works in event production, said she hoped the higher turnout would benefit the pro-democracy camp that is battling some seats that were once uncontested and dominated by pro-Beijing candidates. 'I hope this vote can counter the voice of the pro-establishment, so as to bring in more voices from the democrats,' she said. 'The social problems encouraged people to vote and to focus on political issues.' The voter numbers showed people's determination, said Tsz, 30, who works in the service industry. ![]() A record 1,104 candidates were vying for 452 seats and a record 4.1 million people have enrolled to vote for district councillors who control some spending and decide issues such as recycling and public health ![]() Ming Lee, 26, who works in event production, said she hoped the higher turnout would benefit the pro-democracy camp that is battling some seats that were once uncontested and dominated by pro-Beijing candidates 'The high turnout rate definitely reflects Hong Kong people's hope for genuine universal suffrage,' he said. Jimmy Sham, a candidate for the Civil Human Rights Front, which organised some of the mass anti-government rallies of recent months, was beaten by men with hammers in October. 'We can see Hongkongers are longing for a chance to express their stand,' he said. 'We don't know yet, at the end of the day, if the democrats can win a majority. But I hope our Hong Kong citizens can vote for the future of Hong Kong.' Police were seen outside some polling stations and on the streets but correspondents said they kept a low profile. Beijing-backed Lam cast her ballot in front of television cameras and pledged that her government, widely seen as out of touch, would listen 'more intensively' to the views of district councils. 'I hope this kind of stability and calm is not only for today's election, but to show that everyone does not want Hong Kong to fall into a chaotic situation again,' Lam said. ![]() If the pro-democracy campaigners gain control, they could secure six seats on Hong Kong's Legislative Council, or parliament, and 117 seats on the 1,200-member panel that selects its chief executive ![]() The voter numbers showed people's determination, said Tsz, 30, who works in the service industry. Pictured: voters queue up to make their choice The anti-China protests have at times forced the closure of government, businesses and schools in the city's worst political crisis in decades, as police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon in response to petrol bombs, rocks and occasionally bows and arrows. A record 1,104 candidates were vying for 452 seats and a record 4.1 million people have enrolled to vote for district councillors who control some spending and decide issues such as recycling and public health. If the pro-democracy campaigners gain control, they could secure six seats on Hong Kong's Legislative Council, or parliament, and 117 seats on the 1,200-member panel that selects its chief executive. Restaurant manager Jeremy Chan saw the elections in the Asian financial hub as offering Beijing supporters a chance to share their opinions. ![]() People queue to cast their vote during the district council elections in South Horizons in Hong Kong today ![]() Long queues formed on Sunday amid fears polls might be closed by authorities if violence disrupted the election ![]() In the run-up to the election, pro-democracy protest groups had urged people not to cause disruption but no trouble has been reported so far 'They believe they are fighting for democracy, fighting for Hong Kong, but the rioters only listen to what they want to hear,' said the 55-year-old, citing vandalism of businesses seen as pro-Beijing. 'Freedom of speech is lost.' The protests started over a now-withdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial but rapidly evolved into calls for full democracy, posing the biggest popular challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012. Sunday was the seventh day of a stand-off at Polytechnic University, its campus surrounded by police as some protesters hid out on the sprawling grounds. 'The district council election is almost like a referendum on recent months of social activity,' said a protester clad in a red university tracksuit, his face covered by a red mask, unable to escape without being caught. 'My personal liberty to vote has been violated,' he added. Demonstrators are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. They say they are also responding to perceived police brutality. China denies interfering and says it is committed to the 'one country, two systems' formula for the autonomy of Hong Kong. Police say they have shown restraint in the face of potentially deadly attacks. Pentagon fires Navy Secretary Richard Spencer after controversy over Navy SEAL case - CNBC Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:33 PM PST ![]() U.S. Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer testifies during a hearing before Senate Armed Services Committee September 19, 2017 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Alex Wong | Getty Images News | Getty Images Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has asked for the resignation of Navy Secretary Richard Spencer amid controversy over the handling of a case involving a Navy SEAL convicted of illegally posing for pictures with the corpse of an ISIS fighter. Spencer had reportedly threatened to quit his post after President Donald Trump intervened in the case of Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher. Trump said on Twitter Thursday he would not allow the Navy to strip Gallagher of the Trident pin denoting his membership in the elite SEAL group. Spencer responded by telling the White House that a Twitter post is not an official order and Trump would have to order the end of the disciplinary proceeding in writing. The Navy Secretary had denied over the weekend that he had threatened to resign. In his letter of resignation, Spencer said the rule of law is what sets the United States apart from its adversaries and he could not in good conscience obey an order that would violate the oath he took to support and defend the Constitution. Spencer said it had become clear that he and Trump no longer share the same understanding of the key principles of good order and discipline. "The President deserves and should expect a Secretary of the Navy who is aligned with his vision for the future and our force generation and sustainment," Spencer said. Trump said in a Twitter post Sunday that Spencer was fired over the way the Navy handled Gallagher's case as well as cost overruns that were not addressed to his satisfaction. Ken Braithwaite, admiral and ambassador to Norway, will be nominated to replace Spencer, Trump said. Dispute over SEAL caseGallagher, 40, was demoted in rank and pay grade after being convicted by a military jury in July of illegally posing for pictures with the corpse of an ISIS fighter. He was acquitted of premeditated murder for allegedly killing a wounded captive during his 2017 deployment to Iraq. Earlier this month, Trump ordered that the Navy restore Gallagher's status. Last week, Spencer said that Gallagher's membership in the SEAL community should be decided by a board of his peers. The Pentagon said in a statement that Defense Secretary Esper had lost trust and confidence in Spencer over "his lack of candor" over conversations with the White House regarding Gallagher's case. The Pentagon accused Spencer of privately proposing to the White House that Gallagher's rank be restored and allow him to retire with his Trident pin, contrary to the Navy Secretary's public position. Spencer never informed Esper of his private proposal, according to the Pentagon. Esper has directed that Gallagher retain his Trident pin and will meet with Navy Under Secretary Thomas Modley, who will now serve as acting Navy Secretary, and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Gilday on Monday to discuss the way forward. Hong Kong democrats cheer landslide victory in local elections amid political crisis - Reuters Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:28 PM PST HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong's democrats romped to a landslide and symbolic majority in district council elections after residents turned out in record numbers on Sunday to vote following six months of anti-government protests in the embattled city. Winning candidate Kelvin Lam and activist Joshua Wong greet people and thank them for their support, outside of South Horizons Station, in Hong Kong, China, November 25, 2019, the morning after Lam won in district council elections. REUTERS/Leah Millis In a rare weekend lull in the unrest that has rocked the financial hub, democratic candidates across the city of 7.4 million people secured more than half of the 452 district council seats for the first time against a strongly resourced and mobilized pro-establishment opposition. When the results began trickling in after midnight, including upset wins for democrats against heavyweight pro-Beijing opponents, some voting centers erupted in loud cheers and chants of "Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution Now" - a slogan used by many protesters on the streets over the past six months. Some winning candidates said the result was akin to a vote of support for the demonstrators and could raise the heat on Hong Kong's pro-Beijing chief executive, Carrie Lam, amid the city's worst political crisis in decades. "This is the power of democracy. This is a democratic tsunami," said Tommy Cheung, a former student protest leader who won a seat in the Yuen Long district close to China's border. The voting ended with no major disruptions in a day that saw massive, though orderly, queues form outside voting centers. Pro-democracy candidates had secured a clear majority by 8.00 a.m. (midnight GMT Sunday) with 333 of 452 seats, compared with 52 for the pro-establishment camp, according to media estimates. Democrats only secured around 100 seats at the previous polls four years ago. Almost three million people voted, a record turnout of more than 71% that appeared to have been spurred by the turmoil, almost double the number last time. Hong Kong's district councils control some spending and decide a range of livelihood issues such as transport. They also serve as an important grassroots platform to radiate political influence in the China-ruled city. "PATH OF STRUGGLE""I believe this result is because there are a lot of voters who hope to use this election and their vote to show their support for the (protest) movement, and their five demands, and their dissatisfaction with the Hong Kong government," said former student leader Lester Shum, who won a seat. The protesters' demands include full democracy, as well as an independent inquiry into perceived police brutality. "The district council is just one very important path of struggle. In future, we must find other paths of struggle to keep fighting," Shum said. The state-run China Daily newspaper said in an editorial on Monday the election "will hopefully have served as an opportunity to return the city to normal". "The relative tranquility the city enjoyed since several days before the election suggests all stakeholders regarded it as an opportunity to air their views." Demonstrators are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. They say they are also responding to perceived police brutality. China denies interfering and says it is committed to the "one country, two systems" formula for the autonomy of Hong Kong put in place in 1997. Police say they have shown restraint in the face of potentially deadly attacks. Jimmy Sham, a leader of the Civil Human Rights Front, which organized some of the anti-government rallies, won his electoral contest, as did Kelvin Lam, who stood in after prominent activist Joshua Wong was barred from running. A number of pro-Beijing heavyweights including Junius Ho, whose abrasive public comments have made him a hate-figure among many protesters, lost to pro-democracy challengers. He described it on Facebook as "an exceptional election, and an unusual result". The protests started over a now-withdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial but rapidly evolved into calls for full democracy, posing the biggest populist challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012. Initial results from the voting, which ended with no major disruptions in a day that saw massive queues form outside many voting centres, began to trickle in after midnight. Many people had clamoured to vote early, fearful that possible disruptions would lead to voting centres closing early. Electoral affairs chief Barnabus Fung said at least 2.94 million people voted, a record turnout of more than 71 per cent that appeared to have been spurred by the turmoil. About 1.47 million voted in the last district elections four years ago. "The performance of the pro-democracy camp will send a signal to Beijing," said Mr Andrew Li, a 22-year-old student who supported a pro-democracy candidate. "By ignoring people's demands, it wakes up all Hong Kong people to come out and vote." The state-run China Daily newspaper said in an editorial on Monday the election "will hopefully have served as an opportunity to return the city to normal". FORMAL CONFRONTATIONDemonstrators are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. They say they are also responding to perceived police brutality. China denies interfering and says it is committed to the "one country, two systems" formula for the autonomy of Hong Kong. Police say they have shown restraint in the face of potentially deadly attacks. Mr Jimmy Sham, a candidate for the Civil Human Rights Front, which organised some of the anti-government rallies, won his electoral contest and said the turnout should be a sign to the government that it should listen to their voices. "This election is special because it is a formal confrontation between pro-establishment and pro-democracy parties after months of unrest caused by the misstep of government," he said, standing on crutches weeks after he was beaten by men with hammers during a rally in October. "It is a victory for the people of Hong Kong." Other successful pro-democracy candidates included Mr Lester Shum, a former student leader of the umbrella movement in 2014, and Mr Kelvin Lam, who stood in after activist Joshua Wong was barred from running. ![]() A number of pro-Beijing heavyweights including Mr Junius Ho, an incumbent injured in a knife attack this month, lost to a pro-democracy challenger. In a message on his Facebook page, Mr Ho said it had been an "exceptional year, an exceptional election, and an unusual result". Some veteran pro-Beijing politicians, who have been shoo-ins in previous polls, attributed their losses to the broader discontent. "Our loss is not because of our work in the local districts, it's because of the political sentiment," said Mr Horace Cheung, who noted he received 500 more votes this year than four years ago, but still lost. CAMPUS STANDOFFCasting her ballot, Hong Kong's chief executive Lam, who is backed by Beijing, pledged that her government would listen more intensively to the views of district councils. "I hope this kind of stability and calm is not only for today's election, but to show that everyone does not want Hong Kong to fall into a chaotic situation again," Mrs Lam said. ![]() The protests started over a now-withdrawn extradition Bill that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial but rapidly evolved into calls for full democracy, posing the biggest popular challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012. The protests have at times forced the closure of government, businesses and schools as police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon in response to petrol bombs and rocks. The run-up to the election was marked by attacks on candidates, with Mr Ho stabbed and wounded, and another having part of his ear bitten off. Sunday was also the seventh day of a stand-off at Polytechnic University, whose campus has been surrounded by police as some protesters hide out on the grounds. "The government needs to know that if they don't answer our demands, we will continue demanding and the protests will not stop," said a 26-year-old pro-democracy voter who gave her name as Cda. Navy Secretary Spencer denies reports he’ll resign over Trump’s SEAL meddling - Vox.com Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:48 PM PST ![]() HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — A fight between President Donald Trump and the Navy has spilled out into the open over a controversial case involving the Navy SEALs — and it may lead to a top Pentagon official resigning in protest. Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher was accused of murdering an ISIS captive, shooting civilians, and threatening those in his charge who gave their superiors information on him during his time in Iraq. He was acquitted by military jury of those charges in July, but the Navy still demoted him after he was found guilty of posing in a photo next to the dead body of the teenage detainee. Trump has taken a keen interest in Gallagher's case. Last week, he signed an order directing to restore the commando's previous rank. Then on Thursday, the president tweeted that the Navy should stop a review into whether or not to boot Gallagher out of the elite unit, which would lead to the his loss of the coveted gold Trident pin.
But the Navy is defying Trump's pressure. Multiple reports indicate the military service may still punish Gallagher and taking his pin away. Navy Secretary Richard Spencer, the military department's highest-ranking civilian official, and Rear Adm. Collin Green, the unit's commander, have both reportedly threatened to resign should Trump intervene in the case. That on its own would encompass one the greatest military rebukes of Trump during his presidency. But Spencer denied the reports during a speaking engagement at the Halifax International Security Forum in Canada. "I'm still here," he said during a panel on Arctic security. "I did not threaten to resign." During the session, Spencer's Twitter account released his full denial statement (which means someone on his staff surely sent the message).
And in a press conference with reporters right afterward, the secretary offered his strongest denial of the stories. "I have not threatened to resign," he said. "The president of the United States is the commander in chief," Spencer said, but he added that he needed "a formal order" — not a tweet — to stop the Gallagher disciplinary review. "If the president requests to the stop the process, the process stops. Good order and discipline is also obeying orders from the president of the United States," Spencer continued. Some still say that Trump and Spencer are at odds, especially since the secretary still isn't acting on the president's clear desire for the Gallagher review to end. Just one day earlier, Spencer told Reuters he believed the Gallagher review should proceed unimpeded. "I believe the process matters for good order and discipline," he said. Most military experts are appalled by what Trump has forced his top military and defense officials to do with respect to Gallagher. "The president has placed military leadership in a difficult position," Bishop Garrison, who served two tours in Iraq in the US Army, told me, adding that the military justice system and the chain of command are in place for a reason, and are to be followed. "If there are egregious violations of the trust we have bestowed to that system, then it is appropriate for Congress to step in in its oversight authority and for the executive to? work with them in a transparent manner," continued Garrison, who is now at the Human Rights First advocacy group. "This situation has not been that in the least." The Trump-Navy standoff could lead to a drawn out conflict between the president and the military over the coming days and weeks, coming at a time when Trump can ill-afford more problems with his own administration amid impeachment considerations. Yet Trump believes American troops accused of war crimes deserve the benefit of the doubt for fighting in the heat of battle, saying in May, "We teach them how to be great fighters, and then when they fight sometimes they get really treated very unfairly." Ironically, that stance has now placed him in a battle with his own military. Asia stocks trade higher; Hong Kong democrats surge to election victory - CNBC Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:38 PM PST ![]() Shares in Asia traded higher Monday morning, as investors await market reaction to Hong Kong's district council elections amid months of civil unrest in the city. The Nikkei 225 in Japan rose 0.79% in early trade, with shares of index heavyweights Fast Retailing, Softbank Group and Fanuc all seeing gains. South Korea's Kospi also gained 0.93% as shares of industry heavyweight Samsung Electronics and chipmaker SK Hynix both gained more than 1% each. Meanwhile, stocks in Australia edged higher in morning trade, as the S&P/ASX 200 gained about 0.6%. Shares of Westpac, however, slipped around 1%. The embattled lender announced its response plan over the weekend after Australia's anti money-laundering and terrorism financing regulator last week filed for civil penalty orders against the firm, alleging its "oversight of the banking and designated services provided through its corresponding banking relationships was deficient." Among the list of actions detailed in the response plan were the immediate closure of an international funds transfer system and bolstering its financial crime monitoring efforts. Overall, the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index traded 0.27% higher. Investors will watch for market reaction to district council elections in Hong Kong, after pro-democracy candidates surged to a landslide victory following a record voter turnout, Reuters reported. That comes following months of civil unrest that have rocked the city and periodically degenerated into violence. On the U.S.-China trade front, a "phase two" trade deal between the two economic powerhouses is unlikely to come soon, Reuters reported Monday citing officials, law makers and trade experts. That comes as Washington and Beijing have yet to strike a "phase one" agreement ahead of Dec. 15, when additional tariffs on Chinese exports to the U.S. are set to kick in. The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was at 98.273 after rising from levels below 98.0 on Friday. The Japanese yen traded at 108.71 against the dollar after seeing lows beyond 108.9 last week. The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.6793 after declining from highs above $0.682 in the previous trading week. Hong Kong pro-democracy camp set to win local elections - Nikkei Asian Review Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:28 PM PST ![]() HONG KONG -- Pro-democracy candidates won a majority of the seats in Hong Kong's District Council elections on Sunday, breaking the pro-Beijing camp's grip on local governance in the former British colony. Some of the highest-profile candidates in the pro-establishment camp, including Legislative Council members and longtime district councilors, lost to challengers from the opposition on high turnout by younger voters -- a demographic tending toward greater sympathy for the pro-democracy movement. Opposition candidates had claimed more than half of the 452 elected seats in the city's 18 districts as of 6 a.m. Local media estimate their seat total is likely to reach over 300 when all is said and done. Before the election, the pan-democrats held 118 seats, against 327 for the pro-Beijing camp and seven independents. Full results will be announced early Monday morning. A record number of voters made their picks in Hong Kong's first elections since anti-government protests began in earnest this June. Ballots were cast by 2.94 million people, or 71.2% of registered voters. District Council elections are held every four years. The early results show that young activists, closely involved in the anti-government protests, are gaining more support from the public. Jimmy Sham -- convener at the Civil Human Rights Front, which organized protests by millions against the criminal extradition bill -- and former Umbrella Movement student leaders Tommy Cheung and Lester Shum all successfully beat pro-Beijing candidates. "The social atmosphere has made this election a de facto referendum," Sham told public broadcaster RTHK. "It's a victory for Hong Kong people." He urged Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam to respond to the protesters' five demands, including genuine universal suffrage to pick the chief executive. Former HSBC economist Kelvin Lam, who ran after activist Joshua Wong was barred from becoming a candidate, beat pro-Beijing incumbent Judy Chan in Wong's district. The city's largest pro-Beijing party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, suffered a big loss. More than 80% of its candidates failed to win. Even two of its vice chairmen, Horace Cheung and Holden Chow, went down in defeat. Controversial politician Junius Ho, accused of triad ties, was unseated by Democratic Party hopeful Cary Lo Chun-yu. The results were "strange," Ho said, as he drew more votes than four years ago. The results show that the protests maintain strong public support despite the recent rise in violence. Having a majority will give pro-democracy parties a bigger say in choosing the city's next chief executive and could help them win more seats in the city's legislature. District councilors account for 117 seats on the 1,200-member election committee for the city's leader. The pro-democracy camp's majority means that it will claim all 117. Five of the 70 seats in the city's closely divided legislature are also reserved for district councilors. The unrest had cast some doubt on whether Sunday's election would even be held. Hard-liners have vandalized transportation facilities as well as Beijing-friendly stores, and protesters and police have clashed almost daily. Optus mobile plan shake up forgoes 5G charges - ZDNet Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:35 PM PST ![]() Optus is finally shaking up its mobile plan structure, simplifying from what was the most complex plans of Australia's top telcos. Customers will now have the option of creating their own plans, or selecting from four pre-made plans from the telco. The smallest pre-made plan is 10GB for AU$40 a month, followed by 60GB for AU$50, 100GB for AU$60, and 120GB at AU$80 a month. The 100GB and 120GB plans have a monthly international data allocation in "zone 1" nations, which is most of the world besides South America and Africa. For customised plans, a 150GB per month plan with all the inclusions tops out at AU$91 a month, and at the lowest end, customers can get 10GB for AU$40 a month. Excess data across all plans is charged at AU$10 per gigabyte, and all plans include unlimited standard national calls and texts. Like its competitors, the plans have moved to a monthly basis, meaning the end of lock-in contracts for the plan alone. Device repayment plans still exist, with Optus saying it now allows repayment of a device interest-free for 12, 24, or 36 months. While Telstra said in May it would charge users AU$15 a month for 5G data after a year without charge, Optus said it would double data for the first year when users are repaying a 5G device. Optus plans also have the ability to use a data pool across multiple users. The telco is also throwing in access to Optus Sport, and a one-year Apple Music subscription. Much like its concierge service for NBN customers, Optus is also introducing Optus One, which gives customers "their own dedicated 24/7 Optus One expert, with a unique number to call or SMS anytime so they are personally taken care of", the telco said. For AU$120 a month, Optus One includes 500GB of data, 10GB each month for roaming, and users will have network priority and exclusive Optus Sport content. "A key group of customers have told us that they are looking for an exceptional experience with their mobile provider so understanding that need, we have created Optus One," Optus managing director of marketing and revenue Matt Williams said. "A plan for a multitude of consumers in the Australian market that travel extensively, are time poor and want a one-to-one customer service experience." Earlier in the month, Optus made its 5G fixed wireless service generally available to the 138,000 homes in its 5G footprint. The Optus 5G Home service kicked off at the start of the year, with customers paying AU$70 per month for unlimited data at a 50Mbps minimum speed guarantee. "The reality today in Australia, is that there are large numbers of homes that want faster broadband, despite the National Broadband Network," Optus CEO Allen Lew said at the time. The telco is expected to shift to standalone 5G in 2021, and expects to have 1,200 5G sites by March 2020. Related CoverageOptus booted from ACMA complaints report and told to get external audit ACMA has clamped down on Optus' record keeping, excluding it from the latest Telecommunications complaints handling report. Optus makes 5G Home fixed wireless generally available Users on NBN-alternative network to gain access to 4K streaming beginning with 2020 football championships and leagues. Optus opens privacy can of worms with programmable voice play Bringing an assistant into the phone calls of customers to help with a restaurant booking is an idea fraught with privacy concerns. Early lead for HK pro-democracy candidates - 7NEWS.com.au Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:18 PM PST ![]() Pro-democracy candidates in Hong Kong have romped to a landslide and symbolic majority in district council elections after residents turned out in record numbers to vote following six months of anti-government protests in the embattled city. In a rare weekend lull in the unrest that has embroiled the financial hub, democratic candidates across the city of 7.4 million secured more than half the 452 district council seats for the first time against a strongly resourced and mobilised pro-establishment opposition. Hong Kong's district councils control some spending and decide a range of local livelihood issues such as transport and they also serve as an important grassroots platform to radiate political influence in the city ruled by communist China. Some winning candidates said the result was akin to a vote of support for the protest movement and could raise the pressure on Hong Kong's pro-Beijing chief executive, Carrie Lam, amid the city's worst political crisis in decades. "This is the power of democracy. This is a democratic tsunami," said Tommy Cheung, a former student protest leader who won a seat in the Yuen Long district close to China's border. Initial results from the voting, which ended with no major disruptions, began to trickle in after midnight on Sunday. As of 5am (8am AEDT), pro-democracy candidates had secured a majority with at least 283 seats compared with about 32 seats for the pro-establishment camp, according to local media estimates. A record 1104 candidates were vying for 452 seats. Electoral affairs chief Barnabus Fung said at least 2.94 million people voted, a record turnout of more than 71 per cent that appeared to have been spurred by the turmoil. Demonstrators are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. They say they are also responding to perceived police brutality. China denies interfering and says it is committed to the "one country, two systems" formula for the autonomy of Hong Kong. Police say they have shown restraint in the face of potentially deadly attacks. Jimmy Sham, a candidate for the Civil Human Rights Front, which organised some of the anti-government rallies, won his electoral contest and said the turnout should be a sign to the government that it should listen to their voices. "This election is special because it is a formal confrontation between pro-establishment and pro-democracy parties after months of unrest caused by the misstep of government," he said, standing on crutches weeks after he was beaten during a rally in October. "It is a victory for the people of Hong Kong." Other successful pro-democracy candidates included Lester Shum, a former student leader of the umbrella movement in 2014, and Kelvin Lam, who stood in after activist Joshua Wong was barred from running. A number of pro-Beijing heavyweights including Junius Ho, an incumbent injured in a knife attack earlier in November, lost to a pro-democracy challenger. Casting her ballot, Hong Kong's chief executive Lam, who is backed by Beijing, pledged her government would listen more intensively to the views of district councils. "I hope this kind of stability and calm is not only for today's election but to show that everyone does not want Hong Kong to fall into a chaotic situation again," Lam said. The protests started over a now-withdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial but rapidly evolved into calls for full democracy. Sunday was also the seventh day of a standoff at Polytechnic University, whose campus has been surrounded by police as some protesters hid out on the grounds. Hong Kong democrats cheer landslide victory in local elections amid political crisis - CNBC Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:08 PM PST ![]() Local residents celebrate as Junius Ho Kwan-yiu loses in District Council Elections, outside a polling station on November 25, 2019 in Hong Kong. Billy H.C. Kwok | Getty Images News | Getty Images Hong Kong's democrats romped to a landslide and symbolic majority in district council elections after residents turned out in record numbers on Sunday to vote following six months of anti-government protests in the embattled city. In a rare weekend lull in the unrest that has roiled the financial hub, democratic candidates across the city of 7.4 million secured more than half of the 452 district council seats for the first time, against a strongly resourced and mobilized pro-establishment opposition. When the results began trickling in after midnight, including upset wins for democrats against heavyweight pro-Beijing opponents, some voting centers erupted in loud cheers and chants of "Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution Now," — a slogan of many protesters on the streets over the past half year. Some winning candidates said the result was akin to a vote of support for the demonstrators, and could raise the heat on Hong Kong's pro-Beijing chief executive, Carrie Lam, amid the city's worst political crisis in decades. "This is the power of democracy. This is a democratic tsunami," said Tommy Cheung, a former student protest leader who won a seat in the Yuen Long district close to China's border. The voting ended with no major disruptions in a day that saw massive, though orderly queues form outside voting centers. As of 6:00 a.m. (2200 GMT), pro-democracy candidates had secured a clear majority with more than 300 of 452 seats, compared to 41 seats for the pro-establishment camp, according to local media estimates. Four years ago at the previous such polls, democrats only secured around 100 seats. Almost three million people voted, a record turnout of more than 71% that appeared to have been spurred by the turmoil, almost double the number last time. Hong Kong's district councils control some spending and decide a range of local livelihood issues such as transport. They also serve as an important grassroots platform to radiate political influence in the China-ruled city. Jimmy Sham, a leader of the Civil Human Rights Front, which organized some of the anti-government rallies, won his electoral contest, as did Lester Shum, a former student leader of the umbrella movement in 2014, and Kelvin Lam, who stood in after activist Joshua Wong was barred from running. A number of pro-Beijing heavyweights including Junius Ho, whose abrasive public comments have made him a hate-figure amongst many protesters, lost to pro-democracy challengers. He described it as "an exceptional election, and an unusual result" on Facebook. The protests started over a now-withdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial but rapidly evolved into calls for full democracy, posing the biggest populist challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012.
