A Save, a Goal, and a Win - Washington Captials Web Site

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 09:26 PM PST

Playing on the road is supposed to be difficult in the NHL, as is digging out of a two-goal hole. But the Caps have made both of those tasks seem much easier than they are in actuality early this season.

Braden Holtby's left pad save on Aaron Ekblad and Tom Wilson's overtime goal seconds later on the subsequent odd-man break enabled the Caps to come back from a 3-1 deficit for a 5-4 overtime win over the Panthers in Florida on Thursday night.

Video: Wilson scores twice, including game-winner in OT

Early in overtime, Ekblad broke in all alone on Holtby and tried to deke him, but the Caps goalie didn't bite on the move, thrusting his left pad out in denial. Kuznetsov quickly collected the puck and sent Carlson up the left side of the ice on a 2-on-1 with Wilson riding shotgun. Just after getting to the top of the circle, Carlson hit Wilson in stride, and the big winger put some air under his shot, getting it over Bobrovsky to send the Caps home with two points, just 17 seconds into the extra session.

"I was a little bit in awe for a second on the save that was made at our end," recounts Wilson. "Then I realized I had to get skating for the 2-on-1. John made a good play, and I Was lucky to capitalize on it."

Washington is now 8-1-1 in its 10 road games this season, and it has rebounded from a multi-goal deficit in a third of its dozen victories this season.

"We get off to a great start, and then we kind of let them back into the game with some errors," says Caps coach Todd Reirden. "But we stuck with it. I didn't like our first, but we got better as the game went on, and were obviously able to convert on our opportunities.

"It was obviously a crazy few seconds of overtime, from a phenomenal save by Holtby into a great goal by Tom Wilson."

The Caps grabbed an early lead, scoring in the game's first half-minute. T.J. Oshie won a right dot draw in Florida ice, and eight seconds and a couple of passes later, John Carlson had his eighth goal of the season. Carlson redirected Michal Kempny's slap pass from the left point past Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky for a 1-0 Washington lead just 25 seconds after the opening face-off.

Florida bounced back quickly, scoring on its first shot of the game before the game was two minutes old. When Caps defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler blew a tired just inside the Washington line, it left Frank Vatrano with a semi-breakaway, and he beat Holtby to tie the game at 1-1 at 1:55 of the first.

Washington wasn't able to do anything with an early power play, and the Panthers took control of the play soon after completing that kill. The Caps went more than 11 and a half minutes without a shot on net in the middle of the first, and in the meantime, old friend Brett Connolly bit the hand that once fed him, giving the Panthers their first lead of the game.

With Connolly parked at the top of the paint, Anton Stralman let go of a low, hard drive from the right point. Connolly got a piece of it, tipping it past Holtby for a 2-1 Florida lead at 14:26 of the first.

Florida wasted little time in adding to its lead in the second period. The Caps left Sasha Barkov unattended in the high slot, and Evgenii Dadonov found him with a perfect feed. Barkov's one-timer made it a 3-1 game just 27 seconds into the second.

Radko Gudas drew a slashing call on Florida's Brian Boyle, giving the Caps a second power play opportunity ahead of the first television timeout in the second, and this time Washington used a familiar formula to pull within a goal of the Cats. From the right circle, Evgeny Kuznetsov sold the idea of a shot to Bobrovsky, then put a perfect cross-ice feed on Alex Ovechkin's tape. The Caps' captain had an easy power-play goal from the office, a virtual empty-netter to make it a 3-2 game at 6:13.

Video: WSH@FLA: Kuznetsov sets up Ovechkin for PPG

Washington has rallied from a number of two-goal deficits this season, and the Caps knotted the score of this one just after the midpoint of the middle frame. For the second time in three goals, the Caps scored seconds after winning an offensive zone draw. This time, it was Nicklas Backstrom winning the puck to Dmitry Orlov, who put it on Ovechkin's stick. From high in the Florida zone, Ovechkin's shot found purchase behind Bobrovsky to make it a 3-3 at 12:14.

Video: WSH@FLA: Ovechkin scores with fortunate deflection

The Caps got into some penalty soup twice in the second period, and Florida had brief two-man advantages each time. Washington was able to skirt danger on the first pair of penalties, but the Cats regained the lead with a power-play goal late in the second when Jonathan Huberdeau made a precision pass to Dadonov, who whipped home a one-timer from in tight with 1:01 left in the second.

Washington's resilience came to the fore early in the third. Kuznetsov won a draw in Florida ice, and from the left half wall he issued a pass toward Wilson in the slot. Wilson chipped the pass over Bobrovsky's right shoulder to tie the game again, at 4-4, just 44 seconds into the third period.

Each team weathered a penalty killing mission in the third, and both goaltenders made some big stops to keep the score even, setting the stage for Holtby and Wilson's tag team heroics in overtime.

"I stopped for a second," says Wilson, "and there wasn't going to be much I was going to be able to do. Holts made an amazing save, and then I realized I had to get going the other way; we had a chance with an odd-man rush. That's the way 3-on-3 works, a guy comes up big for you, and then you can try and capitalize at the other end."

China's exports and imports fell less than expected in October - CNBC

China's exports and imports declined in October, Reuters reported citing data from the country's customs.

In dollar terms, exports fell 0.9% while imports fell 6.4% from a year ago in October, but beat analysts' forecasts.

Trade balance for October was $42.81 billion, compared to analyst forecasts of $40.83 billion.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected October exports to fall 3.9% and imports to fall 8.9% from a year earlier.

China's imports and exports fell more than expected with exports falling 3.2% in September from a year ago, while imports dropped 8.5% during the same period.

The Chinese economy — the second largest in the world — is growing at a slower pace amid the protracted trade battle between Beijing and Washington.

On Thursday, China's Commerce Ministry said that Beijing had agreed with Washington to lift existing trade tariffs between the two nations in phases.

Market participants had expected the two economic giants to sign a deal later this month, after both Washington and Beijing spoke of progress in talks late last week.

However, Reuters reported on Wednesday that a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could be postponed until December — delaying a chance for the two leaders to sign an interim trade deal.

The world's two largest economies have imposed tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of one another's goods since the start of 2018, battering financial markets and souring business and consumer sentiment.

AT&T calls T-Mobile's first responder and education pledges 'marketing stunts' - CNET

T-Mobile took some shots at AT&T and Verizon on Thursday during its "new T-Mobile Un-carrier" event and now AT&T is firing back. In a statement provided to CNET, an AT&T spokesperson called out T-Mobile's newest pledges for first responders and education as a "marketing stunt."

"We have a deep and genuine commitment to connecting first responders and using technology to enrich education, not marketing stunts contingent on getting something approved," the AT&T spokesperson said. "If they believe it's critical to offer free access to these communities they would do it today, no conditions or questions asked."

On Thursday T-Mobile announced a host of new initiatives -- including free service for 10 years for first responders, a new $15-per-month 5G plan and free home internet for 10 million households for five years -- in a bid to try and get its pending $26.5 billion merger with Sprint across the finish line.

While approved by the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice, 16 state attorneys general led by New York and California are suing to block the deal over concerns that it is anti-competitive and will lead to higher prices for consumers.

In its announcement, T-Mobile made it clear that it needs the Sprint deal to offer the programs it announced.

"Everything we announced today is dependent on the massive capacity expansion that comes from the new T-Mobile," T-Mobile Chief Operating Officer Mike Sievert said in a call with reporters.

AT&T, which has a special service for first responders called FirstNet that gives emergency personnel priority access to its 4G LTE network when they need it, also took exception to T-Mobile's approach there.

"The communications needs of first responders are not a bargaining chip -- they are a critical lifesaving tool," the spokesperson said. "FirstNet was born to provide the reliability, capability and accountability that the public safety community requires to carry out its life-saving missions. To think that they can turn serving first responders into a marketing ploy, T-Mobile reveals how little they know about what public safety fought for.

"That's why FirstNet is more than a service plan," the spokesperson continued. "It's a robust, dedicated platform built specifically to serve and advance the first responder community over the next 20 or more years."

T-Mobile declined to comment.

Legislators Demand F.A.A. Explain Why It Overruled Its Own Experts on 737 Max - The New York Times

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:54 PM PST

Two of the most powerful lawmakers on the House transportation committee demanded Thursday that the Federal Aviation Administration explain why some of its managers overruled the agency's own safety experts during the development of Boeing's 737 Max plane.

Representatives Peter A. DeFazio of Oregon, who is the chairman of the committee, and Rick Larsen of Washington said in a letter to the agency that when F.A.A. employees raised concerns about a set of cables that help control the Max, they were sidelined by agency managers. The cables are part of a rudder system that is separate from the automated software that contributed to two fatal 737 Max accidents.

A New York Times investigation revealed in July that F.A.A. managers had sided with Boeing in a dispute over the cables, deciding not to require the company to change the system, citing the cost.

The letter also notes a different instance in which senior managers at the F.A.A. broke with their own employees' assessment and allowed Boeing to remove lightning protection from part of the 787 Dreamliner.

The episodes suggest that "the F.A.A.'s safety and technical experts are being circumvented or sidelined while the interests of Boeing are being elevated by F.A.A. senior management," Mr. DeFazio and Mr. Larsen wrote.

As the Max was being built, engineers at the F.A.A. who were responsible for approving the plane grew concerned about its new engines, which were bigger and more complex than on previous 737s. They worried that if the engines broke apart during a flight, there was a greater risk that the chunks would sever the cables, which control the plane's rudder. The F.A.A. employees wanted the company to make changes to avoid a potentially catastrophic failure.

But Boeing resisted the change, arguing that it was highly unlikely that an engine would explode midair and damage the cables. Against the advice of six F.A.A. specialists, senior leaders at the regulator decided not to force the company to redesign the cables. An F.A.A. employee later submitted an anonymous complaint about the incident to a safety board inside the agency.

"During meetings regarding this issue the cost to Boeing to upgrade the design was discussed," the engineer wrote in the complaint, which was reviewed by The Times. "The comment was made that there may be better places for Boeing to spend their safety dollars."

In an email Thursday, an F.A.A. spokesman, Lynn Lunsford, said the agency would "respond directly to the chairmen." A Boeing spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, said in a statement that the issues in the letter were "properly considered and addressed by Boeing, thoroughly reviewed with and approved by the F.A.A., and handled in full compliance."

The 737 Max, Boeing's best-selling jet, has been grounded since March after two crashes killed 346 people. Boeing is still working to return the Max to the air. In the aftermath of the two accidents, the F.A.A. has come under scrutiny for its close ties to Boeing and its reliance on the company's employees to determine the safety of new airplanes.

In the letter, the lawmakers also highlighted a second set of safety concerns. They wrote that F.A.A. employees had flagged Boeing's decision to remove from the Dreamliner's wings copper foil designed to protect against lightning strikes.

F.A.A. engineers worried that the change might increase the risk of a fuel tank explosion midair. The agency rejected the new design in February, but by then Boeing had already produced dozens of Dreamliners without the foil on the wings, according to the letter.

The fact that Boeing changed the design before it was approved by the F.A.A. demonstrates "either willful neglect of the federal aviation regulatory structure or an oversight system in need of desperate repair," the lawmakers wrote.

A Boeing employee said the company had discussed the issue with Ali Bahrami, the F.A.A.'s head of safety, according to the letter. Mr. Bahrami previously worked as an industry lobbyist for a trade group that represents Boeing. On March 1, the F.A.A. reversed course, and accepted the new design.

Last month, the regulator asked Boeing to submit more documentation demonstrating the safety of the new design. The lawmakers criticized the regulator's actions as "woefully inadequate to ensure the safety of the flying public."

Taken together, the lawmakers said, the incidents "raise questions about how the agency weighs the validity of safety issues raised by its own experts compared to objections raised by the aircraft manufacturers the F.A.A. is supposed to oversee."

Regulators want revised Boeing 737 Max software documentation, company says - CNBC

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:34 PM PST

U.S. and European regulators have asked Boeing to revise documentation on its proposed 737 Max software fix, the planemaker confirmed Wednesday, further complicating its efforts to return the jet to service by year-end.

The world's largest planemaker had submitted documentation in a key part of an approval process, already delayed by months, for a 737 Max software upgrade in the wake of two crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia that killed 346 people.

U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) officials flagged a number of issues over the weekend at a Rockwell Collins facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, during a documentation audit of how the new software was developed, sources told Reuters.

Boeing and regulators will return to Iowa at a yet-to-be-determined date to complete the audit, the officials said.

"We think there is still some work to be done," EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky told Reuters on Monday.

Boeing spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Wednesday the company "provided technical documentation to the regulators as part of the software validation process. The documentation was complete, and it was provided in a format consistent with past submissions. Regulators have requested that the information be conveyed in a different form, and the documentation is being revised accordingly."

One person briefed on the matter characterized the issue differently and said Boeing's paperwork had gaps, was substandard and meant regulators could not complete the audit, a crucial step before the plane can be certified to return to service.

The person said it could take "weeks" to satisfy regulators in a worst-case scenario, though Boeing believes it can address the omissions in a matter of days.

The extent of the delays caused by the documentation requirements was not immediately clear. There was no indication of any need to revise the software package based on the audit, sources said.

Boeing is ramping up the number of people assigned to address the software documentation officials, a source said. Boeing shares closed down about 1%.

Boeing chief financial officer Gregory Smith said at an industry conference on Wednesday that the company's job is "make sure we get everything done right on time, answer every question, every document that's needed, every form of software enhancement that's required anytime."

The FAA declined to comment on the audit but said it was "following a thorough process, not a prescribed timeline, for returning the Boeing 737 Max to passenger service."

In September, FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said the agency had told Boeing "it's really better to be very methodical and very detailed rather than try to rush a partially completed product and then say, Well get back to you with the rest of it."

Dickson said the FAA will need 30 days from the time of the as-yet unscheduled certification test flight before it can unground the plane.

A third person, familiar with FAA documentation audits but who did not participate in the 737 Max review over the weekend, said such audits frequently uncover inconsistencies or omissions in documentation but rarely lead to changes to the underlying software or system.

Boeing's fastest-selling jetliner has been grounded worldwide since March, cutting off a key source of cash for Boeing while forcing airlines to cancel thousands of flights. Many carriers have taken the Max off schedules into 2020.

American Airlines Chief Executive Doug Parker told a conference on Wednesday that American's plan to put some of its 737 Max jets back in the air in mid-January would require FAA approval in "the earlier part of December."

Boeing has repeatedly delayed its timeline for returning the plane to flight by the end of 2019, as regulators have scrutinized proposed fixes.

Documentation requirements are central to certification for increasingly complex aircraft software, and can become a source of delays. In 2008, EASA nearly derailed Europe's Airbus A400M military transporter over software documentation following a failed audit.

Doan’s late goal gives Pomperaug win over Weston, SWC title - Danbury News Times

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:31 PM PST

NEWTOWN — The Andrew Doan-Jack O'Brien connection has produced goals for Pomperaug all season, and with the season in the balance the duo hooked up again to deliver the Panthers their most imortant win thus far.

The goal didn't come in overtime, but might as well have with sudden death on the horizon.

Doan headed in a long throw-in from O'Brien with just 27 seconds left, giving the Panthers the SWC title with a dramatic 2-1 win over defending champion Weston Thursday night at Newtown High School.

"Jack put a perfect throw and could not have placed it any better," Doan said. "I just thought I had to get up there in the last seconds and get something going. It's a great feeling."

"It's insane," O'Brien added. "There's no other feeling."

Doan scored both goals for the Panthers (13-5-1), who won their first league title since 2010.

"We're ecstatic," Pomperaug coach Joe Mancini said. "They've been through a lot and they deserve it. They've worked very hard. … We had to play for each other and that was the turning point."

Janak Sekaran scored the goal for Weston, which tied the game with 10 minutes left. The Trojans made it back to the final despite a whole new lineup of players with less experience than their predecessors.

"I think it's easy to slip out of your style of play," Weston coach Kevin Fitzsimmons said. "That's why we always try to let them play because they have to work it out on the field themselves. I think that experience was missing tonight. If someone was there with more varsity experience I think we would be able to put the ball down and relax."

Doan's first goal came late in the first half after the Panthers were threatening throughout. Weston — which lost All-SWC first teamer Connor Grace early in the first half with an injury — had one set piece after another in the second half but couldn't break down the Panthers defense until Sekaran hit a long range shot underneath the crossbar.

Panthers midfielder Jaden Hozer shined Thursday, helping the Panthers create chances and dished out a perfect assist for Doan's opener.

"He's a big part of our team and always has been," O'Brien said. "I give props to him; throughout this season he's worked hard no matter what's happened."

Weston (12-3-3) goalie Devin Riley was spectacular in defeat for the Trojans, making key saves to keep his team in the contest. He finished with 10, including one to keep it 1-1 in the second half.

"He's had a great season," Fitzsimmons said. "I think that was a world class save just before they scored. He's Mr. Reliable and has save hands for us."

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Andrew Doan, Pomperaug: His header will be remembered in Southbury for quite some time.

UP NEXT

Both teams have an excellent chance to advance far in their respective state tournaments. Pomperaug made a strong run in Class LL last year and is back in L, while Weston moved from L to M. Tournament brackets will be released Friday.

QUOTABLE

"You can't ask for anything better than that because it's just about over at that point," Mancini said of the late goal. "That's how you write up the storybook."

"I think it's important that we have games to go," Fitzsimmons said. "Obviously everyone is hurt right now; the biggest thing we can take from tonight is that we can learn from it."

Boeing 737 Max return could be delayed by audit of fixes - Crain's Chicago Business

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:24 PM PST

(Bloomberg) — Regulators overseeing changes on Boeing Co.'s 737 Max rejected an audit of how the software was being developed, prompting the company to make revisions and possibly slowing the return of the jetliner to service, said a person familiar with the action.

The issue with Boeing's audit was brought up in recent days at a meeting in a Collins Aerospace Systems facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, attended by officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency, said the person.

Boeing and Collins, a division of United Technologies Corp. that developed computer automation on the 737 Max, are making changes to a safety feature on the jet that was involved in two fatal crashes on the plane that killed 346 people. As a result of testing in recent months, Boeing is also undertaking a more complex revision of how the flight computers on the plane function.

Full audit results are required before final simulator tests of the changes can be conducted. Depending on how long it takes to satisfy FAA and EASA, it could push back a certification flight test and regulators' final decision on lifting the flight ban by a few days or even weeks, said the person.

Boeing, in a statement, said it provided technical documents to regulators "in a format consistent with past submissions."

"Regulators have requested that the information be conveyed in a different form, and the documentation is being revised accordingly," according to the statement. "While this happens we continue to work with the FAA and global regulators on certification of the software for safe return of the MAX to service."

EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky said after the Iowa meeting, "we think there is still some work to be done," according to Janet Northcote, a spokeswoman for the agency. She declined to specify the issues.

The issues with the audit were earlier reported by Reuters.

Samsung Galaxy S11e may have a bigger battery than you expect - TechRadar

Samsung's Galaxy S11 series may sport bigger batteries than we had initially expected thanks to a leak about the smallest handset in the range.

The Galaxy S11e's battery has been leaked thanks to a listing on a Korean safety website - spotted by GalaxyClub - that includes a photo of the phone's battery cell.

That cell says it has a capacity of 3,730mAh. If that's true, it will likely be marketed as a 3,800mAh cell (often companies round the number up) which is remarkably bigger than the 3,100mAh one inside the Galaxy S10e.

There's currently no evidence of how big the battery will be in the Galaxy S11 or Galaxy S11 Plus, but if the company is opting to improve the Galaxy S10e sequel that may mean battery improvements are coming across the board.

Another theory for this battery increase is that this will be a 5G model of the phone. Samsung is expected to introduce a new variety of 5G models for its Galaxy S11 series, and that feature can be a bigger drain on battery.

It would make sense if Samsung decides to increase the battery capacity in order to cope with that, so it may be that the standard version of the phone won't sport a bigger battery after all.

3-year-old firefighter in viral video shows it's never too early to learn how to save lives - 10News

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 07:54 PM PST

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A 3-year-old Florida boy is being called a "viral hero."

Asher Shell comes from a family of first responders, and he's proving it runs in the family.

"We're just a family of first responders, and we're trying to teach the little ones young," said Christopher Shell, a Boynton Beach Fire Department firefighter and paramedic.

Shell has been a firefighter since 2008. His wife, Jenna, is a Boca Raton dispatcher, and even Shell's in-laws are first responders.

"I think it's a coincidence," said Shaul Fuchsman, Shell's father-in-law and member of the Palm Beach County Air Rescue. "It's a very demanding and rewarding industry."

So it's no wonder that when Shell was called out to an emergency on Nov. 1, Ashed begged his father to tag along.

"I got toned out to a call and [Asher] got so upset that he couldn't come with me on the call to help save people - all he kept crying was 'I want to go save people,'" Shell said.

That's when he and his wife devised a plan two days later to stage a mock CPR drill complete with a response via a Power Wheels fire truck, a real fire and a 10-pound trapped patient.

While the approximately one-and-a-half-minute is gaining a lot of traction online, the family hopes it sends a strong message to all parents.

"If I can teach a three-year-old how to do CPR anybody can learn how to do CPR," said Shell. "It's not hard and we should all learn how to do it so that way one day you can help save a life."

The Shells video has been shared more than 20,000 times. Watch the full video below.

Dollar holds gains on progress in US-China trade talks - CNBC

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 07:34 PM PST

The dollar held on to its gains versus the yen and the Swiss franc on Friday as a U.S.-China agreement to roll back tariffs on each others' goods supported riskier assets, even as some reports suggest a preliminary trade pact is far from a done deal.

The yen also nursed losses against the euro and the Australian dollar as progress in resolving a 16-month long trade war between the world's two largest economies weakened demand for safe havens.

China and the United States have agreed to roll back tariffs on each others' goods in a "phase one" trade deal if it is completed, officials from both sides said on Thursday.

However, there is still some skepticism about a trade deal as officials inside and outside the White House have bristled at the notion of giving up punitive tariffs.

Muddying the water further, White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told Fox News Channel in an interview on Thursday that the United States is "very, very optimistic" about reaching a trade deal with China soon.

Sterling traded near a two-week low after two Bank of England unexpectedly voted to cut interest rates due to uncertainties posed by Britain's fraught exit from the European Union.

The remaining seven policy makers on the board voted to keep policy unchanged, but Governor Mark Carney and others said they would consider a cut in the future.

On the whole, sentiment is likely to remain supportive for the dollar, equities and other risky assets as a de-escalation in the U.S.-China trade war removes a huge risk to the global economic outlook.

The dollar index against a basket of six major currencies stood at 98.136, up 1% this week.

"The overall tone is risk-on, which is a positive for the dollar and a negative for the yen," said Tsutomu Soma, general manager of fixed income business solutions at SBI Securities Co in Tokyo.

"We can see this in other markets, which is why stocks are so strong. We still need to figure out when the United States and China will sign this deal, but the mood so far is supportive for markets."

Trump has used tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese goods as his primary weapon in a trade war that has hurt global growth and rattled financial markets in the past year.

The dollar held steady at 109.34 yen in Asia on Friday, close to a five-month high, and is headed for a 1.1% gain for the week.

The greenback edged higher to 0.9953 Swiss franc, on course for a 1% gain.

The pound traded a $1.2815, close to the lowest since Oct. 24. Cable was on course for a 1% decline this week.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected the BoE to vote unanimously to keep Bank Rate at 0.75%.

The announcement of the 7-2 split weighed on sterling as market odds on a cut next year rose as high as 80%.

To date, the BoE has resisted following the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank in cutting its main interest rate, but the outcome of Thursday's meeting suggests the BoE is poised to change its stance on monetary policy.

Stocks near record highs on US-China trade - 7NEWS

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 07:04 PM PST

World stocks rallied to near record highs on Friday after China said it had agreed with the United States to cancel tariffs in phases, a key demand of Beijing for sealing a deal to end a trade war that has slowed economic growth and roiled markets.

MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe rose slightly to stand at 543.70, just a hair off the record high of 550.63 reached in January 2018.

The index compiler's gauge of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.2 per cent in early trade while Tokyo's Nikkei jumped 0.75 per cent to a 13-month high.

China and the United States have agreed to roll back tariffs on each others' goods as part of the first phase of a trade deal, officials from both sides said on Thursday, in further signs of progress even as both side continue to haggle over several contentious issues.

"As the US-China dispute seems to be heading for a resolution while the developed world is adopting very easy monetary policy, risk assets are enjoying the tail wind," said Masahiro Ichikawa, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management.

The Chinese commerce ministry, without laying out a timetable, said the two countries had agreed to cancel the tariffs in phases.

But multiple sources familiar with the talks said the plan faces fierce internal opposition at the White House and from outside advisers.

While US stocks pared gains on the report of the opposition to the deal in Washington, the Dow and S&P 500 did close at all-time highs, while the Nasdaq missed a record close by less than two-tenths of a point.

The S&P 500 gained ended 0.27 per cent higher at 3,085.18.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index has also pierced through its January 2018 peak to come within a striking distance of its record high set in April 2015.

As investors wind back their buying in safe assets, the 10-year US Treasuries yield rose 11.8 basis points to 1.930 per cent , marking the biggest daily increase since Nov. 9, 2016, which followed the surprise election victory by Donald Trump.

The yield has jumped to as high as 1.973 per cent, a three-month peak, on Thursday and last stood at 1.924 per cent.

The 10-year Japanese government bond yield rose to minus 0.050 per cent, a 5-1/2-month high, as expectations of a Bank of Japan rate cuts dissipated in the past week or so.

In the currency market, the yuan stood firm while safe-haven currencies lost their edge.

The offshore yuan traded at 6.9976 yuan per dollar, having hit a three-month high of 6.9530 per dollar in US trade on Thursday.

The dollar climbed to 109.31 yen, reaching a five-month high of 109.49 the previous day.

The euro slipped to $1.1050, having marked a low of $1.10355 in US trade, its weakest since Oct. 16.

That helped to push up the dollar index to three-week highs of 98.236. The index last stood at 98.134.

Gold also eased to $1,467.9 per ounce, having hit a five-week low of $1.460.7 on Thursday.

Oil prices gained on the US-China trade deal hopes. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude lost 0.1 per cent to $57.09 per barrel in Asia but has gained 1.4 per cent so far this week.

Kyle Walker's cameo in goal: Sportsmail reveal 10 outfield players who have also gone in goal - Daily Mail

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 06:56 PM PST

From Phil Jagielka's display against Arsenal, Harry Kane's howler and Cosmin Moti's shootout heroics to see Ludogorets qualify for the Champions League... after Kyle Walker's cameo, Sportsmail looks at 10 other outfield players who have gone in goal

Kyle Walker stole the headlines during Manchester City's draw at Atalanta on Wednesday night when he was forced to go in goal.

The right back was used as an emergency stopper by Pep Guardiola after substitute goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who had replaced injured No 1 Ederson at half-time, was sent off in the second half.

Walker's first involvement was to save a free-kick and the England international managed to keep a clean sheet as City left Italy with a point in the Champions League Group C fixture.

The 29-year-old is not the first outfield player to go in goal though as Sportsmail looks back at others who have donned the gloves in the past...

Niall Quinn vs Derby County (1991)

Sticking with Manchester City; April 20, 1991 will always be fondly remembered by their supporters as Niall Quinn day. City relegated Derby County in the old Division One with a 2-1 win. Quinn opened the scoring with a left-footed volley in the first half before turning his hand to goal when Tony Cotton was shown a red card for a foul in the penalty box.

Quinn stepped up and promptly saved Dean Saunders' penalty - diving correctly low to his left to tip it behind for a corner.

Vinnie Jones vs Newcastle (1995)

The thought of Vinnie Jones bearing down on you when you're through on goal would have been a daunting prospect for anybody, but for Newcastle's attackers that became a reality on October 24, 1995.

Trailing 3-0 at St. James' Park, Wimbledon's trip up north became worse when goalkeeper Paul Herald was sent off on 47 minutes. With the Dons having made all of their changes, it was up to Jones to go in goal.

Although he did concede three goals, as Wimbledon went on to lose 6-1, the Wales international's stint was entertaining and impressive as he made several good saves against an attack that boasted Les Ferdinand and David Ginola.

If you've seen the UK film version of Mean Machine, then you know where the character 'The Monk' got its inspiration from.

Lucas Radebe vs Manchester United (1996)

A match that helped seal Lucas Radebe's legacy among Leeds supporters was his goalkeeping cameo at fiercest rivals Manchester United.

Mark Beeney was dismissed for handling outside his area with just 15 minutes of the match gone. With smaller benches than now, Radebe was called on to be Leeds' auxiliary goalkeeper.

The centre back, who grew up as a goalkeeper initially in South Africa, was excellent spurning the likes of Andrew Cole and Brian McClair.

It took until the 72nd minute for Radebe to be beaten thanks to a Roy Keane strike right in the bottom corner as United won 1-0.

Jan Koller vs Bayern Munich (2002)

Bayern Munich versus Borussia Dortmund is always a spicy affair and their clash on November 9, 2002 was no different as the former won 2-1.

Playing at their old Olympiastadion, Bayern fell behind to their bitter rivals when Jan Koller gave Dortmund the lead.

However, the game turned on six second-half minutes in which Roque Santa Cruz and Claudio Pizarro overturned the deficit before Dortmund goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off... for arguing.

Dortmund had used their three substitutions so turned to their giant 6ft 6in striker Koller. The Czech Republic international kept a clean sheet during his 24 minutes in goal.

John Terry vs Reading (2006)

To lose one goalkeeper in a match to injury is unfortunate, to lose another in the same game is pure rotten luck. This fate applied to Chelsea at Reading in the Premier League on October 14, 2006.

After Petr Cech's sickening head injury, the Blues were then without back-up goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini after he was knocked unconscious in second-half stoppage time.

Up stepped Chelsea's captain to help preserve their clean sheet as they won 1-0.

Phil Jagielka vs Arsenal (2006)

Probably the most memorable spell in goal out of the names selected in this list. Sheffield United were back in the Premier League for the first time in 12 years and scrapping for survival when Arsenal came to Bramall Lane on December 30, 2006.

On 61 minutes, goalkeeper Paddy Kenny pulled up when taking a goal kick and couldn't continue. With no substitute goalkeeper on United's bench, Phil Jagielka went in goal.

It was a ploy that manager Neil Warnock often used, with Jagielka going in goal four times, and it worked as the hosts saw out a 1-0 win.

His close-range save from Robin van Persie is one that any professional stopper would be proud of.

John O'Shea vs Tottenham (2007)

John O'Shea was Mr Utility at Manchester United as the Republic of Ireland legend proved at White Hart Lane on February 4, 2007.

Leading 4-0 at Tottenham, United were cruising to victory when Edwin van der Sar pulled up in the final few moments.

Having already made their final substitution, which was O'Shea, Sir Alex Ferguson turned to his No 22 to go in goal - ahead of Rio Ferdinand who wanted the auxiliary role.

After being sold a short backpass by Ferdinand, O'Shea bailed out his team-mate by charging out of his goal and denying international team-mate Robbie Keane in a one-on-one scenario.

'I asked Edwin whether he had a clean sheet bonus when we got into the dressing room because I want half of it!' said O'Shea afterwards.

Rio Ferdinand vs Portsmouth (2008)

Ferdinand did get a chance to showcase his goalkeeping skills 13 months later though for United. It came in a home FA Cup quarter-final tie against Portsmouth, which they lost 1-0 - eventually costing them the chance at a second Treble.

The Red Devils were forced into replacing the injured Van der Sar at half-time but then his replacement Tomasz Kuszczak was sent off with 12 minutes to go for a foul on Milan Baros.

With no more substitutes left, Ferdinand went in goal with his first job to face a Sulley Muntari penalty.

The England centre back guessed the right way, low to his left, but Muntari's effort was too powerful.

Cosmin Moti vs Steaua Bucharest (2014)

Without a doubt this is the most decisive piece of goalkeeping on our list.

Trailing 1-0 to Steaua Bucharest in the first leg of their Champions League play-off qualifier, Bulgarian side Ludogorets qualified for the group stages for the first time in their history in 2014 thanks to defender Cosmin Moti.

The centre back, went in goal after keeper Vladislav Stoyanov was sent off in the final minute of extra-time with the scoreline 1-1 on aggregate.

In an an incredible finale to the tie with Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest, Moti scored the first spot-kick and then saved two penalties as they prevailed 6-5 in the shootout.

Harry Kane vs Asteras Tripoli (2014)

It's safe to say that Harry Kane is a lot better at scoring goals than saving them - as his performance on October 23, 2014 against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League proved.

After scoring a hat-trick, the striker turned his hand at going in goal after Hugo Lloris was shown a straight red card for bringing down Tasos Tsokanis as the last man.

With no substitutes left, Kane took the gloves. His first action was to pick the ball out of the net after an embarrassing gaffe where Jeronimo Barrales' tame free-kick squirmed under his body.

Football cat: Viral black cat from Monday Night Football still on the loose at MetLife Stadium - CBS News

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 06:54 PM PST

The black cat that famously darted onto the field in the middle of a Monday Night Football game this week is still on the loose. The cat stole the show during the Cowboys-Giants game at MetLife Stadium, but it quickly disappeared — and has not been seen since.

Officials at MetLife Stadium have been unable to locate the elusive feline after several days of searching, the stadium tweeted Thursday. But they haven't given up.

The search began on Tuesday morning with multiple humane traps and a search party. After initial plans failed, the stadium brought in PuppyKittyNYCity, a no-kill shelter, to help with the search.

"We are hopeful that together we can find the black cat that we fell in love with Monday night," the stadium said. "We are grateful for the outpouring of support and will continue to work with PuppyKittyNYCity to try to locate the black cat."

Trending News

PuppyKittyNYCity said that if the cat is caught, it will be assessed for a home or relocation, The Associated Press reports.

"Even though we want to relocate him, we still support TNR (trap, neuter, release) programs," the nonprofit, volunteer-run rescue organization said in its release.

The stadium also denied "erroneous reports" that it houses and feeds a secret cohort of 300 feral cats on the stadium's grounds.

"From time to time, we have seen cats on the complex and the Meadowlands Racetrack (located in the Sports Complex) has a TNR program in place and currently feeds approximately 30 band cats," the stadium said.

During the game's second quarter, the cat wandered onto the field before sprinting through the Giants' end zone. It eventually disappeared under a seat section. The game was delayed for about five minutes due to the disruption.

Some fans believe the cat brought bad luck — the Giants had been leading the Cowboys prior to the disruption, but ended up losing 37-18.

Bill Gates and the billionaires vs. Elizabeth Warren, explained - Vox.com

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 05:34 PM PST

Leon Cooperman is worth more than $3 billion. He spent 25 years at Goldman Sachs before starting his own hedge fund, which in 2017 reached a $4.9 million settlement with federal regulators over insider trading charges while admitting no wrongdoing. And this week, he cried about Elizabeth Warren on CNBC. "I care," Cooperman said.

Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with crying on television or anywhere else, and Cooperman's emotions appeared genuine. What's more, he's far from the only billionaire fretting about Warren's candidacy in public. Talking to billionaires about their thoughts on her is all the rage at the moment.

Bill Gates at the New York Times DealBook conference on Wednesday said he wasn't so sure about how "open-minded" Warren is or whether she would be willing to meet with him. He said he's paid $10 billion in taxes but joked he would get a little hesitant about paying $100 billion in taxes after doing "a little math about what I have left over." Gates wouldn't have to pay $100 billion under the Massachusetts Democrat's proposed wealth tax, but even if he did, he would still have more than $6 billion left. He also wouldn't say whether he would support her over President Donald Trump.

Also this week, CNBC brought JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon on and asked him whether Warren was "anti-business," to which he said he's worried Warren uses some "pretty harsh words" and "vilifies successful people." He continued, "I don't like vilifying anybody. I think we should applaud successful people."

At the rate we're going, we're just steps away from holding séances with the ghosts of John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie to ask them how they feel about Warren.

As Warren has risen in the polls in the Democratic primary, so has the number of Wall Street bigwigs and corporate executives speaking out against her. The senator has tried to emphasize that she doesn't have a "beef with billionaires" but instead thinks that people who built their wealth in America and using American resources — infrastructure, workers, public services — should give a little back. But her rich detractors aren't buying it.

"She's not a serious person," Cooperman told me in a phone interview on Wednesday evening. He later declared, "When I get through with her, it'll cost her the election."

Except, will it?

Warren is a longtime critic of the financial industry. She's running on a message of big structural change. If she's elected, her first priority will be a sweeping anti-corruption package, and one of her most high-profile policy proposals is a plan to impose a wealth tax on those with fortunes of over $50 million. So it's no surprise that some of the richest of the rich don't like her (though plenty of the finance industry's rank and file like her just fine). And she seems to relish their opposition. In other words, Warren versus rich guys isn't going away anytime soon.

In September, Cooperman told CNBC he thought the stock market would fall by 25 percent if Warren wins the presidency, if it opens at all, and the next month he said he believes the same thing would happen with a Bernie Sanders victory. (Sanders has also proposed a wealth tax.)

Fellow billionaire hedge funder Paul Tudor Jones reportedly recently echoed Cooperman's 25 percent drop prediction if Warren wins in November 2020. And Steve Cohen, a billionaire whose former hedge fund paid $1.8 billion on criminal insider trading charges in 2013, warned the stock market would fall by 10 or 15 percent if Warren just gets the Democratic nomination. (Forecasters said Barack Obama and Donald Trump would tank the stock market before they were elected, too.)

Warren's big-money critics tend to couch their arguments as generalized warnings against her — she'll hurt the market, which is bad news for your 401(k); she's got the wrong ideas about the economy; or she's just not being very nice. But what they're not saying is that they've got bigger stakes in this game than a correction in the S&P 500 or a social media spat. Guys like this can withstand a mean tweet from a senator. It's the wealth tax that would wipe 2 percent off of their billions each year they've got a problem with.

"There's no need for a wealth tax, it won't work," Cooperman told me. He said that there are "plenty of taxes" out there already and that if you want to tax the wealthy more, closing loopholes and changing tax rates is the way to do it.

Cooperman, 76, has been trading barbs with Warren for weeks. "I believe in a progressive income tax and the rich paying more. But this is the fucking American dream she is shitting on," he told Politico's Ben White in October.

The same month, he responded to one of Warren's tweets taking a dig at him with a five-page letter to the senator criticizing her "soak-the-rich positions on taxes and economic policy" and claiming she had admonished him "as if a parent chiding an ungrateful child." He pointed out he had signed the Giving Pledge — Gates's and Warren Buffett's initiative where the rich promise to give away their fortunes when they die — and said that his was a "classic American success story" — he is the son of Polish immigrants and grew up in the Bronx. He also listed off multiple other American success stories who have also given back, including the founders of Home Depot, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. All of the figures he named are white men.

Cooperman, who wrote a similar letter to former President Barack Obama in 2011 criticizing him for his "divisive, polarizing tone," told me he believes his letter to Warren was "very respectful," unlike how he feels about her treatment of him — and rich people as a whole.

"The knocking of wealthy people is pandering to a different sector of the economy and misleading people," he told me. He's clearly irked by the back and forth. "She doesn't know a goddamn thing about me," he said.

The thing that happens when some billionaire comes out against Warren is that she takes advantage of it to further her message. Another rich guy opposes her candidacy? Okay, fine, that's why you should vote for her, she says.

Sanders is doing the same thing. For example, he has for years been trading barbs with now-former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. This summer, his campaign rolled out an anti-endorsement list of rich and powerful people who oppose him, which includes both Dimon and Blankfein.

Among the Democratic electorate right now, it's not good to be in tight with corporations and Wall Street. Instead, it's a liability. Warren and Sanders are relying on small-dollar donors to fund their presidential campaigns and have sworn off high-dollar fundraisers and super PACs, in contrast to some of the candidates they're out-raising, including former Vice President Joe Biden. So when billionaires go out to bash them, it doesn't really hurt Warren or Sanders. It helps them.

That's not to say this is all super healthy. Fear-mongering that Warren is an evil socialist coming to take away all your stuff plays to the people tuning into CNBC, whether from the trading floor at Citi or from a living room in Wisconsin. And Warren's criticisms of powerful people she believes have done wrong can get heated. (See: her public grilling of the former Wells Fargo CEO.)

But these rich men aren't used to being challenged, not by a democratic socialist from Vermont and not by a law professor who's a woman.

One managing director and Warren supporter at a large private equity firm recently told me he believes some of her ultra-rich opponents are genuinely offended by the way she talks about them. "People feel like there was a set of rules that were put out there and they followed them," he said. "They played the game that they were supposed to play and they got rich."

That seems to be the case with Cooperman.

But that doesn't mean the game is good, that we have to keep playing it, or that we shouldn't talk about changing it so that more people can win. Income inequality has exploded and the wealth gap has expanded in the US in recent decades. That says something about our society at large, well beyond just the political discourse.

As my colleague Matt Yglesias recently pointed out, the fact that all of these billionaires voicing their personal opinions to the world in and of itself is a news story shows how disproportionately influential the rich are on American politics.

On Thursday, CNBC's Scott Wapner tweeted at Warren asking whether she would meet with Cooperman and then challenged her to take part in a televised town hall with the investor about "capitalism, wealth, and how to improve the system." It's not as though Warren has a lot on her plate right now, running for president while also serving as a US senator, or other debates to attend. It's also worth noting he's not making the same request of a man. If you want to do Warren versus Cooperman live, why not do Sanders versus Blankfein, too?

Man United's three-goal win means little in isolation but it's something for Solskjaer & Co. to build on - ESPN

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 05:01 PM PST

MANCHESTER, England -- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been asking his Manchester United team to get more "second goals" and when it came against Partizan Belgrade on the way to a 3-0 victory, it was almost -- almost -- worth the wait.

Teenager Mason Greenwood had already opened the scoring when Anthony Martial took four exquisite touches to travel five yards into the penalty area and poke his finish just inside the far post. In his wake lay three Partizan defenders -- Bojan Ostojic, Slobodan Urosevic and Starhinja Pavlovic -- all with varying degrees of distress on their faces. It drew a smile and a clap from Solskjaer on the bench, but not much more. More than anything, he looked relieved to see his team with a two-goal advantage.

Before Partizan's visit to Old Trafford on Thursday night, United had gone 1-0 up on 11 occasions this season. Just six times they had gone on to win and only three times had they gone on to score a second goal. Martial's goal marked the first time since January that United scored twice in the first half of a home game. Goals, particularly that crucial second, have been hard to come by but Solskjaer has been keen to insist there are signs of progress despite a miserable start to his first full season in charge.

"There have been real signs of encouragement since we last played at Old Trafford," the United boss wrote in his pre-match programme notes. "We were on the front foot against Liverpool and we really should have won the game. At Norwich, we were a joy to watch going forward. Then we came through a tough Carabao Cup tie at Chelsea thanks to a bit of magic from Marcus Rashford."

Solskjaer's endless positivity has started to wear thin with some fans but against Partizan, there was tangible evidence to back it up. By the time Greenwood coolly stepped beyond Urosevic to put United ahead in the 21st minute, it should already have been 2-0. Inside the first 10 minutes alone, Rashford slashed a shot wide of the post from Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross from the right and saw a point blank effort saved by Partizan goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic. Martial, meanwhile, could have had a first half hat-trick had he not skied two good chances either side of his bit of solo magic.

Rashford, at the centre of most of the good things United did, got the goal he deserved shortly after half-time to make it 3-0. It marked just the third time all season that United had scored three times in a single game but beyond the stats, it was a performance (particularly in the first half) that seemed a world away from their stale display in Serbia two weeks ago, during which United had one shot on target and needed a Martial penalty to scrape a narrow 1-0 win. With 20 minutes still to play at Old Trafford, they had managed 14 shots and seven on target.

"We couldn't live with their tempo," admitted Partizan manager Savo Milosevic after the match.

United fans will know by now not to get carried away. After all, their last home win in the Europa League was followed up with a dire defeat at West Ham. Three days after an impressive win at Chelsea, they were beaten 1-0 at Bournemouth.

It was an unqualified success to secure their place in the Europa League knockout rounds with two games remaining but a better test of where they stand will come against Brighton on Sunday. It says everything about their form this season that victory over Graham Potter's side would be their first at home in the Premier League since mid-September. Rashford said earlier this week that hopes of a top-four finish are far from over but if they to pull it off, they will have to beat teams like Brighton at home. It is certainly not guaranteed; Brighton actually head into the fixture two points and two places above their hosts in the table.

Despite that demoralising defeat at Bournemouth last weekend, there is a different feel around Old Trafford than there was a month ago. Since Martial returned to the squad following a eight-week lay-off with a thigh injury, United have won four and drawn one of their six games, scoring 10 goals. The Frenchman has got three goals in his last four games, Rashford five in his last six. There are, at least, signs of life.

United supporters have heard too often about watershed moments and turning points to start debating whether this was one or not. The truth is it's far too early to say, but it was a night when they were treated to goals, entertainment and a win, all of which have been in short supply for far too long. Yes, it was the Europa League and yes, it was Partizan Belgrade, the fourth-best team in the Serbian SuperLiga this season, but every good run has to start somewhere. Solskjaer will hope he still has a reason to smile on Sunday afternoon.

The Latest: Sam Rainsy affirms determination to return home - Manistee News Advocate

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 04:19 PM PST

Updated

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The Latest on the attempted return of opposition politicians to Cambodia (all times local):

8:15 p.m.

Exiled Cambodian opposition politician Sam Rainsy has made an online broadcast affirming his determination to return home to lead a movement to oust the long-serving leader, despite being stopped from boarding a plane from Paris to Bangkok, from where he planned to cross into Cambodia on Saturday.

He said on Facebook Live that he and fellow leaders of his banned Cambodia National Rescue Party have not changed their plans for a return, which is opposed by their political foe, Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Sam Rainsy advised his 4.8 million Facebook followers not to be disappointed, and accused Hun Sen of being scared to allow him to return.

Thailand has barred Sam Rainsy's entry and Malaysia has limited the freedom of movement of his party members at the apparent request of Cambodia.

Sam Rainsy said party leaders are seeking another way to make their return.

___

6:30 p.m.

A Thai Airways employee says exiled Cambodian opposition politician Sam Rainsy was not allowed to board a flight from Paris to Bangkok because his booking was not valid.

Sam Rainsy had vowed to return from exile in France to Cambodia on Saturday to lead a movement to force long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen from office.

The employee of the Thai flag carrier at Paris' Charles De Gaulle Airport, who answered a telephone call but declined to give his name, said a valid ticket had not been issued in Sam Rainsy's name and the economy class section for Thursday's flight was full. He said a booking in Sam Rainsy's name had been made for a new flight on Saturday.

Sam Rainsy had posted a photo on his Facebook page of what he said was his ticket which showed he had a confirmed booking for the Thursday flight. The photo also showed his booking reference and ticket number, opening the possibility that it could be changed online by a third party.

He told reporters at the airport that Thai Airways "said they had received from very high up the instruction to not allow me to board."

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Wednesday that Sam Rainsy would not be allowed to enter Thailand.

6:15 p.m.

A Malaysian rights commissioner says the government will release senior Cambodian opposition official Mu Sochua and two other activists.

Human Rights Commission member Jerald Joseph says authorities are preparing the papers and will allow Mu Sochua and two youth activists from her outlawed Cambodia National Rescue Party to remain in the country. He didn't give further details.

Mu Sochua was detained Wednesday night and the other two on Monday. The release was surprising because Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad earlier said Malaysian doesn't want to be used as a base for political activists.

A member of the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, Teddy Baguilat, welcomed their release and urged Thailand to follow Malaysia's example by allowing the Cambodian party's leader, Sam Rainsy, to enter Thailand.

He said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen "should get the message loud and clear that his persecution of the political opposition will not be exported wherever he wishes it to be."

___

6 p.m.

Cambodia's most prominent opposition leader, Sam Rainsy, says he was not allowed to board a Thai Airways flight from Paris to Bangkok in his attempt to return home from self-imposed exile to challenge his country's longtime leader.

Sam Rainsy told reporters on Thursday at Charles De Gaulle Airport that the Thai flag carrier "said they had received from very high up the instruction to not allow me to board."

Sam Rainsy, who has been living in France, says he's ready to risk imprisonment or death by returning to Cambodia to unseat Prime Minister Hun Sen, an autocratic leader who has clamped down on opposition.

He said his travel has been blocked by "Hun Sen, the Cambodian dictator who has asked to put pressure on neighboring countries to block my return to Cambodia."

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Wednesday that Sam Rainsy would not be allowed to enter Thailand.

___

5 p.m.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia doesn't want to be used as a base for political activists from the region, after the No. 2 official of a banned Cambodian opposition party was detained at the airport as she and other exiles planned a return to their homeland in a challenge to an autocratic leader.

Mahathir's stand mirrored that of Thailand, which this week also barred the Cambodian opposition officials from transiting through the country. They said they want to spark a popular movement to oust long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has clamped down on his opponents.

Cambodian officials have repeatedly warned that if the opposition leaders did make it back, they would immediately be arrested. Most if not all have convictions or charges pending against them, including inciting armed rebellion despite their avowedly nonviolent intentions.

Bill Gates and Elizabeth Warren are tweeting at each other about wealth inequality - The Verge

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 04:19 PM PST

Bill Gates and Elizabeth Warren are tweeting at each other — and it seems possible they could have an IRL conversation soon.

But let's first back up to why they're @-ing each other. Yesterday, the Microsoft co-founder was interviewed at The New York Times' DealBook Conference. The very first thing CNBC host Andrew Ross Sorkin asked Gates was his position on Warren's proposed 6 percent wealth tax on billionaires, which is designed to help pay for Medicare for All.

As part of his response, he discusses how a wealth tax could affect him, and if he's ever met with Elizabeth Warren:

His comment about paying over $10 billion in taxes can only be described as a tax flex (he seemed to be joking, but maybe not really). And he didn't seem confident that Warren would want to sit down with him.

Here's a video of his comments, with the tweeted quotes coming in just after the six-minute mark:

Well, last night Elizabeth Warren tweeted to say that, actually, she'd be happy to discuss her wealth tax further with Gates:

And this morning, Gates tweeted back — though he doesn't exactly agree to meet up. But he at least sounds interested in having some kind of conversation with Warren to discuss how to fight wealth inequality:

So, it doesn't seem as if the Elizabeth Warren Bill Gates Wealth Inequality Beer Summit Extravaganza will be happening imminently — but perhaps the two will talk soon. Since they're already chatting on Twitter, maybe they'll just keep tweeting back and forth, because that's a thing a Democratic candidate and one of the richest men in the world will do in 2019.

Update November 7th, 5:54PM ET: Linked to a different video of Bill Gates' comments, as the one we originally linked to was made private.

Elizabeth Warren offers to meet with Bill Gates over wealth tax - CNBC

Posted: 07 Nov 2019 04:09 PM PST

Sen. Elizabeth Warren speaks with Jim Cramer on Mad Money via satellite on Jan. 31,2019.

Adam Jeffery | CNBC

Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren announced on Wednesday that she would be willing to meet with Bill Gates, hours after the Microsoft co-founder stopped short of expressing support for Warren's proposed 6% tax on billionaires to cover Medicare costs. He had said he wasn't sure if she would be open to sitting down with him.

"I'm all for super-progressive tax systems," said Gates, the world's second-richest person and co-chair of the nonprofit Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, during an appearance at the New York Times' DealBook conference in New York on Wednesday.

He argued that taxing too much, though, could jeopardize the U.S.' status as the place to build innovative businesses. Gates said he was somewhere in between the extremes of cutting the estate tax and imposing a 6% wealth tax on billionaires, an idea Warren, a Massachusetts senator, floated last week. Gates said the estate tax could be higher.

Warren's willingness to talk with Gates suggests that there could be even more attention on an already controversial policy that's emerged in the run-up to the 2020 presidential race. In recent days Warren has exchanged criticisms with investor Leon Cooperman in the context of the federal contributions billionaires ought to make.

Gates said he has paid over $10 billion in taxes, more than anyone else, and would be happy to pay $20 billion.

"When you say I should pay $100 billion, OK, then I'm starting to do a little bit of math about what I have left over," Gates told Andrew Ross Sorkin, a New York Times columnist and co-anchor of CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Sorry, I'm just kidding."

Warren alluded to Gates' $100 billion comment in a Wednesday tweet in which she offered to meet with him.

Gates was asked how he would proceed if Warren were selected to face President Donald Trump in the election next year.

"I'm not going to make political declarations," Gates said. "But I do think no matter what policy somebody has in mind, a professional approach is even — as much as I disagree with some of the policy things that are out there, I do think a professional approach to the office — whoever I decide would have the more professional approach in the current situation probably will weigh — is the thing that I'll weigh the most."

Gates is hoping the more professional candidate is electable, he added.

"I'd love somebody to find a middle-ground approach, because the government's role in health care and better education — the government does need more resources than it has today," Gates said.
