Hindus allowed to build on disputed holy site, India's Supreme Court rules - CNN Posted: 08 Nov 2019 11:14 PM PST The 2.77 acres, previously claimed by both Hindus and Muslims, was the site of a 16th-century mosque demolished by right-wing mobs in 1992 in Ayodhya, a town in the state of Uttar Pradesh. But India's top court ruled Saturday that a Hindu temple to the god Ram could be constructed at the site, while giving Muslim representatives a separate 5 acres of land in the town. It has been one of the most politically charged land disputes in India, a complicated and exhaustive case that has been going for more than 100 years. To settle the ownership claim, the Supreme Court was asked to consider ancient texts, a 500-year-old diary written by a Mughal emperor, travelogues from medieval merchants, as well as colonial-era surveys and archeological records. The destruction of the Babri Masjid mosque by Hindu extremists in 1992 sparked some of the worst violence seen in India since independence, with more than 2,000 people killed in nationwide rioting. Dozens of temples and mosques were also targeted in a series of revenge attacks by Hindu and Muslim mobs. Since then there have been calls to build a Hindu temple on the contested site, a demand that has long animated Hindu hardliners -- and worried Indian liberals, who fear outbursts of sectarian violence. Such fears have been fanned by a spate of high-profile lynchings of minorities in recent years. Heavy securitySecurity has been beefed up across the region, especially in districts close to Ayodhya, and police officials have appealed for calm. Social media is being monitored for misinformation that could incite violence. In the months leading up to the ruling, authorities placed emergency restrictions in Ayodhya, banning public gatherings of four or more people. Over the past week, senior lawmakers and various religious and activist groups have appealed for calm and peace. There was also pressure to deliver a ruling as Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is set to retire on November 17, and the case would have had to reset if a verdict was not given. The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court set up a marathon of daily hearings for 40 days before concluding the case in October. What's the story? The Babri Masjid was built on a disputed site in Ayodhya in the 16th century and the town has been a religious flashpoint for more than 400 years. Hindus believe it is where Lord Rama, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism, was born. Muslims claim the land because the mosque was built there in 1528. But many Hindus believe the Babri Masjid was built on the ruins of a Hindu temple, which was allegedly destroyed by Babar, the first Mughal emperor of South Asia. Hindu and Muslim communities have lodged legal complaints and suits for decades. While there are 14 petitions currently before the Supreme Court, three -- one Muslim and two Hindu -- were the main focus of the case. They were the Muslim Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara -- a group of Hindu ascetics who are devotees of Lord Ram, and Ram Lalla Virajman -- the child deity of Lord Ram. Under law, a Hindu deity is considered a "juristic person" with the right to sue and be sued. In 2002, the Allahabad High Court began hearing a group of lawsuits filed by a number of Hindu and Muslim parties. In 2010, the Allahabad High Court ruled that the 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya should be divided equally among the three parties: the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla Virajman. But none of the parties were satisfied with the verdict. They filed an appeal in the Supreme Court in 2010. The argumentsThe Sunni Waqf Board, an elected legal body that oversees Sunni Islamic properties endowed for religious or charitable purposes, argued that there is no proof that a temple was ever destroyed to build the mosque. The board wanted restoration of the status quo as of 1992, where they had control over a portion of the land. The group of Hindu monks called Nirmohi Akhara, whose name translates to "Group Without Attachment," claimed the land in its entirety and asked for the right to build a temple there. The Ram Lalla Virajman claimed that the deity of Lord Ram had jurisdictional rights and as such its rights could not be divided and the entire piece of land should be handed over to the deity. For decades, Hindus and Muslims have fought over the right to pray on the site. Protests have been traced to as far back as the late 1800's. After India's independence from British colonial rule in 1947, multiple lawsuits claiming ownership and the right to pray have been filed in Uttar Pradesh court. The cases finally made their way to the Allahabad High Court in 2002 and to the Supreme Court in 2010. Ancient texts examined as proofExhaustive and complicated, the case became an archeological dispute as well as a religious and political one. The Archaeological Survey of India has submitted reports of digs in a quest to establish the veracity of the claim that the land was the birthplace of Lord Ram. The Hindu counsel argued that there is a structure beneath the demolished mosque and that excavated materials suggested it was a temple. Lawyers for the Muslim parties said there was no conclusive proof of a structure. Documents presented in court included ancient texts that purportedly have descriptions of the site. They included travelogues of an English merchant in 1611, Jesuit missionary in 1740-1770, and ancient HIndu religious texts such as the Skanda Purana -- a text that contains over 18,000 verses, which provides a description of Ayodhya as a holy city and pilgrimages to the site. Indian court to rule on Hindu-Muslim dispute over destroyed mosque - SaltWire Network Posted: 08 Nov 2019 11:04 PM PST By Mayank Bhardwaj NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Supreme Court is due to rule on Saturday on the ownership of a centuries-old religious site claimed by both majority Hindus and Muslims, a dispute that has cast a shadow of suspicion over the two communities for decades. Thousands of paramilitary force members and police have been deployed in the northern town of Ayodhya, where an ancient mosque was razed in 1992 by hardline Hindus who believe the site is the birthplace of Lord Ram, a physical incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. The destruction of the mosque triggered religious riots in which about 2,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed across the country and led to a series of court battles with various groups staking claim to the site. A final verdict will be delivered by a five-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the court said late on Friday. The verdict will decide the ownership of a plot of land of just 2.77 acres (1.1 hectares) that has been heavily protected since the 1992 clashes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party has long campaigned on a promise to support the construction of a Hindu temple on the site of the razed mosque. "It may seem to be just a piece of land but for us it is a pious place where our god was born," said a senior Hindu leader affiliated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party. "We hope the court rules in favor of the Hindus," said the leader, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue. Whichever way it goes, the court decision is likely to have a significant impact on fraught relations between India's Hindus and Muslims, who constitute 14% of its 1.3 billion people. The government has stepped up security not just in Ayodhya but in other communally sensitive areas and rapid action forces have been put on a high alert. For more than seven decades, right-wing Hindu campaigners have been pushing to build a temple on the site, which they believe was holy for Hindus, long before the Muslim Mughals, India's most prominent Islamic rulers, built what they called the Babri mosque there. A verdict in favor of building a Ram Temple at Ayodhya would be seen as a political victory for Modi, who won a second term in a landslide general election win this year. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh - parent organization of Modi's party - has decided against celebratory processions if the verdict goes in favor of the Hindus, to avoid provoking sectarian violence. Muslim organization's have appealed for calm to prevent communal flare-ups. Why Shares of Boeing Fell 10% in October - Motley Fool Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:54 PM PST What happenedShares of Boeing (NYSE:BA) dropped 10.7% in October, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, as the saga surrounding the company's grounded 737 MAX continued to weigh heavily on the company. The month ended with CEO Dennis Muilenburg being grilled by Congress, a sign of how deep Boeing's woes are at the moment. So whatBoeing has deservedly taken a lot of heat from regulators and the press in the months since an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed, killing all 157 people on board. It was the second fatal crash for Boeing's new 737 MAX in a matter of months and started a process of discovery that has at times portrayed the aerospace giant in a negative light. ![]() Image source: Boeing. The company mid-month reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.45 per share, missing analyst estimates, on revenue that at $19.98 billion was down 20% year over year. Investors had expected a weak quarter, but news reports suggesting Boeing employees misled the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about the safety system that eventually led to the grounding of the company's 737 MAX aircraft raised new concerns about management's credibility. Boeing investors were also treated to an onslaught of gripes from airlines including American Airlines Group, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines Holdings that have seen their schedules disrupted by the MAX issues and are likely to demand significant compensation from the manufacturer. As American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said during a post-earnings call with investors: "We're working to ensure that Boeing shareholders bear the cost of Boeing's failures, not American Airlines' shareholders." Now whatBoeing shares have made up about half of October's declines in the first week of November, and the company remains confident that the 737 MAX will be recertified in the months to come and be flying again by early 2020. Assuming so -- and that there are no further incidents -- it seems likely that the 737 MAX, despite all the 2019 headlines, will go on to be the best seller that analysts had originally predicted it to be. That said, Boeing shares are hardly on sale today, up 10% year to date despite the controversy, and the company has had a number of other embarrassing setbacks beyond the 737 MAX that has raised alarming questions about management's control of the portfolio. Boeing has a lot to prove before I'd recommend climbing on board. India Awaits Verdict on Ayodhya Site, Leaving Hindus and Muslims on Edge - The New York Times Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:44 PM PST Image ![]() India's Supreme Court will rule on Saturday on the ownership of the country's most disputed religious site, a decision that Hindus say will cement their status as leaders of this country, but which Muslims fear will relegate them to second class citizens. The highly anticipated ruling by a five-judge panel will decide whether the sliver of barren land — barely 3 acres — will go to Muslims to rebuild the Babri Mosque, or to Hindus who claim that the site was the birthplace of their revered god Ram. The court might also decide to split the land between them. The mosque in Ayodhya, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, was demolished by Hindu extremists in 1992, setting off riots across the country that killed around 2,000 people in some of the worst violence India had seen since its bloody partition in 1947. In place of the mosque, Hindus erected a tent resembling a temple that still stands and draws thousands of tourists every day. The mosque was built in the 1500s during the era of Mughal rule, a period of India's history that many right-wing Hindus believe serves as a reminder of their humiliation under Muslim occupation. By wiping away traces of the Babri Mosque and building a temple to Ram in its place, the status of India as a Hindu nation will be unquestionable, they say. Hindus represent 80 percent of India's population. Hindus from around the world have donated hundreds of bricks carved with the inscription "Sri Ram" in the hopes the court will rule in favor of building the temple. The bricks sit in a pile next to the contested site, ready to be fixed and shaped into a temple within hours if the Supreme Court rules in the Hindus' favor. "Post the independence of our country, we have erased all the symbols of British imperialism," said Ram Madhav, general secretary of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P. "The names of our roads have been changed, the statues of Queen Elizabeth and all of them have been removed." India should undergo a similar exorcism of symbols of Moghul rule, including the Babri Mosque, Mr. Madhav said, calling the 300-year reign of the Mughal Muslim emperors "cruel." "It's as simple as that," he said. "This is not about religion. We are not against any religion, India is one of the most religiously diverse places in the world." The B.J.P., the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has rose to power on a wave of Hindu nationalism, and restoring a temple to Ram in Ayodhya has become a central issue of its platform. The party's leaders deny that they have stirred an anti-Muslim fervor and insist that India is an inclusive nation that embraces it minorities. But B.J.P. officials have seldom condemned the lynchings of Muslims across the country, and some party members have been implicated in sectarian violence including the destruction of the mosque in 1992. A rush of Hindu pilgrims visited Ayodhya over the weekend ahead of the court's verdict. Sudarshan Jain and his family, pilgrims from Rajasthan, a state hundreds of miles away, visited an open air workshop where craftsmen chiseled floral designs and figurines of Ram on pink sandstone slabs that could form an eventual temple. The first floor of the would-be temple is ready to be fixed in place, the craftsmen said All they are waiting for is the Supreme Court ruling. "These are not stones but feelings of millions of Hindus," Mr. Jain said, "Now the dream is going to be a reality." Sitting inside the courtyard of his home in Ayodhya, Haji Mahboob Ahmad, a litigant who supports rebuilding the mosque, said if the court's rules in favor of a Hindu temple, Muslims will accept it. But he fears that right-wing Hindu forces will be emboldened and more mosques will be destroyed, cementing the feeling of many Muslims that they are slowly becoming second class citizens. "Violence against Muslims will rise and it will become institutionalized," said Mr. Ahmad, 75, who had to flee the town for a month after the mosque was demolished nearly 30 years ago. "Those people who say there is no fear; they are lying," he added. For decades, Mr. Ahmad said, living steps from the destroyed mosque felt like living in an open-air prison, because of the security around the neighborhood. "Now the issue should be solved forever and everyone should live in peace," he said. Ahead of Saturday's verdict, schools were shut and 4,000 security officers were deployed to the area. Rallies have been banned, shops barred from selling kerosene and people prevented from collecting bricks or stones. Social media was alight with anticipation and citizens and community leaders appealing for calm. Mr. Modi, on Twitter, appealed for calm in the wake of the verdict. "Whatever verdict is delivered by the Supreme Court will not be anyone's victory or loss," he wrote. "I appeal to my countrymen that everyone's priority should be that the verdict strengthens the great tradition of peace, unity and good will of India." If the Supreme Court rules in the Hindus favor on Ayodhya, it will hand Mr. Modi a major victory just six months after his party swept elections and he was granted a second term as prime minister. The ruling comes just three months after Mr. Modi's government achieved another key B.J.P. goal, when his government stripped the Muslim-majority state of Kashmir of its autonomy in August, increasing central government control over the territory, which Pakistan also claims. Many in the B.J.P. feel like Muslims and other minorities in India, including Christians, have been given a special status in India that has set them apart from their Hindu peers, creating a nation that has a tiered structure they would like to flatten. Hindu temples, for example, are controlled by the government, while Christians and Muslims control their own churches and mosques and can partly be governed by their own religious laws. "If the Supreme Court hands them a victory, all stars will have aligned in the B.J.P.'s favor," said Milan Vaishnav, the director of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's South Asia program. "There is short term fear about communal tensions," he said. "The soil is pretty fertile for conflict." Why the Boeing 737 will never take the place of the 757 - The Points Guy Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:14 PM PST I'm depressed. I'm depressed because the word on the street is that Boeing will not be moving forward with its so-called "new midsize airplane," or NMA, also known as the 797. That's the rumor, at any rate. If built, the 797 would bridge the range and capacity gap between the narrowbody 737 family and the much larger 787 and 777 families — a slot occupied by the now-geriatric 757 and 767. The concept was formally unveiled at the Paris Air Show two years ago, and the planemaker has been mulling it over ever since. The uncertainty around the project has become a simmering backstory to the ongoing 737 MAX saga. The two are not unrelated. Back about 15 years ago, Boeing had a decision to make. Its popular 757 was getting long in the tooth. Orders were drying up and the company would need to develop a replacement. This wouldn't be easy, because the 757 was, and still is, a very special machine. I may be biased, since I fly it, but you might undoubtedly call it the most versatile jetliner Boeing has ever built. It's a medium-capacity, high-performing plane able to turn a profit on both short and longer-haul routes — domestic or international, across the Mississippi or across the North Atlantic. And along the way it meets every operational challenge. Short runway? Stiff headwinds? Full payload? No problem. With 180 passengers, the plane can safely depart from a short runway, climb directly to cruise altitude, and fly clear across the country or the ocean. Nothing else can do that. And it's a great-looking plane to boot. ![]() Essentially three options were on the table. The first was to come up with a plane from scratch — a brand-new jetliner of roughly the 757's size and capabilities. A second, less expensive option would be to equip the existing airframe with new engines, modern avionics and other upgrades — a 757-X, if you will. Option three would be to abandon the 757 template altogether and, instead, turn to the company's favorite cash cow, the 737, and somehow push it, squeeze it, force it, into the role of the 757. Although Boeing hasn't — at least not yet — officially abandoned the idea of new airplane, it is option three, if only by default, that seems to have won. Production of the 757 ceased for good in 2004, and the 737 remains Boeing's only single-aisle replacement option. Need a 180-ish seater? If you're buying from Boeing, it's a 737 or nothing: the -800, the -900, or the beleaguered MAX. None of these, however, can do what the 757 does. The 737's range allows U.S. coast-to-coast and limited transatlantic city pairings, but anything further is out of the question. And what it can do, it doesn't do particularly well. On longer routes it's often payload and/or altitude restricted, meaning it can't take off with a full load or needs to stick to lower altitudes. And for a jet of its size it uses huge amounts of runway with startlingly high takeoff and landing speeds. I was jammed into the cockpit jumpseat — more of a jump-bench, actually — on an American Airlines 737-800 not long ago, flying from Los Angeles to Boston. Man, if we didn't need every foot of LAX's runway 25R, at last getting off the ground at a nearly supersonic 165 knots. What would it be like on the westbound leg, I wondered — a longer flight, from a shorter runway, in the face of winter headwinds? By contrast, I recently piloted a 757 from Boston to San Francisco. At flaps 20, we lifted off at a docile 130 knots from Logan's stubby, 7,000-foot runway 09, with nearly half the runway still remaining! With every seat full and seven hours' worth of fuel, we climbed directly to 36,000 feet and flew all the way to California. That's performance. A 737 cannot come close to that. In the 737, Boeing took what essentially was a regional jet — the original 737-100 first flew in 1967, and was intended to carry a hundred or so passengers on flights of around 400 miles — and has pushed, pushed, and pushed the plane into roles it was never intended for. Bigger and bigger engines, fancier avionics, MCAS. Five decades and 10 variants later, the MAX is a monsterized hybrid of a thing — a plane that wants, and needs to be something that it's not: all muscle and power and advanced technology, jammed into the framework of a 50-year-old design. From the other side of the Atlantic, meanwhile, the Airbus line features a similar gap. The A310 died away a long time ago, and size-wise there's nothing between the A320 family and the long-haul A330. Or is there? The biggest Airbus narrow-body is the A321 — a stretched-out version of the basic A320. Two upcoming variants, the A321LR (long range), and the A321XLR (extra long-range), are about to hit the market. With two-class seating for around 200 passengers and a range of almost 5,000 nautical miles, these aircraft have enormous potential. JetBlue is among airlines planning to use the LR on routes across the pond, serving Western Europe from New York and Boston. Whether you're an airline CEO, a pilot, or a passenger, there's a lot to like about the A320 family generally, certainly when matched against the 737. It requires less runway, for one, and uses tamer takeoff and landing speeds. On the inside it's quieter and more spacious. A few weeks ago I rode aboard a 737 for the first time in a while. I normally find myself on an A320 or A321, and I was startled at how uncomfortable the 737 was in comparison. I had a window seat about a third of the way down, and the narrower cross-section meant my shoulder was pressed into the sidewall the entire time, forcing me to sit at an angle. And the noise. The 737 is a loud airplane. On a two, three, or four-hour trip such comfort levels are acceptable. But six? How about a seven-hour nonstop from Gatwick or Shannon? And if you think it's noisy in the cabin, you should hear the cockpit, where the sound of the onrushing air must push 100 decibels. Loud and tight, with barely enough room for the crew's hand luggage. It's interesting how both the A320 and the 737 families have roughly the same exterior dimensions, yet somehow the A320's cockpit is three times roomier and five times quieter. How can that be? Well, look closely at the nose section of the 737. Do you recognize that? The old-fashioned flight deck windows, the shapes of the radome and fuselage? It's the 707. Unchanged in over 60 years. ![]() While we're at it, take a MAX and put it next to an old 737-100 from the late '60s. It's at once the same and yet completely different. You can virtually see the airplane straining, stretching, reaching — trying so hard to become something else. And therein is the problem. Boeing desires the commonality, the simpler training footprint and all the good things that the 737 family offers. But it also wants a plane that can take 200 people across the ocean. What it's finding out is that perhaps, after all, they cannot be the same thing. You can only reinvent so many times. ![]() ![]() Indeed the A321LR will be the closest thing out there to a 757. Comfort-wise it'll be equal, if not superior, with almost the range, almost the capacity, and almost the muscle. Sure, those are a lot of important almosts. Eventually, however, the last 757 will be put to pasture, and when that happens, the lack of a 797 all but assures the A321's domination of the mid-market niche. Until that day, U.S. carriers continue holding on to their 757s. Hundreds remain in service on trunk routes and transcons. American, United and Delta fly 757s from their East Coast gateways on eight-hour services to Western Europe, Scandinavia, even Africa. Of course, you'll also see it on 60-minute segments into Kansas City, Cleveland, Tucson and Tampa. Nothing can match it across such a wide swath of markets, with little or no concerns as to weather, payload or runway length. As to its relunctance in committing to the 797, Boeing says that the sales potential for such a plane, estimated at anywhere from 300 to 1,000 units, is possibly too limited. As a point of comparison, the company claims that it won't break even on its 787 program until at least 1,500 aircraft have been delivered. If true, that's a sad testament to how expensive it has become to develop new aircraft. If 1,000 airplanes can't justify a new line, what can? Still, it seems that filling such a niche should be well within the technical expertise, and certainly the imagination, of the world's largest and most prolific plane-maker. Wouldn't the 797 borrow much of the 787's architecture, and thus be cheaper to produce? And isn't this the same company that, 50 years ago, created the 747, an airplane more than double the size of any existing plane, taking it from a napkin drawing to an actual, in-the-air prototype in less than two years! Forgive me for looking at this romantically, but what happened to that sprit and vision? And if Boeing does press ahead with the 797, will they build the right plane? Preliminary renderings of the NMA from 2017 show us a jetliner seating between 220 and 270 passengers, with a composite fuselage and wings, and a range of around 5,000 nautical miles. Is it just me, or is this much too big? I like the twin-aisle idea; two aisles make for faster boarding and deplaning, and give the cabin a roomier feel overall. But, otherwise, how is this not just a 787 with a shorter range? A 757 replacement should be a plane that tops out at around 220 passengers, not one that starts there. "It strikes me that the airplane Boeing ought to be putting out there is one that already exists, at least as a template," I wrote on my website about a year ago. I was talking about the 767, Boeing's venerable quasi-widebody that dates to the early 1980s. Although a passenger version hasn't been ordered in years, the jet remains in production as a freighter and as a military midair refueler. Why not upgrade it, I asked in my article, with new engines, a new cockpit, and overhauled internal systems? Is that not a better option, especially considering the limited market that Boeing sees, than spending billions on an all-new airframe? "Call it the 767-X," I wrote. ![]() Well, in October Boeing released a proposal for a 767 derivative called, guess what, the 767-X. However, the 767 I had in mind as a baseline was the original -200. The -200, which debuted in 1982, is a long-since obsolete aircraft that, by today's standards, would be laughably uneconomical. In terms of size, range, and capacity, however, it'd be just about perfect. Imagine a modernized, re-engined version delivering twin-aisle comfort for 180-200 people, containerized luggage and cargo, and all the range and unbeatable brawn of the 757. What's not to like? Boeing, though, says the -X would build not on the platform of the -200, but on that of the -400, and would be aimed at the cargo market. The -400, which sold very poorly, has seats for around 250 people. Again, this is too big. In any case, Boeing eyes the 767-X chiefly as a freighter, not a passenger carrier. Which leaves us… where? While Boeing makes up its mind, the 737 MAX drama continues at center stage. And here's the part we hate to ask but need to: Why did the MAX need to exist in the first place? What if, back in 2004, Boeing had gone ahead with the 797 in lieu of yet bigger and heavier 737s? And were the MAX tragedies, on some deep-down level, an inevitable result of Boeing's decades-long obsession with its 737 — its determination to keep the production line going, variant after variant, seemingly forever? Where in the blame pie does poor corporate strategy and stubborness fall? There's a place for the 737 and always will be. I just don't know if that place is as far and wide as Boeing would like it to be. And although you won't see it any reports, but what happened in Africa and Indonesia is, maybe, fate's way of telling Boeing that the time has come to move on. The Latest: Sam Rainsy affirms determination to return home - Manistee News Advocate Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:14 PM PST
Cambodia's most prominent opposition politician Sam Rainsy, co-founder of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, poses in Paris, Thursday Nov.7, 2019 before heading to Paris airport and flying to Bangkok. Sam Rainsy said Tuesday he was ready to risk imprisonment or death by returning to his country from self-imposed exile to unseat the country's longtime ruler. less Cambodia's most prominent opposition politician Sam Rainsy, co-founder of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, poses in Paris, Thursday Nov.7, 2019 before heading to Paris airport and flying to Bangkok. Sam ... more Photo: Nicolas Garriga, AP KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The Latest on the attempted return of opposition politicians to Cambodia (all times local): 8:15 p.m. Exiled Cambodian opposition politician Sam Rainsy has made an online broadcast affirming his determination to return home to lead a movement to oust the long-serving leader, despite being stopped from boarding a plane from Paris to Bangkok, from where he planned to cross into Cambodia on Saturday. He said on Facebook Live that he and fellow leaders of his banned Cambodia National Rescue Party have not changed their plans for a return, which is opposed by their political foe, Prime Minister Hun Sen. Sam Rainsy advised his 4.8 million Facebook followers not to be disappointed, and accused Hun Sen of being scared to allow him to return. Thailand has barred Sam Rainsy's entry and Malaysia has limited the freedom of movement of his party members at the apparent request of Cambodia. Sam Rainsy said party leaders are seeking another way to make their return. ___ 6:30 p.m. A Thai Airways employee says exiled Cambodian opposition politician Sam Rainsy was not allowed to board a flight from Paris to Bangkok because his booking was not valid. Sam Rainsy had vowed to return from exile in France to Cambodia on Saturday to lead a movement to force long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen from office. The employee of the Thai flag carrier at Paris' Charles De Gaulle Airport, who answered a telephone call but declined to give his name, said a valid ticket had not been issued in Sam Rainsy's name and the economy class section for Thursday's flight was full. He said a booking in Sam Rainsy's name had been made for a new flight on Saturday. Sam Rainsy had posted a photo on his Facebook page of what he said was his ticket which showed he had a confirmed booking for the Thursday flight. The photo also showed his booking reference and ticket number, opening the possibility that it could be changed online by a third party. He told reporters at the airport that Thai Airways "said they had received from very high up the instruction to not allow me to board." Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Wednesday that Sam Rainsy would not be allowed to enter Thailand. ___ 6:15 p.m. A Malaysian rights commissioner says the government will release senior Cambodian opposition official Mu Sochua and two other activists. Human Rights Commission member Jerald Joseph says authorities are preparing the papers and will allow Mu Sochua and two youth activists from her outlawed Cambodia National Rescue Party to remain in the country. He didn't give further details. Mu Sochua was detained Wednesday night and the other two on Monday. The release was surprising because Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad earlier said Malaysian doesn't want to be used as a base for political activists. A member of the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, Teddy Baguilat, welcomed their release and urged Thailand to follow Malaysia's example by allowing the Cambodian party's leader, Sam Rainsy, to enter Thailand. He said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen "should get the message loud and clear that his persecution of the political opposition will not be exported wherever he wishes it to be." ___ 6 p.m. Cambodia's most prominent opposition leader, Sam Rainsy, says he was not allowed to board a Thai Airways flight from Paris to Bangkok in his attempt to return home from self-imposed exile to challenge his country's longtime leader. Sam Rainsy told reporters on Thursday at Charles De Gaulle Airport that the Thai flag carrier "said they had received from very high up the instruction to not allow me to board." Sam Rainsy, who has been living in France, says he's ready to risk imprisonment or death by returning to Cambodia to unseat Prime Minister Hun Sen, an autocratic leader who has clamped down on opposition. He said his travel has been blocked by "Hun Sen, the Cambodian dictator who has asked to put pressure on neighboring countries to block my return to Cambodia." Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Wednesday that Sam Rainsy would not be allowed to enter Thailand. ___ 5 p.m. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia doesn't want to be used as a base for political activists from the region, after the No. 2 official of a banned Cambodian opposition party was detained at the airport as she and other exiles planned a return to their homeland in a challenge to an autocratic leader. Mahathir's stand mirrored that of Thailand, which this week also barred the Cambodian opposition officials from transiting through the country. They said they want to spark a popular movement to oust long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has clamped down on his opponents. Cambodian officials have repeatedly warned that if the opposition leaders did make it back, they would immediately be arrested. Most if not all have convictions or charges pending against them, including inciting armed rebellion despite their avowedly nonviolent intentions. Roman Polanski accused of raping French actress Valentine Monnier in 1975 - CBS News Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:08 PM PST ![]() A French woman in her early 60s has claimed she was violently raped at age 18 by Oscar-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski. In a Friday story published in the French newspaper Le Parisien, the woman claimed that Polanski raped her in 1975 at his skiing chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland. Polanski's lawyer, Hervé Temime, told Le Parisien the 86-year-old Polanski "firmly contests" the allegation. Temime could not be immediately reached by The Associated Press. Polanski's accuser, Valentine Monnier, told the French newspaper that the impending release of Polanski's latest film "J'accuse" ("An Officer and a Spy") prompted her to speak out. AP does not normally disclose the identities of alleged rape victims, but Monnier gave her consent to be identified by Le Parisien after she contacted the paper in mid-September. The paper said she had previously written letters to the Los Angeles police, French first lady Brigitte Macron, and others. One of several who responded was Marlène Schiappa, France's junior minister for gender equality, who noted the case was too old for judicial action. Trending NewsPolanski has been living in France ever since he fled the United States in 1978, to avoid sentencing after pleading guilty to the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. The statute of limitations in France for rape is 20 years. "Rape is a time bomb," Monnier, an actress and former model, told Le Parisien. "The memory does not fade. It becomes a ghost and it follows you, and it changes you insidiously." "I denounce this crime knowing that there can't be any punishment, in an attempt to end exceptions, impunity. Public figures are being considered as models. By idolizing the guilty ones, we prevent people from realizing the serious consequences of their acts," she continued, according to a translation from Variety. Monnier, now 62, told the newspaper that the alleged episode occurred when a friend invited her to go skiing and stay in Polanski's chalet. "I had no links with him," Monnier said, according to The Guardian. "Neither personal nor professional, and hardly knew him." According to Monnier, after a night run down the slopes, she and Polanski returned to the chalet. She said that he called her up to his room after dinner, and that when she arrived, he was nude. She said he struck her, disrobed her, tried to make her swallow a pill and raped her. Monnier said she feared for her life because "he can't take the risk that this becomes known." But he also apologized immediately afterwards and cried, Le Parisien quoted her as saying. Monnier said she "took refuge" with an acquaintance of Polanski — and contacted him for the first time a month ago, Le Parisien reported. The newspaper met with the man, who asked to remain anonymous, in his lawyer's office. "I asked Valentine if she wanted to go to the police ... In shock, she didn't know what to do," the paper quoted the man as saying. He said he believed her story. Another man contacted by Monnier and by Le Parisien, former movie producer John Bentley, said he remembered her well, according to the paper. But he also said he not recall her saying that she had been raped, "or I would have done something." Monnier said publicity surrounding the film revived the "traumatic memory" of her encounter with Polanski. In particular, she took issue with Polanski comparing himself in an interview to Alfred Dreyfus — the historical subject of "An Officer and a Spy," who was falsely accused of spying — to what he has been subjected to over the American case. "Is this tenable, under the pretext of a film, the cover of history to hear 'I accuse' from the man who marked you like with iron when it is forbidden for you, the victim, to accuse him?" the paper quoted Monnier as saying. "An Officer and a Spy" premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August, and is scheduled to be released in France next week. Monnier is the fourth woman to accuse Polanski of sexual assault since the initial statutory rape claim. In 2017, Polanski was accused of raping former German actress Renate Langer in Gstaad in 1972, when she was 15. REUTERS/Willy Kurniawan KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia is looking for a third country to send detained Cambodian opposition leader Mu Sochua to, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told reporters on Thursday. Malaysian immigration authorities detained Sochua after Cambodia sought her arrest on the grounds that she and other self-exiled opposition leaders were plotting a coup in trying to return home. "Our principle, in ASEAN in particular, generally is that we don't interfere in the internal affairs of other countries," Mahathir said referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Alisson: Liverpool don't want repeat of last season - Goal.com Posted: 08 Nov 2019 09:16 PM PST ![]() Alisson said Liverpool wanted to avoid a repeat of last season as he talked up the significance of Sunday's clash against Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions head to Anfield trailing Liverpool by six points through 11 games this campaign, while the Reds remain unbeaten in league play with just one draw coming against Manchester United. City claimed the title last season, finishing a point clear of Liverpool despite Jurgen Klopp's men losing just one game, a loss that came against the eventual champions. The Brazilian said Liverpool had no interest in experiencing that again, eager to go one better in 2019-20 and claim the Premier League title after falling just short during last season's push. "We don't want to feel how we felt last season," the goalkeeper told The Guardian . "Being second by just one point – and we don't know which game made us lose the title because we had a few draws where we could have done better, and we had the loss away to Man City when we could have won or drawn – means we know that we need to give everything in every game if we want to become Premier League champions. "We want it and we will try to do it." Liverpool have won 10 of their opening 11 Premier League games to open up an early lead at the top. Alisson knows how important Sunday's encounter is as the European champions try to surge further clear. "Last season we had a great experience, an almost perfect season," the Brazil international said. "We lost one game and that one game was against City. We know how big this game is for us. "We know how big the game is for everyone – for them and for our fans. In the end it is just three more important points but Manchester City have been the best team in the league for the last few years so we need to give everything to win this game." Liverpool enter Friday's match having topped Genk 2-1 midweek in the Champions League, while Manchester City settled for a 1-1 draw with Atalanta in a match that saw Kyle Walker play in goal following an Ederson injury and Claudio Bravo red card. Actress who sat on Harvey Weinstein's lap denies romance - Page Six Posted: 08 Nov 2019 09:13 PM PST Harvey Weinstein apparently has a #MeToo safe space in Soho. The disgraced movie mogul was surrounded by fawning fans at an exclusive nightclub event — including a sexy actress who sat on his lap several times and gave him adoring looks as she serenaded the crowd. New Jersey-born actress Alexandra Vino, 30, was seen dancing seductively for the accused sex creep throughout the Thursday soiree at Cipriani's exclusive upstairs lounge Socialista on West Broadway. A Post reporter saw the 30-year-old movie-star wannabe repeatedly sit on the fallen film mogul's lap and put her arms around him throughout the night. ![]() Weinstein, 67, gawked at Vino and singer Helga Rose as the women, accompanied by a small brass band, performed "Billie Jean" and "These Boots are Made for Walkin' " into the early hours. On Friday, Vino and Weinstein denied being romantically involved, with Vino telling The Post she met him just three months ago and they were only friends. The Middletown, NJ, native, who now lives in California, most recently had a bit part in the 2018 Mark Wahlberg film "Mile 22." Weinstein also denied they were together — and even insisted that she was even not on his lap the night before but was only sitting on the arm of his chair. "She is not canoodling me!" he told The Post. Socialista was once located on West Street and is the same lounge where Weinstein allegedly masturbated in front of a woman more than a decade ago. It closed and has now reopened three nights a week at Cipriani. Despite the serious nature of the allegations against him, Weinstein was treated like royalty at the club on Thursday night — with several patrons approaching him to offer compliments. "I love your movies," one man told Weinstein. Others shook his hand and rubbed his shoulder as he enjoyed the evening in the chic lounge styled after pre-revolutionary Cuba. ![]() As for Vino — who sources said met the fallen producer through Rose — a source close to Weinstein told The Post that the two dated for several weeks in 2018, despite their denials that they were ever an item. Weinstein's most recent appearance comes just weeks after an actress who spotted him at a party in Alphabet City ripped into him. "I'm going to stand four feet from a f–king rapist? And nobody's going to say anything?" actress Zoe Stuckless shouted at Downtime Bar when she saw the shamed mogul. Weinstein is set to stand trial in Manhattan Supreme Court in January on charges he sexually assaulted two women in 2006 and 2013 and could face life in prison. Posted: 08 Nov 2019 08:21 PM PST ANN ARBOR, MICH. – For the second Friday night in a row, the Gophers got a goal in a 3-on-3 overtime for an extra point in the Big Ten standings. This time Jaxon Nelson was the hero. The freshman forward from Luverne got behind the Michigan defense and roofed a backhand shot over Wolverines goalie Strauss Mann for the 2-1 final score. Officially, though, the game will count as a tie. "[Nelson] had been coming on," Gophers coach Bob Motzko said on a Big Ten Network postgame interview. "… That was a great play." "We were good tonight until the third period. We got nervous. We had freshman turn the puck over. We had to kill a lot of penalties, and they finally stuck one in." Junior goalie Jack LaFontaine, who started his college career with two seasons at Michigan, got the win for the Gophers (3-4-2, 0-1-2-2 Big Ten) by making a season-high 33 saves. He held the Wolverines scoreless on six power plays. Brandon McManus gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead with 57 seconds left in the second period. It was his third goal of the season. Michigan (3-4-2, 0-2-1) tied the score on Jacob Hayhurst's backdoor goal at 8:36 of the third. Last weekend the Gophers, playing at home, went to a second overtime with Notre Dame before Scott Reedy's goal for a 3-2 final score. Recruiters weigh in on the pros and cons of mobile job applications - North Bay Business Journal Posted: 08 Nov 2019 07:42 PM PST Back in the last century, jobseekers anxiously awaited the Sunday paper for its massive classified ads section with the hope of spotting a great job and being the first to apply. Nowadays, job opportunities pop-up 24/7 in real time, sans newspapers, courtesy of modern technology. "In today's market, employers need to appeal to their candidate pools and find ways to encourage people to apply – the more convenient, the better the chance an applicant will apply," said Karen Alary, managing partner at the Personnel Perspective in Santa Rosa. "Conversely, the more complex, the less likely an applicant will complete the process." That fact isn't lost on BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., a global biotechnology firm headquartered in San Rafael. "The challenge is on the employer's side and our need to adapt," said Amy Wireman, group vice president of Human Resources, who commented based on feedback from BioMarin's talent acquisition team. "To remain competitive, employers must optimize their websites with the mobile user in mind — for example, allowing for job postings to be easily read on a device that is a fraction of the size of a desktop monitor or laptop screen, or allowing job applications to be completed in a few simple key strokes." BioMarin reports seeing a rise in mobile applications, but notes jobseekers using a desktop or laptop still outpace mobile by 2-to-1. Those applying for jobs using their smartphones aren't limited to Millennials, as some might presume. "Millennials — and now Gen Zs, as well — grew up with smartphone in-hand so it comes naturally to those groups of our workforce," Alary noted. "However, the other generations use the technology just as effectively." One of the biggest factors for businesses in the mobile-application sphere is they must be able to comply with Equal Employment Opportunity Council requirements, according to Santa Rosa-based Keysight Technologies. "Employers must balance capturing legally required application information with the "ease of use" mobile experience of the jobseeker," said Mark Bajan, head of talent acquisition, America's Region, Keysight Technologies, Inc. "This is easier said than done due to various mobile-device platforms, restrictions of the company's recruiting-system provider, poorly implemented or tested recruiting systems, and the need for easy-apply applications that load a resume into the employer's ATS (applicant tracking system)." Overall, Bajan said recruiting through mobile devices can be "very effective" in capturing qualified candidates — and often easier for the candidate — but it hasn't changed the way experienced recruiters go about their work. In fact, in some ways, it makes a recruiter's work more complex. "For example, a one-click apply feature to multiple jobs may result in an increase in applicants, but it still requires significant time for a recruiter to review more candidates. You would think this would be a nice problem to have, but imagine you're a recruiter with 30-plus active jobs to fill," he said. "Now instead of having to review 10 candidates per week per job, you're flooded with 50 to 100 candidates, per requisition, every week. The time needed to do an initial resume screen goes way up, limiting recruiter productivity." Some of these issues can be resolved with various application-assessment tools, he added. Mobile devices can help recruiters in other ways, according to Nicole Serres, president of Petaluma-based Star Staffing. "Smartphones allow us to connect with passive candidates and keep a relationship going," she said. "Knowing that 90% of adults have phones and are accessing them throughout the day, a great amount of time is spent around executing an online-recruitment strategy." As such, Star Staffing has a dedicated role for social media to engage with candidates, she said. And if you think mobile devices are the end of the technology road for recruiting, think again. McDonald's has reportedly launched "McDonald's Apply Thru," which works on Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, according to reporting this week from the Society for Human Resource Management, a professional HR-membership association headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Enhancing Veteran Lives Through Mobile Connectivity - Forbes Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:12 PM PST Every time I interact with a veteran, two thoughts enter my mind. The first is the memory of my grandfather and personal hero, First Sergeant John Katz – a Hungarian immigrant who entered the country through Ellis Island and enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in 1942. He was 32 years old. A trooper in the 17th Airborne Division, 194th Glider Infantry Regiment, my grandfather fought on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge and later dropped behind enemy lines in Western Germany as part of Operation Varsity. His unit drove eastward into the heart of Nazi Germany and didn't stop fighting until victory in Europe was secured. The courage he and his fellow troopers had—volunteering to risk their lives to create a more just and peaceful world—is unfathomable to me. And then I think about how much we owe our veterans and their families, and how we should be doing more to support them. ![]() So much of what empowers us in our daily lives is a direct result of the selfless sacrifice of our servicewomen and men. GETTYCollectively and individually, Americans have incredible access to opportunity: more quality schools, more career choices, more ways to be a successful entrepreneur. And yet, it's easy to forget where those opportunities come from. So much of what empowers us in our daily lives is a direct result of the selfless sacrifice of our servicewomen and men. As a proud grandson of a war hero, I'm lucky enough to work for a company that truly values service and recognizes that no service is more noble than the sacrifices made by those in our armed forces. At T-Mobile, we stand ready to serve those who serve us and actively look for ways to champion military members and their families in meaningful ways. Fostering a community for veterans and allies We have an amazing culture that starts on the inside and is reflected outward in the way we do business. Our Diversity and Inclusion networks include a Veterans and Allies Network (VAN) with over 11,000 members across the country. VAN's #MobilizeforService mission is to raise awareness around veteran culture, highlight the positive impact veterans have on the business, and showcase how veterans' values of respect, integrity, loyalty, and honor are shared by T-Mobile. T-Mobile has also learned from experience just how valuable it is to have veterans as part of our employee base, which is why we've pledged to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by 2023. Each new hire that gets us closer to fulfilling that goal is a win-win. Redefining healthcare at the Department of Veteran Affairs As the leader of T-Mobile's business-to-business enterprise, it's my responsibility and privilege to provide private and public organizations alike the mobile solutions they need to enhance the lives of their employees and customers. Health care is a universal need, and no population should ever have to worry about receiving quality care, especially our veterans. So when the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) approached T-Mobile to support their mission to provide the best possible care to their customers, we jumped at the chance. One-third of the 18.2 million veterans in the U.S. live in rural areas where access to health care isn't always easy. Thanks to VA Video Connect and T-Mobile's strong nationwide network, veterans can now speak to their doctors from virtually anywhere and get the advanced telehealth services they need without it counting against their data. The VA had over 1 million telehealth video encounters in 2018, making it one of the largest connected care networks in the country. It's a huge success story that demonstrates the possibilities that new technology, like 5G connectivity, can unlock—from pacemakers providing cardiologists with real-time data to temporary sensors on patients recovering post-surgery. Helping military families save money In April 2018, we launched a plan to help military families make ends meet—prompting the rest of the industry to follow suit. The Magenta Military plan has spurred massive savings for our country's military and veterans and delivers one of the biggest discounts ever for active duty military, veterans, and their families. By offering them half-off lines, the Un-carrier is potentially saving them over $1 billion every year. Paving a path for veterans in education Once their military service comes to an end, many veterans, regardless of age, turn to the classroom to fulfill the next chapter of their lives and careers. That's why, in 2013, T-Mobile began partnering with the City University of New York's John Jay College of Criminal Justice to support the school's graduating veterans. We've donated $75,000 in scholarships and awards to veteran students, as well as equipped them with tablets and services to assist them in their studies. November is Military Family Month, and it's fitting that the month includes both Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day. The women and men who have served our country have ensured we have plenty to be thankful for. I am continually inspired by the strength and courage of my grandfather and veterans like him, and I'll forever be grateful for their service. I hope that as a society, as organizations and businesses, and as individuals, we will do more to thank them, find meaningful ways to enhance their lives, and welcome their values into our everyday lives. Death Stranding’s weird gameplay has people interested, at least - SlashGear Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:04 PM PST Death Stranding is out today, and if you're still not sure what to make of it now that the reviews have landed and the dust has settled a bit, you probably aren't alone. The latest from Hideo Kojima is definitely a weird one, but the seems to be working in the game's favor. That's because – at the time of this writing, at least – Death Stranding is the most-watched game on Twitch and it isn't even close. Looking at the image below, you'll see that Death Stranding currently has 245,000 viewers on Twitch, enough to put it comfortably in first place. League of Legends, one of the most consistently popular games on Twitch, is in second place with 133,000 viewers at the moment. Obviously, these numbers fluctuate frequently, but the point is that the gaming public seems pretty interested in checking out what Death Stranding is laying down. ![]() This interest may have been sparked by the numerous Death Stranding reviews, many of which seem to be positive. The game is currently holding down a metascore of 83, with an impressive 67 reviews marked as positive, 13 marked as mixed, and two marked as negative. The user reviews are much more divided, numbering over 900 at the moment with nearly as many negative reviews as there are positive reviews. It's interesting that there are so many user reviews for the game on launch day, but putting that aside, the general reaction from consumers seems to plug Death Stranding as a "love it or hate it" type of game. Then there's also the fact that it's been difficult to get a handle on what Death Stranding is really about, which is something that pre-release marketing didn't clear up at all. So, with all of that in mind, it's no wonder that Death Stranding has found a lot of popularity on Twitch. Since Death Stranding is a mostly single-player experience, it probably won't keep this level of viewership up for a long time, but here on launch day, there are clearly a lot of people interested in seeing what this game has to offer. Roman Polanski Accused of Violently Raping French Actress in 1975 - E! NEWS Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:38 PM PST ![]() Andreas Rentz/Getty Images A French woman is accusing Roman Polanskiof violently raping her when she was an 18-year-old actress. The actress, who is named Valentine Monnier, tells Le Parisien about the alleged assault in an interview published on Friday. "In 1975, I was raped by Roman Polanski," she claims in a statement to Le Parisien, which has been translated from French. "I had no connection to him, personal or professional, and barely knew him. This was an extreme act of violence, after we went skiing at his chalet in Gstaad. He hit me, ripped off my clothes until I surrendered, and made me submit to a number of unpleasant acts. I had just turned 18 years old." Le Parisien reports they were able to corroborate her story with several individuals, who she told about the alleged attack in the days after. It's been nearly 45-years since the alleged rape took place, but Valentine says she only recently felt the need to share her story after finding out the director's film J'Accuse will be released in French theaters next week. "Rape is a time bomb. The memory does not fade. It becomes a ghost and it follows you, and it changes you insidiously," she shares with the publication. Polanski denies all allegations of rape and abuse. In a statement, his lawyer Hervé Temime said, "Roman Polanski strongly denies all accusation of rape. On a personal note, I can't help but add that the alleged action took place 40 years ago. That they were never, throughout all these long years, brought to the attention of a judiciary authority or to Mr. Polanski. Under these conditions, I strongly protest the release, on the eve of the film's release, of these accusations." The Polish director stands accused of rape on three separate occasions, all of which he denies, and currently lives in exile in France, where he's evaded U.S. authorities for over 45-years.
