Matt Dumba's overtime goal gives Wild a victory over Chicago - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 12:06 AM PST

Matt Dumba's season bottomed out mid-December in Chicago, a disastrous night that continued a baffling downswing for the defenseman who showed up at training camp looking like he could be the team's MVP.

He was on the ice for four Blackhawks goals, including the game-winner that clipped his arm before flying into the net, and he had his minutes slashed after getting demoted in the lineup. Dumba was also fighting the puck offensively, knee-deep in a goal drought that was swallowing him up like quicksand.

"You go through the video [Tuesday] morning, and it kind of brings back memories of that game," Dumba said. "It was just how it was going."

But on Tuesday night during the rematch in front of 17,341 at Xcel Energy Center, Dumba got a chance at redemption and he took advantage — scoring his first goal in 34 games in overtime to lift the Wild to a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks that helped the team's dicey playoff push and showed just how much Dumba has progressed since that low point in a 5-3 loss almost two months ago.

"I don't know how to describe it," Dumba said after burrowing out of the postgame celebration that fanned around him. "Obviously, it was good scoring in OT but it'd kind of been a long time coming. This feels good. I was trying not to think about it but now getting it, yeah, it felt awesome."

After jumping onto the ice, Dumba took a Mats Zuccarello pass to the net and although he tried to stuff the puck five-hole, an errant stick sent the shot sailing over goalie Corey Crawford 2 minutes, 21 seconds into the extra frame.

"The last four games he's really settled into being the guy that we know he can be," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "That's a real positive sign."

Not only was Dumba's fourth goal of the season his first since Nov. 12, but it was also his fifth career overtime tally — tying captain Mikko Koivu and Brent Burns for the most in team history.

"Everyone goes through those droughts at one point or another, and I'm glad I have great teammates around me, good staff," said Dumba, who returned this season from a torn pectoral muscle that sidelined him for most of 2018-19. "Everyone kind of pushed me through that to get where I am now."

Dumba's goal also halted a late-game Blackhawks rally that smuggled control away from the Wild after it was leading by a pair after two.

At 3:53 of the second, Kevin Fiala converted on a rising shot from the slot for his first goal in nine games.

Later in the period, Fiala scored again — this time on the power play — to notch his fourth vs. Chicago this season. The Wild ended up going 1-for-2 with the man advantage, while its penalty kill was airtight for only the second time in 12 games after going 3-for-3.

But the Blackhawks, who are ahead in the standings, asterisked the Wild's strong start with two shots through traffic in the third: from Adam Boqvist (6:23) and Olli Maatta (16:50).

"You can only control them for so long," said goalie Alex Stalock, who was sharp and played the entire game despite getting kneed in the head in the first period. He finished with 27 saves, while Crawford had 31.

And although the Wild surrendered one point to Chicago, it did gain some traction in the standings — moving six points out of the second wild-card seed in the Western Conference after starting the day seven back.

That's what's also different from now and December: Dumba is reemerging when the stakes are much higher.

"I'm really looking forward to what we have ahead," Dumba said, "and everyone's excited here."

Indonesian investigates deaths of hundreds of pigs in Bali - Reuters

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 11:31 PM PST

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian authorities are investigating the deaths of about 880 pigs on the island of Bali, the director of animal health at the Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday, to determine if they died of African swine fever (ASF).

The pigs died between December and January. ASF has killed more than 43,000 pigs in Indonesia's North Sumatra province, forcing the government to isolate affected areas, but there has been no confirmed outbreak on Bali.

"We are working to stop the deaths of pigs with operational standards for infectious animal diseases such as for the ASF and hog cholera, while we determine whether the cause was truly ASF or something else," Fadjar Sumping Tjatur Rassa, the director of animal health, told Reuters in a text message.

ASF has swept across China since being first detected there in August last year, slashing the world's top pig herd by more than 40%.

China in December banned imports of pigs, wild boars and related products from Indonesia due to ASF.

Meat and meat products are not allowed to leave the areas affected in North Sumatra, and people who have been in contact with infected animals must go through bio-security screening.

Wuhan coronavirus: China marks another deadly day as new outbreaks hit Hong Kong and Japan - CNN

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 11:01 PM PST

As of Wednesday morning, the number of deaths from the virus stood at 492, an increase of 67 from the previous day, including a second death outside of mainland China.
The number of confirmed cases grew to 24,536 worldwide, an increase of almost 4,000, or around 20%. The majority of cases are still centralized in Hubei, the Chinese province of which Wuhan is the capital, where more than 12,600 people remain in hospital.
China's National Health Commission said Tuesday that the death rate from the virus stands at 2.1% nationwide. The figure is higher for Hubei, at 3.1%. A spokeswoman for the commission said 80% of victims were over the age of 60 and 75% had some form of underlying condition.
Outside mainland China, concern is growing in Hong Kong, which has sealed off most of its border crossings. The semi-autonomous Chinese city reported its first death from the virus on Tuesday, as authorities also confirmed three "local infection cases," who had not recently returned from China.
Authorities said an ongoing strike by healthcare workers has had a "serious impact on services." Unions have demanded that the border be fully closed and extra support provided for frontline staff before they will end their walkout action -- though most doctors and nurses continue to work.
Anyone who had close contact with the new cases has been placed under quarantine, Hong Kong health authorities said.
Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Hong Kong health authority's communicable disease branch, told reporters Tuesday the new cases showed "there could be invisible chains of infection happening within communities."
"We are not ruling out a large spread (of the virus) in the future," she said.

Cruise ship quarantined

Also under quarantine are the passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, currently sitting in Yokohama Bay, south of Tokyo. Ten people on board have been confirmed to have the virus, and were being taken to the hospital, as authorities waited for test results of other passengers.
There are 2,666 guests and 1,045 crew members on board the ship, owner Princess Cruises said in a statement.
The ship has been held at the Japanese harbor since early Tuesday, after the virus was detected in a Hong Kong man who had previously disembarked from the cruise.
Cruise ships can become hotbeds for viral infections, typically norovirus and other gastrointestinal bugs -- this time last year, a cruise in the Caribbean had to return to port early after more than 400 passengers got sick.
"Commercial maritime travel is characterized by the movement of large numbers of people in closed and semi-closed settings," according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). "Like other close-contact environments, these settings can facilitate the transmission of influenza viruses and other respiratory viruses from person to person through droplet spread or potentially through contact with contaminated surfaces."
As the Yokohama ship remains under quarantine and testing, attention will turn to other vessels in the region. Hong Kong is a major cruise ship terminal, with routes to much of southeast Asia, Taiwan and Japan.

Where is Xi?

With at least three cities in China reporting more than a thousand cases, there are signs that the stringent controls put in place to try and contain the virus may not be working.
In a front page editorial Tuesday, the People's Daily -- the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party -- called for a "people's war" against the virus, adding that people should "more closely rally around the CCP with comrade Xi Jinping as the core."
Xi himself, however, has been missing in recent days, not appearing on front pages or in the nightly newscast on state broadcaster CCTV. This is extremely unusual for the Chinese leader, who typically dominates media coverage even when his activities are relatively routine.
His disappearance has led to a great deal of speculation in China and abroad. However, due to the opaque nature of the Communist Party's internal politics, it is difficult to do much more than speculate as the likely reason. Even though he has not been appearing, Xi's name continues to feature in state media coverage, which has emphasized his role in chairing meetings related to the virus and overseeing relief and containment methods.

Treatment methods

With fear of the virus -- and reported cases -- growing worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday urged governments not to impose travel and trade restrictions, though many already have.
"We reiterate our call to all countries not to impose restrictions that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade. Such restrictions can have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Tuesday during a briefing to the UN's executive board in Geneva.
"Where such measures have been implemented, we urge that they are short in duration, proportionate to the public health risks, and are reconsidered regularly as the situation evolves," he added.
He also called on member states to "facilitate rapid collaboration between the public and private sectors to develop the diagnostics, medicines and vaccines," in order to bring the outbreak under control.
Those efforts are under way globally, with slow progress being made both on treatment methods and vaccines. The lack of both throughout this outbreak is one factor which makes it far scarier than seasonal influenza and similar bugs -- while the flu kills more people annually, there is a vaccine and hospitals are well acquainted with treating and containing it.
Officials in Thailand said Monday that a second patient has been treated with a new combination of HIV and flu drugs, after doctors said the cocktail had been successful in treating a 71-year-old woman from China with the virus. Officials have yet to provide an update on the success of the treatment for the second patient.
A purpose-built hospital dedicated to treating the virus also opened in Wuhan Monday. The institution was constructed in under a week, and a second is due to open Thursday. Both will only handle coronavirus patients, helping to take the pressure off the severely stretched Wuhan healthcare system.
Chinese health officials said that the average time needed for a patient to recover is nine days. However, in Hubei province, the average recovery time is currently at 20 days because there are more severe cases.
The death rate has also been higher in Hubei because of a lack of hospital beds and large number of cases creating delays in treatment.

Indonesia Douses Airlines Passengers From Wuhan With Mist Spray As They Disembark - International Business Times

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 10:31 PM PST

Being sprayed with a mist of an unknown substance while exiting an airliner is not the greeting one would expect. But that has happened in Batam, Indonesia, as attempts to contain the 2019-nCoV coronavirus of Chinese origin intensify.

Photos posted to Twitter on Saturday show passengers disembarking a Batik Air Indonesia flight where people clad in yellow hazmat suits and backpack like containers spray them down with a clear mist. The word "Alkohol" can be seen on the containers so one might assume that the substance being sprayed is an alcohol-based antiseptic. The exact formula or brand of antiseptic has not been reported.

The Jakarta Post reported that the spokesperson for Indonesian President Joko Widodo said that the passengers had become trapped in Wuhan and other cities in the Hubei province because of the travel shutdown imposed by the Chinese government. The president's spokesperson said of the passengers, "All have been declared healthy according to World Health Organization standards."

Wuhan, located about 515 miles (830 km) west of Shanghai, is "ground-zero" for the coronavirus where people began to fall ill in late December. It is now a global health crisis with many countries confirming cases. The U.S. has eight cases, the most recent a student at the University of Massachusetts in Boston who was returning from Wuhan.

According to CNN, over 17,300 cases are confirmed globally with 361 deaths reported in China and 1 death in the Philippines of a Chinese man who had been in Wuhan. The 361 Chinese fatalities have surpassed the 349 caused by the SARS virus in 2002-03 that killed nearly 800 people in total.

The ordeal is not over for the passengers on the flight. After landing and being sprayed at about 9:00 a.m. Saturday they were taken to Natuna Island, located about 350 miles (565 km) northeast of Batam in the South China Sea. A military base is located on the island where the passengers will remain in isolation for two weeks. Ironically, the island chain has been the focus of recent disputes between Indonesia and China.

Seven other passengers originally scheduled to be on the plane remained in China. Three of them did not meet the health requirements for the flight and four others remained for other reasons not related to the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, as the virus continues to appear in more locations, the U.S. and other countries are evacuating their citizens. CNN reports of a flight with 56 Italian nationals from Wuhan. It landed at Pratica di Mare military airport, outside of Rome, on Monday morning and the passengers are expected to undergo medical examinations before being transported to a military compound on the outskirts of Italy's capital. The people are scheduled to remain in isolation at the facility for 14 days. There was no mention of any alcohol spray as the passengers left the plane.

ASN: Reyna scores wonder goal, Holmes still red hot, other Americans win, & more - AmericanSoccerNow.com

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 10:06 PM PST

Gio Reyna's goal will be talked about for a long time. After a series of cameos to start his first-team BvB career, his goal on Tuesday marked a grande entrance. Meanwhile, Duane Holmes continued his red hot form and a bunch of other Americans won. For Josh Gatt, the story remained the same. ASN's Brian Sciaretta reports.

BY Brian Sciaretta Posted

5:55 PM

IT WASN'T expected to be a big day for American Soccer but that's how it turned out to be with several key players in action in cup games and one of the country's top young players hitting a magnificent first professional goal.

Reyna's wonder goal

In the third round of the German Cup, Werder Bremen hosted Borussia Dortmund and both Josh Sargent and Gio Reyna were on the bench for their respective clubs.

The first half was all Werder Bremen with the hosts taking a 2-0 lead into the break. Sargent came into the game in the 49th minute and Reyna came in in the 66th minute. One minute after Reyna came into the game, Norwegian sensation Erling Haland cut the deficit in half. But Werder extended the deficit to two with another goal three minutes later.

Then in the 78th minute Reyna scored a goal for the ages when he showed a unique ability to control the ball in tight space, beat three defenders, and then unleash an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

It's worthless to describe, so just watch it.

It almost doesn't even matter that Reyna's team lost. With that goal, the son of the former U.S. national team captain showed his class and his potential. The only thing that remains to be seen is whether or not he will play with the U-23 team for the Olympics the next few months or the full national team.

Holmes scores in Derby rout

Duane Holmes has been playing his best soccer of the season over the past month where he has been one of Derby County's impact players. Aided by the arrival of Wayne Rooney, Holmes has played to his potential.

On Tuesday, Holmes got the start for Derby against fourth-tier League Two's Northampton Town in the FA Cup.

In the 35th minute with Derby County up 1-0, Holmes doubled the lead when he took advantage of holes in the defense to get on the end of a pass and fire home from close range. With the goal, Holmes now has two goals and two assists over his last six games across all competitions.

Holmes is now in significantly better position for a return to the U.S. national team in the coming months than he was in the fall. While his omissions was viewed as controversial in October in November, Holmes still only had one assists and no goals in the first half of the season. His form has greatly improved now and it would be surprising if he is left off in March if he keeps this form up.

McKennie, Yedlin, Chandler, and Gioacchini all post wins

There were numerous other Americans who all were part of nice wins, even if they weren't on the scoresheet.

Weston McKennie was on the bench for Schalke's German Cup matchup against Hertha BSC. Jurgen Klinsmann's Hertha squad had a 2-0 lead on the road at halftime

McKenne came into the game in the 60th minute with his team still trailing 2-0. But Daniel Caligiuri goal in the 76th and Amine Harit's goal in the 82nd sent the game into extra time. Benito Raman eventually won it for Schalke in the 115th minute.

Next up for Schalke is a trip to the quarterfinals of the German Cup.

Also in the German Cup, Timothy Chandler came in the 81st minute for Eintracht Frankfurt in a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig (where Tyler Adams was an unused substitute for Leipzig). The game was 2-1 when Chandler entered the game and the American was on the field for the final goal in stoppage time.

In a fourth-round replay in the FA Cup, DeAndre Yedlin started and played a full 120 minutes for Newcastle United in a 3-2 away win over third tier League One team Oxford United.

In France's Ligue 2, Kansas City native Niko Gioacchini earned the start for SM Caen against relegation fodder Chamois Niortais. The game was wild and back an fourth with SM Caen prevailing 4-3. Gioacchini, 19, went the distance although did not register a goal or an assist. This season, the American forward has two goals in 11 Ligue 2 games (797 minutes) and another goal over one appearance in the Coupe de France where he played 90 minutes.

Gatt injured again

In a bit of sad news, Josh Gatt has been on trial with reigning League of Ireland champs Dundalk FC and played today in a friendly against Longford Town.

Gatt, 28, was playing very well by all reports but then came up injured again. Gatt was once a promising young American player but has seen his career completely derailed by repeated knee injuries. Hopefully, this latest injury is not serious.

LG Electronics is withdrawing from Mobile World Congress due to coronavirus - The Verge

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 10:03 PM PST

LG Electronics, the division of LG Corporation responsible for mobile phones and other consumer tech, says it will be withdrawing from the upcoming Mobile World Congress expo in Barcelona, Spain due to the coronavirus outbreak. LG's decision follows ZTE's cancellation of its MWC press conference earlier today.

"With the safety of its employees and general public foremost in mind, LG has decided to withdraw from exhibiting and participating in MWC 2020 later this month in Barcelona, Spain. This decision will prevent needlessly exposing hundreds of LG employees to international travel, which most health experts have advised," an LG spokesperson said in a statement given to The Verge. "In lieu of its participation in MWC, LG will be holding separate events in the near future to announce its 2020 mobile products."

MWC, a smartphone-centric conference, is held annually every February in Barcelona, and it's a primary destination for Asian consumer electronics manufacturers to showcase new phones and other tech on a world stage. The conference's organizers, trade group GSMA, have said the 2020 show "will proceed as planned" and said just earlier this morning that there has been "minimal impact on the event thus far" due to the coronavirus outbreak. Yet GSMA has also issued a number of measures to try to mitigate risk, including a no-handshake policy at the show and more aggressive hygiene measures around speaker microphones and demo booths.

The latest numbers on the coronavirus, which began in the Chinese city of Wuhan, include 400 people killed and more than 20,000 sick, as well as substantial restrictions on travel to and from mainland China and business operations within the country. It's unclear whether the Chinese government plans to advise people to return to work once the extended Lunar New Year holiday ends on February 10th.

Mobile operators clash on 'notspots' costs - BBC News

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 09:03 PM PST

An agreement to share network equipment in order to improve phone coverage in rural areas has hit a stumbling block over costs.

Rival operators are unhappy at the price BT-owned EE is asking them to pay to share its equipment.

O2's chief said the fees being sought by its rival "may undermine the viability of the project".

BT said the costs were based on the value of the masts and other investments it had made over the years.

A key meeting is due to take place on Wednesday to hammer out the details, the BBC has learned.

No signal

The £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) agreement was announced in October and aims to get the mobile operators working together to extend the geographic coverage of 4G to 95% of the UK by 2025.

Many rural areas have only patchy service, and some have none at all.

The government is contributing £500m towards the costs, with the other half of the bill being footed by the mobile operators.

The Conservatives want the deal done as soon as possible - ideally in time for the Budget on 11 March - and has threatened to intervene if the operators cannot reach agreement.

The BBC understands that if the mobile operators do fail to agree, the government will consider other ways of achieving its 95% coverage goal.

It will, said one industry insider, make delays to improving rural mobile coverage inevitable.

Supermarket sweep?

The Financial Times reported that BT wants to include 320 yet-to-be-built masts in the agreement and to charge 250% more than the existing commercial rate for rivals to access them.

One insider told the BBC it would be cheaper for operators to build their own masts.

BT has not revealed the commercial agreements it is hoping to sign with other operators but it is believed it will offer rivals a cheaper rate for masts on its emergency service network, which was partially funded by the government. There are several hundreds of these in rural locations.

Previously BT's chief executive Marc Allera has said the costs of sharing equipment needed to reflect the fact that EE has 4G coverage in "significantly more places than any other network".

"Finding an analogy here is tricky because this is complex, but I sometimes think of it like Sainsbury's building a new superstore in a rural area and being made to give away shelf space to Tesco, Lidl and Asda," he said in a blog.

Of the meeting this week BT told the BBC that it was "ready to go".

"We've proposed a far simpler and more pragmatic way for SRN to succeed, plus a way to reduce any taxpayer money by also including new sites that are being built by us in the future.

"It's now down to the industry to finalise the deal to get it done."

All the operators said they were committed to getting an agreement.

In a blog, O2 chief executive Mark Evans said: "The SRN requires all four mobile network operators to deliver additional investment and an unprecedented level of infrastructure-sharing; it requires the government to deliver planning policy reform and a modest level of funding."

Dave Dyson, chief executive of Three, said: "Enhancing mobile connectivity for the 9.3 million living in the UK's countryside requires a joined-up approach between the industry and government.

"A Shared Rural Network is the best way to do that, bringing mobile coverage to more places in the UK and giving people in rural areas a similar choice to those living in towns and cities."

And Vodafone told the BBC: "We remain committed to the Shared Rural Network scheme and are working towards reaching a final agreement."

Some analysts are trimming their China GDP forecasts amid coronavirus outbreak - CNBC

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 08:01 PM PST

An outbreak of pneumonia-like disease caused by a coronavirus was registered in Wuhan, a port city of 11 million people, the administrative center of the Hubei province, at the end of December 2019.

Artyom Ivanov | TASS | Getty Images

Some analysts and economists are downgrading China's GDP growth forecast for 2020 as the coronavirus outbreak hits the world's second largest economy.

Economic activity in many cities halted as factories closed for week-long Lunar New Year holidays. The break was extended in some places — a move that will hit global supply chains.

Meanwhile, the service sector has also been hit as people are encouraged to stay at home. New movie launches have been cancelled during the country's peak season for consumer spending.

But some have argued that Beijing's expected stimulus measures may offset the outbreak's impact on the economy.

In 2019, China's full-year GDP growth was 6.1%, down from 6.6% the year before.

"The immediate and most significant economic impact is in China...but will reverberate globally, given the importance of China in global growth as well as in global company revenue," said Moody's Investors Service in a report last Wednesday.

On the same day, a Chinese government economist said that the country's first-quarter economic growth may drop to 5% or even lower due to the virus outbreak, Reuters reported, citing a local magazine.

Here's what banks and research houses are predicting for China's economy this year.

ANZ: Maintain at 5.8%

ANZ is maintaining full-year GDP growth forecast at 5.8% for now, although it has downgraded China's first-quarter growth from 5.9% to 5.0%.

"Industrial activity and exports will decrease due to a decrease in the number of working days," ANZ economists said. "Supply chain activity will be interrupted as Wuhan is a large industrial hub in central China."

The economists are estimating a loss of 3.5 working days in the first quarter of 2020.

Citi: Downgrades from 5.8% to 5.5%

Citigroup economists are expecting China's full-year growth to slow from their previous forecast of 5.8% to 5.5%.

They said the negative economic impact will likely be concentrated in the first quarter of the year.

"Carefully calibrated policy interventions will be critical to mitigate the economic shock and maintain social stability," they added in a note.

Economist Intelligence Unit: Downgrades from 5.9% to 4.9-5.4%

The EIU said the outbreak could reduce real GDP growth in 2020 by 0.5 to 1 percentage point from its baseline forecast of 5.9% if the outbreak develops into an epidemic comparable to SARS.

"The government will implement restrictions on travel and shipments, which will cause disruptions to business activity," said Imogen Page-Jarrett, a research analyst.

"If the outbreak becomes an epidemic, rising expenditure on healthcare for local governments will limit room for spending in other areas," Page-Jarrett added.

"Plans for infrastructure building and other forms of stimulus aimed at putting a floor under economic growth this year could be put on hold."

While sectors like travel, tourism and manufacturing will be the hardest hit, some sectors like pharmaceuticals, online entertainment and e-commerce may pick up. Car sales may also get a boost as consumers stay away from public transport, he said.

Macquarie: Downgrades from 5.9% to 5.6%

Macquarie downgraded its forecast for China's first-quarter GDP growth from 5.9% to 4%. It is also shaving the country's full-year GDP growth from 5.9% to 5.6% — assuming the coronavirus outbreak comes under control by the second quarter of the year, said Larry Hu, chief economist for China.

"Our outlook for 2020 remains as 'getting worse before getting better,'" said Hu in a report this week, although it's still too early to assess the damage, he added.

Hu said he wasn't too concerned about the loss in consumption, as any losses would be an one-off event.

"For us, what's more important is the knock-on effect on property and the corporate sector," Hu said. "Especially, after four years of up-cycle, the property sector was already at a turning point even before Coronavirus hit," he said.

Mizuho: Downgrades from 5.9% to 5.6%

"Given the Wuhan virus (2019 nCoV) is exponentially more infectious than either SARS or MERS, devastation could be far more as travel, trade and economic activity face a greater scale of disruptions from larger and more transmissible outbreak," said Vishnu Varathan, head of economics and strategy for Asia.

For the first half of the year, Varathan said he expects China's GDP growth between 4.8% to 5.2% before picking up to 5.8% to 6.3% for the second half due to pent-up demand.

Moody's: Maintains at 5.8%

At this time, the ratings agency is keeping its forecast of a 5.8% GDP growth for China in 2020.

However, the composition of growth is likely to shift due to the impact of the virus on consumption in the first quarter that will potentially be offset by stimulus measures, said its analysts in a report last week.

Even though consumption will bounce back, the recovery will not be as strong as after the SARS outbreak of 2002 to 2003, as there will be "demand destruction," said Martin Petch, a senior credit officer at Moody's Investors Service.

"I think this time around there will be some demand which has been essentially destroyed," Petch told CNBC's "Squawk Box."

"People haven't traveled during Lunar New Year for example, and it's unlikely after this period of slower consumer demand that they'll double up on restaurant spending. For example, they won't go twice as many times in the coming quarters," Petch added.

Natixis: Downgrades from 5.7% to 5.5%

The immediate impact of of the coronavirus outbreak will be worse than that during the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus outbreak of 2002 to 2003 as the service sector is now China's key growth engine, said Alicia Garcia Herrero and Jianwei Xu, economists at Natixis.

"Based on the SARS's experience, the service sector is likely to be more severely affected than the manufacturing sector, especially for the transportation sector, which is an important component of services," they wrote. China's economic growth is also going through a structural deceleration due to an aging population and is at the end of a long urbanization process, they added.

"In other words, the coronavirus is hitting a weaker economy than was the case with SARS," they wrote.

Nomura: 'Significantly lower' than 6.1%

Nomura said that "the worst is yet to come" in the outbreak as the Chinese government acts on all front to contain the virus after its initial slow reaction.

Nomura analyst Ting Lu said in an email to CNBC last week that China's annual GDP growth could be "significantly" lower than the 6.1% in 2019.

The Japanese bank said that the economic impact of the coronavirus could be worse than during the SARS epidemic of 2002 to 2003.

Richard Bernstein Advisors: Fears will 'knock stuffing out' of growth

"The coronavirus is a serious issue and there is nothing positive to say about it," said Richard Bernstein Advisors, an investment firm.

It was bleak on the outlook in the first half of the year.

"To be frank, the attempts to contain the coronavirus and the associated public fears will knock the stuffing out of China's 1Q20 and potentially 2Q20 GDP and profits," said the firm in a note last week.

Beijing will likely respond to the economic impact of the coronavirus with even more monetary and fiscal stimulus on top what what is already in the pipeline.

"If the virus is contained within the next several months, then Chinese GDP could be significantly stronger than expected during late-2020 and early-2021."

Vanguard: Maintains at 5.8%

The main impact on China's economic growth is likely to be that on sentiment, said Qian Wang, Vanguard's Asia Pacific chief economist.

"The good news is that the Chinese government has taken serious actions quickly," said Wang in a note.

The investment advisor is maintaining its outlook for China's 2020 GDP growth at 5.8%, although the risk is clearly tilted toward the downside, she added.

The viral outbreak will threaten China's growth in the near-term, but Vanguard said there is potential for a rebound in the second half of the year due to anticipated government stimulus.

UBS: Downgrades from 6% to 5.5%

UBS is downgrading its forecast for China's growth in 2020 from its previous 6.0% estimate to 5.5%.

"We believe China's aggressive measures to contain the virus, including quarantining, as well as preventive measures in other countries like flight cancellations, and border controls, will ultimately prove effective," wrote Mark Haefele, global chief investment officer.

Still, "these measures will contribute to a near-term negative economic shock, as a result of curtailed consumer demand and supply chain disruptions," Haefele added in a report last week.

Assuming successful containment of the virus, growth will rebound in future quarters due to pent-up demand and potential government stimulus, he said.

T-Mobile, Sprint partner on call verification to fight spoofed calls - CNET

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 07:03 PM PST

Call verification is coming between T-Mobile and Sprint.

Angela Lang/CNET

T-Mobile and Sprint may still be waiting for a judge to rule on their pending merger but that hasn't stopped the companies from continuing to work together. On Tuesday the two wireless carriers announced that they are beginning to roll out the Federal Communications Commission's recommended Stir/Shaken call verification technology for calls made between their two respective networks.

Using this system, those who receive a call from someone on the other's network will see an indicator letting them know that it really is the person you expected and not a bad actor spoofing their phone number.

T-Mobile says 23 smartphones support Stir/Shaken call verification on its network today, promising that "more" are "coming soon." The carrier has previously enabled call verification on calls to and from Comcast's Xfinity Voice home phone service and calls with those on AT&T's cellular network

AT&T and Comcast have previously worked together on Stir/Shaken for calls between their respective home phone networks as well.

FCC chairman Ajit Pai has publicly put the pressure on carriers to implement measures to fight robocalls and call spoofers, threatening potential "regulatory intervention" last year if the systems aren't rolled out.

Tak Perlu Waktu Lama, Zulham Zamrun Langsung Gabung Latihan Persib Bandung

Actress, Shannen Doherty, reveals cancer diagnosis - WBRZ

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 05:50 PM PST

Shannen Doherty

Shannen Doherty, an actress most known for her role in Beverly Hills 90210, appeared on ABC news, Tuesday morning and broke the news of her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis.

The 48-year-old actress said, "It's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I have stage 4. So my cancer came back and that's why I'm here."

In 2017, Doherty announced that she was in remission for breast cancer, which had been initially diagnosed in 2015.

Now, Doherty says she's been discreetly battling cancer for over a year while continuing to work on the Beverly Hills reboot, BH90210.

She told reporters when she first learned about her diagnosis, her primary concern was how she'd break the news to her family.

"I don't think that I've processed it," she said. "It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways. I definitely have days where I say, 'Why me?' And then I go, 'Well why not me? Who else? Who else beside me deserves this?' None of us do. I would say that my first reaction is always concern about how am I going to tell my mom, my husband."

She and photographer, Kurt Iswarienko have been married since 2011.

Bonehead claims to have coronavirus on plane in bid to make viral video - New York Post

Posted: 04 Feb 2020 05:23 PM PST

A bonehead tried to gain viral internet fame by announcing he was infected with the coronavirus in the middle of a flight from Toronto to Jamaica — forcing the plane to turn around and landing himself in cuffs.

James Potok, 28, told CityNews it was "simply a joke" when he stood up and declared to the plane that he had the deadly disease on Monday morning — forcing the WestJet Airlines flight to head back to Canada.

"About mid-way through the flight, I stood up, pulled my video camera out — I was going to post it to Instagram, send it to 6ixbuzz so it goes viral," he told the outlet.

"I looked around, I said 'can I get everybody's attention please' and … I followed up by saying, word-for-word, I said, 'I just came back from Hunan province, the capital of the coronavirus … I'm not feeling too well. Thank you.'"

But no one laughed, he admits — instead, the crew quickly donned face masks, and he was booed off the flight by other passengers when it touched down back at Toronto Pearson Airport.

He was then arrested and charged with mischief and a breach of recognizance after doctors determined he was free of symptoms.

Potok, an aspiring musician, nevertheless insists the prank was "good for publicity."

"It would be something else if I said, 'Hey guys, I have a bomb strapped to me,'" Potok told CityNews. "People blew it out of proportion."

"In retrospect, it probably wasn't the best thing to do," he admitted.

Potok is due back in court on March 9.

Hip to helping: Surgeon's orthopedic preservation procedure makes a difference to patients - The Republic

The pain had gotten so bad in Philip Artis' right hip that he could do little other than lie down at the end of workday at his manufacturing job. He rated the discomfort most days as an eight on a scale of 1 to 10. Even though he was only 18 at the time of one medical exam, one doctor told him he probably would need a hip replacement by age 25.

But in early November, the Columbus resident replaced those plans with a different, less radical procedure — one that saved his hip, saved him a possible journey through narcotics and saved him plenty of post-surgical struggle.

He found Columbus' Dr. Eric Tannenbaum, a Southern Indiana Orthopedics surgeon who suggested a newer version of a minimally-invasive hip preservation procedure, also known as hip arthroscopy. Tannenbaum is among a small number of doctors in central Indiana, and the only one in the Columbus area, doing the surgery.

But, until recently, some of the traditional hip arthroscopy surgeries left patients with groin injuries. Tannenbaum's approach avoids that by skipping an old element of a perineal post being placed on the groin to get proper access to an injured hip.

In Tannenbaum's procedure, a Stryker Pivot Guardian tilted bed provides proper traction and patient positioning during the surgery, eliminating post-procedure complications.

"My quality of life has increased so much," Artis said. "Now, after work, I can get things done around the house."

Before the procedure in November, "just going up the steps to my upstairs apartment was a struggle," he said. "Now, I can just go right up them. And before, just to step my foot over the edge of the bathtub to get in the shower was very painful.

"Now, I can do that easily."

His pain level most days after work is only a "one" or a "two" now — a dramatic change. And he said that's simply because he still is recovering and rebuilding strength in the hip that was the focus of the procedure, according to his physical therapist.

"The fact that this helped me so much has motivated me to see if I can help others get the same help," Artis said.

An especially strong and healthy mobility matters perhaps a bit more to Artis than some others since he is in the Marine Reserves. And his increasing ease of movement is all the more dramatic since he broke his pelvis in three places in an auto accident a year ago, besides his hip challenges.

Tannenbaum strongly feels that the newer hip arthroscopy procedure needs more public attention — especially when he has seen patients who were told several years ago that they would have to learn to deal with their hip pain until time for a hip replacement. They were told nothing else could be done.

The newer procedure corrects a situation before added problems develop, according to the surgeon. So he's now doing all he can to get the word out. He began doing the surgery locally in September. In his training in Los Angeles, he spent an entire year doing hip preservation and other procedures from world-renowned leaders in the field.

"My biggest hope down the road is to just get busier doing these (procedures) to help people," Tannenbaum said.

About the doctor and procedure

Who: Dr. Eric Tannenbaum of Columbus' Southern Indiana Orthopedics (not related to Dr. Darryl Tannenbaum in the same practice).

Specialty procedure: Newer hip arthroscopy that addresses a wide range of chronic hip pain and avoids post-surgical groin-related problems of the past and is a less-dramatic procedure than a hip replacement.

Recovery time: About three months, depending upon a mix of variables and physical therapy.
