New Zealand police officer shot dead in routine traffic stop - CNN

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

The officer was one of two shot at when they stopped a car in the suburb of Massey on Friday morning, Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said at a press conference. The other is in hospital in serious condition, while a member of the public is also being treated for minor injuries after being hit by the car as it fled the scene.
A manhunt is now underway for two people in the car. Schools in the immediate area have been locked down and police in the area are armed, Coster added.
New Zealand police generally don't carry guns. The country has a relatively low rate of gun-related crime, and incidents where police officers are killed in the line of duty are not common.
Since 1890, just 32 police officers have died from a criminal act while carrying out their duties, according to the New Zealand police website. The last to be killed was Senior Constable Len Snee, who was fatally wounded while carrying out a routine search warrant at a property in Napier in 2009.
"This is devastating news and absolutely the worst thing for us to deal with," Coster said. "This is a terrible day for us.
"What is clear is that this incident unfolded very quickly. The incident points to the real risk our officers face as they go about their jobs every day."
The issue of whether New Zealand police officers should be armed has been the subject of intense debate in recent weeks.
Following last year's Christchurch mosque shooting, in which 51 people were killed, police launched a controversial armed response team trial in three districts.
Coster announced last week that the trial would not continue, saying the armed teams "do not align with the style of policing that New Zealanders expect."
"We police with the consent of the public, and that is a privilege," he said in a statement at the time.

Mississippi actress speaks out after Facebook post to First Lady Reeves about state flag - WLOX

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:48 PM PDT

"So, essentially this flag has been an accomplice in these acts of domestic terrorism, and that flag hangs outside of the Governor's Mansion, in a state, in the United States of America. So, the reason that I wanted to address Mrs. Reeves is because George Floyd, when he was dying, he was calling for his mother. He was calling for his deceased mother. His mother couldn't help him. She was already gone. He knew that he was coming to meet her," she said. "So he was calling for her. My question is, what is it like to be a mother, and pass by that flag every day when people around you are dying, because of the principles that flag holds? What does that feel like? So, I wasn't just speaking to Mrs. Reeves because she's Gov. Reeves' wife. I was speaking to her because she has a voice. She has a powerful voice, as another woman, and as the First Mother of our state," she said.

Pompeo calls Bolton 'a traitor' as Trump administration scrambles to halt book release - CNN

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

"I've not read the book, but from the excerpts I've seen published, John Bolton is spreading a number of lies, fully-spun half-truths, and outright falsehoods," Pompeo said in a statement. "It is both sad and dangerous that John Bolton's final public role is that of a traitor who damaged America by violating his sacred trust with its people."
"To our friends around the world: you know that President Trump's America is a force for good in the world," he continued.
Pompeo's comments come as the White House scrambles to halt the release of Bolton's new book, "In the Room Where it Happened," in which Bolton details a troubling and shocking series of allegations about his tenure as President Donald Trump's national security adviser. He alleges that Trump requested Chinese help to win the 2020 election, that the President argued Venezuela is part of the US, that he casually offered to intervene in the criminal justice system for foreign leaders and that Trump had no problem with China's concentration camps.
In the book, a copy of which has been obtained by CNN, Bolton also alleges that Pompeo had privately assailed Trump during negotiations with North Korea.
Bolton describes a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un in which the North Korean leader blamed troubled relations between his country and the US on the actions of prior administrations. Emphasizing the meetings he and Trump had held, Kim told the President that they could dispel mistrust and work quickly toward a nuclear agreement.
After Trump told Kim that he would seek Senate ratification of any agreement with North Korea, Bolton writes that Pompeo passed him a notepad. On it was scribbled the message, "he is so full of shit."
"I agreed," Bolton writes, going on to note that Kim promised no further nuclear tests.
Trump, for his part, told the Wall Street Journal Wednesday evening he didn't believe Bolton's account.
"I have no strain with Pompeo. No, I have a very good relationship with Pompeo," he said, adding later that "Pompeo and Bolton had a terrible relationship."
In a court filing Wednesday night, the Justice Department asked DC District Court Judge Royce Lamberth for an emergency order to halt the book's release arguing it contains potentially damaging national security details.
"To be clear: Defendant's manuscript still contains classified information," Justice Department lawyers wrote on Wednesday. "This means it contains instances of information that, if disclosed, reasonably could be expected to cause serious damage, or exceptionally grave damage, to the national security of the United States."
Bolton's lawyer has said he diligently went through the administration's book review process, took care to avoid revealing classified details and was told the process was complete.

Man arrested in viral video by Adel Police released from jail Thursday - WCTV

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 09:47 PM PDT

ADEL, Ga. (WCTV) - The suspect in a controversial arrest made by the Adel Police Department on Monday was released from jail after posting bond on Thursday.

40-year-old Gary Thomas was charged for probation violation, possession of cocaine, giving a false name and date of birth to officers and two counts of battery against law enforcement officers.

His arrest was caught on camera and shared on Facebook. Bystanders are alleging officers used excessive force, punching and kicking Thomas.

Adel Police Chief Chad Castleberry told WCTV on Wednesday Thomas claimed his wrist was hurt but decline medical attention.

"He had complaints of a wrist injury," he said. "We contacted EMS. They evaluated him. They didn't detect anything, but we offered to take him to the hospital to get him checked out. He declined that. So we turned him over to jail staff."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident and studying body cams worn by the officers.

One officer has been placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation.

"No officer wants to use force. They would much rather have compliance, so we don't have this incident," Chief Castleberry said.

Thomas was reunited with his family outside the Cook County Jail.

He exited with his wrist wrapped, telling WCTV it was swollen, but he is impressed by how well the county jail took care of him.

He has not personally seen the video gone viral of his arrest, but he says he plans to take legal action against the officers.

Chief Castleberry says they're expecting an update from GBI on Friday.

We reached out to Thomas's attorney on Thursday for comment but have not heard back yet.

New NASA spaceflight chief makes no guarantees about 2024 moon landing goal - Spaceflight Now

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 09:42 PM PDT

STORY WRITTEN FOR CBS NEWS & USED WITH PERMISSION

Kathy Lueders was named associate administrator of NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate earlier this month. Credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett

Kathy Lueders, NASA's newly appointed head of human spaceflight operations, said Thursday that without a crystal ball, she could not give a yes-or-no answer when asked whether she believes NASA can put astronauts back on the moon by the end of 2024 as called for by the Trump administration.

"We're going to try," she told NASA Watch during a teleconference. "We're going to try, right? Sometimes it's the trying that gets us closer to the goal than the not trying."

Many space observers view the 2024 goal as unrealistic — one former NASA manager recently called it a "pipe dream" given the technical challenges — but Lueders said, "if you start and you say I can't get there, well, you're not going to get there."

"You've got to start and try to get there," she said. "If things come up along the way where technically it takes us longer, then we'll go figure it out. But right now, the team is trying."

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine added that "a simple yes-or-no answer is not the right approach here because everything is a range of probabilities. And that's that's true (of) everything from a subsystem to a system to the entire architecture. It's a range of probabilities."

"And I think what we've done with hiring Kathy Lueders to be the head of human exploration is we've increased the probability of success, and that's what we work toward every day," he said.

"If you're asking me if we're going to land on the moon in 2024, I'm going to tell you, yes, we can do it. We know it's hard. We know that there's bound to be challenges in front of us. But it is absolutely possible, and we're going to work towards it every day."

NASA originally planned to return to the moon with astronaut landings in 2028. The Trump administration moved the target up to 2024 and NASA has been working toward that goal under what the agency now calls the Artemis program.

NASA plans two test flights of its Space Launch System mega rocket and Orion crew capsule, one unpiloted and the other with a crew on board, before attempting to land the next man and the first woman on the moon in 2024 using a commercially developed lunar lander.

Lueders' predecessor, Douglas Loverro, unexpectedly resigned May 19, three weeks after awarding the lander contracts, leaving a figurative mountain of work on the desk for Lueders. As associate administrator for spaceflight, Lueders now oversees the International Space Station, the Commercial Crew Program, Artemis and other major initiatives.

Lueders most recently served as manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, overseeing the development of new crew capsules built by SpaceX and Boeing. SpaceX launched the program's first piloted mission May 30, sending astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley on a smooth flight to the International Space Station.

Agency insiders say Lueders provided firm leadership at the helm of the Commercial Crew Program and Bridenstine said Thursday she "has the right set of skills and the right leadership qualities to take our agency deeper into the solar system, and I know she's committed to that."

Said Lueders: "I do feel like I'm filling big footprints. And looking down, I realize I need to grow a few shoe sizes, quick. But I know after working across the agency over the last 28 years, that HEO has a great NASA team, a great industry team and great international partners. And I'm really looking forward to jumping in and helping them."

Lueders said the Crew Dragon capsule that carried Hurley and Behnken to the space station is operating smoothly. While it has electronically slept during most of its stay at the station, the crew activates its systems once a week to monitor performance.

"The Crew Dragon's been doing great," she said. "It's been waking up every week, they do check outs every week … and it goes back into what we call quiescent mode, which is kind of like sleep mode. … It's been doing so wonderfully, people forget it's kind of like a maiden voyage for this Crew Dragon and so far, she's been doing great."

NASA managers have not yet decided how long to keep Hurley and Behnken aboard the station. Both astronauts are helping station commander Chris Cassidy, the only other American on board, carry out research and maintenance, and next week Behnken will join him for the first of two spacewalks to replace a set of the lab's aging solar array batteries.

The Crew Dragon's eventual landing date will depend on a variety of factors ranging from weather in the Atlantic Ocean splashdown zone to the time needed to inspect the craft before clearing another crew for launch on an operational six-month station mission in September.

"Right now, we're looking at the (Crew Dragon) coming back in the early August timeframe," Lueders said. "But obviously, we've got to continue to monitor progress and make sure we're wisely using Doug and Bob as best we can to continue to provide additional safety and maintenance of the International Space Station."

Lueders is the first woman to head NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. She said Thursday, 37 years to the day after Sally Ride became the first American woman in space, that she did not initially think of herself as a role model.

"What's been amazing to me over the last few days is seeing all the tweets, Snapchats, Instagrams, all the notes from all the girls out there," she said. "That really helped me realize the power of my being first that means to them. They're able to see themselves in me.

"I'm very honored by that, and I'm expecting really big things from them. You better get going! I think when we can see ourselves in the people that are out there, it makes us realize we can do it. And that's very, very important for not only girls out there, but for all groups of people."

Australia says it is experiencing a 'sophisticated' state-based cyber attack - CNN

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Morrison revealed the existence of the attacks during a press conference on Friday, adding that a "state-based cyber actor" is "targeting Australian organizations across a range of sectors, including all levels of government, industry, political organizations, education, health, essential service providers and operators of other critical infrastructure."
We asked a hacker to try and steal a CNN tech reporter's data. Here's what happened
He did not specify which agencies or businesses are believed to be under attack, nor did he detail the exact nature of the attacks — though he did say that the government's investigation has not uncovered any "large-scale personal data breaches."
Morrison also did not say which state Australia believes to be behind the attack. But he told reporters that "there are not a large number of state-based actors that can engage in this type of activity."
"It is clear ... that this has been done by a state-based actor with very, very significant capabilities," Morrison added.
The attacks are also not new, and Morrison made clear that such threats are a "constant issue for Australia to deal with." But he added that he was prompted to speak Friday because the "frequency has been increasing" over "many months."
This story will be updated. Hilary Whiteman contributed reporting.

Restorasi Ekosistem Riau continues to restore largest intact peat swamp forest in Sumatra - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT

There has been a record of increased biodiversity and zero forest and land fires in the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) concession for six consecutive years.

Entering its sixth year, RER, the largest restoration and conservation program on peatland in Sumatra, has again recorded progress in efforts to conserve habitats for protected flora and fauna.

Initiated by APRIL Group in 2013, RER is committed to protecting, restoring and conserving ecosystems on peatland as well as maintaining carbon stocks and conserving biodiversity inconcessions covering 150,693 hectares in Riau province, equivalent to the area of London.

According to its 2019 Progress Report, RER achieved three important things, namely an increase in the inventory of flora and fauna, success in protecting forest restoration from fires for six consecutive years and several biodiversity research initiatives.

Increase of flora and fauna inventory

As of 2019, RER has identified an additional 38 species of flora and fauna to a total of 797 species found in the Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island. Seventy-six of the species are mammals, while 307 are birds, 107 are amphibians and reptiles, 190 are species of trees, 89 are fish and 28 are insects (Odonata).

From those figures, 57 species are included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red Lists as vulnerable (36), endangered (13) and critically endangered (8). There are also 114 species that are included in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) list and 106 species listed by the Indonesian government as protected.

Natural habitat: Two Long Tailed Macaques enjoy their time on a tree. The flora and fauna was survived during six years in the peatlands of Sumatra, thanks to the Riau Ecosystem Restoration program.Natural habitat: Two Long Tailed Macaques enjoy their time on a tree. The flora and fauna was survived during six years in the peatlands of Sumatra, thanks to the Riau Ecosystem Restoration program. (./.)

Zero fires for six consecutive years

Over the past six years, there have also been zero forest and land fires in the RER area due to a strong commitment in forest restoration, hydrological restoration and direct community involvement.

"Overall, our efforts in maintaining and restoring the ecological functions of the region have shown tremendous results. By 2019, the 81,200 meters of old drainage canals within the REarea have been closed as part of a continuous effort to close all of them by 2025," said

RER external affairs director Nyoman Iswarayoga on Thursday, June 18.

Canal closure plays an important role in RER's hydrological restoration efforts to reduce fire hazards and minimize carbon emissions. In the past year, RER successfully restored 112.6 ha of peat swamp forest through planting natural saplings and assisted natural regeneration (ANR).

Another factor in the success of the RER in keeping its area free from hotspots and fires is its continuous partnership with communities living around the restoration area. Throughout 2019, RER facilitated six community groups to implement no-burn agricultural and freshwater fish farming, which provided additional income for the community.

Research initiatives

In 2019, RER began an insect survey for Odonata, which included dragonflies and damselflies. In addition, RER also conducted a pilot study to investigate how mammal species respond to the interface or edge between acacia plantations and peat swamp forests.

The RER team also initiated a project with SINTAS (Save the Indonesian Nature and Threatened Species) Foundation to conduct the first survey on the presence of tigers in the Kampar Peninsula to support the Sumatran Tiger Survey, as well as the Indonesian National Tiger Recovery Program Recovery Program.

These biodiversity research initiatives are RER's efforts in restoring forests in the region.

More comprehensive knowledge about the types of species in the RER area will greatly assist in determining the strategy and success of ecosystem restoration.

"For example, 28 species of Odonata found in the initial five days of the survey on the Kampar Peninsula show that our peat ecosystem is in good condition. Because Odonata is known as an indicator for freshwater ecosystems health," Nyoman said.

Supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Director of PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP), the operating arm of APRIL Group, Sihol Aritonang said the achievement recorded by RER could not be separated from the methods established by APRIL, namely the production-protection model, especially in the Kampar Peninsula region.

Furthermore, RER is also a concrete manifestation of the company's commitment to encourage the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 15: Life on Land.

"In addition, RER is part of the realization of APRIL's Sustainable Forest Management Policy (SFMP) 2.0. APRIL has made a 1-for-1 commitment, where we conserve or restore one hectare of natural forest for every hectare of industrial plantations managed, "explained Sihol.

At the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) in Paris, APRIL committed US$100 million for 10 years to support APRIL's ecosystem restoration and conservation projects.

To note, RER's restoration and conservation efforts are inseparable from the government's support, especially the Environment and Forestry Ministry, which has granted a Business License for the Utilization of Timber Forest Products-Ecosystem Restoration (IUPHHK-RE) to be managed by RER in 2013. This management permit is valid for 60 years.

Commitment to restoration amid COVID-19 pandemic

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, RER reiterated its commitment to continue running the ecosystem restoration program in accordance with the work plan set for this year.

"The commitment to conserve habitats for protected flora and fauna remains our priority. In the implementation, we take into account health protocols as recommended by the government to ensure safety of the RER team and the people living around the RER," Nyoman said.

Australia subject to ‘state-based’ cybersecurity attack, PM Morrison says - Metro US

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT

FILE PHOTO: Australian Prime Minister Morrison speaks during a joint press conference at Admiralty House in Sydney

SYDNEY (Reuters) – A "sophisticated state-based actor" has been attempting to hack a wide range of Australian organisations for months and had stepped up its efforts recently, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Friday.

The attacks have targeted all levels of the government, political organisations, essential service providers and operators of other critical infrastructure, Morrison said in a media briefing in Canberra.

"We know it is a sophisticated state-based cyber actor because of the scale and nature of the targeting," he said.

Morrison said there were not a lot of state actors that could launch this sort of attack, but Australia will not identify which country was responsible.

Australia's Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said advice showed no large-scale personal data breaches from the attack, as she urged businesses and organisations to ensure any web or email servers are fully updated with the latest software and the use of multi-factor authentication.

An Australian government source said Morrison's public declaration was an attempt to raise the issue with those who could be targeted.

Australia's chief cyber intelligence agency said its investigations have so far found no evidence that the actor attempted to be "disruptive or destructive" once within the host's network.

Morrison said he had spoke with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday about the issue, while briefings to other allies have also been conducted.

The revelation comes after Reuters reported Canberra had determined in March last year that China was responsible for a hacking attack on Australia's parliament. Australia never publicly identified that source of the attack and China denied it was responsible.

A U.S. security ally, Australia strained ties with its largest trading partner, China, by pushing for an international inquiry into the source and spread of COVID-19 that first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.

Setback on Immigration Policy Goal Leaves Trump Fuming Over Makeup of Courts - The New York Times

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:42 PM PDT

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court protected young immigrants from immediate deportation on Thursday, but the decision ensured that their long-term fate would remain at the center of a divisive political clash as President Trump fights for another term in the final months of the 2020 election.

The court's opinion, written by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., was a victory for so-called Dreamers, the young immigrants who face deportation and the loss of work permits if the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, is terminated. But the court did not say that Mr. Trump could not end it, only that he did not follow the proper rules and procedures in trying to do so.

The president and his hard-line immigration advisers like Stephen Miller must now decide whether to give up or try again — an effort that would almost certainly extend beyond the election in the fall. But in a series of posts on Twitter, Mr. Trump hinted that he intended to make good on his promise in 2016 to eliminate the program, which he has called an illegal use of executive authority by President Barack Obama.

"Now we have to start this process all over again," Mr. Trump wrote, calling the court's opinion "a highly political one, and seemingly not based on the law."

For Mr. Trump, no issue is more fraught. Few things would fire up his base more than renewing his plan to deport hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants just months before the election. Failing to deliver on that pledge risks alienating his most fervent supporters on the issue that powered his victory to the White House.

Chad F. Wolf, the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, insisted on Thursday that that would not happen.

"The DACA program was created out of thin air and implemented illegally," he said. "The American people deserve to have the nation's laws faithfully executed as written by their representatives in Congress — not based on the arbitrary decisions of a past administration. This ruling usurps the clear authority of the executive branch to end unlawful programs."

But the Dreamers are not the gang members he so often claims are part of caravans from Central America arriving at the southwestern border. Most are respected members of society who are in many ways indistinguishable from the American citizens with whom they attended elementary, middle and high school.

And pushing for an end to DACA could alienate swing voters who are critical to Mr. Trump's hopes for a second term and for moderate Republicans who are crucial to the party's effort to maintain control of the Senate. Public polls show overwhelming support for the young immigrants, even among Republican voters.

"Is the president going to make the closing argument for his election an effort to strip away DACA and start large scale deportation for the Dreamers?" Todd Schulte, the president of Fwd.us, a business group that advocates on behalf of immigrants, asked Thursday after the ruling. "That is a political loser."

Credit...Doug Mills/The New York Times

At the same time, the court's 5-to-4 decision gives Mr. Trump a new opening to rally his right-wing base by arguing that he needs another four years to stack the courts with conservative jurists who will rule in his favor on immigration, abortion, gun rights and other contentious cultural issues. Since taking office, Mr. Trump — with the help of Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader — has aggressively pushed to install conservative judges on the bench, including two to the Supreme Court: Justices Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh.

And on Thursday, the president made clear his work was not done.

"These horrible & politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives," Mr. Trump tweeted barely an hour after the court announced that he had improperly terminated the Obama-era program.

Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, echoed Mr. Trump in a statement, lashing out at Chief Justice Roberts, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, a Republican, and vowing to make the court an issue in November.

"If the chief justice believes his political judgment is so exquisite, I invite him to resign, travel to Iowa, and get elected," Mr. Cotton wrote. "I suspect voters will find his strange views no more compelling than do the principled justices on the court."

After the court's ruling on Thursday, immigration advocates said they took seriously the president's threat to once again try to terminate DACA, promising to fight for the permanent legal status of nearly 800,000 young immigrants.

"They may be foolish enough to go after DACA again, but I hope they know and see that America has the DREAMERS' backs," Cecilia Muñoz, who served as Mr. Obama's top adviser on Hispanic issues and domestic policy, wrote on Twitter. She added a warning to the president and his aides about the political power of the pro-immigrant movement.

"We see you, Donald Trump, we see you Stephen Miller," she said, "and we're coming for you."

Whatever the president decides to do, the debate over what happens to the Dreamers in the long run will play out most starkly in the presidential contest between Mr. Trump and the presumptive Democratic nominee, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Mr. Biden hailed the ruling on Thursday and vowed to introduce legislation on his first day in office that would give the young immigrants permanent legal status in the United States. Efforts to pass such legislation have failed for more than a decade, but he said the court's temporary protections raise the stakes of the November election.

"I will continue to stand with DACA recipients, their parents and their families at every step, and in November, joined by millions across this country, we will reject the president who tried to rip so many of our family members, friends and co-workers out of our lives," Mr. Biden said in a statement.

The issue is already at the forefront of several key Senate races. Hours after the ruling, a Democratic group issued a news release seeking to make an issue out of what they claimed was opposition to DACA by Senator Cory Gardner, a moderate Republican from Colorado.

The group cited two votes to undermine the program that Mr. Gardner took in 2014 and 2015 as a member of the House. "No amount of election season revisionist history from Gardner can change that," wrote Zach Hudson, a spokesman for the group, American Bridge.

But since becoming a senator, Mr. Gardner has backed bipartisan efforts to find a legislative solution to give Dreamers a permanent legal status, including a path to citizenship. In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Gardner said he advocated such measures: "I support immediate passage of the Dream Act and would also support the House-passed Dream and Promise Act. The Senate should act quickly to provide permanent relief for Dreamers."

In Arizona, the court ruling could help efforts by Democrats who are seeking to defeat Senator Martha McSally. Tomás Robles Jr., the co-executive director of Living United for Change in Arizona, said Thursday that the temporary nature of the decision created an energy and immediacy around defeating Ms. McSally and blocking Mr. Trump's re-election.

"We have a few months to get him out of office. And if we don't succeed, he will come with the correct process to eliminate DACA," Mr. Robles said.

But on Thursday, Trump administration officials gave little indication that they were looking for compromise on the issue.

Stephanie Saul contributed reporting from New York, and Hank Stephenson from Phoenix.

Who is Kim Yo Jong? The North Korean leader's little sister could be moving to bigger things, analysts say - CNBC

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Kim Yo Jong appears to be stepping out on her own recently — without her elder brother, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by her side — which analysts said may indicate that she could be moving into a bigger role within the country's leadership structure.

In the last week, Pyongyang has issued threats and directives under the younger Kim's name alone — a development analysts said was striking.

"We're seeing a lot of big statements coming out of Kim Yo Jong," said John Park, director of the Korea Project at the Harvard Kennedy School. This indicates that her role is not just ceremonial and that she has been "chronically underestimated," he added.

The elder Kim sibling's complete absence is particularly significant, said Miha Hribernik, head of Asia, risk insight at Verisk Maplecroft.

"By letting his sister Kim Yo-jong lead the highly visible charge against the South, he is likely laying the groundwork for her elevation to a more senior position within the regime," Hribernik wrote in a note this week before North Korea blew up its joint liaison office with South Korea.

There's precedent for this since Kim Jong Un notably led the bombardment of South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island in 2010 in order to boost his standing with the military before taking over as Supreme Leader in 2011, Hribernik noted.

Little is known about Kim Yo Jong, but it is well documented that she spent some time in Switzerland with her brother Kim Jong Un. Both were born to the same mother, a consort to the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

Analysts say the siblings living together for a number of years in the same place outside their home country has fostered close ties between the two and that is now manifesting in the younger sister's elevation on a political level.

"I think what we're seeing now is essentially a reflection of a partnership that she has with her brother," said Park. "It looks like there is this kind of power partnership between the two that became more visible."

The younger Kim first came into the global limelight when she attended the opening ceremony of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. This made her the first from the Kim family to set foot in South Korea.

Later, the younger Kim accompanied her brother when he attended summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Although the younger Kim is a known factor and has been the de facto number two in North Korea for several years, she only began to assert herself this past March, said Lee Sung Yoon, Kim Koo-Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies at The Fletcher School at Tufts University.

That month she issued a letter in her own name ridiculing the South Korean presidential office and another acknowledging U.S. President Donald Trump's letter to her brother, signaling to "the world she is in charge of foreign policy," said Lee.

And with the bombing of the joint-office coming days after she warned about it, "she's showing that she is in charge and that she is a hardnose North Korean leader," said Lee.

While it's interesting that Kim Yo Jung has been "given the megaphone" to deliver the threat this time, that may also mean that tensions may grow on the Korean peninsula said Jung Pak, the SK-Korea Foundation Chair in Korea Studies at Brookings Institution's Center for East Asia Policy Studies.

"If this is intended to give her military credentials which was a gaping hole in her resume, then we might be seeing additional provocative action and manufactured crisis that end up in a military clash," Pak told CNBC.

iPhone 11 Stolen From Looted T-Mobile Store Tracked To San Bernardino Home; 2 Arrested - CBS Los Angeles

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — Two men have been arrested in connection with the looting of a T-Mobile store in San Bernardino during recent protests.

Siante Lockridge, 28, and Anthony Flewellen, 36, both of San Bernardino, are in custody on burglary charges.

(credit: San Bernardino Police Department)

Police say the store's glass door was broken down on May 31 by unknown suspects, and high-value cell phones and other electronic devices worth more than $8,000 were taken. One of those items happened to be an iPhone 11 box, which contained a tracking device. While the store was being looted, two people first tried a gun, then household tools to force entry into an inventory room, where surveillance cameras caught images of two men.

The day after the store was looted, a T-Mobile employee reported to the San Bernardino police that one of the phones was being tracked to a home in the 3700 block of RidgeLine Drive. The homeowner gave investigators one phone that was verified to be among the items stolen from T-Mobile store, but employees told police the tracking device continued to ping from the home.

Police executed a search warrant at the home on June 4 and identified Lockridge and Flewellen as the two men seen in the surveillance video. During the search, two semi-automatic handguns were also found and collected as evidence. Police did not say if the tracked cell phone or any other items were found.

Anyone with information about looting during the recent protests in San Bernardino can call Detective W. Porch at (909) 384-5640 or by email at porch_wi@sbcity.org, Sgt. M. Aranda at (909) 5642 or by email at aranda_ma@sbcity.org, or send the information to lootingtips@sbcity.org.

Actress Raven-Symoné marries Miranda Maday in private ceremony - KABC-TV

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Raven-Symoné announced she married Miranda Maday in a private ceremony via Instagram on Thursday.

"I got married to a woman who understands me from trigger to joy, from breakfast to midnight snack, from stage to home," the 34-year-old actress captioned her Instagram post. "I love you Mrs. Pearman-Maday!"

The former "View" co-host, whose full name is Raven-Symoné Christina Pearman, tied the knot with Maday in an intimate ceremony this week.

In a separate Instagram post depicting the home where the wedding photo was taken, Symoné said, "Thank you to all those who helped and for those who understand why it was small during this time."

The actress tagged only a handful of people in the post, including "Grey's Anatomy" actress and choreographer Debbie Allen.

"The View" co-hosts Whoopie Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Meghan McCain and Joy Behar also congratulated Symoné on her nuptials on Thursday's show.

The former child actress remained private about her personal life and sexual identity throughout her years on "The Cosby Show" and "That's So Raven," but spoke publicly on her sexuality in 2013 when the U.S. Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal across the country.

Since then, Symoné has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, co-hosting the 2019 L.A. Pride Parade in West Hollywood. This year, the "Raven's Home" star will return to co-host ABC7's "LA Pride 50th Anniversary Celebration," airing Saturday, June 27.

Real Madrid's Marco Asensio thrills Zinedine Zidane with goal after layoff - ESPN

Posted: 18 Jun 2020 05:42 PM PDT

Zinedine Zidane hailed the instant impact of Marco Asensio after the Real Madrid winger marked his return from an 11-month injury layoff with a goal and an assist in their 3-0 La Liga win over Valencia on Thursday.

Asensio, 24, needed just 31 seconds on the pitch to score with his first touch after coming on as a substitute at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium for his first appearance of the season.

Football is back! European leagues daily updates

"It means a lot, above all for him," Zidane said in his postmatch news conference. "We're happy to have Marco back on the pitch, but above all we're happy for him after 11 months out. To see him score a great goal with his first touch. He was really happy just to get on. He has the quality to do this kind of thing."

The winger ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments in July 2019 during an International Champions Cup game with Arsenal in Landover, Maryland.

"I was really looking forward to coming back," Asensio said. "I felt a lot of emotion and satisfaction. There's a lot of hard work behind this. The most important thing is I feel good and we won, and I'm back for the rest of the season."

The result -- Real Madrid's second win in two games since La Liga resumed last week after a three-month break -- means the club remains two points behind leaders Barcelona with nine games left to play.

"We only depend on what we're going to do," Zidane said when asked if he expects Barca to drop points away at Sevilla on Friday. "We know the situation. I'll watch Sevilla-Barcelona, but I'm not thinking about Barca dropping points there. I remember the only league I won as a coach [in 2017], it went to the last game in Malaga. It's all about us."

The French coach was also full of praise for striker Karim Benzema, who has now scored 16 goals in La Liga this season, and especially his extraordinary late volley from an Asensio assist that completed the 3-0 victory.

"It was a real golazo," Zidane said. "He was magnificent, just like the whole team. It wasn't easy to take the ball with his left foot, without it touching the ground. It's a really difficult move. Karim is Real Madrid's number nine and he has to score goals, but he does a lot more than that. So when he scores goals as well, we're all really pleased."

Benzema said: "It all happened so fast. It was a cross from Marco, I controlled it well, and then I shot with my left foot and it went in. It sounds easy when I explain it, but it's about acting quickly."

Real Madrid are next in action on Sunday night when they travel to Real Sociedad, before hosting Real Mallorca next Wednesday.

Artis Tabbed as SAC Male Athlete of the Year - Lenoir Rhyne College Athletics

Artis Tabbed as SAC Male Athlete of the Year - Lenoir Rhyne College Athletics

ArtisAOTY

Football

HICKORY, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne's senior defensive end Jaquan Artis has been named the South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year. Artis becomes just the fourth male -- and sixth of either gender-- to win the award which has been given out by the SAC each year since 1992.

The last Bear to earn the distinction was Michael Green during the 2013-14 athletic season. The honor, given to one male and one female in the league, is selected by the conference's athletic directors and the pool is comprised of each league-sponsored sport's Player(s) of the Year.

Artis, a senior defensive end from Kingston, N.C., was named the D2CCA Super Region Two Defensive Player of the Year and helped Lenoir-Rhyne to a 13-1 mark as the Bears advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. He was a finalist for both the Harlon Hill Trophy and Gene Upshaw Award closing his senior campaign with 82 tackles with 23 stops for loss and 14.5 sacks. Artis was just the second Bear to be up for the Harlon Hill Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in Division II, and the first since Leonard Davis was named a finalist in 1994. ROCK HILL, S.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne enjoyed a highly successful 2019 football season, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Armed with one of the premier defenses in all of Division II, the Bears finished 13-1 and reached the regional title game for the second consecutive year.

Senior safety Kyle Dugger, who was drafted by the New England Patriots in April's NFL draft, played a huge role in L-R's success. But several other defensive players also stood out for the Bears, including senior defensive end Jaquan Artis, who was previously named the Division II Conference Commissioners Association Super Region Two Defensive Player of the Year and on Wednesday was recognized as the South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year following a vote by the league's athletic directors.

A native of Kinston, Artis was also a finalist for both the Harlon Hill Trophy and the Gene Upshaw Award, given to the most valuable player and the best lineman in Division II, respectively. He had 82 tackles including 23 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks during his final year at L-R.

For his career, the 2019 SAC Defensive Player of the Year and consensus All-American had a staggering 47.5 tackles for loss and a program-record 29 sacks. Additionally, his 2019 sack total was the highest in all of Division II.

Trio of Bears land on CoSIDA Academic All-America teams

Three L-R athletes have recently been named to College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America teams, including junior softball player Talon LaClair, senior men's tennis player Paul Lenz and senior women's golfer Ainee O'Connor. The trio joins senior women's soccer player Abigael McGarel and senior football players Ronnie Clifton and Clayton Horn to give the Bears six CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for the 2019-20 academic year, the most in school history.

LaClair landed on the CoSIDA First Team after being a third-teamer last season. She hit .474 in 24 games and scored 28 runs to go with seven home runs and a team-high 23 RBIs. Furthermore, she compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average in mathematics and also earned a SAC Elite 20 Award.

Lenz and O'Connor nabbed CoSIDA Third Team honors in the Division II At-Large category, which includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.

Lenz was a SAC Elite 20 Award winner in 2019, and he also posted a near-perfect GPA. Meanwhile, O'Connor's CoSIDA Third Team recognition came on the heels of receiving the following accolades: SAC Golfer of the Year, SAC Elite 20 Award, SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American selection.

L-R places 283 on SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll

The Bears shattered their previous record of individuals named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll with 283 selections during the 2019-20 academic year. A year ago, L-R placed 195 on the honor roll.

Every team on campus posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for L-R, while the average team GPA of 3.52 was the highest in school history. A total of 2,175 student-athletes spanning each of the SAC's 12 member institutions and 20 sports were named to the 2019-20 SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

To be eligible for inclusion on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, student-athletes must have competed in a sponsored championship sport and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the academic year.
