PHILADELPHIA — Doug Pederson tested positive for the coronavirus, the team announced Sunday, which means the fifth-year coach is watching from afar as the Eagles begin their next phase of training camp Monday.
Under the agreement between the NFL and NFL Players Association for the 2020 season, the Eagles and most other NFL teams entered an “acclimation period” Monday that will last through Aug. 11.
The phase focuses on strength and conditioning, so the Eagles will have 60 minutes in the weight room and 60 minutes of on-field work, according to NFL Media. The Eagles will have their first walkthroughs of training camp with 60-minute walkthroughs for the first four days of the phase and then 75-minute walkthroughs for the next four days. The team will be off Saturday, Aug. 8.

Pederson will be keeping track of all this virtually. The 52-year-old, who is self-quarantining, is in the protocol for employees who test positive but remain asymptomatic. According to the protocols (via ESPN), Pederson can return to the NovaCare Complex after 10 days after his initial positive test or return after five days if he tests negative twice at least 24 hours apart. Pederson would also need to consult with team and league medical staff before returning in that case.
In the latter situation, Pederson’s first day back with the Eagles could be Aug. 8, which means Aug. 9 would be the first day he would get to work with the team on the field.
ESPN reported quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Press Taylor was also sent home from the team facility because he was in close contact with Pederson, though the outlet also reported he tested negative for the coronavirus.

In its statement, the Eagles said, “Any individuals in close contact with Pederson at our facility have been notified and will continue with daily testing procedures and compliance with all protocols before returning to the facility.”
In the interim, multiple outlets reported assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley will assume the head coaching duties at the facility with Pederson participating virtually where possible.
Staley, 45, has held the assistant head coach title since the 2018 season.
