Wisconsin protesters rally for second night against 'shocking and outrageous' police shooting of Jacob Blake - USA TODAY

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT

Protesters ignored the mobilization of the Wisconsin National Guard and an emergency curfew on Monday night to again protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

The Kenosha County Courthouse was the site of more protests Monday, as a large crowd gathered in the evening and members of law enforcement barricaded the area, according to local reports. Some Interstate 94 exit ramps in Kenosha County were closed, too.

Officers used tear gas to disperse protesters in front of the courthouse and protesters threw water bottles at officers in riot gear after the county's 8 p.m. curfew went into effect, according to reports from the scene.

By late Monday, a truck had been lit on fire, recreating a scene from Sunday's protests that saw city trucks on fire. The danger appeared to build deeper into the night: Several structures, including a Wisconsin Department of Corrections building, were set on fire in Kenosha. A local furniture store was also completely engulfed in flames.

There were protests elsewhere on Monday, too.

  • Hundreds gathered in Times Square in Manhattan and marched to Washington Square Park, according to CBS New York.
  • In Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed by a now-fired police officer on Memorial Day, protesters marched to a police precinct, according to WCCO-TV. The station reported five people were arrested for crimes related to "civil unrest."
  • A large group of protesters also marched to the state Capitol building in Madison.
  • On the West Coast, KCAL-TV in Los Angeles reported protesters were marching toward City Hall.

The Kenosha County Courthouse and Administration Building was closed Monday "due to damage sustained during last night's civil unrest," the county said on social media.. After video of Blake's shooting spread across social media on Sunday night, protests in the area led to property damage – at least three city vehicles burned, and words were spray-painted onto the courthouse.

"Kenosha County recently declared racism to be a public health crisis, and our leaders – myself included – have resolved to address this issue in a meaningful way. Sunday's tragedy and the ensuing reaction reinforce the need for change in our community," County Executive Jim Kreuser said in a statement.

The National Guard was deployed to Kenosha County "to help protect critical infrastructure and assist in maintaining public safety and the ability of individuals to peacefully protest" the Guard's public affairs office said in a statement Monday. State Gov. Tony Evers called the deployment a "limited mobilization."

Police shooting of Jacob Blake: National Guard heads to Kenosha after protests erupt, Wisconsin DOJ to investigate

"I know folks across our state will be making their voices heard in Kenosha and in communities across Wisconsin," Evers said in a statement. "Every person should be able to express their anger and frustration by exercising their First Amendment rights and report on these calls to action without any fear of being unsafe."

ACLU of Wisconsin Executive Director Chris Ott called the move unnecessary and urged law enforcement in the area to avoid arrests and displays of force. In particular, Ott warned against the use of tear gas.

"Based on what we've witnessed in protests across the country, we know that militarized policing often only serves to exacerbate tensions and opens the door to more police misconduct and violence," Ott said in a statement.

He added, "The response to protests over police brutality cannot be even more brutality; entering a community armed with tear gas, rubber bullets and riot gear achieves just the opposite effect."

NBA reaction: Upset at Jacob Blake shooting, Bucks' George Hill questions playing in NBA bubble

Blake, a Black man, was shot in the back multiple times Sunday by Kenosha Police Department officers responding to a domestic violence call, according to Ben Crump, the attorney representing Blake's family. Police have released little information about what led to the shooting and haven't said why officers approached Blake.

Graphic video circulating on social media shows Blake walking toward a car, followed by an officer who has a weapon drawn.

Blake opens the car door and reaches into the vehicle, and an officer tugs on his shirt. At least seven gunshots can be heard, followed by a car horn. Two officers can be seen in the video near the car; it is unclear what happened before the video was recorded. Crump said Blake's three sons were in the car when Blake was shot.

Crump said Blake was helping to deescalate a domestic situation. Monday, Crump told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network, that Blake was in stable condition.

Blake had an open warrant stemming from a domestic case in May, but police officials have not said if the officers were aware of the warrant when they responded to the call Sunday. Online records indicate a warrant was issued in the case in early July.

"At this point, we're still waiting for the facts to be confirmed," Crump told the Journal Sentinel. "But we know what we saw in that video, and it was clearly an excessive use of force that was shocking and outrageous and devastating and nobody's more devastated than his three sons."

A GoFundMe page has been started for Blake.

Video from the incident prompted almost instant public outcry. Several prominent figures, including Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and NBA superstar LeBron James, have expressed outrage at the incident.

Sunday report: Black man shot multiple times by Wisconsin police; video of incident sparks social media backlash, protests

Blake's grandfather, Jacob Blake Sr., was a prominent minister and civil rights leader in the Chicago area who helped organize a march and spoke in support of a comprehensive housing law in Evanston, Illinois, days after the 1968 slaying of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rachel Noerdlinger, publicist for the National Action Network, told The Associated Press that the Rev. Al Sharpton spoke Monday to Blake's father, who called the civil rights leader for his support. Blake's father will speak at Sharpton's March on Washington commemoration on Friday, Noerdlinger said.

“Seberg”: The story of actress Jean Seberg racialized and trivialized - WSWS

Seberg: The story of actress Jean Seberg racialized and trivialized

By James Brewer
25 August 2020

Amazon Studios' recent release, Seberg, is a fictional retelling of the tragic story of iconoclastic actress Jean Seberg by director Benedict Andrews, writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse.

The film, originally titled Against All Enemies, was premiered in Venice in August 2019 and shown at the Toronto International Film Festival a month later. It was intended for release in theaters in January, 2020, by Universal Pictures. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted screenings, and Amazon purchased distribution rights in February, retitling it Seberg.

Jean Seberg was a significant and courageous figure whose story deserves telling accurately. As an artist, her performance, alongside Jean-Paul Belmondo, in Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard's seminal 1960 film, helped launch the French "New Wave" movement in cinema. In addition, she featured in Otto Preminger's Saint Joan (1957) and Bonjour Tristesse (1958), Robert Rossen's Lilith (1964), Irvin Kershner's A Fine Madness (1966) and Claude Chabrol's The Road to Corinth(1967), among others.

Kreisten Stewart in Seberg

Seberg had her life tragically and deliberately destroyed by the FBI because of her sympathy for and association with radical causes, including the Black Panther Party. Seberg became a target by the time, in 1969, Director J. Edgar Hoover identified the Black Panthers as "the greatest threat to the internal security of the country" and ordered round-the-clock surveillance under his secret and illegal COINTELPRO operation.

The actress first became "collateral" and was then put directly "in the crosshairs" by Hoover. Seberg had long been sympathetic to the cause of equality. She was only one of many celebrities targeted by the FBI, including Jane Fonda, Marlon Brando, Vanessa Redgrave and, a bit later, former Beatle John Lennon. Largely as a result of the political and psychological pressure, Seberg committed suicide in 1979, at the age of 40.

The problem with Andrews' Seberg is that history is used here primarily as a stylized backdrop to pull the viewer, in the director's words, "into an emotional experience" that burrows its "way into your dreams." The underlying assumption is a common one of contemporary filmmakers: that audience members don't want to concern themselves with historical "nuances." They just want a good, i.e., a palatable story. Seberg reveals the creators' embarrassing lack of interest in the social and historical context of Seberg's time.

Artistic license is reasonable in cinema when used in the service of a greater truth. On the other hand, however, our age is characterized by vast official falsification and deception intended to keep the population unaware and suppressed.

Unhappily, Andrews and the writers made the decision to craft their narrative in a way that ties the antagonists—the FBI, the black militant movement and the actress—into a neat, "inter-active" package that largely excludes the overall character of the period in question and distorts the real nature of all three phenomena.

Seberg

From the outset, the filmmakers play fast and loose with history. The significance of the May-June events in 1968 in France is played down, while the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in April of the same year doesn't merit a mention. This was a time of rebellions and confrontations with the authorities in every major US city, the assassination of presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, widespread opposition to the war in Vietnam, police riots against demonstrators at the Democratic convention in Chicago, where Hubert Humphrey, the vice president under the hated Lyndon Johnson, was selected to run against Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon. The Vietnam war continued to rage under Nixon with secret bombings in Laos and Cambodia.

In conformity with the racialism so widespread in liberal and "left" political circles today, all social ills are reduced in Seberg to racism. There is no doubt that Hoover was a racist. But Hoover, above all, was an anticommunist and a ferocious opponent of social revolution. The FBI under his direction had spied on King since the early 1960s and used intimidation and blackmail to try to "neutralize" him and the civil rights movement as a whole, considering it Communist-inspired. Though the Red Scare ostensibly ended with the exposure of Senator Joe McCarthy in the mid-1950s, combating leftist influence remained the central preoccupation of the FBI. The secret and illegal COINTELPRO operation of "surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting" all oppositional organizations, was launched in 1956, officially ended in 1979, but its practices continue to this day.

The Black Panthers' founding in Oakland, California in October 1966 quickly attracted African Americans across the country, particularly after the assassination of King, a proponent of nonviolence, 17 months later. By 1969, the organization tried to orient itself to other oppositional forces in the US, not just blacks, and to left-wing ideology. That made them more dangerous in the view of the FBI. Every means was used to destroy or neutralize the Panthers, up to and including murder, as committed in Chicago in a predawn raid against 21-year-old leader Fred Hampton in December 1969 while he was in his bed.

Kristen Stewart, with the reputation as a nonconformist, performs the title role. Her acting is impressive, but it can't compensate for the glaring problems lodged in the artistic decisions that were made well before shooting began.

The pre-credit fades from black as heavy, labored breathing gets louder. An innocent and fearful Jean Seberg appears. Wrapped in heavy chains, her angelic face grows more anxious. A camera crew zooms in on her and suddenly, intense flames surround her while her anxiety turns to terror as the fiery inferno engulfs her.

The scene symbolically establishes Seberg as a victim by evoking her first film role as the title character in Preminger's Saint Joan (adapted by Graham Greene from George Bernard Shaw's play about Joan of Arc). There is more to be said on this later.

The film opens in May 1968 with a fictionalized scene in Seberg's Paris apartment. Her husband, Romain Gary, played by Yvan Attal, is an established French novelist and diplomat. He fought with Charles de Gaulle's Free French forces during World War II and was secretary of the French delegation to the United Nations and later France's Consul General in Los Angeles, where he became involved in the film industry.

Gary is watching the television news, which, the viewer is led to assume, is reporting on the unfolding of the revolutionary May-June general strike. He tells Jean, rushing to catch a flight to Hollywood, that he can't accompany her because striking students have put up barricades at the Sorbonne. Jean is clearly uninterested and retorts that if she needs to find him, she will only have to look for the prettiest students.

Kristen Stewart in Seberg

In fact, Jean was in the US during the French May-June events. Gary was with her until very late in May when he returned to Paris while she began filming the musical Paint Your Wagon (1969).The film's Paris scene establishes once more that Jean is a victim, in this case, of infidelity.

The French popular uprising was so thoroughgoing that it challenged the capitalist de Gaulle regime, forcing the leader to flee the country at one point. Those events were very much a part of the radicalization of masses all over the world, including in the US. Gary's interest in those events was not just a passing one. He was sufficiently in sympathy with the strikes to resign his position as adviser to the French government as a result.

Why include such a sequence only to pass it over with indifference or inattention? It is needed so Jean can be placed in a subsequent scene where, on the flight to Los Angeles, black nationalist Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie) creates a disturbance, demanding seats in the upper level of the Boeing 747, and meets Seberg for the first time. (Interestingly, the 747 wasn't introduced into commercial service until 1970, over a year and a half after that scene was to have taken place.) The relationship between the two becomes the basis for the FBI's lie planted in the press about Seberg being pregnant with the baby of a Black Panther.

More significantly, in the screenplay's most absurd veering from the truth, the first few minutes of the film introduce Jack Solomon (Jack O'Connell), a fictional and improbable "good guy" FBI agent. Jack is the agent who first requests permission from his superiors for full round-the-clock surveillance on Seberg, but then quickly (too quickly, unrealistically) becomes the conscience of the story as he develops a peculiar, bordering on perverse, empathy with his target.

Much of the drama in Seberg revolves around this rather silly invention. Jack's foil is his brutish and racist fellow agent Carl (Vince Vaughn). In a scene at Carl's home, Jack and his wife Linette (Margaret Qually) have been invited to dinner. Before dinner, Carl shows Jack a pornographic flyer, a cartoon of a black man and a white woman, drawn as a pig, having sex, under a racial expletive in large bold letters. Later, sitting down around the dining table, Carl proceeds to emotionally abuse each of his family members. He is a stereotypical monster.

It is Carl, after listening to a surveillance tape of Seberg saying she is pregnant, who proposes she be "neutralized" by leaking the story to local gossip columnists that she is having a Black Panther's child. When Jack gets wind of the scheme, he barges into a meeting of local FBI chief Frank Scully, played by the wonderful character actor Colm Meaney, and Carl, to voice his opposition to it.

The film presents moments of Seberg's explosive rise to fame through the eyes of the FBI. Stewart flawlessly recreates critical sequences in Seberg's early life in front of the camera, including the clip of her 1956 interview by director Otto Preminger. She prevails over almost 20,000 hopefuls in a globally publicized star search for the lead role in Preminger's upcoming Saint Joan. She shows herself to be a talented and determined—and young, not quite 18—actress who has what the renowned director calls a "captivating personality."

The film refers to Jean's sympathy for the cause of equality, displayed when she insisted on joining the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) at the age of 14, defying her father's warning that people would think she was a Communist. This was 1951 or 1952, at the height of the Red Scare.

The film journeys into fantasy when Seberg declares (during a contrived press conference after a miscarriage caused by the emotional anxiety resulting from the FBI's dirty tricks and attacks on her): "We are all responsible. We are all culpable. I don't pretend to have all the answers, but if we refuse to accept the lies, I believe one day the truth will be revealed." The speech is meant to be moving, but it is largely brainless.

Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg in Breathless

At any rate, being deeply affected by the press conference (which never occurred) in the FBI's offices, Solomon (the agent who never existed) listens to a surveillance tape where Hakim advises winning "one mind at a time. If you can change one mind you can change the world." In response, Solomon carries out a subversive scheme against the FBI that sets up a stupidly improbable denouement in which Solomon and Seberg meet.

The overlaid text in the epilogue implies that COINTELPRO was discovered and ended by Congress. In fact, US government spying on opposition forces has reached new and unprecedented heights in our day. Another implication is that Seberg's death in 1979 was somehow "suspect." The truth is, she was driven into paranoia and mental instability by continuing FBI and media attacks on her and her son. If the reader is interested in a more truthful account of Seberg's life, Garry McGee's Jean Seberg—Breathless, is one of the several biographies out there.

Stars use 4-goal 2nd to beat Avs, take 2-0 lead in series - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:42 PM PDT

EDMONTON, Alberta — From a goal off the chest to another that may have just crossed the line — depending who's asked — the Dallas Stars were getting the big bounces and breaks.

That's what it takes this time of year.

Alexander Radulov scored on a deflection off his upper chest as part of a four-goal second period and the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Monday night to take a 2-0 lead in the second-round series.

Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Joe Pavelski and Radek Faksa revitalized the Stars by scoring in a 43-second span during a 5-on-3 advantage.

Dallas was just getting started. Radulov knocked in the go-ahead goal when a shot bounced off a stick, into his chest and over Colorado goaltender Pavel Francouz. Esa Lindell then added another with 46 seconds remaining in the second when he knocked in a rebound to make it 4-2.

Now that one the Avalanche wouldn't mind a little more explanation. The officials took a look to make sure the puck wasn't frozen by Francouz before Lindell poked it in — or if it even went in at all. The call on the ice was confirmed.

"I don't know how he sees the puck is across the line," Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog said. "I don't know how he points at the net. I think he realized pretty quickly he messed up. Once he starts watching the video replay, I think he realizes he just went off Esa Lindell's reaction and pointed to the net. ... Excited to see what the explanation will be."

This is how it went from Lindell's vantage point: "Shot it there and went for the rebound," he explained.

Bottom line, the Avalanche couldn't recover from the second-period meltdown.

"Our resolve wasn't where it needed to be after a bad break, a bad penalty," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "The game's not over. We have to be better."

The Avalanche pulled Francouz with around two minutes left in the game, but couldn't score. Jamie Oleksiak added an empty-netter with 10 seconds left as the Stars won their fifth straight game.

"We believe in ourselves, that's the main thing for our club," Radulov said. "We're going to play to the end."

Anton Khudobin stopped 38 shots in another solid performance. He came up big in the first by only allowing a goal from Nathan MacKinnon, despite Colorado out-shooting Dallas, 20-6.

MacKinnon also had an assist on Mikko Rantanen's second-period goal. MacKinnon has a point in all 10 postseason games for Colorado, tying Joe Sakic (1996) and Marian Stastny (1982) for the franchise's longest points streak to begin a postseason.

Francouz made 22 saves in taking over for an injured Philipp Grubauer, who along with defenseman Erik Johnson remains out indefinitely.

The 30-year-old Francouz looked sharp until the second period.

That's when the Stars were ignited by a two-man advantage. Pavelski scored on a nifty cross-ice pass from Radulov. Then, Faksa knocked in another to tie the game.

"It was huge," Pavelski said. "Gave us some confidence for sure."

Soon after, Colorado went on a 5-on-3 advantage, but the team couldn't capitalize. It was another big momentum swing.

Dallas went ahead on a wild play down low. Jamie Benn sent in a shot near the goal that glanced off the stick of Colorado defenseman Samuel Girard, bounced off Radulov and into the net. Radulov also had two goals during the Stars' 5-3 win in Game 1.

MacKinnon scored a power play goal in the first period and Rantanen added another power-play goal in the second. MacKinnon has seven goals and 11 assists to lead the NHL playoffs in points.

Following the series opener, Bednar called out the forwards not on the top line -- MacKinnon, Rantanen and Landeskog -- for their intensity level. He wanted more or promised changes.

Changes could be in order for Game 3 on Wednesday just to get the team back on track.

"There's no quit in this group," Landeskog said.

Colorado will be without Grubauer indefinitely after he was hurt three minutes into the second period of Game 1 and needed assistance to get off the ice. Johnson later left following a collision with Dallas forward Blake Comeau.

Kevin Connauton replaced Johnson on the blue line. Connauton's only playoff experience was in 2014 while with Dallas.

NOTES: Stars D Miro Heiskanen picked up his 11th assist of the playoffs. ... G Ben Bishop and D Stephen Johns remain "unfit to play," Stars coach Rick Bowness said. ... Colorado F Matt Calvert was ruled out with an injury. Bednar remains hopeful he will soon be available. ... Rantanen and Landeskog had assists on MacKinnon's goal. ... Colorado was 2 of 8 on the power play.

BTS Brought Even More Joy With the B-Side 'Dynamite' Music Video - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT

When BTS released the "Dynamite" music video on Aug. 21, we thought that was the most serotonin-providing video in existence. We were wrong. On Aug. 24, BTS released a B-side "Dynamite" music video. Somehow, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook are even more chaotic and joy-filled than they were in the original.

The original 'Dynamite' music video broke YouTube records.

The Korean band released the digital single "Dynamite" and a music video for the song on Aug. 21. At its premiere, the "Dynamite" music video had 3 million concurrent viewers, setting a record for the biggest YouTube premiere of all time.

In 20 minutes, the K-pop group's music video reached 10 million views, becoming the fastest music video to do so. It surpassed 20 million views in an hour and 14 minutes.

The day after the video's release, it was confirmed by YouTube and Big Hit Entertainment that the "Dynamite" music video became the most-viewed YouTube video in the first 24 hours. It achieved 101.1 million views within 24 hours, beating the previous record by over 14 million views.

The group released a new music video

A few days after releasing the original, BTS released a B-side music video of "Dynamite." A press release from Big Hit Entertainment says: "The music video follows BTS on the same filming set, but in different angles from the original version. Viewers are able to see BTS in action, all of them having fun together in joyful vibes."

While the B-side music video features the same outfits, lyrics, and bright colors, it is even more joy-filled than the original. This is largely due to the BTS members' natural chemistry. A great deal of the new footage shows the members genuinely laughing together as they improvise choreography.

ARMY loves the new music video

Based on the records broken with the original, it is obvious that fans love the "Dynamite" music video. However, it seems that some fans love the B-side video even more. Already, the B-side music video has over 14 million views.

On Twitter, fans trended hashtags and phrases related to the new music video release. BTS released "Dynamite" to give fans positivity during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and the B-side music video spreads that happiness even more.

"The way I laughed and cried from this B-side!!! They have no idea how much joy they've given us during this moment. Thank you so much, @BTS_twt! (also, if it's not too much to ask for, I don't mind having b-sides for everything…) #DynamiteBsideMV," one fan tweeted.

Another fan tweeted, "I can honestly say that nothing has brought me more joy than the B-side MV. They all look so happy and handsome. I can't stop smiling. #BTS_Dynamite#BTS@BTS_twt."

"THE BOYS BEING CHAOTIC AND HAVING FUN TOGETHER IN THE DYNAMITE B-SIDE VERSION MADE ME SO HAPPY. IT REALLY FEELS THE ENERGY WE ALL NEEDED THIS YEAR. I LOVE BTS FOR WORKING SO HARD IN EVERYTHING THEY DO JUST TO SEE ARMY HAPPY #DynamiteBsideMV@BTS_twt," wrote a Twitter user.

For fans wondering what is next for "Dynamite," BTS will perform the song at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 30.

Just when it appeared the Avalanche might go into the intermission down a goal, they turned the puck over and it led to a score by Lindell. The officials took a look to make sure the puck wasn't frozen by Francouz before it went in. The call on the ice was confirmed.

MacKinnon scored a power play goal in the first period and Rantanen added another power-play goal in the second. MacKinnon has seven goals and 11 assists to lead the NHL playoffs in points.

Following the series opener, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar called out the forwards not on the top line -- MacKinnon, Rantanen and captain Gabriel Landeskog -- for their intensity level. He wanted more or promised changes.

Changes could be in order for Game 3 on Wednesday.

NOTES: Stars D Miro Heiskanen picked up his 11th assist of the playoffs. ... G Ben Bishop and D Stephen Johns remain ''unfit to play,'' Stars coach Rick Bowness said. ... Colorado F Matt Calvert was ruled out with an injury. Bednar remains hopeful he will soon be available. ... Rantanen and Landeskog had assists on MacKinnon's goal. ... Colorado was 2 of 8 on the power play.

Sofia Vergara Speaks Out After Controversial Ellen DeGeneres Interviews Resurface - Yahoo Singapore News

Photo credit: Amy Sussman - Getty Images

From Good Housekeeping

  • Sofia Vergara is defending a controversial clip of a series of interviews from The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
  • In the clip, Ellen is poking fun at Sofia's accent.

Sofia Vergara does not want to be dragged into Ellen DeGeneres' controversy. Ever since the news broke that The Ellen DeGeneres Show is facing sexual misconduct and "toxic work environment" allegations, people have been speaking out about their experiences on the daytime talk show. Since Ellen is now under scrutiny, clips from her past are beginning to resurface. One in particular includes interviews with Sofia.

In the above clip, Ellen is clearly mocking Sofia's accent and her ability to speak English. "I mean literally, you've been on this show [Modern Family] for 10 years and your accent has gotten worse. How is that possible?" she asked in one interview. In another, she said, "Your English has gotten better, I have to say." Sofia played it off and responded, "Her English?" while pointing to fellow guest, Reese Witherspoon.

These clips don't exactly make Ellen look good, but Sofia explained that Ellen wasn't being offensive. "Two comedians having fun with each other to entertain. I was never a victim guys, I was always in on the joke," she tweeted while also sharing a clip from a different interview.

Regardless of the comments, the show is still facing an investigation and Ellen's job might be in jeopardy. Variety reported that executive producer Ed Glavin is expected to exit his role, and Warner Bros. released a statement saying there will be staffing changes:

"We have identified several staffing changes, along with appropriate measures to address the issues that have been raised, and are taking the first steps to implement them. Warner Bros. and Ellen DeGeneres are all committed to ensuring a workplace based on respect and inclusion. We are confident this course of action will lead us to the right way forward for the show."

Werner and Havertz will benefit from Chelsea moves, says Marsch - Goal

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:42 PM PDT

Red Bull Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch is confident that Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic will form a lethal partnership at Chelsea next season.

Marsch previously worked with Werner at RB Leipzig and the striker joined the Blues from Salzburg's sister club in a deal worth £47.5 million ($59m) earlier this summer.

After deciding against competing in the knockout stage of the Champions League with his former team, the Germany international will be available for selection for Chelsea's opening Premier League game of the season, on September 14 away at Brighton, along with fellow new signing Hakim Ziyech, who has arrived from Ajax.

Marsch is in no doubt that that the Blues have got themselves a bargain, as the American coach feels that Werner is just as suited to English football as Pulisic, the former Borussia Dortmund winger who went from strength to strength last season.

"Timo is an incredible talent and an aggressive attacker and a great scorer and an intelligent footballer," Marsch told Goal about the former Leipzig striker. "Chelsea, for a relatively cheap price, have picked up a world-class player.

"I am really excited for Timo because a lot of Germans don't leave. I am really excited that Timo is moving outside of his comfort zone to challenge himself at a different level and I think that he will be rewarded for it in his career.

"He is a cut-throat attacker and the potential for him and Christian to be a good pair is really, really high."

The Blues are also closing in on Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, who will cost between €80m (£71m/$94m) and €100m (£87m/$118m).

Marsch believes that, like Werner, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder will benefit from a Premier League transfer: "Havertz is another player that I think needs to get out of his comfort zone and he has major potential.

"What I learned about Germans is that they don't like being out of their comfort zone; they like defining things, having rules and being uncomfortable is not always the best thing.

"I really think the more talents that challenge themselves in a different culture will be rewarded for it."

Jesse Marsch quote GFX

Amid all of the excitement over Chelsea's new signings, the form of the 21-year-old U.S. Men's National Team captain Pulisic after the coronavirus-enforced break is also cause for optimism.

Pulisic starred for Frank Lampard's side during the closing stages of the 2019-20 campaign, until suffering a hamstring injury in the FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

Fellow American Marsch has also been monitoring Tyler Adams' progress, after he scored Leipzig's winner in the 2-1 Champions League quarter-final win over Atletico Madrid.

He thinks that the young duo is destined to achieve great things in the European game and will, thus, inspire young players across the U.S. to fully believe in themselves.

"I know Tyler much better than Christian but they are very close friends," Marsch continued. "I have spoken to Tyler about Christian and I have met Christian a number of times. What makes these two young talents very special is their fearlessness. They have self-belief.

"The beauty of it is not arrogance, it is just steeped in deep confidence and their belief they can be the best. They came to Europe at young ages to test themselves, show and challenge themselves. They have been rewarded for it, both of them.

"They are both still 21 years old. The future is bright for both of them. I am very happy that Christian made the jump to Chelsea because I think that environment is even more challenging for him.

Jesse Marsch quote GFX

"I know Tyler Adams well and he is only getting better. He's growing and he is going to be a bigger leader, player and man. I am excited to continue to see them grow.

"There is certainly more and more talent coming from the States and it is inspiring more and more people as well."

Recent successes among young USMNT players in Europe comes after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2018.

There is increased hope that the next generation can put things right but Marsch believes that his country paid the price for dropping the ball in player and coach development.

"The number one purpose I have right now is as a fan and supporter, whether that's for the entire national team programme or for Gregg Berhalter, is to help our national team get back to being successful," he explained.

"I'm often asked about my involvement or my future. If the U.S. national team calls me at any point or any day, then I will take that call or return it immediately because of the passion I have for football and our country.

"It is the responsibility that I think we all have. We will see what happens. Right now, I am enjoying this project fully. But I hope to one day be involved in the national team in whatever capacity."

Jesse Marsch quote GFX

When pressed on what needs to be done to maximise the potential of the USMNT, Marsch had clear ideas: "I think, first, the training environments for young players needs to continue to get better. Frankly, that comes from coaching.

"In the past five years, we have really upped our coaching education. If I am being totally honest, then the level of coaching in our country for the last 20 years has not been good enough. That's at five-year-old level, 10-year-old level and professional level.

"So, we need to continue to grow the standard. Sometimes that has meant importing expertise but I think we can still grow the right talents from a coaching perspective in our country.

Article continues below

"Then, the proper playing environments that we create at younger ages means that we can continue to competitively produce better players that are 14, 15 and 16-year-olds.

"We are very impatient in the U.S. and as the game becomes more global, our lack of patience is exposed more and more but we have made great progress.

"I am very proud of our progress at so many different levels. And it is coming. We are going to get better; we are going to grow. It is just our American mentality means we want it now."

BTS Made Everyone's Day and Dropped 2 New Versions of 'Dynamite' - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

'Dynamite' brings joy to listeners

BTS released their new single "Dynamite" in an effort to give people something lighthearted and encouraging during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

"We have prepared a new single for ARMY, set for August 21. We are preparing an album for the second half of this year, but decided to first release a single because we wanted to reach our fans as soon as possible. Due to COVID-19, people around the world have been going through tough times and we wanted to share some positive energy with our fans," said the members during a VLIVE.

The song was written by David Stewart and Jessica Agombar, and it features English lyrics. Combined with the happiness-infused music video, BTS brings joy to listeners around the world with the song.

"'Cause I, I, I'm in the stars tonight / So watch me bring the fire and set the night alight (Hey) / Shining through the city with a little funk and soul / So I'ma light it up like dynamite, woah," the group sings.

BTS released additional versions of the song

"Dynamite" is a disco-pop song, providing '70s nostalgia and comfort. Following the release of the original, BTS released two new versions of the song that capitalize on the song's positive elements.

According to a press release from Big Hit Entertainment, "Each version shows a different rendition to the Disco Pop track – while the minimal acoustic track puts at the very forefront the members' vocals, the EDM is a rearrangement of the original song that maximizes the upbeat and fun vibes."

The K-pop group also released a B-side music video for "Dynamite" on Aug. 24. The new music video shows alternate angles and puts an emphasis on the fun BTS experienced while filming the "Dynamite" music video.

'Dynamite' is dominating iTunes

Since its release on Aug. 21, "Dynamite" has remained at No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes Top Songs chart. It also became the fastest song to ever reach 100 No. 1s on iTunes and did so within eight hours. With "Dynamite," BTS achieved their fifth song to ever reach 100 iTunes No. 1s.

Now, the original, acoustic, EDM, and instrumental versions are all occupying the top four spots on the iTunes Top Songs chart in the U.S. It's clear from this result that fans are loving all of the different versions of "Dynamite" and the uniqueness each remix brings to the song.

On Spotify, "Dynamite" debuted at No. 1 on Spotify's daily Global Top 50 chart. With 7,778,950 streams, BTS surpassed Taylor Swift's record with "Cardigan" and now have the biggest Spotify debut of 2020.

The "Dynamite" music video broke the record for the biggest YouTube premiere of all time with 3 million concurrent viewers. It also holds the record for the most-viewed video within its first 24 hours with 101.1 million views.

Trump's approval ratings so far are unusually stable – and deeply partisan - Pew Research Center

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

(Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
(Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

More than three and a half years into his administration, President Donald Trump's approval ratings have remained remarkably stable. There also has been a wider gap between Republicans' and Democrats' views of Trump than for any other U.S. president in the modern era of polling.

Trump approval more polarized than for any other president since Eisenhower

About four-in-ten Americans (38%) approve of Trump's job performance, while 59% disapprove, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. Although Trump experienced a slight bump in approval ratings at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak – 45% of the public in March and 44% of the public in April said they approved of the way Trump was handling his job – his approval ratings have settled back to where they were before the pandemic hit the United States.

Trump's relatively steady ratings are unique among recent presidents. And while his ratings are also the most polarized along party lines in the modern era, this divide represents a continuation of a trend seen in assessments of recent presidents, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand Donald Trump's job approval ratings in a historical context. For this analysis, we looked at yearly averages for presidential job approval based on annual totals of Pew Research Center surveys from 1993 to 2020 and Gallup organization data from 1953 to 1993. Since 2017, Pew Research Center surveys on Trump's job approval have been conducted on the Center's nationally representative Americans Trends Panel (read more about the ATP's methodology); surveys conducted between 1993 and 2017 (and earlier Gallup surveys) were conducted by telephone.

Over the course of his presidency to date, an average of 87% of Republicans have approved of Trump's handling of the job, compared with an average of just 6% of Democrats. This 81-percentage-point gap is far larger than the partisan division in average ratings for Obama (67 points) and Bush (58 points) during their presidencies. (These growing partisan divides are consistent with widening divides in views of members of the opposing party, and with deep partisan divisions on political values, many of which are far more pronounced than in past decades.)

The growing partisan gap in assessments of U.S. presidents has been driven primarily by more negative ratings among members of the party that's out of the White House. The 6% of Democrats who approve of Trump is lower than the 14% of Republicans who approved of Obama and the 23% of Democrats who approved of Bush during their respective administrations. Out-party ratings of the president were even higher in previous decades: For example, an average of 31% of Democrats approved of Ronald Reagan's job performance.

Trump's first-term approval ratings are lower than those of several recent presidents

Looking at individual surveys, Trump's ratings stand out for their stability.

Throughout his first term, Trump's approval rating has been quite stable compared with his predecessors

While Trump's ratings today are about the same as they have been throughout his years in office (his rating has consistently fallen between 38% and 45% and hovered around 40% for much of his term), other presidents' ratings saw far more change.

Obama's initial approval rating of 64% dropped off in the first few months and largely remained in the mid to high 40s for much of his first term. Obama's approval rating peaked at 56% in May 2011 – immediately following the killing of Osama Bin Laden – and sat at 50% in the summer of 2012.

George W. Bush's approval ratings moved sharply higher in September of his first year – they reached 86% in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks – before steadily declining to 46% in July 2004.

Approval ratings for Bill Clinton and Reagan moved lower during their first two years in office. But their ratings had rebounded by the summer preceding their reelection, with slightly more than half of Americans approving of each president's performance.

George H.W. Bush's ratings were particularly volatile. They improved in his first year before turning lower and then rising again to a high of 89% following the end of the Gulf War in 1991. Then they steadily fell to just 29% in the summer before his loss to Clinton in the 1992 election.

Trump's job approval rating at this point in his presidency is lower than that of all of his recent predecessors except George H.W. Bush. The 38% of Americans who approve of Trump's performance today compares with 29% for Bush in 1992. However, the two presidents' disapproval rating is similar: 58% disapprove of Trump's performance today, compared with 60% for Bush in 1992.

Republicans overwhelmingly approve of Trump, along with a narrower majority of GOP-leaning independents

Trump's approval rating is broadly positive among independents who say they lean toward the Republican Party, though not quite as high as among self-identified Republicans. As of August 2020, 62% of GOP leaners say they approve of the way Trump is handling his job in office, compared with 86% of Republican identifiers.

By contrast, just 5% of Democrats and a nearly identical share of Democratic leaners (6%) currently approve of how Trump his handling his job in office.

Coronavirus: China 'has been vaccinating key workers since July' - Minster FM

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:08 PM PDT

Published at 7:58am 24th August 2020. (Updated at 2:37pm 24th August 2020)

China has been giving experimental coronavirus vaccines to some key workers since July, a government official has said.

The vaccine's use has so far been limited to people who work for state-owned companies who need to go abroad, Zheng Zhongwei, of China's National Health Commission, told state media.

Some medical workers, border officials and those who work at food markets could be offered the vaccine in the autumn or winter, Mr Zheng added.

Its "emergency" use was approved by Beijing last month and was rolled out on 22 July, he added.

There are currently 170 separate efforts to create a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) - but none have yet been approved.

Professor Chris Whitty, England's chief medical officer, said yesterday it is unlikely that a coronavirus vaccine will be widely available before winter 2021.

The "emergency" vaccine being used by the Chinese government appears to be the country's first - outside of clinical trials.

Mr Zheng told state media CCTV on Saturday: "We've drawn up a series of plan packages, medical consent forms, side effect monitoring plans, rescuing plans, compensation plans, to make sure the emergency use is well regulated and monitored."

He also said the vaccine programme could be "scaled up" to prevent outbreaks in autumn and winter.

But the rest of the world has been largely sceptical about China's vaccine claims.

Papua New Guinea border officials recently refused entry to a group of Chinese nationals because they had participated in vaccine trials, The Australian reported.

In the US, President Donald Trump is trying to fast-track the approval of the Oxford University vaccine for use before the election in November.

He is looking to get the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to authorise emergency use in October - a month before the vote, according to the Financial Times.

BTS Share Playful Alternate ‘Dynamite’ Video - uDiscover Music

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Following the record-breaking video premiere of "Dynamite" last week, BTS has returned with a "B-side" version of the visual, which features alternate shots, bloopers, and plenty of playful, candid moments from the South Korean septet.

According to the official announcement, "viewers are able to see BTS in action, all of them having fun together in joyful vibes." And joyful it is – based on the video's footage, the band had a complete blast filming "Dynamite."

Fans were equally enthusiastic to watch the visual for the group's first fully English-language single. Over three million viewers tuned in to YouTube to catch the live premiere of "Dynamite" – nearly doubling a record previously held by fellow K-pop stars BLACKPINK for their "How You Like That" video.

Following its premiere, "Dynamite" was streamed over 101.1 million times on its first day, breaking YouTube's record for the most views in 24 hours. That record was also previously held by BLACKPINK, who garnered 86.3 million streams after the June premiere of "How You Like That."

This Sunday, August 30, fans can catch BTS performing "Dynamite" live at the 37th annual MTV Video Music Awards. The group, who are performing at the awards show for the very first time, will join an all-star line-up of talent, including Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Doja Cat. The group is also up for three awards, including Best K-Pop, Best Pop, and Best Choreography for their "On" video.

Coming up, the band is looking forward to the premiere of their latest concert film, Break The Silence: The Movie. The film, which debuts in the US on September 24, follows the pop stars on their 2019 "Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour." BTS' first worldwide stadium tour included stops at such iconic venues as London's Wembley Stadium, Chicago's Soldier Field, New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.

KU fraternity at center of viral video storm issues comment - KWCH

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) - A University of Kansas fraternity at the center of a viral Facebook video firestorm that erupted over the weekend issued a statement late Sunday giving its side of an incident in which a man said his car was blocked and he was splashed with alcohol after he made a wrong turn into the fraternity's driveway.

In a tweet released Sunday night, the Gamma-Omicron Chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity said a man "claiming to have made a wrong turn videotaped the members of Kappa Sigma for a period in excess of 5 minutes in our neighboring sorority's parking lot."

The fraternity's tweet said the incident occurred Saturday evening.

The Kappa Sigma tweet continued that when the man was "confronted by our membership for maintaining his presence on private property, he became hostile, used aggressive language, and threatened to run over our members."

The man, Jacob Schooler, told 13 NEWS on Sunday that he was on his way home and took a wrong turn that led him to the fraternity house.

Schooler said he started recording a gathering after seeing a group of individuals who he said appeared to be drunk outside the fraternity house.

Schooler says he was trying to leave when some of the individuals at the gathering blocked his car and prevented it from leaving, while one of them threw a drink into his car.

Kappa Sigma's tweet said the fraternity hasn't yet validated the individual's claim that a beverage was thrown at him.

"If determined that is the case," the Kappa Sigma tweet said, "that is an unacceptable action for which we apologize, and the members responsible will be held accountable by the fraternity.

The tweet also said members present in the lawn of the fraternity house "are all residents of the Chapter House and acted in compliance Douglas County guidelines pertaining to people residing together. No outside guests have been or are to be allowed on the property in accordance with current University of Kansas guidance.

"Our members were outside to welcome new sorority pledges to campus, at the request of sorority chapters, as other fraternities did similarly," the tweet said.

The Kappa Sigma facility is private property and has as its primary point of access a private drive owned and maintained by multiple property owners. The fraternity house is located at 1045 Emery Road, just northwest of the KU campus.

The tweet continued, "While it is regrettable that this incident occurred, it is equally regrettable that individuals have subsequently chosen to invade the privacy of law-abiding individuals residing on their property, including inflicting property damage upon our house this morning, presumably prompted by the video this statement references."

The tweet said the treatment of the fraternity house director over the past 24 hours was "even more regrettable." The tweet said the fraternity house director has "the unenviable task of ensuring the Chapter House is sanitized twice daily, that members are in compliance with local ordinances and CDC guidance while attempting to provide the college experience these young men are seeking to obtain."

The tweet added that all of the Kappa Sigma fraternity's in-house residents have been tested for COVID-19, and "none have received a positive result."

However, University of Kansas on Sunday night issued a cease and desist order to Kappa Sigma and Phi Kappa Psi fraternities who are accused of violating COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.

Douglas Girod, KU's chancellor posted a message to the community that said in part, "We are aware of social activities over the weekend hosted by KU students in violation of county regulations and university policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have issued cease-and-desist orders to two fraternities – Kappa Sigma and Phi Kappa Psi – and issued 14-day public health bans for the members of these organization."

Girod added, "We will not tolerate selfish and irresponsible behavior that puts the health and safety of our community at risk; that disrespects staff, faculty and students who have worked to prepare our campuses for reopening; that jeopardizes the long-term viability of the university; and that recklessly disregards the authorities of the university, city, and county."

China secretly vaccinating key workers with mysterious new drug since July - Daily Express

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT

The keyworkers involved include frontline medical staff and border control inspectors. Zheng Zhongwei, a senior official from the national health commission, revealed at the weekend the vaccine had been secretly approved on July 22. Mr Zheng explained the swift distribution of the new vaccine in an official statement that said: "There are clear provisions in Article 20 of our country's vaccine law.

"When a major public health incident occurs, the National Health Commission submits an application for emergency use of vaccines, and the State Food and Drug Administration organises experts to evaluate and agree to the National Health Commission for emergency use of vaccines within a certain scale and within a certain limited time".

The leader of the vaccine research and development team in China said the next phase of inoculation with the vaccine would begin in the autumn and winter.

He explained this would be in order to create "an immunity barrier".

He added: "Once we build up an immune barrier for medical staff, personnel involved in basic operation of the city, such as those in the farmers market, transportation, and in some service industries could be eligible for the vaccine.

The vaccine has gone through phase 3 clinical trials that were conducted in the UAE, Peru, Morocco, and Argentina.

In June, Beijing approved the use of a different vaccine for the People's Liberation Army.

The vaccine was rushed through "military specially-needed drug approval".

China can create vaccines on a huge scale.

The country has 40 manufacturers that can create as many as one billion doses of a specific vaccine in a much shorter amount of time than other nations.

The effects of these trial vaccines have not been reported.
It is unclear if the vaccine went through the most stringent clinical trials.
China maintains it has relatively few domestic cases of coronavirus, stating that most of the recent cases have been imported from overseas.

Mr Zheng said: "Most cases in China now are imported, so border officials are a high-risk group."

Man Utd-linked Maddison signs new four-year Leicester contract - Goal

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:42 PM PDT

James Maddison has signed a new four-year contract with Leicester, ending speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

Manchester United were among the sides to have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old England international, who joined the Foxes from Norwich in 2018.

Maddison has played 76 times for Leicester in all competitions since then, scoring 16 goals and registering 10 assists.

Maddison told the club's official website: "I'm so happy to sign a new contract for this football club. It's an incredibly exciting time to be a Leicester City player with so many positive things happening on and off the pitch and I'm delighted to be part of that.

"What we've achieved as a club this season is a huge step forward for us and I know there's so much more to come from this team.

"I've enjoyed every moment since joining Leicester City. The supporters have been incredible to me and we've a fantastic set of players in that dressing room who are determined to show what we're capable of doing together in both Europe and the Premier League next season."

Maddison was signed after a hugely impressive spell with Norwich in the Championship, and he has emerged as one of England's most exciting young midfielders since making the step up to the Premier League.

He was rewarded for his good form with a first senior international appearance in November last year, though the coronavirus pandemic has so far prevented him from adding to his first England cap.

Maddison's own form has also contributed to that, with he and the Foxes struggling to replicate their early-season displays in 2020.

Maddison's last goal for the club came in a 3-0 win over Newcastle on New Year's Day, and he hasn't made a single assist in this calendar year.

Article continues below

There is, therefore, some pressure on him and on Brendan Rodgers' side as a whole to start the 2020-21 Premier League season quickly.

The Foxes get their season underway with a trip to newly promoted West Brom on September 12, with their first home fixture against Burnley seven days later.

They are likely to go into those games without left-back Ben Chilwell, who is closing in on a £50 million ($65m) move to Chelsea.
