Petry's goal in 3rd lifts Canadiens past Penguins again - USA TODAY Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:42 PM PDT TORONTO (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens weren't even supposed to be here. All but eliminated from playoff contention, they'd shipped out key veterans at the trade deadline and were already focused on next season when COVID-19 forced the NHL to pause in mid-March. The league's 24-team restart gave Montreal a second life, and a roster not given much of a chance in this tournament is now one win from adding an incredible chapter to an unbelievable year. Jeff Petry scored 5:33 into the third period as the Canadiens rallied from two goals down and beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in Game 3 on Wednesday night, pushing the Penguins to the brink of elimination in the best-of-five series. "We've just done it by working hard," said Montreal coach Claude Julien, who shook up his lines in the second period with his team down 3-1. "At the end of the day, we know where the experience is. The only way we can counter that is with our work ethic and our commitment and desire. "We lack experience compared to the other team, but we're trying to make it up with our compete level." Shea Weber had a goal and two assists for Montreal, Paul Byron added a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Drouin also scored. Ben Chariot also had had assists. Carey Price stopped 30 shots for the Canadiens — the 12th seed in the Eastern Conference as part of the NHL's 24-team restart to its pandemic-delayed season. Montreal can advance to the normal first round with 16 teams with win in Game 4 on Friday. Patric Hornqvist, Jason Zucker and Teddy Blueger scored for fifth-seeded Pittsburgh, which led 3-1 after Blueger's goal 5:34 into the second. Matt Murray finished with 27 saves. "We just made a few mistakes," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "This time of year, those mistakes are magnified. They're opportunistic. They're waiting for those mistakes and they capitalized on them. "We might have been guilty of getting a little too loose there with the lead, and that changed pretty quick." Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher suited up after briefly leaving the Penguins' 3-1 victory in Game 2, but was clearly laboring at times with an undisclosed lower-body injury. "As long as you can help the team, you're going to be out there," Gallagher said. "I would never put myself in a situation where I'm gonna hurt the team." Drouin pulled the Canadiens to 3-2 at 10:13 of the middle period when he redirected Chiarot's point shot past Murray. Byron tied it with 4:10 left in the period, just seconds after a penalty on Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin expired. Byron deftly moved Nick Suzuki's rebound from his skate to his stick and sneaked a second-effort wraparound just over the goal line. Joel Armia nearly gave Montreal the lead early in the third but his one-timer pinballed around the crease during a power play. However the Canadiens kept up the pressure, and Petry, who provided the overtime winner in Game 1, roofed a shot past Murray's ear from a sharp angle for their second lead of the game. "There's no bad shot and at this time of the year," Petry said. "I was able to pick my spot." The Penguins, who had the seventh-best record in the NHL when the season was suspended in mid-March, pushed as the period wore on, with Price denying Kris Letang down low. Pittsburgh went on the power play with 3:32 left in regulation, but Price handled Sidney Crosby's one-timer comfortably without giving up a rebound on the only shot against. The Penguins pulled Murray and continued to press, but weren't able to get the equalizer. Montreal jumped on the scoreboard first in front 4:57 into the game as Weber fired his third shot of a chaotic sequence by a down-and-out Murray. With the Canadiens already down a man, Weber buried Hornqvist in the corner and was going to be assessed a penalty. Montreal's captain seemed to be waiting for Malkin to give the puck away for a 5-on-3, but he instead whipped a cross-ice pass to Hornqvist, who made no mistake at 8:40. Pittsburgh stayed on the power play with Weber now in the box, and Zucker made it 2-1 just 59 seconds later when Bryan Rust delivered a sneaky feed in the slot for the winger to rip a shot upstairs. "You're playing a team that knows exactly what to do to get back into a series," Julien said of the Penguins, who won the Stanley Cup in both 2016 and 2017. "We're aware of that, so we need to be playing our best game come Game 4. We've got to be ready. "We can't get overconfident, but we've got to have the confidence to be able to close it off." NOTES: Pittsburgh C Jared McCann sat out in favor of Sam Lafferty. ... The Canadiens made one lineup change with Jake Evans swapping in for Jordan Weal on the fourth line. Evans was drilled into the boards by Tanev in the second period and did not return. ... The Canadiens finished 0 for 5 on the power play to fall to 0 for 10 in the series. ... The Penguins went 2 for 3 on the man-advantage to improve to 3 for 15. Operation Warp Speed adviser says media criticism slows coronavirus fight - CNN Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT Former pharma executive Dr. Moncef Slaoui, chief adviser to Operation Warp Speed, complained on a US Health and Human Services Department podcast that he never expected to encounter what he considers unfavorable media coverage. "I'm amazed that I'm being attacked on a personal basis in a way that, frankly, distracts my energy and energy of all the teams that we're working together with to deliver, and therefore decreases our chances or the speed with which we try to help humanity and the country resolve and address this issue," Slaoui said on the podcast, released on Friday. Michael Caputo, the assistant secretary for public affairs at HHS and host of the podcast, started out inviting listeners to "enjoy my learning curve as much as I'm enjoying it." "I came to this job without a real deep knowledge of health care," Caputo added. Then Caputo asked Slaoui about his career and his appointment to head Operation Warp Speed. "And because this is the Trump administration, you don't realize it, I guess, maybe when you were offered the position, but part of the deal is you go ahead and you fasten a target on your back, don't you?" he asked. "Yes. Honestly, I think I was naïve when I made the decision," answered Slaoui, who spent 30 years at drug giant GlaxoSmithKline, including as chairman of global vaccines. After leaving Glaxo, Slaoui has worked with European venture capital firm Medicxi and been a board member of companies including vaccine developer Moderna, Intellia Therapeutics, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Swiss biotechnology and chemicals firm Lonza group, among others. "I thought that, you know, the press in particular was informing, but I [am] now convinced factually that the press has only one objective, which is to shape opinions and to distort information in a way that allows [them] to shape an opinion," Slaoui added. "And I find that unethical, extremely disappointing. And I really hope society will drive towards changing that back to more normalcy." Nonetheless, Caputo and Slaoui also said they rely on media reports. "It's much, much harder to help somebody who's already ill because they're so, as you can read in the newspapers or listen in the media, the manifestations of this disease are many, many different diseases because they depend on your health status to start with," Slaoui said. Caputo asked about reports that Slaoui, who has held shares in companies being funded by the government effort he now heads, might make money from the companies he is in now a position to promote. Federal government employees are generally required to divest themselves of any holdings they might be in a position to regulate or influence. "I'm convinced that the reporters don't want a vaccine, sir," Caputo said. Yet he said stories appear "from reporters who have trouble counting change, who are trying to count your wealth, who don't acknowledge the fact that you have accepted immense losses financially in order to take this job that pays you $1, that keeps you away from your family, that keeps you up all day long." Slaoui indicated he continues to refuse to sell his shares in Glaxo. "Any accretion in value of everything I own that has anything to do with Covid, which is my GlaxoSmithKline shares, any accretion in value by the end of my mission will look -- if there has been increasing value with it -- I'll sell those shares, and I'll give that incremental value to the NIH for research," Slaoui said. Operation Warp Speed awarded Glaxo and its partner Sanofi Pasteur $2.1 billion last week to fund a joint vaccine effort -- the largest vaccine award it has made yet. Artis, prayers: Maha BJP celebrates Ayodhya Ram Mandir bhoomipujan - Hindustan Times Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:26 PM PDT Artis, prayers: Maha BJP celebrates Ayodhya Ram Mandir bhoomipujan - Hindustan Times To mark the bhoomipujan of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held celebrations at the party office on Wednesday, with the leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis even breaking into a song popular during the 1992 rath yatra campaign. "This is a dream come true for many generations and of millions. It is a matter of great fortune and providence to be able to witness this historic moment," said Fadnavis on the occasion. The former chief minister, along with state party chief Chandrakant Patil, national joint organizational secretary V Satish, state organisational secretary Vijay Puranik, former ministers Ashish Shelar and Vinod Tawde, present at the celebration, were among several others who had participated and witnessed the 1990s BJP movement for the Ram Mandir leading upto the Rath Yatra in 1992. The leaders worshipped the framed portrait of Lord Ram, saw the bhoomipujan being done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a grand screen and participated in a programme of bhajans organised on the occasion. "I have participated in all kar sevas, I am a Ram sevak and have been involved from Day one with the Ram Janmabhoomi. This is a dream come true. The temple was destroyed in 1522 back by a general of Babur to show us that they can destroy the culture of Hindus and even Lord Ram cannot save us. Now, after so many years, Lord Ram's temple will now stand on the same very site. This is a beginning of new India and new identity for us," said Fadnavis. While speaking to a TV channel, Fadnavis taunted the Shiv Sena saying it was surprising that only two parties, the Sena and All India Majlis-e-Ittehedul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had sought e-pujan for the Ram Mandir instead of a live event. "As a Hindutva party, how do you make a demand for just e-puja; this moment has come after 490 years. It's an insult to people who have struggled, fought and lost their lives for the Ram Mandir campaign," said Fadnavis. Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh also celebrated the day across the city and the state in localities and neighbourhoods by lighting diyas and organizing Lord Ram aartis in the evenings and reciting Hanuman Chalisa in the morning. "Even though the temples haven't opened we are marking this auspicious occasion by lighting diyas outside our homes, while community events like reciting of Hanuman Chalisa and holding evening aartis is being carried out in housing societies, temple offices etc,'' said Manoj Singh, RSS karyakarta from Goregaon. 2020-08-05 18:59:00Z https://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/artis-prayers-maha-bjp-celebrates-ayodhya-ram-mandir-bhoomipujan/story-UIxrjfT99zatlizJucCCZK.html

Coronavirus: The viral rumours that were completely wrong - BBC News Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT Remember those panicky viral messages you were forwarded on WhatsApp at the start of the pandemic? They may have come as a text, voice note or blurry picture forwarded by a "friend of a friend" - and most of them were scarcely credible. Here's the truth behind a few of the most heart-stopping coronavirus rumours that we debunked at the time. 1. Tanks never arrived on the streetsWhat did the message say? In the middle of March, grainy pictures of military vehicles on highways began cropping up in WhatsApp chats and Facebook groups. They had captions like "On the M25!" and "Tanks expected in Newcastle tomorrow". They were shared with warnings about mass civil unrest that would, ostensibly, prompt a military crackdown. How viral was it? The biggest platform for these rumours was WhatsApp. Because it's private and encrypted, it's impossible to know exactly how many people saw such messages - but we can conservatively estimate they were received by tens of thousands. Weeks later, people who run local Facebook groups told the BBC that they were still seeing mentions of alleged military plans for tanks on the streets. How did we debunk it? This was initially difficult to tackle. We knew there were no tanks rolling along high streets. But we also knew the army might be deployed. And it's not uncommon to see military vehicles on public roads near army bases. However, some of the most popular photos circulating were clearly not showing scenes from the UK. The convoys were on the wrong side of the road, or the vehicles had foreign number plates. We also used reverse image searches - that's where you plug a photo into a search engine to find other copies of it online. This revealed that many of the photos had been taken long before the pandemic. In the end, the British Army did deploy during the lockdown - but to provide logistical support to the NHS, not patrol the streets in armed vehicles amid scenes of mass unrest. 2. Bodies of coronavirus victims did not pile up in ice rinksWhat did the message say? The news in the voice note was grim. Hundreds of healthy children would die every day. Ambulances wouldn't be dispatched even to severe Covid-19 cases. Bodies would be sent to "every ice-skating rink" as mortuaries filled up. The woman speaking claimed to work for the South East Coast Ambulance Service. The service was quick to dismiss the voice note as incorrect - however, it's never said whether or not the woman actually was an employee. How viral was it? Viral enough to really scare people. Hundreds of people got in touch with BBC News asking about the voice note. Many were distressed by its contents. One woman told us the message had her daughter in a total frenzy - and that neither of them knew whether it was true. It spread so widely that Public Health England made a statement calling it "fake news". How did we debunk it? There's a lot we still don't know about Covid-19, but even given the limited information available in the spring, the claims in the message were clearly preposterous. There were concerns that healthy, young people could also fall seriously ill with the virus - but the voice note suggested that a huge proportion of people dying from coronavirus would be children with no underlying conditions. Temporary mortuaries were planned - but no body was ever stored at an ice rink. The claims in the note were just not backed up by science. 3. Helicopters didn't spray disinfectant in the dead of nightWhat did the message say? It would happen in the middle of the night - a secret operation to deliver disinfectant from the air. The person behind the viral message which spread in March on Facebook and WhatsApp never explained how aerial bombardment would eliminate the virus where it spreads most of all - indoors. But still the warning came: stay inside, and close all doors and windows. How viral was it? This one wasn't just shared in the UK. It spread on social media to hundreds of thousands of people in countries across the world: Colombia, Pakistan, Spain, the Netherlands and more. Yet the time of night and number of helicopters usually stayed the same. How did we debunk it? This one was easy. Not only was the alleged plan rather useless, no formation of spraying helicopters emerged that night or any other night. In fact, this was the latest version of a persistent genre of conspiracy theories. For years, people have claimed that secret government programmes are delivering deadly chemicals from above. 4. A random doctor on a remote island did not suddenly unlock the secrets of Covid-19What did the message say? Spain's Gran Canaria island was the somewhat unlikely starting point of a WhatsApp voice note that claimed to contain insider information. The woman speaking (in English) said she picked up the tips by talking to "a colleague who has a friend" working at a hospital. She gave a very specific story about how the disease progresses, and urged people to "take a sip of warm water every twenty minutes because this… washes any of the virus that's entered your mouth into your stomach where the gastric juices will neutralise it." How viral was it? The voice note circulated around the world on apps like Whatsapp and Instagram. Dozens of readers and listeners sent it to us, asking if it was true. How did we debunk it? This one required breaking down the specific claims and comparing them to what scientists knew at the time. For one thing, coronavirus symptoms and severity are highly variable, and there did not seem to be one exact progression pattern. That's become even clearer as the pandemic has progressed, as different people have been affected in vastly different ways. There's no scientific evidence that water kills the virus - and while it certainly won't hurt, there's no success story of someone curing or preventing coronavirus by sipping liquids. 5. There was never a giant lasagne in Wembley StadiumWhat did the message say? One popular voice note that parodied other viral messages suggested the government was using Wembley Stadium as a gigantic oven. Billy McLean, a 29-year-old Londoner, laid on the sarcasm thicker than béchamel sauce as he joked about hearing of the lasagne plan from his "sister's boyfriend's brother" who "works for the Ministry of Defence". A few people may have been taken in. But more to the point, the prank was a sign of just how much the "friend of a friend with dodgy information" viral voice note had become a panicky part of pandemic culture. How viral was it? This one went so viral that it sparked copycat voice notes making similar jokes - from garlic bread being baked in the Channel Tunnel to a salad being tossed in Rome's Coliseum. How did we debunk it? Mostly by laughing along with everyone else. Is there a story we should be investigating? Email us Follow us on Twitter @BBCtrending or on Facebook. Banned protesters send #ZimbabweanLivesMatter viral - BBC News Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT Could a social media hashtag - tapping into the energy and anger of the global #BlackLivesMatter phenomenon - help achieve in Zimbabwe what years of street protests, strikes and political campaigns have so clearly failed to do? Over the last few days, in response to a particularly brutal, public, widespread, and on-going clampdown by security forces, the hashtag #ZimbabweanLivesMatter has gone viral, globally. Celebrities like rappers Ice Cube, AKA and Lecrae and actresses Thandie Newton and Pearl Thusi have expressed support for - or at least interest in - what appears to be an exploding grassroots campaign against the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the man who took over from former leader Robert Mugabe. "It captured the imagination of the population. Citizens coming together. I think this is what the whole world felt," said the novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga of the hashtag and the non-political movement behind it. She was arrested by troops last Friday, and later charged and released, after taking part in a planned street protest which the government described as an attempted "insurrection" by "terrorists". AFP
"I was in the holding cells with two men who had been tortured. One has severe kidney damage," said Ms Dangarembga, who was recently longlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize. "I am just grateful the world has taken the [#ZimbabweanLivesMatter] message seriously. Things seem to be coming to such a head now that it is impossible to look away." In hiding: 'I'm in my bunker'Zimbabwe has gone through years of profound economic hardship, hyperinflation, a coup, disputed elections, mysterious abductions, growing hunger, the recent arrival of Covid-19, and repeated, violent security crackdowns. Much of the growing global social media focus has, it seems certain, been fuelled - as elsewhere - by the spread of mobile phone technology which has enabled activists and citizens to film and broadcast footage of assaults, injuries and other abuses almost in real time. "The ferocity and broad appeal of the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter campaign has unnerved the regime," said the prominent journalist Mduduzi Mathathu, during a phone interview from his hiding place in Zimbabwe. "I'm in my bunker," he commented dryly. Mathatu's investigative reports have exposed alleged corruption by senior government officials. Last Thursday he fled from his home, fearing for his life, after being alerted about an imminent police raid. Mathathu's nephew was later abducted - allegedly by security agents - and then dumped, badly injured, on the roadside three days later. A doctor's report, seen by the BBC, confirmed the 22-year-old "had extensive bruising, huge subcutaneous tissue damage… acute kidney injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder". AFP
"Instead of listening to the legitimate concerns raised by so many Zimbabweans, President Mnangagwa has… discarded the last veneer of a reformist," Mathathu said. "His shock troops have their marching orders and we should brace for a brutal campaign against those demanding change," he warned. Indeed, in a televised address on Tuesday, President Mnangagwa made it clear that his security forces would continue to crush dissent. Portraying the anti-corruption movement as the work of "a few rogue Zimbabweans acting in league with foreign detractors", he vowed to "defend the motherland from any form of attack", and warned of "dark forces" and "machinations by destructive terrorist opposition groupings". More on Zimbabwe's crisis:A senior figure in the ruling Zanu-PF party also took to Twitter to push back against the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter hashtag. "Hashtags come and go, but Zanu-PF endures beyond the 'trending'," wrote the former cabinet minister Obert Mpofu. He has a point. "It's hard to know what will come of this," conceded Doug Coltart, a human rights lawyer who is representing two men allegedly tortured by police over the weekend. "The fact that it is doctors, lawyers, students, journalists who are being persecuted and attacked by this regime in some ways makes it an easier cause to get behind, perhaps, than when it's political activists. "But we need to see grassroots organising on a more sophisticated level for a real mass movement to emerge," Mr Coltart said, citing the relatively short-lived 2016 #ThisFlag campaign. Significantly, perhaps, the new hashtag has attracted vigorous support from opposition parties in neighbouring South Africa, with the Democratic Alliance's Msumi Maimane and Economic Freedom Fighters' Julius Malema tweeting their backing: This is in sharp contrast with the governing African National Congress (ANC) which - like many former liberation movements on the continent - has remained reluctant to criticise Zanu-PF. So where now for Zimbabwe? "We're on a precipice, a tipping point. We are [in] the place we were a couple of days before Mugabe left. The people are angry. Leadership is needed," warned Trevor Ncube, a prominent publisher who sits on the President's Advisory Council set up last year. 'Hashtags do come and go'The military, who led the coup that ousted Mugabe in November 2017, seem likely to play an ever more prominent role in government - as indicated by Tuesday's appointment of a former army chief to the post of health minister. "Mnangagwa cannot be safe. It would be insane for him to think he's safe. There's no doubt he has lost the confidence and support of the military," said Jonathan Moyo, an exiled former minister in Mugabe's government. "This is now a clueless, corrupt, incompetent government. The economic meltdown is deepening. There's no coherent approach. People are on their own," he said. "Mugabe had his own problems, but people never felt there was no government. With Mugabe gone, we now see in action the real forces behind his [Mr Mnangagwa's] reign - the machinery of violence, the military," said Mr Moyo, arguing Mugabe was a "restraining" force, and that the current government had quickly squandered all international goodwill. In the midst of all this, the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter could yet prove to be a powerful rallying point, a force for change, harnessing popular frustrations. Or it could be a minor distraction - a spasm of popular anger that is quickly supressed by a brutally authoritarian government seemingly preoccupied by looting public resources during the pandemic, and by its own vicious internal feuds. "Hashtags do come and go. The clampdown still exists. But now it's up to us to find ways forward… to sustain this momentum," said Dangarembga. "This is a launching pad, a platform from which to begin." Samsung announces the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra with massive specs - The Next Web Posted: 05 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT After months of rumors and leaks, Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra are finally official. Samsung made the announcement at its first virtual Unpacked event, alongside a slew of other Galaxy devices. Pre-orders for the device begin tomorrow. As usual, both Note devices come with massive screens and feature a sleek design, this time with a neat matte finish that's a nice change of pace from the usual gloss. They also have massive camera bumps to show off their imaging prowess. Given the wealth of leaks, the specs aren't a huge surprise, but Samsung is taking a bit of a different approach this year. While the Note series has long been about overpowered specs, this time Samsung is taking a bit of a different approach by offering the Note 20 in a 'standard' and 'Ultra' variants — and the differences go beyond screen size. The standard Note 20 is largely an S20 with an S-Pen, albeit with a few notable omissions:
One important detail missing here is a high refresh rate display; the standard Note 20 is stuck to a plain old 60 Hz, which is disappointing for a $999 flagship phone in 2020 — even the base S20 had a 120Hz screen. The phone also doesn't have expandable storage like the S20 either. On the other hand, the Note 20 has a slightly faster processor, mmWave 5G, and, of course, an S-Pen, so maybe Samsung thought it was a fair trade-off. The Note 20 Ultra is more along the lines of what we've come to expect from the Note family, with some market-leading specs to match its massive $1,299 price tag:
Basic specs aside, Samsung said it's made some major improvements to the S-Pen, reducing percieved latency down to 9ms through a combination of the faster refresh rate(on the Ultra) and using AI to predict where your hand will move. Samsung also says it can now automatically save your scribbles to Microsoft's OneNote, allowing you to easily access your notes on your PC. Other updates included expanded S-Pen gestures, PDF annotation in the Samsung Notes app, and the ability to record audio while writing notes. Samsung is leaning into its partnership with Microsoft by offering three-month access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, including upcoming support for the xCloud beta. You'll also be able to run your phone apps and access certain functions right from your PC via Microsoft's Your Phone app, with the ability to run multiple apps at once coming 'later this year.' The Note 20 will set you back $999 in the US and is available in Mystic Bronze, Mystic Gray, and Mystic Green, while the Note 20 Ultra starts at $1,299 and comes in Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black, and Mystic White. Pre-orders for the devices begin tomorrow, August 6, with the devices becoming widely available on August 21. Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:48 PM PDT Rebel Wilson's weight loss secrets revealed: The five things the actress, 40, is doing to get fit in her 'year of health' - and the VERY unusual thing she does every time she eats
Actress Rebel Wilson has offered a glimpse at some of the things she has been doing to get fit and lose weight, after she dubbed 2020 her 'year of health' at the beginning of January. The 40-year-old star relies on a combination of boxing, hiking, battle ropes and stair climbing to shed the unwanted kilos, as well as an approach to her diet called the 'Mayr Method' - in which she has to chew every mouthful of food 40 times. Dietitian Kate Save told Daily Mail Australia that she estimates Rebel has lost around 18kg already, or 2.8 stone. So what are the actress's secrets? Actress Rebel Wilson has offered a glimpse at some of the things she has been doing to get fit and lose weight, after she dubbed 2020 her 'year of health' (pictured with her personal trainer) The 40-year-old star from Sydney relies on a combination of boxing, hiking, battle ropes and stair climbing to shed the unwanted kilos (pictured in May 2019) The first thing Rebel (pictured) has adopted is lifting heavy weights, which is said to torch fat and quickly hone and tone your physique. The actress can often be seen flipping tyres and pulling heavy items on her Instagram page, under the watchful gaze of her celebrity personal trainer, Jono Castano. According to Jono, Rebel works out seven days per week with some sort of weight training involved every day to build up upper and lower body strength. 'Friday vibes but Rebel Wilson has been putting in the hard yards seven days per week,' Jono captioned a recent snap online. According to Rebel's trainer Jono, the 40-year-old works out seven days per week on a rotating cycle of different activities including boxing (pictured) and weight training 2. She mixes the weight training with high intensity High intensity exercise or HIIT has long had a reputation for being one of the best ways to ditch unwanted kilos. And Rebel's weekly workouts also include stair sprints and bouts with battle ropes. The 40-year-old conducts boxing sessions at Jono's gym, as boxing is one of the best workouts for creating lean, toned muscles. By mixing things up, she is able to get more of the benefits of everything. Rebel has become a fan of hiking this year, sharing snaps from Barrenjoey Lighthouse in Sydney's Palm Beach after doing the Lighthouse Walk (pictured on the hike) 3. She hikes Rebel has become a fan of hiking this year, sharing snaps from Barrenjoey Lighthouse in Sydney's Palm Beach after doing the Lighthouse Walk. The lighthouse walk is 2.2km, but takes around 90 minutes to climb, thanks to steep sections in some areas. The actress favours workout gear by the UK brand, Gymshark. Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Rebel's trainer Jono said the best things to do if you want to transform your body is 'focus on your nutrition, train around five days a week, ensure you're recovering well by stretching and sleeping, and make sure you're taking enough supplementation and multivitamins'. 'Treat your body like a temple!' Jono said. When it comes to diet, Rebel (pictured) has said she is a devout follower of something called the 'Mayr method', which she found out about after a trip to Austria The 'Mayr method' is an approach that eliminates food intolerances, reduces sugar, encourages eating whole foods slowly, boosts the immune system and reduces inflammation (Rebel pictured this year) 4. She follows the 'Mayr method' When it comes to diet, Rebel has said she is a devout follower of something called the 'Mayr method'. Rebel apparently started using the popular approach when she visited the luxury medical detox and wellness centre, VivaMayr, in Austria. The 'Mayr method' is an approach that eliminates food intolerances, reduces sugar, encourages eating whole foods slowly, boosts the immune system and reduces inflammation. The method eliminates snacking, reduces gluten and dairy intake, and encourages followers to follow mindful eating techniques like chewing food slowly and eating without distractions. The program recommends chewing each bite up to 40 times. A typical day on Rebel's plate includes plenty of lean protein and green, leafy vegetables. 5. She is taking her time While Rebel is working out and eating well every single day, she knows that getting fit and losing weight is not a quick fix. Jono said that a year is a good period of time for changing your body, as two months isn't enough. 'Don't forget, two months, you're putting a lot of stress on yourself,' he told Yahoo. 'So, my advice is keep your goals realistic, short and then achieve them and progress from there.' While Rebel (pictured) is working out and eating well every single day, she knows that getting fit and losing weight is not a quick fix - she is calling this year her 'year of health' Jono (pictured) previously told FEMAIL that people should be working out for at least 45 minutes each day in order to shed the kilos In March, Jono told Daily Mail Australia his top tips to help people lose weight. The Sydney gym buff said that people should be working out for at least 45 minutes a day to shed the kilos. While calorie intake is important, dieters don't have to sacrifice cheat days. 'At a minimum, I preach to always get in 45 minutes daily. Whether that be a workout, a walk or something else that's physical that you enjoy doing,' Jono told FEMAIL. Jono, 28, believes that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is the best form of exercise for weight loss. 'What I do for most of my clients looking to shed some pounds is incorporating a mix of different exercises into their session. Short bursts of intense cardio combined with resistance training and weights is my special formula,' he said. 'It fires up the heart rate and calorie burn as well as builds lean muscle so your body continues to burn calories at a high rate throughout the day.' Diet is just as important as exercise, and Jono recommends eating at a 'calorie deficit' if you want to lose weight. 'Think about it, if you train one hour a day, it's very important what you do in the other 23 hours,' he said. 'If you're looking to shed some pounds, it's important to eat at a calorie deficit meaning your total daily calorie expenditure needs to be higher than your calorie intake through what you eat.' A Russian ship's cargo of dangerous ammonium nitrate was stranded in Beirut port for years - CNN Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:08 PM PDT Documents newly reviewed by CNN reveal that a shipment of 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate arrived in Beirut on a Russian-owned vessel in 2013. The ship, named the MV Rhosus, was destined for Mozambique -- but stopped in Beirut due to financial difficulties that also created unrest with the ship's Russian and Ukrainian crew. Once it arrived, the ship never left Beirut's port, according Lebanon's Director of Customs, Badri Daher, despite repeated warnings by him and others that the cargo was the equivalent of "a floating bomb." "Due to the extreme danger posed by this stored items in unsuitable climate conditions, we reiterate our request to the Port Authorities to re-export the goods immediately to maintain the safety of the port and those working in it," Daher's predecessor, Chafic Merhi, wrote in a 2016 letter addressed to a judge involved in the case. Lebanese authorities have not named the MV Rhosus as the source of the substance that ultimately exploded in Beirut on Tuesday, but Prime Minister Hassan Diab said the devastating blast was caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate. He added that the substance had been stored for six years at the port warehouse without safety measures, "endangering the safety of citizens." Lebanon's general security chief also said a "highly explosive material" had been confiscated years earlier and stored in the warehouse, which is just a few minutes' walk from Beirut's shopping and nightlife districts. Tuesday's massive explosion, which rocked the capital, left at least 135 dead and 5,000 injured. 'Floating bomb'In 2013, the MV Rhosus set off from Batumi, Georgia, destined for Mozambique, according to the vessel's path and the account of its captain Boris Prokoshev. It was carrying 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate, an industrial chemical commonly used around the world as a fertilizer -- and in explosives for mining. The Moldovan-flagged ship stopped in Greece to refuel. That's when the ship's owner told the Russian and Ukrainian sailors that he had run out of money and they would have to pick up additional cargo to cover the travel costs -- which led them on a detour to Beirut. The vessel was owned by a company called Teto Shipping which members of the crew said was owned by Igor Grechushkin, a Khabarovsk businessman who resided in Cyprus. Once in Beirut, the MV Rhosus was detained by local port authorities due to "gross violations in operating a vessel," unpaid fees to the port, and complaints filed by the Russian and Ukrainian crew , according to the Seafarers' Union of Russia (affiliated with the International Transport Workers' Federation, or ITF), which represented the Russian sailors, told CNN. It never resumed its journey. The sailors had been on the ship for 11 months with few supplies, according to Prokoshev. "I wrote to Putin everyday... Eventually we had to sell the fuel and use the money to hire a lawyer because there was not help, the owner did not even provide us with food or water," Prokoshev said in a radio interview with Echo Moscow on Wednesday. They would eventually abandon the ship. "According to our information, the Russian crew was later repatriated to their homeland... the salaries were not paid," the union told CNN. "At the time, on board of the dry cargo ship there were particularly dangerous goods -- ammonium nitrate, which the port authorities of Beirut did not allow to unload or transfer to another ship," it added. In 2014, Mikhail Voytenko, who runs an online publication tracking maritime activity, described the ship as a "floating bomb." CNN made several unsuccessful attempts to reach Grechushkin on a Cyprus telephone number. Unheard warningsAccording to emails exchanged by Prokoshev and a Beirut-based lawyer Charbel Dagher, who represented the crew in Lebanon, the ammonium nitrate was unloaded in Beirut's port by November 2014 and stored in a hangar. It was then kept in that hangar for six years, despite repeated warnings from the Director of Lebanese Customs, Badri Daher, of the "extreme danger" that the cargo posed. But public court documents CNN obtained through the prominent Lebanese human rights activist, Wadih Al-Asmar, reveal that Daher and his predecessor, Merhi, turned to Beirut's courts to help dispose of the dangerous goods multiple times from 2014 onwards. "In our memos 19320/2014 dated 5/12/2014 and 5/6/2015 [...] we requested that your honor order the responsible Port Authorities to re-export Ammonium Nitrate that was taken off the Rhosus ship and placed in Customs hangar number 12 in Beirut port," Daher wrote in 2017. At points, he even offered to sell the dangerous cargo to the Lebanese army, according to the court documents, but to no avail. Daher confirmed to CNN earlier on Wednesday that his office sent "a total of six letters to the legal authorities" but that the authorities never responded to any of their letters. "The Port Authority should not have allowed the ship to offload the chemicals into the port," he said. "The chemicals were originally going to Mozambique, not Lebanon." On Wednesday, the Director General of Beirut Port Hassan Kraytem told local television channel OTV: "We stored the material in warehouse number 12 at Beirut port in accordance with a court order. We knew that they were dangerous materials, but not to that extent." Kraytem too said that the issue of removing the explosive material had been brought up by State Security and Customs -- but that the issue had not been "resolved." "Customs and State Security sent letters [to the authorities] asking to remove or re-export the explosive materials six years ago, and we have been waiting since then for this issue to be resolved, but to no avail," Kraytem said. Maintenance was conducted on the warehouse door just hours before the blast on Tuesday, he added. "We were asked to fix a door of the warehouse by State Security and we did that at noon, but what occurred in the afternoon I have no idea," he said. Ammonium nitrateAmmonium nitrate has been implicated in deadly industrial explosions in the past, and is known to require careful handling. "Poorly stored ammonium nitrate is notorious for explosions -- for example in Oppau, Germany; in Galveston Bay, Texas; and more recently at West in Waco, Texas; and Tianjin in China," Andrea Sella, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at University College London, told the Science Media Centre. "This is a catastrophic regulatory failure because regulations on the storage of ammonium nitrate are typically very clear. The idea that such a quantity would have been left unattended for six years beggars belief and was an accident waiting to happen." Perhaps the closest comparison to Beirut's explosion, in terms of scale, is a blast in Texas City in 1947, which was caused by 2,300 US tons (about 2,087 metric tons) of ammonium nitrate. The resulting fire caused an explosion and additional fires that damaged more than 1,000 buildings and killed nearly 400 people, according to the website of the Texas Historical Association. Previous disasters linked to the chemical have led to improved regulations for its safe storage, Associate Professor Stewart Walker, from the school of Forensic, Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, told CNN said; such rules mean it tends to be kept away from population centers. "Both of these things will be questioned in the investigation into the Beirut explosion, because they had such a large amount of ammonium nitrate, which may not have been stored appropriately, and in an area where there is a large number of people," he added. Offers of assistance pour in for Lebanon after deadly Beirut explosions - FRANCE 24 English Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:08 PM PDT Issued on: Modified: Countries around the world have been paying tribute to victims of two deadly blasts in Beirut on Tuesday and sending offers of assistance to Lebanon, a country already reeling from the effects of overlapping crises before disaster struck its capital. Advertising "France stands and will always stand by the side of Lebanon and the Lebanese. It is ready to provide assistance according to the needs expressed by the Lebanese authorities," French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a tweet after the incident in Beirut which left scores dead and wounded thousands more. French President Emmanuel Macron said French aid and resources were being sent to Lebanon.
In Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his country stood ready to provide any support it could to help. "The pictures and videos from Beirut tonight are shocking," Johnson wrote on Twitter. "All of my thoughts and prayers are with those caught up in this terrible incident. "The UK is ready to provide support in any way we can, including to those British nationals affected." In the United States, the State Department was closely following reports of an explosion in Beirut and stands ready to offer 'all possible assistance', a spokesperson for the agency said The State Department has no information about the cause of the explosion, the spokesperson said and added that the agency is working closely with local authorities to determine if any US citizens were affected in the incident.
Israel offered humanitarian aid to Lebanon, with which it is still technically at war, after Tuesday's explosions. "Following the explosion in Beirut, Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, on behalf of the State of Israel, have offered the Lebanese government -- via international intermediaries -- medical and humanitarian aid, as well as immediate emergency assistance," said a joint statement from the two ministries. Meanwhile, Iran's top diplomat expressed Tehran's support for the "resilient" people of Lebanon after the blasts. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the great and resilient people of Lebanon," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted. "As always, Iran is fully prepared to render assistance in any way necessary," he said. "Stay strong, Lebanon."
Countries in the Gulf paid tribute to victims as well, with Qatar saying it would send field hospitals to support Lebanon's medical response. Qatar's ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani called President Michel Aoun to offer condolences, according to the state-run Qatar News Agency. Sheikh Tamim wished "a speedy recovery for the injured", QNA reported, adding that he "expressed Qatar's solidarity with brotherly Lebanon and its willingness to provide all kinds of assistance". Field hospitals would be dispatched, the report added. Elsewhere in the Gulf, the United Arab Emirates' Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash tweeted that "our hearts are with Beirut and its people". He posted the tribute alongside an image of Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, illuminated in the colours of the Lebanese flag. "Our prayers during these difficult hours are that God... protects brotherly Lebanon and the Lebanese to reduce their affliction and heal their wounds," he wrote. Gulf countries including Qatar and the UAE maintain close ties with Beirut and have long provided financial aid and diplomatic assistance to mediate Lebanon's political and sectarian divisions. Bahrain's foreign ministry urged its nationals in Lebanon to contact the ministry's operations centre or Manama's representative in Beirut, while Kuwait ordered its citizens to take extreme caution and stay indoors. It also asked those in need of assistance to contact their embassy. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees extended his best wishes after the tragedy in Beirut.
"With my many Lebanese friends and colleagues tonight, and with all the people of Lebanon — in solidarity, wishing them renewed strength and much courage," UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi tweeted Tuesday.

2020-08-05 11:22:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiPmh0dHBzOi8vd3d3My5uaGsub3IuanAvbmV3cy9odG1sLzIwMjAwODA1L2sxMDAxMjU1Mjg2MTAwMC5odG1s0gFCaHR0cHM6Ly93d3czLm5oay5vci5qcC9uZXdzL2h0bWwvMjAyMDA4MDUvYW1wL2sxMDAxMjU1Mjg2MTAwMC5odG1s?oc=5
As Hiroshima bombing turns 75, a look at 6 changes to nuclear arms under Trump - USA TODAY Posted: 05 Aug 2020 04:08 AM PDT Seventy-five years ago Thursday, the U.S. became – and remains – the only country in the world to detonate a nuclear weapon against an enemy. At 8:15 a.m. local time on Aug. 6, 1945, an American Boeing B-29 aircraft named Enola Gay dropped a 9,700-pound uranium bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" over Hiroshima, Japan. About 70,000 people were killed instantly by the explosion, which had a radius of around a mile. Three days later, on Aug. 9 at 11:02 a.m. local time, a second atomic bomb, named "Fat Man," was unleashed by the U.S. over Nagasaki, Japan. This time, 40,000 people died straight away – within five years, the number of deaths approached 140,000, according to archived estimates by the U.S. Department of Energy. The Hiroshima death toll reached an estimated 200,000 by 1950 as those who survived the blast succumbed to fatal burns, radiation sickness and various cancers. On Aug. 14, 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally, effectively bringing an end to World War II. Three-quarters of a century later, tensions, complications and uncertainties over nuclear weapons and how to ensure they are not used again are still very much with us. Among the recent developments:
Fred Carriere, who teaches international relations at Syracuse University, said that one of the major impediments to getting countries to denuclearize, whether the U.S., North Korea or Iran, is that "everybody always wants everything up front, with the promise that good things will follow later on, but few will ever be able to accept this strategy." In the case of North Korea, for example, negotiations broke down over Pyongyang's insistence that Washington immediately halt economic sanctions. "North Korea is not going to give up its nuclear weapons unless it can be absolutely confident that it has turned over a new leaf with the U.S," said Carriere. 'Faded away into a dark nightmare': North Korea says Trump's diplomacy has failed 'My God, what have we done?'Meanwhile, the stories of atomic bomb survivors, a dwindling number, have shaped the way we think about the consequences of using nuclear weapons. When Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist and one of the designers of the atomic bomb, was asked in an NBC television interview in 1965 to reflect on the legacy of what's known as the Trinity test – the code name for the first detonation of a nuclear device on July 16, 1945 – Oppenheimer responded to the question by saying that as he watched the huge blast wave ripple out over a remote desert area of New Mexico, a line from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita ran through his head: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." Koko Tanimoto Kondo, 75, is one person whose world was destroyed on Aug. 6, 1945. Kondo was 8 months old and with her mother when the house in Hiroshima they were in, a parsonage of the church where her father was a minister, caved in and buried them under mounds of twisted metal and rubble as Japan's most industrialized city was consumed by the searing heat of the world's first nuclear attack. Opinion: We monitor everyone in charge of nuclear weapons except presidents They escaped after her mother, who flitted in and out of consciousness, saw a tiny crack of light through the wreckage and, working the hole bigger bit by bit, was eventually able to make an opening large enough to push her baby out and then crawl out herself. In a recent Zoom call, Kondo described how a medical student told her parents that he did not think that their baby, racked with fever and injuries, would survive. "But here I am today, 75 years later," she said. For years, Kondo underwent annual examinations so doctors and scientists could study the impact of radiation on the human body, a process she described as "humiliating." In 1946, Kondo's father, Kiyoshi Tanimoto, made an appearance in "Hiroshima," a book about survivors by American journalist John Hersey. In Hersey's account, Tanimoto is described in the wake of the blast as frantically running around trying to help the wounded and dying and encountering "rank on rank of the burned and bleeding." Tanimoto later started a program called Hiroshima Maidens that enabled Japanese girls physically altered by the bombing to travel to the U.S. to have corrective plastic surgery. In the Zoom call, Kondo, who has devoted her life to campaigning for peace with various organizations and civil society groups, said that one of her earliest memories of Hiroshima was being comforted by a group of teenage girls – Hiroshima Maidens. "I could not see their faces. Their lips were seared to their chins. Their eyes would not close because of the burns. One girl, I recall, was trying to comb my hair but when I turned to look at her hand I saw that all her fingers had been melted away," she said. Kondo said she vowed that day to find the person who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. "I wanted to kick or bite or punch this person," she said. Some years later, in 1955, Kondo would get her chance when, on a trip to the U.S. with her family, she appeared on an NBC show called "This Is Your Life." Also appearing on the show that day was Capt. Robert Lewis, co-pilot of the Enola Gay, the American Boeing B-29 that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. Kondo changed her mind about revenge as she watched the show's host ask Lewis how he felt after dropping the bomb. With tears welling up in his eyes, the pilot said that he had written in his flight log on Aug. 6, 1945: "My God, what have we done?" On the Zoom call, her voice cracking and tears welling up in her own eyes, Kondo said her encounter with Lewis made her realize she "shouldn't hate this person. If I should hate anything, I should hate the war itself." In a follow-up email, Kondo said: "I constantly remind young people that they need to learn from history, that what happened in Hiroshima must never happen again."
