Indian soaps and serials seem to be a neverending source of internet memes and general entertainment, all thanks to those melodramatic dialogues. And to add some more drama to it, a young music producer has added few peppy harmonium beats to some dialogues on autotune, turning the dialogues into the lyrics of a viral rap song.

Yashraj Mukhate, a singer-producer from Auranagabad recently converted a small scene from Star Plus' former show 'Saath Nibhana Saathiya' and converted it into a hilarious music video.

The clip features the show's famous character Kokilaben, scolding her daughters-in-law Rashi and Gopi Bahu due to some kitchen mishap, which turned out somewhat like this.

In the clip, Kokila is yelling at the two because juice spilled on her saree, forcing her to go for a shower. Meanwhile. Gopi put some 'chanaa' inside the pressure cooker, left it on the gas and went to Kokila. In Gopi's absence, someone in the kitchen emptied the grams and left the empty cooker on the gas. She further screams at Gopi to reveal the truth and a scared Gopi names Rashi as the culprit.

Putting an autotune twist to the scene, Yashraj said, "First World Problems - Made Kokila Ben sing this time."

The video with the catchy emphasis on 'Kaun tha' (who was it?) went viral, sparking a laugh riot on social media and reminding everyone of the hilarious show.

"I loved the way she spoke. It already had a rhythm to it. I added some beats and some of my favourite chords to it and uploaded it yesterday," said the young artists speaking to India Express.

This is not the first Desi serial that went viral on social media this week. Earlier today, a scene from a Bangla serial Krishnakoli went viral after it depicted doctors operating on a patient using a kitchen scrubber.

PNG demands China explain COVID-19 vaccine trial on miners - Lowell Sun

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT

By ROD McGUIRK

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Papua New Guinea blocked the arrival of a flight carrying workers from China after a Chinese mine operator said its employees were given a coronavirus vaccine in a possible unauthorized trial, authorities said Friday.

The Pacific nation's pandemic response controller, David Manning, banned COVID-19 vaccine trials after Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Ltd. said it vaccinated Chinese employees.

Pharmaceutical companies in China and other countries are racing to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus. A Chinese drug company is testing a vaccine on volunteers in Indonesia. But none has been approved for general use.

Manning said he ordered a flight carrying 180 Chinese workers turned back Thursday as a precaution. He said he acted "in the best interests of our people" because of "possible risks or threat that it might cause."

Manning said he wanted more information from the Chinese government.

In Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesman said he had no information about Papua New Guinea but defended China's drug development.

Chinese vaccine research "carries out evaluation of safety and effectiveness and ethical review strictly," spokesman Zhao Lijian said. He said "emergency use" also might be allowed to "maximize the health of the people."

Papua New Guinea, a poor country of 9 million people in Melanesia, north of Australia, has reported 361 coronavirus cases and four deaths. Infections have surged in the past month. A curfew is being enforced in the capital, Port Moresby, in an attempt to stop the spread.

The vaccine was administered to the 48 Chinese in China three days before they landed in Port Moresby on Aug. 13, according to Health Minister Jelta Wong.

"Details of the vaccine used … are still not known," Wong said in an email to The Associated Press.

Manning said the National Department of Health had not approved any trials. He said any vaccines required approval by the World Health Organization and had to undergo "vigorous vaccine trials, protocols and procedures."

Wong said no applications for such a trial had been received by his government.

A document on the mine company's letterhead titled "Vaccination Statement" said 48 Chinese employees "have been vaccinated with SARS-COV-2 vaccine" on Aug. 10.

The statement was sent to the Papua New Guinea Health Department and advised that the vaccine could cause false-positive test results in those who received it.

Manning has written to Chinese Ambassador Xue Bing seeking "immediate clarification of the Chinese government's position regarding the vaccination statement."

Ramu is operated by Metallurgical Corp. of China, a subsidiary of state-owned China Metallurgical Group Corp.

Phone calls to Ramu's office in the Papua New Guinea city of Madang and to MCC's Beijing headquarters weren't answered.

Australia, which is Papua New Guinea's largest foreign aid donor, learned China may be testing a coronavirus vaccine in the region using employees of state-owned enterprises, The Australian newspaper reported.

Australian government officials did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.

It was unclear which Chinese producer supplied the vaccine.

State-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., also known as SinoPharm, announced in July it gave experimental shots of a vaccine to its employees before the government approved testing in people.

In Indonesia, another Chinese company, Sinovac Biotech Ltd., began testing a vaccine this month on 1,620 volunteers in partnership with state-owned Bio Farma.

7-goal surges push Avalanche and Stars into 2nd-round series - WTOP

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:42 PM PDT

The Dallas Stars certainly can't take too much comfort in those four victories over Colorado in the regular season or their unprecedented seven-goal surge to advance in these unusual playoffs.

Life has certainly been different in the bubble in Edmonton, Alberta, where the Avalanche and Stars open the second round with Game 1 of their best-of-seven series Saturday night.

Colorado, after a 4-0 shutout of the Stars during round-robin play, had consecutive 7-1 wins over Arizona to wrap up that first-round series in five games.

Dallas gave up three goals before taking a shot but rallied to become the first team in NHL history to overcome a three-goal deficit and win a playoff game by four goals — 7-3 win over Calgary in Game 6 on Thursday night.

"People don't realize how hard it is, this bubble," Stars interim head coach Rick Bowness said. "It's great that we're playing, and the league is back, but it's tough."

The Stars had a couple of wild, 5-4 wins against Calgary. They won Game 2 on goal with 40 seconds left, and in overtime in Game 4 after Joe Pavelski's tying goal with 11.9 seconds left in regulation notched the first hat trick in Dallas postseason history — a feat matched by rookie Denis Gurianov in the Game 6 clincher.

"They're a veteran team. Some really good defensemen who log a lot of minutes and do a lot of heavy lifting for them, and some guys up front that can put the puck in the net," Avs defenseman Erik Johnson said. "So it's going to be, I think, probably a heavier series, probably some more physicality, than what we had in the last one."

TOP SCORERS

Colorado center Nathan MacKinnon's 13 points (four goals, nine assists) were the most in the NHL this postseason going into Friday night's games. Nazem Kadri has 11 points (six goals, five assists) after consecutive two-goal games, while Hart Trophy finalist MacKinnon has points in every game this postseason. Miro Heiskanen, the 21-year-old defenseman for the Stars, has 12 points (three goals, nine assists). His power play goal in the first period of Game 6 finally got Dallas on the board and on the road to its comeback.

POWER RESTORED

The Avalanche went 1 for 18 on the power play in the four regular season games against Dallas, which won the last one in overtime and also had a shootout victory. In its round-robin win Aug. 5, three of Colorado's four goals came with a man advantage.

BETWEEN THE POSTS

After starting all 13 postseason games for the Stars last season, goalie Ben Bishop played only Game 2 against Calgary after appearing in only one of the three round-robin games. Anton Khudobin has a 2.49 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage this postseason after never starting a playoff game before this year. He stopped the last 34 shots he faced against the Flames after surrendering three goals in seven shots to open Game 6.

"Regroup and just keep going. Luckily, it went that way," Khudobin said. "After the first (playoff series) win … trust me, it feels good. It's under my belt. But at the same time, I know what's ahead of us."

Philipp Grubauer was in net for all four Colorado victories over Arizona, stopping 81 of 85 shots (.953 save percentage). Pavel Francouz, who had 27 saves in the round-robin shutout against Dallas, stopped 19 of 21 shots in Game 3 when Arizona also had two empty-netters in a 4-2 win.

COMEBACK JOE

Pavelski, who signed a three-year deal as a free agent last summer after 12 playoff appearances the past 13 seasons with San Jose, was part of another big comeback clincher in his first playoff series with the Stars. The Sharks trailed 3-0 midway through the third period in Game 7 of the opening round in last year's playoffs when Pavelski, their captain, went down on the ice bleeding after being cross-checked by Vegas center Cody Eakin. The Sharks scored four goals during the five-minute power play on the major penalty, then won 5-4 in overtime.

"If we're talking about comebacks, I mean, obviously, last year in the Game 7 against Vegas, that's got to be up there," Pavelski said clincher over Calgary. "You play enough playoff games, you see a few things, and this one is right there with it."

LONG TIME AGO

That Stars are in the second round in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1998-2001, a stretch when they twice beat Colorado in the Western Conference finals that went the full seven games to reach the Stanley Cup Final. Dallas won the Cup over Buffalo in 1999 and lost to New Jersey the following year. In their other postseason meetings, Colorado beat the Stars in five games in the first round in 2004 and 2006.

COVID-19: Live performances to resume in Singapore with small-scale pilot events - CNA

COVID-19: Live performances to resume in Singapore with small-scale pilot events - CNA

SINGAPORE: After several months of hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, Singapore will pilot small-scale live performances that will serve as trials for progressive resumption on a broader scale, said the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) on Friday (Aug 21).

With safe management measures in place, "they will help identify new models and best practices for these live performances to be conducted safely, and in a sustainable manner, going forward", said MCCY in a media release.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong said there will be "a couple of initiatives that we have lined up in the coming weeks", as authorities revisit existing efforts to help the arts and cultural sector.

He added: "Live performances add a buzz to our society and community. I think we all yearn to be part of a live performance. We're going to try and pilot a few live performances at a few venues to see how that works out and if it's safe enough we'll scale up.

"Of course, safety is of paramount consideration and we want to ensure that measures are in place, and that the venues are suitable. And then we can scale up thereafter."

MCCY and the National Arts Council (NAC) will work closely with key stakeholders to explore commissioning or programming "a range of performances for all communities that reflects Singapore's multi-cultural character", said the ministry.

These will complement existing efforts under the arts and culture resilience package to protect the livelihoods of industry practitioners and help them emerge stronger after COVID-19, said MCCY.

Since its introduction on Apr 7, the S$55 million package has provided more than 6,000 work and training opportunities and supported more than 900 digitalisation projects and programmes, according to the ministry.

It also announced a new operating grant, which will be drawn from the package.

"Even as we initiate pilots towards safe reopening, it may be some time before arts and culture activities can resume more fully," said MCCY.

The operating grant will thus "preserve core capabilities in our arts and culture ecosystem during this period", including in closely related sectors such as media and design, it added.

Mr Tong, who is also Second Minister for Law, said the authorities are also looking at further help for arts freelancers who "contribute richly to our ecosystem", in particular in getting operating spaces that they can use for free.

"We also look at the Arts Resource Hub, on how we can aggregate job and training opportunities so that there's a one-stop shop for freelancers, and also to navigate the system so that they can do better in terms of seeking help," he added.

Established in November 2019, the Arts Resource Hub currently has close to 5,000 subscribers, with more than 800 freelancers having benefitted from its programmes, according to MCCY.

The ministry said freelancers will have free access to co-working spaces at Goodman Arts Centre and Stamford Arts Centre - to be reopened "over the coming weeks" - while the NAC will continue to explore commissioning more projects, training courses and digital performances.

More details on the operating grant as well as further help for freelancers will be announced, said Mr Tong.

BlueAndGold - Four-Star Defensive Lineman Kaleb Artis Updates Notre Dame Recruitment - Irish Illustrated

Queens (N.Y.) St. Francis Prep class of 2022 defensive lineman Kaleb Artis added Notre Dame to his offer sheet May 18, and in the past three months he has kept in consistent communication with the Fighting Irish coaching staff.

He has enjoyed getting to know Irish defensive line coaches Mike Elston and Mike O'Guin.

"It's always enthusiastic and great vibes whenever I get to speak with Coach Elston and Coach O'Guin," Artis said. "We talk about football and how we're doing personally.

"I like their energy and the attention they're giving me. I can definitely say that."

Notre Dame is not looking to take any additional defensive lineman in the 2021 class as the Irish are full on scholarships. Elston has moved his attention to the 2022 class, and Artis, who Rivals ranks as the No. 18 defensive tackle and No. 2 player in New York, seems to be a priority for the Fighting Irish.

"He's always excited when I'm on a phone call with him," Artis said of Elston. "He wants to make sure me and the family are doing well. I'll tell him about my workout program, and he loves it. I love what he's saying."

O'Guin was hired as a defensive line assistant and is working closely with Elston on the recruiting front.

"He's a great guy," Artis said of O'Guin. "We're trying to build our connection up. I tell him about me, and it's always a good conversation with him as well."

In the past few months, Artis has been doing his research on Notre Dame to learn as much as he can without being able to take a visit.

"I've seen some cool things online — the player's lounge and locker room," he said. "Also, I know how great of a school is academically, which is really important."

Russia vaccine roll-out plan prompts coronavirus mutation worries - Ottawa Sun

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Article content continued

But the results of those trials have not been made public, and many Western scientists are skeptical, warning against its use until all internationally approved testing and regulatory hurdles have been passed.

Russia said on Thursday it plans to begin a large-scale efficacy trial of the vaccine in a total of 40,000 people, but will also begin administering it to people in high-risk groups, such as healthcare workers, before the trial has produced any results.

"You want to make sure the vaccine is effective. We really don't know that (about the Sputnik vaccine)," said Kathryn Edwards, a professor of pediatrics and vaccine expert in the infectious diseases division at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in the United States.

She said that the risk of what a vaccine might do to a virus – in terms of fighting it, blocking it, or forcing it to adapt – is "always a concern."

Dan Barouch, a specialist at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, noted that mutation rates for coronaviruses are far lower than for viruses like HIV, but added: "There are many potential downsides of using a vaccine that doesn't work. The risk that it (the virus) would mutate is a theoretical risk."

Scientists say similar evolutionary pressure to mutate is seen with bacterial pathogens, which – when faced with antibiotics designed to target them – can evolve and adapt to evade the drugs and develop resistance.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

Antibiotic resistance and the rise of superbugs, is described by the World Health Organization as one of the biggest threats to global health, food security and development today.

Southwest Louisiana mobile testing site closed Monday to Wednesday ahead of anticipated tropical weather - Louisiana Department of Health - Louisiana.gov

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Next week, COVID-19 mobile testing for Region 5 will only be available Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28 from 8 a.m. to noon. The test site will be closed August 24 through August 26 due to anticipated tropical weather. Any additional scheduling changes will be announced should they occur.

The test site is moving next week to a new location in Lake Charles. The entrance to testing is located in the 700 block of Dora Street, between Kirkman Street and Center Street. From East Prien Lake Road, take Kirkman north, then turn left at Dora Street. Follow the signage for where to enter and exit the testing site.

Mobile testing uses trucks and equipment operated by the Louisiana National Guard to bring testing kits to neighborhood locations such as schools, community centers, fire stations and other local neighborhood locations.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

The Region 5 Office of Public Health continues to communicate with local officials to ensure ongoing community access to testing. Additional community testing facilities and partners are listed here.

Test site details

  • Testing is for open for any Louisiana resident 16 years of age and older with valid Louisiana identification.
  • Each testing site will be conducted as a drive-thru test site.
  • Once on site, those being tested will need to wear a mask and stay in their cars for verification of eligibility criteria, ID check and self-administered test. Walk-up testing is not preferred due to safety concerns, but walk-ups will not be turned away.
  • The site will use a self-administered nasal swab test that will allow those being tested to swab their own nose on site while in their vehicles, observed by a trained medical volunteer to ensure the sample is taken correctly, and drop the sealed sample into a container on their way out of the drive-thru site.
  • Once received, the Office of Public Health will contact those who were tested to communicate their results and share any necessary information.
  • While awaiting results, individuals who have been tested should follow CDC guidelines and take steps to help prevent the virus from spreading to people in their home and community.

Save the number 877-766-2130 in your phone

Anyone who receives a call from 877-766-2130 is urged to answer, as the call is from a contact tracer who will keep an individual's information private. Personal information is used to quickly identify anyone a COVID-positive individual may have been in close contact with to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. Everyone called by a contact tracer is advised to watch themselves for signs of illness for 14 days from when they first came in contact with the COVID-19 person.

If a resource need is identified through the contact tracing interview, the case is flagged for follow-up from a resource coordinator social worker who can connect individuals with resources including medication, masks, food assistance and even help locating alternative housing.

If someone calls from a number other than 877-766-2130, claims to be a contact tracer and asks for personal information, hang up immediately.

15 details you may have missed in BTS's 'Dynamite' music video - Insider - INSIDER

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:08 PM PDT

The most popular boy group in the world is back with a new music video, and it's full of fun moments and granular details that help build its retro feel.

BTS, the 7-member K-pop group, dropped a new music video for their new digital single "Dynamite" on Friday. Upon its release, "Dynamite" has already set the new record for the highest number of viewers for a YouTube video premiere, with at least 3 million viewers around the world tuned in when the music video dropped. It also swept iTunes charts and landed a spot on Spotify's "Today's Top Hits" playlist.

At the virtual press conference ahead of the music video premiere, BTS's leader RM introduced the new song as a "new challenge" for BTS. For the first time since the group's debut, its lyrics are entirely in English. It was also dropped in a timezone friendly to fans in the US

More importantly, "Dynamite" clearly signals a new territory for BTS's musical endeavors. Describing "Dynamite" as a "feel-good song," V told the press that the song "felt new and a different" from what the group's tried before.

"Everyone in the world is going through tough times," Jimin told reporters. "Dynamite is a song that can lift anyone's spirits."

Navas dedicates Europa League to fallen Sevilla stars Reyes and Puerta - Goal.com

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Jesus Navas says Sevilla's Europa League title win is in memory of the club's former stars Jose Antonio Reyes and Antonio Puerta as the La Liga side win the competition for the sixth time against Inter in a 3-2 victory.

The Spaniards fell a goal behind through an early Romelu Lukaku penalty, with Luuk de Jong's brace establishing a short-lived lead before Diego Godin's header saw the match enter the break at two goals apiece.

Centre-half Diego Carlos scored the winner for Sevilla in the 74th minute as the Liga side created the most opportunities despite conceding more possession to their Italian opposition.

Sevilla's celebrations post-match saw the players wear shirts honouring the passing of former players Reyes and Puerta.

Puerta - who died of cardiac arrest in 2007 - played in the club's first two UEFA Cup/Europa League triumphs in 2005-06 and 2006-07, while Reyes - who passed away in a car accident last year - was a member of the side that won the same competition three times between 2013-16.

"It is the most special day for being able to raise the cup as captain, with my Sevilla," Navas told Movistar.

"This is for all the people who are not with us anymore, for Puerta, Reyes ... my godfather who has passed away. We are all captains here."

Navas explained how proud he was of the team's achievement and said he believed the fans could be excited about the potential rise of the club in the future.

"This group deserve it, we have been fighting all the year," he said. "They worked day by day with the problems that there have been. And to all the fans who deserve it.

"The fans can feel proud with us, today and tomorrow they will enjoy. And Sevilla is getting greater every day."

Sevilla's road to glory in the Europa League included victories against Manchester United in the semi-finals, Wolves in the quarter-finals and Roma at the last 16 stage.

De Jong, who scored the winning goal against the Red Devils, felt his team showed great strength to win the tournament despite having such tough matches to overcome.

"It is incredible," De Jong told BT Sport. "We had such tough games all tournament but we played so well as a team.

"We were like a family, worked together. It didn't matter who came in. It was tough. We started well but they scored out of nothing. Two goals, an amazing feeling for me."

Man Utd to sign teenage star Hansen-Aaroen, Tromso confirm - Goal.com

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Norwegian side Tromso have confirmed Isak Hansen-Aaroen has left the club after agreeing to sign for Manchester United.

The forward, who turns 16 on Saturday, agreed his move to Old Trafford several months ago and it has now been confirmed in a farewell message from his club.

In a message posted on Instagram Tromso wrote: "A wonderful person. A unique football talent who just loves to play football now.

Article continues below

"He came from Floya to Tromso and joined the academy as a 10-year-old, studying at the Tromso school and made his debut in the first team as a 15-year-old. He had an assist in his last match for Tromso.

"Thank you so much for the last 10 years and good luck in Manchester United and on in your career. We hope you have a great time, see you soon."

Hansen-Aaroen became Tromso's youngest-ever player at the age of 15 years and 319 days last month and it is understood he is excited at the prospect of linking up with fellow Norwegian and Man Utd head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United have already announced their first batch of scholars for next season's under-18s squad which included the arrival of Logan Pye and Joe Hugill who were previously at Sunderland, and Radek Vitek from Sigma Oloumouc.

Hansen-Aaroen is expected to be included in the second announcement along with Barcelona wonderkid Marc Jurado and former Real Madrid left-back Alvaro Fernandes. It is understood the club have been waiting for international clearance for their new arrivals but that should be completed in the coming days.

Jurado and Fernandes would be required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival to the United Kingdom due coronavirus restrictions currently in place, which require anyone flying into the country from Spain to quarantine.

The U18s and U23s have been back in training for a number of weeks as they prepare for the new campaign. Neil Wood is currently operating with a mismatched squad as they aim to sort loan deals out for a number of the more senior players in the squad. James Garner, Di'Shon Bernard, Dylan Levitt and Matej Kovar are all amongst the players being considered for moves ahead of the new season.

MCCY to pilot small-scale live performances, give additional support to arts community - The Straits Times

MCCY to pilot small-scale live performances, give additional support to arts community - The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - Plans to resume live performances are under way, said the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) on Friday (Aug 21).

Though performing art shows and concerts ground to a halt for months during the Covid-19 crisis, MCCY and the National Arts Council (NAC) are now exploring commissioning and programming small-scale pilot performances as trial runs.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong said: "Live performances add a buzz to our society and community. I think we all yearn to be part of a live performance.

"We're going to try and pilot a few live performances at a few venues to see how that works out and if it's safe enough, we'll scale up.

"Of course, safety is of paramount consideration and we want to ensure that measures are in place, and that the venues are suitable."

MCCY added in a statement that it would "ensure a range of performances for all communities that reflects Singapore's multicultural character to cater to Singaporeans who have not been able to attend a show or concert over the last few months".

It said NAC would reveal more details about the pilots later.

Mr Tong, who is also Second Minister for Law, said he was looking at ways to further support the arts community.

"We've had the Arts and Culture Resilience Package and that has gone to supporting the digital space. We've gone to subsidise venue hires and also sought to give rental (waivers).

"But I think more can be done because it's sometimes easy to assume that arts and culture are not essential services. But they do need support and are a vital part of our society."

The $55 million package, which was announced in April to sustain the arts community during the Covid-19 crisis, has provided more than 6,000 work and training opportunities for arts and culture practitioners, MCCY said.

The package has also supported more than 900 digitalisation efforts by local artists and arts organisations, from Streets Of Hope, an NAC visual art project of works by 350 artists, to The Straits Times' 30 Days Of Art partnership with NAC.

New measures will include an additional grant to support operating costs for arts and culture organisations, as well as those in closely-related sectors such as media and design.

Co-working spaces at Goodman Arts Centre and Stamford Arts Centre will be reopened over the coming weeks, with safe management measures in place.

Arts freelancers can use these spaces for free and also attend programmes and webinars organised by the Arts Resource Hub, such as clinics conducted by experienced freelancers on how to access government support schemes.

The application window for the Capability Development Scheme for the Arts and the Digital Presentation Grant for the Arts has been extended to Sept 14 to support training or projects until March 31 next year.

After the Sept 14 deadline, freelancers can apply for NAC's regular project grants, some of which have been enhanced to offer higher funding for projects planned for 2021.

The Capability Development Scheme for the Arts, which covers course fees as well as absentee payroll or training allowance of $10 per hour, has supported nearly 600 training opportunities, half of which were for freelancers.

The Digital Presentation Grant for the Arts helps artists fund the digitalisation of their work. It has supported more than 300 projects and provided around 4,500 work opportunities, 1,100 of which were for freelancers.

Theatremaker Saiful Amri, 42, received $20,000 from the Digital Presentation Grant for his project Panggung Digital 1.9, which features recordings of dramatised readings of five radio dramas by established writers such as Cultural Medallion recipient Nadiputra and M. Saffri A Manaf. It can be viewed on YouTube and Facebook.

Mr Saiful said the grant was helpful. "All the projects we had planned were put on hold, so any form of support we would take with open arms. We had to plan something for this grant particularly. At least we artists had something to do, which we were remunerated for, rather than sitting and waiting for this whole thing to end."

Russia Covid-19 vaccine: Country to begin late-stage Sputnik V trials on 40,000 people next week - The Indian Express

Mass testing of Sputnik V, Russia's first potential vaccine for Covid-19, start next week involving more than 40,000 people, Reuters reported. The advanced trial for the vaccine to get domestic regulatory approval, will be overseen by a foreign research body, backers of the project said on Thursday.

These were the first details on the upcoming late-stage trial of the vaccine released by its developers, who are aiming to allay concerns raised by some scientists about the lack of data provided by Russia so far.

Even as Russia claimed to have approved the world's first coronavirus vaccine, the vaccine, dubbed as Sputnik V, hasn't gone through advanced trials normally required to prove that it works before being licensed, a violation of scientific protocol. Russian officials claimed the vaccine would provide lasting immunity to the viral infection yet have offered no proof yet.

1x1

Health officials and world leaders have criticised Russia for releasing the vaccine in haste, by rushing through the first two phases of clinical trials. Responding to Putin's claim, a spokesperson for the World Health Organisation (WHO) had said a few weeks back that "rigorous review" and assessment of the vaccine was needed before the global health body could recommend the use of the Russian vaccine, AFP reported.

Here are the latest developments so far:

Want to take time to get full info about the vaccine: Europe's WHO office

The World Health Organization's Europe office Thursday said it is trying to obtain more information on the experimental Covid-19 vaccine Russia recently approved and has begun "direct discussions" with the country regarding this, AP reported.

Catherine Smallwood, a senior emergency official at WHO Europe said the agency had begun "direct discussions" with Russia and that WHO officials have been sharing "the various steps and information that's going to be required for WHO to take assessments".

Acknowledging that Russia holds a long history of developing and administering vaccines, including those for yellow fever and polio, WHO's Europe director Dr Hans Kluge said that every vaccine must go through the same clinical trials. Russia's vaccine has so far only been tested on a few dozen people.

"This concern that we have around safety and efficacy is not specifically for the Russia vaccine, it's for all of the vaccines under development," news agency AP quoted Smallwood as saying. She said WHO was taking an "accelerated approach" to try to speed development of coronavirus vaccines but said "it's essential we don't cut corners in safety or efficacy… We're not going through a rushed job of trying to jump to conclusions here," Smallwood said. "We want to take our time to really understand where the vaccine's at and to get as full information as possible on the steps that have already been taken," she added.

The Indian embassy in Moscow is in touch with the Russian medical research institute that has developed the world's first Covid-19 vaccine to be cleared for use by the public, top government sources told The Indian Express.

"The Indian Mission is engaging separately with the Russian side through our embassy in Moscow. We are now awaiting the safety and efficacy data of this vaccine for Covid-19," a source said.

Western experts have been skeptical about the Russian claim, given the speed and secrecy with which the Gamaleya candidate has been given regulatory approval. Developing a vaccine is a complex and lengthy process, and the candidate must pass extensive field trials before it is cleared for human use. The Sputnik V candidate has been approved without being put through final phase 3 human trials.

Mexico exploring phase 3 trials of Russian coronavirus vaccine

In an effort secure early supplies of an effective drug to treat the viral infection, Mexico told Moscow Wednesday it would like to carry out Phase 3 of testing Russia's Covid-19 vaccine. After a meeting with Russia's ambassador to Mexico, Viktor Koronelli, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard took to Twitter saying he had expressed interest in carrying out large scale human trials "to have the vaccine as soon as possible in Mexico."

Earlier this week, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would volunteer to be among the first people to try the Russian vaccine if it proved effective. Mexico has also agreed to help manufacture another vaccine candidate being developed by Britain's AstraZeneca and Oxford University to supply the Latin American market.

Philippines, Serbia ready to take trials

While several leaders and scientists have criticised Putin for releasing the vaccine without adequately testing it first, others, like the Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, said they are ready to work with Russia to purchase the vaccine.

The Philippines President went as far as volunteering to be injected with vaccine himself in order to alleviate fears. "I will tell President (Vladimir) Putin that I have huge trust in your studies in combating COVID and I believe that the vaccine that you have produced is really good for humanity," he said in a public address earlier this week. "I can be the first they can experiment on."

The presidential spokesman said Harry Roque Philippines plans to launch clinical trials for a Russian coronavirus vaccine in October, with President Rodrigo Duterte expected to be inoculated as early as May next year,

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic joined Duterte to praise Russia for developing an 'effective' vaccine so quickly. He, too, said that he would be happy to be the first person to be injected with the vaccine, as long as it is given a green signal by Serbian scientists.

"Our specialists must just confirm to us that it is safe and reliable. It is important that the vaccine appears as soon as possible because it will save our economy," he told reporters during a press briefing.

Behind Gurianov's 4-goal game, Stars eliminate Flames - Reuters

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:42 AM PDT

Denis Gurianov collected four goals in a five-point game to pace Dallas to a 7-3 comeback victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday in Edmonton, and the Stars clinched their first-round Western Conference playoff series in six games.

Miro Heiskanen netted one goal and three assists for the Stars, who trailed 3-0 before they even recorded a shot on goal but roared to a victory that claimed the best-of-seven set.

The third-seeded Stars will face the second-seeded Colorado Avalanche in the second round.

Gurianov became the second rookie in NHL history to produce a four-goal playoff game, joining Tony Hrkac (1988 St. Louis Blues). He is the fifth player in Stars/North Stars history to notch a playoff hat trick.

Joe Pavelski added a goal and two assists, Radek Faksa also scored, and Anton Khudobin made 38 saves for Dallas.

Andrew Mangiapane, Johnny Gaudreau and Rasmus Andersson scored for Calgary.

With the Flames ahead 3-0, Heiskanen provided a much-needed jolt just before the midway point of the opening period by blasting a short-side slap shot on the power play to put his team on the board.

Gurianov, who scored 20 goals in the truncated season, registered the first goal in his career-defining game 59 seconds into the second period to make it a one-goal deficit.

Gurianov's second of the game, a deflection tally, tied the clash at the 3:25 mark of the middle frame, and Calgary's starting goalie Cam Talbot was pulled in favor of David Rittich, having made only five saves.

After Faksa put the Stars ahead with another power-play goal at 5:47 of the second, the eventual game-winner, Pavelski scored to make it a 5-3 clash, burying a rebound just 1:35 later.

Gurianov completed his hat trick with 4:30 remaining in the second period.

With Talbot back in the net, Gurianov rounded out his scoring spree in the middle of the third period.

It was a crushing defeat for the Flames, who wasted their best period of the series.

Mangiapane opened the scoring at the 3:42 mark, deflecting T.J. Brodie's point shot, and then Gaudreau banked in a sharp-angled shot at the 5:38 mark. When Andersson lit the lamp 56 seconds later, they Flames appeared ready to force a seventh game, but they saw those hopes dashed.

Talbot wound up with 11 saves on 15 shots faced. Rittich yielded three goals on nine shots.

Mexico to participate in clinical trials of Russian Covid-19 vaccine - Newsd.in

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:08 AM PDT

Mexico City, Aug 21 (IANS) Mexico has been offered at least 2,000 doses of a Russian Covid-19 vaccine and is to take part in its clinical trials, said Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

This is "very good news because once again we are gaining time", Xinhua news agency quoted Ebrard as saying on Thursday.

The Minister and Russian Ambassador to Mexico Viktor Koronelli met on Wednesday to discuss the country's participation in testing the "Sputnik V" vaccine developed by Russia's Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology.

"It will arrive in Mexico to begin testing. I will announce the date very soon, but yesterday both the offer and the acceptance were formalized," Ebrard said.

Mexico has agreed to help produce a Covid-19 vaccine for Latin America developed by the UK's Oxford University and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, said Ebrard.

Phase three trials of a vaccine developed by US pharmaceutical firm Johnson & Johnson are likely to begin in September, he added.

Mexico has so far reported a total of 543,806 coronavirus cases with 59,106 deaths, according health authorities.
