Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT Issued on: Modified: Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday strongly denied that his powerful Shiite movement had stored arms at Beirut's port, describing the cataclysmic explosion there as "a major tragedy". Advertising "We have nothing in the port: not an arms depot, nor a missile depot nor missiles nor rifles nor bombs nor bullets nor (ammonium) nitrate," Nasrallah said in a televised speech three days after the blast in the Lebanese capital that killed more than 150 people. He called the explosion a "major tragedy and humanitarian catastrophe," saying it required a kind of response that would match its "exceptional" scale. The blast injured at least 5,000 people and devastated entire districts of the capital, leaving some 300,000 people temporarily homeless. An investigation by authorities has so far led to 21 arrests, as well as travel bans and asset freezes. Authorities had said a fire at the port had ignited tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored there for years, but President Michel Aoun said Friday it could have been caused by an attack. FRANCE 24 speaks with the Lebanese Ambassador to France, Rami Adwan Aoun rejected calls for an international probe while Nasrallah urged "the army to investigate and announce its findings". He said the Lebanese military is in a prime position to do so because it is seen as a "trusted" institution by people and politicians across the spectrum. The Hezbollah leader warned against delays in the probe, saying: "If the Lebanese state and the political class... do not reach a conclusion in the investigations this means... there is no hope to build a state." International assistance International assistance swiftly flooded into Lebanon after the blast and French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday made a snap, but influential, visit to Beirut, where he pressed leaders for change and announced an international aid conference in the coming days. He met with several Lebanese leaders, including Hezbollah representatives on his one-day trip. Nasrallah praised the international community for its outpouring of support in the wake of the blast, but singled out Macron's visit as "the most significant". "We look positively at any assistance and any expression of sympathy towards Lebanon," he said. Hezbollah is the only group not to have disarmed after Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, and it fought Israeli troops who occupied southern Lebanon until 2000. It commands a majority in government and parliament along with its political allies. Hezbollah has also been a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad in neighbouring Syria, where it fights alongside regime forces. Trump moves on China apps may create new internet 'firewall' - RFI Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT ![]() Issued on: Advertising Washington (AFP) A ban by President Donald Trump's administration on Chinese mobile apps such as TikTok and WeChat risks fragmenting an already fragile global internet and creating an American version of China's "Great Firewall." Fears about the global internet ecosystem intensified this week with Trump's executive orders banning the popular video app TikTok and Chinese social network WeChat, following a US government directive to prohibit the use of other "untrusted" applications and services from China. The restrictions announced on the basis of what Trump called national security threats move further away from the long-promoted American ideal of a global, open internet and could invite other countries to follow suit, analysts said. "It's really an attempt to fragment the internet and the global information society along US and Chinese lines, and shut China out of the information economy," said Milton Mueller, a Georgia Tech University professor and founder of the Internet Governance Project. Mueller said this represents a move "to create a Western firewall" similar to the Chinese barrier, which would be enforced with US economic sanctions globally. This could backfire on Silicon Valley giants which dominate the online world outside China because "there are lots of nationalistic governments around the world which could make the same claims about Apple and Google and Facebook and Twitter, that they are sucking up data," Mueller said. "It will be open season on nationalistic blockages and regulations on these social media apps." - 'Clean Network' plan - Trump made good this week on his threats against WeChat and TikTok -- two apps with major audiences. Using executive order authority, Trump gave Americans 45 days to stop doing business with the Chinese platforms, effectively setting a deadline for a potential, under-pressure sale of TikTok by its parent firm ByteDance to Microsoft. His actions follow a "Clean Network" directive from the State Department that would bar "untrusted" apps and services from China from being used by American carriers and installed on devices in the US. This could lead to a competitive and confusing situation in parts of the world forced to choose between the US and Chinese ecosystems, said independent technology analyst Richard Windsor. "The digital divide between China and the West is coming down and countries caught in the middle (Africa and parts of Asia) will have to decide on which side they wish to remain," Windsor said on his Radio Free Mobile blog. - 'Cyber sovereignty' move - Adam Segal, director of the digital and cyberspace policy program at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the US actions point to a notion of "cyber sovereignty" long promoted by China and opposed by the United States. "This is really a Chinese idea, that (a country) has the right to separate itself from the global internet by banning or limiting foreign technology," Segal said. "The US used to argue the opposite, that we want a free and open internet." Segal noted that the global internet has been "on shaky ground" amid moves in Russia, India and other countries to limit data flows. But the actions by Washington this week "undermine the US ability to promote these ideas, and could have some backlash for US companies," he said. Daniel Castro of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation said the US actions suggest "a serious risk of internet fragmentation" if carried out. "The United States should be careful about arguing that there is an inherent national security risk of using technologies from foreign companies," Castro said. "If other countries apply that same logic, US tech companies will be locked out of many foreign markets." Mueller said Trump's actions are based on nebulous security concerns and a misguided notion of countering China's rising power. "The Trump administration thinks they can somehow stifle China's development as an economic and technological power," he said. "The idea that we can stop Chinese development by cutting them off is stupid, it's not going to happen." © 2020 AFP Top stories - Google News August 07, 2020 at 12:51PM https://ift.tt/3fGfP9O Trump moves on China apps may create new internet 'firewall' - RFI Top stories - Google News https://ift.tt/2FLTecc Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Emmys: Breaking Down the Odds for Best Actress in a Drama Series - Hollywood Reporter Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:48 PM PDT ![]() HBO Why she might win: The 23-year-old former Disney Channel star would become this category's youngest-ever winner (besting Comer, who won last year at 26). Her performance as a teenage recovering drug addict nabbed a Critics' Choice nom and was hailed by THR as "career-defining." Why she might not win: None of these nominees' shows had a season with fewer episodes (eight, tied with Killing Eve), the most recent of which debuted in August. It received fewer noms than anyone else's, and no series nom. This story first appeared in an August stand-alone issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Counties say 3 businesses had viral exposure - Times Union Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:47 PM PDT ![]() Capital Region residents who went to any of three local eateries last week are being advised to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms after employees there tested positive for coronavirus. Saratoga County health officials said Friday that recent visitors to the Saratoga 5 Points Market & Deli in Saratoga Springs and Halfmoon Burger King may have been exposed. The risk of exposure would have been low, they said, as the infected employees wore masks for the entirety of their shifts. Schenectady County also issued an alert regarding Frog Alley Brewing in Schenectady. A person diagnosed with COVID-19 visited the brewery for about three hours the night of July 31, they said. It was unclear if the infected person was aware of their infection the night they went out or if they wore a mask. The county declined to comment, but said the brewery has followed all county health department guidance and is cooperating with its investigation. Here are dates and times of the potential exposures: Saratoga 5 Points Market and Deli 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday, July 29 10 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Thursday July 30 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Friday, July 31 Halfmoon Burger King 4:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 5:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 31 Frog Alley Brewing 9 p.m.-midnight Friday, July 31 Anyone who visited these locations at the times listed should monitor themselves for signs or symptoms of COVID-19, which can include fever, chills, cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, body aches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion and runny nose. If symptoms develop, the person should stay home and contact their local county health department and primary care doctor, officials said. New virus cases The eight-county Capital Region recorded 28 new cases of the virus Friday, up five from the day before. The five-day rolling average of new daily cases is now 32 — up from 29 the day before but down from last month's high of 52. While July saw several spikes in new cases that local officials attributed to large gatherings, Fourth of July parties and travel, new cases appear to be trending downward again. The percentage of people in the region testing positive was 0.9 percent on Tuesday, 0.8 percent on Wednesday and 0.7 percent on Thursday. In Albany County, officials said five of their 11 new cases Friday stemmed from people who had close contact with an infected person, four had no clear source of transmission, and one was a health care worker. Meanwhile, the number of area residents with active coronavirus infections fell by four Friday to 261. Thirty were hospitalized. Statewide, there were 70,000 COVID-19 tests conducted across the state Thursday, with the infection rate hovering at 1 percent, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. Numbers have remained flat across the state while other states nationwide have seen surges in cases. Five New Yorkers died from the disease Thursday, 579 were hospitalized with 139 people in the ICU and 66 people intubated. "That is all great news, especially when you're considering what's going on around us. Not only across the country, but even in our region, our performance is extraordinary in this sea of spread," Cuomo said. "Our numbers are great because we are doing what we need to do." The governor again stressed the need for local governments to step up to enforce the restrictions in place – like wearing face masks and limiting capacity at various business establishments. State Police along with the State Liquor Authority have been citing businesses for non-compliance and issued 15 violations to downstate establishments Thursday. Help for the homeless Albany County Executive Dan McCoy invited Michele McClave, the county's Department of Social Services commissioner, and Liz Hitt, executive director of the Albany-based Homeless and Travelers Aid Society, to join him at his coronavirus briefing Friday. To date, county DSS has worked with area motels to isolate 64 homeless people who were either infected with the virus or exposed to someone who was, McCoy said. "You can imagine it's like a ripple effect in the homeless community when people aren't socially distancing and wearing masks and they're sharing alcohol together or drinking out of the same bottle or sharing drugs," he said. "It was something we really had to address and get really deep into to make sure that we stopped the spread to the best of our ability." McClave and Hitt noted that homeless people are at particularly high risk for complications from COVID-19 because they typically fall into older age groups and have pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes, heart issues, and drug and alcohol addiction. "Housing is health care," Hitt said. "If you don't have some place to live how do you social distance? How do you isolate? How do you wash your hands?" The county's homeless shelters adopted federal guidelines designed to reduce the spread of infection, including daily deep cleaning and temperature checks, box meals instead of group meals, and requiring staff and clients to wear masks while inside. While the state's moratorium on evictions during the pandemic led to a drop in the number of homeless families, McClave said she is worried about what will happen when the moratorium runs out. "There's a lot of people I know in the queue for evictions and it's very concerning to the community about the number of people who are going to need assistance when that happens," she said. Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:42 PM PDT ![]() You get to come back from three goals and win! And you get to come back from three goals! After squandering a 3-0 lead and losing in overtime to the Blue Jackets in Game 3, the Maple Leafs had their turn Friday night in Game 4. Trailing 3-0 with 3:57 left in regulation, Toronto mounted a furious comeback capped by Zach Hyman's tying goal with just 23 seconds remaining. Then in overtime, Auston Matthews sent the series to a Game 5 on Sunday with a power-play goal. "We've got new life here now . . . we were getting CPR there for a little bit," Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe with a little bit of a laugh, adding, "and then we found our way back." The first-year bench boss put his lines in a blender at times, but in the end, he got what he needed from his star core of Matthews, captain John Tavares, Mitch Marner and William Nylander; those four combined for 10 points and played roles on every goal. "Resilence," Keefe said about the core. "Just that they weren't going to quit . . . once we got one and got a little bit of life, they kept pushing." Regardless of the score, Elvis Merzlikins was masterful in net for Columbus in his first NHL postseason start. He faced 53 shots over the 73-plus minutes of action. At the other end, Toronto netminder Frederik Andersen stopped 36 of 39. Toronto was the first team Friday to avoid elimination. The Islanders, Coyotes, Canadiens and Blackhawks sent the Panthers, Predators, Penguins and Oilers, respectively, out of the NHL bubble. Sporting News had all the action as the Maple Leafs kept their season alive. Maple Leafs vs. Blue Jackets scores, highlights(All times Eastern) Final score: Maple Leafs 4, Blue Jackets 3 (OT)Overtime: Maple Leafs 4, Blue Jackets 311:08 p.m. — GOAL. On the ensuing power play, Auston Matthews buries a cross-ice pass that slides right across the hash marks. Maple Leafs win 4-3. 11:07 p.m. — Rielly draws a penalty and slams into boards. Announcers thought he was hurt but he stays in the game. After Columbus touches, the offender, Foligno, flips the puck at him. 10:58 p.m. — Travis Dermott with a big-time, gutsy block right in the slot to save a sure goal. 10:50 p.m. — Hyman, looking for his second, is stopped, and then the Blue Jackets get a couple of good looks at the other end. 10:48 p.m. — Auston Matthews with a solid chance right above the crease; he comes close to ending things less than 30 seconds in. 10:48 p.m — Werenski not on the bench for Columbus. 10:43 p.m. — And a quick reminder, these two teams played overtime Thursday night, too. 10:41 p.m. — Quick note, Zach Werenski's last shift ended at 9:08 of the third period. His status is unknown. Third period: Maple Leafs 3, Blue Jackets 310:31 p.m. — And just like that, we head to overtime. 10:30 p.m. — GOAL. With 23 seconds left on the clock, Zach Hyman from the left circle slides the puck past Elvis. Leafs score three goals in three minutes and 32 seconds to, for now, stay alive. Game tied at 3. 10:29 p.m. — Tavares has a chance but his stick is lifted from behind at the last second. 10:29 p.m. — Marner comes close. 10:28 p.m. — Wow. Dubois with a good look at the empty net and it hits the outside and gets stuck between the netting and the plastic. 10:25 p.m. — GOAL. Wow. With a little over three minutes left, Tavares finally converts in the slot. Moments earlier, Columbus misses an empty net chance inside the Leafs zone. Blue Jackets lead 3-2. 10:24 p.m. — GOAL. Leafs finally get on the board as Nylander buries the rebound in the crease. Blue Jackets lead 3-1. 10:19 p.m. — GOAL. Morgan Rielly is pressured by Foligno in his own end and goes down. The Blue Jackets captain takes the puck and feeds a wide-open Boone Jenner, who beats Andersen. Rielly takes it out on his stick on the bench. Blue Jackets lead 3-0. 10:15 p.m. — Time remaining = 8:44. 10:10 p.m. — Marner takes a penalty. Not a good move when your team trails 2-0 and is on the verge of being eliminated. They would ultimately kill the penalty.
10:08 p.m. — Morgan Rielly with a good shot below the hash marks but Elvis is there. 10:06 p.m. — Eight minutes in and the Leafs have three shots and one off the crossbar. 9:58 p.m. — Liam Foudy, who won gold with Canada at World Juniors in January, rings one off the post. 9:56 p.m. — Third period begins. Second period: Blue Jackets 2, Maple Leafs 09:36 p.m. — Nyquist is pulled down by Morgan Rielly with 22 seconds left in the period after a spin-o-rama. Columbus will start the final frame on the power play for 1:38. 9:34 p.m. — Tavares again, on a new power-play session. Looks to the skies afterward. Tavares leading the Leafs with five shots on net. 9:30 p.m. — Tavares again stopped in front. The Leafs captain is definitely engaged tonight. 9:29 p.m. — After a few ticks of 4-on-4, the Leafs head to the power play. 9:28 p.m. — Zach Hyman bodies out Foligno for the puck along the wall in the neutral zone and then draws a penalty. Can clearly hear "NO!" from Foligno; fair to say he didn't like the call. 9:26 p.m. — More pleasantries. Kerfoot and Atkinson get roughing penalties. 9:23 p.m. — The veteran Spezza drops the gloves with Kukan, but he takes a minor beforehand. The fight may spark the Leafs but the penalty kill may not. 9:21 p.m. — Oh. Gavrikov with the celly. 9:13 p.m. — William Nylander streaking down the right wing and once again it's Elvis. The Blue Jackets netminder is locked in. 9:12 p.m. — Tavares with a big-time rebound chance but Elvis with the stop 9:10 p.m. — With no fans in attendance, you can really hear teams celebrate goals and it's kinda cool. 9:06 p.m. — GOAL. Vladislav Gavrikov's shot from the point goes off Marner's stick and past Andersen. Blue Jackets lead 2-0. 9:04 p.m. — Leafs' best line tonight has been its fourth line (Jason Spezza, Pierre Engvall, Kyle Clifford) and they just crashed the net and came oh, so close to tying things up. 9:01 p.m. — Middle frame is a go. Toronto scored 86 goals in the second period during the regular season, the most in any period. First period: Blue Jackets 1, Maple Leafs 08:43 p.m. — Period comes to a close. Blue Jackets lead 1-0; sadly no cannons were fired. Leafs with the lead in shot advantage (15-13) and high-danger chances for (3-2) . 8:41 p.m. — Columbus kills the penalty. Leafs now 1-for-9 with the man advantage in the series. 8:38 p.m. — On a delayed call, Auston Matthews with a good shot from the right circle. Leafs head to the power play. 8:37 p.m. — Tyson Barrie with a point shot that Elvis can't corral but neither can the Leafs in front. 8:36 p.m. — Andersen makes a few stops at the side of the net to keep it a one-goal game. 8:26 p.m. — Leafs getting some pressure. Pierre Engvall tries to send the point shot in but it trickles towards the post and Elvis jumps on the puck. 8:19 p.m. — Nick Robertson with a chance off a pass from John Tavares. The 18-year-old, who scored his first NHL goal in Game 3 , is skating on a line with Tavares and Nylander. Big sliding pad save by Elvis. 8:15 p.m. — GOAL. Pierre-Luc Dubois blows past Justin Holl setting up a 2-on-1 and Cam Atkinson finishes. Blue Jackets lead 1-0. 8:11 p.m. — Not sure how to explain what just happened but I'll give-it-a-go: Elvis and Seth Jones miscommunicate at the side of the net. Mitch Marner gets the puck but has to avoid Elvis' loose stick in his feet. He comes around but Elvis still somehow makes the stop. 8:10 p.m. — Game on. Will Columbus close things out? Or, will the Leafs live to fight another day? Pregame7:39 p.m. — All eyes are on warm-ups.
3:45 p.m. — Some tweaks to the Blue Jackets lineup.
12:56 p.m. — The Leafs coach has turned the page. Has his team?

Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT ![]() Joe Biden's campaign team accused Trump of showing "weakness" by claiming that him becoming president would "hurt God". Speaking at an airport in Cleveland, Ohio, Trump described his conception of the United States under Biden.
Biden, a lifelong practising Catholic, has spoken publicly about his faith helping him through the death of his wife and children. Trump's comments appear to have been prompted by his neck-and-neck polling numbers with Biden in Ohio, a crucial state he won by just eight points in 2016. A spokesperson for Biden's campaign, Andrew Bates, accused Trump of desperation for attacking Biden's faith.
Trump's latest campaign video includes out of context images of Biden, doctored to make him look dejected. People pointed out the differences between the original and edited photos by sharing them side by side. In one, Biden appears to be bowing his head in despair: he was actually praying in a church in Delaware. In another, Biden's microphone was removed to make him appear "diminished". And in another, he's accused of being "alone" despite being in a room full of people. Biden also personally responded to Trump's comment that he would "hurt God".
Trump identifies as Presbyterian, but he is not generally known for his religious faith. Pew research suggests that fewer than half of Americans think that Trump is a Christian, despite his efforts to engage this voter base by surrounding himself with evangelical leaders and lawmakers like vice president Mike Pence. His attack on Biden's religion is unlikely to be effective, according to former Republic National Committee communications director Douglas Heye. He said:

Trump’s WeChat Ban Brings Cold War With China Into a Billion Homes - Yahoo Finance Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT (Bloomberg) -- With the stroke of a pen, Donald Trump made his strategic fight with China hit home for potentially billions of people -- generating confusion, panic and fear around the globe. The U.S. president's move to ban the Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat in just over six weeks from now sent shockwaves through the tech industry and the many American businesses who rely on the apps to sell goods in China. The decision also spurred alarm on Chinese social media, with WeChat users in the U.S. posting contact information so friends and family could reach them if the app disappeared. An online forum popular with stock investors asked users if they would give up their iPhones or WeChat if Apple Inc. eliminated the app from its store: They voted to ditch their phones by a margin of 20 to one. Of all Trump's shots against China, from imposing tariffs to battling Huawei Technologies Co. to ending Hong Kong's special trading status, the executive orders against TikTok and WeChat potentially have the widest impact. Beyond the financial blow, they threaten to sever communication links among the people of the world's biggest economies in addition to spurring a decoupling of the tech industry that could ripple around the world. "This move points to a hegemonic war -- the U.S. is trying to suppress China's rise as a super power," said Yik Chan Chin, who researches global media and communications policy at the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou. "All these things will leave a bad impression in China, and the tide of nationalism is already very high right now." It's hard to overstate how ingrained WeChat and Tencent are in China and among its diaspora: WeChat, which has more than 1 billion users and is owned by Tencent Holdings Ltd., is relied upon so heavily that many people have never exchanged phone numbers or emails. From Wal-Mart Inc. and Starbucks Corp. to the NBA and Nike Inc., nearly every major American consumer brand with business in China is deeply intertwined with Tencent and its network, which includes WeChat and investee JD.com. Jason Gui, co-founder of San Francisco-based startup Vue Smart Glasses, said his team has to rely on WeChat to communicate with suppliers in China and a ban would be very "disruptive." Emails sent to manufacturers in China are often unanswered for days, whereas inquiries through WeChat will get immediate attention, he said. "When the U.S. imposes these bans, they may not realize how intertwined the relationships between U.S. and China have become," he said. "Our communication lifeline with China depends on WeChat. It hurts small businesses that have limited resources to figure out how to circumvent these bans." 'Hot War' China officially reacted with caution on Friday, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin defending the companies and saying the U.S. "is using national security as an excuse and using state power to oppress non-American businesses." Just a day earlier, Foreign Minister Wang Yi tried to offer an olive branch by urging the U.S. to "reject decoupling" and stop "any attempt to artificially create a so-called 'new Cold War.'" Yang Jiechi, a Politburo member, said the door for talks with the U.S. is still open. Trump's administration has stepped up its campaign against China in recent weeks, betting that a hard line against Beijing will help him win November's election despite upsetting millions of younger TikTok users. The U.S. also announced on Friday it is placing sanctions on 11 Chinese officials and their allies in Hong Kong, including Chief Executive Carrie Lam, over their role in curtailing political freedoms in the former U.K. colony. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo meanwhile has urged American companies to bar Chinese applications from their app stores, part of his "Clean Network" guidance designed to prevent China from accessing the personal data of U.S. citizens. Pompeo's comments have generated alarm in China. Hu Xijin, editor of the Communist Party's Global Times newspaper, suggested a division of the internet that stifles commerce and ties between people would prompt the risk of a "hot war" to rise. But for many U.S. officials, the bans are simple reciprocity. China walled off its own online sphere years ago, creating an alternate universe where Tencent and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. stood in for Facebook Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. Yet while President Xi Jinping was an early proponent of cyber-sovereignty, China's view has changed as its tech champions have become fierce global competitors. By banning certain apps, the U.S. is also looking to deprive China of valuable data that is essential for honing the algorithms that will fuel the modern economy powered by artificial intelligence. The U.S. also potentially has a lot to lose in terms of soft power. Beyond angering the roughly 5 million Chinese Americans, and hundreds of thousands of Chinese students in America, there's also the risk that other countries start to ban U.S. technology. 'Awful for America' "Pretty much any large country can kick out Facebook and make their own social network if they want to legislate that," said Matthew Brennan, managing director of marketing consultancy China Channel. "That would be awful for America. But that's the road we're going towards with this kind of legislation." While the short-term economic impact won't be large, the decoupling of the tech industries will ultimately lead to slower global growth in the long run, according to Shaun Roache, Asia-Pacific chief economist at S&P Global Ratings. And they could ultimately be more significant than the trade deal, which is one of the few areas of cooperation that remain. "These sorts of measures on technology are as serious if not more serious than tariffs because these are the growth industries of the futures," Roache said. "Once you erect barriers how do you take them down? That's the question." Ronaldo breaks all-time Juventus scoring record with Lyon double - Goal.com Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:42 PM PDT ![]() Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo broke the club record for most goals in a single season on Friday with his double against Lyon in the Champions League. The Bianconeri went into the clash needing a positive result to advance to the quarter-finals, having gone down 1-0 in the last-16 opener all the way back in February. Though Ronaldo scored a pair of goals to reach 37 on the season, Juventus crashed out of the Champions League after defeating Lyon 2-1 on the night and falling on away goals in a 2-2 aggregate result. Memphis Depay converted in style from the spot to open the scoring on Friday after Rodrigo Bentancur gave away a contentious spot-kick. With Ronaldo in the team, however, there is always the potential for goals, and the Portugal captain proved as much by netting at the end of the first half to keep Juve in the tie. Referee Felix Zwayer spotted a handball from Depay and pointed to the spot in a decision every bit as polemic as that which led to the Lyon striker's opener. And there was little doubt over the outcome as Cristiano stepped up, the forward this time sending Lopes the wrong way to pull back the scoreline to 1-1. It was Ronaldo's 36th goal of the season for Juve in all competitions, with 31 coming in Serie A, three in the Champions League and two in the side's victorious Coppa Italia campaign. Ronaldo would net again in the 60th minute, scoring his 37th goal of the campaign. The Portugal star picked up the ball on the edge of the box and blasted a shot from distance that Lopes could only get a touch on as it went in. That strike was enough to write the 35-year-old into the team's history books as their highest all-time scorer over a single season. The record had been held for more than 80 years by club legend Felice Borel, who in 1933-34 scored 36 across Serie A and the defunct Mitropa Cup, leading the Bianconeri to the Scudetto in the process. To cap that memorable season, Borel went on to represent Italy at the 1934 World Cup, making one appearance as the Azzurri triumphed in France.
Lyon, like so many other top European clubs, must be sick of the sight of Juve's current sharpshooter. Friday's goals mean that Ronaldo has now scored against the French club representing three different sides, a feat previously managed only by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jorg Butt against Bayern Munich and Juventus respectively. Beirut Explosion Looks Like An Accident — And A Sign Of The Country's Collapse - NPR Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT ![]() Tuesday's blast in Beirut killed some 150 people, wounded thousands and caused destruction across half the city. Hassan Ammar/AP hide caption When Westerners think of Beirut, they might rely on dated notions of the city: a 15-year civil war that ended in 1990; a war with Israel and sporadic airstrikes; bombings of the U.S. Marine barracks and the U.S. Embassy; an attack 15 years ago on the prime minister's convoy. So it may seem hard to believe that the biggest blast of them all — the one at the Beirut port on Tuesday, which killed some 150 people, wounded thousands and caused destruction across half the city — was an accident, possibly the outcome of neglect on a massive scale. But that's what signs point to now. Officials have launched an investigation looking at the port warehouse that had held 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used for fertilizer and as an ingredient in bombs. It has fueled many explosions around the world — both accidental and intentional. Lebanese officials say there has been concern about this volatile cargo for years, something Prime Minister Hassan Diab noted publicly in the first hours after the blast. So, rather than war or terrorism, this blast brings to a head something else about Lebanon — the deep paralysis, official corruption and unaccountability that Lebanese demonstrators had been protesting in huge numbers for months before the coronavirus pandemic shut them down. Here are some of the factors that shed light on this week's catastrophe. Explosive chemicals languish at the port In 2013, a ship filled with 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stopped at the Lebanese port. It had a Russian crew, and reports say it was bound for Mozambique. The ship's former captain told Reuters this week that he had been instructed to stop in Beirut to pick up more cargo, but there was a legal dispute over port fees and the shipping company was in debt. Lawyers representing some of the crew said in 2015 that the ship had stopped at the Beirut port with "technical problems." The ammonium nitrate, a fairly common cargo on the oceans, was impounded and unloaded; the crew had to stay on board for nearly a year and was then released. The port's customs director says he sounded several alarms about the material. Since the blast, some port officials have been placed under house arrest. A city of neglect and shortages In 2015, trash choked Lebanon's streets amid corruption and infighting over solid waste contracts. The garbage crisis spawned a protest movement dubbed "You Stink." ![]() The investigation into the massive explosion at Beirut's port is looking at the warehouse that had held 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate. Anwar Amro/AFP via Getty Images hide caption More crises would come. High government debt and mismanagement caused an economic collapse. There's hyperinflation. Unemployment is high. The country's once-comfortable middle class is slipping into poverty. People have trouble buying bread and are selling their possessions. Lengthy daily power outages have resulted after a corruption scandal disrupted fuel imports from Algeria. And with the country's currency losing 80% of its value since October, the government is struggling to pay for fuel from elsewhere. Widespread street protests started a year ago. Chanting slogans like "The people want the fall of the regime" and "All means all," protesters called for the removal of the entire political class. A rigidly divided political system Who's responsible for all this? That's hard to say, in part because Lebanon's government is designed for no single group to be too powerful — or accountable. Lebanon's civil war ended in 1990 with a deal — enforced by neighboring Syria — to divide power among sectarian factions. The presidency is set aside for a Christian, the prime minister is a Sunni Muslim and the speaker of parliament is always a Shiite Muslim. It means that the real decisions are made behind closed doors and that elections allow limited choice for the voting public. The various sectarian groups tend to protect the status quo to ensure they each can hang onto as much power as possible. Some sectarian leaders are former warlords and worried they could face revenge or prosecution if the system changes. The presence of Hezbollah further complicates matters. The Shiite Muslim group is not officially part of Lebanon's power-sharing deal but enjoys support from Shiites and some Christians and holds seats in parliament. More importantly, it has the most muscle on the ground. Its militia drove Israel from the country in the late 1990s and rivals the Lebanese military in firepower. The group runs the country's international airport and gets money from vast business interests and from Iran. In other words, the fragmented nature of Lebanese power makes it hard to organize a protest campaign targeting a single leadership — and to vote, or force, it out of power. Full circle: Investigating the blast Lebanon's prime minister and president have formed an investigative committee to find the cause of the blast and those responsible. ![]() On Wednesday, a Lebanese couple inspects the damage to their house in an area overlooking the destroyed Beirut port the day before. Joseph Eid/AFP via Getty Images hide caption But already the country's elites are trading blame. The Ministry of Public Works and port authorities say the explosion was the fault of the judiciary, which allegedly did not act on repeated requests by port officials for a legal release of the cargo. Judicial officials have hit back, saying that politicians are trying to scapegoat them and that the investigative committee is not impartial. They say an investigation led by establishment politicians and security officials loyal to them — rather than by independent investigators — will not bring justice. Lebanon's elites and political leaders — including Hezbollah, the U.S. Treasury Department believes — have long had interests at the Beirut port, which brings in most of the country's imports. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah denied Friday that his group controls the port. "People think that Hezbollah knows everything that goes on in the Beirut port," he said. "Hezbollah does not run or control Beirut's port and does not interfere with it." For Lebanese who have no confidence in their leaders, the destruction of Beirut is the ultimate example of the political rot that for too long has benefited the few at the cost of the country. A crowd yelling, "Resign, resign, resign!" chased the justice minister and threw water on her Thursday, when she tried to visit a Beirut neighborhood. A popular slogan is "Hang the nooses." Now, Lebanese say, is not the time for compromise. But with the system rigged against them, the road to meaningful change will be a long and difficult. Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT ![]() Russia is trying to "undermine" presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden's candidacy, while China and Iran are against President Donald Trump's reelection, a leading U.S. intelligence official said Friday. The analysis of the three U.S. adversaries' alleged interference efforts came in a statement from William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, who said he released the information to help Americans "play a critical role in safeguarding our election." While many foreign actors have views on who should hold the White House, "We are primarily concerned about the ongoing and potential activity by China, Russia, and Iran," Evanina said. He warned that "foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters' preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people's confidence in our democratic process" ahead of the Nov. 3 election. "We are all in this together as Americans," Evanina said in the statement. "Our election should be our own. Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy." William Evanina, Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, answers a reporters question in Washington, DC. Bill O'Leary | The Washington Post | Getty Images At a press conference Friday evening, Trump himself pushed back on the findings of his own intelligence agencies. "It could be," Trump began when a reporter asked if he believed the assessment that Russia was attempting to meddle in the election against Biden. But he quickly added: "I think that the last person Russia wants to see in office is Donald Trump." When the reporter noted that the statement from U.S. intelligence in fact says the opposite, Trump shot back, "Well, I don't care what anybody says." "Nobody with any common sense would say" that Russia wanted him to win, Trump said. Asked what he planned to do about the alleged interference, Trump said, "Well, we're going to look at it very closely." The alleged preferences of Russia, China and Iran reflect how Trump and Biden have talked about them on the campaign trail. Trump in nearly every recent speaking appearance has criticized Beijing for its handling of the coronavirus, which first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus has since grown to a pandemic that has taken an immense toll on the United States: More than 4.88 million cases and at least 160,111 deaths from Covid-19 have been reported in the U.S., according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The Trump administration has also regularly condemned Iran and attacked it with punishing economic sanctions. Biden, meanwhile, has slammed Trump for failing to address Russian threats abroad – and his campaign continued that line of attack in response to Evanina's statement. "Donald Trump has publicly and repeatedly invited, emboldened, and even tried to coerce foreign interference in American elections," longtime Biden advisor Tony Blinken said in the response. Evanina's statement said that China wants Trump to lose in part because Beijing sees him as "unpredictable." "China has been expanding its influence efforts ahead of November 2020 to shape the policy environment in the United States, pressure political figures it views as opposed to China's interests, and deflect and counter criticism of China," it said. On Russia, U.S. intelligence assesses that the Kremlin "is using a range of measures to primarily denigrate former Vice President Biden and what it sees as an anti-Russia 'establishment.'" Russian officials are "spreading claims about corruption" to try to "undermine" Biden and the Democratic Party, the statement said. "Some Kremlin-linked actors are also seeking to boost President Trump's candidacy on social media and Russian television," it said. Evanina's statement also says that Iran "seeks to undermine U.S. democratic institutions, President Trump, and to divide the country in advance of the 2020 elections." Iran is likely focusing on online influence operations, including social-media disinformation campaigns and promulgating anti-American content. "Tehran's motivation to conduct such activities is, in part, driven by a perception that President Trump's reelection would result in a continuation of U.S. pressure on Iran in an effort to foment regime change," Evanina said. In response to the intelligence assessment, National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot said the U.S. "will not tolerate foreign interference in our electoral processes and will respond to malicious foreign threats that target our democratic institutions." "The United States is working to identify and disrupt foreign influence efforts targeting our political system, including efforts designed to suppress voter turnout or undermine public confidence in the integrity of our elections," Ullyot said. The Trump campaign used the report as fodder for another attack on Biden. "We don't need or want foreign interference, and President Trump will beat Joe Biden fair and square," said campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh. Philippines now has the worst Covid-19 outbreak in Southeast Asia - The Indian Express Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT By: Bloomberg | Published: August 7, 2020 9:31:22 am ![]() Despite imposing the longest, strictest lockdown in Southeast Asia, coronavirus cases in the Philippines have now surged to almost 120,000, eclipsing Indonesia to become the region's biggest outbreak. The country re-imposed this week a second lockdown on its capital and nearby areas to curb infection spread, even as the economy suffered its deepest contraction on record, shrinking 16.5% in the second quarter from a year ago. It's yet another example of how the premature easing of restrictions has given the virus an opening to come back even stronger, illustrated by the new waves of infection now sweeping countries in Asia and parts of Europe. In the Philippines, the virus's resurgence was fueled by testing gaffes and failures in quarantine protocol in the face of over 100,000 overseas workers arriving back home after losing their jobs in other countries. After enduring a strict lockdown from mid-March to the end of May, the Philippines re-opened its capital although new cases were still growing by up to a thousand every day. As people returned to offices and families gathered again, infections surged 500% in over two months of easing before the government re-imposed a lockdown this week. The Philippines reported 3,561 new infections on Thursday to take its total to 119,460, past Indonesia's 118,753. The rising number of cases is partly due to its heightened surveillance and increased testing, which is now the highest in Southeast Asia, the Department of Health said in a statement. The Philippines has tested 1.5% of its population compared to Indonesia's 0.34%, it said. President Rodrigo Duterte's government loosened restrictions too soon, without ensuring that local officials could trace and treat infections, said Anthony Leachon, an internist at the Manila Doctors Hospital. Problems with hospitals' capacity to accept patients were also recognized too late, he said. "When we realized it, the cases were too enormous for us to control and at a time when we are short on budget," said Leachon, a former adviser in the government's coronavirus task force. A protracted battle against the virus will deal another blow to the Philippine economy. Record-high unemployment and a steep decline in money sent home by Filipinos as they've lost jobs abroad have weighed on private consumption, which drives roughly two-thirds of GDP. Fitch Solutions Inc. drastically cut its outlook for the Philippines on Friday as a second lockdown likely delays recovery. It sees a 9.1% contraction this year from the previous estimate of a 2% decline. Workers' influx The nation's virus containment efforts were complicated by a deluge of returning overseas workers who had become unemployed due to the pandemic, failures in testing and a lack of qualified health-care professionals. Officials used rapid test kits, mostly manufactured in China, that promised to deliver results in minutes in an attempt to process the returning overseas workers quickly, but the kits delivered a high proportion of false negatives — allowing infected workers to return home to their families, unwittingly spreading the virus. "The over-reliance on rapid testing, which we know can miss about a third of Covid-positive patients, may have let some asymptomatic carriers through," said Edsel Salvana, an infectious disease expert from the National Institutes of Health at the University of the Philippines Manila. "Though the 14-day quarantine was still in place for incoming travelers, enforcement was variable." The Health Department will no longer use rapid test kits, and the new lockdown will give officials time to trace and treat all clusters of infections through house-to-house checks, said Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Wednesday. A University of the Philippines study based on government infection data estimated that tighter curbs could prevent up to 70,000 new cases. But there's growing evidence from other countries fighting resurgences, like Australia, that second lockdowns are not delivering results due to people tired of social distancing and unable to endure the further economic hit. In the Philippines, the military and the police have been deployed at checkpoints to enforce movement restrictions. Still, Duterte's government is projecting confidence about the outbreak, emphasizing that the health-care system will be now re-inforced by the thousands of nurses and doctors returning home who had previously held medical jobs overseas. The tendency for medical workers to go abroad due to poor conditions and bad pay at home had left the local hospital infrastructure quickly overwhelmed by the pandemic. The government is seeking to immediately hire 10,000 additional health workers, including those who've just returned home, with improved benefits like hazard pay, free life insurance and lodging, Vergeire said. "While cases are rising, we are confident they can be contained effectively and efficiently during this time," she said at a virtual briefing Wednesday, adding that the country now has more testing capacity, hospital beds and isolation facilities. 📣 The Indian Express is now on Telegram. What the Tech? Viral Facebook post hoax | What The Tech? - WFMZ Allentown Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT ![]() A viral Facebook post is making the rounds again and cluttering everyone's newsfeed. The post claims by copying and pasting it onto your own timeline and by commenting, liking or leaving a sticker on the friend's post, it will trick Facebook's algorithm into showing you posts of more friends. Here's one variation of the post: "So I'm doing what everyone else is doing. Fixing my blocked posts. I wondered where everybody had been! This is good to know. It's ridiculous to have 578 friends and only 25 are allowed to see posts. I ignored the post earlier because I didn't think it worked. It WORKS!! I have a whole new newsfeed. I'm seeing posts from people I haven't seen in years." Does it work? No. Well...in a way, I suppose it does. Contrary to what the post claims, Facebook does not limit the number of friends whose posts show up on your newsfeed. Its algorithm does place some friend's posts higher than others based on friends you've interacted with the most. It also places posts of friends who have friends or interests in common. This is to prevent posts from groups, pages, and friends you never interact with from clogging up your feed. You can have some control of who you see the most. It's easier to make these changes on a computer than it is on a mobile device. Go to settings and look for newsfeed preferences. There you'll see your friends and those you follow. It also displays friends you've chosen to see posts first by placing a blue star next to their name and profile photo. You can manage the list by removing and adding blue stars. Facebook does limit the number of friends here to 30, which may be where the number comes from in the viral post. If you want to see the most recent posts in your newsfeed, look for "newsfeed options" and click or tap "most recent." Note though that this reverts back to "top posts" later. The viral post making the rounds now first appeared at least 3 years ago and seems to go around every now and then when a few friends decide to post and share it again. It is not a scam and the post does not steal your information, data or friends list. It is a hoax, again sort of. Whether you post it or not will likely not change who you see in your newsfeed. By commenting or leaving a like or sticker, it will ensure you see more of their posts. But you were seeing them anyway. Richardson’s OT goal gives Coyotes series win over Predators - NHL Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT ![]() Brad Richardson's goal 5:27 into overtime gave the Coyotes a 4-3 win Friday, sending Nashville out of the Stanley Cup Qualifying Round in four games. The series win is Arizona's first since 2012 when they beat the Predators in five games to advance in the Second Round. As they've done in the series, the Predators dug holes that led to opportunities for Arizona. Continued mistakes in the defensive zone not only hindered their ability to create scoring chances (won by the Coyotes 27-26 at 5-on-5), but led to goals against. On Arizona's first goal, Craig Smith's pass to Kyle Turris in order to exit their zone led to a turnover that ended up on Michael Grabner's stick. The forward then wristed a shot over Juuse Saros' glove for his second goal of the series. [NBC 2020 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF HUB]Phil Kessel slapped home Arizona's second tally thanks to a poor pass from Saros to Roman Josi. The Predators didn't go down without a fight. Matt Duchene and Viktor Arvidsson tied the game in the second with goals four minutes apart. Jordan Oesterle looked to have put the Coyotes ahead for good, but a fantastic combination between Ryan Ellis and Filip Forsberg forced overtime with 31.9 seconds left.
Extra hockey didn't last long with Richardson's putting home his own rebound on the doorstep.
Darcy Kuemper (.954 even strength save percentage in the series) was once again solid in net for the Coyotes. He made 49 saves in Game 4, the third time in the series he's had to stop 40-plus shots. Arizona will face either the Avalanche or Golden Knights in the First Round, which will begin next week. Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:47 PM PDT ![]() North Paulding High School in Dallas, Georgia reversed the suspension of a 15-year-old student who tweeted an image of students crowding in hallways that quickly went viral, according to the student. "I was happily surprised," said Hannah Watters, adding that the school called this morning to let her family know that the suspension was dropped. The news comes just days after the high school sophomore said she was suspended for sharing a photo and video on Twitter showing students, many of whom weren't wearing masks, packed shoulder-to-shoulder in the high school's hallways. Watters said Paulding High School suspended her for using her phone without permission on school grounds, using her phone for social media during school hours and posting images of minors without their consent. Watters' mother later filed a formal letter of grievance with the school. "They disciplined me for things that everyone does at that school," she said. "The severity of it was unnecessary." In a statement to NBC's "TODAY" show, the school said they were "aware of the issues" and are "gathering the facts of the situation and will address the issue in accordance with district policies and regulations." Paulding County School District Superintendent Brian Otott also addressed the incident in an open letter after the photos started circulating, saying the photos were taken out of context while also acknowledging that "there is no question that the photo does not look good." "Under the COVID-19 protocols we have adopted, class changes that look like this may happen, especially at a high school with more than 2,000 students," Otott wrote in the letter, noting that the situation complies with the Georgia Department of Education's guidelines recommending schools "limit the congregation of students during transitions to the 'extent practicable.'" Otott wrote that the school would work to further limit crowding while noting that "students are in this hallway environment for just a brief period as they move to their next class." Critics on social media lambasted the images and questioned the school's coronavirus safety measures. "I had my trust in North Paulding that I was going to be provided with safe learning, and this was not anywhere near as safe as I thought it would be," Watters said, adding that the school should be held accountable. Watters captioned a photo in a tweet with, "Day two at North Paulding High School. It is just as bad. We were stopped because it was jammed. We are close enough to the point where I got pushed. ... This is not ok. Not to mention the 10% mask rate." She also posted a video of many students who were not socially distanced during a "split dismissal." The Paulding County School district started the fall semester on Monday and offered digital and in-person classes. However, students are not required to wear face masks at school; it is only encouraged. North Paulding High School Principal Gabe Carmona did not immediately respond to NBC News' requests for comment. Watters said schools are responsible for taking care of students, faculty and custodians, and added that she would feel a lot safer if masks were required. "They are putting so many lives at danger, not to mention the lives of kids," she said. "It's not that I want them to shut back down immediately, I want precautions."
