Sachem Schools: Required meetings for 'Re-Entry Plans' already held, but will schedule one more - OnTownMedia.com & OnSachem.com

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Today, the Sachem Central School District said it already held the state-required number of community meetings about the COVID-19 pandemic "Re-Entry Plans" for September. However, the district announced today it will add one more meeting for a date yet to be scheduled.

When New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Aug. 7 that schools in the state were eligible to reopen upon approval of local plans, Cuomo said each school district must have 3-5 discussion sessions with parents, guardians, and the community by Friday, Aug. 21.

Today, the district said it met the requirement.

"We thank the many members of our community that joined us for our three forums (held on Aug. 12 [both AM and PM] as well as on the evening of Aug. 17) to discuss our reopening procedures, protocols and to hear answers to the many questions our residents have posed," Sachem Schools posted on the district's Facebook page. "As part of our efforts on reopening schools, the Sachem Central School District has worked diligently to engage our stakeholders in conversations about the district’s plans for September."

Sachem Schools held a "Community Forum" to answer questions about the"Final Re-Entry Plans" on Aug. 17. The session is available on the district’s YouTube channel.

OnSachem has requested more information from the district about the two meetings held on Aug. 12. There was an evening Board of Education meeting during which the district announced the "Final Re-Entry Plans." However, while the meeting allowed public comments, there are no responses to those comments. OnSachem asked the district today—and is awaiting a response—if the Board of Education meeting met the governor's directive for community dialogue. OnSachem has also asked for details about the morning meeting.

While Sachem Schools today said it met the required number of meetings, the district reportedly said otherwise just one day ago. Yesterday, as Sachem Patch reported, "Sachem Schools say there will be no more online community meetings to address parent questions regarding school reopening. The district has held just one such meeting."

The governor said this dialogue is essential. On Aug. 10, Cuomo said, "The main arbiter here of whether a school district has an intelligent plan to reopen and whether people have confidence in that district's plan: It's going to be the parents and it's going to be the teachers, and that requires discussion, and that's going to be a dialogue. Parents don't have to send their child. The parents are responsible for the health and safety of the child, and they're not going to send the child if they don't believe the plan makes sense. A teacher is not going to come back into the classroom if they think the classroom is not safe, and that's right. The school district has to have that dialogue by the 21st to fully comply with our rules."

Today, Sachem said planning is underway for another meeting, with the following announcement: "As the 2020-2021 school year will not only bring changes to our school practices but also to the Sachem leadership team, I am writing to inform you that the district is in the process of planning a fourth community forum. This meeting will be livestreamed via our YouTube channel and will include a presentation from our new Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Christopher Pellettieri. As many of you [may] know, Dr. Pellettieri was appointed to serve as the next superintendent of Sachem this past Tuesday and he will officially join our district on Sept. 1. It is our hope that this additional meeting will provide our residents the chance to hear directly from our new superintendent, further understand our reopening plan and enable Dr. Pellettieri to address questions on reopening through his educational and philosophical lens."
