A photo contest being launched by Scenic Michigan this fall is asking people to enter their best Michigan beauty shots in a variety of categories, from stunning night sky views to the landscape of your favorite outdoor trail.

The Scenic Michigan Photo Contest allows you to submit your digital photo entries from Friday, Sept. 18 through Oct. 16. For a link to the contest, and to see the rules, details and how to submit your photos, click here.

Last year’s Scenic Michigan contest drew nearly 2,000 entries from around the state, from the lenses of amateurs as well as professional photographers. “I think we were able to showcase some of the really treasured areas across the state, as well as the hidden gems," said Erica Briggs, executive director of Scenic Michigan, an Ann-Arbor based affiliate of the national nonprofit Scenic America.

All those photos are likely even closer to people’s hearts this year. While the pandemic halted travel for many people across Michigan earlier this year, this summer saw an uptick in people traveling close to home and enjoying the outdoors in parks and on trails they may have overlooked before.

“What we’ve seen is that when we are stressed, when we are going through difficult times, what we turn to is nature and to beauty,” Briggs said. “Beauty is not political. People have been falling back on the beauty across our state as a way to bring themselves peace and some calm.”

The Scenic Michigan group works to protect and enhance the natural beauty of the state by focusing on behind-the-scenes on issues like combating billboard blight, supporting dark sky initiatives and advocating for thoughtful lighting controls at the local level.

The photo contest allows people to highlight those outdoor spaces that are special to them. The contest has the following photo categories:

Scenic Roadways, Byways and Trails (RBT) This category is intended to capture pictures of scenic views along and from Michigan’s highways, byways, roads, and trails.

Scenic Landscapes (SL) This broad category focuses on scenic landscapes and views. Rural or urban views are accepted.

Scenic Water (SW) This category is intended to capture scenic views of Michigan’s lakes, rivers and waterfalls.

Scenic Night Sky (SN) This category is intended to capture views of our dark night skies and celestial views.

Scenic Challenges (CH) This category is intended to capture visual pollution (e.g. signs, lighting, utility wires, bad zoning practices, etc.) that mar the beauty of one of the above categories

All pictures must be taken in Michigan, and each photographer can submit up to 10 entries via Scenic Michigan’s website.

A panel of judges will select a winning photo from each category, and an overall Best in Show winner.

The winners will be announced by Nov. 16.
