The Pac-12 announced its return this week after initially postponing the 2020 football season this fall. The decision comes after other Power 5 schools kicked off their slate of games over the last few weeks.
The Pac-12 return now puts them back in the College Football Playoffs discussion. The conference will have a seven-game slate for each team.
Games are expected to begin on November 6 with the Pac-12 championship game slated for December 18. This will allow a Pac-12 school to be considered for the postseason crown this season.
On Saturday’s College GameDay, ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit praised Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott for getting the season back on track.
“I think often, Larry Scott is like a piƱata out in the Pac-12,” Herbstreit said. “I think he deserves a lot of credit. They were dealing with a completely different set of circumstances from the other conferences. Now, you’re sitting there and looking at seven games. You guys were all right -- it’s going to be more subjective than ever and it won’t be apples-to-apples as far as scheduling. The committee is going to have the toughest job they’ve ever had in choosing four teams if we are able to play this season and have games.”
With the Pac-12 playing just seven games, it will be on the College Football Playoffs committee to decide the four best teams in the nation. This leads to more discussions on whether a possible undefeated Pac-12 team will have enough time to be considered.
Herbstreit believes that the Pac-12 should get a fair shot. He believes that the Pac-12 has a similar route as the Big Ten this season.
“But, for argument’s sake: If you get to seven games in the Pac-12 and let’s say Oregon or USC is winning and looking really good while doing it, then they’re going to have a case,” Herbstreit said. “Who’s to say they shouldn’t have a case if there’s a team that as a champion that is 7-0 and looks good -- what’s the difference between them and taking them as realistic as an option vs. a Big Ten team? … It’s going to be a very small margin, but I don’t think we should dismiss them before we even get started.”
The Pac-12 has powerhouses in the Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans. There are also teams like the Washington Huskies and potentially the Arizona State Sun Devils that can make a run with a solid season.
The chance to get into the College Football Playoffs is an important step on Scott’s agenda this season. He said during the Pac-12 webinar that the committee could have a challenge determining the final four teams.
“It’s going to be a challenge for the committee this year,” Scott said. “They’re going to have more subjectivity than they’ve ever had in terms of different schools with a different number of games, player availability, other different conditions to contend with.”
As things continue to play out this season, it will be interesting to watch how closely the CFP committee views the unprecedented 2020 season.
