| A viral march across the planet, tracked by a map in motion - CNBCTV18 Posted: 28 Sep 2020 07:47 PM PDT  On a Thursday night in early January, the disease that would become known as COVID-19 claimed its first victim, a 61-year-old man who succumbed to the newly identified coronavirus in the city of Wuhan, in the Peoples Republic of China. Nine months later, the pandemic took its millionth life. And while the vagaries of record-keeping mean we may never know who that victim was, the fact remains: COVID has killed a million people. Tens of millions of things undone. Daughters and sons unborn, works of genius uncreated. Pieces of communities excised. Entire residential complexes filled with older people ravaged. Human contribution melted away, with no way of ever knowing or chronicling what was lost. Accounting for what's missing when people die is never an easy task; now it is one multiplied by an entire million. A new Associated Press interactive map of the coronavirus spread represented by the lives it has claimed blends data and geography in a way that forces us to see what has happened to the world. And what is still happening to it. Like so many things in the world, it started small. At first, the map shows only one splash of color: China, the place where the coronavirus silently began its march. As it began to move around, the map evolved. Month by month, week by week, day by day, the coronavirus spread. Pandemic was declared. Hospitals girded. Cities and countries, shut down. The world changed so fast that its people could barely keep up. How did something so contained at first, so localized, upend the routines and activities of huge chunks of human civilization? We all have watched it, lived through it, but the visual is striking. From a world largely unsullied by the virus to one merely touched by it to an entire planet feeling its effects. Choose a place to pause. Each juncture offers a window into that moment. March 18, 2020. China still leads the world in deaths. In the United States, President Donald Trump has just declared a state of emergency. The United States has lost 191 people. The wide belief among Americans: This can still be contained. April 6, 2020. Italy is being ravaged; 16,523 have been lost. China has dropped out of the top five when it comes to deaths. The United States is second by now at 14,199 dead. May 22, 2020. The United States has shot ahead of the rest of the world and sits on the cusp of 100,000 dead 99,166. It, like the United Kingdom (35,440), Italy (32,616), Spain (28626) and France (28,292), is rendered in a darker forest green, along with Brazil. The march is accelerating. July 26, 2020. In the heart of the summer, the United States remains the country with the most dead: 147,656. Brazil, whose president has just tested positive for coronavirus, is second at 87,004. Darker greens are starting to fill the map, including in India. In China, blamed by Trump for the virus in terms some deem racist, the hue is light after strict and protracted containment measures. Sept. 27, 2020. This past Sunday. India is third in the world with 95,542 deaths. The United States, still No. 1 and criticized for its haphazard efforts at containment, has just passed the 200,000 mark. Brazil sits at 141,741, with no apparent detrimental political effect on its leader. Russia is now darker green. Africa, Australia and much of Asia are lighter, though swaths of Southeast Asia are showing higher death rates. This map tells the story of an invisible virus that upended the world. It tells of first responses and fear and decisions good and bad. Stories of valiant women and men who tried to stop it, and were sometimes claimed by their efforts. It tells stories of leaders who measured up and leaders who didnt. And how simple human touch ended up killing. Most of all, it tells of the 1 million dead and gone. These are the stories of the human beings who, had they been able to stick around, might have done things wed all remember or might have done things just as important that only a few people they loved would remember. While their rivals falter, Liverpool just keep striding on. After Manchester City's slip and Chelsea's stumble, while Manchester United battle with themselves and Tottenham plough on in their loveless marriage, Jurgen Klopp's men are very much back into the swing of things. Unstoppable? They look it, even three games into the season. Arsenal were the latest to feel the Reds' heat. The Gunners may be an altogether more organised, pragmatic outfit under Mikel Arteta, but they had no answer to Liverpool's relentless intensity. No supporters, but Anfield remains a fortress; the most difficult place to play in the world. If last week's win at Stamford Bridge was a message to the rest of the division, this was even more emphatic a statement. This was a great team flexing its muscles, going through its full repertoire at a time when the world is searching – or perhaps hoping – for signs of weakness. "We don't make statements," Klopp insisted afterwards, "we just try to win football matches." They did not even need their shiny new superstar for this one. Thiago Alcantara was not involved, and could be absent until after the international break according to Klopp with what the club describe as "a minor injury". Without the Spain international, Liverpool were as cohesive and as driven as ever. And in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, they had the game's key figures. The Reds' full-backs combined for what turned out to be the decisive goal. Pep Lijnders, Liverpool's assistant manager, would have been purring as Alexander-Arnold's cross from the right found Robertson, ghosting in at the back post to take a touch and prod past Bernd Leno. Full-back to full-back, Lijnders says, is "the dream goal" for this team. "I loved it," said Klopp. In truth, it is hard to keep calling these two full-backs. They are so much more than that to Liverpool. Creative hubs, providers of endless width and precision, bundles of boundless energy, from first whistle to last. They press and they run and they cross and they supply, week in and week out. Robertson has either scored or assisted in seven of his last eight Premier League appearances, scoring twice and providing five assists. Since his Liverpool debut in August 27, he has been involved in more goals than any other defender with 33. Second on the list, of course, is Alexander-Arnold. They are some duo, the Englishman and the Scotsman. You can try, but you will not keep both of them quiet. And when both of them shine, Liverpool sparkle. Robertson had gifted Arsenal the lead in the first half, his miskick allowing Alexandre Lacazette to bounce one past Alisson Becker against the run of play. A rare aberration; he was otherwise as solid as a rock, whether against Willian and Hector Bellerin, or later Nicolas Pepe, whose impact off the bench was minimal. Arteta's side had beaten Liverpool in each of their last two meetings, but their advantage here lasted only three minutes, with Sadio Mane on hand to tap home after great work from the lively Mohamed Salah down the right.
 Alexander-Arnold had already served notice of his threat, creating an opening for Virgil van Dijk early on, when he was given time to lift his head and deliver once more. Robertson, on the blind side of the Arsenal defence, did the rest with admirable composure for 2-1. Liverpool were behind on 25 minutes, ahead on 34, their response a testament to their powers of recovery, concentration and fitness. They could and should have extended that advantage, dominating pretty much the entire game, but were indebted to Alisson for a big save from Lacazette in the second half, when for once Arsenal were able to play through the press. On came substitute Diogo Jota to wrap up the points, the £45 million man firing home clinically on his home debut after Arsenal failed to clear a cross from guess who, Alexander-Arnold, from the right. Jota, lively, classy and clearly a workaholic, looks the ideal fit for Klopp's side. Nine points from nine, then, for Liverpool. Did you think they would lose their hunger, the desire, after climbing the mountain last year? No chance. Not this team, not with this manager. They're scared of nobody - not even Roy Keane. The fire burns as brightly at Anfield as it ever did, and with Robertson and Alexander-Arnold in this kind of form, it will be hard to put out. Mikel Arteta praised Arsenal's improvement in the second-half of their 3-1 defeat by Liverpool on Monday night - but rued a crucial miss by Alexandre Lacazette to level the match at 2-2. The Gunners were dominated by the Premier League champions in the first-half but took a shock lead through Lacazette, who finished off a superb team move by finishing past Alisson. Liverpool ran out deserved winners thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and substitute Diogo Jota - though Arteta pointed out Lacazette's saved one-on-one just before the Reds' third goal was a crucial moment in the match.  Alex Lacazette missed a crucial one-on-one in Arsenal's 3-1 defeat by Liverpool on Monday  With Arsenal losing 2-1 at the time, Mikel Arteta (above) described the miss as a major moment Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Arteta said: 'In the second half we corrected a few things, we were much better. 'We had some problems still with the ball and we had the best chance in the game and when it comes to Anfield you're not going to get 10 chances. 'When you get through one against one against the keeper, you have to score if you want to get something out of the game.'  Lacazette (far left) had earlier given Arsenal a shock lead in the first-half at Anfield  Lacazette was visibly upset after his second-half miss when he was substituted late on Sky pundit Roy Keane also critiqued Lacazette's poor second-half finish and described it as a major moment in the game for Arsenal. The French striker was played through on goal thanks to an incisive ball from substitute Dani Ceballos but Alisson stood tall and managed to pull off the save. Keane said: 'He could have taken it through, had a better touch. He should have put the ball into the back of the net, get into good habits. 'They are huge opportunities that you have to take. It was the middle of the goal.  Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane also admitted Lacazette needed to score that crucial chance 'We have to credit the goalkeeper for standing up but you don't get many of those opportunities against Liverpool and you have to take them.' While Arteta noticed the improvements from his side after the half-time break, the Spanish coach was also full of praise for Jurgen Klopp's side and described how well the project under the German coach has worked for them. He added: 'It's a tough place to come for anybody in the world. They (Liverpool) set incredible standards, they dominate every aspect of the game. | vPro対応のスリムタワー型パソコンNEC「Mate J タイプME」 - PC Watch Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:13 PM PDT desimpul.blogspot.com  NECは8月に、第10世代Coreを搭載するスリムタワー型デスクトップパソコン「Mate J タイプME(ME-7)」を発表した。今回はこちらのモデルの試用レポートをお届けしたい。 スリムタワー型の筐体にCore i7-10700を搭載「Mate J タイプME」の搭載可能なプロセッサは、Celeron やPentium Gold、そしてCore i3/i5/i7。メモリは4GBから32GB。ストレージは、HDD 500GB/1TB、SSD 128GB/256GB/512GB、HDD 500GB/1TB+Optaneメモリー。HDD 2台のRAID 1構成も可能になっている。 今回手元に届いたのはCore i7-10700(vPro対応)搭載の最上位だ。メモリ16GB、HDD 500GB×2(RAID 1)、Radeon 520などを搭載。なお、ベーシックモデルでは、メモリ4GB、HDD 500GB、内蔵GPUといった構成だ。
プロセッサは第10世代Comet LakeのCore i7-10700。8コア16スレッド、クロックは2.9GHzから最大4.8GHz。キャッシュは16MB、TDPは65W。デスクトップ用としてそこそこ強力なモデルだ。チップセットはvPro対応のIntel Q470。メモリはスロットが4つあり、今回は8GB×2の計16GB。ストレージはHDD 500GB×2でRAID 1を構成。DVDスーパーマルチドライブも搭載している。OSはWindows 10 Pro。 グラフィックス機能はプロセッサ内蔵のUHD Graphics 630と、ディスクリートGPUとしてオプションのRadeon 520(ビデオメモリ2GB)を追加したかたちだ。出力は前者がHDMI、後者がDisplayPort×2。Radeon 520は2017年に出荷され、同時期登場のGeForce MX130より少し性能が劣る程度となるだろうか。最近のCPU内蔵GPUと性能的には大差なく、マルチディスプレイ化がおもな用途だと思われる。 ネットワーク機能はGigabit Ethernet、Wi-Fi 6、Bluetooth。そのほかのインターフェイスは、前面にUSB 3.1×2、USB 3.0×3(1基はType-C)、音声入出力。背面にUSB 3.0×4、シリアルポート(RS-232C D-sub9ピン)、パラレルポート、音声出力。シリアルポートは標準、パラレルポートはオプションとなる。この2つを搭載しているパソコンはほぼ絶滅しているが、業務用途などで必要とする人はいるのだろう。 サイズは89×298×340mm(幅×奥行き×高さ)で、重量は約4.8kg。税別価格は今回の構成で220,400円となる。いささか高いがvPro対応ということもあり、企業向け価格だ。 筐体はホワイトと濃いブルーの2色からなるデザインだ。サイズ89×298×340mm(幅×奥行き×高さ)、重量約4.8kgで、それなりにコンパクト。机の上に縦置きでも横置きでも設置できる。 正面は左側のスリットにDVDスーパーマルチドライブ。右側に電源ボタン、音声入出力、USB Type-C、Type-A×4。背面は音声出力、HDMI、シリアルポート、Type-A×4、Gigabit Ethernet。DisplayPort×2。Wi-Fi用アンテナコネクタ、パラレルポート、電源コネクタを配置。縦置き/横置のとき、裏に相当する部分にゴム足が4つある。 ネジ2本を外すと簡単に内部にアクセス可能だ。写真からもわかるように、けっこうギッシリしている。電源は310W/80PLUS Platinum。ここはさすがに企業向けと言ったところ。メモリスロットが光学ドライブの下にあったりとメンテナンスはしづらいが、基本的にあとからカスタマイズを行なわないビジネス用らしい仕様だ。 振動と発熱は許容範囲だが、ノイズはCINEBENCHなど負荷をかけるとファンの音が結構うるさい。マシンの特性的に卓上に設置することが多く、耳の位置が近いため、気になる人は気になるだろう。とはいえ、オフィスワークでそこまでCPUに負荷がかかることはまれのはずだ。 今回は同時に24型ディスプレイ「LCDE241N-CD3」も届いたので簡単に動作確認だけ行なった。以下の写真にあるように上左右が狭額縁だ。入力はDisplayPort、HDMI、ミニD-Sub15ピンの3系統と音声入力。側面にヘッドフォン出力もある。スピーカーを内蔵しており、音質はそれなりだが、HDMIやDisplayPortの信号に乗っている音も出力できる。画面を縦位置に回転させるピボットにも対応する。   高性能プロセッサを搭載。カスタマイズではSSDを選びたい初回起動時、スタート画面(タブレットモード)はフルHDで1画面。NECグループがプリインストールアプリ群となる。デスクトップはWindows標準だ。 さて動作であるが、メインドライブがHDDのため、今日のSSD搭載機と比べると格段に遅い。注文時のカスタマイズでは128/256/512GBのSSDも用意されているので、とくに理由がないかぎりそちらを選んだほうがストレスを感じないだろう。 HDDはSeagate製の「ST500LM34」で、容量500GB、回転数7,200rpmの製品だ。これを2台使ってRAID 1を構成している。約464GBが割り当てられ、空き容量は416GBだった。 DVDスーパーマルチドライブは「HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GUE1N」。Gigabit Ethernet、Wi-Fi、BluetoothはすべてIntel製だ。先に書いたように内蔵GPUのHDMIとディスクリートGPUのDisplaPortを使ってマルチディスプレイ化も可能だ。  おもなインストール済みアプリは、「AMD Radeon Settings Lite」、「CyberLink Power2Go 8」、「Intel Optane Memory and Storage Management」、「PC設定ツール」、「ウイルスバスタークラウド」(インストーラ)、「型番・製造番号表示ユーティリティ」など。PC設定ツールは本機の場合ECOモードのみとなっている。   ベンチマークテストは、PCMark 10、PCMark 8、3DMark、CINEBENCH R20、CrystalDiskMarkを使用した。なおPCMark 8のCreative Accelarated 3.0は途中でエラーで落ち完走しなかった。 Core i7-10700の性能が活きる処理は速いが、HDDが足を引っ張る格好になっている。参考までに現在筆者のメインマシンになっているIntel「NUC10i5FNH」(Core i5-10210U、メモリ32GB、SSD 500GB)のスコアを併記するので参考にしてほしい。プロセッサ依存の部分は本機が速く、ストレージ依存の部分は遅く、GPUは大差なしになっているのがわかるだろう。

Jurgen Klopp and Roy Keane were dramatically at loggerheads on Sky Sports after Liverpool's victory over Arsenal with the Reds boss bemused at believing he heard the word 'sloppy' used to describe his team's display. Goals from Sadio Mane, Andrew Robertson and Diogo Jota sealed all three points for the hosts at Anfield after Alexandre Lacazette's early strike, as Klopp's side maintained their 100 per cent win-record this season. But upon starting his post-match interview on Monday Night Football, the German questioned as to whether he was correct in hearing Keane moments earlier stating Liverpool's performance was 'sloppy' - and the former Manchester United captain later clarified he said the Reds had 'sloppy moments' in what was a tense exchange.  Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was left stunned at the beginning of his post-match interview  Klopp believed he heard Roy Keane used the word 'sloppy' to describe his side's performance When asked by presenter David Jones what was good about the match, Klopp responded with: 'Everything. Did I hear right that Mr Keane said we had a sloppy performance tonight? Did he say that?' Keane reacted sharply, saying: 'I thought they gave up one or two opportunities which they'll be disappointed with.' A still confused Klopp then said: 'I'm not sure if I heard it right, maybe he's talking about another game. It cannot be this game, sorry. 'That's an incredible description of this game. It was absolutely exceptional. Nothing was sloppy, absolutely nothing...' Yet Keane did not back down and attempted to clarify his comments: 'I think you might have misheard me, I've said there were sloppy moments but I think you've been outstanding. I've been giving the club nothing but praise. I'm not sure you heard me correctly there.' After the interview was finished, Keane then quipped: 'Very sensitive, isn't he? Jesus - imagine if they'd lost!' 'They're capable of winning games when they're not at their best and that's the sign of a good team.'  Klopp admitted in a later press conference that he had misunderstood Keane's comments In a later press conference, Klopp clarified his position with a conciliatory explanation: 'I came to the microphone and didn't see them talking. I only heard them in a speaker and I heard sloppy. I misunderstood so no problem – it is all fine. I didn't see us being sloppy in defending. 'I was not harsh. I came to the mic and I didn't see them talking, I only heard them through the speaker and I heard "sloppy" something, and in this moment I misunderstood it obviously. 'No problem. I just asked "did he say?" and obviously he didn't say so it's all fine.' Klopp was clearly extremely happy with his side's performance on Monday night, as they leapfrogged neighbours Everton at the top-end of the Premier League table.
