German authorities have decided to reinstate the entry ban for travellers arriving from Georgia and Tunisia as the two countries have been listed again as coronavirus high-risk areas, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
The decision has entered into force on October 9, 2020, at 12:00 am.
According to a press release issued by Germany’s Ministry of Interior, people travelling from Georgia and Tunisia will not be allowed to enter Germany unless their journey is absolutely necessary.
Upon the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which is the public health institute in Germany, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently updated its list of high-risk Coronavirus territories, adding several countries and regions. The countries which have been added to the list include:
- Belgium
- Estonia
- France
- Ireland
- Iceland
- Lithuania
- Romania
- Slovenia
- Hungary
- United Kingdom
The Robert Koch Institute declares countries as risk-zones based on joint analysis in cooperation with the Foreign Office, Building and Home Affairs, as well as the Ministries of Health and Interior.
Germany’s decision to add more countries in the list of high-risk zones came due to worsening COVID-19 situation in certain countries, whereas Germany itself also continues to record a high number of coronavirus cases.
According to Robert Koch Institute, over 4,000 COVID-19 cases have been registered in Germany in one day.
Persons seeking to enter Germany from territories where there is an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases should be tested for Coronavirus upon their arrival and are obliged to respect the quarantine measure until the results are known.
In March 2020, Germany had imposed entry restrictions on several countries to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. However, on July 2, 2020, the country decided to lift entry restrictions for the residents of 11 third-states, taking into consideration the improvement in the epidemiological situation in those countries.
Back then, Germany opened borders with Georgia and Tunisia which were also included in the list of epidemiologically safe countries since June. Moreover, borders were opened with the following countries as well:
- Australia
- Canada
- China *
- Japan *
- Montenegro
- New Zealand
- South Korea *
- Thailand
- Uruguay
*Regarding China, Japan and South Korea, borders will reopen under the condition of reciprocity.
