School district to discuss school re-entry plan - Sonoma Index-Tribune

There’s more than unlocking doors to reopening schools for students, and plans for how to repopulate classrooms is among the subjects the Sonoma Valley school board will be discussing at its meeting Tuesday night.

The agenda for the meeting, set to begin at 5 p.m., includes a “COVID Reentry Recommendation” and a “Preschool Reopening Plan.” The two are interconnected and not an indication that the district has been given permission by Sonoma County or state health officials to reopen. Preschools that operate on district sites can only reopen when district campuses are allowed.

The district is required to have a separate public hearing on the preschool plan, said Bruce Abbott, associate superintendent of Sonoma Valley Unified School District, because preschools are regulated differently than school districts.

District officials agreed in the summer that because the pandemic situation was fluid, and they wanted to create some consistency for students, teachers and staff, they decided to revisit the discussion of reopening in the fall at the Oct. 20 board meeting.

The proposed plan calls for a gradual four-phase re-entry beginning with special education students on an individual basis and specific cohorts of students in all grades. That may happen sometime in November and would be on a voluntary basis for students and teachers.

Additional phase-ins of students and teachers returning would take place over several weeks, starting no sooner than mid-January in a hybrid manner with full re-entry possibly in the spring.

Conditions other than the county’s color-coded tier status include labor union partnership, testing and tracing, increased custodial work, ability to supply PPE, safe transportation planning, and teachers shifting gears again to plan and prepare for a new way of teaching.

The regular board meeting begins at 5 p.m. and can be viewed on Zoom.SVUSD.org or sonomatv.org.

Trustees will also hear an update report about bond measure expenditures, projects and timelines.
