| Mobile medical team provides La Crosse's homeless with critical care - News8000.com - WKBT Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:44 PM PST  St Claire Health Mission program gets to the root of homelessnessLA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- A group of La Crosse health care workers is leaving the clinic to do more work. The team of doctors and nurses is hitting the streets to provide basic health care and help solve the housing crisis. There's no exam table or fancy equipment. Dr. Sarah Brown doesn't even need a room. The La Crosse M.D. treats her patients with compassion. Brown, and a small team from St Claire Health mission, are making medicine mobile. The team provides free care in parks and shelter or any place they need to, to reach the homeless. "Our homeless aren't living on the streets, our homeless are surviving on the street and just barely.", explains nurse Sandy Brekke. Finding patients is sadly the easy part. La Crosse's homeless numbers are rising. In late November, Brekke says 23 families stayed at the city's emergency shelter. A record that breaks Doctor Brown's heart. "It's staggering to come to grips with the fact there are so many children who are homeless." The cost of medical care is also up, making this team's mobile work even more valuable. Many of their patients qualify for free health insurance. St. Claire Health Mission connects them with access to routine care, mental health, and addiction services, lowering the need for expensive, emergency care and possibly emergency housing. "It's a lack of treatment that has led to homelessness often times. If we can step back and find the root of the cause, can we as healthcare workers be part of the solution to homelessness.", says Brekke. For this team, care takes place outside clinic walls. Good medicine that could help patients to find a home of their own. The St. Claire Health mission has been providing mobile medicine since the end of summer. The program is funded through donations. | Nigerian wonderkid Adeyemi breaks Salzburg Champions League record - Goal.com Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:42 PM PST  Nigerian wonderkid Karim Adeyemi broke a Champions League record for Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday, when he netted in their 3-1 victory at Lokomotiv Moscow. Adeyemi added Salzburg's third in the 81st minute away at the RZD Arena, finally killing off the contest after Anton Miranchuk had pulled one back for Lokomotiv two minutes beforehand following a first-half double from the visitors' Mergim Berisha. In finding the net, Adeyemi becomes—at the age of 18 years and 318 days—the youngest player ever to score in the Champions League for RB Salzburg. His goal capped off an excellent outing for the Austrian champions, as they finally ended a run of five UCL games without a victory—losing four and drawing one match during that spell. Surprisingly, their goalscoring has been impressive even if they haven't been able to pick up victories, with only Bayern Munich scoring more goals per game across the last two UCL campaigns out of the clubs to feature in both editions of the tournament. While the impressive Berisha will hog the headlines, the goal was a landmark moment for Adeyemi who is continuing to rebuild his career after leaving Bayern Munich amidst a cloud after disciplinary issues overshadowed his immense potential. He was an Austrian champion with the club last season, and has one league goal in six T-Mobile Bundesliga outings so far this season. | Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:08 PM PST  Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 will be in 5G devices in the first quarter of 2021. QualcommThe chip that will power most high-end 5G phones next year is here: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. And for the first time in its ultra high-end lineup, Qualcomm has integrated its 5G modem on the same chip as the brains, AI and other processor features, likely giving 5G phones a boost in battery life. Smartphones need a lot of components to operate, but two key parts that make a phone a phone are the application processor that acts as the brains of a device and a modem that connects it to a mobile network. The first 5G devices needed standalone modems that worked alongside the main computing processor. That was because 5G technology was so new, it was too difficult to combine it with the brains. Last year's Snapdragon 865 also had a standalone modem, while Qualcomm integrated 5G connectivity with the processor system on its midrange Snapdragon 765 and 765G systems on a chip, or SoCs. Many people expected Qualcomm's highest-end chip to be the first Snapdragon SoC to have an integrated modem, but the company at the time said if it didn't pare back the modem or the app processor features, the resulting chip would be too big and too power hungry for high-end smartphones. Qualcomm chose not to compromise on either feature for its high-end phones but was willing to make some compromises for its midrange chip lineup. The Snapdragon 865 paired with the X55 modem to power the majority of high-end 5G phones released in 2020, starting with Samsung's Galaxy S20 lineup. With the Snapdragon 888, Qualcomm gets back to its SoC strengths, and phone users will benefit. The biggest advantages of SoCs are better battery life and lower cost. Instead of two chips taking up room in a phone, there's just one, resulting in thinner, sleeker phones or more room for bigger batteries. Having an integrated chip also enables device makers to quickly develop phones for essentially any 5G network in the world, and it makes 5G handsets cheaper for consumers. "It gives you everything you need in a single package and theoretically makes phone design easier, cheaper and just better integrated," Technalysis Research analyst Bob O'Donnell said. The continued advance of 5G is more critical than ever now that the coronavirus has radically changed our world. People are stuck at home and are maintaining their distance from each other, forcing them to rely on home broadband service -- something 5G could amp up. The next-generation cellular technology, which boasts anywhere from 10 to 100 times the speed of 4G and rapid-fire responsiveness, could improve everything from simple video conferencing to telemedicine and advanced augmented and virtual reality. Gaming is one area that's expected to benefit from 5G's responsiveness and fast speeds. Qualcomm is hosting a two-day virtual Tech Summit in lieu of its annual in-person event in Hawaii. Instead of releasing a flood of new chips and news, the company is keeping its digital event focused on the Snapdragon 888's capabilities. Wednesday will feature technical deep dives into features like Snapdragon 888's camera. 5G's improvementsThe world may be grappling with a widespread pandemic, but that's sure not slowing down 5G's rollout. The super-fast technology reached more customers this year than expected and will cover about 60% of the global population by 2026, according to report from Ericsson on Monday. That makes 5G the fastest deployed mobile network ever, the Swedish networking giant said. By the end of this year, there will be 218 million 5G subscriptions around the world, up from Ericsson's forecast in June for 190 million -- which itself was an increase from an earlier estimate. A lot of those people are using phones powered by Qualcomm's processors. Even the new iPhone 12 lineup, which uses Apple's own application processor, relies on Qualcomm modems to connect to 5G networks. For Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888, the focus is on four areas: 5G, artificial intelligence, gaming and camera, Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm senior vice president and general manager of mobile, compute and infrastructure, said in an interview ahead of Tuesday's news. "It really rounds off all of the use cases and capabilities that this device has," Katouzian said. "We concentrated on really core technologies for low power compute as well as communications." The integrated modem is Qualcomm's X60, which is capable of downloading data at up to 7.5 Gbps and uploading information as fast as 3 Gbps. The modem, unveiled in February, taps into super-fast but unreliable millimeter-wave airwaves favored by Verizon and the slower and steadier sub-6 spectrum preferred by virtually all other carriers in the world. It supports many features that allow for faster speeds and other network benefits. "On the 5G side, the communication capabilities are going to become much better," Katouzian said. While the peak download speed isn't much faster than the previous generation, the X60 aims to boost the average speed on devices by aggregating different types of wireless signals. The X60 has the ability to aggregate the slower sub-6 networks with the faster mmWave spectrum, boosting overall performance. The X60 also increases network capacity and expands coverage. Networks operators will be able to double sub-6 peak speeds in standalone mode (that's where the phone goes straight to 5G instead of today's non-standalone networks, where 4G works as the anchor to make the initial handshake between a phone and a network before passing the device along to a 5G connection). T-Mobile is one carrier that will benefit from carrier aggregation. Users of the earliest T-Mobile 5G phones haven't seen speeds much faster than 4G connectivity. But when T-Mobile can combine its different airwaves, users should see faster download and upload rates. The modem in 5G phones this year, the X55, couldn't aggregate that spectrum together. "The X60 is really the first modem that does all the 5G stuff you really need," Technalysis' O'Donnell said. Qualcomm "now really has a modem that can be leveraged more successfully to get the best possible 5G speeds." And AI, gaming and cameraWhen it comes to artificial intelligence, the Snapdragon 888 includes Qualcomm's new, sixth-generation AI Engine. Qualcomm re-engineered its Hexagon processor, which it said provides a "pivotal leap forward in AI" when compared with the previous technology. It improves performance and power efficiency and crunches data at 26 tera operations per second, or TOPS. Qualcomm also included its second-generation Sensing Hub, which includes lower-power, always-on AI processing. AI "underpins so many different applications that [are] very widely used today," including in photography and videography, Katouzian said. It "really just takes [out] all of the headaches that were there before in terms of choosing the right parameters, putting it in the right mode, making sure the lighting is correct, even recognizing scenes and faces and backgrounds and depth. All of those things are taken care of through AI capabilities." And the Snapdragon 888 features a faster Spectra image signal processor that lets users capture photos at videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second. That equates to about 120 photos in one second at 12MP resolution, which is up to 35% faster than the previous generation. "That's huge," Katouzian said. "When this capability comes out, people will start to [develop] different applications and services associated with it." That could include things such as ultra-sharp video conferencing or giving users the ability to capture photos of what they're doing throughout the day and share those on social media with others, he said.  Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm senior vice president and general manager, mobile, compute and infrastructure, talks up some of the companies that will be using the new Snapdragon 888 processor. QualcommThe camera will allow for better low-light and night photos and for action shots of something moving very quickly -- or very slowly. Combining AI and the camera, the phone will automatically know which setting to select for each circumstance, and users won't have to "worry about the technical details, Katouzian said. The processor also has Qualcomm's third-generation Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology that boosts the video effects on mobile devices. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 888 is expected to power most high-end Android phones next year. Companies that plan to use the Snapdragon 888 in devices include Asus, Black Shark, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, Oppo, Sharp, Vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE. "I'm glad that our new flagship smartphone Mi11 will be the one of the first devices with Snapdragon 888," Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said in a press release. "This is another cutting-edge product from us and will be loaded with various hardcore technologies." Qualcomm didn't specifically name Samsung, but it's likely the next Galaxy S handsets will include the Snapdragon 888 when they launch early next year. The first phone to have last year's Snapdragon 865 was the Galaxy S20. DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. - Residents in Delaware County have been flocking to a mobile drive-thru coronavirus site. John Brittingham, of Wallingford, says he was exposed to someone with COVID-19 right before Thanksgiving, so he's taking advantage of a new mobile drive-thru testing lab in the parking lot of the Springfield Mall. It's called "15 to Know" and the results are texted to you in 15 minutes. "Just want to make sure I'm in the clear. Just so I don't give it to anyone else, so hopefully in 14 minutes we'll find out," he said. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, there were hours-long waits just about everywhere and delayed results. "15 to Go" has six local testing sites. In addition to the 15-minute rapid antigen testing for $75, it also offers a more reliable rapid PCR test for $99 with results promised overnight. However, that didn't happen for many before Thanksgiving. Advertisement When FOX 29's Dawn Timmeney called Tuesday night, she received the following message, "Due to the overwhelming demand for COVID testing around the Thanksgiving holiday, if you received a PCR test from "15 to Know" on Monday, November 23rd, approximately one-third of the results are still pending ." One Facebook post reads, "They are well-intentioned, but they were not prepared for the surge they got understandable." At the top of its website, there's an alert from the company saying it is doing its best to get PCR test results back in 72 hours, but it may go longer. Dave Fox didn't want to wait five to seven days for the results of a free test. He had no problems at the "15 to Know" drive-thru in Springfield. "I figured I'd wait here because if I'm okay I might go and do some shopping get some stuff I need," he said. FastLabs provides the service for you if you need that coronavirus test within 15 minutes, but it comes at a price. It's an example of private enterprise answering a need in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Doctor Raul Cruz of FastLabs says, "This lab is a modern mobile medical diagnostic facility and laboratory. What makes it different is it is mobile. According to the company, FastLabs will move their mobile unit to public events, to local businesses, to locations convenient for public access and you can get your results in minutes. "A lot of the testing you see in the community, have long lines, two-three days to get results. We can get it to you within minutes or hours," says Cruz. But how does it work? MORE FROM CBSMIAMI.COM You go online to FastLabs patient portal at fastlabsmed.com, you have to make an appointment. You show up in your car at the mobile unit's location and get your test. The test is then processed inside the mobile lab. Results in minutes for most tests but the convenience costs. The rapid antibody test will cost $75 and you get results in minutes. Rapid antigen is $135 and the test that detects the presence/symptoms of coronavirus $150, with results within a day. "We have all the capabilities of all the labs that you will find in the community, except we are able to move this wherever," adds Cruz. The key for potential patients is the company website. It is there where you can schedule your appointment. FastLabs representatives say they will be putting a fleet of "MD RVs" into service in Florida. They are prepared to go to schools, businesses, public events where they can test groups of a hundred or more. At this point, FastLabs does not accept insurance but will provide a bill that people can submit to their insurance company for reimbursement. | Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:08 PM PST  The case is the latest legal twist in the waning days of President Donald Trump's administration after several of his top advisers have been convicted of federal criminal charges and as the possibility rises of Trump giving pardons to those who've been loyal to him. The disclosure is in 20 pages of partially redacted documents made public by the DC District Court on Tuesday afternoon. The records show Chief Judge Beryl Howell's review in August of a request from prosecutors to access documents obtained in a search as part of a bribery-for-pardon investigation. The filings don't reveal a timeline of the alleged scheme, or any names of people potentially involved, except that communications between people including at least one lawyer were seized from an office that was raided sometime before the end of this summer. No one appears to have been publicly charged with a related crime to date. At the end of this summer, a filter team, used to make sure prosecutors don't receive tainted evidence that should have been kept from them because it was privileged, had more than 50 digital devices including iPhones, iPads, laptops, thumb drives and computer drives after investigators raided the unidentified offices. Prosecutors told the court they wanted permission to the filter team's holdings. The prosecutors believed the devices revealed emails that showed allegedly criminal activity, including a "secret lobbying scheme" and a bribery conspiracy that offered "a substantial political contribution in exchange for a presidential pardon or reprieve of sentence" for a convicted defendant whose name is redacted, according to the redacted documents. Communications between attorneys and clients are typically privileged and kept from prosecutors as they build their cases, but in this situation, Howell allowed the prosecutors access. Attorney-client communications are not protected as privileged under the law when there is discussion of a crime, among other exceptions. "The political strategy to obtain a presidential pardon was 'parallel' to and distinct from [redacted]'s role as an attorney-advocate for [redacted name]," Howell wrote in her court order. The grand jury investigation also appears to relate to unnamed people acting as unregistered "lobbyists to senior White House officials" as they sought to secure a pardon and use an intermediary to send a bribe, the unsealed court records say. Prosecutors hadn't provided evidence to the judge, however, of any direct payment, and instead showed evidence that a person was seeking clemency because of past and future political contributions. The investigators indicated in court that they intended to "confront" three people with the communications and complete their investigation. Over the last week, the Justice Department told Howell it wanted to keep filings related to the matter confidential in court, because "individuals and conduct" hadn't yet been charged. | Activist investors take over Artis REIT board - Winnipeg Free Press Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:51 AM PST Activist investors take over Artis REIT board - Winnipeg Free Press The management and board of Artis Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) has succumbed to pressure from Vancouver-based activist investors, Sandpiper Group, and agreed to step down. After two months of pressure from Sandpiper, which owns about five per cent of the Artis units, five members of the Artis board have agreed to resign.  Samir Manji, the CEO of Sandpiper Group, called Artis's plan flawed in an October interview. As well, Armin Martens, the founding CEO of the company, has agreed to retire effective at the end of the year. Chief financial officer Jim Green will also step down after the 2021 annual meeting. The agreement comes after Sandpiper launched the proxy battle at the beginning of October. Among other things, it objected to Artis's plan to spin out its retail properties into a separate REIT. In an interview with the Free Press in early October, Sandpiper CEO, Samir Manji, said Artis's plan was flawed on many levels. He said if such a plan was to be approved by unitholders it would leave unitholders saddled with "an orphaned, illiquid, out-of-favour asset class." Sandpiper also took issue with the fact that Artis used Marwest, a company owned by the Martens family, for construction and property management services. Sandpiper said it was aware of extensive transactions with Marwest that have not been disclosed. While Martens and Artis previously discounted the Sandpiper concerns, there has clearly been a change of heart. In a press release on Monday morning, Martens said, "I am pleased that Artis was able to reach an agreement with Sandpiper that Artis believes is in the best interests of the REIT and all of its unitholders. Having served as Artis's founding CEO for 16 years, I feel this is an appropriate time for leadership renewal and succession." Martens was not available to talk to reporters on Monday. In addition to the management resignations, four board members have agreed to resign effective immediately — Armin Martens, Edward Warkentin, Wayne Townsend and Bruce Jack. Victor Thielmann resigned his board seat at the end of October. Artis has agreed to fill those positions with Sandpiper's five nominated trustees — Heather-Anne Irwin, Manji, Mike Shaikh, Aida Tammer and Lis Wigmore. Artis, like many REITs, is in a period of uncertainty as the COVID-19 lockdown has sparked concerns about future occupancy as well as current rent payments. The company was once very heavily into Calgary office space, but has divested most of those holdings. Some believe its unit price has been unfairly penalized for the perception that it is still too heavily weighted in the depressed Alberta marketplace. Sandpiper has said it would come up with a new strategy in the first 100 days of control of the board. Brian Hayward, a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, the former CEO of Agricore United and author of a just-released book called The Great Chair: A Window on Effective Board Leadership, said that if activists are demanding a new strategy for a company — which is the case in the Sandpiper/Artis proxy war — then they would be be looking to replace the CEO. "If the activists are saying, 'We don't like your strategy,' and the strategy is Martens' then he is likely not the guy to change it," Hayward said. "It probably makes sense for him to leave gracefully. The new board will put a new strategy in place, whatever it is, but Martens would not be the guy to do it. It is anathema to him." Early on, Jetport Inc., the estate of Tim Hortons founder Ron Joyce and the owner of a 13.3 per cent stake in Artis units, said it would vote its shares in support of Sandpiper's actions. Manji had said it had been gaining support from other unitholders as well. It is not yet clear what different direction Artis will now take. In a prepared statement released Monday, Manji said, "We are pleased to reach an agreement with the board of Artis that we believe will benefit all unitholders.
