Londoner, 91, gives hilarious responses after getting Covid-19 vaccine - My London

Posted: 08 Dec 2020 10:08 PM PST

A 91-year-old Londoner was among the first people to get the Pfizer Covid vaccine, and his interview was both inspiring and hysterical.

Martin Kenyon was found outside Guy's Hospital and interviewed by CNN about getting the vaccine, on the very first day it became available (Tuesday December 8).

And while the injection itself sounded uneventful, it was his tales of his experiences throughout the day that had people cracking up.

For more news and features about London directly to your inbox sign up to our newsletter here.

When Martin woke up on the morning the mass vaccinations began, he didn't even have an appointment. He simply rang up Guy's Hospital and said he would like to be vaccinated.

He told CNN he had to answer some questions about "this and that", adding it was "nothing very interesting", before being asked to go to the hospital and get the jab at 12.30pm.

Simple as that...or so Martin thought. And this is when it gets funny.

Martin's journey to get the vaccine wasn't all swings and roundabouts

The 91-year-old said: "Of course I couldn't damn well find anywhere to park my car so I was late."

Classic London problems.

When Martin finally found a place to park and arrived at the hospital, they put him on a list to schedule his time to get the coronavirus vaccine.

And while some may have been more pre-occupied with getting the hugely anticipated vaccine, and being one of the first in the world to get it, other events in Martin's day seemed more important to discuss.

The Londoner hilariously said: "I went off and had a rather nasty lunch.

"And then came back and they were ready for me."

Say it how it is, Martin, say it how it is.

Martin's frankness in the interview has already gained him many new fans.

"That man is fantastic," one social media user said, "He also doesn't look a day over 80."

"Love this guy! He's so lovely," another added.

One person Tweeted: "I like him being less than satisfied with that lunch...and saying so. He's going to make 100 easy."

The 91-year-old also casually but kindly corrected the interviewer several times.

When asked whether the procedure was like having any other vaccine, Martin said: "Well, vaccines aren't very common are they, one has inoculations."

Smart and sassy.

Those with vaccine fears may be pleased to hear that "it didn't hurt at all" according to the Londoner.

"I didn't know the needle had gone in until it had come out," he added.

When asked how it felt to be one of the first people in the country to have had the Covid-19 vaccine, Martin rightly interrupted and said "in the world" before laughing.

He added: "I don't think I feel about it at all, except that I hope that I'm not going to have the bl**dy bug now!

"I don't intend to have it because I've got granddaughters and I want to live a long time to enjoy their lives."

We have too much love for this guy.

What do you think about the new Covid-19 vaccine? Let us know in the comments below.

Martin has still got to go and get his follow up dose in 21 days, and wait seven to 10 days after according to NHS guidance. But he is determined to hug his granddaughters as a late Christmas present.

Not that they would know, as he hadn't even had time to tell his daughter and son-in-law that he had just been given the jab.

"I'm getting home and I'll tell them now," he said to the interviewer.

"Nobody knows, you're the first to know."

Martin's most iconic statement had to come at the end of the interview, when asked about his hopeful immunity in January.

The 91-year-old said: "Well, there's no point in dying now when I've lived this long, is there?

"I don't plan to anyway."

Aubameyang fined $10,000 for 'undermining' the image of African football - Goal.com

Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:42 PM PST

The African football governing body has sanctioned the Arsenal star following his action before their Afcon qualification clash versus Gambia

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been fined ten thousand US Dollars ($10,000) by the Confederation of African Football for publishing "offensive and degrading material" that "dents image of the African football ruling body".

The punishment was meted out to the Arsenal star for slamming Caf after being made to feel like a "hostage", having been forced to sleep in an airport alongside his teammates ahead the Group D Africa Cup of Nations qualifier versus Gambia.

"Mr. Pierre Emerick Emiliano Francois Aubameyang has publicly published offensive and degrading material that undermines the honour and image of the Confederation of African Football," a statement from Caf read.

"In terms of the Caf Statutes & Regulations, in terms of Articles 10, 11, 43.1, 46, 82 of the Disciplinary Code, the Caf disciplinary board decided to impose a fine of 10,000 USD for breach of the values of sportsmanship and integrity on the Gabonese Football Federation for the regrettable behaviour of the player."

Patrice Neveu's Gabon were billed to play the West African country in Bakau on Monday, but they arrived at the Banjul International Airport late on Sunday night.

Upon their arrival, the Panthers were delayed at the airport with reports indicating their passports were seized despite providing their coronavirus results to the immigration officers for checks.

Owing to their exasperating ordeal, the 31-year-old who was named African Player of the Year in 2015 took to Instagram in the early hours of Monday to post videos and photographs initially of his team-mates lounging around having had their passports taken from them by security.

As the hours passed, the photos started to show the majority of the squad attempting to sleep on the floor of the airport, using their luggage as pillows.

Having arrived at 23:30 local time, Aubameyang began to show his frustration after waiting for three hours, posting a video at 02:31 that was accompanied by a caption that read: "Still waiting to enter Gambia, and we play at 4 pm. Nice."

Neveu's side lost the game 2-1 courtesy of goals from Modou Barrow and Musa Barrow at the Independence Stadium.

On a positive side, the Gabonese skipper can challenge this decision before Caf's appeal board within the next three days.

Beware of Covid vaccine scams. Here's how to make sure you get a real one - CNBC

Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:08 PM PST

"I can't produce enough for the masses," Johnny T. Stine wrote on Facebook in May, "but in 18 months, when the virus is long gone, everyone will have access to the vaccine that I have now."

Stine, founder of North Coast Biologics in Seattle, said he'd already given a Covid vaccine to 12 people in the city he lived, and was off to Alaska to immunize more. He explained that he's "not here to save the world" but that he's making his product available to those "who may be at a greater risk."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission on May 21 sent Stine a warning letter, saying it was unlawful to advertise that a product can prevent a disease unless you can prove it with scientific evidence.

Clearly, Stine couldn't do so.

The letter stated that Stine was advertising "unapproved and misbranded products related to Covid-19."

It went on to state: "The FDA is taking urgent measures to protect consumers from certain products that, without licensure, approval, or authorization by FDA, claim to mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure Covid-19 in people ... you have offered a product for sale that is intended to mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure Covid-19 in people. We request that you take immediate action to cease the sale of such unlicensed, unapproved, and unauthorized products for the mitigation, prevention, treatment, diagnosis, or cure of Covid-19."

It wasn't until this fall that ModernaPfizer and AstraZeneca announced that their Covid vaccines were up to 90% (or more) effective in clinical trials. The news provided hope after an especially dark year.

However, the preventative treatments could still be months away for many people. A recent report found that President Donald Trump turned down a deal with Pfizer months ago for additional rounds of the vaccine, meaning many Americans may have to watch those in other countries get the immunization before they do.

In the meantime, scammers like Stine are preying on people's desperation to protect themselves from a virus has that has already sickened more than 15 million Americans and left over 200,000 dead.

(Stine did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

"Obviously, in the context of Covid, demand for vaccines will far outweigh initial supply, and we can anticipate that bad actors will rush to fill that gap," said Karen Gardner, chief marketing officer at SIPCA North America, a global security company.

One factor making matters worse is that legitimate companies and government officials typically have more time to roll out treatments and implement safeguards against fraud than they do during the pandemic, Gardner said.

"Given the urgency of distributing Covid-19 vaccine and the speed with which vaccines are being moved to market, it appears likely that – at least in the initial round of vaccine production and delivery – some vaccines may not incorporate all available security features to prevent fraud," she said.

People who fall for these false advertisements face grave consequences. Such phony products, which haven't been subjected to rigorous testing or clinical trials, could make you ill.

"There is also enormous risk that those individuals – thinking they are effectively vaccinated – will interact with other, non-vaccinated individuals and lead to the continued spread of this deadly virus," Gardner said.

If someone tells you it's available right now, that's a scam.
Caitlin Donovan
a spokeswoman for the Patient Advocate Foundation

Any vaccine you get should only be through a licensed medical professional, experts say. Most public health departments will publish a list of approved Covid vaccine providers, Gardner said.

Caitlin Donovan, a spokeswoman for the Patient Advocate Foundation, a nonprofit that helps patients access and pay for health care, recommends people try to get the vaccine through their primary doctor.

"Ask if there's a waiting list you can sign up for, and if there's a plan for how it's distributed," Donovan said.

Keep in mind that most people aren't going to get a vaccine in the U.S. until the summer, she said.

"If someone tells you it's available right now, that's a scam," Donovan said.

Covid-19 vaccine latest: Document shows when the average healthy person in Ireland will get jab - Irish Mirror

Posted: 08 Dec 2020 06:08 PM PST

Cabinet this morning signed off on a Covid-19 vaccine strategy that will likely decide when people across the country receive the jab.

The plan separates people into what the Government is calling "Vaccine Allocation Groups" – and puts adults over 65 in long-term care facilities first in the queue for the vaccine.

The Government is stressing that the groupings are only provisional for now, and will "evolve and adapt with more detailed information on the vaccines and their effectiveness."

Nevertheless, what we've got this morning is a blueprint for the distribution of a vaccine that could rescue normality from the clutches of a deadly virus.

Here's a full breakdown of the different groups, and where they come in the vaccine pecking order:

Pictured at the HSE National Cold Chain Centre is the first consignment of nine ultra-low temperature freezers, ready for the arrival of Covid-19 vaccines requiring storage at -70 degrees

1. Adults over 65 in long-term care facilities

As expected, those in care and nursing homes – aged over 65 – will be prioritised when vaccine distribution time arrives. The reason, the Government says, is that they're at the "greatest risk of severe illness and death."

2. Frontline healthcare workers in direct contact with patients

Next in the queue are our frontline healthcare workers – at least those who interact with patients or who risk exposure to bodily fluids or aerosols. Figures released by the Government show that in the first wave, over 30% of cases were among healthcare workers.

3. Adults aged 70 or over

Adults aged over 70 will be vaccinated next, and grouped in the following order:

  • 80 to 84-year-olds
  • 75 to 79-year-olds
  • 70 to 74-year-olds
Video Loading

4. Other healthcare workers not in direct contact with patients

Healthcare workers – even those not in direct contact with patients – will be next in line for the jab. This, the Government says, is because they provide "essential health services" and "protect patients."

5. Adults aged 65 to 69

The Government says adults aged 65 to 69 are at "higher risk of hospitalisation and death" as a result of Covid-19. .

6. Key workers

The definition of a key worker isn't straightforward, but what we've got for now is those who are deemed to provide "services essential to societal and economic activity."

The Government admits more detail is needed on who exactly falls into this category.

Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine is set to be the first rolled out to supply

7. Vulnerable adults aged 18 to 64 with medical conditions

Those who have illnesses that "put them at high risk of severe disease" are next. The rationale? They're at higher risk of hospitalisation if they catch the virus.

8. Residents of long-term care facilities aged 18 to 64

Another vulnerable grouping that will be vaccinated as a bloc, adults below 64 in care facilities represent a "high risk of transmission" in the eyes of the State.

9. Adults between 18 and 64 living in crowded accommodation

Those in disadvantaged socioeconomic groups – "where self-isolation and social distancing is difficult to maintain" – will be next. It's not specified, but this seems like it could include those living in Direct Provision centres.

10. Key workers in essential jobs who can't avoid a high risk of exposure

There's more specificity when it comes to this group – the Government means workers in the food supply system, public and commercial transport and other vital services. These people are at a higher risk because they can't work without social distancing.

11. Those who are essential to education

Primary and secondary teachers, special needs assistants, childcare workers, maintenance workers, school bus drivers and probably more fit into this category, as the Government continues to prioritise keeping schools open full time.

12. Adults aged 55 to 64

The reason this group has been put next is because they're at risk of hospitalisation.

13. People in third-level institutes, entertainment and goods-producing industries

The next grouping is adults whose jobs are important to the functioning of society, but who are able to work while following protective measures.

14. Adults aged 18 to 54 who haven't already got the vaccine

If you're an adult between the ages of 18 and 54, and you don't into any of the categories listed above, you'll get the virus in the 14th stage of its roll-out.

A sample of the BNT162b2 vaccine

The Government is waiting for more evidence, but it says that if vaccines turn out to prevent transmission, then those aged 18 to 34 should be prioritised because they have more social contacts – which could lead to higher transmission.

15. Children, teenagers up to 18 and pregnant women

Last but not least come children, and pregnant women. The rationale around pregnant women seems to be that they should only take it if there's minimal risk, while children and teenagers are known to be less at risk than any other group.

Bill Gates says six Covid vaccines could be available by spring 2021 - CNBC

Posted: 08 Dec 2020 06:08 PM PST

SINGAPORE — Bill Gates has predicted there could be as many as half a dozen Covid-19 vaccines approved and ready for distribution by the spring of 2021, as medical advancements to combat the coronavirus ramp up.

"I expect that we'll have about six vaccines approved by the first quarter," Gates said Tuesday, speaking virtually at the Singapore FinTech Festival.

In addition to the already selectively approved Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Gates said candidates from Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Novavax would also likely be granted authorization over the coming months. He did not name a sixth vaccine source.

Rapid vaccine developments

Last week, the U.K. became the first country to give the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine emergency use approval, with rollouts scheduled to begin Tuesday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is set to vote on its approval Thursday.

Gates — whose eponymous non-profit organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has long advocated for global health developments including vaccinations — congratulated regulators in developed nations on their speedy progress.

We need to make sure we (distribute) in a somewhat equitable way ... not how rich you are determines whether you get access.
Bill Gates
founder, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

"The Western regulators are doing a great job," he said. "They've run these phase three trials in an incredibly professional way, looking for any side effects, looking at efficacy."

Yet Gates noted that much work remains to be done, including by organizations like his own, to ensure vaccines are fairly distributed to all countries, especially less developed ones.

Ensuring equitable distribution

"We need to make sure we (distribute) in a somewhat equitable way, that's not how rich you are determines whether you get access to this vaccine," said Gates.

Already, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is working with India's Serum Institute, the world's largest vaccine producer by volume, to begin manufacturing and distributing AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine candidate nationally. A similar arrangement will be made with Serum for the Novavax vaccine, Gates said, while a separate manufacturer will be found for Johnson & Johnson's candidate, once approved.

All three candidates rely on traditional vaccine technology, meaning they can be developed and stored at relatively lower cost and with lesser difficulty than their counterparts from Pfizer and Moderna. That makes them more suitable options for distribution among less wealthy nations.

"The goal is to get these things out as much as possible in 2021, so even in developing countries, the pandemic is over by some time in 2022," said Gates.

OL - livedoor

In a landmark moment for American soccer, two US teammates featured in today's UEFA Champions League match between Serie A's Juventus and La Liga side Barcelona: Sergio Dest lined up as right back for Barca, while midfielder Weston McKennie featured for Juve.

And just days after his first Serie A goal, former FC Dallas academy product McKennie blasted a flying volley past goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen to put his club up 2-0 after just 20 minutes of play. It was the American's first UCL goal since Oct. 3, 2018, and one of the most memorable moments ever for an American in Europe's top competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the other two for Juventus in the form of penalty kicks in the 13th and 52nd minutes for a 3-0 win over Lionel Messi and company. The game was a head-to-head match for the top spot in Group G, with Juventus going on to the knockout phase as group winners.

Oxford Covid-19 vaccine’s trial results in Lancet: ‘Safe, protects against disease’ - The Indian Express

The Oxford Covid-19 vaccine has been found to be safe, with only three out of 23,745 participants over a median of 3.4 months experiencing serious adverse events that were possibly related to a vaccine.

All three participants have recovered or are recovering, and remain in the trial, Prof Andrew Pollard from the University of Oxford, who is the lead author of the study, said while addressing a virtual media conference following the publication of the interim results of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine trials in The Lancet on Tuesday.

The results are the first full peer-reviewed efficacy results to be published for a Covid-19 vaccine. According to the results, the vaccine protects against symptomatic disease in 70 per cent of cases, with vaccine efficacy of 62 per cent for those given two full doses, and of 90 per cent in those given a half, and then a full dose .

The Oxford vaccine uses a chimpanzee adenovirus viral vector that can't cause disease in humans and expresses the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This means the vaccine delivers the spike protein genetic code into vaccinated people's cells, which then produce the protein, teaching the immune system to recognise and attack the virus.

Out of 23,745 participants, 168 experienced a total of 175 severe adverse events over the period, but 172 events were unrelated to the Covid-19 or control vaccines, said Prof Pollard. Those are events that investigators considered medically significant and ranged from a broken leg to a heart attack, he said.

One event was in the control group (a case of haemolytic anaemia), one event was in the Covid-19 vaccine group (a case of transverse myelitis considered possibly related to the vaccine), and a case of severe fever was reported in South Africa in a participant who recovered rapidly without an alternative diagnosis and was not hospitalised. All three participants have recovered or are recovering, and continue to be part of the trial, study authors have said in The Lancet.

Data was analysed from 23,745 adults in the UK, Brazil and South Africa (11,730, 10,002, and 2,013 in the three countries, respectively). The interim analysis pools the data, providing greater precision for efficacy and safety outcomes than possible in individual trials and giving a broader understanding of the use of the vaccine in different populations, said Prof Pollard.

The primary outcome of the study was to determine how many cases of symptomatic Covid-19 disease there were in participants who had received two doses of the vaccine (with the first dose being either low or standard dose, and the second one being standard dose), compared with controls. Only cases that occurred 14 days after the second vaccination had been given were included (11,636 participants in the UK and Brazil trials).

There were 131 cases of symptomatic Covid-19 disease more than 14 days after the second vaccine dose in these 11,636 people. This included 0.5 per cent cases in the vaccine group and 1.7 cent cases in the control group, which equates to a vaccine efficacy of 70 per cent. Cases of severe disease and hospitalisation were monitored for in all 23,745 participants. From 21 days after the first dose, there were 10 cases hospitalised for Covid-19, all in the control arm, and two were classified as severe, including one death. These are also secondary outcomes and will require additional confirmation, said study co-author Professor Sarah Gilbert from University of Oxford.

"Despite global spread of Covid-19, a large proportion of the population in many countries have not been infected and are not immune. Vaccines may play an important role in increasing immunity, preventing severe disease, and reducing the health crisis, so the possibility that more than one efficacious vaccine may be approved for use in the near future is encouraging. Here, we have shown for the first time that an adenoviral vectored vaccine – a type of vaccine technology which has been in use since 2009 – is efficacious and could contribute to disease control in the Covid-19 pandemic," she said.

Writing in a linked Comment in The Lancet, Dr Maria Deloria Knoll and Dr Chizoba Wonodi, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA (who were not involved in the study), say, "Oxford–AstraZeneca's US$2–3 per dose agreement with the COVAX facility holds good promise for equitable access for low and middle-income countries, compared with the high cost of the two mRNA vaccines that have also reported more than 90 per cent efficacy."

"Despite the outstanding questions and challenges in delivering these vaccines, it is hard not to be excited about these findings and now the existence of three safe and efficacious Covid-19 vaccines, with 57 more in clinical trials. With a range of manufacturers, a very large global investment in production and cooperation in procurement and distribution, it seems likely that 2021 will see Covid-19 vaccines made available to all countries in the world. Perhaps by this time next year, we can celebrate the global control of SARS-CoV-2, in person," they said.
