Gary Trent Jr. will not sign a contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers ahead of the 2020-21 NBA season, and instead will play out his minimum contract and enter restricted free agency next summer, the guard said Thursday.
"Right now I'm focused on heading into the season, so right now I'm not really worried about [my contract]," said Trent Jr. when asked if he was pursuing a contract extension. "Going into the season. Going into a great start and everything gonna take care of itself."

As a second-round pick, the 21-year old guard was eligible to sign an extension worth up to four years, $53.76 million but it sounds like he will instead become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the season, assuming Portland extends a $2,122,822 qualifying offer to him.
By holding his restricted rights, Portland can match any offer sheet Trent Jr. signs and can go over the cap due to holding his bird rights, as well.
The former second-round pick will make $1,663,861 this upcoming season.
After barely playing as a rookie, Trent Jr. moved up the rotation as the season went on and even closed many games inside the NBA bubble, where he shot a scorching 48% from three-point range across all games.
In total, Trent Jr. averaged 8.9 points on 41.8% from behind the arc in 21.8 minutes per game. In the eight seeding games, however, Trent Jr. averaged 16.9 points per game on 50.7% from three-point range in 34.1 minutes per game while being the team's best perimeter defender.
During the offseason, Trent Jr. hired Rich Paul to be his new agent as a part of Kultch Sports.
