- VW plans ID.1 and ID.2 subcompact electric models.
- Polo-sized ID electric hatch is seen as entry-level car.
- Two smaller EV models would likely join lineup after 2023.
The VW ID.4 will be the first of Volkswagen's new electric sub-brand's vehicles to land stateside, but it's by no means the only one scheduled to receive a wide release. Volkswagen began sales of the smaller ID.3 hatchback, about the size of the VW Golf, weeks prior to the start of ID.4 production in Europe, but it's not likely to be the smallest ID model for long, Autocar reports.
Wolfsburg is currently working on a Polo-sized electric car that would start at about $24,000, and would sit on an smaller version of the MEB platform dubbed MEB-Lite, Autocar has learned. Such a model could feature a battery capacity of up to 45-kWh.
Does this sound like something the U.S. could use?
With the upcoming debut of the ID.4 and the sales of ID.3 taking place in Europe, perhaps it's obvious that at some point we would see an ID.1 and ID.2.
Speaking with Volkswagen passenger cars CEO Ralf Brandstätter, Autocar has learned that the Wolfsburg-based automaker intends to produce a supermini and a compact hatchback with these two names, mirroring gasoline-engined versions of the Polo and the T-Cross. Such models would stretch in price from about $23,900 to $29,800, prior to the application of any government EV incentives. These models could go into production starting in 2023, but not sooner, as VW has a lot on its plate at the moment with the ID models that it has already committed to.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the U.S. would see the ID.1 and ID.2 models at all, because VW hasn't even made plans to bring the Golf-sized ID.3 hatch to the states, even though we have a feeling we'll see it eventually. A Polo-sized model with a smaller battery, on the other hand, would certainly be a new segment entry, because VW hasn't even offered the Polo in the U.S. and Canada. So a European-sized supermini could be a tough sell in Wolfsburg's view, especially given the fact that most new EV launches over the next few seem to be SUVs or crossovers of various sizes.
But a hatchback with a price of about $24,000 before incentives has already been tipped as the segment that Tesla wants to enter next, so VW is certainly not alone in looking at entry-level EVs.
