Predicted 5-Year Cost to Own: $39,069
Compared to Segment Average: -$13,201
The year 2021 marks four straight years of low-cost-to-own dominance for the Acura ILX. With a starting price right around $26,000 and the low maintenance costs associated with Japanese brands, the 2021 Acura ILX bests the 5-year cost-to-own numbers of European competitors like the pricier Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3 by a country mile. Even its Pacific Rim rivals the Lexus IS and Genesis G70 pale to the ILX when it comes to 5-year ownership cost.
With a tidy business plan of offering one front-wheel-drive drivetrain — a 201-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission — and an interior that breathes comfort and convenience, the ILX brings its best game to the entry-level luxury market. It lands impressive city/highway mpg figures of 24/34. In addition, the ILX offers heated front sport seats and dual-zone climate control, with 8-way power seat adjustability and lumbar support for the driver. Thanks to this combination, the ILX holds its own in the luxury leagues.
Premium Quality and Safety
“Not only is the 2021 Acura ILX compact luxury sedan a gateway into the premium world of Acura ownership, but it might also serve as an introduction to luxury motoring in general,” is how our Expert Review put it. “It’s one of the least expensive brand-new luxury cars on sale in the United States. Yet it can still compete with sophisticated European rivals like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3. The ILX is a completely convincing premium vehicle with a comfortable cabin full of many luxury and safety features.”
High-performance acceleration, however, is not on the 2021 ILX’s long list of attributes. That’s a bonus for entry-level luxury, however. The ILX will hold its own in a handling duel, and stops with style as well.
From a safety standpoint, the 2021 Acura ILX competes as well. Its standard AcuraWatch includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. Our recommendation, however, is that you spend the extra $2,000 for the ILX Premium Package. The Premium Package ILX still starts at a bargain price. It will get you blind-spot monitoring, leather upholstery, premium audio, and a ton of other goodies (including, sigh, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — which should be standard by now).
