IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa guard CJ Fredrick will be entering the transfer portal, multiple sources told HN Sunday night. He's started for the Hawkeyes when healthy during his two seasons with the program.
Entering his name into the system does not mean the former Kentucky high school Gatorade Player of the Year will be leaving Iowa. He could explore his options and choose to stay.
That move is rare, however. Most student-athletes entering into the portal have designs on finding a new home and that appears to be the case with Fredrick.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native and former Covington (KY) Catholic High standout started 27 games in 2020-21 but missed four full games and three second halves of other contests after Jan. 17 due to planter fasciitis. He ranked fourth on the team in points per game (7.5) and 3-pointers made (36). His 47.4 percent shooting from 3-point range was the second best percentage by a sophomore in Iowa history.
Fredrick (6-3, 195) was named to the Big Ten All-Freshmen team in '19-20 despite missed six full games and two second halves because of injuries. He was one of only three players nationally — and only player from a major conference dating back to 1993 — with 65+ assists, 32 or fewer turnovers, and shoot 46 percent or better from 3-point range in his first season of college competition.
Iowa could head into its next campaign with four new starters. All-time leading scorer, Luka Garza, is off to the pros, fellow all-Big Ten performer Joe Wieskamp is navigating the NBA Draft process and the program's all-time leading three-point shooter and assist man, Jordan Bohannon, is weighing whether or not to return for a sixth year. The first starter, Connor McCaffery, is having a pair of offseason surgeries on his hips.
Hawkeye coach Fran McCaffery said last week that Fredrick hadn't practiced since the season ended on March 22. He was resting his foot due to the planter fasciitis. He was expected back at Iowa workouts this week, McCaffery said on Wednesday.
There is speculation that Fredrick could be heading to Kentucky with reports on that possibility being out there for more than a month. His friend and former Iowa teammate, Jack Nunge, is heading to Xavier in his hometown of Cincinnati.
