Riverside County to enter orange coronavirus tier Wednesday - Press-Enterprise

Riverside County will enter the less-restrictive orange tier of the state’s coronavirus reopening framework Wednesday, April 7, a move that will remove limits on how many customers retail stores can serve inside and allow restaurants to open at 50% capacity, county spokeswoman Brooke Federico said Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, state officials said most California schools and businesses should be able to fully re-open June 15, assuming there’s no spike in cases and COVID-19 hospitalizations between now and then.

Riverside County was able to enter the orange tier after its COVID-19 case rate dropped to 3.5 new cases per day per 100,000 residents, down from 4.1 last week.

The positivity rate for the whole county dropped to 2.0% from 2.3% last week, and in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, the positivity rate is now 2.3%, down from 2.4%.

San Bernardino County also will enter the orange tier Wednesday.

“We continue to make real progress with combating COVID-19 and the impacts on our businesses and communities,” Riverside County Supervisor Karen Spiegel said in a news release.

“Cases have been steadily declining, vaccine supply is improved, and today the state announced ending the tier system June 15. These are extremely positive signs that Riverside County continues to move forward and recover.”

On Monday, the county announced that vaccine appointments would be opened up to residents 16 and older starting today. Appointments had been limited to those 50 and older and workers in certain occupations.

The next tier for Riverside County is yellow. In order to advance to the yellow tier, the county must stay in the orange tier for at least three weeks and meet yellow tier metrics for at least two of those weeks.

Orange tier status means, among other things, that bowling alleys can reopen at 25% capacity and bars that don’t serve food can serve customers outside.

The move to orange comes three weeks after Riverside County entered the red tier of California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, a four-tier system that relaxes or tightens coronavirus restrictions based on a county’s new COVID-19 case rate and other metrics.

Moving into the orange tier could reduce the reliance of bars, tasting rooms and tap rooms on mobile food trucks.

“Typically they’re not the easiest to book in Riverside County,” said Jim Breyers, co-owner of Skyland Ale Works in Corona.

Skyland doesn’t have a kitchen, and not being required to have a food truck on hand might allow Skyland to expand its hours, he said in a phone interview.

He planned to reopen indoors once Riverside County moves to the orange tier.

The craft brewery has also expanded its patio space in anticipation of being able to serve more customers, adding a 22-by-45 foot pergola with misters. If California opens up on June 15, Breyers said he would be ready.
