ROCKFORD (WREX) — Rockford Police Officer Eric Thurmond intends to enter a plea agreement next month in the criminal sexual assault case against him.
On Friday, Thurmond appeared virtually in a Winnebago County court status hearing. Attorneys announced a plea agreement would be entered on Monday, Sept. 1. Details on the plea agreement were not made available during Friday's status hearing. Attorneys also said they plan to speak to the victim in the case about the agreement before it's entered.
Thurmond is accused of criminal sexual assault stemming from an incident on May 23, 2019. A woman reported to police that she was a victim of sexual assault, and an investigation revealed Thurmond as a suspect.
13 WREX obtained court documents that say the criminal sexual assault Thurmond is accused of is rape.
Thurmond was charged in October 2019, 5 months after he had been placed on administrative leave for the investigation. Since he was arrested and charged, his attorney has fought to have the case dismissed.
Thurmond was a nationally recognized member of the Rockford Police Department for his work with youth across the community. He was one of two resident police officers, or ROCK officers, who live in the neighborhoods they patrol.
Thurmond, who was a 3-year veteran of the force at the time of these accusations, is still on administrative leave.
