Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer announced Thursday he will enter the NCAA transfer portal.
Maurer, who started four games for the Volunteers in 2019, appeared to be fourth in a four-man battle for the starting job this fall. Harrison Bailey and a pair of transfers — Hendon Hooker (Virginia Tech) and Joe Milton (Michigan) — remain in competition for the No. 1 quarterback position.
Maurer announced his decision via Twitter:
Maurer, a three-star recruit in Tennessee’s 2019 signing class out of Ocala, Fla., played in 12 games in two seasons with the Volunteers. He completed 37 of 81 passes for 550 yards and two touchdowns with five interceptions.
Tennessee opens its season Sept. 2 at home vs. Bowling Green.
