Since September 16, grandparents who have their nieces and nephews in the Netherlands have been exempted from the entry ban

From 00.01 on September 16, 2021, all grandparents visiting grandchildren aged under 18 are exempt from the EU entry ban. This used to only be the case if you were visiting a newborn grandchild,” the Dutch Government notes in its list of EU entry ban and exemptions.

The same notes that grandparents travelling to meet a newborn child for the first time are still required to fill in a Declaration of exemption from the COVID-19 entry ban. The Declaration asks for information on parents’ details, like names and birthdates, as well as the address where they are currently living.

The Netherlands currently permits entry for travellers from third countries wishing to enter its territory for compelling family reasons. This includes visiting a seriously ill or terminally ill family member or attending a funeral.

As per those coming to the Netherlands to be with their legal partner (not married) when they give birth, paternity or parentage of the unborn child must be acknowledged. A confirmation from the gynaecologist or the obstetrician must be provided, showing that the third-country citizen travelling to the Netherlands under this exemption is more than 34 weeks pregnant.

These rules, however, apply only to those who have not been vaccinated against the Coronavirus yet, as those who have proof of vaccination showing that they have been fully vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or the World Health Organization (WHO), can enter the Netherlands even if they do not fall under the exempted categories.

Travellers who are vaccinated will still need the following in order to be able to enter the Netherlands:

  • The ‘Vaccine Declaration COVID-19’ form completed
  • proof of vaccination
  • return flight ticket
  • a visa

Children younger than 18 travelling with their vaccinated parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are exempt from the requirement of vaccination. Yet, they fall subject to the requirement of a negative COVID-19 test result, in this case.

Only this week, SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that the Netherlands has ceased applying quarantine requirements for vaccinated travellers arriving from very-high risk countries from September 22.

As per travellers listed under the Netherlands’ list of safe non-EU countries, they are exempt from the entry ban, regardless of their vaccination status. Part of this list are currently Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Hong Kong SAR, Jordan, Macau SAR, Moldova, Monaco, New Zealand, Qatar, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Svalbard, Taiwan, Ukraine, Uruguay, and the Vatican City.
