Border patrol agents recently discovered migrants using a "storm drain" to illegally enter the U.S. in Texas.
According to a press release from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on September 18, McAllen Border Patrol Station (MCS) agents noticed several subjects in a storm drain in Hidalgo, Texas. The agents, accompanied by officers with the Hidalgo Police Department, then set up a perimeter around the storm drain and apprehended three subjects that were seen exiting the drain.
"Approximately one hour later, three more subjects were apprehended exiting the storm drain, including one unaccompanied child. The subjects are citizens of Honduras and Mexico," the press release said.
Later that same morning, several more subjects were noticed in the same storm drain. At approximately 11 a.m. local time, four more subjects were apprehended as they exited the storm drain. They were citizens of Mexico and Honduras, according to CBP.
The discovery of migrants using the storm drain to enter the U.S. came just one day after Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents found a hotel room being used to harbor several undocumented migrants.
According to the press release, on September 17, the Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents learned of the hotel in Edinburg, Texas, and while conducting surveillance on the area, they noticed "two individuals enter the suspect room carrying several jugs of water and groceries."
"Their ongoing surveillance identified other factors indicating that the room was being used to harbor migrants," the press release said.
After conducting surveillance of the hotel room, the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office completed a welfare check of the hotel room, finding more than 10 people inside.
Ten people were citizens of Honduras, five were citizens of El Salvador and one was a citizen of Mexico.
"The illegally present migrants claimed they had been waiting to be transported further into the U.S. for nearly 30 days," the press release said.
The discovery of migrants using the storm drain to enter the U.S. comes as over 10,000 migrants, mostly from Haiti, have been seen camping out near a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after crossing over the Rio Grande river.
During a recent press conference held near the bridge, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that 600 more border patrol agents have been sent to the area to help address the influx of migrants and noted that he was concerned about Haitian migrants receiving "false information" about entering the U.S.
"We are very concerned the Haitians who are taking this irregular migration path are receiving false information that the border is open or that temporary protected status is available," Mayorkas said. "I want to make sure that it is known that this is not the way to come to the U.S. That is false information."
Newsweek reached out to CBP for further comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
