The Haitian Migrant Story Didn’t Start This Month

Visceral images out of Texas showing horse mounted border patrol agents rounding up Haitian asylum seekers crossing the Rio Grande cut through a frantic news cycle and led to the resignation of the U.S. Special Envoy to Haiti.

The Biden Administration is scrambling to find a humane solution for thousands of people who are fleeing Haiti due to natural disasters, crime, and political violence. The root causes are baked in decades of U.S. policy toward the neighboring nation.

Nicole Phillips works with the Haitian Bridge Alliance and joins us to offer context to what led up to this week's events.

The Risks People Take To Enter The US

San Diego Union-Tribune immigration reporter Kate Morrissey recently went on a hike through the Otay Mountain wilderness in a trip organized by the U.S. Border Patrol for journalists. One of the reasons for the excursion was to show part of the journey undocumented people make to enter the U.S. Morrissey’s story offers perspective on the physical risks and how those who are caught are quickly deported under a law known as Title 42, which was put in place during the COVID-19 era.

Another hit came this week with the extension of COVID-19 travel restrictions, which have devastated businesses that rely on cross-border commerce. We talk with one of those regular crossers, immigration lawyer Pedro Chavez, whose organization Fear of Return helps asylum seekers on both sides of the border.
