The fair is coming: Art Barn entry deadline is Friday; docents needed - Plumas County Newspapers

The Plumas-Sierra County Fair is returning and so is the Art Barn. The Art Barn at the Fair proudly showcases the work of artists of all ages and abilities. Plumas Arts works hard each year to coordinate the preparation and display of work in this much-visited exhibition. If you are thinking of entering work to the Art Barn, don’t delay as entry forms are due to the Fair Office at 204 Fairgrounds Road by this Friday, July 8 at 5 p.m.

Fair entry forms can be picked up at the Plumas Arts’ Gallery at 525 Main St. this week Wednesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alternately, entry forms can be downloaded at plumasarts.org/art-barn.

Animal adoption fundraiser

Also returning this year is the Animal “Adoption” fundraiser. Wooden animal “adoption” and decoration has been a huge hit in previous years, with decorated pigs and roosters. This year participants get to decorate and add their artistic style to a trout!

A limited number of plywood trout cut outs are now available at the Fairgrounds main office in Quincy for “adoption” for $10 for a larger fish and $5 for a smaller fish. This fundraiser allows Plumas Arts to better display the art and purchase needed supplies for each year. One hundred percent of the funds raised go directly to the Art Barn.

Many folks adopted fish for the 2021 fair, but due to the fire, were unable to display their adopted animal. Plumas Arts will be accepting fish that were purchased and decorated in 2021, as well as fish adopted this year.

Adoptive animals need your loving, creative attention to decorate and make uniquely yours. The fish are only to be decorated on one side, since they will be hung on the wall to make them appear to be swimming under all the amazing art displayed at the Plumas-Sierra County Fair Art Barn July 28-31.  Imagination is encouraged without limitation, except for the following:  no large increases in overall size (added height or length), no profanity or offensive material/wording/design. Remember to only decorate one side!

Suggested materials:  paint, textiles, plant material, seeds, craft materials, tiles, upcycle materials or…think of free-flowing art or a theme.

The exceptional trout art will be judged by a special group of judges not fair related. There will be prize ribbons awarded for the following categories: Most creative use of materials, Most artistic, most “trout” like, and People’s Choice.

This fundraising idea was started by long time Art Barn coordinator and stellar volunteer, Maggie Hennessey. We want to thank Maggie for all of her years of hard work for the Art Barn! Jennifer Ready, Plumas Arts Event and Art Barn Coordinator, says “I can’t wait to see the various unique and artistic trout that local people will submit”.

Be sure to head on over to the fairground’s office on fairgrounds road in Quincy to get your fish before they “swim” away. Your finished fish will need to be returned to the Art Barn on either July 21 or 22 from 3 to 7 p.m. Contact Plumas Arts with questions at 530-283-3402.

Docents needed

The monumental task of getting all the art accepted and up on the walls and docenting during the fair requires many hands and hundreds of volunteer hours to accomplish. We need your help.

Work is delivered to the fairgrounds on Thursday and Friday, July 21-22, between 3 and 7 p.m. About six volunteers in 2 to 4 hour shifts are needed during that time.

During the fair, pairs of docents work in two-hour shifts July 28th to the 31st to care for the work and help with the People’s Choice Awards voting. Art Barn Hours are Thursday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.

Any amount of time you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Every volunteer working 4 hours or more will be given a free admission pass to the fair.

To sign up to volunteer please call 283-3402 or email [email protected].

Plumas Arts was established in 1981 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, private public benefit corporation. To learn more about the work of Plumas Arts, or to lend your support as a docent at this year’s art barn, visit the website at plumasarts.org
