'Mom' star Mary Pat Gleason, prolific TV actress, dead at 70 - New York Post

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:48 PM PDT

Mary Pat Gleason, a character actress with a huge list of credits and who most recently played "Mom"'s Mary, has died. She was 70.

Per a post on Gleason's official Facebook page, she passed away after a long illness from cancer.

Though you may not have known Gleason's name, it's likely that her face is familiar: Her acting resume contains more than 100 television credits, usually for one-off-but-memorable roles on popular broadcast series in the past 40 years. She was Madame Oeuf, "Saved By the Bell"'s French teacher. She was Lucille, the stern yet kindly dressing-room attendant who hugged a grieving Miranda in "Sex and the City." She was Mrs. Butters, the no-nonsense elementary school teacher who dealt with Lynette and Susan's kids in "Desperate Housewives." She was Sally, the homeless woman who may or may not have known the president on NBC on "Will & Grace."

Her list of TV appearances also includes roles on "Quantum Leap," "Highway to Heaven," "Night Court," "Blossom, ER," "NCIS," "Bones," "Grey's Anatomy," "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," "How to Get Away With Murder and "The Blacklist."

In 2014, she started the recurring role of Mary, an Alcoholics Anonymous member, on CBS' "Mom." Gleason appeared on the comedy a number of times over the years, and her character was killed off in Season 7 when Mary died of a brain aneurysm during an AA meeting.

'Riverdale' actress speaks out: 'I'm the only black series regular but also paid the least' | TheHill - The Hill

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:48 PM PDT

"Riverdale" actress Vanessa Morgan took to social media this week to blast "how black people are portrayed in media" and said she is "the only black series regular but also paid the least" on the hit TV show.

"Tired of how black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people. Tired of us also being used as side kick non dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actially in the show. It starts with the media. I'm not being quite anymore," Morgan tweeted this week.

Morgan later responded to a fan who said that Morgan's paycheck should be doubled because she also portrays an LGBTQ character.

"Lmao too bad I'm the only black series regular but also paid the least girl i could go on for days," Morgan tweeted Tuesday.

Morgan urged fans not to "attack" her fellow cast members on the show because "they don't write the show" and "they don't call the shots & I know they have my back."

Lili Reinhart, who stars in the show alongside Morgan, tweeted Tuesday: "We love you, V. And support you 10000%."

Morgan tweeted that same day: "To my black fans, I have now made it my purpose to fight for us. To the six year old me who had no role model that looked like me on TV. This is for you. We aren't your token black non dimensional characters. This is being black in Hollywood. I will fight for YOU."

Asha Bromfield, who previously played Melody Jones on "Riverdale," one of the members of Josie and the Pussycats on the show, tweeted Tuesday: "Don't even get me started with how Riverdale treated the Pussycats. We had so much more to contribute than standing in the background and adding sass to a storyline. I stand with you @VanessaMorgan."

Morgan's tweets come as protests across the country have erupted over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed last week in police custody after a white officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes.

Trump hits back at Jim Mattis, calls him world's 'most overrated General' - Times of India

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday hit back at former Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis after he rebuked the former for his leadership as the president of the United States.
Trump also went on to call Mattis world's 'most overrated General'.
"Probably the only thing Barack Obama and I have in common is that we both had the honour of firing Jim Mattis, the world's most overrated General. I asked for his letter of resignation and felt great about," Trump tweeted.
"..His primary strength was not military, but rather personal public relations. I gave him a new life, things to do, and battles to win, but he seldom "brought home the bacon". I didn't like his "leadership" style or much else about him, and many others agree. Glad he is gone!" he added.
Trump's remark came after the former US Secretary of Defence on Wednesday criticised Trump saying that he is the "the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people".
"Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people--does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us," Mattis was quoted as saying by the CNN.
"We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society," he added.

Military leaders condemn Trump over protest response - CNN

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:08 PM PDT

In a true Washington bombshell on Wednesday evening, former Defense Secretary James Mattis, a warrior revered by his troops, told Americans they must come together without the President.
"Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people -- does not even pretend to try," said Mattis, who has kept silent since resigning in 2018.
"Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership," said the retired Marine general in a statement, criticizing Trump for threatening to deploy regular troops to quell unrest in a flagrant threat to US political stability.
The statement will come as a body blow to Trump, who although he latterly turned against his ex-defense secretary, idolizes generals and loved referring to Mattis as "Mad Dog."
It is particularly extraordinary since it appears to imply that an order by Trump for troops to deploy against protesters would be a breach of their constitutional oath. And since former top military brass remain highly loyal to their comrades and plugged into the Pentagon, one of the most political of power centers, Mattis' broadside will spark speculation as to whether he is conveying the thoughts of serving senior officers who are unable to speak out.
Trump's initial reaction was to discredit Mattis, who served in combat roles in two Iraq wars and in Afghanistan but who the President described on Twitter as "the world's most overrated General."
But, he notes, "His primary strength was not military, but rather personal public relations. I gave him a new life, things to do, and battles to win, but he seldom 'brought home the bacon'. I didn't like his 'leadership' style or much else about him, and many others agree. Glad he is gone!"
Mattis tears into Trump: 'We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership'
Also on Wednesday evening, retired Gen. John Allen, the former commander of American forces in Afghanistan, took his own turn at attacking Trump's response in a commentary published by Foreign Policy.
"It wasn't enough that peaceful protesters had just been deprived of their first-amendment rights—this photo-op sought to legitimize that abuse with a layer of religion," wrote Allen.
He was referring to the order given to federal security forces on Monday to clear protesters from Lafayette Square before the President emerged from the White House to stand in front of St. John's Church and hold a Bible aloft.
Allen winds up hoping this will all lead to a more enlightened America.
But, he notes, "it will have to come from the bottom up. For at the White House, there is no one home."
The blasts from Allen and Mattis, who is far more cerebral than his nickname may imply, escalated a broadening front against Trump by Washington establishment elites outside the congressional Republican Party. They came after Jimmy Carter completed the roster of living ex-presidents who have stepped into a leadership void left by Trump as the nation experiences mass protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a pandemic that has killed 107,000 Americans and a consequent economic meltdown.
Other senior military and political figures, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, have also felt compelled to speak out as they perceive core American values threatened by an unchained commander in chief.
No modern President has faced such opprobrium from his predecessors or the men who have won their public respect in the heat of battle and served presidents of both parties.
Trump's presidency is now slipping ever closer to an existential crisis, five months before he faces judgment from voters after a campaign that is threatening to tear at social and racial wounds as never before during his turbulent term.
But Trump -- who made a political career out of bashing the establishment and torching presidential norms -- is showing no sign of backing down. On Wednesday he lambasted "looters," "hoodlums" and "terrorists" he claims are behind nationwide unrest. His aides, meanwhile, concocted ever more outrageous propaganda to justify his behavior, comparing his divisive stunt at a Washington church on Monday to Winston Churchill in World War II and President George W. Bush after the September 11 attacks.
Trump is now furious with the current defense secretary, Mark Esper, who spoke out against the President's threat to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to deploy troops inside the US.
The Pentagon chief is on thin political ice, as Trump's conservative media enablers egg him on. One ally, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, demanded an "overwhelming show of force" in a New York Times op-ed in defiance of "delusional" local leaders.
Wednesday brought another confusing whirl of fearful imagery with soldiers in combat fatigues on the streets of Washington and more looting in New York, though most protests across the country were increasingly peaceful. There were also inspirational acts as Capitol Police knelt before protesters and stories emerged of some white Americans perceiving for the first time the prejudice experienced by their black compatriots.
There is a palpable feeling that the country is at a signature moment in its racial journey after the death of Floyd last week with a policeman's knee on his neck, the latest sign of brutality toward African Americans that has shocked all races.
There was also a glimpse of the politics of hope, as former President Barack Obama implied that the answer to the tumultuous events of recent days was not the "domination" ordered by Trump but new motivation to turn protests into meaningful political change. Obama also dismissed the idea that America has plunged into the misery of a 1968-style race and political nightmare, noting that the multi-ethnic crowds of protesters thronging US streets were themselves a sign of dynamic progress.
"For those who have been talking about protests, just remember, this country was founded on protest. It is called the American Revolution," Obama said in a Zoom call with his youth organization, in an apparent indirect reference to Trump.
"And every step of progress in this country, every expansion of freedom, every expression of our deepest ideals, has been won through efforts that made the status quo uncomfortable. And we should all be thankful for folks who are willing in a peaceful, disciplined way to be out there making a difference," he added.

'Angry and appalled'

READ: Former Defense Secretary Mattis' statement on Trump and protests
Mattis, a statesman soldier respected across political lines who is a hero to the troops he led in Iraq and elsewhere, had vowed to stay out of politics in retirement. But his message made it clear that he could no longer hold his silence after watching a series of incidents he said had left him "angry and appalled."
"We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values -- our values as people and our values as a nation," Mattis wrote.
"When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution.
"Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens -- much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside."
"Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, DC, sets up a conflict -- a false conflict -- between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part," Mattis wrote.
In another explosive passage, Mattis recalled the instructions sent to US troops before they stormed the beaches of Normandy in 1944, implying that the President had more in common with mortal US enemies than the traditions of American democracy.
"The Nazi slogan for destroying us ... was 'Divide and Conquer.' Our American answer is 'In Union there is Strength.' We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis -- confident that we are better than our politics," he wrote.
The former defense secretary also implicitly criticized Esper, who referred to US cities as "battle space," a term he says he now regrets.

Esper in trouble?

Pentagon chief on shaky ground with White House after breaking with Trump over protest response
The message from Mattis broke on another extraordinary day in which it emerged that Esper may be on borrowed time after holding a news conference in which he said that regular troops should be used as law enforcement only as a last resort.
"We are not in one of those situations now," Esper told reporters. "I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act,."
His comments angered the White House, where multiple sources said he had already frustrated Trump.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that "as of right now Secretary Esper is still Secretary Esper" in a non-endorsement of the defense secretary.
If Esper pays for his dissent with his job, he will become just the latest senior US official to do so for prioritizing their duties to the rule of law or to their perception of US national interest. Trump demands total loyalty, despite his frequent power grabs that threaten the constitutional guardrails of his office. That's why men such as Mattis and former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson are no longer in the Cabinet -- and Attorney General William Barr and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are still serving the President.
Carter said Wednesday that "silence can be as deadly as violence" and called on Americans in positions of "power, privilege, and moral conscience" to fight racial discrimination, in his first public reaction to unrest surrounding the police killing of Floyd.
Former Presidents Bush and Bill Clinton had previously issued statements calling on Americans to engage in self-examination about the country's racial scars and to commit to building a new society.
Trump continued on Wednesday to portray protests across the nation following Floyd's death as an uprising of radicals, as he presses home his hardline "law and order" election theme.
He tweeted that if people watched media coverage they would think that "killers, terrorists, arsonists, anarchists, thugs, hoodlums, looters, ANTIFA & others, would be the nicest, kindest most wonderful people in the Whole Wide World. No, they are what they are - very bad for our Country!"
But the most significant statement of the day came from a former general who may have the most capacity of any Washington elite to undermine Trump with the military that is at his command.

Tesla Smashes Into Truck In Viral Video. Driver Blames Autopilot - NDTV

Tesla Smashes Into Truck In Viral Video. Driver Blames Autopilot

A Tesla Model 3 was filmed crashing into an overturned truck.

Shocking surveillance footage has captured the moment a Tesla vehicle, allegedly operating on Autopilot, crashed into an overturned truck in Taiwan early Monday morning. CCTV cameras captured the Tesla Model 3 failing to stop for an overturned truck and slamming right into it on a highway. According to Taiwan English News, the driver of the Tesla, Mr Huang, said that his car was in Autopilot mode and travelling at around 110 kilometers per hour at the time of the accident. He told emergency first responders that it did not have the Full Self-Driving feature engaged.

Tesla offers two types of semi-autonomous technology with its electric cars - Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Autopilot enables the car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane. Full Self-Driving is more advanced and also offers additional features like Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon, and Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control.

Smoke can be seen rising from the Tesla's tyres seconds before the crash. Mr Huang said he manually hit the brakes after spotting the truck, but it was too late to avoid the crash. Luckily, he managed to escape without any injuries, reports Fox News

CCTV footage of the incident has been widely shared online.

On Twitter, the video has been viewed over 2 lakh times, sparking a conversation around road safety.

Tesla has yet to comment on the incident. Its partially automated driving system has previously been involved in other crashes. In February, the National Transportation Safety Board of US found that Tesla's partially automated driving system steered an electric SUV into a concrete barrier on a Silicon Valley freeway because it was operating under conditions it couldn't handle and because the driver likely was distracted by playing a game on his smartphone.

Defense official resigns from Pentagon post, slams Esper for role in Trump photo op - CNBC

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

President Donald Trump walks with US Attorney General William Barr (L), US Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper (C), Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark A. Milley (R), and others from the White House to visit St. John's Church after the area was cleared of people protesting the death of George Floyd June 1, 2020, in Washington, DC.

WASHINGTON — "Where will you draw the line, and when will you draw it?"

In an extraordinary resignation letter, provided to The Washington Post, James Miller resigned from his post at the Pentagon's Defense Science Board.

Miller, a former undersecretary of defense for policy, cited Secretary of Defense Mark Esper's participation in President Donald Trump's Monday night photo op in front of St. John's Church.

The resignation comes as the nation braced for its eighth night of protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd. Here is part of the letter:

When I joined the Board in early 2014, after leaving government service as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, I again swore an oath of office, one familiar to you, that includes the commitment to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States . . . and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

You recited that same oath on July 23, 2019, when you were sworn in as Secretary of Defense. On Monday, June 1, 2020, I believe that you violated that oath. Law-abiding protesters just outside the White House were dispersed using tear gas and rubber bullets — not for the sake of safety, but to clear a path for a presidential photo op. You then accompanied President Trump in walking from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church for that photo.

President Trump's actions Monday night violated his oath to "take care that the laws be faithfully executed," as well as the First Amendment "right of the people peaceably to assemble." You may not have been able to stop President Trump from directing this appalling use of force, but you could have chosen to oppose it. Instead, you visibly supported it.

Anyone who takes the oath of office must decide where he or she will draw the line: What are the things that they will refuse to do? Secretary Esper, you have served honorably for many years, in active and reserve military duty, as Secretary of the Army, and now as Secretary of Defense. You must have thought long and hard about where that line should be drawn. I must now ask: If last night's blatant violations do not cross the line for you, what will?

Miller ended the letter by saying, "I wish you the best, in very difficult times. The sanctity of the U.S. Constitution, and the lives of Americans, may depend on your choices."

The Pentagon did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.

The presidential photo op

During a White House address Monday night, in which Trump threatened to deploy active-duty U.S. military if states failed to quell demonstrations, riot police forcibly cleared protesters out of Lafayette Square, a public park in front of the president's residence.

Once the protesters were forcibly cleared, Trump walked through the square with several members of his Cabinet as well as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley. The president then stood in front of the historic church holding a Bible and posing for photographs. He later motioned to members of his Cabinet to stand alongside him for more pictures.

Esper, who has previously said that he would preserve the U.S. military's apolitical nature, entered the frame and stood alongside Trump for the photo-op.

When asked Tuesday about Esper's decision to participate in the photograph, a senior Defense official said that the Secretary and the nation's highest-ranking military officer were unaware of Trump's plan to take the picture.

"The Secretary and the chairman were both actually heading to the Washington Field Office of the FBI to be co-located with the director of the FBI and the Attorney General to observe and provide leadership for response efforts last evening," explained a senior Defense official on a call with Pentagon reporters.

"They were not aware that the Park Police and law enforcement had made a decision to clear the square. And once they began that walk off the White House grounds with the president, their understanding was that they were going out of the White House to go into Lafayette Park to review the efforts to address the protests," added the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

In a Tuesday night interview with NBC News, Esper said "I didn't know where I was going" when asked about the highly criticized photo opportunity. "I thought I was going to do two things: to see some damage and to talk to the troops," he added.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

Read former Defense Secretary Mattis' statement on Trump's handling of nationwide protests - CNBC

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT

The following is a statement by former Secretary of Defense James Mattis published by The Atlantic. Mattis, a four-star U.S. Marine Corps General, served as President Donald Trump's 26th Secretary of Defense from 2017 to 2018.

In Union There is Strength

I have watched this week's unfolding events, angry and appalled. The words "Equal Justice Under Law" are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.

When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.

We must reject any thinking of our cities as a "battlespace" that our uniformed military is called upon to "dominate." At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. Keeping public order rests with civilian state and local leaders who best understand their communities and are answerable to them.

James Madison wrote in Federalist 14 that "America united with a handful of troops, or without a single soldier, exhibits a more forbidding posture to foreign ambition than America disunited, with a hundred thousand veterans ready for combat." We do not need to militarize our response to protests. We need to unite around a common purpose. And it starts by guaranteeing that all of us are equal before the law.

Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that "The Nazi slogan for destroying us…was 'Divide and Conquer.' Our American answer is 'In Union there is Strength.'" We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis—confident that we are better than our politics.

Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.

We can come through this trying time stronger, and with a renewed sense of purpose and respect for one another. The pandemic has shown us that it is not only our troops who are willing to offer the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of the community. Americans in hospitals, grocery stores, post offices, and elsewhere have put their lives on the line in order to serve their fellow citizens and their country. We know that we are better than the abuse of executive authority that we witnessed in Lafayette Park. We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution. At the same time, we must remember Lincoln's "better angels," and listen to them, as we work to unite.

Only by adopting a new path—which means, in truth, returning to the original path of our founding ideals—will we again be a country admired and respected at home and abroad.

James Mattis

US Defence Secretary breaks rank to oppose military enforcement in protests - Sky News Australia

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT

US Defence Secretary Mark Esper has broken government ranks to say he does not support the President's decision to mobilise the military in order to stop protests. President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to employ troops to "dominate" the streets if state governors refused to do so. Mr Esper said the decision to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role "should only be used as a last resort and only in the most urgent and dire situations". According to inside sources, the president and his team expressed frustration at the defence secretary's comments but White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany assured Mr Trump still had confidence in Mr Esper. It's a remarkable achievement for someone so young, since Margot only shot to fame internationally after her role in The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013.

She is more prolific than the likes of Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman, who placed second and third respectively in the list of hardest working actresses.

With 16 films to her name in the past five years, Nicole has proved Australians have an unparalleled work ethic in Hollywood.

As well as starring alongside Margot in Bombshell, the 52-year-old has appeared in Australian dramas like Boy Erased and Lion.

Google and Walmart’s PhonePe establish dominance in India’s mobile payments market as WhatsApp Pay struggles to launch - TechCrunch

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

In India, it's Google and Walmart-owned PhonePe that are racing neck-and-neck to be the top player in the mobile payments market, while Facebook remains mired in a regulatory maze for WhatsApp Pay's rollout.

In May, more than 75 million users transacted on Google Pay app, ahead of PhonePe's 60 million users, and SoftBank-backed Paytm's 30 million users, people familiar with the companies' figures told TechCrunch.

Google still lags Paytm's reach with merchants, but the Android-maker has maintained its overall lead in recent months despite every player losing momentum due to one of the most stringent lockdowns globally in place in India. Google declined to comment.

Paytm, once the dominant player in India, has been struggling to sustain its user base for nearly two years. The company had about 60 million transacting users in January last year, said people familiar with the matter.

Data sets consider transacting users to be those who have made at least one payment through the app in a month. It's a coveted metric and is different from the much more popular monthly active users, or MAU, that various firms use to share their performance. A portion of those labeled as monthly active users do not make any transaction on the app.

India's homegrown payment firm, Paytm, has struggled to grow in recent years in part because of a mandate by India's central bank to mobile wallet firms — the middlemen between users and banks — to perform know-your-client (KYC) verification of users, which created confusion among many, some of the people said. These woes come despite the firm's fundraising success, which amounts to more than $3 billion.

In a statement, a Paytm spokesperson said, "When it comes to mobile wallets one has to remember the fact that Paytm was the company that set up the infrastructure to do KYC and has been able to complete over 100 million KYCs by physically meeting customers."

Paytm has long benefited from integration with popular services such as Uber, and food delivery startups Swiggy and Zomato, but fewer than 10 million of Paytm's monthly transacting users have relied on this feature in recent months.

Two executives, who like everyone else spoke on the condition of anonymity because of fear of retribution, also said that Paytm resisted the idea of adopting Unified Payments Interface. That's the nearly two-year-old payments infrastructure built and backed by a collation of banks in India that enables money to be sent directly between accounts at different banks and eliminates the need for a separate mobile wallet.

Paytm's delays in adopting the standard left room for Google and PhonePe, another early adopter of UPI, to seize the opportunity.

Paytm, which adopted UPI a year after Google and PhonePe, refuted the characterization that it resisted joining UPI ecosystem.

"We are the company that cherishes innovation and technology that can transform the lives of millions. We understand the importance of financial technology and for this very reason, we have always been the champion and supporter of UPI. We, however, launched it on Paytm later than our peers because it took a little longer for us to get the approval to start UPI based services," a spokesperson said.

Missing from the fray is Facebook, which counts India as its biggest market by user count. The company began talks with banks to enter India's mobile payments market, estimated to reach $1 trillion by 2023 (according to Credit Suisse), through WhatsApp as early as 2017. WhatsApp is the most popular smartphone app in India with over 400 million users in the country.

Facebook launched WhatsApp Pay to a million users in the following year, but has been locked in a regulatory battle since to expand the payments service to the rest of its users. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said WhatsApp Pay would roll out nationwide by end of last year, but the firm is yet to secure all approvals — and new challenges keep cropping up. WhatsApp declined to comment.

PhonePe, which was conceived only a year before WhatsApp set eyes to India's mobile payments, has consistently grown as it added several third-party services. These include leading food and grocery delivery services Swiggy and Grofers, ride-hailing giant Ola, ticketing and staying players Ixigo and Oyo Hotels, in a so-called super app strategy. In November, about 63 million users were active on PhonePe, 45 million of whom transacted through the app.

Karthik Raghupathy, the head of business at PhonePe, confirmed the company's transacting users to TechCrunch.

Three factors contributed to the growth of PhonePe, he said in an interview. "The rise of smartphones and mobile data adoption in recent years; early adoption to UPI at a time when most mobile payments firms in India were betting on virtual mobile-wallet model; and taking an open-ecosystem approach," he said.

"We opened our consumer base to all our merchant partners very early on. Our philosophy was that we would not enter categories such as online ticketing for movies and travel, and instead work with market leaders on those fronts," he explained.

"We also went to the market with a completely open, interoperable QR code that enabled merchants and businesses to use just one QR code to accept payments from any app — not just ours. Prior to this, you would see a neighborhood store maintain several QR codes to support a number of payment apps. Over the years, our approach has become the industry norm," he said, adding that PhonePe has been similarly open to other wallets and payments options as well.

But despite the growth and its open approach, PhonePe has still struggled to win the confidence of investors in recent quarters. Stoking investors' fears is the lack of a clear business model for mobile payments firms in India.

PhonePe executives held talks to raise capital last year that would have valued it at $8 billion, but the negotiations fell apart. Similar talks early this year, which would have valued PhonePe at $3 billion, which hasn't been previously reported, also fell apart, three people familiar with the matter said. Raghupathy and a PhonePe spokesperson declined to comment on the company's fundraising plans.

For now, Walmart has agreed to continue to bankroll the payments app, which became part of the retail group with Flipkart acquisition in 2018.

As UPI gained inroads in the market, banks have done away with any promotional incentives to mobile payments players, one of their only revenue sources.

At an event in Bangalore late last year, Sajith Sivanandan, managing director and business head of Google Pay and Next Billion User Initiatives, said current local rules have forced Google Pay to operate without a clear business model in India.

Coronavirus takes its toll on payments companies

The coronavirus pandemic that prompted New Delhi to order a nationwide lockdown in late March preceded a significant, but predictable, drop in mobile payments usage in the following weeks. But while Paytm continues to struggle in bouncing back, PhonePe and Google Pay have fully recovered as India eased some restrictions.

About 120 million UPI transactions occurred on Paytm in the month of May, down from 127 million in April and 186 million in March, according to data compiled by NPCI, the body that oversees UPI, and obtained by TechCrunch. (Paytm maintains a mobile wallet business, which contributes to its overall transacting users.)

Google Pay, which only supports UPI payments, facilitated 540 million transactions in May, up from 434 million in April and 515 million in March. PhonePe's 454 million March figure slid to 368 million in April, but it turned the corner, with 460 million transactions last month. An NPCI spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

PhonePe and Google Pay together accounted for about 83% of all UPI transactions in India last month.

Industry executives working at rival firms said it would be a mistake to dismiss Paytm, the one-time leader of the mobile payments market in India.

Paytm has cut its marketing expenses and aggressively chased merchants in recent quarters. Earlier this year, it unveiled a range of gadgets, including a device that displays QR check-out codes that comes with a calculator and USB charger, a jukebox that provides voice confirmations of transactions and services to streamline inventory management for merchants.

Merchants who use these devices pay a recurring fee to Paytm, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, co-founder and chief executive of the firm told TechCrunch in an interview earlier this year. Paytm has also entered several businesses, such as movie and travel ticketing, lending, games and e-commerce, and set up a digital payments bank over the years.

"Everyone knows Paytm. Paytm is synonymous with digital payments in India. And outside, there's a perceived notion that it's truly the Alipay of India," an executive at a rival firm said.

U.K. Willing To Admit Nearly 3 Million From Hong Kong If China Adopts Security Law - NPR

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, shown here leaving Downing Street in London on Wednesday, published a column in The Times of London urging China to rethink its proposed national security law. Chris J Ratcliffe/Getty Images hide caption

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday that he would be willing to allow more than 2.8 million people from Hong Kong to live and work in the U.K. if China implements a controversial proposed national security law on the former British colony.

The law could take effect as soon as this month, and would expand mainland China's control over Hong Kong.

Johnson wrote in a column that appeared in The Times of London that the law would infringe on the "one country, two systems" agreement China reached with Britain in 1997 when Britain ceded control of the territory.

He added that the law "would curtail [Hong Kong's] freedoms and dramatically erode its autonomy."

If China were to implement the law, Johnson wrote, Britain is prepared to take in around 350,000 people from Hong Kong who already have British National (Overseas) passports and 2.5 million who would be eligible to apply for them.

He also noted that the U.K. would be making "one of the biggest changes in our visa system in history." It would allow Hong Kongers with these passports to come to the U.K. for a renewable period of a year. The current system allows them to come without a visa for up to six months.

The potential new system would include a right to work and, potentially, a path to citizenship.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had previously suggested that the U.K. could admit a smaller group, according to a report from The Guardian. Raab said Tuesday that Britain could take in those currently with passports, but said that if a mass exodus from Hong Kong took place he would want other countries to also admit people.

Johnson's proposal comes just one day before the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, which took place on June 4, 1989, when the Chinese military opened fire on citizens calling for economic and democratic reforms.

Johnson did not elaborate in the column about how the 2.5 million people eligible for a British passport would be able to attain one, or how arrivals from Hong Kong would attain citizenship.

"Many people in Hong Kong fear that their way of life — which China pledged to uphold — is under threat," Johnson wrote. "If China proceeds to justify their fears, then Britain could not in good conscience shrug our shoulders and walk away... I still hope that China will remember that responsibilities go hand in glove with strength and leadership."

N.J.’s Peggy Pope, ‘attagirl’ actress from ‘9 to 5,’ dead at 91 - nj.com

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Peggy Pope, an actress known for delivering the catchword "attagirl!" in the movie "9 to 5," has died, Variety reports. She was 91.

Pope played a secretary named Margaret in the 1980 classic opposite Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. "Attagirl" was her way of encouraging co-workers in an office where three women come together to strike back against their sexist boss.

The actress, born in Montclair, died May 27 in Fort Collins, Colorado, according to an announcement from her family.

Pope followed up "9 to 5" by joining the cast of an ABC series based on the film.

"Violet, where are you going?" Margaret asks Lily Tomlin's character in the movie.

"I'm gonna get drunk," Violet replies.

"Attagirl," Margaret says. She has the same response when Dolly Parton's character, Doralee, decides to go get a drink and take the rest of the day off.

She used the word for her autobiography, "Atta Girl: Tales From a Life in the Trenches of Show Business."

"It was a good movie and a good part," Pope wrote in her book. "At the end, my character comes back from rehab, hair combed, looking spiffy and ready for the sequel. Underdogs climbing to the top is a fine formula, and it's always good to be in at the end of a film so people remember you were in it."

Pope, born Florence Margaret Pope, had a 50-year career in entertainment. She appeared on Broadway in 1959 with Wally Cox in "Moonbirds," won an Obie Award in 1968 for "Muzeeka" and went on to star with Jimmy Stewart in a 1970 production of "Harvey."

Her other film roles included the 1984 movie "The Last Starfighter," the 1996 film "The Substitute" and the 2008 movie "Choke."

Her TV roles ranged from appearances on "Bewitched," "Soap" and "Barnaby Jones" to "Hill Street Blues," "Rhoda," "The Golden Girls," "Billy," "ER," "St. Elsewhere" and "Night Court."
