Singapore's ruling party returns to power but faces setback - TRT World Posted: 11 Jul 2020 01:08 AM PDT The Election Department has said People's Action Party secured 83 parliamentary seats, or 89% of the total.Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's long-governing party comfortably has won on Friday's general elections, which took place amid the coronavirus pandemic, but faced a setback as the opposition made minor gains. Lee said his People's Action Party secured 83 parliamentary seats, or 89% of the total, while its popular vote dipped to 61%. The Workers Party, the only opposition with a presence in parliament, increased its seats from six to 10. It marked a decline in the PAP's performance from 2015 polls where it took 93% of seats and nearly 70% of total vote. "It's not as strong a mandate as I hoped for but it's a good mandate," Lee told a news conference. "This was not a feel-good election but one where people are facing real problems and expect more rough weather to come." The PAP has dominated politics since 1959, when Lee's father, Lee Kuan Yew, became Singapore's first prime minister and built the resource-poor city-state into one of the world's richest nations during 31 years in office. But it has also been criticised for tight government control, media censorship and use of oppressive laws and civil lawsuits against dissidents. Polling was earlier extended by two hours until 10 pm (1400 GMT) after strict safety measures in place for Southeast Asia's first national election amid the pandemic delayed voting at some stations. Some opposition parties slammed the move as irregular and warned it may compromise the election's integrity. 'So arrogant' Voting is compulsory in the tiny city-state, one of a handful of countries that has held elections during the pandemic. The Election Department earlier dropped a requirement that disposable gloves be worn during voting to cut waiting time. Retiree Dennis Phua said the election shouldn't have been rushed since the PAP's five-year mandate would have continued until next April. He said he hopes for louder opposition voices in parliament so the PAP wont be "so arrogant." "There are so many things we are not satisfied with. It's a good government, but the way they do things can be better," Phua said as he waited outside a school to vote. But not all agree. "I hope that it will remain as the status quo. For so many years, it has been the same and so far so good," said homemaker Florence See. She praised the government for putting in place strict measures to protect voters. Lee has faced opposition from his estranged younger brother, Lee Hsien Yang, who said the PAP had turned into an elitist party. The younger Lee joined an opposition party last month but is not running in the election. The prime minister has said the polls are about ensuring a strong government to secure the country's future, not his family feud. Cases exceed 45,000 Singapore's election follows polls in Serbia and Mongolia last month and in South Korea in April, when governing parties in all three countries scored resounding victories. The polls come just weeks after the country emerged from a two-month lockdown aimed at controlling one of Asia's worst coronavirus outbreaks. The tiny nation of 5.8 million people has reported more than 45,000 cases, most of them foreign workers living in crowded dormitories that were overlooked in the early phase of its crisis management. READ MORE: Singaporeans go to polls amid virus pandemic With the economy forecast to shrink this year by up to 7%, Lee's government has unveiled several economic assistance packages totalling nearly $71.7 billion (100 billion Singapore dollars) but warned the full economic impact hasn't been felt yet. While coronavirus cases have mostly declined, new daily cases still top 100. The government determined the election could be held safely with the number of polling stations increased from 880 to 1,100 and other safety measures such as masks and temperature checks. Voters were given a two-hour window to cast their ballots to reduce crowding, with senior citizens give priority to vote in the first four hours. Election officials were wearing full personal protective gear and polling booths were sanitised every half hour. People being treated for Covid-19 or under quarantine at home were not allowed to vote. Posted: 11 Jul 2020 12:48 AM PDT VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - Search and recovery efforts for missing mother and actress Naya Rivera continued Friday at Lake Piru with the help of rescue teams and innovative technology, Ventura County officials said. "Today, we're using a little bit less people in the search but more technology to help us find better clues. We have boats going out with specific missions to deploy sonar and help identify targets to investigate. We can't put them all in the water at the same time. We have to plan these missions and coordinate them so they don't overlap with one another. So, they're going out in sort of a methodical way," Ventura County Sheriff Sgt. Donoghue said. Security video was released Thursday that showed the 33-year-old parking her black Mercedes G-Wagon and then walking with her 4-year-old son, Josey, to the pontoon boat she rented on Wednesday afternoon. RELATED: Surveillance video, 911 call released amid search for 'Glee' actress Naya Rivera in Lake Piru Advertisement Nearly four hours later, the boat was found drifting in the northern portion of the lake. Her son was found sleeping alone with a life vest on and Rivera was nowhere in sight. Rescue efforts started early Wednesday evening after someone on the lake made the 911 call. On Thursday, the search team included about 100 people including divers and an air crew. Also on Thursday, Rivera was presumed dead by authorities. An estimated 70 to 80 people continued with recovery efforts Friday with more resources, including cadaver dogs. Authorities said that rescue crews first use sonar technology to narrow down the search areas where they may find clues before sending in dive teams. "In a lake, the visibility is not very good," Sgt. Donoghue said. "If you've ever watched underwater video and you've seen divers in the ocean, typically the visibility in the ocean water is much better. So, in the lake, the visibility is terrible. At this particular lake [in the area where Riviera's rented pontoon boat was found] there's a lot of trees and plants and such that are under the water that can cause entanglements. It makes it unsafe for the divers and it makes a more complicated search." One of the divers told FOX 11's Mario Ramirez he could only see about a few feet in front of him. It is believed Josey is currently under the care of his father and Rivera's ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey. Rivera started acting at a young age. Jackee Harry shared a clip of the two of them from the show, "The Royal Family," on Twitter and said she is praying for Rivera. Rivera is best known for playing the role of Santana Lopez on the hit FOX show "Glee," for six years. MacBook Pro with Apple's new processor expected later this year, top Apple analyst says - CNBC Posted: 10 Jul 2020 11:08 PM PDT The 2020 MacBook Air on the left versus the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro on the right. Todd Haselton | CNBC Top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said predicted on Friday that the company will launch a new MacBook Pro with its in-house chips in the fourth quarter. Apple announced during its annual developer conference in June that it will move its computers from Intel chips to Apple-made processors. It currently uses its own chips for iPhones and iPads but has been using Intel processors for its computers for 15 years. CEO Tim Cook said at the conference that Apple will ship the first Macs with its own chips by the end of this year and that it will complete its transition in about two years. The company has not yet said which computers will be among the first to get the new chips. An Apple spokesperson wasn't immediately available to comment. "We predict that Apple will launch new MacBook models including the new 13.3-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the Apple Silicon in 4Q20, the new MacBook Air equipped with the Apple Silicon in 4Q20 or 1Q21, and new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with the Apple Silicon and all-new form factor design in late 2Q21 or 3Q21," TF International Securities' Kuo said in a note. "In our bull-case scenario, the MacBook shipments in 2021 will markedly increase to 18–20 mn units if Apple lowers the price of MacBook Air equipped with the lower-cost Apple Silicon and the demand for the all-new form factor design 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models is better than that of legacy models." Macs with Apple processors will allow the company to more closely control the Mac release schedule and deliver improvements, such as improved battery life, since it won't need to wait for Intel to build and launch new chips. But it may face challenges to ensure that outside apps run on its computers. Apple hopes to avoid that challenge by providing a feature called "Rosetta 2" that will allow apps that haven't been updated for its new processors to run on new computers. And it's providing new tools to help developers port their apps over. How the dramatic death of Seoul's mayor left a country divided - CNN Posted: 10 Jul 2020 11:08 PM PDT On the surface, Park certainly had an impressive resume. The 64-year-old former human rights lawyer had represented the victim in the first sexual assault case in South Korean history, before a shift to politics saw him serve as Seoul mayor for nine years. But this week, his legacy was called into question. Local media reported Thursday that Park had himself been accused of sexual harassment, with police later confirming that a complaint had been lodged, although they didn't specify the nature of the claim. Park was reported missing by his daughter on Thursday evening. After a seven-hour search, he was found dead on a mountainside near his official residence, police said in the early hours of Friday. Officials have not revealed how he died -- but ruled out foul play. "I am sorry to everyone," Park said in a handwritten note found at his Seoul residence that was shared with media Friday. "Thank you for everyone who has been with me in my life. I am sorry to my family for I have only caused them pain." A stately careerPrior to his death, Park was widely seen as an energetic, personable leader. He was part of the team of lawyers to represent Kwon In-sook, a university student who said she had been sexually assaulted by police in the city of Bucheon in 1986. One officer was convicted. According to Kwon's office, she was the first woman to bring charges of sexual assault against authorities. Park earned a diploma in international law at the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London, and was a visiting research fellow for the Human Rights Program at Harvard University's School of Law. He also had an interest in activism. As a young man, he was arrested for rallying against then-President Park Chung-hee, who many called a military dictator. He founded a number of organizations, including the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, which promotes democracy and human rights in South Korea. Then, in 2011, Park was elected Seoul mayor in a landslide victory. It sparked a public frenzy -- he was a political outsider, and his unexpected defeat of a candidate from the ruling party was seen as a sign that South Koreans were tired of traditional politics. As mayor, Park championed city welfare projects and became a symbol of reform. He was re-elected in both 2014 and 2018, making him the city's first elected mayor to serve three terms, and many voters even saw him as a possible presidential candidate when current President Moon Jae-in's term finishes in 2022. Mixed reactionPark's death prompted mixed reactions in the South Korean capital. Video on Yonhap, the country's government-funded news agency, showed mourners outside the hospital where Park's body lies crying and shouting "Mayor, you shouldn't go like this," and "I love you, Park Won-soon." Acting Mayor Seo Jung-hyup, who took over the role following Park's death, also expressed his condolences. "I send my condolences to citizens who must be sad and confused by his sudden death," he said in a press conference Friday. "The Seoul government should not stop and must keep going strongly, prioritizing safety and welfare following mayor Park Won-soon's philosophy." But others are angry that a court will never hear the allegations against Park. Under South Korean law, when a suspect dies, open investigations are closed as the prosecutors have no ground to make an indictment. As of 9 a.m. local time Saturday, more than 344,000 people had signed a formal petition opposing Park's city funeral, which has been set for July 13. "What message do you want to send to the public?" the page says. In a statement, a representative of Park's family asked the public to show respect. "If repeated defamation of the deceased Park continues, we will have to take legal measures," the statement said. Bigger picturePark's death comes as South Korea confronts traditional domestic perceptions of sexual assault -- notably a reckoning against what some see as a misogynist culture. According to OECD data, South Korea has the highest suicide rate in the world. The country has been rocked by a series of high-profile sexual assault and harassment allegations in recent years, including against entertainment stars, sports coaches and a former top prosecutor. Political leaders have not been immune. Last year, former governor and one-time presidential contender Ahn Hee-jung was sentenced to more than three years for the rape and assault of his former assistant. Earlier this year, Oh Keo-don, the mayor of South Korea's second-largest city, Busan, resigned and apologized for sexual harassment. Both Ahn and Oh were associated with the President Moon's Democratic Party. Turkey's president formally would make Hagia Sophia a mosque - Aviation Analysis Wing Posted: 10 Jul 2020 10:08 PM PDT ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The president of Turkey on Friday formally converted Istanbul's sixth-century Hagia Sophia back again into a mosque and declared it open for Muslim worship, hrs right after a substantial courtroom annulled a 1934 choice that experienced built the spiritual landmark a museum. The choice sparked deep dismay amid Orthodox Christians. At first a cathedral, Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque following Istanbul's conquest by the Ottoman Empire but had been a museum for the final 86 several years, drawing tens of millions of tourists yearly. Dozens of men and women awaiting the court's ruling chanted "Allah is fantastic!" when the news broke. A significant crowd later on prayed exterior it. TURKEY Concerns PRESIDENTIAL DECREE TO Convert HAGIA SOPHIA Again INTO MOSQUE In the money of Ankara, legislators stood and applauded as the final decision was read through in Parliament. He rejected the plan that the choice finishes Hagia Sophia's standing as a composition that delivers faiths with each other. "Turning it into a mosque will not do just about anything for the Muslim earth. It does not provide nations alongside one another, but on the opposite provides them into collision," he said. The debate hits at the heart of Turkey's religious-secular divide. Nationalist and conservative groups in Turkey have very long yearned to maintain prayers at Hagia Sophia, which they regard as element of the Muslim Ottoman legacy. Other people believe it must continue to be a museum, as a image of Christian and Muslim solidarity. "It was a construction that brought alongside one another equally Byzantine and Ottoman histories," stated Zeynep Kizildag, a 27-yr-outdated social employee, who did not aid the conversion. "The selection to flip it into a mosque is like erasing 1,000 many years of background, in my belief." Garo Paylan, an ethnic Armenian member of Turkey's Parliament tweeted that it was "a sad day for Christians (and) for all who feel in a pluralist Turkey." "The selection to transform Hagia Sophia into a mosque will make daily life additional challenging for Christians listed here and for Muslims in Europe," he wrote. "Hagia Sophia was a symbol of our loaded historical past. Its dome was huge plenty of for all." The team that brought the scenario to courtroom had contested the legality of the 1934 conclusion by the fashionable Turkish republic's secular government ministers, arguing the making was the personal home of Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, who conquered Istanbul in 1453. "I was not shocked at all that the court weighed to sanction Erdogan's moves simply because these times Erdogan will get from Turkish courts what Erdogan would like," claimed Soner Cagaptay, of the Washington Institute. "Erdogan desires to use Hagia Sophia's conversion into a mosque to rally his suitable-wing base," stated Cagaptay, the creator of "Erdogan's Empire." "But I really don't assume this approach will work. I assume that quick of financial growth, almost nothing will restore Erdogan's acceptance." Click on Here TO GET THE FOX News App In Paris, the United Nations cultural system, UNESCO, explained it deeply regretted the decision. "Its standing as a museum displays the universal character of its heritage, and tends to make it a highly effective symbol for dialogue," said Director-Typical Audrey Azoulay. The Istanbul-centered Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, regarded the religious leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, warned final thirty day period that the building's conversion into a mosque "will change hundreds of thousands of Christians across the world in opposition to Islam." Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, referred to as for "prudence" and the preservation of the "current neutral status" for the Hagia Sophia, which he said was a single of Christianity's "devoutly honored symbols." U.S. Point out Secretary Mike Pompeo reported very last thirty day period the landmark really should continue being a museum to serve as bridge among faiths and cultures. His feedback sparked a rebuke from Turkey's Overseas Ministry, which claimed Hagia Sophia was a domestic issue of Turkish nationwide sovereignty. Erdogan, a devout Muslim, has regularly made use of the Hagia Sophia concern to drum up assist for his Islamic-rooted social gathering. Some Islamic prayers have been held in the museum in current several years. In a main symbolic go, Erdogan recited the opening verse of the Quran there in 2018. Trump commutes Roger Stone's sentence - CNN Posted: 10 Jul 2020 10:08 PM PDT Stone was convicted in November of seven charges -- including lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing a congressional committee proceeding -- as part of former special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. Among the things he misled Congress about were his communications with Trump campaign officials -- communications that prosecutors said Stone hid out of his desire to protect Trump. Trump's decision to pardon his friend and political adviser is the crescendo of a months-long effort to rewrite the history of the Mueller investigation. This has included selective declassification of intelligence materials, a ramped-up counter-investigation into the origins of the Russia probe and attempts to drop the case against Michael Flynn. The President has broad constitutional power to pardon or commute sentences. But Trump is unlike almost any other president in how he's used the power proactively to save political allies. "Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency," said Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary. "There was never any collusion between the Trump Campaign, or the Trump Administration, with Russia." She added, "Mr. Stone, like every American, deserves a fair trial and every opportunity to vindicate himself before the courts. The President does not wish to interfere with his efforts to do so. At this time, however, and particularly in light of the egregious facts and circumstances surrounding his unfair prosecution, arrest, and trial, the President has determined to commute his sentence. Roger Stone has already suffered greatly. He was treated very unfairly, as were many others in this case. Roger Stone is now a free man!" The clock for Stone was ticking. The Justice Department said this week it supported Stone going to prison Tuesday and an appeals court declined to give him another delay on Friday. Trump's move spares Stone from having to serve prison time after Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced him in February to 40 months in prison. Stone's attorney, Grant Smith, applauded the President Friday for "this act of mercy." "Mr. Stone is incredibly honored that President Trump used his awesome and unique power under the Constitution of the United States for this act of mercy. Mr. and Mrs. Stone appreciate all the consideration the President gave to this matter," Smith said. A political firestormStone's criminal case has drawn intense political reactions since the beginning and the decision could set off another round of Trump's attacks on the Russia investigation, as well as criticism that Stone received the commutation because he's a friend of the President. Trump has faced immense pressure from some of his political allies to grant Stone clemency. Trump's knowledge of Stone's efforts to get leaked Democratic documents in 2016 was a major question in the Mueller investigation, one that Democrats on Capitol Hill still want to investigate. Several of Trump's advisers have voiced concern in recent months about the possible political repercussions of the President clearing his former adviser. But Stone's allies have lobbied Trump for months to clear him, telling him Stone was facing devastating legal fees. Not all the lobbying has been done behind closed doors. Some of Stone's closest confidantes -- including his daughter and friend Michael Caputo, who now works in the administration -- have advocated for a pardon on Fox News on Tucker Carlson's program, which Trump watches religiously. Stone himself circulated a petition on his website asking for Trump to grant him a full pardon. "It's time to stop the Deep State from working against our President," it says. "He stood with you against the hate directed at your campaign, and now he needs your help." At times Trump had seemed reluctant to intervene, fuming and bad-mouthing Stone to others. But the President sees his former confidant through the lens of himself, several people close to him say, viewing an attack on Stone as an attack on him. Extraordinary circumstancesStone, 67, was indicted in January 2019 when armed FBI agents arrested him at his Florida home. He had covered up records that would have revealed he sought to reach WikiLeaks in 2016 to help Trump, lied about the effort when he testified to a Republican-led congressional committee, then threatened another congressional witness, according to the charges brought by Mueller and the DC US Attorney's Office. At Stone's trial, prosecutors argued that "truth still matters." They claimed Stone lied to Congress because "it would look really bad for his longtime associate Donald Trump" if Stone had told the truth. The jury agreed with prosecutors and found Stone guilty of all seven charges he faced. Trump was incensed. He weighed in on Twitter, claiming Stone had been treated unfairly. He suggested the judge was biased and Stone deserved a new trial. In the meantime, Attorney General William Barr intervened in Stone's case. He publicly ridiculed prosecutors' request -- after it had been filed with the judge -- that Stone face seven to nine years in prison for his crime. Barr insisted he did not intervene at Trump's behest, but because Barr believed the original sentence recommendation was excessive. But after Justice Department leadership interjected, the two prosecutors who argued for the truth and made the case that Stone committed crimes in part to protect the President, both resigned from the case. The two other prosecutors on the case resigned as well. Since Stone's conviction, he's focused on criticizing the judge who oversaw his trial and one prosecutor, Aaron Zelinsky, who had worked on the Mueller investigation then on Stone's trial. Zelinsky testified to Congress in late June he knew of political pressure "from the highest levels" of the Justice Department to cut Stone a break. But even Barr in recent months called Stone's prosecution "righteous." "I was happy that he was convicted," Barr told ABC News in February. Stone's campaign pays offA gag order that was on Stone's case kept him essentially silent during his trial but was lifted soon after he was found guilty. In recent weeks, Stone has railed against prosecutors, the judge and the media in persistent attempts to appeal to Trump. He's publicly appealed for a pardon, claiming he was treated unfairly by the justice system and that coronavirus would be a death sentence if he were to surrender to prison. Stone pointed out the Jesup, Georgia, prison has 20 inmates who've tested positive for coronavirus. Two weeks ago, when Stone was originally set to report, that prison had no confirmed cases. "The number doubled since yesterday," Stone wrote on Friday. The Justice Department said on Friday it believed Stone should have had to go to prison on Tuesday, following a judge's order. "Your client has received at least as much if not more than the full and fair consideration, which he is due under the circumstances," prosecutor JP Cooney wrote to Stone's lawyer on June 22. Stone had been bearish that the appeals court would allow for another delay. On Instagram, he wrote that his request for a delay is a "Hail Mary appeal" that the appeals court "may or may not grant." "I want the President to know that I have exhausted all my legal remedies and that only an act of clemency will provide justice in my case and save my life!" Stone wrote late Monday. 40 years of friendshipThe friendship between Trump and Stone stretches back roughly 40 years, albeit with some rocky periods along the way. They were first introduced in the 1970s through a man they both admired: Roy Cohn, the lawyer who served as Sen. Joseph McCarthy's counsel during his communism investigation and who was later in life disbarred for unethical conduct. "Roy thought Roger was a very tough guy. Roy knew some very tough guys, I will tell you that. But Roy always felt that Roger was not only tough, but a smart guy and very political," Trump said in the 2017 Netflix documentary "Get Me Roger Stone." In the years that followed, Stone befriended the Trump family, attended two of Trump's three weddings, went to the funerals for both of Trump's parents and spent years agitating for his friend to run for president, Stone said in interviews. "I was like a jockey looking for a horse. You can't win the race if you don't have a horse. And he is a prime piece of political horse flesh, in my view," Stone said in the Netflix documentary about one of his efforts in the late 1980s to convince Trump to run for president. In the same documentary, Trump confirmed that Stone had pressed him over and over again to make a bid for the Oval Office. "Roger always wanted me to run for president. And over the years, every time a presidential race came up, he always wanted me to run," Trump said. "And I just didn't have interest at that time. And nor was the country in trouble like it is today." There were periods where the two men barely spoke. In a 2008 interview in The New Yorker, Trump said, "Roger is a stone-cold loser. ... He always tries taking credit for things he never did." But they always reconciled. The 2016 campaign proved to be Trump's big moment. And Stone was at his side, at least at the beginning. Trump announced his presidential bid in June 2015, with Stone serving as a senior adviser. Just two months later, Stone was out. Trump said he fired Stone. Stone said he quit. Stone remained a staunch supporter of Trump's campaign anyway. He did television appearances cheerleading Trump, called then-candidate Trump to give him advice and made recommendations when he believed the campaign was in crisis. Ahead of the Republican convention, some of Trump's allies worried he could lose the GOP nomination in a delegate fight. Stone and other Trump allies convinced Trump to bring Paul Manafort into the campaign to manage the convention. While Trump won the nomination, Manafort ended up being convicted of financial and foreign lobbying crimes as a result of Mueller's investigation and is currently serving out his prison sentence. Around the same time, the Trump campaign was eager to know what WikiLeaks had coming. At Stone's trial, former Trump deputy campaign manager Rick Gates testified that he was with Trump when Trump received a call from Stone about the planned release of hacked Democratic emails. "After Mr. Trump got off the phone with Mr. Stone, what did Mr. Trump say?" the prosecutor asked Gates. "He indicated more information would be coming," Gates responded. In the following months, Stone bragged publicly about being in touch with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and appeared to predict that new document dumps would be coming. The Mueller report also raised the possibility that Trump had lied to investigators in sworn answers about his communications with Stone regarding WikiLeaks. Stone has long embraced no-holds-barred politicking and sports a tattoo of former President Richard Nixon -- who also received clemency from a president -- on his back, as a tribute to his idol. Over his career, Stone earned a reputation as a dirty trickster and did little to try to water down the image. "Roger has a really rough reputation. They talk about dirty trickster and lots of other things," Trump said in the documentary about Stone. "But I've known him for a long time and he's actually a quality guy." Mobile App Fraud Jumped in Q1 as Attackers Pivot ... - Dark Reading Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:44 PM PDT RSA data reveals a continued shift away from browser-based fraud as attackers target mobile apps. One of the most significant developments in online fraud for consumer-facing organizations last quarter was a sharp increase in fraudulent transactions originating from mobile applications instead of mobile browsers. Though phishing dominated all other types of fraud, as it has for the past several years, a new analysis of cyberattack data by RSA's Fraud and Risk Intelligence team showed a dramatic shift in fraud activity within the mobile channel. Its analysis of global customer data, collected in the first quarter of 2020, showed a doubling in the volume of fraud transactions that originated in a mobile app rather than a mobile browser. In the fourth quarter of 2019, 72% of fraud activity that RSA tracked involved the mobile channel. Of that number, 59% originated from a mobile browser and 13% from mobile apps. In the first quarter of 2020, mobile app-related fraud soared to 26% while fraud originating from mobile browsers fell by a corresponding 13%. This represents the highest percentage of fraud involving mobile apps in nearly two years and underscores a broader shift away from fraud involving Web browsers on PCs. With the exception of the second and third quarters of 2019, RSA data showed the overall volume of fraud stemming from mobile channels, both mobile apps and mobile browsers, has been substantially greater than fraud originating from PC-based Web browsers since at least the first quarter of 2017. "The volume of fraud from mobile devices has been increasing steadily over the past several years, moving over from PC-based traffic," says Daniel Cohen, head of anti-fraud products at RSA. Much of this is related to the increased use of mobile devices for everyday transactions over the past few years. In the first quarter of 2020, however, another factor was at play. "Recently, with COVID-19 forcing us to do more things online that we once did physically, like grocery shopping, mobile transactions have become more prominent," Cohen says. RSA's data tracks with that from other security vendors. Last month, Lookout reported an increase of more than 66% in mobile phishing encounters among corporate users in North America, and a nearly 37% increase globally. In the first quarter of 2020, RSA counted 50,119 attacks involving phishing, Trojan horse malware, rogue mobile apps, and brand abuse involving social media and online content to mislead users via brand impersonation. More than half of attacks involved phishing and 22% involved brand abuse, the second-highest form of fraud. Rogue mobile apps accounted for 15% of attack types that RSA counted, followed by Trojan malware at 9%. Once again, Internet users in Canada were by far the most heavily targeted in phishing attacks. Sixty-six percent of phishing attacks that RSA counted were targeted at Canadian users. For two years in a row, and five straight quarters, Canada has been the biggest phishing target, according to RSA. The United States, an equally consistent — but distant — second-place target, accounted for 7% of phishing attacks in RSA's data last quarter. Other countries with fairly big targets on their backs included Spain, India, and the Netherlands. When it came to countries hosting the highest number of phishing attacks, however, the US topped the list followed by China, Germany, India, and Russia. Like numerous recent studies have shown, a high percentage of phishing activity in the first quarter of 2020 involved COVID-19 themed messages and lures. "While fraudsters always take advantage of disruptions, COVID-19 is currently the go-to tool for targeting end users," Cohen says. "As we continue through the pandemic, people will need to be extra cautious before they click on links. Otherwise, they're opening up themselves and potentially their businesses to new risks." Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT MANCHESTER United and Wolves could face a Prem showdown in Germany for the chance to reach the Europa League Final. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men, 5-0 up from their first leg against Austrian side LASK, are racing certainties to reach the last eight phase of the delayed competition, being played to a finish in four German cities. And if United can then get past the challenge of Turkish league leaders Istanbul Basaksehir or Denmark's Copenhagen, they would be in line to take on Nuno Espirito Santo's side in the last four. Basaksehir, four points clear at the top of the Turkish SuperLig with three games to go, won 1-0 in the home first leg. Wolves, level after their first leg with Olympiacos in Greece, will have home advantage at Molineux for the return game next month. MAN UTD NEWS LIVE: Follow for the latest United newsIf they do win, then they will face either Sevilla or Roma in the quarter-finals, with United hoping to be lying in wait. The last 16 ties will be completed on August 5 and 6. Six of the matches, including the two involving the English sides, will see the second legs played, as planned, in teams' home stadiums. But the two ties that did not start because of Covid-19 lockdowns, between Inter Milan and Getafe and the Sevilla versus Roma clash, will be played as one-off ties on neutral territory in Germany. Four cities, Dusseldorf, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen and Cologne, will stage games. All the matches from the last eight stage will also be decided over 90 minutes with extra-time and penalties available if required between August 5 and the final in Cologne on August 21. The other half of the draw is likely to see Donetsk facing Basel in the last eight after both sides won away at Wolfsburg and Frankfurt respectively in their first legs. The winner of Inter's tie with Getafe will meet Leverkusen unless Rangers can turn round the 3-1 deficit from the first leg at Ibrox. President Donald Trump commutes ally Roger Stone's prison sentence - CNBC Posted: 10 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT Roger Stone, departs following a status hearing in the criminal case against him brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller at U.S. District Court in Washington, U.S., March 14, 2019. Joshua Roberts | Reuters President Donald Trump on Friday fully commuted the criminal sentence of his longtime ally Roger Stone, just four days before the Republican operative was due to begin a 40-month prison term. The White House, in announcing the executive clemency grant to Stone, called the 67-year-old Republican operative "a victim of the Russia hoax," and someone who "would be put at serious medical risk" from the coronavirus if he was imprisoned. "In light of the egregious facts and circumstances surrounding his unfair prosecution, arrest, and trial, the President has determined to commute his sentence," White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement. "Roger Stone has already suffered greatly. He was treated very unfairly, as were many others in this case. Roger Stone is now a free man!" she said. Trump phoned Stone to deliver the news, NBC News reported. Although Stone is no longer required to serve any time in prison, he has said that he will continue to seek to overturn his conviction for lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering. Trump's long-suspected intervention in the case of his former campaign official came after more than a year of the president railing against Stone's prosecution as a miscarriage of justice and a "witch hunt." On Friday morning, Trump said he was "looking at" a pardon for Stone, who was "very unfairly treated." House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., quickly condemned the commutation, saying Trump has made it "clear that there are two systems of justice in America: one for his criminal friends, and one for everyone else." About an hour before Trump's commutation of his sentence was announced, a panel of federal appeals judges denied a request from Stone to delay his prison surrender date until early September. The attorneys had argued Stone would be at risk of contracting the coronavirus if he reported to a federal prison camp in Georgia on Tuesday, as was scheduled. "Mr. Stone is incredibly honored that President Trump used his awesome and unique power under the Constitution of the United States for this act of mercy," Grant Smith, an attorney for Stone, told CNBC in a statement. "Mr. and Mrs. Stone appreciate all the consideration the President gave to this matter." Robert Buschel, another of Stone's lawyers, told NBC News: "We are grateful and relieved. And glad this nightmare is over." On Friday, Stone spoke with NBC analyst Howard Fineman and told him that he did not want a pardon, as that would imply guilt, but instead a commutation of his sentence, which he believed Trump would grant. Stone said of Trump, "He knows I was under enormous pressure to turn on him. It would have eased my situation considerably. But I didn't," according to a tweet by Fineman. The charges in the case related to Stone's efforts during the 2016 presidential campaign to get information from document disclosure group WikiLeaks about emails stolen by Russian agents from John Podesta, head of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign, as well as from the Democratic National Committee. He also was convicted of pressuring his former friend, comedian Randy Credico, to back up his lies. The case against Stone was originally lodged by special counsel Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who was cast with investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, as well as possible coordination with Russian agents by the Trump campaign. At Stone's trial, Rick Gates, a former top Trump campaign official, testified that he had been with Trump in July 2016 while the then-presidential candidate had a phone call with Stone. Gates testified that after the call ended, Trump indicated that "more information would be coming" from Wikileaks. Trump told Mueller in written answers in 2018 that he had no recollection of speaking to Stone about WikiLeaks. But Trump also told Mueller that "I was aware that WikiLeaks was the subject of media reporting and campaign-related discussion at the time." The White House statement issued Friday evening took aim at Mueller's investigation, which Trump has long criticized as a hoax. "Mr. Stone was charged by the same prosecutors from the Mueller Investigation tasked with finding evidence of collusion with Russia," the statement said. "Because no such evidence exists, however, they could not charge him for any collusion-related crime. Instead, they charged him for his conduct during their investigation. The simple fact is that if the Special Counsel had not been pursuing an absolutely baseless investigation, Mr. Stone would not be facing time in prison," the statement said. Trump's prior comments on Stone's case fueled speculation that he was considering pardoning Stone or commuting his sentence. The president left open the possibility of a pardon when asked about it in February, ahead of Stone's sentencing. That same month, Trump commented on a tweet from a supporter who had written, "Raise your hand if you believe it's time for a FULL PARDON for Roger Stone and Michael Flynn." The president responded in a tweet of his own, saying: "Prosecutorial Misconduct?" More recently, in June, Trump tweeted that Stone "was a victim of a corrupt and illegal Witch Hunt, one which will go down as the greatest political crime in history. He can sleep well at night!" Stone's legal battle had been marked by the ostentatious operative's head-turning theatrics from nearly the moment of his arrest in January 2019, when he was cuffed in a dramatic predawn raid at his Florida home. A CNN film crew on the scene captured footage of the arrest – and sparked the first of many moments of partisan rancor the case would inspire. After an initial appearance before a judge, Stone declared his innocence to the sea of reporters gathered outside the Ft. Lauderdale courthouse and vowed not to "bear false witness" against Trump. The president had previously applauded his ally's "guts" in taking a hard-line stance against then-special counsel Robert Mueller, whose grand jury would indict Stone on seven criminal counts. Stone's social media behavior became a regular source of controversy during his prosecution. Amy Berman Jackson, the judge in Washington, D.C., district court who would later sentence Stone to more than three years locked up, hauled him into court to explain himself after he posted a photo on Instagram showing the judge next to a rifle scope's crosshairs. The self-described "dirty trickster" Stone said he was sorry for his "stupidity," but Jackson suggested the apology rang hollow and imposed a full gag order on him. She later banned him from posting on social media entirely after ruling that he violated that gag order. Stone had fought to stay out of prison after a jury convicted him last fall of all seven counts. He sought to have his conviction set aside by claiming that the jury forewoman lied on a questionnaire she had filled out during jury selection. Jackson denied that request for a retrial in April. Later that same month, Stone appealed his conviction to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. As his prison surrender date approached, Stone asked the same appeals court to grant an emergency motion to delay his incarceration until Sept. 3. His defense lawyers, in making that request, cited "the COVID-19 pandemic and the medically documented life-threatening health risks that Stone would face if incarcerated at this time." Stone had openly and repeatedly beseeched Trump for clemency. "I want the president to know that I have exhausted all my legal remedies and that only an act of clemency will provide justice in my case and save my life!" Stone reportedly said in a text message to Bloomberg days ago. Read the full statement from the White House below:Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding Executive Grant of Clemency for Roger Stone, Jr. Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Grant of Clemency commuting the unjust sentence of Roger Stone, Jr. Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency. There was never any collusion between the Trump Campaign, or the Trump Administration, with Russia. Such collusion was never anything other than a fantasy of partisans unable to accept the result of the 2016 election. The collusion delusion spawned endless and farcical investigations, conducted at great taxpayer expense, looking for evidence that did not exist. As it became clear that these witch hunts would never bear fruit, the Special Counsel's Office resorted to process-based charges leveled at high-profile people in an attempt to manufacture the false impression of criminality lurking below the surface. These charges were the product of recklessness borne of frustration and malice. This is why the out-of-control Mueller prosecutors, desperate for splashy headlines to compensate for a failed investigation, set their sights on Mr. Stone. Roger Stone is well known for his nearly 50 years of work as a consultant for high-profile Republican politicians, including President Ronald Reagan, Senator Bob Dole, and many others. He is also well known for his outspoken support for President Donald J. Trump and opposition to Hillary Clinton. Mr. Stone was charged by the same prosecutors from the Mueller Investigation tasked with finding evidence of collusion with Russia. Because no such evidence exists, however, they could not charge him for any collusion-related crime. Instead, they charged him for his conduct during their investigation. The simple fact is that if the Special Counsel had not been pursuing an absolutely baseless investigation, Mr. Stone would not be facing time in prison. In addition to charging Mr. Stone with alleged crimes arising solely from their own improper investigation, the Mueller prosecutors also took pains to make a public and shameful spectacle of his arrest. Mr. Stone is a 67-year-old man, with numerous medical conditions, who had never been convicted of another crime. But rather than allow him to surrender himself, they used dozens of FBI agents with automatic weapons and tactical equipment, armored vehicles, and an amphibious unit to execute a pre-dawn raid of his home, where he was with his wife of many years. Notably, CNN cameras were present to broadcast these events live to the world, even though they swore they were not notified—it was just a coincidence that they were there together with the FBI early in the morning. Not only was Mr. Stone charged by overzealous prosecutors pursing a case that never should have existed, and arrested in an operation that never should have been approved, but there were also serious questions about the jury in the case. The forewoman of his jury, for example, concealed the fact that she is a member of the so-called liberal "resistance" to the Trump Presidency. In now-deleted tweets, this activist-juror vividly and openly attacked President Trump and his supporters. Mr. Stone would be put at serious medical risk in prison. He has appealed his conviction and is seeking a new trial. He maintains his innocence and has stated that he expects to be fully exonerated by the justice system. Mr. Roger Stone is now a free man! --CNBC's Brian Schwartz contributed to this report. Search continues for missing 'Glee' actress in Lake Piru using sonar scanning systems - KEYT Posted: 10 Jul 2020 06:48 PM PDT VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - The Ventura County Sheriff's Office provided an update on the search for missing actress Naya Rivera at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. During the update, Ventura County Sheriff's Captain Eric Buschow explained that deputies, with assistance from LA County and Tulare County Sheriff's Offices, are continuing to search for Rivera in Lake Piru. The search is being primarily focused on the north and east sides of the lake due to the location her boat was found and the direction of the wind. Because of rough conditions, Capt. Buschow said visibility in the lake is around one to two feet, making it difficult for divers to locate objects in the deep water. At this time, sonar scanning systems are being utlitized by search teams. These devices are towed behind boats and scan the bottom of the lake for any objects that might look like a body. When an object is detected, deputies deploy a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to get a close up look of the object. Capt. Buschow said an ROV has been deployed a couple of times since Friday morning, however, Rivera's body still has not been located. Rivera was reported missing on Wednesday after her rental boat was found floating on Lake Piru with only her four-year-old son sleeping inside. Her son told investigators he and his mother had gone swimming, but she never returned to the boat. A search quickly ensued, however, Rivera was not found along the shoreline or surface of the lake. Amazon.com bans, then un-bans TikTok app from employee mobile devices - Reuters Posted: 10 Jul 2020 06:44 PM PDT (Reuters) - In the span of a few hours on Friday, Amazon.com Inc banned and then unbanned the TikTok video sharing app from employee mobile devices, calling the move a mistake. FILE PHOTO: A TikTok logo is displayed on a smartphone in this illustration taken January 6, 2020. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration The news generated widespread attention for the Chinese-owned social media platform coming the same week U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States is "certainly looking at" banning TikTok, suggesting it shared information with the Chinese government. It was not immediately clear what led to the initial ban by Amazon. One person familiar with the matter said senior Amazon executives were unaware of the request to delete TikTok from employee devices. The ban was reversed after TikTok and Amazon representatives discussed the matter, according to an email sent to TikTok employees. Earlier this week, Wells Fargo sent a note to employees who had installed TikTok on company-owned mobile devices telling them to remove the app immediately. "Due to concerns about TikTok's privacy and security controls and practices, and because corporate-owned devices should be used for company business only, we have directed those employees to remove the app from their devices," Wells Fargo said in a statement. "We have not been contacted by Wells Fargo, but as with any organization that has concerns, we are open to engaging with them constructively and letting them know about the actions we have taken to protect data security for our users," a TikTok spokesman told Reuters in a statement. The attention underscores the hotseat that TikTok's owner, China-based ByteDance, has found itself in over recent days. The Chinese ownership of TikTok, among the fastest growing digital platforms ever, has come under heavy scrutiny on issues including their handling of user data. India banned TikTok and other Chinese apps in June. The company has said user data is stored in the United States with a backup copy in Singapore. One person familiar with the matter said TikTok's user data is primarily stored in the Google Cloud in its Virginia-based data center. TikTok declined to comment. Google could not immediately be reached for comment. That did not stop Pompeo from floating a possible ban of TikTok in the United States. Asked if Americans should download it, he told Fox News: "Only if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party." On Friday, the Republican National Committee asked its members via email not to download TikTok. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Friday also reiterated its guidance from December to stop downloading the app. A person familiar with the matter said the DNC has been advising campaign staff for months not to use TikTok on their personal devices and to use a separate phone and account if they use the platform for campaign work because of the amount of data it tracks. A spokesman for the DNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Two Republican senators in March introduced a bill aimed at banning federal employees from using TikTok on government-issued phones, citing national security concerns around the collection and sharing of data on U.S. users with China's government. Last year the United States Navy banned TikTok from government-issued mobile devices, saying the app represented a "cybersecurity threat." Last November, the U.S. government launched a national security review of TikTok owner Beijing ByteDance Technology Co's $1 billion acquisition of U.S. social media app Musical.ly, Reuters first reported last year. SECURITY CONCERNSTo address concerns over its Chinese ownership, ByteDance has taken steps to shift its center of power away from China, Reuters previously reported. It is also looking to make changes to TikTok's corporate structure for the same reasons, a company spokesperson said this week. But concerns persist. Last month, when Apple released to developers a test version of its iOS operating system with new privacy features, developers showed images of TikTok's app triggering notifications that it was copying data from users' clipboards, where data is temporarily stored while copying and pasting from one app to another. TikTok said the notifications were caused by an anti-spam feature but that it would end the practice. Apple has not restricted TikTok use by employees, one of them said. Some U.S. semiconductor companies have been reluctant to consider a ban on TikTok because ByteDance is a customer, according to people familiar with the matter. Some firms providing security services to big companies have added TikTok to their lists of banned apps on managed devices.
